War vets slam bread price hike

THE Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) has condemned the unjustified increase in the prices of basic commodities and called on responsible authorities to take urgent measures to protect citizens.

In a statement, ZNLWVA national spokesperson Cde Douglas Mahiya said the increase in bread price was a calculated move meant to dampen the independence celebrations and incite the public to revolt against the Government.

“The ZNLWVA notes with utter disgust the malevolent bread price increase by bakeries,” he said. “This cruel assault on the welfare of the poor and less privileged is an attempt to copy-cat the template of national disturbances that were witnessed in the Arab world.

“The unjustified bread price increase is clearly a political weapon by the baking cartel. This is clearly a calculated move meant to anger the public and make them to revolt against the constitutionally elected Government.

“The move is also meant to sabotage President Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030 and as war veterans we will stand to defend the economic programmes by our President.

“We strongly condemn this profiteering habit by bakers and we urge them to desist from the habit of making unjustified profits at the expense of the poor.”

Cde Mahiya said ZNLWVA will stand with the people and make sure the unjustified profiteering will not succeed.

“We will make sure this cartel bites the dust,” he said. “This is to ensure that the Zimbabwe revolution we fought heroically as young people thrives and succeeds. The Vision 2030 and goal of a middle income economy will be pursued with unremitting vigour.”

Cde Mahiya called on Government to take measures which ensured that citizens were protected.

“We call upon the Ministers of Industry, Finance and Justice to take drastic and decisive measures to deal with these cartels. All initiatives must be put in place to ensure that all basics are affordable to everyone,” he said.

Cde Mahiya said the spirit of independence celebrations should not be dampened by bad apples in the economic body system.

Begining last week, a loaf of bread is being sold for $3,50. up from $2.

Zimbabwe will rise again

Zimbabwe is on a path to rebuild its economy and through greater social cohesion and unity, the country shall rise again, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said.

The country’s future depended on national engagement and openness as well as the ability by Zimbabweans to push national interest ahead of egotism, he said.

Economic commentators and political analysts yesterday buttressed President Mnangagwa’s sentiments saying although enormous challenges confront the economy, they were surmountable.

Addressing thousands of people at the 39th Independence celebrations in Harare on Thursday, President Mnangagwa said the future was bright.

“As we celebrate our independence, our land and our people, we look forward to a future of engagement and openness; reform and modernisation; innovation and education.

“As a listening President, my ear will remain attentive to all Zimbabweans as we join hands for greater social cohesion and unity. We must always put the nation ahead of self-interest, as we recommit ourselves to a legacy of peace, love, unity, harmony and development.

“Together, we are building a new economy and a new future. Zimbabwe shall rise again.”

President Mnangagwa said despite enduring years of difficulties, this country and its people had survived and never lost hope.

Therefore, in celebrating 39 years of freedom, it was paramount to self-introspect on the honouring of national values.

“Let us instead seek to blossom, thrive and prosper as a nation, as a people, towards a brighter future in the Zimbabwe we all want.”

Political analyst Mr Godwine Mureriwa said President Mnangagwa’s optimism of a brighter future was driven by a clear understanding of the direction his administration was taking.

“The challenges Zimbabwe faces today are indeed enormous, but certainly not insurmountable. We need to be united, peaceful and hardworking in all our endeavours. This is the only way to bust sanctions imposed on us by our former colonisers and detractors. We are resourced enough to unlock the potential in agriculture, mining and tourism.”

Mr Mureriwa said the country’s future was bright on the back of the current efforts to create a conducive atmosphere for local and foreign investment, infrastructural development and support to the manufacturing sector.

University of Zimbabwe Department of Economics chairperson Professor Albert Makochekanwa said President Mnangagwa needed to ensure that all the policy measures being introduced by Government are implemented.

“Government needs to go a step further like what the President said. Let us not end on measures, but we want implementation of those measures and arms of Government that are supposed to implement them must play their part.

“In the past we have always been told about new measures being introduced and the ample potential that Zimbabwe has, but not much has improved.

“It is good that the President says that Zimbabwe is on the path to recovery, but there is need to go further and see the implementation of those measures.”

