KwaZulu-Natal nurse died after she was stabbed by boyfriend

SA recorded another shocking case of gender-based violence this week: a 35-year-old KwaZulu-Natal nurse died after she was stabbed and her throat slit — allegedly by her boyfriend.

On Saturday, KwaZulu-Natal social development MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza said Nomkhosi Zungu, from Esikhaleni township on the north coast, died on Wednesday.

“Nomkhosi Zungu, 35, was stabbed and had her throat slit on Wednesday after she returned from her shift at The Bay Hospital,” she said.

It is alleged Zungu was murdered by her boyfriend, who she shared a house with in Esikhaleni. The boyfriend allegedly called the deceased’s sister to inform her he was going to kill Zungu and take his life.”

Khoza conveyed her condolences to Zungu’s family and her colleagues. She described Zungu’s murder as devastating and urged society to protect women.

“We condemn Zungu’s murder in the strongest terms and we want to appeal to anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the alleged killer to contact the police.”

Khoza lamented that the “province continued experiencing such atrocities perpetrated against innocent and defenceless women”.

“It is very hard to comprehend what leads to this kind of violence in communities. How can a person murder the very same woman that he claims to love?

“It is hurting and disturbing to hear about the killings of women and children daily in this province.”

The MEC organised counselling for Zungu’s family and her colleagues. She urged “women to quickly leave toxic relationships and protect themselves from heartless killers”.

“We have been running a lot of campaigns as the department to equip our children on how to identify or avoid toxic relationships. As families, we also need to play a role in helping our children to escape from these toxic relationships,”

The clampdown on vandalism has continued with four men being jailed for a combined 27 years for possession of copper.

The four men, Frighton Moyo, Munyaradzi Maherani, Tafadzwa Matsongabere, and Luckmore Honde were given varying sentences by Bindura Regional Magistrate Eneresi Chivasa, after being found guilty of contravening the Electricity Act.

Moyo was sentenced to nine years as he had a previous conviction for dealing in copper. Maherani and Matsongabere will serve five years each while Honde was sentenced to eight years in prison.

Prosecutor Carson Kundiwona told the court that on September 7, a crack team of officers from the police and the President’s Office obtained information that three men at Wayerera village in Chief Masembura’s area of Bindura were transporting ZESA copper cables.

The team reacted and caught up with the accused at a police roadblock in Chinhamora and arrested them, recovering 32 meters of burnt copper wire weighing 48 kilograms. Upon questioning, the three implicated the fourth accused Luckmore Honde as the seller of the copper, leading to his arrest.

Only last week six men were sentenced to an effective 60 years in prison for theft and vandalism of national infrastructure.

Villagers living in fear after being threatened by Zanu PF officials

Villagers in the Hurungwe district of Mashonaland West province are living in fear after being threatened with violence if they voted for the opposition in the 2023 elections or failed to contribute financially to the ruling party coffers.

Reports indicate that Zanu-PF chairperson Chibwe Muchena and party women’s league chair Bibiana Mandigora on Saturday told a meeting convened by the party leadership that anyone who votes for the opposition in the 2023 general elections would face torture, worse than what happened after the 2008 presidential runoff.

“It was on 3 September when we were forced to attend a Zanu-PF meeting at Reza under headman Chahwanda in Kazangare,” said a source.

“The two leaders, Muchena and Mandigora claimed that there was an upcoming project spearheaded by President [Emmerson] Mnangagwa whereby each person who will vote in the 2023 election should pay US$2 for passport size photos and should vote for Zanu-PF.

They said these photos would be submitted to President Mnangagwa and he would see who you would have voted for. The two leaders said anyone who would not pay the US$2 and submit the passport size photos would be regarded as an enemy and would be in soup.”

Another source said: “As we speak, some villagers have already paid these monies and another top-up of one dollar is said to be going towards Mandigora’s food.”

Other villagers who attended the meeting confirmed the alleged threats.

“We were there and this was said,” said another villager who requested not to be named.

Contacted for comment, Muchena denied the accusations saying there was no such programme in the area.

“Whoever told you this is lying. I know nothing about such a programme and I did not say anything that you are telling me. What I only told gatherers is they should submit passport size photos and fill forms so that they apply for loans from Women’s Empowerment Bank.

