Fans and LGBT activists cancel AKA after M-word comment, though he’s sorry now

AKA fans of all s.e.xual orientations are taking to social media to ‘cancel’ the musician from their list. It’s said any publicity is good publicity and it seems Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes will go to any lengths for media coverage: from failed crowd surfing videos to baby mama drama and telling fellow musician Cassper Nyovest’s that his family can “suck my d**k”.

But now, after his use of the derogatory word ‘moffie’, gay rights activists and fans are saying the multi-award-winning rapper-songwriter has gone too far. In his tweet on Thursday, AKA called Cassper a moffie for not signing a contract for a boxing match that was set to take place in September. Nyt nyt. Tag his bitch ass all day … tell him to sign and stop being a moffie,” said AKA on his Twitter feed – and almost immediately bore the full brunt of fans and the LGBTQI+ community.

On Friday, AKA issued an apology to all those he offended. In a series of tweets, AKA said: “I would like to apologise to anybody offended by my use of the word ‘Moffie’ in a previous tweet. At some point, i thought it wasn’t a big deal to use this word. I understand now that it’s not acceptable.

Roché Kester, from the hate crimes unit at OUT, a local gay rights and services NGO, said they had immediately condemned AKA’s use of the word. Speaking to The Citizen, Kester said: “His use of the word is unwarranted and it normalises derogatory and homophobic language among the heterosexual community.”

Kester said this behaviour, especially when displayed by prominent public figures, sent a harmful message to fans and could have far-reaching consequences for the LGBTQI+ population. Approximately eight cases of hate crimes have this year alone been reported. And those are just the ones we know of. Many more occur and are not reported because of fear of secondary discrimination when reporting to the police.

AKA

Just this past February, 23-year-old LGBTQI gender activist Lindokuhle Cele was stabbed multiple times in full view of the public at an uMlazi butchery in what his family believes was a hate crime.

Anthony Waldhausen, director of the Gay and Lesbian Network, in a statement shortly after the attack, said there was an increase in hate crimes against gays and lesbians in the country. We are very concerned about this. Even though we have a Constitution that protects everyone, we are still having these cases, fights and discrimination. The government needs to try to get to the bottom of this,” he told IOL.

In an advocacy document titled Why Does South Africa Need Hate Crimes Legislation?, the Hate Crimes Working Group says there exists no official recording of hate crimes in South Africa. Government departments have made their own efforts to record crimes against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex persons or crimes they consider motivated by xenophobia.

AKA fans of all s.e.xual orientations are taking to social media to “cancel” the musician from their list. Among them is Ashraf Booley, the president of the Impulse Cape Town office, which advocates for gay rights and other essential services.

“As a gay man living in Cape Town, the derogatory term ‘moffie’ has been used as a weapon against me and so many others like me for as long as I can remember. In the context of the AKA-Cassper Nyovest Twitter tirade, it was uncalled for, undeniably queerphobic, and hurtful to not only his queer fans but our community as a whole,” he told The Citizen.

Despite our attempts to try to reclaim and de-weaponise the term ‘moffie’, queer-phobes such as AKA are constantly using the slur to belittle and dehumanise us. Perhaps it is time we find new ways to talk about being queer in South Africa that aren’t derogatory.” In closing, Booley added that AKA had been “cancelled”.

MDC Youth Boss Sithole rejects claims that his party wants him out for being too soft

MDC Youth Boss Sithole rejects claims that his party wants him out for being too soft. In an interview with Nehanda Radio, Sithole said the accusations were made by people who want to destabilise the main opposition party and with a “natural hate” of the leader of the youth wing.

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Youth Assembly chairperson Obey Sithole has rejected reports that the party is working on dethroning him over allegations of being “too soft” to confront ZANU PF, adding that these were ruling party plans to destabilise the opposition party.

“To start with, the phrase “too soft” as used by the unknown or imaginary source is subjective, it cannot be quantified. As such I take such comments as the work of hate and insincerity meant to derail the people’s struggle. “The things that are cited are just but a confirmation of two issues that the person is driven by natural hate of my person or s/he is deeply detached from real developments within the assembly,” Sithole said.

According to media reports, plans to dethrone Sithole were afoot as shown by the flash demonstration which took place in Harare last week while he was out in Germany. The last demonstration of the opposition youth resulted in the arrest of Youth Assembly spokesperson Stephen Chuma, among other members who are believed to be part of the radical camp.

He is also accused of failing to provide leadership of the Youth Assembly unlike his predecessor Happymore Chidziva popularly known as Bvondo. Sithole however, claimed to have led many demonstrations and he dismissed any comparisons with Bvondo citing that he was his political mentor.