President Mnangagwa said collective efforts between citizens at home and abroad was paramount for the nation to prosper.

While foreign friends and investors were helping rebuild Zimbabwe’s economy, the ultimate obligation to turn around the country’s future rested within the general citizenry.

On its part Government would continue to engage a wide spectrum of stakeholders on socio-economic and political issues.

“I am aware that a notable part of our citizens are currently spread across the Diaspora. “The raft of reforms we have started should enable some of them to return home and assist in building our nation.

“As a listening President, my ear will remain attentive to all Zimbabweans as we join hands for greater social cohesion and unity.

“I commend the progressive-minded leaders of political parties, who are part of the National Political Parties Dialogue.”

He said this was the hallmark of mature, responsible and patriotic leadership, which puts national interests ahead of selfish ambition.

“The platform will enable us to have conversations that will help us to develop our country.”

President Mnangagwa reiterated that Zimbabwe’s freedom was born out a liberation struggle whose main driving force was repossession of land.

In that regard, his administration would never reverse the land reform programme.

Furthermore, value addition and beneficiation of local products would bring huge benefits that would easily uplift the livelihoods of the people.

Mr Mureriwa added that productivity and prosperity were collective responsibilities of every Zimbabwean regardless of political and other differences.

The past few weeks have seen prices skyrocket but the President said unity and social cohesion would create the right environment for consultation and progressive action.

He registered his Government’s determination to play its part in inducing better standards of living for all Zimbabweans.

A special envoy from Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza yesterday paid a courtesy call on President Mnangagwa at his Munhumutapa Offices in Harare seeking support for admission into Sadc.

The special envoy, Burundi’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Ezechiel Mbigira, described Zimbabwe as a sister country with a rich history.

“Zimbabwe is a country that has a long history, a very good and encouraging history,” he said.

“As the special envoy of President Pierre Nkurunziza, I have come here to continue strengthening relations between Burundi and Zimbabwe because Zimbabwe is a sister country. It’s a country with which we have a common history and a common future that’s why we need to relate with this country in a very special way.”

He added that he hoped his country’s application to join Sadc would be successful and called on Zimbabwe to support its bid.

“As you know, Burundi has applied to become a member of Sadc and the process of dealing with our application is going on very well,” he said.

“We believe that after the assessment mission that is coming to Burundi towards the end of May, the decision will be of course, taken for Burundi to become a member of Sadc.

“As Zimbabwe is our sister country, we believe that Zimbabwe will continue to support Burundi to become a member of Sadc.”

Ambassador Mbigira said his country had a lot to offer to Sadc if its application is successful.

Zimbabwe suspends printing of passports due to system malfunction

The Zimbabwe Registrar General, Mr Clement Masango is evasive on when his office will resume the printing of passports as he argues that there is a system malfunction and he cannot tell when the problem will be resolved.

Masango said the current problem was still ongoing Thursday afternoon. He said since Wednesday night, nothing has changed.

“I released a notice statement on ZTV in the evening revealing that we have encountered a system malfunction, that is affecting us, engineers are working on it so I don’t have any timeframe, it is very difficult to say and I am not an engineer.”

The Registrar General’s office is grappling with the shortages of special paper needed in the processing of passports due to the foreign currency crunch.
Masango said the shortages of passport paper were so bad that his office had resorted to screening even those who wanted to pay top dollar for an emergency passport.

“We have two types of urgent passports – one which can be availed within 24 hours and costs $318, and another, which can be issued within three working days and costs $250, and then a category which can be availed within four weeks ($53), but is affected because currently we are unable to avail them within four weeks due to lack of consumables like ink, passport paper and others, which need foreign currency to be imported,” Masango told parliament in February.

The passport office has a backlog of nearly 200 000 applications.

Masango said they have been forced to scale down the processing of emergency and urgent passports to avoid completely running out of paper.

His office is now issuing 500 emergency passports per day.

Zimra Investigating officer allegedly poisoned to death

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) investigating officer Charles Mwarira, who was supposed to be a key witness in an ongoing smuggling scandal at the Beitbridge border post was poisoned to death last week, the Zim Morning Post has learnt.
This comes on the backdrop of reports by this publication that Zimra is losing millions of dollars to a smuggling syndicate at Beitbridge border post, which implicates Zimra and the Zimbabwe Republic Police officers.
Sources close to the development said Mwarira is said to have been poisoned together with his cousin brother.

