This as founder of the South African Literary Awards, Sindiswa Seakhoa, has died.

The death of the musician and praise poet was confirmed to Daily Sun by her friend Bishop Jessica Mbangeni, who was very distraught.

“It is true, she’s no more. I am very heartbroken. I can’t believe she left us this early because we still needed her. She was a pillar of strength to us, and supported us in the industry,” she said.

Jessica also took to Facebook to write a heartfelt message.

“We are leaving this world gracefully, but painfully leaving our loved ones. This morning, I cannot hide the pain I feel over the passing of my sister and mother. She gave praise poets a prime slot on her prestigious event, South African Literary Awards,” she wrote.

“Go well daughter of the soil. Owakho umzamo uwuzamile kwaye ugqatso ulufezile. Thokoza Gogo. Camagu mntanomhle. Good night Sindiswa. I will see you in the morning. Condolences to Morakabe Seakhoa. Speaking to Daily Sun, Morakabe said they were saddened by Sindiswa’s death and still coming to terms with it.

“My family and I are devastated. She was a leader and anchor, particularly to me as her husband. We are going to miss her deeply,” he said.

He added that details of the funeral and memorial service would be communicated in due course.

Update: RBZ reserve money as of the week ending 4 February 2022. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has issued an update on Reserve money noting that it declined during the week ending 4 February 2022 compared to the previous weeks’ position. Pindula News presents an update by the RBZ:

RESERVE MONEY
1. Reserve money declined by ZW$1.03 billion to ZW$26.41 billion during the week ending 4th February 2022, compared to the previous week’s position of ZW$27.44 billion.

2. The fall in reserve money largely reflected declines of ZW$922.97 million and ZW$104.52 in required reserves and currency issued, respectively.

Banks’ liquidity (RTGS balances) at the Reserve Bank also registered a decline of ZW$2.12 million.

Suspended ZIFA President Felton Kamambo arrested. Kamambo and Machana were on Saturday arrested by Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officers for fraud and contempt of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act, which was applied in their suspension on 16 November 2021.

Suspended Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president Felton Kamambo and board member responsible for finance, Philemon Machana, have been arrested on various allegations.

The SRC suspended the Kamambo-led ZIFA last November on several allegations, chief among them the board’s failure to account for public funds. The commission acted in accordance with section 30 of the SRC Act.

Kamambo, however, continued to issue statements in the capacity of ZIFA president and used the official ZIFA letterhead in all his correspondence.

It is further alleged that Kamambo fraudulently used public funds as well as changed ZIFA accounts while under suspension.

The suspended ZIFA board even went on to suspended members of the ZIFA secretariat and Premier Soccer League governors, moves which resulted in the SRC involving the police leading to the duo’s arrest.

Kamambo and Machana are being held at Highlands Police Station and are expected to appear in court on Monday.

Gospel music star Mmatema Gavu has opened up about the journey of listening to God and risking it all to be obedient in her latest Instagram post announcing an all women night of worship concert. Mmatema said after playing hide and seek with God, she finally decided to go all in with faith into executing what she believes God has called her to do.

Telling the story, Mmatema began with a trip down memory lane, describing moments that lead up to her revelation.
I’m about be very honest with you, so bare with me. In 2018 I recorded my live CD and DVD and I can tell you this, that was my worst and most rushed work. I took it down. People received it well but I think they were being kind to me. Anyway I beat myself up for it until I hosted another live show (my last show) in Soshanguve. People were really happy about it but I found it to be a disaster (I know).

“I then went to God and said ‘Lord, I am not releasing anything until it shows your excellent glory’, (hence the silence for two years). The singer said after praying God dropped a word into her spirit.

“He then gave me a word and said ‘Bring women (every sixth month) in one place and let them sing in one voice. I will hear them and I will perform. However, I need them to come and not request anything, for I already know what they need before they ask for it. Tell them to come worship’.
Mmatema said even after she knew what to do she kept running away from executing the concept until two weeks ago.

“He gave me this concept and I kept running away from it since 2019 December. Two weeks ago, I was at Shammah when He dropped it in my spirit again and when I received the testimonies from the worship night there, it was a confirmation, so I asked for guidance and He directed.

