Manchester United 1 – 1 Chelsea

$

0

A mistake by goalkeeper David de Gea gifted Chelsea an equaliser as Manchester United’s hopes of playing in next season’s Champions League were dented at Old Trafford.

With United leading through Juan Mata’s goal against his former club, De Gea spilled Antonio Rudiger’s 30-yard attempt for Marcos Alonso to level shortly before the interval.

It was a costly error by the Spaniard, whose form has come under scrutiny in recent weeks, although De Gea did come to his side’s rescue deep in stoppage time to deny Gonzalo Higuain a dramatic winner.

Up until Chelsea’s equaliser, United had been in control yet they remain sixth in the table, three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with two games to play, after a third successive league game without a win.

In a competitive game, both teams suffered injuries.

After Rudiger was forced off in the 64th minute, United defender Eric Bailly, who was making his first league start since 3 February, was helped off six minutes later.

Sanctions on Zimbabwe an act of cowardice: Museveni

$

THE imposition of sanctions against Zimbabwe by the West is an act of cowardice and those behind the economic restrictions should lift them, Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has said. Officially opening the 60th edition of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) here yesterday, President Museveni unequivocally called for the removal of the illegal sanctions, which have been blamed for frustrating economic recovery efforts.

“On behalf of Uganda, I want to condemn the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe for such a long time,” he said.

“This idea of sanctions is cowardice.”

Zimbabwe was slapped with illegal sanctions by Britain and her allies at the turn of the millennium after the country embarked on a successful land reform programme as part of efforts to correct skewed land ownership which favoured the minority whites.

The country, as a result of the embargo, cannot access lines of credit, making it difficult to operate a modern economy.

“Why do you put sanctions if somebody is wrong?” said President Museveni.

“Leave him! He will be failed by the mistakes. Why do you have to put sanctions if you know you are right and somebody is wrong? That means you are not sure that one is wrong?

“Otherwise if you are sure that this one is wrong, why don’t you let him say by his own mistakes.”

President Museveni appealed for the immediate lifting of sanctions which are frustrating efforts to turnaround the economy.

He recalled how in the 1950s and 1960s there was a dangerous confrontation between the East and the West, and at some stage, leaders from the two fronts met and decided what they called peaceful competition as opposed to confrontation.

President Museveni said Africa should work in unison to fight the imposition of illegal sanctions on any of its member states.

“However, it is also the fate of Africa because we don’t work together very closely. Had we been working closely, if somebody imposes sanctions on one of us, we were supposed to be able to impose counter sanctions on him,” he said.

“That’s what China does. When somebody imposes sanctions on China, China imposes counter sanctions. Here we have got an equation which is not balanced. Sanctions are one-sided forever and ever.

“I don’t agree with those who said that ‘Africans are too weak to work together’. In the 1960s, we were much weaker than we are today, but we were able to work together and support the struggle for freedom of Southern Africa under the OAU which united our position.”

President Museveni said Zimbabwe played a pivotal role supporting the struggle for freedom in Southern Africa, notably the struggle for freedom in South Africa and other countries.

“Even here, I think if we discuss closely and commit, we can have more impact on the global stage,” he said. “I am glad to be here because when I was here in 1989, Uganda was a nightmare. Christians believe, and I am one of them, that Jesus died, was buried and resurrected after three days.

“Uganda died, was buried and resurrected also. When I came here in 1989, Uganda had just resurrected. I think it was on a Monday because Jesus resurrected on Sunday, so this was on Monday when we came out of the nightmare.”

Before Uganda emerged from the woods, President Museveni said it went through difficult times, which saw the living standard of the ordinary people falling.

“In 1986, there was no sugar, no soap . . . virtually nothing. All those items called essentials were being smuggled into the country from other countries,” he said. “But today Uganda is much, much better.”

President Museveni urged Zimbabweans to soldier on and remain resilient despite the prevailing economic challenges, saying the dark phase will come to pass.

