President Mnangagwa’s false claims during Epworth rally uncovered

President Mnangagwa’s false claims during Epworth rally uncovered. President Mnangagwa claimed that half of Harare City Council councillors face corruption charges.

ZIMFACT has exposed false claims that were made by President Emmerson Mnangagwa while addressing ZANU PF supporters at the launch of the party’s 26 March by-elections campaign in Epworth, Harare, last Saturday.

He said:

Harare City Council, over half of them, are facing charges in court over corruption. So when we vote, we have a chance to replace them. According to ZIMFACT, the claim is false. Harare has 46 wards, each represented by a councillor.

While several councillors have been arrested, including former Harare mayor, Herbert Gomba, and his replacement, Jacob Mafume, on corruption allegations, the number of all reported arrests does not support Mnangagwa’s claim that half of Harare’s councillors face corruption charges.

Mnangagwa also claimed that the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange has listed new companies each month since its launch.

ZIMFACT again, says the claim is false. VFEX has listed only four companies since its launch in December 2021. Mnangagwa had said:

Since we launched VFEX, every month, or every other month, two or three international companies are registered with VFEX. So foreign currency is now coming in from outside because this stock exchange at international level.

Seed Co International, Padenga Holdings, Caledonia Mining Corporation and Bindura Nickel Corporation are the only firms that are listed on the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange.

CCC issues statement on Welshman Ncube, Thokozani Khupe viral pic

CCC issues statement on Welshman Ncube, Thokozani Khupe viral pic. The opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) has finally spoken on a photo of the party’s vice president Welshman Ncube who was pictured with former MDC-T vice president Thokozani Khupe and former MDC-T organising secretary Abednico Bhebhe seemingly emerging from a meeting.

The picture has been circulating on social media platforms since Tuesday, prompting some opposition political activists to speculate that the three could be working together, having been senior members of the original MDC at the turn of the Millenium.

In a statement, CCC said Ncube, Khupe and Bhebhe’s meeting was a private meeting that had nothing to do with the party’s programmes. CCC said:

We note concerns raised by this image. It would appear it was a private meeting. CCC is a new citizens’ project. The rollout of the program of action and all matters incidental will be announced.

Citizens mustn’t be confused or panic about the health and well-being of their project. CCC was responding specifically to a Twitter user, Dakarai Chikara, who had expressed disappointment over the picture. Chikara said:

Disappointed with that picture. Please, we do’t want Khupe in @CCCZimbabwe, she has done more damage to our struggle. Moving away from MDC was a cleansing ceremony. For us to take that dirt back is very irresponsible. We have enough support all needed is to do a crusade for people to VOTE.

Commenting on the photo, freelance journalist Hopewell Chin’ono cryptically said Khupe’s “dress sense is consistent”. Wrote Chin’ono: MaKhupe’s dress sense is consistent. You can never say that you are not sure of her taste in dressing.

You can’t complain in the future when she turns up on a date with her usual type of dress when you knew already that she likes those types of dresses. That is her style. Khupe was recently suspended and subsequently fired by MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora after she announced a split of the party.

ZINARA to introduce new travellers pass

ZINARA to introduce new travellers pass. FTEP is a toll fees pre-payment facility for regular travellers who pass through toll gates at least 15 times a month but do not qualify for a residential discount.

The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) says it will soon introduce a Frequent Travellers Express Pass (FTEP), to make it more convenient for a certain category of motorists to pay tollgates fees. ZINARA spokesperson Tinashe Mugabe said:

Motorists can prepay for their anticipated passes through the tollgates and will be issued with their FTEP disc and enjoy the benefits of being a frequent traveller.

Motorists can prepay for their anticipated passes through the tollgates and will be issued with their FTEP disc and enjoy the benefits of being a frequent traveller.

Mugabe added that the FTEP disc package comes with a minimum of 15 passes and a maximum of 25 passes per month within a valid licensing period.