The singer has since roped in talented female Gospel artists Bongi, Chairo, Xolly Mncwango and Lebohang Kgapola. Together they will lead the audience in worship on March 20 at an outdoor event hosted at The Fortress Venue, Plot 5, OHM Street, Chloorkop, Kempton Park.

President Mnangagwa: Opposition will never rule Zimbabwe. President Mnangagwa was addressing ZANU PF supporters who were gathered at Epworth High School grounds for the party’s by-election campaign rally on Saturday. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said opposition political parties will never rule Zimbabwe.

Mnangagwa claimed that some opposition leaders in Zimbabwe were telling their supporters that it is possible to unseat ZANU PF like what Hakainde Hichilema’s opposition party did in Zambia in 2021. He said:

However, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere dismissed Mnangagwa’s comments saying only the people of Zimbabwe have the right to elect people of their choice. Mnangagwa assured residents of Epworth and surrounding areas that his government is in the process of giving them title deeds. He said:

We sourced funds and gave them to Professor Murwira’s ministry to carry out a geospatial survey. We have completed the survey and will build flats. We will move those who built on roads to the flats because we cannot move someone into the open.

Once you get hold of your title deed, you have security for your land. It becomes your inheritance. This will ultimately do away with land barons. So we are in this process of regularising settlements as well as issuing title deeds.

ZIMTA urges teachers to return to work. The Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (ZIMTA) National Executive met this Saturday to deliberate on the salary offer made by the Government to civil servants during a National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC) meeting held yesterday.

The ZIMTA National Executive, which is made up of 26 elected members and 5 appointed officers, appealed to teachers who live close to their workstations to resume their duties as soon as possible.

In a statement issued after the meeting today, ZIMTA expressed hope that its members will understand the need to resolve their differences with the Government amicably before their relationship completely breaks down. ZIMTA said:

The National Executive acknowledged that these principles should be put in the kit, while like “Oliver Twist”, we go back for some more as NJNC resolved to pursue quarterly reviews.

With finer details of the awards continuing to be exposed, we believe our members will understand the desire to de-escalate this tiff before it crosses the rubicon of peace and degenerates into a full industrial conflict.

Thus, we plead with members, in particular, those within school environs or who are within reach and without heavy financial challenges to give our learners a chance to get back to school and commence lessons as soon as is practically possible.

Here are the other issues that the ZIMTA National Executive observed and took note of following yesterday’s NJNC meeting:

• The ZWL component of the salary had in the D1 grade as adjusted represents an equivalent of USD $200 at obtaining auction rate.
• The USD component as adjusted from March 2022 and made up of salary + Covid allowance will be USD $175.
• This will give a total of USD $375 movement towards the restoration of the pre-October 2018 salary level of USD $540 for D1 grade then. This will represent 69%.
• Discounted for current inflation and as set in the ZIMTA demand for 2022, of USD $671 this movement would represent 55% of the distance covered towards the minimum poverty line.
• De-bunching/ Decompression of salaries whose provision has been made by Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, and to be applied with immediate effect has an effect of compounding the ZWL offer and improving it beyond 20%.
• The National Executive agreed to approach the Government within the next 24 hours so that the whole scale suspension of teachers and members can be lifted following which members shall be comfortable in reporting for duty.
• Meanwhile, we appeal and urge Government to avoid stoking the furnace by applying retributive measures and at the same time be considerate of the teachers’ response time, which may include waiting for the payday for some teachers.
• We take this action to preserve goodwill and utmost good faith in education and its personnel, while we continue to negotiate with all the relevant authorities.

Nurses ordered to return vaccination funds. The money was disbursed late and had already been decimated by inflation when it reached the beneficiaries, and to the healthcare workers’ shock, they were asked to deposit some of the money into the hospital account.

Healthcare workers stationed at Gokwe North District have been ordered to return part of the vaccination funds that they were granted late last year. It is not clear why the workers were asked to return some of the funds as the District nursing officer(DNO) and the accounts department gave different reasons.

The DNO said the hospital account had no money for bank charges whilst the accounts department said the fund did not have bank charges. In another development that points to possible abuse of funds, two environmental health technicians from Zumba Clinic have not received their money three months after the date of payment.