Under the new political administration led by President Mnangagwa, the country is seeking to turnaround its fortunes guided by the Transitional Stabilisation Programme (TSP), as it works towards its long term Vision 2030 of an upper middle income economy.

Tobacco rakes in US$51m

Farmers have sold 29 million kilogrammes of tobacco since the opening of the 2019 marketing season, with the bulk of the crop coming from contracted farmers. Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB)latest statistics show that farmers have sold 29,3 million kg worth US$51,1 million.

Of these, with 6,1 million kg worth US$10 million was sold through the auction floors, while the remainder was sold by contracted growers.

Deliveries at the auction floors have picked up as the variance between last year’s deliveries and this year’s volume has continued to decline.

TIMB statistics show that the 2019 volumes are 45 percent lower than those delivered by farmers during the same period last year, while earnings have dropped by 66 percent. During last year’s corresponding period, farmers had sold 53,9 million kg worth US$151,1 million.

So far, the average price of $1,75 per kg is 37,6 percent lower than the $2,80 that was obtaining at the floors last year. Tobacco growers continue to gripe about the lower prices being offered by buyers, while others are afraid they may have to reduce their hectarage next year.

The farmers said they also were not yet well conversant with the new payment system. This year, farmers are being paid 50 percent of their money in RTGS, while the remaining 50 percent will be deposited into the farmer’s nostro accounts.

The farmers may opt to get 100 percent of their money in RTGS and they will be paid using the prevailing interbank rate.

The bulk of tobacco is grown under contract farming. Under the arrangement, farmers are provided with inputs such as seed, fertilisers, chemicals and in some instances money to pay wages.

Besides the ready availability of inputs, farmers are also attracted to contract farming as the prices are favourable at the contract floors than at the auction floors.

For the past years, the highest price at the auction floor remained at US$4,99 per kilogramme, while prices at the contract floors could go as high as more than $5 per kilogramme.

Tobacco production has been on the increase, with the country benefiting from the foreign currency generated by the crop.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has come to the rescue of 20 000 Domboshava villagers who were ordered with an eviction notice by a Chinese company on Friday.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Energy Mutodi said, “President Emmerson Mnangagwa has come to the rescue of Domboshava villagers who were facing eviction by a Chinese quarry mining firm Aihua Jianye. The President has ordered that the firm stops mining activities in the area known for its rock art and as a tourist attraction.”

The Chinese company was planning to evict 20 000 individuals from their land after it was granted mining rights to extract quarry stones from a hill in their area.
Mutodi further said that at a meeting that was held at Zimbiru Primary School with Domboshava residents on Saturday it was revealed that MDC Councillor Tapiwa Murima and the District Administrator Prisca Dube were behind the sale of Garimo hill to Chinese quarry miners.

“US$ 600K, 4 cattle and goats were paid. The MP and villagers were not consulted.”Mutodi said.

Addressing the meeting Mutodi said, “We all know that the Chinese will never leave any meaningful development in our community except a trail of destruction. So we do not want them here. The law says no one will be displaced without being offered an alternative place to stay.

National Patriotic Front Spokesperson Jealousy Mawarire and Gokwe-Nembudziya Member of Parliament Mayor Justice Wadyajena have clashed over the exhibition stand erected by the First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa at the recently held Zimbabwe International Trade Fair.

The stand ran under the banner of The Office of the First Lady.
Mawarire torched the hornets’ nest when he said, “What was it exhibiting? Bedroom paraphernalia to dissuade the President from straying to small houses? This country is a joke.”

The comment did not go down well with Wadyajena of being a chauvinist and immature.
This is low Cde Mawarire. Why on earth should anybody ever expect mature politics from the youthful or even have hopes of an effective opposition when it’s composed of this type of immaturity and disgusting chauvinism.” Wadyajena responded. “Everyone loses by perpetuating this bigoted nonsense. Grow up.”

