Earlier this week, it emerged that controversial radio presenter Phat Joe had been suspended by SABC for repeatedly failing to show up for work. The DJ had reportedly taken several unsactioned off days, leaving his co-host Nala Tose to host Phat Joe and The Family alone. He was said to have added himself a few more holiday days after the Christmas break.

“The SABC can confirm that Mr Majota Kambule is currently on special leave, details of which we’re unable to comment on out of respect for the contractual relationship between the two parties,” a spokesman for the station said.

After news outlets ran with the ‘suspended’ headline, SABC has come out to dispute that, insisting it was a ‘special leave’. Phat Joe has since returned on air, but neither party is ready to reveal the circumstances surrounding his absense. Zupco receives 65 more buses from China

Zupco receives 65 more buses from China. The government has intensified efforts to recapitalise Zimbabwe United Passenger Company as it moves to restore sanity in the public transport sector through the importation of conventional buses from Belarus and China. The latest consignment of 65 buses arrived at Beitbridge Border Post at the weekend where authorities are finalising the importation formalities.

By the end of the day yesterday 20 Golden Dragon buses had arrived on the Zimbabwean side of the border, while others were expected late last night.
The consignment comes a few months after the Government took receipt of 70 more buses from China. It is understood that the imports are fruits of agreements signed during President Mnangagwa’s visit to the Asian country a few months ago.

However, the Ministers of Transport, Joel Matiza and that of Local Government were both not available for comment yesterday. The actual cost of each bus could not be readily verified, but each bus is sold at over us$17 000 in China. According to border sources, the contingent of buses had been shipped via Durban, South Africa.
“The buses are coming in batches and currently import documents of 65 buses are being processed by a customs clearing company contracted by the Government,” said a border official.

H-Metro understands that more than 1 000 buses have been acquired from China and they are being delivered to the country in batches. President Mnangagwa has since reaffirmed Government’s commitment to ease transport challenges by availing reliable and affordable transport to the people in line with Vision 2030. During a recent address while commissioning another batch of Zupco buses, the Head of State said; “My Government will continue to prioritize comprehensive urban public transport systems to increase convenience, reliability, and comfort with the commuting public.

“In order to improve the transport service as I have said today, we are releasing more buses and the distribution will be announced by Zupco. “Some are still at the port and some are still at the border but because of the challenges being faced by our population, both urban and rural, in particular the working population, we have decided to release the buses whenever they arrive so that we ameliorate the challenges of the transport system.”

More details emerge of the Newlands shooting after a nasty break-up. A Harare woman is definitely lucky to be alive after narrowly escaping death at Newlands Shopping Centre yesterday when her lover ran riot and tried to gun her down for breaking up with him. Recalling the shooting, Loraite disclosed that Chimanga pointed the gun at her during an altercation whilst in the two were seated in the car, forcing her to open the door and flee.

Loraite Magombedze-a hairstylist who works at the shopping centre-gave a chilling account of how she cheated death when her boyfriend, Joy Chimanga, fired shots at her before turning the gun on himself.

This comes after iHarare reported yesterday that an unidentified assailant was battling for life after shooting himself on the mouth following a nasty fallout with his girlfriend which saw him firing shots at her but missing the intended murder victim. Speaking to the local publication, H-Metro, Loraite, who was still in shock, narrated the ordeal and revealed that the two had been having relationships problems for some time.

We had an altercation in the car and he pointed a gun at me and I forced the door open and ran away. Ndamhanya ndikapunzika ndikamuka ndikamhanya ndikanzwa pfuti kurira saka handisati ndanyatsodzikama izvezvi.

I have been in love with Chimanga since April last year and I lost affection towards him on Saturday when I slept at his house in St Martins. He locked the doors and I slept there. My parents were angry with me and ordered me to return to his house since he is known. I had lost affection towards him and decided to go and stay with my friends. That is why I phoned him this morning (yesterday) ndichimuramba saka haanakufara nazvo.

Amid the chaos, there were claims that Loraite’s brother is the one who ordered her to return to Chimanga after learning that she had slept over at his house. He arrived at the scene where some of Loraite’s friends shouted at him for causing yesterday’s mishap.

