ZANU PF rejects Energy Mutodi’s appeal

ZANU PF rejects Energy Mutodi’s appeal. Former Deputy Information Minister, Mutodi’s appeal was dismissed on the grounds that he still sits on the Mashonaland East PCC. Mutodi is the MP for Goromonzi West in Mash East.

Energy Mutodi’s appeal to remain in the ZANU PF Masvingo Province Coordinating Committee (PCC) in line with the December 2021 provincial elections results has been rejected. The appeal was dismissed during a PCC meeting in Masvingo on Sunday.

In dismissing the appeal, Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology principal, Munyaradzi Machacha said: Your appeal cannot be accepted because by virtue of being a Goromonzi West legislator you automatically sit in the Mash East PCC.

So until you renounce your position in Mash East; the party constitution does not allow you to sit in two PCCs. At the moment your case does not hold water and is automatically dismissed on that technicality.

Mutodi is reportedly planning to move from Mash East to Masvingo his home area where he is eyeing Bikita South constituency.

Mutodi got 583 votes during the December elections beating the incumbent Bikita South legislator, Josiah Sithole, by almost 200 votes. The new ZANU PF provincial chairperson for Masvingo Province is Rabison Mavhenyengwa.

President Macron refused Russian COVID-19 Test during trip to Moscow over DNA theft fears

President Macron refused Russian COVID-19 Test during trip to Moscow over DNA theft fears. French President Emmanuel Macron refused a request by the Russian Government that he take a Russian COVID-19 test when he arrived to see President Vladimir Putin this week, resulting in the two leaders having a socially-distanced meeting.

The Russian and French leaders held lengthy talks on the Ukraine crisis in Moscow.

Reuters reported two sources who have knowledge of the French president’s health protocol as saying that the Macron team refused the Russian COVID-19 test to prevent Russia from getting hold of Macron’s DNA.

Putin and Macron were photographed at opposite ends of a table so long raising speculation that Putin might be using it to send a message.

Macron was reportedly given a choice: either accept a PCR test done by the Russian authorities and be allowed to get close to Putin or refuse and have to abide by more stringent social distancing. Said a Reuters source:

We knew very well that meant no handshake and that long table. But we could not accept that they get their hands on the president’s DNA.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Macron had declined the test and said Russia had no problem with this.

He added that Macron’s refusal to be tested for COVID-19 by Russian doctors meant that a 6-metre distance from Putin was required in order to protect the Kremlin leader’s health.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev

Meanwhile, on Thursday, three days after Macron and Putin had their socially-distanced meeting, the Russian leader received Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The two leaders shook hands, and sat close to each other, divided only by a small coffee table.

Man assaults wife over pregnancy test kit

Man assaults wife over pregnancy test kit. A Beitbridge businessman, Jonathan Madhuku appeared before Magistrate Vavariro Gabi for assaulting his wife Vivian Rwasunda.

Madhuku (29), was arrested for assaulting his wife after he found a pregnancy test kit on their matrimonial bed.

He was sentenced to 20 months in jail, but he will serve an effective 16 months after the magistrate suspended four months of the sentence if he doesn’t commit a similar offence within the next five years.

Madhuku has since engaged the services of Patrick Tererai of Tereral Legal Practice to appeal against the sentence.

The State represented by Tawanda Chigavazira said on 5 November at around 9:35 pm, the complainant had a misunderstanding with the accused over the issue of marrying a second wife.

The State further alleged that Madhuku got angry and assaulted his wife with open hands on the face and she sustained injuries.

Rwasunda was reportedly severely injured and left with shaking teeth and eating disorders. In his defence, Madhuku told the court that he reacted the way he did because he was provoked by his wife.

He said when he asked about the test kit, Rwasunda responded by saying he was “lucky” that he did not find a used condom in the home. Said Madhuku:

I found a pregnancy test kit on the bed and when I tried to ask my wife, she warned me not to be shocked as I can even find a used condom in the room.

Police reportedly blocked from exhuming Anna Machaya’s remains

Police reportedly blocked from exhuming Anna Machaya’s remains. Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers were barred from accessing the shrine at Mafararikwa village. Police officers were on Thursday reportedly blocked from exhuming the body of child bride Anna Machaya, who died whilst giving birth at a Johanne Marange Apostolic sect shrine in Marange in July last year.