Mawarire who could not stomach the insult dug in and said, “What can be more immature and stupid than having a conjugal position exhibiting at a business expo? Zanu-PF and ED have to grow up, being First Lady is not some form of entrepreneurship warranting exhibition at the trade fair, if you believe it is, you should not only grow up but be wise.”

The reference to the Office of The First Lady and referring to her as Her Excellency has been controversial since the days of Grace Mugabe.

In 2018 Mary Chiwenga ran her office called the Office of the Second Lady.

Mangoma, Zesa bosses deny fraud charges

Former Energy minister Elton Mangoma on Thursday said charges that he unprocedurally awarded a $3 million contract to a South Korean firm have been fabricated, based on falsehoods and designed to harass him politically.

Mangoma, who is being charged together with former Zesa chief executive officer Joshua Chifamba and Zent managing director Tererai Luis Mutasa appeared before magistrate Francis Mapfumo.

In his defence, Mangoma, who was represented by Tonderai Bhatasara, said he was just a minister and not an accounting authority in terms of Public Finance and Management Act and denied that it was his responsibility to ensure that tender procedures were followed.

He also submitted that he did not hatch a plan with Chifamba and Mutasa to disregard procurement procedures as the advice was not given to him and was not for him to act on.

Chifamba also denied the allegations saying he never independently engaged the South Korean company, Techpro Company, to partner Zesa Enterprise in a switch gear partnership.

The former Zesa boss, who was represented by Admire Rubaya, submitted that the agreement between the two companies was lawful and his actions were within his line of duties as the group chief executive officer of Zesa Holdings.

He further submitted that there was a clear ploy by those who have arresting and prosecutorial powers to prosecute him for their personal gratification, yet there was no iota of evidence of any criminal misconduct in the manner he acted.
While denying the charges, Mutasa said everything he did was in consultation with the State Enterprise Restructuring Agency, State Procurement Board, the Zesa Enterprises board of directors, Zesa Holdings board of directors and Zesa Holdings legal department.

Mutasa, who is represented by Advocate Givemore Madziko, pointed out that it was wrong for the State to allege that Zesa lost $3 million while in actual fact Zent paid $850 000 to Techpro Company.

The State represented by Zivanai Macharaga then led evidence from the investigation officer Energy Mudandishe.

Allegations are that sometime in 2010, Choi Young of Techno Company met Mangoma at his offices and agreed to enter into a technology transfer partnership between Zesa Enterprises to manufacture switch gears.

Chifamba, Mutasa and Mangoma reportedly connived to by-pass the approval by the committee and the competitive bidding process to favour Techpro Company by making sure that it automatically became the partner in the technology transfer agreement.

The trio is said to have proceeded to award Techpro Company the contract and, as a result, Zesa Enterprises made an initial payment of $850 000 to the South Korean company on the strength of the technology transfer agreement.

It is further alleged that the deliverables of which the agreement sought to achieve were not met at the time of the expiry of the five-year period, resulting in questions being raised over the deal.

Due to the trio’s actions, Zesa Enterprises allegedly suffered a total prejudice of $850 000 and nothing was recovered.

Murowa Diamonds begins diamond exploration in Chivi

Murowa Diamonds has started exploration for gems in Sese communal lands in Chivi in Masvingo province where the firm has nearly 200 claims.
Murowa mines diamonds in Zvishavane in the Midlands but has 199 claims in Chivi, which are concentrated around the Sese area. It is believed the diamond belt under exploitation in Zvishavane by Murowa extends into neighboring Chivi district.

The diamond miner is exploring to establish the gem resource and commercial viability on two of its claims at Danhamombe Primary School in Sese.
The exercise is billed to run for two years with final exploration results expected at the end of next year when the gem extractor will announce a decision on whether or not to start full-scale mining.