Man kills 4 children after posting on Facebook that his wife infected him HIV. In a mindboggling incident, a disgruntled and elderly man from Limpopo ended the lives of his four biological children in a desperate bid to get back at his bed-hopping wife whom he accused of infecting him the human immunodeficiency virus(HIV). Surprisingly, the killings occurred not long after the distressed man had taken to social media to vent out his frustrations.

The murderer, Senyatse Lucas Pasha in a series of Facebook posts poured his heart out citing unfair treatment from his youthful wife whom he sensationally claimed was spending time with her much younger boyfriends whilst denying her attention.

In a post dated 17 February 2020, that left many of his followers shell-shocked, Lucas Pasha disclosed all the names of the men he suspected were having illicit s.e.xual affairs with his wife only identified as Sylvia. He also added that, because his wife had many s.e.xual partners, she had contracted HIV which she transferred to him.

In another post, the seemingly suicidal man claimed that his wife could not do simple tasks such as bathing his children and cooking for them.  He also added that whenever he bought foodstuffs they usually ended up rotten as his wife was absent from their matrimonial home much of the time.

Despite several warnings by his Facebook friends, Lucas instead turned a deaf ear and went on to kill their four children and has since gone on the run. However, some social media users have lashed out at Sylvia for being the root cause of the tragedy.

Jonathan Moyo asks for VP Chiwenga’s forgiveness

Jonathan Moyo asks for VP Chiwenga’s forgiveness. Self-exiled former minister and Zanu PF politburo member Jonathan Moyo is seeking to apologise to Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga after accusing him of using a ghostwriter for his doctoral thesis.

On July 11, 2017, four months before Chiwenga led a coup that toppled long time ruler, the late Robert Mugabe, Moyo alleged that the then Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces did not write the thesis for his doctorate from the University of KwaZulu Natal. Chiwenga sued and demanded $5 million in defamation claims.

But yesterday, Moyo’s lawyers confirmed the two parties were in touch over the matter with the hope of concluding it cordially despite it being before the courts. Moyo’s lawyer, Chris Mhike of Atherstone and Cook said legal representatives of the respective parties were “still mutually and amicably seized with the matter, with a view to concluding it cordially.”

“It is highly regrettable that correspondence which was designed to be strictly private and confidential has been widely publicised on social media, apparently for mischievous and malignant reasons,” Mhike said.

“It must be noted that the High Court case remains pending, and is, therefore, sub judice. We are therefore unable to meaningfully comment on the issue. The furthest we can go at this stage, in terms of commentary, is to confirm that the legal representatives of the respective parties are still mutually and amicably seized with the matter, with a view to concluding it cordially.” Chiwenga’s lawyer, Wilson Manase was not picking his calls yesterday.

Moyo and Chiwenga were embroiled in vicious clashes during the height of factionalism in Zanu PF between a faction aligned to then Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa under the moniker, Lacoste and another better known as G40 that coalesced around the former First Lady Grace Mugabe.

While Moyo was a key G4O proponent, Chiwenga was said to be the power behind the Lacoste faction led by Mnangagwa. Chiwenga accused Moyo of being a war deserter who fled from the liberation struggle, a claim that angered the former Information minister.

Moyo snapped back on Twitter:

“Finally, I’m happy that Chiwenga wants pre- and post-independence disclosures about who was who, who did what and so forth. That’s good. “Meanwhile, I take that to mean he wants the disclosure of who contributed what to his doctorate and who really wrote his KZN PhD. Again, the Shona wisdom that kunyarara kurinani panekutaura, applies. #Handeitione,” Moyo said in the statement that triggered the lawsuit. Moyo is now in exile after escaping the crackdown by the army during the coup that led to Mugabe’s ouster.

Kabelo Mabalane swims in a sea of debt

Kabelo Mabalane is allegedly embroiled in a loan payment row that has a few twists to it. Sunday World reported that the legendary musician took a personal loan worth, 1,9 million from BlueChip Retail Solutions. Due to the alleged failure of keeping up with the instalments, the company has dragged the matter to the court.