“Mwarira was poisoned. Before he died he mentioned that he was given some milk which he consumed together with his cousin who also died,” said the source.
We are not sure who gave him the milk but all we know is that he was a state witness in a smuggling case.”

Sources said Mwarira was buried yesterday (Wednesday) in Rusape.
Zimra boss Faith Mazani confirmed that an official died, however she insisted that the late (Mwarira) was in the administration department.

“The person who died was in the administration and had nothing to do with investigations. I am appealing to the media to respect the grieving family,” she said.

As reported earlier on by this publication, smugglers are working in cahoots with border officials and money is exchanging hands.

When the Zim Morning Post team arrived at the border two weeks ago traders were paying between R800 to smuggle a fridge to Harare without paying duty. The money caters for the transportation of the gadgets, bribing the Zimra and ZRP officers and also to paying the middle men.

Zim Morning Post following a lead on alleged smuggling of goods by transport operators popularly known as malayitsha learnt that border officials are working hand in glove with the smugglers who are making a killing at the border post.

The business of smuggling has become very lucrative among Zimbabweans resulting in them buying cars to ease the conduct of their business.

The observation by this publication in Musina showed that Zimbabwe registered vehicles dominate the town more than the South African registered vehicles.

According to Statutory Instrument (SI) Number 252A of 2018, goods pay import duty of between 15% to 60% whilst except ICT gadgets which are exempted from paying duty.

However the syndicate between ZIMRA workers and smugglers is not paying any import duty and the number of people in this business is increasing rapidly

$4 million drums of bitumen Stolen

$

At least 215 drums of bitumen worth RTGS$4 million were stolen at a road construction site in Chivhu last week and Government has rolled out extensive investigations to apprehend the culprits
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Joel Biggie Matiza confirmed that the bitumen which was meant for the dualisation of a 10-kilometre stretch along Harare-Beitbridge highway went missing under mysterious circumstances.

Minister Matiza told The Herald yesterday that the manner in which the bitumen disappeared had footprints of an inside job by some officials from the Department of Roads.
He pointed out that thefts of a similar nature had also occurred in the past in Hwedza and Gweru, pointing to a coordinated racket that might be involving connivance between Department of Roads and the suppliers.

“I can confirm that 215 drums of bitumen worth RTGS$4 million were stolen in Chivhu last week,” Minister Matiza said.

“The bitumen was part of a consignment meant to tar the 10km stretch which is part of the dualisation of the Harare-Beitbridge highway being undertaken by the Ministry in Chivhu
The manner in which the bitumen disappeared pointed to an organised gang of rogue workers bent on defrauding the Government. We are going to take stringent measures to decimate such racketeering and mafia activities.

joel-biggie-matiza

“The new dispensation inherited a system that was infested with warlords and safe havens meant to derail Government programmes through syphoning of resources meant for development.”

In a hard line stance against corruption, Minister Matiza said he was instituting an audit into the procurement and hiring of road equipment.

Further, he said the ministry would also adopt tracking systems for all hired equipment as part of measures designed to curb corruption in road construction projects.

“This move is going to curtail the inflation of machine hours and reduce human error or wilful manipulation through writing fictitious hours where in some cases the machinery would not have been used,” said Minister Matiza.

“All hired machinery will be fitted with tracking devices that will give print outs of hours worked.

“A lot of corrupt activities have been happening in road construction projects and the Chivhu incident is just a tip of an iceberg. As a ministry and Government, we are not going to leave any stone unturned in flushing out all the corrupt elements.

“It is disheartening to note that the dualisation of the Harare-Beitbridge road took long to start and now that Government has commenced work in line with the President’s Vision 2030, some callous elements bent on lining their pockets are disrupting progress.

“I want to assure the nation that we are going to do everything that works on that road will be completed with our set time limits despite these setbacks by enemies of development and progress.”

Minister Matiza also confirmed that police are also investigating the matter.