When asked why it has taken so long to pay them, the DNO said, “they will get their money. We will see in which program can we fit them in.” This has raised more questions than answers, with some healthcare workers suspicious that some people could be financially benefitting from programs that they never attended. A nurse aide who refused to be named said:

This has highlighted our case, we have always said people benefit from programmes which they never attend and this is a typical example. There are some healthcare workers who appeared on the list that was seen by this reporter who benefitted from outreach programmes but were asked to make some refunds.

The community department and DNO were attending outreach programmes most of the time but it is not clear whether they will also make refunds. Bizarrely, some healthcare workers who took part in outreach programmes were not asked to make refunds but are paying for static vaccination campaigns, yet they took part in the former.

POTRAZ: Telecel will not collapse. The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) said Telecel Zimbabwe will not collapse as it has enough subscribers and running services to sustain its operations.

POTRAZ director-general, Gift Machengete, said Telecel can continue operating provided it got foreign currency. He said:

We do not believe Telecel will collapse, their operating licence is intact and they have enough subscribers and running services to sustain their operations.

Should any mobile network provider decide to stop operations, they are mandated to give ample notice to allow subscribers to move to another network and to also allow subscribers to exhaust their airtime, SMS or data balances.

Machengete said mobile network operators needed to be prioritised in foreign currency allocation by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. According to POTRAZ, between the first quarter of 2017 and the third quarter of 2021, Telecel’s total mobile revenue share was shrinking.

Telecel lost over a million subscribers from 1 646 411 at the end of 2017 to 582 570 at the end of the third quarter of 2021, resulting in a loss in revenue. Last week, Telecel subscribers struggled to access voice calls and data services for several days after the telecoms firm experienced network challenges.

Telecel Zimbabwe spokesperson, Zitha Dube, said the telecommunications firm is struggling with “spiralling operational costs”. She said the firm has a strategic plan in place which is awaiting funding from a number of initiatives currently being pursued.

Telecel is engaging the Chinese multinational tech conglomerate, Huawei Technologies. Meanwhile, the Government, which is Telecel’s major shareholder, has been silent amid the company’s struggles.

Report: Revival of David Whitehead under threat. Business Weekly reported sources as saying a special mining grant issued to Task Mining Syndicate encroaches David Whitehead’s properties.

The revival of David Whitehead Textile Limited (DWTL) is reportedly under threat from gold mining activities on the company’s properties in Chegutu, about 100 kilometres west of Harare.

The special grant (number 8934) issued to Task Mining Syndicate by the Secretary of Mines and Mining Development measures about 10 hectares. It expires on 7 February 2024. Agri Value Chain Zimbabwe (AVCZ), a local company with diverse interests in agro-processing owns about 70 per cent stake in the company formerly owned by Lonhro plc.

AVCZ also runs a cotton ginnery, a cooking oil refinery and soya chunks processing plant within the vicinity of the mining grant. A Business Weekly source was quoted as saying: The major concern is that the mining operations have the potential to interfere with AVCZ operations and this threatens the revival of the textile company.

There has been a lot happening in terms of investments by Agri Value Chain Zimbabwe, not only the textile business but also in (cooking) oil refinery, brick manufacturing and soya chunks and concerns are that the mining operations could threaten all these investments.

AVCZ also operates a cooking oil refinery as well as margarine and washing soap plants in Harare, and a cotton ginnery in Checheche. The resuscitation of David Whitehead is being slowed due to pending legal issues.

Farmers push Tongaat Hulett to lower down milling charges. Under the division of proceeds (DOP) ratio, Tongaat Hulett, which operates mills in Triangle and Hippo Valley, is charging 23% of the total value of sugarcane milled. Farmers say the charge is too high, making it difficult for them to sustain their operations.