Through their lawyers, BlueChip Retail Solutions forwarded a letter of demand to Kabelo – which served as a reminder to settle the remaining amount. Sunday Sun was in possession of the letter sent to Kabelo and part of it reads as follows

Gail and Kabelo Moabalane

“In the premise you have failed or alternatively neglected to adhere to the terms and conditions of agreement… Our client notes receipt of payment in the amount of about R250,000. It is noteworthy that the balance remaining amounts to R1,080,295.92.”

Kabelo’s take on the matter provides a confusing twist, as he believes that, he is only left with an outstanding amount of R4,000 as he has allegedly paid back 1,5 million so far. The lawyers declined to divulge additional information but they did confirm that Kabelo was still owing them money.

Polygamist Musa Mseleku has managed to land himself on the Twitter “men are trash” list again after he made a statement that left Mnakwethu viewers feeling like he’s supportive of destructive behaviour.

Polygamist Musa Mseleku1

It seems that Mnakwethu is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to bringing debate -worthy content. Since the first episode of the show aired, it managed to spark different conversations across social media and mainstream media platforms about polygamy, polyandry, lobola, and many other topics.

Musa, a proud polygamist, was the core reason behind Twitter’s tiff on Tuesday night when he made a statement that left tweeps shook.

Musa Mseleku

Sandile asked Musa, through the mandate of the show, to help him introduce his desire to take a second wife. His wife, MaNzama, initially said no, on the basis that Sandile was basically asking her to accept the side-chick (Zinhle) he’s been cheating with for a while.

In trying to help explain the situation to MaNzama, Musa then dropped a bomb of a statement.

“Khuzwayo (Sandile) is in love with Zinhle. Cheating is for western people. We don’t cheat, we fall in love,” Musa said.

POLAD members threaten to leave ED alone in the forum

POLAD members threaten to leave ED alone in the forum. Chairperson of the Polad’s governance and legislative agenda subcommittee, Lovemore Madhuku, said his committee had recommended to the group to have the Constitutional Amendment Bill withdrawn. Political Actors Dialogue (Polad) partners have upped the stakes on President Emmerson Mnangagwa, threatening to walk out on him if his government does not withdraw the Constitutional Amendment Bill gazetted by Justice minister, Ziyambi Ziyambi early this year.

He said the recommendation was adopted as a resolution, meaning Mnangagwa should now instruct his minister to withdraw the Bill. Madhuku warned that if Mnangagwa did not enforce the resolution, it would be a clear sign that the platform was not effective and would therefore not need to continue.

“Given that the recommendations on the Constitutional Amendment Bill are unanimous, a refusal by the government will be a disbanding of Polad. There will be no Polad to talk about. Zanu PF is part of Polad. It runs the government. If it is sincere in being part to the Polad recommendations, it has to influence the government to accept the Polad position,” Madhuku said.

Parties in Polad are increasingly under pressure from their supporters to record some wins and stop behaving like they were owned by Zanu PF.

Madhuku said apart from recommending the withdrawal of the Bill, the committee also said there was no need for government to change the terms and conditions of judges. “We found that the Bill has areas that you would accept, they are very few but many of the areas that are in the Bill, we feel they are unacceptable and not to be debated further,” he said.

“I need to say here the one which is of interest to the public, which has come out of Polad is the area related to the Judiciary. All the proposed changes to the Judiciary which are contained in the Bill we totally recommended a rejection of those proposals, so that we remain with the current constitutional provisions of the Judiciary, meaning that there must not be a change to the retirement age of 70. There must not be that provision which is suggesting yearly extensions up to five years for judges of the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court, which we have made clear.”

Polad said it would also write its own Bill on electoral reforms, making it the third such effort after Zimbabwe Elections Support Network (Zesn) which has since submitted a draft to Speaker of the House of Assembly Jacob Mudenda and the MDC which said it’s in the process of coming up with its own Bill. Zanu PF representative in Polad Paul Mangwana was not immediately available for comment as his number was unreachable, while Ziyambi was not picking calls.