Former world boxing champion Charles Manyuchi is itching for a comeback as he prepares for the Intercontinental Unification title fight against Argentine boxer Pablo Ezequiel Acosta set for May 25 in Harare.

The event which has been dubbed “Restoration” fight will be launched at the tournament venue – Harare International Conference Centre – today.
Manyuchi, who has quietly been dealing with the grief of losing the World Boxing Council silver welter-weight title to Qudratillo Abduqaxorov of Uzbekistan two years ago, is feeling enthused by the upcoming fight which could see him claiming two belts on the night in a winner-take-all affair.

“We have called it Restoration because this is supposed to be my comeback fight. Honestly I am still studying to know much about my opponent but this is a fight which will probably decide which direction my career will take. I think I still have three or four more years to show what I am made of and what I am aiming for at the moment is just to come back and then see where this will take me. Obviously, it needs support from all Zimbabweans.

“It’s a chance for me and I have gladly accepted this challenge. I keep extending my appeal to Government and the corporate world to support such events like they have always done.
“I am excited by the launch set for today and this will mark the beginning of the final countdown of my preparations,” said Manyuchi.

A total of 11 bouts will take place on the night, three of them title fights. The event will also feature boxers from the Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy, who are behind the promotion of the event, and a host of local and Zambian pugilists.

The tournament has been sanctioned by the Zimbabwe National Boxing Control Board. Some of the highlights of the Africa Day tournament include the Universal Boxing Council title fight between Hassan Milanzi and Zambian Phillimon Hara and the Women’s International Boxing Association title bout featuring Kudakwashe Chiwandire and Joyce Chileshe.

Choose a fairly soft, but not raw, chorizo sausage for this winter vegetable soup if you can. Feel free to use any fresh winter root vegetables and cabbage that you have.

Ingredients
2 tbsp sunflower oil
1 onion, finely sliced
3 garlic cloves, finely sliced
2 carrots, cut into 1.5cm/¾in chunks
2 turnips, cut into 1.5cm/¾in chunks
1 large potato (preferably Maris Piper), cut into 1.5cm/¾in chunks
1 large parsnip, cut into 1.5cm/¾in chunks
2 heaped tsp paprika (sweet), plus extra to serve
1 heaped tsp hot smoked paprika
1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes
1 tbsp tomato purée
125g/4½oz chorizo sausage (we like picante), skinned and cut into 5mm slices

100g/3½oz Puy lentils, rinsed and drained
1.75 litres/3 pints stock, made with 1 chicken stock cube
100g/3½oz cavolo nero, kale or spring greens, tough midribs removed, shredded into 2cm/¾in pieces
flaked sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
soured cream or crème fraîche, to taste.

Method
Heat the oil in a large non-stick saucepan or large flame-proof casserole and fry the onion and garlic gently for 5 minutes, or until softened but not coloured, stirring occasionally. While the onion is frying, cut the carrots, turnips, potatoes and parsnip into roughly 1.5cm/¾in chunks.

Add the root vegetables to the pan with the onion and garlic and cook over a low heat for 5 minutes, or until beginning to soften, stirring occasionally. Stir in both the sweet and smoked paprika and fry for a few minutes. Add the tomatoes and the tomato purée into the pan, increase the heat a little and cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring regularly.

Add the chorizo, Puy lentils and the stock into the pan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer gently for 45 minutes, or until the vegetables and lentils are tender, stirring every now and then.

Add the cavolo nero, kale or spring greens to the pan with the vegetables. Cook for 5 minutes or until softened, stirring regularly.

Season the soup with salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Serve in deep bowls, with a dollop of soured cream or crème fraîche and a sprinkling of paprika.

Baked macaroni with meatballs – RECIPE

Baked macaroni with meatballs
Ingredients
For the cheese sauce
1 litre/1 pint 15fl oz whole milk
2 bay leaves
40g/1½oz unsalted butter
50g/2oz plain flour
250g/10½oz mature cheddar or gruyere, grated
1 tsp English mustard
salt and freshly ground black pepper
For the meatballs

2 tbsp olive oil
½ onion, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed
1 tsp dried oregano
250g/10½oz minced rump steak
For the pasta
1 tbsp olive oil
4 shallots, sliced
400g/14oz macaroni, cooked according to packet instructions
20 cherry tomatoes, halved
12 sun-blushed tomatoes
1 tsp dried oregano
2-3 tbsp milk, if needed
2 tbsp grated parmesan

Method
Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.