Anna, who was 14, was illegally buried at the shrine in an apparent bid to conceal her death as the “marriage” and nature of her death had legal consequences for those involved. The police officers were armed with an exhumation order to recover Anna’s remains as part of their investigations into her death.

Her husband, Hatirarami Momberume alias Evans Michael Momberume, who is in his late twenties, has been charged with her murder.

When contacted for a comment by ZimLive, ZRP national spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said he was out of office and did not have details of the incident. But an unnamed police officer told the publication:

The church’s leader Noah Taguta sent his devotees to tell the officers that they should bring authorisation from the president [Emmerson Mnangagwa].

He did not recognise the exhumation order signed by the district administrator. He runs the shrine as if it’s an embassy, he’s the law. Taguta, who styles himself as a “high priest” of his church, receives senior government officials at his shrine from time to time.

Even President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been a visitor to the shrine and Taguta has spoken publicly of his support for the ZANU PF party.

Anna died on 16 July last year from excessive bleeding, hours after she gave birth at the shrine near Mutare. Congregants buried her at the shrine without a burial order.

In January this year, Anna’s parents Edmore Machaya, 45, and his wife Shy Mabika, 36, were jailed for nine months each after being convicted on charges of defeating or obstructing the course of justice.

They were charged after they lied to police investigators that Anna’s name was Memory Machaya, to conceal the fact that she was a minor.

They also claimed that Anna was born on 2 January 1999, which would have made her 22 when she died. Police however established that the deceased teenager’s name was Anna Machaya, and she was born on 5 July 2006.

That was after the police obtained a copy of the dead girl’s birth certificate from Wanganui High School where she was a student before she got married to Momberume.

Anna had been forced to drop out of school whilst doing Form 2 after falling pregnant and her parents married her off to Momberume.

Prophet T Freddy found not guilty

Prophet T Freddy found not guilty. The founder and leader of Goodness and Mercy Ministries, Tapiwa Freddy, has been acquitted of r@pe and physical abuse charges he was facing.

Freddy, a self-proclaimed prophet, was declared NOT guilty by Harare Regional Magistrate Gloria Takundwa.

In her ruling, Takundwa said the State failed to prove its case against Freddy after there were several inconsistencies in the testimony of the complainant. Takundwa said the complainant departed from her material evidence which she gave to the police in her recorded statement.

The magistrate added that the complainant changed her story when giving evidence in court, while her aunt denied having been told of the second alleged r@pe.

Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com in a subsequent interview, Freddy’s lawyer, Jivas Mudimu, said that the whole case was flawed from the beginning. He said: It was clear that there was no rape. It was clear from the word go that Freddy never r@ped the complainant and never physically abused her.

It was blackmailing and we are happy today that fair enough justice prevailed. Freddy had been facing charges of r@ping and physically abusing a 33-year radio presenter who is physically challenged.

Bunny Chow recipe

A flavorful African curry that is served in a hollowed-out loaf of bread. Perfect for dipping!

Ingredients

2 lbs beef roast, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 tsp olive oil
1 onion, diced
2 garlic cloves, 1 tsp dry, ground, minced
½ inch fresh ginger, peeled and minced or (1/8 tsp dry, ground ginger)
2 bay leaves
2 green cardamom pods, split
2 small whole cloves or 1/8 tsp ground cloves
1 cinnamon stick
2 tomatoes, diced (roughly 2 c)
1 Tb curry powder
1 ½ tsp chilli powder
1 ½ tsp garam masala
1 tsp ground coriander seeds
½ tsp cumin
½ tsp turmeric
4 medium Russet potatoes, peeled and diced
½ c water
1 Tbsp white wine vinegar
½ tsp salt
2 loaves white bread, un-sliced

Instructions

1. Heat a large sauté pan with high sides or a Dutch oven over high heat. Add the beef chunks a few at a time, as to not over-crowd the pan. Sear the beef cubes on all sides and remove them from the pan. Set aside.

2. Reduce the heat to medium and add the oil. Once the oil is hot, add the onions and sauté until golden, 5-7 min.

3. Add the garlic, ginger, bay, cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon stick. Sauté until the mixture is fragrant, 1-2 min.

4. Add the diced tomatoes along with the curry powder, chilli powder, garam masala, coriander, cumin, and turmeric. Cook for 4-5 min, until the tomatoes start to break down.