Fresh details emerge: General Mujuru was murdered. Mujuru, an illustrious fighter of the 1970s Zimbabwe liberation war, died mysteriously in an inferno at his Beatrice farm in August 2011. Zimbabwean-born and Oxford University associate professor, Miles Tendi has launched a book which claims that the late army general, Solomon Mujuru, did not die in an ordinary fire hence there was a deliberate scene contamination by the State.

An inquest into the death of the first black national army commander of independent Zimbabwe concluded in March 2012 that there was no foul play in his death, despite widespread speculation that the general had been killed in a Zanu PF political power play.

But in a book titled, The Army & Politics in Zimbabwe: Mujuru, the Liberation Fighter & Kingmaker launched at the School of Oriental and African Studies in the United Kingdom on Monday, Tendi also explained that Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga never forgave the late general after allegations of an affair with his wife.

In videos of the launch posted on Twitter by Zimbabwe journalist Violet Gonda, Tendi said inconsistencies in the narrative of the death of Mujuru points to an internal job in Zanu PF. He said Mujuru was buried with no DNA evidence.

He queried why the VIP Protection Unit claimed ignorance on some things they had been hired to do in protecting the late liberation war supremo. “The VIP Protection Unit could not explain why they only realised at 1:40am that the house was on fire, why they did not break the window at 1:40am to enter the farmhouse to rescue Mujuru,” Tendi questioned.

“The VIP Protection Unit stated that they did not know where Mujuru’s bed was located, yet the same VIP security had been providing security at Mujuru’s farm for a record duration of time, compared to past officers assigned there.” He added: “Is it inconceivable that after three months of guarding the farmhouse, the security did not know, could not locate the massive bedroom where the person they were trying to protect slept?”

Mujuru, long seen as the kingmaker in Zanu PF after catapulting Mugabe to the Zanu PF leadership at the famous Mgagao Declaration of October 1975, was believed to be the power behind the ascendancy of his wife, former Vice-President Joyce Mujuru in 2004. Many people believed his intention to elevate his wife to the post of Mugabe’s deputy was to block the rise of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the then powerful contender in the Zanu PF succession race.

Displaying pictures of the late general’s charred body in his presentation, Tendi queried the uneven way Mujuru’s body was burnt and why the State overlooked the contradictions in the statements by his security personnel.

He said the officers said they interacted with Mujuru before he met his death, but contradicted each other, with some saying he was sober while the others said he was drunk, but the contradictions were never interrogated in the inquest.

In some of the tweets, Gonda wrote: “Book reveals it was no ordinary fire that killed the general even though the State said no foul play. Tendi: there was deliberate scene contamination by the State.” In another tweet, Gonda wrote: “Tendi says beef between General Chiwenga and Solomon Mujuru was because of an alleged s.e.x scandal. Chiwenga never forgave Mujuru after finding his army jacket in his bedroom.”

Huawei loses legal challenge of US federal purchase ban

Washington has the right to block US federal agencies from buying products by Huawei on cybersecurity grounds, a judge ruled Tuesday, dismissing the Chinese telecom giant’s legal challenge to a purchase ban. Huawei filed the suit last year and claimed Congress had failed to provide evidence to support a law that stopped government agencies from buying its equipment, services, or working with third parties that are Huawei customers. But the court ruled there was no constitutionally guaranteed right to a contract with the federal government.

The ban was justified in the context of a congressional investigation “into a potential threat against the nation’s cybersecurity,” wrote US District Judge Amos Mazzant. Huawei said in a statement it was disappointed with the ruling and would “continue to consider further legal options.”

Washington has long considered Huawei a possible security danger due to the background of founder Ren Zhengfei, a former Chinese army engineer. It has warned that the company’s systems could be manipulated by Beijing to spy on other countries and disrupt critical communications, and is urging nations to shun the firm.

Huawei

Concerns have intensified with Huawei’s rise to become a world leader in telecom networking equipment and one of the top smartphone manufacturers alongside Samsung and Apple. But the firm is expected to play a major role in the rollout of ultra-fast 5G networks that will allow wide adoption of next-generation technologies such as artificial intelligence.

Huawei equipment has been seen as considerably more advanced than 5G competitors such as Sweden’s Ericsson or Finland’s Nokia, while no US company is considered a serious rival. Last week the US also slapped the company with criminal charges for an alleged “decades-long” effort to steal trade secrets from American companies.

