AFCON Finals: Karl Toko Ekambi scored a brace as Cameroon reach the semi-finals. Toko Ekambi headed his country ahead in the 50th minute, glancing in from Collins Fai’s right-wing cross. Karl Toko Ekambi scored two second-half goals as hosts Cameroon beat The Gambia to move into the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.

It became 2-0 seven minutes later with Toko Ekambi finishing at the back post following Martin Hongla’s low delivery. Cameroon will play either Egypt or Morocco in the semi-final on Thursday, with the final next Sunday.

The Gambia were competing in the tournament for the first time and beat Mauritania and Tunisia in the group phase to reach the knockout stages, before eliminating Guinea in the last 16. But, in front of a passionate home crowd at Japoma Stadium in Douala, The Gambia were outclassed and could have fallen behind in the first half.

Fai fired into the side-netting from 30 yards before Vincent Aboubakar – the tournament’s leading goalscorer with six – glanced a header just wide, and was then denied from another close-range header as goalkeeper Baboucarr Gaye produced an excellent save.

However, The Gambia’s resistance was broken early in the second half as Toko Ekambi rose above defender James Gomez to head five-time Afcon winners Cameroon into the lead with his fourth goal of the tournament.  His fifth came shortly afterward when he got on the end of Hongla’s inviting cross.

The other semi-final will see the winners of Saturday‘s second match, Burkina Faso v Tunisia, play either Senegal or Equatorial Guinea – with that quarter-final tie live on BBC Two from 18:45 GMT on Sunday. Both semi-finals and the final will also be live on the BBC.

Cameroon were playing for the first time since eight supporters, including an eight-year-old boy, lost their lives in a crush outside Olembe stadium in Yaounde on Monday before the last-16 win over Comoros.

Former Gweru mayor Josiah Makombe, who was recalled by the Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC, has angered residents after he refused to hand over to the council a Toyota Prado that belongs to the local authority.

Makombe reportedly condemned the “extravagant acquisition” when the car was delivered but he is now clinging to the same vehicle. Acting town clerk Vakai Douglas Chikwekwe confirmed to The NewsHawks that Makombe was yet to surrender the Toyota Prado to the council.

Meanwhile, Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association director Cornelia Selipiwe condemned Makombe for his “selfishness” as he is refusing to return the vehicle at a time when the local authority is struggling to provide services to ratepayers. Said Selipiwe:

This is a clear testimony, a clear indication that when these councillors are elected into office they are not elected to serve people but their own egos, to fatten their own pockets.

I don’t see why council property is taken by someone for personal use. It’s all hogwash and nonsensical and it shows that as a city we are not going anywhere. Why take the Prado that was moreover initially bought for the town clerk? This goes to show the level of selfishness of these people.

It’s really dangerous for the city and we will never progress as long as we have such deployees who are bent on milking our local authority. How does one want to get terminal benefits when they are fired?

Selipiwe urged Makombe to do the “honourable thing” and surrender the vehicle to the council. Gweru City Council is struggling to pay its $257 million debt to the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA).

On Tuesday, ZESA disconnected electricity at the city’s water treatment plants at two of its main water sources White Waters and Gwenhoro dams. Power was only restored on Friday following the intervention of Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Larry Mavima.

Binga journalist threatened for exposing Chinese firm. Mujopeni Mudimba a Binga-based journalist, Mujopeni Mudimba, has allegedly been receiving death threats from unknown people after he wrote a story about the displacement of villagers by a Chinese miner in the district.

The journalist works for the recently licensed local community radio station, Twasumbuka Community Radio. According to the station manager, Bbaido Ndhlovu, Mudimba was threatened by an unknown person, who called him twice using a private number.

The unknown caller reportedly warned Mudimba that he would rot in jail and also “die for nothing” if he continues writing stories relating to the evictions. The Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa Zimbabwe) on Tuesday condemned the harassment of the journalist. It said:

Misa Zimbabwe strongly condemns any forms of media violations including threats and harassment of journalists. Journalists should be allowed to exercise their constitutional right to media freedom without fear

Through its watchdog role, the media is allowed to voice and disseminate information on the concerns of communities in which they operate.

Misa Zimbabwe, therefore, urges any persons aggrieved with a story published by any media institution or media practitioner, to approach the Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe or the Zimbabwe Media Commission for adjudication and redress.