5. Add the seared meat and diced potatoes to the pan along with ½ c of water. Bring the mixture to a simmer.

6. Cover and simmer over low heat for 30-40 min, until potatoes are cooked and the meat is tender. Check the curry occasionally during cooking and add a little water if it seems to be getting too dry.

7. Towards the end of cooking time, mix in the vinegar and salt.

Assembling the Bunny

* While the curry is cooking, slice the loaves of bread in half and hollow each half out, creating two cube-shaped bowls out of each loaf. (Be careful to leave enough bread around the edges to keep the structure of the ‘bowl’.)
* To serve, spoon the curry into each half loaf bowl.
* Serve the bunny with extra bread, if desired, and a side salad.

Exchange rate might hit 1 000 by December

Exchange rate might hit 1 000 by December. Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) vice president and former Finance Minister Tendai Biti, says Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor John Mangudya’s monetary policies are inadequate to control inflation.

Speaking in an interview at New Zim TV’s premier weekly show, “The Agenda”, Biti predicted that the high rate of inflation will drive the exchange rate to a high of US$1: ZW$1 000 by December this year. Biti said:

My suspicion is that the exchange rate will by August stand at US$1 to ZW$400, which is a lot of depreciation.

Very soon the parallel rate will be at US$1 to ZW$500 but they are afraid of that especially in a year before elections, so what they are doing is squeezing the tap for the RTGS dollar by withdrawal limits and closely monitoring corporates’ current accounts to ensure there are no movements to fuel Fourth Street (illegal exchange rate market).

To be very crude by end of the year we will be very close to US$1 to ZW$1000, it is back to 2008.

Biti accused Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube of burying his head in the sand by insisting that the economy was on a recovery path. He said:

The elephant in the living room is the dual economy that Zimbabwe has, Mthuli is pretending to administer a certain economy, prescribe solutions to a certain economy but the rest of us are in another reality, his is a reality distorted field, a false field.

There is a US dollar economy where most of us live, where shops will not accept anything other than the US dollar, where school fees are paid in US dollars, where fuel is paid for in US dollars, where rentals are in US dollars, where houses are sold in USD and that is the bulk of the economy.

Mangudya and Ncube are in this artificial world of this Zimbabwe dollar economy so when he pronounces the monetary policy he is pronouncing it for this small non-existent economy that is controlled by cartels.

Those who are saying inflation has gone down need to be asked the economy they are measuring, will they be measuring the cash US dollar economy or the artificial, false non-existent Zim dollar economy.

It is a cantankerous economy, someone once called it a casino economy but there are rules in a casino…this is a sewer, in a sewer you cannot measure the extent of the stench, you cannot measure the extent of the flow.

It is a dog’s breakfast but one which many dogs will not touch by a long mile.

ZANU PF Officials reportedly fearful of a Bhora Musango scenario

ZANU PF Officials reportedly fearful of a Bhora Musango scenario. The internal elections exposed deep-rooted factionalism in the province amid growing concerns the G40 faction might be taking control of the ruling party’s provincial structures.

ZANU PF officials in Bulawayo Province have expressed worry over the party’s failure to properly conduct the recent primary elections to select candidates for the March 26 by-elections.

ZANU PF insiders who spoke to The Zimbabwe Independent fear that the national leadership’s failure to address complaints raised soon after the primary elections might trigger a “bhora musango” scenario.

Bhora Musango was a clandestine campaign by some ZANU PF leaders in the run-up to the 2008 harmonised elections against voting for the party’s presidential candidate leader Robert Mugabe while voting for the party’s parliamentary and local council candidates. Said an unnamed official:

The primary elections were rigged and this will work against the President. For some wards, ballots were mixed so that people could not see their candidates. Ballots never balanced with figures of up to 100 in some instances. That means people were smuggled even when they were not on the voting list.

Vote-buying was allowed with no questions asked. Complaints on the irregularities were not entertained while the provincial chair acknowledged there was something wrong with primaries. The chairman must know that he is chairing a pure 70% G40 executive.

ZANU PF Bulawayo chairperson Jabulani Sibanda, who landed the post in December after years in the political wilderness, dismissed reports of factionalism and claims that complaints were swept under the carpet. He said:

That is nonsense, there is no factionalism here. I am aware of what you are asking. All the complaints brought to the office were forwarded to Harare and that is where you can get your answers from. I don’t have answers to your questions.

