Democracy must be about the relationship between the state and the people

$

Countries vary in history, culture, system and economic development level, but peoples of all countries uphold the shared human values of peace, development, equity, justice, democracy and freedom. Peace and development are our common cause, equity and justice our common aspiration, and democracy and freedom our common pursuit.” — Xi Jinping.
Off the bat, I think that it is important for me to make the assertion that, within the extensive and complex global political terrain, there are those systems and values that are so universal that they may never mean the same thing to everyone. One such concept or principle is democracy.

We have seen democracy having varied applications throughout the world and its conceptualisation being suited to various national conditions. Does this fundamentally mean that one country is more or less democratic than the other because of the differences that may have in the application of democracy within the context of their very different national conditions?

It can never be disputed that democracy is one of the common values that are universally appreciated and is a subject of much attention and interest. Democracy has been perched as some sort of moral barometer to measure not only the distance between the State and the people but has also been naively postured as some safeguard against injustice, anarchy and tyranny.
One must, however, recognise that such a value that is so fundamental to our humanity, as it speaks directly to our agency and those societal functions that make us whole, must be diversified in order to adapt to the various material conditions that beset many of our countries. Effective democracy cannot be achieved within the confines of rigidly set confines.

The values of democracy are rooted in history, culture and tradition. It takes diverse forms and develops along the paths chosen by different people based on their experiences and innovation.

Whether a country is democratic depends on whether its people are genuinely the custodians of the character and trajectory of that society. Later in the article, I will make the point of how this must never be limited to an election and participation in this periodic event. Democracy must be about the relationship between the state and the people.

To really appreciate the value and extent of democracy, we consciously start to undress our very limited Eurocentric understanding of democracy and concede to the fact that there is no fixed model of democracy, which manifests itself in many forms. Assessing the myriad political systems in the world against a single yardstick is in itself undemocratic.

In order to make a more poignant analysis of this, let’s take a closer look at China and how democracy is expressed and defined relative to the specific national conditions in China. In modern-day China, there is the Two Sessions event.

Former Zambian President Rupiah Bwezani Banda has died

Rupiah Banda is dead, Rupiah Bwezani Banda was the fourth President of Zambia from 2008 to 2011 – cause of death.

He was fondly called the President for all Zambians. A very cheerful & humble man. Zambia loses its 4th Republican President, Rupiah Banda, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2020. A sincere condolences to the immediate family and the country at large.

As President, Rupia Banda is committed to improving Zambia’s economy to ensure security, stability and prosperity for all Zambians. In particular, he works to improve health care and education, increase agricultural production, and ensure and increase employment opportunities in Zambia, especially for people in rural areas.

President Banda belongs to a generation of young people involved in Zambia’s anti-colonial struggle. At the age of 27, he became Zambia’s first ambassador to Egypt. He left office in 1967, the year of the Six-Day War. At the age of 30, he was the ambassador of Zambia to the United States and moved to Washington, D.C.

In 1970, he was named general manager of the National Agricultural Marketing Board of the National Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NAMBOARD). He then became the head of the Rural Development Corporation (RDC), a state-owned agricultural holding company, one of the largest state-owned conglomerates at the time.

In 1974, President Banda became Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. From 1975, he served as Minister for Foreign Affairs of Zambia at a pivotal moment in Southern African history. At the time, Zambia’s diplomacy was focused on the liberation of southern Africa, and Zambia played a vital role in events and initiatives that brought about a settlement.

Zambia’s continued interest in liberating the region means its foreign minister is one of the key figures in the diplomacy and events that ultimately lead to the region’s liberation. As such, Banda is well known and has interacted extensively with many contemporary leaders in the region.

He also chairs the UN Council for Namibia, which is effectively the government of Namibia, while the issue of South Africa’s contentious mandate to the territory is being resolved.

President Banda has been his deputy in the Lusaka Munali seat for many years. He also held the position of senior district governor of Lusaka, serving as the political and administrative head of Zambia’s capital.