According to Techzim’s Valentine Muhamba, ZINARA could be trying to curb tollgate queues for those who are predominantly involved in commerce because residents who live near toll gates have a special arrangement.

He also said this is a positive development as it allows companies in the logistics and travel industry a way around having to pay ZINARA tollgates which can sometimes be outside the reach of telecommunications services to execute digital payments.

Magaisa warns CCC leaders: Don’t take people for granted

Magaisa warns CCC leaders: Don’t take people for granted. United Kingdom-based Zimbabwe constitutional law expert and political analyst Alex Magaisa has urged the opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change national leadership not to take citizens for granted but communicate clearly to prevent uncertainty, confusion and panic.

This comes after CCC vice president Welshman Ncube was pictured with former MDC-T vice president Thokozani Khupe and former MDC-T organising secretary Abednico Bhebhe seemingly emerging from a meeting.

The picture has been circulating on social media platforms since Tuesday, prompting some opposition political activists to speculate that the three could be working together, having been senior members of the original MDC at the turn of the Millenium.

CCC, however, said Ncube, Khupe and Bhebhe’s meeting was a private meeting that had nothing to do with the party’s programmes.

In a Twitter thread, Magaisa, a Kent University law professor and former advisor to a Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, said CCC leaders risk can derail the movement if they lose focus and make mistakes. Pindula News publishes Magaisa’s post below:

1. The bond of trust between political elites in the cockpit and the passengers is very important. It is fragile and must be handled with care. People don’t want to be taken for granted or to have their emotions on a merry-go-round. Explain your movements.

2. True, sometimes those in the cockpit must make tough decisions as they steer the plane. But communication with the passengers remains important, lest there’s uncertainty, confusion and panic. Lack of communication or half messages lead to speculation which is equally unhelpful.

3. When you make important decisions, explain to the people what’s going on and why. People want to believe their leaders have the wisdom to make the right decisions. But don’t leave in a position where they must speculate. Communicate. Communicate. Communicate.

4. The CCC has the ball at its feet & everyone wants it. That’s why there’s a flurry of propaganda & other destabilisation efforts from the regime. But the Yellow Train is moving. The only people that can derail it are the leaders of the CCC if they lose focus & make mistakes.

5. Whatever decisions they take, they must be smart, well thought out & well-timed. An otherwise good decision made at the wrong time can have terrible consequences. But above all, don’t keep your people in the dark. Communicate with them. Show them some respect.

6. If you see your people speculating too much or asking “What’s going on here?” it suggests you’re not communicating well with them. It’s not a good habit. Keep your people onside by communicating well with them. If it’s good news they will support you. If not, hear them out.

Soldiers and police officers reportedly assaulted people for leaving ED’s Epworth rally early. Some ZANU PF supporters who wanted to leave President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s rally last Saturday were reportedly assaulted and forced back by soldiers and police officers.

According to the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum, the disgruntled ZANU PF supporters wanted to leave Epworth High School grounds, the venue of the rally before Mnangagwa had spoken.

The Forum also claimed that ruling party supporters forced informal traders in Mbare to close their market stalls and bussed them to attend Mnangagwa’s rally in Epworth. The people wanted to leave after an announcement that no title deeds would be given out at the rally. The Forum said:

On 12 February, ZANU PF supporters forced informal traders in Mbare to close their market stalls and attend a rally addressed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Epworth.

Buses were deployed to ferry people to Epworth, with ZANU PF youth ordering some members, most of whom got the stalls through the ZANU PF patronage system, to abandon business and attend the rally.

At the same time, some ZANU PF youths were also forcing informal dealers at Gazaland, Highfields to abandon their workstations and attend the President’s rally.

Assaults Disgruntled ZANU PF party members who attempted to leave the Epworth venue before President Emmerson Mnangagwa addressed the rally were beaten up and forced back by armed soldiers and police. The members wanted to leave after an announcement that no title deeds would be given out at the rally.

