Harare mayor Jacob Mafume says he will challenge his purported recall as a councillor by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking to a local publication on Wednesday, Mafume argued that his purported recall is an attempt to cover up corruption at Harare City Council. He said:

The purported recall is null and void. There is a court order which says I can only be recalled by Settlement Chikwinya (former PDP secretary-general), and he did not write this letter (to Moyo).

This purported recall is an attempt to cover up the thievery, the looting, the waste of council resources that they are doing.

I have refused to sign dubious contracts; I have refused to engage in dubious activities and I have refused to partake in the grand theft that is happening under July Moyo and his cronies.

I dismiss the recall with the contempt it deserves.

Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo on Tuesday wrote to Harare City Council notifying the local authority about Mafume’s recall by the PDP.

Mafume became a councillor in 2018 running on an MDC Alliance ticket but had been sponsored by the PDP which was one of the alliance parties.

However, by the time the 2018 general elections were held, individuals purporting to be current leaders of the PDP participated as members of the Rainbow Coalition led by Joice Mujuru.

Mafume was among several PDP officials who joined the MDC Alliance and had parted ways with Lucia Matibenga and others who joined the Mujuru-led coalition.

The Supreme Court later ruled that individual parties in the MDC Alliance could recall their members from councils or parliament.

The Lucia Matibenga-led People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has recalled Bulawayo Ward 24 councillor Arnold Batirai from council.

Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo notified the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) in a letter dated 29 March 2022.

PDP said Batirai had ceased to be a member of the party after he joined the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) led by Nelson Chamisa.

Moyo said in terms of section 278 (1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, as read with Section (1) (K), Ward 24 is now vacant. He wrote:

I wish to inform you that I am in receipt of a letter from the People’s Democratic Party stating that the following Councillor has ceased to be a member of the Party through automatic termination of their membership as they have since joined Citizen Coalition for Change (CCC).

In terms of section 121 of the Electoral Act, please proceed to inform the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) of this vacancy.

The PDP also recalled former Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume this week.

Former Labour and Social Welfare Minister Petronella Kagonye has been acquitted on two counts of fraud by a Harare magistrate.

In her ruling on Wednesday, Harare magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti Guwuriro said the investigating officer and the State indicated that there was no sufficient evidence to build a case against her.

Kagonye was accused of defrauding Shingiriro Housing Cooperative of US$18 000 after she allegedly received money promising them residential stands.

A bookkeeper, who was supposed to testify during the trial is said to be outside the country and Guwuriro stated that the evidence of Joyce Chiroodza, the complainant, was not enough to sustain the allegations.

She also said the documents of the cooperative were also not enough.

The magistrate also noted that the other matters were withdrawn by the complainants who alleged that they were forced to report lies against the accused.

Kagonye was facing three counts of fraud and she was acquitted on two counts but the magistrate said she has a case to answer on the third count.

She had applied for discharge at the close of the State’s case but Guwuriro ruled Kagonye must be put to her defence.

On the third count, Kagonye is accused of taking 20 computers from the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ) for her constituency.

The magistrate ruled that Kagonye should reveal the location of the computers that were taken from POTRAZ.

She is also expected to tell the court who her brother, Evans Kagonye, gave the computers to and how many were received.

Police in Rusape on Sunday seized 304 bales of second-hand clothes that were stashed in a container belonging to suspected smugglers along the Harare-Mutare Road.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the driver deserted the truck after it was involved in an accident. He said:

On 27/03/22, police in Rusape recovered 304 bales of second-hand clothes, at the 172 km peg along Harare-Mutare Road.

The bales were in a container of a Man TGA 26 8 rigid truck which was deserted by the driver after it was involved in a road traffic accident with an Iveco bus.

Asst Comm Nyathi said investigations are underway.

Rwanda is set to recruit nearly 500 Zimbabwean teachers by September this year following a memorandum of understanding that was signed between both countries last year.