Following the 2006 parliamentary elections, he was appointed Vice-President of the Dr. government. Levi Mwanawasa was selected. He assumed the presidency of Mwanawasa following Mwanawasa’s stroke in June 2008, and became acting president following Mwanawasa’s death in August 2008. A candidate for the multi-party Democratic ruling movement, he won the presidential election in October 2008. When he was re-elected in September 2011, he was defeated by opposition leader Michael Sala.

This unidentified woman this Friday afternoon lost US$40, ZWL300, and a passport to two female con-artists, who used the old-fashioned style popularly known as ‘chadonha‘ in street lingo.

She was duped while walking in Africa Unity Square in Harare’s city centre.

The con-artists pretended as if they had picked some money in full view of their victim before luring her to a nearby public toilet.

According to the victim, the two ladies said they wanted to share the money equally with her.

“I actually saw real money and these two women told me tanhonga tese.

“They asked me to go into the toilet to count the money but first I had to leave my wallet and cell phone with them.

“But, when I got into the toilet ndaona muchi sox muya mave nemapepa and when I returned the women were nowhere to be seen, ” she narrated.

Well-wishers contacted her relatives who promised to pick her up.

Witnesses claimed she was the third victim of the day at the same area after two other men also fell prey to their trickery earlier.

This is how Khanyi Mbau’s s.e.x scene was shot

The Wife, Showmax’s show, has been a hot topic since its debut last year. The show continues to break ground in Mzansi telenovela industry with its fascinating storyline and the actors’ unique acting skills.

The show has introduced a certain kind of acting that had never been heard of in Mzansi.

It has produced the most raunchy scenes any telenovela has ever had in the history of the South African television industry.

A recent scene from season 2, episode 11 is still talk of the town on social media.

The season focuses on Zansile and Nkosana’s love life, played by Khanyi Mbau and Mondli Makhoba respectively.

The episode has been the most talked about thing on the South African trending list after Riky Rick’s death two weeks ago.

And, according to an entertainment commentator Phil Mphela, the bedroom scene was the most explicit scene in the history of South African telenovela.

Ironically, the scene has attracted so much criticism online, but at the same time increased the show’s troubled viewership records.

Could it be that viewers’ curiosity led many to start watching the show?

The Wife has had a few shortcomings lately. Viewers have been complaining of boring episodes from Zandile.

The explicit scenes have been seen as a deliberate way to make the show interesting again and revive the boring storyline.

There has been a debate online on whether Zandile and Nkosana’s scene is real or not.

This is because the close-up explicit scenes were recorded with so much realness and left a vivid picture that it could have been real.

But was the explicit scenes real, many have been asking?

Well, it normally depends on the actors’ willingness to engage in the raunchy acts.

The s.e.x scene between Khanyi Mbau and Mondli was, however, not real.

The show producers used a few acting props to come up with a real scene.

This is what they used;

  • Nippies / Nippets – to cover an actor’s areola
  • Merkins – a pubic wig, often used for period pieces or for actresses who want more coverage of their pubic area
  • Hibue / Shibue – a strapless thong that sticks to an actor’s pelvis, which acts as a barrier that prevents genitalia from touching
  • Vajoga – a yoga mat for genitalia, used as a genital barrier when two bodies are grinding against each other
  • Swim Shapers – used for n1pple covers or as a barrier to cover female genitalia
  • Mints / Gum – for fresh breath
  • Heat Pads – to keep actors warm between takes
  • Flesh-colored underwear – to use as a modesty garment
  • Aloe Vera gel – to soothe skin irritated by modesty garments
  • Bright green tape – so the cameraman knows the actor’s boundaries
  • Evian water spray and glycerine – for creating the impression of beads of sweat
  • Pen1s cups – a genitalia barrier for men
  • Exacto knife – for any makeshift barrier.

After the recent episode of The Wife, it appears Kudzai Mushonga, Khanyi Mbau’s boyfriend is not completely comfortable with it.

The episode baffled a lot of viewers after it featured one of the most explicit s.e.x scenes to be witnessed on Mzansi TV.

The scene has been trending on social media and many people aired out their opinion on the issue.

Many of us are wondering if her boyfriend Kudzai can swallow all this drama.

However, if a video shared by Zimcelebs is to go by, it looks like Kudzai Mushonga is not happy nor comfortable with the s_e.x scenes.