The Forum accused the Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC-T of political intolerance after the party’s supporters allegedly defaced campaign posters of Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) parliamentary and local government candidates in Highfields on Saturday.

The MDC-T was holding a rally at Zororo Grounds to launch its campaign for the by-elections scheduled to take place on 26 March this year. Said The Forum

Political intolerance On 12 February, the MDC Alliance had a rally at Zororo Centre which was addressed by its leader, Douglas Mwonzora. Before the rally, MDC-A supporters went around the rally venue, defacing campaign posters of CCC parliamentary and local government candidates.

New details emerge on Charles Yohane carjacking and murder. Reports indicate that one of the suspects in the 48-year-old Zimbabwean’s murder was arrested in Soweto after he was found driving around in the deceased’s car. New details in the robbery and murder of former Caps United and Warriors left-back Charles Yohane over the weekend in South Africa have emerged.

The car was spotted driving around Mzimhlophe for most of Sunday until it was recovered later in the day with the case now with the police. Yohane went missing on Saturday only for his body to be found in the Mzimhlophe Hostel, Soweto on Saturday evening with bullet wounds.

According to family members, the former Bidvest Wits player had gone to a match and encountered the carjackers in Soweto on his way home.

CCTV footage of Yohane’s kidnapping at a traffic light emerged where a gang of four men jumped into his BMW vehicle and forced him to drive off. The gang had reportedly failed in an attempt to hijack another car before they attacked Yohane.

According to KickOff.com, Johane had been using the car he was driving for e-hailing service Bolt on a part-time basis after training sessions at the academy where he was coaching.

The incident happened on Saturday with his body arriving at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in the early hours of Sunday after residents near the hostel heard gunshots.

One of his friends and former Warriors defender, Innocent Chikoya identified Yohane’s body. The family has started the process to repatriate the remains, with former Zimbabwe footballers pooling resources to help in the repatriation via a local funeral services company.

Mourners are gathered at the family home in Mbare but family members are not yet sure when the body is expected to arrive. Madzibaba, as Yohane was known then by his fans, was part of the dominant Steve Kwashi coached Caps United class of 1996 that won the first League Championship for the club since Independence.

Yohane also starred for the Warriors when he scored in their 3-0 win over Sudan in Khartoum in 1997 in the AFCON 1998 qualifiers. The late defender was a regular Warriors player and was part of the 2004 squad that qualified for their first-ever AFCON Tournament hosted by Tunisia.

Zimbabwe set to use drones to patrol borders

Zimbabwe set to use drones to patrol borders.  Home Affairs MinisterKazembe revealed this after meeting visiting Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (SARPCCO) chairman, General Kehla Sitole, who is also South Africa’s Commissioner of the police.

Zimbabwe plans to deploy unmanned aircraft (drones) to patrol the country’s borders in a bid to combat cross-border crime, Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe said on Wednesday. Said Kazembe:

The technology that we are deploying will assist in curbing cross-border crimes. This includes drones to monitor the borders; it also includes increasing resources for the police. We believe that we are on the right track.

We are deploying technology to deal with illegal border crossing. Zimbabwe on Tuesday announced the re-opening of its borders, which had been closed to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga said the police will intensify patrols along all the country’s borders. Said Matanga:

Since the borders are now open, the police will maintain a presence along the borders throughout the country. On his part, General Sitole said SARPCCO was also moving to use drones as part of wider measures to eradicate cross-border crimes. He said:

I am impressed that one of the strategies that Zimbabwe has already ventured into, at the border management level is the introduction of drone policing. Drone policing is one of the SARPCO strategies. But it is not going to end up at drone policing.

What we are working on is to have a safer city command centre that is going to link the drones that are patrolling the border. There are hard crimes that are happening at the border, where there is a new modus operandi, serious and violent.

Health and Allied Workers Union of Zim backs striking teachers

Health and Allied Workers Union of Zim backs striking teachers. The Government responded by effecting a blanket three-month suspension without pay on all the absentee teachers.