Drama as contraceptive pills exposes teacher’s affair with form 2 student. Phineas Chimhowa (43), a teacher at Chingono Primary School, would tiptoe into the minor’s room in the dead of the night while her grandmother would be sleeping in the next room.

A Rusape teacher was recently arrested and appeared in court facing charges of sleeping with a minor after bedding an underage school pupil on several occasions. Chimhowa, who was represented by Walter Mangwende of Chigadza and Associates, was not asked to plead when he appeared before Rusape magistrate, Annie Ndiraya. He was granted $15 000 bail.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)’s Innocent Mwoyowaonda told the court that the accused gave the Form Two girl contraceptive pills and abused her on several occasions. He said:

Chimhowa is the complainant’s former Grade Seven teacher. On a date unknown to the prosecutor, but during the month of January 2021, Chimhowa introduced online lessons to school children and the complainant started using her grandmother’s cellphone for those lessons.

In April 2021, Chimhowa started proposing love to the complainant through WhatsApp and the juvenile accepted the proposal in May 2021. In August 2021, Chimhowa sent a message via WhatsApp indicating that he wanted to see the complainant at their homestead.

The complainant agreed and told Chimhowa that she was leaving the dining room unlocked so that he could enter and proceed straight to her room. The two were intimate on several occasions. Chimhowa allegedly brought the minor some contraceptives pills and instructed her to take a single tablet each day to prevent pregnancy.

On 12 December Chimhowa allegedly took the juvenile to his house at the school and slept with her again. The matter came to light in January this year when the girl’s aunt found some contraceptive pills in her bedroom.

She quizzed the minor over the issue and she revealed what had been happening between her and the teacher. A police report was made, leading to Chimhowa’s arrest.

Fresh headache for Nelson Chamisa over new party name. An opposition political party calling itself the Citizens Convergence for Change (CCC) has written a letter to Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) chief elections officer Utoile Silaigwana in protest over the registration of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) led by Nelson Chamisa by the electoral body.

In the letter, CCC secretary-general Farai Zhou claimed the Nelson Chamisa-led political outfit not only usurped its abbreviation but also its colour (yellow) as well.

Zhou advised ZEC to liaise with CCC and agree on a different abbreviation for them to use, failure of which will result in litigation against both the electoral body and the newly-formed CCC. Part of the letter by Zhou to ZEC read:

Citizens Convergence for Change (CCC)

We refer to the above and write further to your Press Statement, a copy of which is attached. We note that there is a new political party that you have referred to as “Citizens Coalition for Change” and, in your Press Statement, you have given them the abbreviation “CCC”.

While we are still consulting our lawyers regarding the question of whether “Citizens Coalition for Change is too close to our name to cause confusion to the reasonable voter, it is beyond question that there cannot be, and you cannot accept a new political party that uses the abbreviation “CCC”.

That abbreviation, as noted to you as far back as 8 September 2021 belongs to our political party, and it is wrong for the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to consider that it can easily parcel off to another entity.

Particularly when that entity clearly seeks to benefit from our name and colours: ours as you are aware being BLUE and YELLOW. The time for suing ZEC will come, when you start fiddling with things to deny voters their choice, please do not invite us to start suing you now.

Kindly liaise with this political party and agree to a different abbreviation for them to use, which is not ours. Absent confirmation that you will heed this warning, our lawyers will in fact file papers suing both ZEC and this usurper and ask for costs on the punitive scale.

Chamisa and his allies recently abandoned the MDC Alliance name and branded the party to Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) after the MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora claimed the MDC acronym and all its derivatives.

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates star Jabu Mahlangu has reportedly been charged with negligent and reckless driving and fleeing the scene of an accident. According to TimesLive, a case docket has been registered with the Benoni SA Police Service following the soccer star’s accident.

Mahlangu was involved in a car collision a few days ago. His BMW4 series reportedly collided with a Toyota Hiace Quantum that was filled with passengers.

Reports have revealed that two passengers were seriously injured and 11 had minor injuries. Mahlangu’s lawyers told City Press that the former soccer star was admitted together with the other passengers who were rushed to the hospital after the accident, “We have not seen him yet. The only thing we got from his brother was the confirmation that there was an accident in the early hours of the morning.