On the issue of intimidating villagers as the country braces for 2023 elections, Muchena said: “Whoever is spreading that information is spreading falsehoods. People should come on the ground and not share fake news to villagers. There is nowhere I mentioned about beating those who will not vote for Zanu-PF, this is just malice meant to tarnish my name and the party name,” she added.

A Lativian citizen was intercepted at the Robert Mugabe International Airport for smuggling heroine worth over ZW$6 million.

Vitalis Kudrjasovs (27) appeared before Harare Magistrate Taurai Manuwere and was remanded in custody to September 15 while the State is seeking an interpreter.

The court heard that on September 8, detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics, Harare received a tip off from a source that Kudrjasovs was in possession of the illegal substance heroin which he intended to smuggle to India.

A trap was set where the detectives waited for the Lativian to check into the airport.

He was allegedly carrying a black travelling bag and a small black bag.

The unsuspecting criminal went through all the check-in, immigration and customs formalities to board an Ethiopian Airlines enroute to India.

Kudrjasovs bags were scanned and suspicious contents were detected in it.

He was then called to the scanning point where searches were carried out in his presence.

Heroin was discovered hidden on the bottom side of the bag.

The contraband was air tightly wrapped with four brown adhesive tapes packed in a transparent polythene pack.

He was arrested and it was established that he had a Lativian passport bearing an air ticket to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia enroute to India on an Ethiopian airline.

The heroin underwent a field test and tested positive for Opium or heroin.

The dangerous drug was also weighed and was an estimated 8,7 kgs which is estimated to be at a value of ZW$6 960 000.

Zimbabwe’s new marriage law give girlfriends inheritance rights

$
0
0

Zimbabwe has ushered in a new marriage law that gives equal rights to “girlfriends” and women in registered unions upon the dissolution of a marriage or death of the husband.

Marriage Act (Chapter 5:15) was signed May 27 and took effect at the end of August.

“The most notable changes in the new law are the recognition of civil and customary law marriage as the same. As under customary law marriages, parties were not considered to be married at law,” Rumbidzai Venge, a lawyer based in the nation’s capital of Harare, told Anadolu Agency.

“Upon the death of a husband or dissolution of the marriage, very little could be experienced in terms of property rights, particularly by women who were disenfranchised in a lot of these unions,” he said.

Unlike in the past, the new law recognizes civil partnerships, which are not marriages but are recognized only for property sharing.

A civil partnership is a relationship between a man and woman older than the age of 18 who live together on a genuine domestic basis. The union can co-exist with any other marriage, including a civil union.

“So, when the relationship is terminated, any one of these two can use the civil partnership provision, to get protection which is also accorded to married people that are divorcing,” Abigail Matsvayi, director of the Zimbabwe Women Lawyers Association, told the Turkish news agency. “A Matrimonial Causes Act will be used to determine the dissolution of the relationship, and how property is shared.”

The use of the Matrimonial Causes Act was not possible for any marriage apart from civil marriage in the past.

Judith Kavu, a member of the Zimbabwe Widows, Widowers and Orphans Association, told Anadolu Agenct that she was happy with the new law.

“As an organization that deals with victims of unregistered marriages in most cases, we welcome this new law as it is progressive as it is in line with the principle of equality stated in the Constitution and our laws,” said Kavu.

Legal implications

The new law has brought a radical change to marriage laws in Zimbabwe with the Marriage Act (Chapter 5:11) and Customary Marriages Act (Chapter 5:07) being repealed.

Civil marriages under the Marriage Act were considered superior and handled differently upon divorce. But now all marriages are treated equally, giving Zimbabweans in other marriages more rights to inherit property.

“In terms of inheritance, it just means that those in a civil partnership are now on equal footing with other marriage regimes upon the dissolution of their marriages. There is concern out there that the new law is now giving rights to ‘girlfriends’ but in Zimbabwe, 80% of unions are not registered and most women are in unions where they are having kids but still being regarded as girlfriends,” legal analyst Zoro Nkomo told Anadolu Agency.