Chivi Rural District Council chief executive Mr Tariro Matavire confirmed Murowa was on the ground exploring for diamonds.
They (Murowa) approached us to inform they were now moving onto some of their claims to start exploring for diamonds and they are drilling holes at Danhamombe Primary School sports ground where they are taking samples for laboratory examination to determine the quality of the gem resource together with the size and commercial viability, which will determine whether to start full scale mining or not,” he said.

“The company has 199 diamond mining claims in Chivi but they are working on two claims and unconfirmed reports indicate the tests taking place now will run for two years,’’ he said.

Mr Matavire said both Danhamombe Primary and Secondary schools and adjacent communities will be relocated if Murowa discovers commercially exploitable diamonds.

“The firm will use open-cast mine, which means there will be relocation of schools, villages and other facilities if diamonds are discovered in Sese.’’

He said Chivi RDC and Murowa will continue to engage over outstanding development levy, which saw the two dragging each other to court.

Murowa in denying culpability to pay the levy was arguing that it was not actively operating in Chivi district hence there was no obligation to pay the local authority. On the contrary council argued that since Murowa held diamond claims, it was liable to paying the levy whether or not it is exploiting the mineral.

If Murowa discovers rich diamond resources in Chivi, the mining of the mineral will spur the district’s development.

Diamond exploration is also underway in Mwenezi where the Zimbabwe Consolidated Mining Company is conducting an aero-magnetic survey. Masvingo has a diverse minerals resources base as the province is home to gold, coal and lithium.

Businessman faces $50 000 lawsuit

Mutare Garment Manufacturing owner and managing director Job Torindo is facing a $50 000 lawsuit filed by his United Kingdom-based brother Sham, who is accusing him of using the proceeds from the sale of his assets in establishing his business enterprise.
Sham is accusing Job of selling his properties in Mutare, including houses, and using the proceeds to establish his company, Mutare Garment Manufacturing.

Sham demanded the $50 000 in summons filed at Mutare High Court.

“The facts giving rise to this matter are that the plaintiff (Sham Torindo) left for greener pastures in 2001 for the United Kingdom where he is now employed and normally resident,” read the papers filed by Sham at Mutare High Court through his lawyers Matsika Legal Practitioners.

“The plaintiff left and entrusted his immovable properties and some movable assets under the supervision of the defendant.

“These properties included completed houses, namely Herrick Close, Fairbridge Park, Stand No. 5427 Dangamvura and 76 Managers Hill, Penhalonga, Mutare.

“The defendant’s (Job Torindo) duties were to manage the properties, collecting rentals and using the proceeds for the upkeep of the plaintiff’s family and keep moveable assets in good state ready for use by the plaintiff upon his return.”

Sham claims that some time in April 2008 he granted the power of attorney in favour of Job to handle his home and family affairs and business interests in Zimbabwe.
He also entrusted Job to acquire properties in his name preparing for his family future upon returning from UK.

According to the court papers, the two brothers agreed that Job would develop the properties in Penhalonga using proceeds from the properties and start another business that would benefit both of them.

“Around 2013, the defendant started demanding title deeds for the Penhalonga property and he could not justify why he required them as his mandate was only to develop the property,” reads the papers.

“Plaintiff then made some investigations and it became apparent that the defendant had sold the other two houses that belonged to the plaintiff without his knowledge even way before he granted him power of attorney in 2007.

“This was an irregularity as at that time the defendant had no authority to sell.

“The defendant transferred and siphoned the proceeds of sale to his own benefit and developed his business called Mutare Garment Manufacturing, to the detriment of plaintiff’s business interests and estate.”

Sham, in his court papers, said Job promised to “put everything in place” with a few years, but failed.

He also said that they had agreed to reverse the agreements regarding the management of properties.

Sham also claimed that Job acknowledged owing him $50 000 to “cure” his previous misdeeds.

“The defendant offered to liquidate the amount by paying instalments of $5 000 per quarter of the year starting March 31 2018.

“The defendant has failed to honour and liquidate his indebtedness in terms of the acknowledgement of the debt,” he said.