The National Health and Allied Workers Union of Zimbabwe (NHAWUZ) has expressed support for teachers who have not been reporting for duty since schools reopened last Monday citing incapacitation. In a statement on Tuesday, NHAWUZ criticised the unilateral action by the Government, arguing that it has no place “in a well-developed democracy”. NHAWUZ said:

We support Social dialogue and collective bargaining through trade unionism and we want to see constructive relationships between the government of Zimbabwe and teachers. This kind of relationship has proved its high value in many countries, both in times of economic growth and during a crisis.

In spite of attempts to demonize Zimbabwe’s public sector (through the Public Service debate, for instance), the problem of the irresponsibility of the banking sector, the unfairness of those paying for the reckless, corrupt and greediness of a few political elites is very much difficult to align with neoliberal conventions.

This logic of injustice and unfairness has to reawaken politics and galvanize actions that governments dismiss at their own peril. On Wednesday, the Zimbabwe Public Service Commission (PSC) gave all teachers, deputy heads and heads of schools until Tuesday 22 February 2022 to report for duty.

The PSC said that teachers who have either not reported for duty or are reporting for duty but not teaching will be deemed to have resigned if they ignore the 22nd of February deadline.

A dispute emerged between Greatman and TEO Events over the former’s failure to pay US$2 500 for services provided at his wedding. Greatman wedded Silibaziso Masara two weeks ago at an event that was dubbed the wedding of the year.

The musician accused TEO Events of dishonesty in handling donated funds and goods. He told a local weekly publication that TEO Events completely took over the event and monopolized everything.

However, Matthew Mhembere of TEO Events said Greatman and his family were being ungrateful. He argued that it was not his responsibility to meet their debts. Mhendere said he doesn’t want to talk to Greatman and his family again.

Temba Mliswa vows to fight for suspended teachers

Temba Mliswa vows to fight for suspended teachers. Outspoken Norton MP Temba Mliswa vowed to stand with the suspended educators whom he said have been dedicated to their profession even during difficult times.

Mliswa, (Independent), has criticised the Government for suspending teachers and headmasters in his constituency, saying authorities’ response is archaic. He said:

Heard that some teachers and headmasters in Norton were served with suspension letters. It’s pathetic of Govt. It is the one that has failed to pay them adequately and when they complain it comes in with a heavy hand. They cannot be fired or suspended.

The response by Govt is archaic, you don’t do that in this era. I will stand by them. They have been dedicated through very difficult times and I promise to fight with them through it all. I will get the names and we strategise on the way forward to fight this grave injustice.

The former ZANU PF Mashonaland West provincial chairman queried why “corrupt individuals” are moving freely yet the Government descends heavily on poor civil servants. Added Mliswa:

As Norton we had very great results and after that one gets suspended because they need to be paid more? What’s that?

We have corrupt individuals out there to whom nothing has been done and yet we target poorly paid civil servants. Our Government is taking advantage of our people being said to be passive. But it’s enough. We can’t be quiet at such injustice.

Last week, Primary and Secondary Education Minister, Evelyn Ndlovu, suspended all teachers who did not report for duty when schools opened on 7 February, for three months without pay.

The suspended teachers did not report for duty citing incapacitation while demanding that the Government restores their pre-October 2018 salaries of US$540 per month.

Liverpool stun Inter Milan 2 – 0 in Italy. The Reds looked set for a goalless draw in the first leg in Italy until Brazil forward Roberto Firmino got on the end of Andrew Robertson’s corner to head his side into the lead.

Liverpool took a huge step towards the Champions League quarter-finals after scoring two late goals against Inter Milan in the San Siro.

Mohamed Salah added a second with a deflected effort from inside the box which means Jurgen Klopp’s side take a sizeable advantage into the second leg at Anfield on 8 March.

Italian champions Inter hit the bar through Hakan Çalhanoglu and were on top for long periods of the second half before Firmino struck in the 75th minute.