“It looks like there was more than one vehicle involved. They suspect that the occupants of the other vehicle might be injured too. Jabu is in the same hospital [with some of them],”
However, the EMPD spokesperson Lt-Col Kelebogile Thepa told TimesLive that when the EMPD and emergency services personnel arrived at the scene Mahlangu was not there.

Shock as Marange polygamist milks wives. A Johane Marange Apostolic Church polygamist shocked the Mutare Magistrates Court recently when he disclosed that he divorced one of his wives for refusing to provide for him financially.

Fungai Marange (36) of Marange was dragged before Mutare magistrate, Xavier Chipato, by his estranged wife Molline Mufudza who was applying for $15 000 maintenance for the upkeep of her four children who are all below the age of five.

Marange accused Mufudza of applying for maintenance as a way of fixing him after he sent her packing when the couple appeared in court last week on Thursday. He told the court that according to his religious doctrine, his three wives must support him and their eight children as he is the head of the family. Said Marange:

All my three wives know that it is their duty to take care of the family. They do gardening together and we sell the vegetables and fresh maize to take care of the family. Mufudza is stubborn. She knows that I am uneducated and therefore cannot be employed anywhere, but she insists that I should take care of her.

She became wayward when she realised that I could not secure a job. She started putting on short dresses like the one she is wearing today. It is totally unacceptable in our church. She even stopped attending church services. Look at her, she does not even have a headscarf on her head.

Marange said the $15 000 that Mufudza was asking for was too much, and offered to pay US$15 every month for the four children’s upkeep. Mufudza told the court that Marange is a builder, but he denied the claim, saying he was his late brother’s assistant.

Chipato ordered Marange to pay US$15 monthly maintenance for his four minor children.

Azam TV to compete with DStv as it offers 100 channels for US$5. The Tanzanian company launched its services in Zimbabwe on Friday night at an event that was graced by Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa.

For just US$5 per month, Zimbabweans can now watch 100 different channels on satellite television following the launch of a pay television company, Azam TV. Azam TV chief financial officer, Kedarnathrao Bedare, said packages on offer included sports, movies, cartoons, documentaries, news, drama and series, among others.

Housemaid str!pped n@ked by angry employer. Daniel and Briana Mutoronga denied the charges when they appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Nomasiko Ndlovu last week. A Bulawayo couple has appeared before a magistrate facing charges of stripping and assaulting their maid for demanding her full wages.

Allegations are that on 2 January this year, at around 8 am, a dispute arose between Soneni Sibanda and her employer after she was given US$30 instead of the agreed US$80. An argument ensued between the two parties and the couple subsequently ordered Sibanda to leave their home and she refused, demanding her money.

The couple then allegedly tore the complainant’s clothes and threw them out of the house. Sibanda allegedly tried fighting back but was overpowered by the two who dragged her off their yard n@ked.

She called her husband in Gwabalanda who rushed to the scene. The matter was then reported to the police leading to the Mutorongas’ arrest. Owen Mugari prosecuted.

Temba Mliswa and estranged girlfriend given ultimatum. Mliswa and Mugwira have been in and out of court over the upkeep of their two minor children. Norton MP, Temba Mliswa (Independent) and his former girlfriend, Cynthia Mugwira, a Harare-based lawyer, have been given a one-week ultimatum to end their dispute pertaining to the upkeep of their minor children.

In 2016, the court ordered Mliswa to pay $8 000 as maintenance for the two children but the two are in disagreement on the choice of school for the kids. Mliswa has opted for a government school while Mugwira prefers a private school.

The two were back in court on Thursday where they appear before Justices Emilia Muchawa and Neville Wamambo. The judges ruled: We are giving both parties up to February 4th to find each other and file their consent in the form of a draft order.

Failure to do this, the court will be left to reserve its judgment. We also urge parties to put their petty differences aside and consider the needs of the minor children first.

Mliswa recently at StarFM, told a local station that he has 19 children and is providing for the upkeep of three children even though paternity tests proved that the three are not his biological children.

Controversial prophets are at each other’s throats again. This time, Prophet Mboro Motsoeneng is set to sue Prophet Shepherd Bushiri for defamation.

According to a statement shared by TV and radio personality Kuli Roberts, Mboro will be taking legal action against Bushiri after the Malawian prophet allegedly posted on his social media that Mboro was accused of s.e.xual misconduct. However, according to the statement, this was a reporting error from eNCA that was later rectified.