For the cheese sauce, place the milk and bay leaves into a pan and place over a medium heat. Heat the milk to scalding point (do not boil) and then remove from heat. Leave to infuse.

In a clean saucepan, melt the butter over a medium heat, then stir in the flour and cook for three minutes. Be careful not to let the mixture turn brown.

Remove the bay leaves from the milk mixture and add a little milk to the flour and butter mixture. Stir to combine the milk and flour paste over a low heat, then repeat the process, gradually adding milk and stirring in, until a smooth paste is formed.

Add the rest of the milk and bring to boil, stirring all the time, then reduce the heat and simmer for three minutes.

Remove the pan from the heat and add the cheese, mustard and season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

For the meatballs, heat one tablespoon of the oil in a saucepan over a medium heat. Add the onion, garlic and oregano and fry until softened, then remove from heat and allow to cool.

Place the onion mixture into a bowl and add the minced meat. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper, and mix together to combine.

Roll the mince mixture into small 2.5cm/1in meatballs.

Heat the remaining tablespoon of oil in a clean frying pan over a medium heat. Add the meatballs and fry, turning occasionally, until brown all over and completely cooked through.

For the pasta, heat the oil in a large frying pan. Add the shallots and fry for two minutes to soften, then add the cooked pasta and stir well.

Add the tomatoes and oregano and cook for 2-3 minutes, then add the meatballs and the cheese sauce. (You may need to add a little milk to loosen the cheese sauce.) The sauce should coat, not swamp, the macaroni.

Transfer the macaroni and meatballs to either a large ovenproof dish or into 10cm/4in ramekins. Top with parmesan and place into the oven to bake for 15 minutes if using a large dish, 7-8 minutes if using the ramekins.

Preheat the grill to its highest setting and place the dish or ramekins under the grill to melt and brown the cheese before serving.

Warm chicken liver salad with vinegar dressing
Ingredients
For the chicken liver salad
450g/1lb fresh chicken livers
100g/4oz mixed salad leaves (frisée lettuce , baby leaf spinach and watercress sprigs)
3 tbsp clarified butter
salt and freshly ground black pepper
For the croutons
4 thick slices white bread
3 tbsp clarified butter
For the perry vinegar dressing

1 tbsp perry vinegar
1 tsp Dijon mustard
pinch caster sugar
4 tbsp sunflower oil
1 tbsp walnut oil
salt and freshly ground black pepper
To serve
1 tbsp chopped fresh chives

Method
For the chicken liver salad, remove the sinew from the livers and, if the livers are quite large, cut them in half. Set aside.

Arrange the mixed salad leaves over the base of one large serving plate.

For the croutons, remove the crusts from the bread and cut the rest into 1cm/½ inch cubes.

Heat the clarified butter over medium heat in a frying pan. Add the bread cubes and stir well to coat in the butter. Fry for 4-5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the bread is golden-brown and crisp. Drain on kitchen paper and set aside.

Heat the clarified butter for the livers in a large, heavy-based frying pan over a high heat. Season the chicken livers with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then fry for 1-2 minutes on both sides, or until the livers are golden-brown all over but still slightly pink in the middle. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly before arranging on top of the salad leaves.

For the perry vinegar dressing, return the pan used to cook the livers to the heat and add the perry vinegar, mustard and sugar. Stir well with a wooden spoon, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Transfer to a small bowl.

Add the sunflower and walnut oil to the perry vinegar mixture and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Whisk together until well combined, then drizzle the dressing over the chicken liver salad.

To serve, scatter over the chives and the croutons and serve while the livers are still hot.

West Ham 1 – 0 Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham suffered a first defeat in their new stadium thanks to Michail Antonio’s superb second-half strike for West Ham.

Third-placed Spurs had won all four games since moving into the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in early April.