“The assumption that a flash demonstration that took place in my absence shows that am “too soft” is misplaced. If anything, it proves that the assembly which I lead is a formidable team that compliments each other.

“In any case it is not the first time when such demonstrations have taken place, so many have taken place in my presence. Thus, I don’t know why it has suddenly become an issue on this one which took place when I was out of the country on party business.

“It is even ridiculous for one to think of comparing me with Bvondo. He served for 5 years and I have served for less than a year so far, obviously no sane person would want to compare achievements of such significant differences in lengthy of service.

“Moreover, Bvondo is a man of his own mold and I am me regardless of the fact that he is one of the few people who have sacrificed a lot in making me politically. “Infact, Bvondo is one of the greatest Youth Commanders the MDC has been blessed with and comparing me with him is futile at this current juncture,” he added.

Sithole has accused the state of trying to fight the MDC leader Nelson Chamisa through the youth Assembly. He told Nehanda Radio that the party had recently gone through the formative stage of his Chairmanship and now it is rolling out the implementation phase, “therefore current comparisons defy logic.”

“By looking at the story, I can see the hand of the state all over and their intentions are clear, they want to destroy the people’s project by dividing the party leadership.

“It is trying to create an impression that there are major rifts within the cockpit which is non factual, baseless and deserving condemnation.

“Those against the Presidency of Advocate Nelson Chamisa are working overtime, attempting to destabilize the democratization project led by our President and have unfortunately targeted the Youth Assembly with malice. The Youth Assembly stands united in our support for President Nelson Chamisa.

“So the very same people who are peddling such nonsense must at the very least be courageous enough to bring out their identity. “A person who is too weak to bring his/her identity has no locus standi to speak about the “softness” of those who have chosen to put their lives on the line in the fight for freedom,” Sithole added.

Full Text: Health Minister confirms second COVID-19 case in the country. Fellow Zimbabweans, Today, the 21st March 2020, the National Microbiology Reference Laboratory at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital confirmed yet another case of COVID-19 which brings to two the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Zimbabwe.

This second patient is a 30-year-old male resident of Harare, who had travelled to New York, the United States of America on the 29th February 2020 and returned home in Harare on the 9th of March 2020 via Johannesburg. He started exhibiting mild symptoms (flu-like illness) on the 12th March 2020 which progressively got worse on the 19th March 2020.

He consulted with his doctor who advised him to self-isolate at home. The doctor alerted the local COVID-19 Rapid Response Team that immediately went to assess him and recommended that he continues with the self-isolation at home. Specimens were collected and sent to the Reference lab for testing.

Yesterday evening, he developed severe respiratory distress and after stabilisation at home, was admitted for isolation and clinical management at Wilkins Hospital.

The Reference lab confirmed his COVID-19 positive results early this morning. Our teams are now engaged in contact tracing and as with the first case, are being assisted by the patient himself.

Once again, we call upon everyone to remain calm as we manage these confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Zimbabwe.

In the meantime, I would like to emphasize the need for us to continue practising good personal hygiene.

Wash hands with soap and water frequently or use an alcohol-based hand-rub,
Cover your nose and mouth with tissue paper or flexed elbow when coughing and sneezing
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick, coughing or sneezing.
Avoid unnecessary travel especially to all countries with confirmed cases of COVID-19
I would also like to advise that the Ministry of Health and Child Care will continue to update the nation by issuing official statements regarding the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country as soon as the results are made available by the National Microbiology Reference laboratory.

Finally, let me take this opportunity to appreciate the leadership and guidance being provided by His Excellency The President, Cde. E. D. Mnangagwa in response to this pandemic.

Hon. Dr Obadiah Moyo (MP)
Minister of Health and Child Care

Coronavirus won’t stop the fun as DJ Shimza hosts an online Party! The revolution will not be televised but DJ Shimza‘s online party will surely be available to stream.

DJ Shimza

The recent outbreak of has left the world in a forced self-isolation and limited the number of social gatherings to lower the risks of people getting infected.

DJ Shimza

However, that does not stop the South African entertainment industry.

Dj Shimza is hosting a first ever digital party which will be streaming live on Facebook, 21st March, starting at 18h00. He has featured the Scorpion Kings (Kabza Da Small & Dj Maphorisa), Dj Zinhle, Darque and Black Motion, and Dj PH.

As the online gigs become popular, Black Coffee is one of the few who also did a live stream. It seems the legendary Clap Your Hands hit maker has created a quarantine playlist to keep people all over the world sane at such epidemic times.