However, the ZANU PF insider claimed Sibanda Sibanda was bypassed when candidates’ curriculum vitae were sent to the party’s head office. He said:

Sibanda is now just a shadow of his former self. It is known from way back that Sibanda and Mnangagwa are close, even during the late former president Robert Mugabe’s tenure.

We expected a change from him but many people are disappointed. Hopefully, he will find a solution; on the issue of candidates, he was left out only to know when curriculum vitae had reached Harare. They bypassed him.

Reports suggest that ZANU PF members within provincial structures are divided between those allegedly backing Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga and others belonging to a group aligned to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Suspended teachers take govt to court

Suspended teachers take govt to court. Obert Masaraure argued that Ndlovu had no authority to suspend striking teachers as that was the mandate of the Public Service Commission (PSC).

Masaraure, the president of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), on Friday, filed an urgent chamber application at the High Court, challenging the suspension of striking teachers by Primary and Secondary Education Minister Evelyn Ndlovu. He said:

There is no provision giving the respondent such powers as she purports to exercise or suspend all officials within its ministry unilaterally. The provision is clear as to what happens and who should give effect to a suspension notice.

For example, senior grade members, who are part of the applicant, are prejudiced in having to be suspended by an order of the minister when in fact; the law provides for them a different disciplinary authority.

The Press statement of the respondent is, therefore, manifestly illegal and ought to be set aside. Masaraure, through his lawyer from the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum, added:

Although section 65 of the regulations provide for a departure from the provisions above, it is only the commission that can so authorise such departure or undertake such departure and not the Respondent of her own volition.

Further, such departure is put to a test of whether or not it will result in a substantial miscarriage of justice for it to pass as a valid departure.

There is no doubt that there will be a serious miscarriage of justice when tens of thousands of teachers are suspended without following proper procedures with just one blanketed notice on such a wide scale.

Late on Thursday, Ndlovu said striking teachers have been suspended due to their refusal to resume work despite the government’s offer to give them a 20 per cent salary increase and other non-monetary benefits.

Tributes are still pouring for the passing of 49-year-old media personality and actress Nomakula “Kuli” Roberts who passed away on Wednesday 9 February at 22:00.

A friend of the lifestyle journalist has shared more details about the night of her death.

Kuli Roberts’ friend who prefers to stay anonymous says he was with her on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

“We were laughing about her wig and her going bald for a shoot she was doing. She was okay, she was not sick.”

The friend also told a local publication that she accompanied the lifestyle journalist to the CCMA for her case against her previous employer.

“At 9 am we were there together. She was fine, the outcome was positive.”

“She was happy about it. She was dancing at the opening of a show she was doing, and she just collapsed.”

“I am devastated and I don’t know what to say. The family spokesperson will handle everything and give details of what happened.”

Roberts was known for columns as a Lifestyle journalist in a local publication newspaper, Fair Lady, a local publication, and You Magazine where she was a fashion and beauty editor.

Another friend to Kuli Roberts added that she spoke to Roberts on Wednesday morning about a story she was working on.

They also attended a launch for Dr Paul Nassif’s products but Roberts was rushing to leave.

“I am in disbelief.”

Isidingo actress and Kuli Roberts’ sister – Hlubi Mboya confirmed her passing yesterday in a statement.

“It is with profound regret and sadness that we confirm the untimely passing of our dear daughter, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt Nomakula ‘Kuli’ Roberts (49).”

“She sadly passed away late last night (10th February) in Johannesburg.”

“Affectionately known and loved by her friends, family, and the South African entertainment industry at large, Kuli was an all-around media personality who was always the life of any gathering.”

“Her love for family, friends, work, and very importantly her community is well known.”

Roberts grew a thick skin over the years and was unbothered by social media trolls over her dramatic weight loss.

The late actress and TV presenter said she grew up being teased about her dark skin tone and explained that this was one of the reasons why she remained unconcerned by trolls in an interview with a local publication.

She also told the publication that the pandemic affected her appetite and mental state which contributed to her dramatic weight loss.

Pharmacies forced to shut down for selling expired drugs

Pharmacies forced to shut down for selling expired drugs. The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has shut down at least three pharmacies and revoked the licences of four managers for selling expired and unregistered medicines to patients.