But Antonio’s goal in the 67th minute was the first Tottenham had conceded at home in that period, and means they are not yet certain of finishing in the top four in the Premier League.

West Ham’s Fabian Balbuena cleared a Vincent Janssen header off the line in stoppage time.

The win ended a run of four games without victory for West Ham, who remain 11th in the table with two games to play this season.

West Ham beat Tottenham – reaction & analysis
West Ham finished strongly, with Antonio and defender Issa Diop forcing Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris into saves in the closing stages.

Spurs looked tired – they were playing their seventh match in April, and face one more when they entertain Ajax in Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg.

Spurs’ prolonged wait to play in their rebuilt home was worth the wait before West Ham’s visit, with three league wins and a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of their epic Champions League quarter-final.

But there had been signs of strain when they struggled to overcome relegation-threatened Brighton in their previous match.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino made four changes to the side that played Brighton but, after a good start, his players appeared to run out of steam.

Son Heung-min’s low strike forced West Ham keeper Lucasz Fabianski into a save at his near post, while a Lucas Moura shot zipped across the face of goal before half-time.

Christian Eriksen also forced Fabianski into action, this time with his feet, but West Ham were happy to counter-attack from the outset.

They were the better side after the break, and the game was deep into stoppage time when substitute Janssen almost earned Spurs a point.

Everton lost ground in the race for seventh place in the Premier League as they were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Substitute Cenk Tosun’s brilliant back-heeled effort was saved by Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita in the closing stages, while winger Bernard and left-back Lucas Digne hit the post for Everton in the second half.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed opportunities to put them ahead in a lively first half, but was denied by Guaita from close range and failed to hit the target from with Seamus Coleman’s cross.

Palace had chances too, as Max Meyer fired wide early on and James McArthur struck the side-netting during a positive spell for the Eagles after the interval.

The result lifted Everton into eighth in the table, although they are now four points behind Wolves, who won 2-1 at Watford on Saturday.

Palace, who secured their Premier League survival with victory over Arsenal last weekend, remain 12th.

Southampton 3 – 3 Bournemouth

Southampton got the point they needed to secure their Premier League survival as they drew against Bournemouth in an entertaining clash at St Mary’s Stadium.

Shane Long gave the hosts a deserved 12th-minute lead with a shot that took a deflection off of Nathan Ake following Nathan Redmond’s pass.

But Bournemouth equalised with their first shot of the match when Dan Gosling finished off a quick counter-attack after being set up by Callum Wilson.

Long then could only hit the post with an open goal before Wilson put Bournemouth ahead from a rebound as Angus Gunn could not hold on to David Brooks’ effort.

However, Saints fought back and James Ward-Prowse’s low strike made it 2-2 before substitute Matt Targett headed the hosts in front from Yan Valery’s right-wing cross.

But Wilson grabbed his second – and Bournemouth’s third – late on, bundling the ball home from close range after Ryan Fraser’s run.

Despite not getting the victory, Cardiff’s 1-0 loss at Fulham means the draw was enough for Southampton to maintain their Premier League place.

After the Cardiff result was announced, the Southampton players and fans celebrated on the pitch, with chants of “we are staying up” ringing around St Mary’s.

Their Premier League survival looked a long way off in December when former manager Mark Hughes was sacked.

The club were 18th in the table with one win from 15 matches and only nine points on the board when Ralph Hasenhuttl was appointed for his first managerial role in England.

But the Austrian has made sure the Saints are safe with two games of the campaign remaining thanks to a record of eight wins, five draws and eight defeats from the 21 Premier League matches since he took over.

A thrilling south coast derby
In front of a capacity crowd, this south coast derby proved to be a thrilling and hugely enjoyable encounter.

The Saints took a deserved lead through Long before Bournemouth gained a surprise equaliser with a fine move finished off by Gosling.

Long should have restored the hosts’ advantage but produced one of the misses of the season when he hit the post with an empty goal from only a few yards out after Artur Boruc had parried his first effort.

Instead, Wilson gave the Cherries a half-time lead, but the hosts equalised within eight minutes of the restart.

A powerful header from substitute Targett – his first Southampton goal – swung the match back in the Saints’ favour, before Wilson’s second with four minutes remaining brought it level again.