Huawei’s chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada in 2018 on a US warrant in a related probe into her company’s violation of US sanctions. She is under house arrest awaiting a ruling on whether she will be extradited to face charges south of the border.

Being a world-renowned DJ and a successful entrepreneur means Zinhle isn’t always home. But she said Kairo’s independence was one of her most impressive traits.

She told The MVP Club previously: “I’m so blessed, she’s so amazing. She’s very independent, super-kind, very affectionate, very decisive, more decisive than me. I don’t know where she gets it. I’m a new parent so I don’t know if we taught her that or whether she came like that if there’s a pre-packaged that you get. She’s super-independent and I think the independence comes from how Kiernan and I are just always on the road and always at work. Local film nominated for an international award. Award-winning filmmaker and the brains behind the production, Sydney Taivavashe, said he was delighted by the nomination. Local film Gonarezhou has been nominated for the Best First Feature Narrative award at the 28th edition of the Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) which kicked off last Thursday and will end on February 23 in Los Angeles, California, NewsDay Life & Style has learnt.

Taivavashe recently told this paper that he was over the moon after receiving news of the nomination, which places him alongside international giants of fiction movies. “The nomination feels good as it is proof that our production is capable of competing with other films at an international level. The festival is the biggest for blacks in America and that nomination is a win for us. We continue to put Zimbabwe on the map,” he said.

The filmmaker said although that was his fifth feature film, it was special to him. “I started writing this story in 2013 and all these years we have been working towards the realisation of this project. We have faced many challenges but we have kept faith and I am happy with the product we have,” he said.

Taivavashe said the production, which had its world premiere in Los Angeles last Sunday, with a second screening set for tomorrow, featured prominent Zimbabwean actors Eddie Sandifolo and Tendai Chitima as well as musician Tamy Moyo. “The movie is a Masvingo feature film which raises awareness on poaching and human trafficking.

It started production in November 2018 and wrapped up in August 2019. It traces the life of an underprivileged man as he falls into the hands of a notorious gang of poachers who lure him to be involved with the promise of riches,” he said. Taivavashe said he hoped the film would help raise awareness that fighting poaching was not a white or government-only campaign but for everyone.

“The way we made the film will allow people to look at wildlife differently. It will also highlight issues of girls who might be vulnerable to human trafficking. It shows the nature of the illegal activities that take place,” he said. Taivavashe and Sandifolo flew to Los Angeles on Monday.

A joint venture involving Nelne Pictures, Meso Maviri and Jubilee Arts, the production was recorded and produced by Wentworth Art World, Audly Studios, Ceeklear Music, Nelned Pictures Studios and Ngano Studios. The Pan African Film Festival is a non-profit making organisation that promotes cultural understanding among Africans through exhibiting art and film.

Taivavashe produced his debut short film titled The Terrific Nights in 2006. His first feature film, Through the Night, was nominated for the Outstanding Feature Film award at the 2014 Nama. In 2017, Sydney won a Nama award for directing Seiko, a silent short film before partnering Great Zimbabwe University to produce the feature film Solo naMutsai, portraying the experience of students who come from poor backgrounds and are at the university in the same year.

Local music producer Prince Kaybee weighed in on the ongoing debate regarding FW de Klerk saying that apartheid wasn’t a crime against humanity. Taking to his Twitter page on Monday, the “Fetch Your Life” hitmaker didn’t mince his words regarding his feeling toward the former deputy president and said: “We cannot have killers like De Klerk denying and defending apartheid with no action taken.

“If his Nobel Peace Prize can’t be stripped away then we must remove him from all democratic activities. If we don’t act now, these apartheid racists will continue to disrespect us! The “Gugulethu” hitmaker’s fans also applauded him for his statement.

Prince Kaybee

This comes after de Klerk appeared on SABC news where he did “not fully agree” with the presenter that apartheid was a crime against humanity and that there were very few deaths during the apartheid regime and it shouldn’t be placed in the same category as genocide or crimes against humanity.

De Klerk has since apologised for “the anger, hurt and confusion” he caused with the statement.