Sugarcane farmers in the Lowveld are pushing Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe to reduce milling charges which they consider punitive. An executive with the Commercial Sugarcane Farmers Association of Zimbabwe(CSFAZ), Daniel Tsingo, told Business Times that farmers want the milling charges to be reduced from the current 23% to at most 15% for them to make decent profits. Said Tsingo:

DOP is the model currently being used to share proceeds between farmers and millers in Zimbabwe. Farmers are not happy with the current ratio as they are not realising a fair return on their investment. The milling charges should be somewhere between 5% to 15%, not the current 23%, which is punitive.

However, Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe’s corporate Affairs Executive Ushe Chinhuru said Zimbabwean farmers are getting the highest percentage to other countries in the region. He said: As of now, negotiations are being carried out through the ministry of Industry and Commerce so that we can find a suitable ratio for all parties.

The 5% to 15% that the farmers are requesting is not enough to cover the milling costs. Actually, in Zimbabwe, the farmers are getting the highest percentage to other countries in the region.

In South Africa, for example, farmers are getting 66% of the proceeds. Millers say they pay a premium to access uninterrupted electricity from power utility ZESA Holdings, which they mainly use for irrigation.

They also say that even though they have a power agreement with ZESA, they are still subjected to load shedding, which impacts crop productivity. Millers generate some of their electricity using bagasse but it is not adequate to cover all irrigation processes which in turn affects crop yields.

To compensate for the low production of electricity, millers use coal as an alternative but the cost is very high. As such, they consider that the 23% milling charge they take from the sugarcane farmers is justified.

Man fined 5 cattle for bedding his daughter-in-law. A Rusape man was last week fined five cattle by a traditional court for having a s.e.xual relationship with his son’s wife.

Isaac Marova of Masvosva Village appeared before Chief Makoni’s court for allegedly sleeping with his daughter-in-law on several occasions before the affair was recently exposed. The two reportedly dated for about three months before the affair was exposed. They hid their incestuous relationship by using secret cellphone lines for communication.

The woman, whose identity was not revealed in court, has since left her husband, Bartholomew Marova. The relationship came to light after Bartholomew discovered some romantic messages his wife had sent and received from his father. He told the court:

I started suspecting that my wife was up to something because I would come across deleted messages on her phone. She was using a number I didn’t know and again texting a number that I didn’t know at that time.

I later saw some romantic messages on my wife’s phone from the same number. I later discovered that the other number was my father’s. I confronted him, but he flatly denied dating my wife.

Isaac denied ever dating his daughter-in-law and refuted communicating with her through the phone. When Chief Makoni ordered the parties to retrieve their phone records from the local network service provider, Econet Wireless, Isaac said he had no problem with it.

However, when Marova’s phone records were presented before the court, it showed that he texted and called his daughter-in-law daily between October 2021 to January 2022.

He later admitted to dating his son’s wife, saying “I have nothing to say. I am sorry for what happened”. Chief Makoni castigated Isaac for his wayward behaviour and ordered him to pay a fine. He was fined five cattle, of which three will go to his son and two to the chief’s court.

Chaos as popular Madzibaba opens fire at shrine. The incident which left villagers and members of the apostolic sect who were present shocked happened in Chidzvururwi Village in Chief Musikavanhu’s area. A self-proclaimed prophet is in hot soup after he last week allegedly assaulted a congregant before opening fire on another 46-year-old man as he accused him of stealing his goats.

The controversial youthful prophet, Bond Junior Gumira Machiya (28), who hails from Harare, committed the crime shortly after he had given the complainant, Phineas Muumbe, US$100 for unknown reasons. He shot Muumbe once on the left shoulder after accusing him of stealing his goats. Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident.

“Machiya who is a Harare-based prophet of an apostolic sect and Muumbe are neighbours and every time Machiya visits his rural home, he would dish out groceries as well as money to his followers.

“On this occasion, Machiya assaulted one of the congregants from Harare following a dispute over the church’s leadership. Muumbe heard screams coming from Machiya’s house and went there to investigate what was happening.

“He found Machiya armed with a pistol pointed to the ground. Machiya fired a single shot. He then gave Muumbe US$100 before accusing him of stealing his goats,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka. He shot Muumbe once on the left shoulder.

Muumbe was assisted by Nonsima Mujere who went on to report the matter to the police. Machiya was arrested, while Muumbe was rushed to St Peter’s Mission Hospital where he was admitted.