“Most women in Zimbabwe have not had their lobola, or bride price, paid, yet they have built homes and acquired properties with their husbands, and often the wives and even children sired out of these unions are left out of the inheritance. This is what this new law seeks to resolve,” added Zoro.

Victims of old marriage laws

Spencer Rupiya, is a 22-year-old orphan struggling to get the rights to his parents’ house in Harare.

He became homeless at 15 when his father died. His relatives argued that his father was not legally married to his mother because her lobola was not paid.

“I could not believe their claim because my mother used to tell us how she and dad saved money to build the house. But all my efforts have not produced any results, so far,” Spencer told Anadolu Agency as he celebrated the new law.

Kavu’s organization is dealing with similar challenges as Spencer is facing owing to gaps created by old marriage laws.

“We have been dealing with widows who are losing properties, vehicles and even savings just because they are considered girlfriends in the absence of lobola.

The “unregistered unions have always been there but there were no laws to empower widows and even orphans from such unions,” she said.

“Most of these widows are old and freak and can’t prove they were married, so the new marriage law is giving such powerless, so-called ‘girlfriends’ in the eyes of the in-laws, the right to inherit,” said Zoro.

Apart from recognizing all marriages, the new law outlaws child marriages by setting a minimum age of 18 for marriages and criminalizes anyone involved in child marriage.

Rapper Priddy Ugly and Mapaputsi are allegedly related

$

Mzansi rapper, Ricardo “Priddy Ugly” Moloi has made major moves in 2022. Moves which have seen him shine outside of the shadow of his wife and fellow media personality, Bontle (Modiselle) Moloi. A fact which has allowed for us to learn more interesting details about him. One fun fact is that he is related to Kwaito legend Mapaputsi.

During the height of the lockdown, many media personalities resorted to YouTube to maintain their social popularity. One of the most successful YouTube channels to have come out during this time was Ha Moloi. The YouTube channel focussed on the lives of married couple and first parents, Priddy Ugly and Bontle, with their then-infant daughter Afrika Moloi.

However, as the world returned to its “new normal” lockdown restrictions and regulations were relaxed and subsequently all but forgotten. The Molois got seemingly so busy that the YouTube channel took a back burner. However, the Molois seemed to have recognized or missed releasing content as they took to YouTube recently to affirm that they are back with their first video in over a year since they had last posted one via their channel.

Granted, the video has not made the same numbers as their previous videos as it has yet to break the 100 000 views mark, a week since its premiere. But the video does affirm what a healthy-looking married couple looks like as Priddy Ugly and Bontle remain couple goals.

Besides the return to YouTube, Priddy Ugly has a Hip-Hop album, Mud, which is beloved by Hip-Hop heads as one of the best albums for the genre released so far this year. Moreover, he has earned some attention as the upcoming contender set to take the ring with Cassper Nyovest on Friday, 1 October 2022 during the much anticipated second Celebrity Boxing Match event against Cassper Nyovest.

As such, more and more details about the rapper’s personal life are being revealed. One recent reveal that will come as a shock to many is that Priddy Ugly is related to Mapaputsi. A fact which was revealed when a tweep took to Twitter to suggest that Priddy’s father was the Kwaito legend. However, Priddy Ugly made sure to clear the confusion when he affirmed their relation, but corrected that Mapaputsi was his brother-in-law and not his father.

Mapaputsi in recent years was not the talk of the town like most Kwaito legends as the current music space is dominated by young Amapiano artists. However, following his interview on MacG’ Podcast and Chill, it seems that his career was revived as publicly his career has garnered more and more attention since his interview which currently sits just under 500 000 views in four months.

The same can be said about a number of celebrities that were somewhat forgotten legends of the 2000s and 2010s. The most recent being Innocent Masuku, best known for his role as Bobo, who following his interview on Podcast and Chill has since created an official Twitter account.

Mampintsha comes to Babes Wodumo’s defence

Mzansi musical artist, Mampintsha was left fuming after trolls body-shamed his wife, Babes Wodumo. A recent picture of Babes not looking like she used to a few years ago, got her trolled by internet users.

This is nothing new, as various pictures of Babes sent trolls into a frenzy and eventually, a trolling parade started.