The MoU was signed after Rwanda’s leader, President Paul Kagame, told a delegation from Zimbabwe that Rwanda urgently needs “quality teachers”.

The agreement was reportedly drafted in two stages starting with a focus on the employment of Zimbabwean English and STEM teachers.

Speaking at the ongoing Zimbabwe-Rwanda Trade and Investment Conference in Harare, Rwanda Education Board (REB) Director-General Nelson Mbarushimana said:

On the MoU signed last year for an exchange of education personnel from Zimbabwe, we have so far started recruiting and we will have 477 teachers coming from Zimbabwe in September this year.

We have set up a recruitment committee specifically for this and the process is being done online.

He said the teachers would be placed in polytechnics and other higher learning institutions.

First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa said that the collapse of the manufacturing industry in the country and the high rate of unemployment were caused by sanctions and Zimbabweans should pray hard for their removal.

Zimbabwe has been under sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union since it expropriated farms from white farmers for redistribution to landless blacks in the early 2000s.

Addressing delegates at a drugs and gender sensitization conference for men drawn from Harare and Chitungwiza at the Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex on Tuesday, Mnangagwa said:

We are a developing country. We are under sanctions and then COVID-19 came and some companies closed because of the pandemic.

What wrong did we do for us to have sanctions? We need to pray hard for them to be removed to be able to have exports and credit lines. No one would want to invest in a nation under sanctions.

It’s just a matter of time. Let us keep on praying for our country. One day God will intervene.

Let us not hate our nation. Let us work for it. Let us find what we can do to take it forward.

If we continue using hate speech we will speak negatively in a positive country.

Mnangagwa used the conference to launch various economic empowerment initiatives to support women through her Angel of Hope Foundation.

She warned police officers against involvement in the selling of drugs and protecting drug lords.

Speaking at the conference, Chief Chikwaka, born Murambiwa Witness Bungu, castigated men who sexually abuse the girl child.

A 20-year-old woman was raped by an unidentified kombi driver and his conductor after she had boarded their vehicle on Sunday.

Posting on their Twitter page, police said the suspects gave their would-be victim a lift at 6 PM in a white kombi at Mbudzi Roundabout and proceeded to the Ushewokunze area in Harare where they took turns to rape her. Police said:

The ZRP is appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of a kombi driver and his conductor who gang-raped a 20-year-old woman in the Ushewokunze area, Harare, after giving her a lift at 1801hrs in a white kombi at Mbudzi Roundabout.

In an unrelated incident, a group of armed robbers consisting of 14 men and a woman stole US$40 000, ZWL$20 000, and a pistol among other items from a house in Chitungwiza. Police said:

The ZRP is investigating a robbery case that occurred in Chitungwiza where 14 unknown men and a woman, armed with machetes, knobkerries, and hammers pounced at a house in Manyame Park and assaulted the security guard who was on duty at the premises.

The suspects blasted the complainant’s bedroom window with dynamite and attacked the complainant, who was in bed with his wife, and demanded cash.

They stole US$40 000, Z$20 000, six cellphones, a pistol with an empty magazine, car keys for an Isuzu KB300, and a Honda Fit vehicle.

A Bishop with Zion Church in Bikita, Masvingo province was shamed after his secret love affair with a married woman that resulted in the birth of a child was exposed at a Community Court where he was fined five beasts after being found guilty of adultery.

Bishop Joel Musariri from Musariri Village was slapped with a five beast fine by Chief Mpakwa for bedding Admire Manganye’s wife, Tendai Muguraumwe.

B-Metro gathered that the love affair reportedly started in 2009 and went undetected for years and Tendai committed paternity fraud when she did not tell her husband that he was not the father to one of her four children.

It was not until some villagers, who were privy to the shenanigans between Tendai and the self-acclaimed man of God, revealed to Manganye that he was not the biological father to one of Tendai’s children.

When Manganye confronted his wife, she confessed that she had been donating the forbidden fruit to Musariri behind his back.