Liverpool scored from their only two attempts on target and will be firm favourites to progress when the two sides meet in the deciding leg next month.

It was a particularly memorable night for midfielder Harvey Elliott, who became the youngest player ever to start a match in the competition for Liverpool at the age of 18 years and 318 days.

The only negative on an otherwise upbeat night for the Reds was an injury to Portugal forward Diogo Jota, who was replaced by goalscorer Firmino at the start of the second half after suffering an ankle injury.

Lethal Reds impress in Italy
Liverpool have now won seven matches in all competitions, with this arguably the most impressive of the current run.

But Klopp’s team had to dig deep as Inter looked the more threatening side after a strong start by the Premier League club.

Former Manchester City forward Edin Dzeko found himself clean through in the first half before a vital challenge by Virgil van Dijk, who was captaining the Reds in the absence of Jordan Henderson.

The hosts went close again when Ivan Perisic whipped in a cross, but Lautaro Martinez was unable to give Inter the lead. In a fascinating match, Liverpool took the lead through Firmino’s glancing 75th-minute header before Salah doubled the lead eight minutes later.

There is still work to do for Klopp’s team but it is going to require something extra special from Inter to turn this tie around.

Liverpool remain in the hunt for four trophies and could have one in the bag by the time Inter visit Merseyside, with the Reds facing Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on 27 February.

Teenager Elliott embraces San Siro stage
Despite it only being half full because of Covid-19 restrictions, there was an incredible atmosphere inside the San Siro for the first meeting between these two clubs for 14 years.

Elliott, who does not turn 19 until April, embraced the occasion on what was his first start since suffering a serious ankle injury in September. The teenager did not look out of place on one of the most famous stages in world football and produced a cross in the first half which was just cut out before Salah could poke it over the line.

Elliott was replaced in the 59th minute as part of a triple change as Klopp attempted to turn the tide as Inter threatened – a move that worked as Liverpool went on to establish a strong advantage.

“He did the job, he was working incredibly hard, but when you’re 18 years old and playing one of the most experienced teams in word football, it is not a walk in the park,” said Klopp. “So it was an important game for him and very helpful for us as well.”

Bayern Munich held to a 1-all draw by Red Bull Salzburg. Winger Coman ghosted in at the far post in the 90th minute and converted following Thomas Muller’s flick. Six-time winners Bayern Munich needed a late Kingsley Coman equaliser to avoid a shock last-16 first-leg defeat at an impressive Red Bull Salzburg.

Salzburg substitute Chukwubuike Adamu had netted the opener with a delightful curling finish into the corner.

The hosts could have nicked a second at 1-0, but Karim Adeyemi’s shot was saved and Adamu’s follow-up was blocked. The vibrant home side were appearing in the knockout stage of the Champions League for the first time, but did not look out of place against an often flat Bayern side.

The Bundesliga champions suffered a stunning 4-2 home loss against Bochum at the weekend and avoided back-to-back defeats for the first time since 2019.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side cruised through the group stage by winning all six games, but found it difficult to deal with the youthfulness and pace of their opponents.

Salzburg, fielding the youngest average starting side in the Champions League since Ajax in 2003, took the lead on 21 minutes through Adamu’s lovely effort.

Brenden Aaronson cut onto his left and forced a smart save from Sven Ulreich, while Germany international Adeyemi’s effort was straight at the Bayern understudy keeper.

Bayern improved in the second half and Leroy Sane was denied by Philipp Kohn’s sharp saves, before Frenchman Coman drew his side level late on.

President Mnangagwa blames UK for teachers strike

President Mnangagwa blames UK for teachers strike. This came out of a meeting Mnangagwa held with Zimbabwe Federation of Trade Unions (ZFTU) leaders on Monday. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has blamed the United Kingdom government for instigating the ongoing strike by schoolteachers.