Kudzai says:

“I don’t wanna act strong because ummh… OH MY WORD!”

Watch the video below:

Meanwhile, Khanyi Mbau recently took to her Instagram page and gushed over her supportive boyfriend Kudzai.

She said she is grateful and very lucky to have a man who supports her as she follows her dreams.

What might have prompted her to do so are the reactions of her fans who also questioned how Kudzai could have felt following the scenes.

It’s not easy seeing your partner on TV making love to someone else and also knowing that many people are watching it as well.

Social media users can’t stop talking about the explicit raunchy bedroom scene between Zandile (Khanyi Mbau) and Nkosana (Mondli Makhoba).

Controversial Twitter user, Chris Excel said that the production created the explicit bedroom content deliberately.

“They made those sex scenes on THE WIFE to distract y’all since you were complaining that it’s now boring They know we’re an horny Nation… We support sex more than an actual purpose of the show .. That’s why Shower hour on Big brother has more views than an actual show. “

Kim Kardashian has gone Instagram official with Pete Davidson in a photo dump posted on Friday. The “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star posted a selection of loved-up snaps of her and the 28-year-old comic on Friday, just over a week after she was declared ‘legally single’ by a judge in California amid her divorce from Kanye West, 44.

In the caption of the photo dump, the 41-year-old reality television personality wrote: “Whose car are we gonna take?! In one of the images, Pete – who met the ‘SKIMS’ founder when she hosted SNL, the weekly NBC sketch show he stars on – is gazing into Kim’s eyes as she puckers up.

The second photo posted by Kim – who shares North, eight, Saint, six, Chicago, four, and Psalm, two, with her “Gold Digga” rapper ex – is a black-and-white selfie of the pair, who have been linked since October.
She said: “I have not filmed with him, and I’m not opposed to it. It’s just not what he does. But if there was an event happening and he was there, he wouldn’t tell the cameras to get away. I think I might film something really exciting coming, but it wouldn’t be for this season. It wouldn’t reach until next season.”
Kim reassured faithful viewers – who will now be following her and the rest of her famous family on their new Hulu reality series ‘The Kardashians’ – she will “always be honest and open”.

She continued: “You’ll just have to see, but I’m always open and honest and I’ll never not be, so you’ll definitely get that honesty and openness when it comes to the relationship that I’m in. I definitely explain how we met and who reached out to who and how it happened and all the details that everyone wants to know. I’m definitely open to talking, and I definitely explain it.

Tyler Perry and Brendan O’Carroll team up on A Madea Homecoming

When doyen film-maker Tyler Perry announced he was retiring his popular alter-ego character, Mabel “Madea” Earlene Simmons in 2019, fans were gobsmacked.

Since the release of “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” in 2006, Madea has embedded herself in the hearts of hordes of fans around the world. Aside from being a larger-than-life force of nature dressed in the frumpiest of dresses, Madea is as endearing as she is feisty. She commands respect, and challenging her is simply asking for trouble.

By his own admittance, Perry confirmed the character is a PG-friendly version of both his mom and aunt.
The “Madea” movie franchise has become immensely popular for addressing societal dilemmas synonymous with the African-American community. At the same time, Perry ridicules the stereotypes that remain a challenge to this day.

Aside from the side-splitting scenarios as Madea dips into her arsenal of jibes, the franchise also inspires and empowers to some extent. But all good things come to an end – or so fans thought – until Perry returned with “A Madea Homecoming” and he found the perfect partner in crime – Brendan O’Carroll, who is famous for his doppelgänger character, Agnes Brown.

During a recent Zoom video call, I got to chat with Perry and O’Carroll. Although it was brief, the laughs were plenty as O’Carroll said the most waggish things with a poker face.

India says it accidentally fired missile into Pakistan

$

India said on Friday it had accidentally fired a missile into Pakistan this week because of a “technical malfunction” during routine maintenance, giving its version of events after Pakistan summoned India’s envoy to protest.

Military experts have in the past warned of the risk of accidents or miscalculations by the nuclear-armed neighbours, which have fought in numerous armed clashes, usually over the disputed territory of Kashmir.