Manganye, who was reportedly not comfortable with the ugly development, then approached Chief Mpakwa’s traditional court suing Musariri for bedding his wife.

B-Metro also gathered that the two – Tendai and Musariri – were cleverly planning and having their sex romps several times in the bush without Manganye’s knowledge.

At Chief Mpakwa’s court, Tendai admitted that she was bedding Musariri leading to the birth of a child whose paternity she had concealed from her husband.

After both Tendai and Musariri confessed their illicit affair, Chief Mpakwa who apparently felt that it was unfair for Musariri to ‘force’ Manganye to look after his own flesh and blood for more than 10 years ordered him to pay five beasts as compensation.

Speaking to B-Metro Chief Mpakwa confirmed that he summoned Musariri and ordered him to pay five beasts after he found him guilty of impregnating Manganye’s wife.

He said this was also after Tendai confessed that Manganye was not the real father to one of her children.

“Manganye was disappointed and felt upset and betrayed. This was after he discovered that for years he had been looking after another man’s flesh and blood. As a Chief I felt that it was unfair for Musariri to order Manganye to bear full responsibility for a child who was not his and that’s why I ordered him to pay five beasts as compensation,” said Chief Mpakwa.

He said he totally rebuked Musariri’s act saying what he did as a man of God was against social customs, values and ethos.

3 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 stalks of celery, chopped

Directions / Instructions

Step 1

Place egg in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring water to a boil and immediately remove it from heat. Cover and let the egg stand in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water; cool for 5 minutes. Peel and chop into bite-sized pieces.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, mix together tuna and mayonnaise. Mix in egg, celery, relish, and black pepper.

Roasted beets with balsamic vinegar dressing.

Ingredients:

6 medium beets, trimmed and scrubbed
2 tablespoons aged balsamic vinegar
2 teaspoons real maple syrup
salt and ground black pepper to taste

Directions / Instructions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Wrap beets loosely in aluminium foil and place them on a rimmed baking sheet.

Step 2

Roast in the preheated oven until easily pierced with a knife or skewer, 50 to 60 minutes. Unwrap and cool until easily handled, about 10 minutes. Peel beets and cut them into chunks.

Step 3

Mix vinegar and maple syrup together; season with salt and pepper. Pour over beets. Refrigerate until beets absorb the flavours, at least 1 hour. Serve cold.

Ingredients:

– 12 ounces of dry fettuccini noodles
– 8 ounces of fresh asparagus, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces
– ½ cup of butter
– 2 cups heavy cream
– ¾ cup grated Parmesan cheese
– ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
– ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
– 1 pinch of cayenne pepper
– ½ pound cooked ham, diced

Directions / Instructions

Step 1

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente. Stir asparagus into pot in the last five minutes of cooking; drain.

Step 2

While pasta is cooking, heat butter and cream in a medium saucepan over medium heat. When the mixture begins to bubble, stir in Parmesan, garlic powder, pepper and cayenne. Continue cooking until the mixture thickens, stirring occasionally. Stir in ham and heat through.

Step 3

Toss pasta and asparagus with sauce and serve immediately.

When it comes to giving the women in his life gifts, Kanye West has an impressive go-to present: wildly expensive handbags. This time, the Donda artist pulled out all the stops when he gifted Chaney Jones — the woman he’s been seeing and packing on PDA within recent weeks — a very special Birkin bag.

A source tells ET that West “purchased an extremely rare version of the Birkin bag for Chaney Jones for $275,000 from Privé Porter.

The bag is silver metallic Chèvre leather with palladium hardware and was delivered to Jones in Houston, Texas on Tuesday night, according to the source, who adds, “Kanye watched as Chaney received the bag via FaceTime.

Michelle Berk, CEO of Privé Porter tells ET, “This is a very limited production bag that was only made in 2004. Other notable owners of this bag are Jeffree Star, who purchased from me, and Bella Hadid. It’s one of the most famous and sought after Birkins in the world.