She was a guest at KZN’s leading radio station, Ukhozi FM, and wore a brown blazer, brown skirt and a cream white polo neck with brown boots. She had a simple hairdo but it was her overall appearance that threw trolls off.

One put a picture of her a few years back and that recent one side by side and the hate just kept on coming.

Not letting the hate get out of hand anymore, her husband Mampintsha took to Instagram and penned a heated message to those haters.

He called them broke and hungry and even offered to hire them so they can get money for themselves.

“It hurts so bad because the people who swear at us are people we do not know. No rich person goes around swearing at other rich people. It’s always those who are hungry that are jealous and practice witchcraft. Whereas they should be using that energy to ask for jobs and I would hire them so they can get money, get laid and stop being angry.

“But they rather spew bile. Listen here, leave us alone. Or I will gladly return you all back to your mother’s wombs, one by one. Our names are not for your entertainment. You guys are very hungry. I’m sorry to my fans, I am very tired of these haters that don’t bath,” he concluded.

The couples reality show Uthando Lodumo returned for a second season and fans got a taste of what the couple has been up to these past few months.

What remains of public interest is the feud between her and her mother I law Zama Gumede.

The two fought publicly and Babes acknowledged that she was wrong for handling the situation the way she did as well.

“I was also wrong. I did all that because I was hurting inside…I’m very heartbroken Not being accepted by my in-laws is painful. Other girls are loved by their mothers-in-law they embrace them. Mine has never embraced me. Instead, I was greeted with a video riddled with profanities,” she said.

Zama on the other hand said she and Babes are not friends and so she must pay damages.

“I was really annoyed. I felt disrespected. You’re my only son and I’m your mother. I deserve to be respected.

“I’m not her friend. I’m her mother-in-law. It would’ve been better if she had sworn at me over the phone instead of on social media. She was out of hand.”

“She needs to pay damages, For the profanities, she needs to pay,” she concluded.

Bianca Naidoo, the partner of late South African rapper Riky Ricky recently celebrated her 40th birthday. Toll Ass Mo’s wife Ms Mome shared some moments from Bianca’s special day beside Riky’s mother and siblings.

In a recent interview with SABC News, Bianca opened up about how she has been coping with the loss of her partner and father of her kids.

Naidoo revealed that some days are easier while some aren’t, however, her support structure and most importantly their kids, have kept her going.

Bianca Naidoo

“Some days are easier than others. I manage with such an amazing support structure around me, and the kids also give me a lot of strength. The days when I’m not okay, I allow myself to be not okay.” she started off.

She says she has been open with their kids about their dad’s passing from the beginning.

“I was very open from the beginning, from day one, about what happened to dad. I talk a lot with children, I listen a lot. Now they are comfortable expressing themselves and they both process in their own way. They know that if they have questions, they can come and ask and talk about it, and I think they’re both there. It’s just a matter of me being honest.”

Bianca Naidoo

Bianca notes that two most difficult days have been Riky’s birthday and Father’s Day and Ricky’s birthday.

“Last Sunday we talked for about five hours. The most beautiful conversation about everything, just life, us, the kids, how he felt… just everything. This conversation gave me a lot of peace because in this conversation any questions and doubts were expressed.

“I also spoke to Ricky early in the morning. I never thought or felt… because his last words in that conversation were, ‘I’m going home’ and ‘I love you,'”

Bianca Naidoo

She concluded that she wants Riky to know that he is loved and missed, “He knew how much we loved him. I think that was very clear. I would say it over and over again. I think that is right, we just really miss him.”

Sunday World reported that Bianca has been fighting for the ownership of Riky Rick’s estate as the couple were never married legally but had plans to wed.

“Our common intention together with the deceased was to validate our marriage in accordance with civil law. As already stated above, although our families with the deceased are not traditional, they did meet during the course of our relationship to have marriage discussions and our families did approve of our relationship as that of husband and wife.”

Bianca Naidoo

“Furthermore, as already stated above, the deceased and I did intend to eventually marry, however, the deceased unfortunately passed before the solemnization of our marriage became a reality, albeit we lived our joint lives as a married couple. I have therefore been advised that I do qualify within the category of a partner ‘in a permanent life partnership in which the partners have undertaken reciprocal duties of support’,” read the papers.