China in $1.8bn electricity deal with Ethiopia

Work to resolve a crippling power shortage on East and Central Africa’s only electric standard gauge railway may soon start in earnest following the signing of a $1.8bn (£1.4bn) deal between China and Ethiopia.

In a tweet, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s office said China had agreed to invest the money to improve power on the line between Ethiopia and Djibouti, and to boost electricity supply to Ethiopian cities and up to 16 industrial parks.
The deal was reached on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Initiative Forum, which Mr Abiy and a string of other leaders are attending in China’s capital, Beijing.

The signing of the deal came almost immediately after an announcement that China had offered Ethiopia a reprieve on some of the debt it had accrued to the end of 2018.

The scope of the reprieve remains unclear, with Mr Abiy’s office sending out conflicting messages on Wednesday.

Data from the China-Africa Research Initiative shows Ethiopia owes Beijing $13.73bn.

Ethiopia is not the first country in Africa to have its Chinese loan burden lifted. Earlier this year, China “forgave” $78m owed by Cameroon.

Oliver Mtukudzi’s Will a Shocker as he Leaves everything to Daisy, Nothing for his children

NEARLY four months after the death of music legend Dr Oliver Mtukudzi, a Harare law firm has filed with the Master of High Court, a one-page Will and Testament bequeathing all movable and immovable property to surviving spouse Mrs Daisy Kudzai Mtukudzi.

All his children and other family members were left out.

Since the death of the music icon, relatives have been on each other’s throats jostling for the property left behind by Dr Mtukudzi.

The news of the existence of a will had not been broken to the family members.
Last week, Thoughts Deme Attorneys at Law, filed a will dated April 15, 2014 believed to have been left behind by Dr Mtukudzi.

The will appointed Chibune & Associates, a law firm currently under curatorship following the death of its principal, as the executor dative to the estate.

Chibune & Associates is under curatorship of Thoughts Deme following the death of Mr Steve Chibune in 2017.

Thoughts Deme, being the curator, filed the will with the Master of High Court
Part of the will reads: “I, Oliver Mtukudzi, born 22 September, 1952, presently domiciled in Zimbabwe, hereby cancel and annul all former wills and cordials and declare this to be my last will and testament.

OLIVER MTUKUDZI

“I nominate and appoint Chibune & Associates Legal Practitioners to be the executor of my last will and administrator of my estate and effects, hereby giving and granting unto him all such powers as allowed in law especially those of assumption and substitution and direct that my executor shall not be required to file security with the Master of the High Court in respect of his appointment.”

Dr Mtukudzi, according to the will, left out all his children and gave everything to the surviving spouse.

“I hereby bequeath all my properties, share and shares in any company or companies or entities to my wife, Daisy Kudzai Mtukudzi born on the second of February 1959,” reads the will.

Considering that the filed will appoints a now defunct law firm as the executor, the Master of High Court has since called all beneficiaries and interested parties to attend an edict meeting to appoint an executor.

The edict meeting will be convened on May 21 this year at 8am at the Master’s House along Herbert Chitepo Avenue, Harare.

Zimbabwean workers celebrate May Day with empty stomachs

$
0
0

It’s all gloomy faces across the country as workers celebrate the workers day with empty stomachs.

May Day is a public holiday usually celebrated on 1 May. It is an ancient Northern Hemisphere spring festival and a traditional spring holiday in many cultures. Dances, singing, and cake are usually part of the festivities.

In the late 19th century, May Day was chosen as the date for International Workers’ Day by the Socialists and Communists of the Second International to commemorate the Haymarket affair in Chicago. International Workers’ Day can also be referred to as “May Day”, but it is a different celebration from the traditional May Day.

Zimbabwean workers have been exposed and vulnerable to wantonly price hikes with poor remuneration.

Companies are closing down and laying off workers. Workers are working under very tough conditions and not having enough protection. Miners are being trapped in mines. Safety of workers has not been spelt well to most of the workers and they work under squalid conditions.