“The demand is because of the beauty and uniqueness of the bag… as well as the limited production numbers,” Berk stated. “This bag has sold for as high as $300,000. Kanye’s team was adamant that they only wanted this bag, no substitutions. The timing was uncanny as we had just added it to our Metaverse Fashion Week ANFT collection, a huge innovation in luxury ownership and authenticity, and she ended up being the first person to have something of this nature.”

Jeffrey Berk, Managing Director of Privé Porter, tells ET, “I flew to Houston and delivered it myself, as the unit was so valuable and they wanted it that same day.” Berk added that Jones had frequently mentioned the bag to Kanye, and that her “joy was genuine” as she FaceTimed with West.

The 44-year-old rapper has been spending time with the 24-year-old model in recent weeks. They attended a Lakers game earlier this month, hit up Nobu in Malibu in February and recently spent time together in Miami. A source told ET last month, “Kanye and Chaney are seeing each other and having fun. It’s by no means a serious relationship. She’s having fun hanging out with him and enjoying all the cool things they’re doing together
This also isn’t the first time West has given out Birkin bags as gifts for his girlfriend. In early February, West bought baby Hermès Birkin purses for his ex-girlfriend Julia Fox and several of her pals as a birthday gift.

The later former President Robert Mugabe’s son, Robert Mugabe Jnr, is set to contest for a leadership position in the Zanu PF youth league at its national conference to be held in May.

Zanu PF sources told the publication, Robert Jnr is contemplating throwing his hat in the ring at the party youth league’s 7th national conference to run between May 4 and 8.

Zanu PF acting deputy secretary for youth Tendai Chirau was evasive when asked whether Robert Jnr would be eligible to stand.

“We will only know people who are interested after submission of CVs (curriculum vitae) which is done at DCC (district coordinating committee) and provincial levels. We haven’t yet received them. I wouldn’t know if he (Robert Jnr) is interested because it’s just like you have just finished ‘A’ Levels and you say you want to go to university when results are not yet out,” Chirau told NewZimbabwe.com Thursday.

However, sources within the party confirmed the late former president’s eldest son wants a bite of the cherry.

“Robert Jnr will be contesting for a post within the Youth League, which holds its elective conference beginning of May. He is laying the foundation for a fully-fledged political career in a bid to fill his father’s shoes.”

It is not clear, yet which position Robert Jnr is targeting, but sources say with Chirau now well above the constitutionally acknowledged youth bracket, he may as well be up for the ultimate prize.

The 30-year-old is rumoured to be eyeing a parliamentary seat in his home area of Zvimba West currently held by Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi.

Last week, he attended President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s star rally in Chitungwiza where he declared allegiance to Zanu PF, a party his late father helped found.

Robert Jnr later sat on the high table along with top government officials.

He was quoted saying: “I thought I should come and support the party. Like it’s a family tradition. Since I was born, the only thing I knew is Zanu PF. I am a Zanu PF child, and I have a Zanu PF soul. It is only right that I continue the legacy.”

In welcoming Robert Jnr, Zanu PF spokesperson, Chris Mutsvangwa said his presence would inspire young people to join the former revolutionary party.

Robert Junior was at one time named number four among Zimbabwe’s most influential young people in a survey conducted by the Zimbabwe Research Institute (ZRI).

Sources told NewZimbabwe.com, Robert Jnr, and Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga’s son, Irvine, who was controversially drafted into Mashonaland West Provincial Youth League Executive last December, could spark protest at the upcoming conference as the eligibility criteria could be twisted to suit the pair.

Both have allegedly not served at district level for the required number of years.

According to a leaked Zanu PF memo, candidates have to be below 35 years old, registered voters, fully paid-up members who have served at least five years at district level, and without criminal records.

The league’s conference will see the election of a successor to Chirau, who confirmed he will not be seeking re-election as he was above the 35-years threshold.

The event would also be in preparation for October’s elective congress at which Mnangagwa expects endorsement as the party’s sole candidate for the 2023 presidential elections.