MCAZ Acting Director-General Richard Rukwata said the cancellation of licences and closure of businesses will be in force until November this year.

Rukwata revealed that MCAZ recently adopted a new policy of naming and shaming those guilty of selling expired drugs. He said:

Licensees need to know that the game has changed. Contraventions to the statutes now carry significant reputational risk.

With the new policy of publishing offenders names, business leaders need to prioritise compliance for the good of their customers who are the citizens of this country.

The new policy is to publish these issues for the public good. Progressive regulatory processes require MCAZ to be transparent about regulatory decisions taken which result in the closure of businesses and cancellations of licenses.

The pharmacies and managers affected by the MCAZ clampdown are:

  • Skiborry Private Limited, which trades as Bright Pharmacy of Number 10 Highfield Road, Southerton was found guilty of purchasing medicines from unauthorised sources, selling unregistered and expired medicines. The cancellation order remains in force until November this year.
  • Edmore Jeje of Bright Pharmacy.
  • Mukoka & Chikuya Private Limited, which trades as Goodhope Pharmacy at Number 23 Jason Moyo was also shut for selling unregistered and expired medicines.
  • The licence holder for Goodhope Phamarcy Batsirayi Mukoka had his licence cancelled. The cancellation of the licences is valid until November this year.
  • Border Pharmacies Private Limited that trades as Border Pharmacy of Number 63 Living Waters, Beitbridge was shut down for selling unregistered and expired medicines.
  • Border Pharmacies’ two licence holders Costertain Delangton and Gamuchirayi Matandirotya had their practice licences cancelled until October this year.

Recalled MDC-A MP: Mwonzora offered me positions to betray Chamisa

Recalled MDC-A MP: Mwonzora offered me positions to betray Chamisa. Former Marondera Central legislator Caston Matewu (MDC Alliance) claims the MDC-T which is led by Douglas Mwonzora offered him various top posts in the party to persuade him to betray Nelson Chamisa.

Matewu said he realised that ZANU PF used MDC-T to recall him because, during Parliament sessions, he was exposing looting by cartels allegedly linked to the ruling party. He said:

I was offered many positions in the MDC-T, but I said no I will not betray my president, Nelson Chamisa.

The car was taken away from me. I lost all the Parliament benefits and salaries but at the end of the day it’s not about me but the people of Marondera who need representation.

You have got (Emmerson) Mnangagwa and Mwonzora in bed together, they are working hand in glove.

I believe when I was recalled I was not in the standing committee, and I was not a provincial chairperson, but I found myself being recalled from Parliament yet the main people they were recalling were actually standing committee members.

So, I wondered why I was recalled but then I found out it was a ZANU PF project, and they didn’t want me by all means necessary in parliament so that I don’t talk or expose all the shenanigans that were happening in Parliament.

Matewu was recalled from Parliament by MDC-T for allegedly promoting the interests of the Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance, now the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).

Long-distance bus operators clash

Long-distance bus operators clash. Dayise Express bus operators are accusing competitor Stallion Cruise of encroaching on their space and loading passengers at their scheduled time. Long-distance bus operators plying the Bulawayo to Victoria Falls route are fighting for loading space at illegal pick up points along First Avenue and Lobengula Street.

Speaking during an interview with CITE, Dayise Express General Manager, Nkosana Hlatshwayo said: We started plying this route last year. Before we ranked here, ZUPCO was running a slot around 10 am and we engaged them for space.

The permission was granted and we started loading passengers between 4 pm to 6 pm. Other buses that ranked here also agreed to that.

But now we are now facing serious challenges from Stallion Cruise yet it was only coming to offload passengers then maybe carry a few and continue on his journey.

… Stallion Cruise has taken up our route and we don’t understand why. We have a permit to ply the Bulawayo -Victoria falls route but Stallion doesn’t even have a permit for doing so.

Their permit runs from Harare to Victoria Falls, not Bulawayo to Victoria Falls but has been loading passengers every day.

Hlatshwayo said they were told that Stallion Cruise is owned by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s son and because of that, the company does not need to use permits. He said they tried to negotiate but their competitor was not forthcoming. Said Hlatshwayo:

With the way things are appearing and talk that is taking place, the end of the war will see blood spilt here on Bulawayo’s streets. We can’t be oppressed when we are supposed to be making a living.