We don’t have any factories and functional industries to talk about in the country. Most workers have been working for more than six months without any payment in anticipation that one day they will get their salaries.

Workers of late have been now donating labour in Zimbabwe and their pensions have been heavily eroded for the past 10 years. A Zimbabwean worker has become the most useless person in our motherland as they toil all year around with nothing to show off at the end of he year.

Farmers have not been spared. Farming inputs are always hard to access and farmers get a raw deal at the markets with their produce fetching very low prices.

It is sad to learn that most of the workers in Zimbabwe have been reduced to street vendors. What is there to celebrate if people can’t afford to put a decent meal on their tables? Workers cannot afford to access medication which is beyond their reach.

Workers have been working very hard for their families. Internet data has gone up whilst the prices of most basic commodities have shot up. It is sad to learn that most of the workers in Zimbabwe have been reduced to street vendors. The country is in dire need of spiritual intervention. Vendors are finding it hard too everywhere. Things have fallen apart. Most mining towns have become ghost towns. Workers have been shortchanged and all hope has been lost.

The dilapidation and erosion of the workers moral has been a cause of concern. Inflation is spiralling upwards and the days of 2008 are beckoning. Zimbabwe is waiting to celebrate the real workers day where workers will celebrate what they have worked for.

My only experience of the workers day celebrations were during the time when the late Dr Morgan Tsvangirayi was a President of Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union. Every time he delivered his commemoration speeches on the podium to address the crowd everybody would clap their hands. Those were days when the government listened to the plight of workers both serving in the public and private sector.

Our government has dismally failed to address issues affecting the workers at national level. Workers rights are being abused everyday and no one takes action. Workers are being fired without being represented.

It is regrettable that most of the young workers have not seen a pay slip in Zimbabwe. Corruption is so rampant and it has been a cancerous disease in the country. The government has failed to implement issues to do with workers social welfare.

National Patriotic Front Spokesperson Jealousy Mawarire has defended the decision by MDC to elect Shadreck Mashayamombe who is former Zanu-PF Harare province secretary for commissariat to the position of secretary for mobilisation committee in the MDC and Jappy Jaboon who was the ruling party’s Masvingo province secretary for commissariat for the position of secretary for strategic projects (intelligence committee).

The MDC has recently come under fire from its fierce critics who are accusing it of being captured by the ex-G40 members.

Said Mawarire, “The Cdes have done NO WRONG. They haven’t abandoned the fight for democracy but just changed stations. Iconic freedom fighters like General Mujuru crossed floors from Zapu to Zanu but remained steadfast in fight 4 a free Zim. We wish cdes Jaboon and Mashayamombe well in their new positions.”

Mashayamombe and Jaboon are former members of NPF.
Some MDC members are saying the election of the two violates the party’s constitution. For anyone to assume a position in the party, they must have served at grassroots level for more than five years.

Party spokesperson Jacob Mafume said that constitutional provision does not apply because Mashayamombe and Jaboon are coming in as alliance partners.

“They are coming in as alliance partners, remember they were candidates for MDC in last year’s harmonised election and if they were good enough to sit in Parliament representing MDC they are also good enough to be in structures,” Mafume said.

Air Zimbabwe buys new plane

BELEAGUERED Air Zimbabwe has bought a new plane, an Embraer ERJ-145, bringing the number of planes owned by the company to two.

The post-Cabinet briefing yesterday reported that Zimbabwe has taken note of the delivery of an Embraer plane, which landed at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport yesterday, shortly after the airline’s sole plane was grounded after it developed a mid-air fire scare on its way from South Africa on Sunday.

The acquisition of the plane is part of efforts to revive the national airline, Cabinet said.

Air Zimbabwe was put under construction in 2018 after it was diagnosed to be a failing parastatal.