Tensions have eased in recent months, and the incident, which may have been the first of its kind, immediately raised questions about safety mechanisms.

“On 9 March 2022, in the course of routine maintenance, a technical malfunction led to the accidental firing of a missile,” the Indian Ministry of Defence said in a three-paragraph statement.

“It is learnt that the missile landed in an area of Pakistan. While the incident is deeply regrettable, it is also a matter of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident.”

The ministry said the government had “taken a serious view and ordered a high-level Court of Enquiry”.

Pakistani officials said the missile was unarmed and had crashed near the country’s eastern city of Mian Channu, about 500 km (310 miles) from the capital Islamabad.

Pakistan’s foreign office summoned India’s charge d’affaires in Islamabad to lodge a protest over what it called an unprovoked violation of its airspace, saying the incident could have endangered passenger flights and civilian lives.

Pakistan warned India “to be mindful of the unpleasant consequences of such negligence and take effective measures to avoid the recurrence of such violations in future”.

Ayesha Siddiqa, an expert on military affairs and South Asian matters, tweeted that “India-Pak should be talking about risk mitigation”.

“Both states have remained confident about control of nuclear weapons but what if such accidents happen again & with more serious consequences?”

One senior Pakistani security official told Reuters, on the condition of anonymity, that the incident had raised alarm and could have escalated into a “critical untoward situation”.

“The admission that it was a missile was very nonchalant,” he said. “What does this say about their safety mechanisms and the technical prowess of very dangerous weapons? The international community needs to have a very close look at this.”

The official said it was possibly a BrahMos missile – a nuclear-capable, land-attack cruise missile jointly developed by Russia and India.

According to the U.S.-based Arms Control Association, the missile’s range is between 300 km (186 miles) and 500 km (310 miles), making it capable of hitting Islamabad from a northern Indian launch pad.

The Pakistani official wondered if the incident meant that India had “missiles in ready-to-launch positions and pointed at Pakistan, and that too without any safeguard of a command and control system”.

A Pakistani military spokesman told a news conference on Thursday evening that a “high-speed flying object” originating from the northern Indian city of Sirsa had crashed in eastern Pakistan.

“The flight path of this object endangered many national and international passenger flights both in Indian and Pakistani airspace as well as human life and property on ground,” he said.

A Pakistan air force official said the object, flying at 40 000 feet and three times the speed of sound, had flown 124 km (77 miles) in Pakistani airspace.

Happymon Jacob, a professor of international studies at New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University, said both sides had handled the situation well.

“It gives me great hope that the two nuclear weapon states dealt with the missile incident in a mature manner,” he wrote on Twitter. “New Delhi should offer to pay compensation for the Pak house that was destroyed.

Brighton 0 – 2 Liverpool

Liverpool reduced leaders Manchester City’s advantage to three points as victory at Brighton extended their Premier League winning run to eight games.

Luis Diaz continued the fine start to his Liverpool career as he raced on to Joel Matip’s superb pass and headed past the onrushing Robert Sanchez after 19 minutes.

The Brighton goalkeeper was fortunate not to receive any punishment as he clattered into the Colombian forward, whose celebrations were put on hold as he received treatment following the high challenge.

Mohamed Salah sealed the three points with a second-half penalty awarded after a handball by Yves Bissouma – with the Egypt forward’s 20th strike of the campaign bringing up Liverpool’s 2,000th Premier League goal.

It is a fifth successive defeat for Brighton, for whom Danny Welbeck went closest to scoring with two minutes remaining but Alisson produced a fine save to avoid any late complications.

Liverpool’s victory maintains the pressure on title rivals Manchester City, who travel to Crystal Palace on Monday (20:00 GMT).

Brentford 2 – 0 Burnley

Burnley’s survival hopes took a huge blow as Ivan Toney’s two late goals for Brentford settled their Premier League match and took the Bees closer to securing safety.

The Clarets looked set to move out of the bottom three until Toney headed in Christian Eriksen’s lovely cross with four minutes to go.

Toney then won a penalty deep into injury time, with Nathan Collins sent off for bringing him down, and he slammed in the spot-kick to seal the win.