Stallion loads three buses daily and zero for us yet we have workers and rent that has to be paid. Are we non-entities while Stallion owners are the only ones supposed to make money?

We must resolve this issue in a peaceful way, no one must be greedy. Meanwhile, General Manager of Stallion Cruise, Samson Mthombeni, told CITE that he had no knowledge there was a challenge at the rank. He added:

Since 2020 we have operated from that rank, working well with other buses such as Bravo, giving each other chances. We have never quarrelled.

There’s a time when we assigned our bus to some other route but we suddenly returned. But no one declared space for themselves.

What gives them the idea they own this spot. As far as we are concerned ZUPCO is a competitor and does not have authority to apportion to another competitor any space. ZUPCO is just a player in the industry.

Mthombeni admitted the rank was an illegal terminus therefore no one had ownership as the City of Bulawayo can wake up one day and order them to stop using the site. He said:

If anyone claims to own that spot, they must show documentation because what we are doing is wrong. It’s an illegal rank yet we have been loading. We should not hide that because authorities never gave us permission just that we want to maximise getting customers.

It is better we keep quiet because we are showing the authorities where we are hiding. Mthombeni also scoffed at allegations that Stallion Cruise was owned by President Mnangagwa’s son.

Report: Corruption entrenched at Registrar General’s offices

Report: Corruption entrenched at Registrar General’s offices. Corruption is reported to be rife at the Registrar General’s offices in Manicaland Province, with officials taking advantage of the shortage of consumables used to produce national identity cards, birth and death certificates to solicit bribes.

Investigations carried out by The Manica Post over the past fortnight at some registry offices in the province revealed that corrupt officials were working with security guards and their runners to solicit bribes from desperate people seeking the vital documents to facilitate quick service.

At Chipinge, Makoni and Mutare registry offices, people are reportedly being made to pay between US$5 and US$10 for the various services offered at the offices.

Those who pay the bribes to the runners are then led to the respective offices where they are promptly served, while those unwilling or unable to pay the bribes have to spend hours in queues.

At the Mutare office, unless one joins the queues in the wee hours of the morning, those who want to obtain national identity cards are booked into the system and given a date to return for the ID processing. However, those who could pay US$10 to the officials can still obtain her ID on the same day.

Manicaland Provincial Registrar, Joyce Munamati said people who are asked to pay bribes at the offices should approach her office provided that they have evidence to back their claims. She said:

The issue of shortages of consumables for IDs is a national issue, but we are doing everything possible to assist those who need them, especially those in areas where by-elections will be held. People should not rush to the media with unfounded allegations of corruption. There can be isolated cases, but you should not paint everyone with the same brush.

If they are not happy with the services of our district officers, they should know that there is a provincial officer who is always ready to assist them. Whenever people encounter any corrupt tendencies from our staff, they should approach my office with the necessary evidence and I will assist them.

We have noticed that some of the people who complain do not have all the documents required to get national IDs.

Mighty Warriors to play home AWCON qualifier in empty stadium

Mighty Warriors to play home AWCON qualifier in empty stadium. The match will be played at National Sports Stadium as it is the only stadium in the country provisionally certified by CAF in Zimbabwe to host international matches. Some national teams have been given permission by CAF to allow a limited number of fully vaccinated supporters during the senior men’s World Cup matches.

The Mighty Warriors will host Botswana in next week’s Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualifiers in an empty stadium after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) rejected Zimbabwe’s request to let in supporters.

However, the National Sports Stadium is yet to meet the continental body’s requirements, which include, among other things, having buckets seats and electronic access controls.

Zimbabwe hosts Botswana next Friday and then travel to Francistown for the reverse leg on 23 February. The winner of the two legs qualifies for the Africa Women Cup of Nations finals to be held in Morocco in July.

Mighty Warriors coach Sithetheliwe Sibanda lamented the inactivity of the local league due to COVID-19 which has negatively impacted the fitness of the squad. She said:

We should be ready even if we are not going to be 100 per cent fit. We should be ready for the match. The inactivity really is doing us no good. But if it’s the state of the affairs because of Covid-19 what can we do? This is what is there but we hope one day something will happen in women’s football.

If it’s not the league, at least we could even have some tournaments to keep the players active so that when they come to the national team they are in a better shape. The local league has been suspended since 2020 when COVID-19 was first detected in Zimbabwe.