The new plane is branded Zimbabwe Airways which is the name of a failed airline that was fronted by former President Robert Mugabe’s son-in-law, Simba Chikore.

Aviation expert Jerry Haas said: “The Embraer E145 will be branded to AirZim livery in the coming days and registered with CAAZ (Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe). Air Zimbabwe trained eight pilots in South Africa for the E145 rating. It’s expected to be in service for mid to end of May.”

MDC clashes with Tsvangirai family

The opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has dismissed an instruction by the late Veteran Politician Morgan Richard Tsvangirai’s family that those who will attend his memorial service must not wear political party regalia.

Speaking during a press statement on Tuesday Party Spokesperson Jacob Mafume said, “We will attend the memorial service of our late icon in full force. We are going to be wearing whatever we want whether it is party regalia or not.
As you remember Morgan Tsvangirai was the Founder of MDC. He is red inside his blood, inside his grave and in heaven where he is.”
When asked about the instruction from the Tsvangirai family Mafume said, “We are the family of Morgan Richard Tsvangirai. The family of Tsvangirai is the MDC. They were beaten with him, they died with him and lived with him. Some of us are carrying scars of being part of Tsvangirai’s family.”

On Monday the Tsvangirai family spokesperson Manase Tsvangirai told private media that, “The other thing we would like to highlight is that, we hope and believe that people who are coming for this memorial, should not be seen wearing any political parties’ regalia. Instead we expect people to be wearing the regalia of the late Morgan Tsvangirai.”

Manase added that the family was hoping Zimbabweans would respect their wish.

“This is a memorial and we expect people to respect this family decision by putting branded t-shirts with his face only. This is our wish as a family as a measure of respect to the late Tsvangirai whom everybody called their icon,” said Tsvangirai’s brother.

President Mnangagwa wants worker’s salaries reviewed?

President Mnangagwa has implored employers to review salaries and conditions of service for their workers to improve their living standards.

Addressing the nation on the eve of the 2019 Workers Day Celebrations last night, President Mnangagwa paid tribute to the workers for their role in building the national economy and sustaining families.

Government, he said, was aware of the plight of the workers and challenged employers to look into the workers’ remuneration.

“My Government is fully aware of the challenges facing the labour sector,” he said.

“As we continue on the path of development and progress, I challenge employers to use this day as an opportunity to reflect and evaluate the welfare, remuneration, conditions of service, safety and state of workers, among other issues.”

President Mnangagwa

President Mnangagwa saluted the workers for their contribution in building the nation, saying they were an essential component in Government’s drive towards the attainment of vision 2030. “You are a sector that we are giving due attention in the Second Republic,” he said.

“We know that with you as partners, we will realise the modernisation, industrialisation, growth and prosperity of our economy.”
President Mnangagwa reiterated Government’s commitment to restore the purchasing power of workers.

In addition, the President said his administration was committed to restore the decency and dignity of all workers. He expressed disquiet over the counter-productive machinations by irresponsible and unpatriotic members of industry and businesses who continue to frustrate and undermine the economic, modernisation and industrialisation agenda.

“The wanton, unjustified increases in prices are unpalatable and may point to some other sinister motives,” said President Mnangagwa.

“This conduct must stop forthwith. My Government will not stand by and leave workers and the generality of our people at the mercy of a small group with rent seeking and profiteering tendencies.”

President Mnangagwa assured workers that Government would continue to protect them and to be the guarantor to their constitutionally enshrined rights. He said the transport system should be viable, while housing delivery, clean water, sanitation and energy should also be adequate and affordable.

President Mnangagwa recently unveiled a fleet of ZUPCO buses which will ease the transport costs in both urban and rural areas.

“The comprehensive housing delivery programme and the smart cities concept will see better living conditions for our workers,” he said.

Through the ease of doing business reforms, President Mnangagwa said Government would continue to encourage and facilitate more exports across all sectors, which should translate to improved business performance and ultimately better conditions of service for the workers.