Schoolteachers have failed to report for duty since the start of the first term of 2020 arguing they are incapacitated because of poor salaries. They are demanding US$540 monthly salaries.

Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com after a three-hour meeting with Mnangagwa, ZFTU secretary general, Kennias Shamuyarira said the president blamed Boris Johnson’s government of instigating the teachers’ strike.

“He (Mnangagwa) cited last year’s incident in which a British minister told the House of Commons that he was working closely with teachers’ unions in Zimbabwe to help in their regime agenda,” Shamuyarira said.

He was referring to an incident in which, minister of State of the UK for South Asia, the UN and the Commonwealth, Tariq Mahmoud Ahmad, claimed some teachers’ unions in Zimbabwe were collaborating with Britain to toppled Mnangagwa’s government.

“However, we shot down the matter and argued that that we could not focus on debates transpiring in other nations and address our shortcomings,” Shamuyarira said.

“For instance, we told him that teachers are on strike purely based on the hardships they are going through. Imagine the poverty datum line is now hovering around ZW$90 000 and a teacher earns just ZW$20 000, it does not require the UK interfere,” he said.

Shamuyarira also said Mnangagwa assured that them he would personally lift the suspension of teachers who are on strike unconditionally.

“We urged him to reign in some of his ministers who have unilaterally decided to suspend striking teachers and he assured our representatives that he was going to deal with lifting of the teachers’ suspensions through their trade unions.”

3 killed after 2 VW Golf cars driven by friends collide. Police said two VW Golf vehicles were travelling west on 12th Avenue Extension, and both drivers planned to turn left into the Bulawayo Athletics Club (BAC) when tragedy struck at around 2AM.

Three people were killed and two others are being treated in hospital after a two-vehicles collision in Bulawayo early Wednesday morning. The occupants of the two vehicles were all friends “on a pub crawl”, according to police sources.

Inspector Abednico Ncube of Bulawayo police said: “The vehicle driving in the right lane and slightly behind turned into the other vehicle and hit it on the right rear, close to the fuel tank area, causing the other driver to lose control of his vehicle which veered off the road and smashed into a tree.

“Three people died on the spot while two others were ferried to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for further management.” Ncube said the cause of the accident was “excessive speeding under the circumstances.”

“A charge of culpable homicide has been preferred against the driver of the vehicle which cause the crash,” Ncube said. “Motorists are urged to apply themselves fully to save lives and avoid unnecessary accidents.”

One of the dead has been named as Ralph Fikile Mguni, who graduated from the University of Zimbabwe in December last year. He was a passenger in the vehicle sent careering off the road.

Zimbabwean in SA jailed 55 years for robbery spree. Joburg SAPS spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele said Mabena was sentenced to 15 years for a robbery at an Engen filling station, and another 15 years for a robbery at a Wimpy outlet at the filling station.

The Brixton Regional Court in Joburg has sentenced Zimbabwean national Artwell Mabena to 55 years’ imprisonment after convicting him on four counts of business robbery, armed robbery and attempted robbery

The third count, of armed robbery, got Mabena an additional 15-year sentence. Mabena received 10 years for the fourth count, attempted robbery. The 31-year-old will spend an effective 20 years behind bars.

“The accused and two accomplices robbed the Engen garage at corner Beyers Naude Drive and Wilson Street in Fairlands on July 26, 2020 at 18:30. They entered the shop pretending to be customers,” said Mbele.

The three robbers took an undisclosed amount of money from the tills, holding customers and employees at gunpoint.

Still on the rampage, Mabena and his accomplices robbed a Wimpy outlet at the filling station. They also attempted to rob a customer of a cellphone, and a fight erupted.

“Two suspects (who were with Mabena) managed to run away and the accused was overpowered. The firearm used in the commission of the crime was confiscated,” said Mbele.

Mabena has been in custody from 2020. “The conviction is a result of diligent work done by the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Willem van Rooyen of the Johannesburg Central trio detectives,” said Mbele.