Burnley remains a point behind 17th-placed Everton, who have two games in hand, while Brentford are now nine points clear of the Clarets.

Burnley had the best chance of the game until those late strikes when Jay Rodriguez’s swerving 30-yard strike cannoned off the crossbar.

They only had one effort on target, when a terrible Rico Henry backpass played in Maxwel Cornet but his shot was stopped by David Raya.

Burnley always seems to get out of relegation trouble despite poor starts but their six-year spell in the top flight has rarely been in such danger.

Back-to-back wins in February – along with victory over Brentford in October their only wins of the season – have been followed up by one point from four games.

Sean Dyche’s side either need to win more games in the last 11 matches of the season than the first 27 – or else hope Leeds and Everton, who have both changed managers recently, keep losing.

They created nowhere near enough chances to win, with Cornet’s tame finish and Rodriguez’s thunderous strike the only moments resembling chances.

To make matters worse, Collins’ late red card for denying Toney a clear goalscoring opportunity reduces their options at the back with captain Ben Mee still injured.

Meanwhile, Toney is singlehandedly dragging Brentford to safety – with five goals in the past eight days against teams in the relegation zone.

His hat-trick took care of Norwich in a 3-1 win last weekend and he now has eight goals in his past six games.

Thomas Frank’s side moves on to 30 points and these season’s teams are unlikely to need to reach the 38-point mark to stay up.

They were far from spectacular but they did have the best chances before Toney’s late double.

Eriksen, making his first home start, had a 20-yard deflected shot saved by Nick Pope and Vitaly Janelt headed over the bar.

“We want peace, we don’t want noise. Noise was there during the war when there was death and injury. Now we are at a stage where we are keeping our inheritance,” said the President.

President Mnangagwa attended the Installation Ceremony as a son-in-law of the Negomo family, with Paradzayi Kutyauripo being installed as the 13th Chief Negomo.

He also handed over 120 bicycles to local headmen in the area.

Increased use of Zim dollar to maintain demand of goods and services

THE country’s monetary authorities are optimistic that the increased use of the Zimbabwe Dollar will sustain the current demand for goods and services and in return propel industrial production for the benefit of the economy.

The introduction of the Zimbabwe dollar was premised on the need to have financial sovereignty in the administration of the monetary policy and develop the country’s local production and export competitiveness.

Over the past two years, Zimbabwe has recorded increased domestic production owing to the central bank’s support of the local currency and bridging the forex gap with the Auction System which continues to bear fruit.

Despite inflation challenges, most of which are on account of external shocks, the monetary authorities are conscious of the Zimbabwe dollar’s high velocity in spearheading demand that in turn continues to stimulate industrial productivity.

“The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe is committed to bringing exchange rate stability that’s why we are pursuing a tight monetary policy to make sure that money supply growth is contained, but at the same time we are excited about the local currency’s capacity in driving demand for goods and services which helps the economy in its growth aspirations,” said RBZ Monetary Policy Committee Member, Mr Persistence Gwanyanya.

Industry is encouraging authorities to continue with measures to strengthen the Zimbabwe dollar to sustain current stability which is critical in the country’s journey towards vision 2030.

“As industry, we note that there is an increased usage of the local currency which is good for business continuity, however, moderation is needed to curtail the volatility which might affect the economy in the long term,” noted ZNCC President, Dr Tinashe Manzungu.

In a show of confidence in the Zimbabwe Dollar, the government recently announced that taxes, duties, levies, and mining royalties, among other statutory obligations, can be paid using the local currency.

Kenya lifts remaining COVID-19 restrictions

Kenya lifted its remaining COVID-19 restrictions on Friday, including a ban on large indoor gatherings such as religious services and a requirement to present a negative COVID-19 test for arriving air passengers.

Though Kenyans should continue heeding public health measures such as handwashing and social distancing, face masks are no longer mandatory in public and all quarantine measures for confirmed COVID-19 cases are halted with immediate effect, Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe told a news conference.

For the past month the East African country’s COVID-19 test positivity rate has remained below 1%, he added, attributing this to the rising number of Kenyans opting to get vaccinated.