With Gareth Southgate watching on, the England international had a chance for a hat-trick to seal the win for Bournemouth, but Gunn made a fine save to deny Wilson when he was through on goal.

After the final whistle at St Mary’s, the home players faced an anxious wait for confirmation of Cardiff’s defeat before the celebrations could start.

Leicester City 3 – 0 Arsenal

Jamie Vardy scored twice as Leicester dented Arsenal’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League with a dominant victory at the King Power Stadium.

The unmarked Youri Tielemans headed in a cross from James Maddison just before the hour mark, then Vardy struck late on with a header and a tap-in from close range.

Arsenal played almost an hour of the contest with 10 men after Ainsley Maitland-Niles was sent off.

A third successive Premier League defeat left them a point behind fourth-placed Chelsea, who face Manchester United at Old Trafford at 16.30 BST on Sunday.

Leicester can still finish seventh – they are three points behind Wolves with two matches left – which could earn a Europa League place depending on the outcome of the FA Cup final.

Arsenal’s task was made significantly more difficult after Maitland-Niles was sent off for the first time in his career following two bookings in the space of 28 minutes – for a soft foul on Ben Chilwell and then needlessly scything down Maddison near the halfway line.

However, a three-goal margin flattered Arsenal and, even with a full complement of players, it is difficult to envisage a different outcome such was the conviction of the performance of Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester.

Arsenal were indebted to goalkeeper Bernd Leno for a string of fine saves, the pick a magnificent one-handed diving effort to paw away a Wilfred Ndidi header.

Manchester City beat Burnley 1 – 0

Manchester City stand just two victories away from retaining their Premier League title after Sergio Aguero’s second-half goal gave them a scrappy victory over Burnley at Turf Moor.

Aguero’s 64th-minute goal – bundled in and given via goal-line technology despite Matthew Lowton’s attempted clearance – summed up much of City’s performance as Burnley’s organisation and resilience threatened to keep them out.

Gabriel Jesus had another effort kicked off the line by Ben Mee and while Burnley rarely threatened, City knew only victory would do or the initiative would be handed back to Liverpool. It was duly secured with a 12th successive league win.

Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton also saved from Aguero, Aymeric Laporte and Bernardo Silva in a City performance that was average for long spells – but the main priority of three points was achieved and they know victory at home to Leicester City and away at Brighton will ensure they keep the crown.

City have been put to the test since their Champions League quarter-final exit against Tottenham – and they have responded in the manner of champions with three wins without conceding a goal.

And in Premier League victories at home to Spurs and here at Burnley, with a routine derby win at Manchester United sandwiched in between, they have had to show a different side of their character, one not associated with the flowing football which has become their trademark.

City were so sloppy in spells, with passes going astray and moves breaking down after moments of carelessness, that there must have been genuine anxiety at half-time that they would be the first to blink in this magnificent tit-for-tat title battle with Liverpool.

In the end it was Aguero, predictably, who made the decisive contribution, as he became only the second player in Premier League history to score 20 or more goals in five consecutive campaigns, after Thierry Henry between 2001-02 and 2005-06.

The goal, like City’s display, was not a thing of beauty but City’s players and their fans did not care as they celebrated another vital step forward on the road to the title at the end.

Burnley’s supporters rose to acclaim their team at the final whistle despite defeat – another season of Premier League safety assured by manager Sean Dyche and his players.

Dyche kept his nerve when Burnley dropped into the Premier League’s bottom three after a 5-1 home defeat by Everton on Boxing Day, which left them with just 12 points from 19 games.

Tom Heaton replaced Joe Hart in goal and all the traditional Burnley qualities of organisation and determination have made sure they will be in the top flight again next term.

The problem the Clarets had here was that, despite all the sweat they expended and how expertly they were set up in defence by Dyche, they just did not have that extra touch of class in attack to lay a glove on the reigning champions.

Burnley recorded only two shots on target, their lowest in a Premier League game, and it was endeavour rather than inspiration that made it an anxious closing phase for City.

Dyche and Burnley, however, deserve huge credit for how they pulled their season around after it threatened to plunge into crisis around the Christmas period.