The news channel was covering the story of Apostle BB Dingiso, who was arrested for several charges including s.e.xual misconduct and murders. eNCA had a headline error that read “Mboro accused of sexual misconduct instead of “Dingiso accused of sexual misconduct,” the statement explains.

During this time, the couple had full support from the members of their church. The church’s spokesperson Terrence Baloyi said to the SABC, “The intention is clearly not to seek justice. The intention is clearly not to make sure that justice prevails at the end of the day. We can assure you the prophet and prophetess are innocent creatures of God; whatever they are charged with are charges that are baseless and cannot stand any test of any court proceedings. I can assure you, we feel this is nothing but a personal vendetta.

A few days after the Pretoria Central Magistrate’s Court granted them bail, Bushiri released a statement revealing that they have fled to their home country Malawi temporarily because of safety and security concerns.
“There have been clear and evident attempts to have myself, my wife, and my family killed and despite our several attempts to report to authorities, there has never been State protection. Buhera school adds beekeeping to its new curriculum. At least seven other schools in Buhera District have followed Muzokomba High School’s footsteps and ventured into apiculture. A secondary school in Buhera District, Manicaland Province, Muzokomba High School, has embarked on a beekeeping project as part of its new curriculum.

The school beekeeping club chairperson, Jephter Mudongo told The Manica Post that the bee-keeping project is part of the new curriculum which emphasises doing more practical work under the life skills module. Said Mudongo:

In a bid to embrace the life skills enhancing curriculum, the school has embarked on a beekeeping project as a core practical activity. The project seeks to empower pupils by encouraging them to individually own beehives.

As a result, we have established at the school an apiary, where beehives are kept, and in the long run, we anticipate that every child will own a beehive. The proceeds from this project will be channelled towards subsiding school fees for the pupils.

We have received training from Apimondia on how to make state-of-the-art beehives as well as how to harvest quality organic honey. Our beehives cost US$20 when being sold to the local community and other schools around.

Muzokomba High School is now affiliated with the continental beekeeping body, the Apimondia, which is the umbrella body of the International Federation of Beekeepers Associations.

Apimondia’s main objective is to facilitate the exchange of information and discussions where beekeepers, scientists, honey traders, agents for development, technicians and legislators meet to listen, discuss and learn from each other.

Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has been accused of domestic violence by his girlfriend Harriet Robson. The series of disturbing images clearly indicate a physical attack. She later posts an audio clip in which Greenwood was being abusive and threatening her.

The news has shocked United fans waking up this morning, as they fear what’s in store for the 20-year-old. Greenwood has been touted as one of the most promising talents coming from United’s academy, with a bright future in front of him.

With United refusing to invest in another young striker, many believed that the 20-year-old would eventually lead the line for United. If there is any truth to the story, it is shocking and disgraceful behaviour that the club surely cannot and will not tolerate. Outrage over court lenient ruling on Chinese child marriage case. Chief Neuso, born Titos Mudzimiri, last Sunday fined the Chinese national only identified as Yan, four beasts, three sheep and US$1 000. Girl rights defenders are not happy with a fine imposed by a traditional court on a Chinese expatriate who impregnated and married a 15-year-old Sanyati girl.

Yan is employed as an engineer at Rongxin/Mambo Mine, about 75km from Kadoma in Mashonaland West Province. The parents of the girl were also fined for “selling off” their daughter on 26 November 2021.

Africa Union Goodwill ambassador on ending child marriages, Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, called for zero tolerance on child marriages. She also urged the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to expedite investigations into the case. Karen Mukwasi, the director of Pada Platform said the girl was too young to consent to marriage.

Shamwari Ye Mwanasikana advocacy officer Rudo Mangwanyata said those involved in child marriages should be punished severely. She said:

Forced marriages are a menace to society and the lives of girls. Forced Marriages must end now. The Marriage Bill must be passed into law as a matter of urgency.

We need tougher sentences to be imposed on perpetrators. Our courts must set precedence when sentencing those found guilty of these crimes against girls.

Having offenders going unpunished defeats our efforts in ending violence against women and girls by 2030. Acting Prosecutor General Justin Uladi on Friday told The Standard that investigations into the child marriage case are yet to be completed. He said:

I can confirm that there are two dockets that have reached our office in Kadoma. One of them involves the Chinese national suspected of having married a minor and the other one is of the parents who married off the minor. These have been returned to the police for further investigation but l can’t comment further.