In November, the government announced that proof of vaccination would be required by Dec. 21 to access schools, transport, state offices, hotels, bars, restaurants, national parks and wildlife reserves.

But a court blocked the move amid uncertainty over who would police it or what to do about people unable to access vaccines. The minister did not mention the order in his remarks on Friday.

Kenya, with a population of 54 million, has recorded less than 35 daily COVID infections over the past week, according to government statistics. About 323,000 infections, and 5,600deaths, have been recorded throughout the pandemic since 2020. Nearly 29% of Kenyan adults are fully vaccinated, more than most countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

St Mary’s residents to benefit from Solar Power on boreholes

Residents of St Mary’s in Chitungwiza are poised to benefit from the installation of solar power on boreholes being sunk under the Presidential Scheme to restore the provision of safe tap water in the suburb.

Olivia Musavenga and Beatrice Shenje represent a crop of young mothers in St Mary’s suburb who are raising families in the absence of running water exposing them to unhealthy living conditions.

Recycling and reuse of water from dishwashing and laundry has been normalised at their place of residence.

“We don’t even have a tap here because running water is not available, so we fetch water a distance away and store it in buckets,” said Beatrice.

Relief, however, has been brought through the Presidential Borehole Scheme spearhead by Prevail International in partnership with the ruling Zanu PF party, to provide clean tap water after the sinking of solarised boreholes.

“The programme is progressing well so far we have sunk 15 holes and they should be 20 by
Tuesday. From then, we expect to have tanked and solarised. From St Mary’s we are moving to Harare East and expect to sink 60,” said Mr Paul Tungwarara, Prevail International CEO.

Zanu PF St Mary’s aspiring Legislator Cde Nobert Jinjika reaffirmed the ruling party’s commitment to improving the provision of social services to the residents.

“Some of us have never come to find tap water in this Constituency, but the President is ensuring that everyone regardless of party affiliation benefits. So as we finish, President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to launch them all at once,” he said.

Fifteen boreholes have so far been sunk during the past week in St Mary’s, with the programme targeting to complete 40 in Chitungwiza.

Most urban areas have struggled to access portable water regularly as a result of several factors, chief among them, failure by the opposition-led councils to put their priorities right in terms of service delivery.

TV personality and celebrity chef Lorna Maseko is returning to the small screen. Why the hoopla since this is her playground? Well, it’s been a while since fans have seen her. She was on the celebrity edition of M-Net’s “MasterChef SA”, she hosted “Top Chef SA” and bagged her own cooking show, “The Hostess with Lorna Maseko”, on SABC3.

And the award-winning cookbook author of “Celebrate with Lorna Maseko” will once again be doing what she loves best – talking food and tucking into the best of what Mzansi has to offer on BBC Lifestyle’s “Homegrown Tastes South Africa”.

The epitome of grace, I chatted to her post the media launch of the show on Wednesday. She couldn’t stop raving about the show and proudly claimed it’s unlike anything on the small screen.
That’s high praise, of course. Perhaps, a tad biased, too. After all, Chef Nti did “Street Food in Africa”. And Siba Mtongana did something similar as well.

But Maseko isn’t far off the mark, this new food show offers something different. It looks at food from gourmet cuisine to urban street food culture. It also delves deeper by looking at ingredients unique to a region, sustainability in the food sector and fynbos foraging.

Karabo Poppy, a creative illustrator, street artist and graphic designer; Katlego Malatji, an entrepreneur, CEO of HomeComing Events and the head of legal and business affairs at Sony Music Africa; Pearl Modiadie, TV and radio presenter, actor and producer; Kamohelo Bombe, a TV presenter and poultry farmer; Dineo Maduna, a travel blogger and entrepreneur; Jason Fortuin, executive chef at the Drostdy Hotel; Lungiswa Joe, a ceramicist from Cape Town and the founder of the Inxwala Slow Market; Tracey-Lee Oliver, a singer, actor and comedian; Khaya Mthethwa, a gospel singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist; and, last but not least, Jo-Anne Strauss, an international master of ceremonies, speaker and entrepreneur, join Maseko on her foodie adventure across South Africa’s beautiful cities.