As we get to be a bit evolved in these times, we can only predict what the future might look like but this here, is surely one of the things we rate as evolution.

Cde Kangai’s widow wins case against stepdaughter

Cde Kangai’s widow wins case against stepdaughter. Hativagone is Kangai’s eldest daughter from another relationship who in 2013, contested the decision by the Master of the High Court to authorise Miriam to use half of the money generated from the family business.

The late former Zanu PF politburo member, Kumbirai Kangai’s widow, Miriam Kangai has won a High Court case against her stepdaughter, Mara Hativagone over the distribution of the national hero’s estate.

She approached the courts saying Miriam was not entitled to the 50% shareholding in Kangai’s business empire, Lunar Estates. Hativagone, who is also former Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce president, sued the Master of High Court, Eldard Mutasa, for the authorisation which she claimed was made based on fraud.

But the High Court on Tuesday ruled in favour of Miriam. Her lawyer, Vote Muza said the court dismissed Hativagoni’s case and ruled that the national hero’s widow was the major shareholder of the estate.

Judge Justice Jacob Manzunzu ruled that she should retain her 50% shareholding, while the other 50% shares held through Luna Estates, was to be equally shared among the beneficiaries. Kangai’s former Buhera constituency was allotted 10% shares.

“The case Mara Hativagone brought collapsed after she failed to prove that Mrs Kangai was not entitled to 50% shares in Luna Estates,” the lawyer told NewsDay.

“Mrs Kangai made an application for absolution from the instance which was granted by consent of the plaintiff meaning she agreed that with the fact that she had brought a hopeless case. The position ruled by the master in 2013 that Mrs Kangai was a 50% shareholder therefore stands.”

Muza added: “Almost all of the major assets were held through the company Luna Estates and only a few movables left as residue shall be shared equally between Mrs Kangai and the surviving children of which 10% will go to his former Buhera constituency.”

Since the death of the former Zanu PF politburo member, there has been a protracted fight over Kangai’s property between his wife and children who did not want the widow to access anything from the deceased’s estate.

At one time, Hativagoni was reported to the police on allegations of tampering with Luna Estates company registration papers in a bid to elbow the widow from the company.

2 MDC councillors accused of academic fraud to appear in Party’s disciplinary committee

2 MDC councillors accused of academic fraud to appear in the Party’s disciplinary committee. An internal audit conducted by Catholic University of Zimbabwe (CUZ) revealed that the MDC councillors used dishonesty to gain admission into the institution in the Faculty of Commerce, albeit with fake qualifications.

MDC academic fraud scandal, a litmus test for Nelson Chamisa-led party.
MDC councillors Kudzai Kadzombe and Denford Ngadziore will be arraigned before the opposition party’s Accountability and Integrity Panel over allegations of academic fraud, the organ’s chairperson Thabani Mpofu has said.

Insiders say a university worker who allowed them entry through unorthodox means has since been dismissed. Kadzombe and Ngadziore have since been advised that their offers have been terminated until they get the basic requirements and seek readmission. “Will ensure that the matter is placed before the panel,” Mpofu told Zim Morning Post.

The MDC Accountability and Integrity Panel was recently set up to investigate the conduct of business by Harare City Council councillors. The case will be an litmus test to the Nelson Chamisa led party given that Ngadziore is one of Chamisa’s trusted lieutenants.

Residents say the MDC councillors’ alleged academic fraud reflects badly on the MDC-run council and could be among the reasons why service delivery has stalled. The scandal also questions the pair’s integrity and ability to honestly tackle their key roles of oversight, representation and policymaking.

“It shows they were elected on the strength of sloganeering and being right with the party leadership, and not based on their track records of competence,” Harare Residents Trust (HRT) director Precious Shumba said.

“The entry requirements for one to be a Ward Councillor should be based on merit and not the ability to chant party slogans and praise their party leaders in order to get into positions,” he continued.

“Ideally we strongly believe that at least three ordinary levels should be the entry qualifications for one to be considered into elected public office given the amount of work involved in policy making, oversight and facilitation of community development.”

HRT said the lack of a standard criteria to determine who can become a Councillor has created an opportunity for powerful elites in political parties “to manipulate their less educated policymakers by interpreting text for them and guiding them from behind on what policy positions to take and what to be saying in council deliberations.”

HRT said it was important to evaluate the performance of Ngadziore and Kadzombe in terms of their key roles of oversight, representation of the electorate, policymaking and facilitating community development.

“Councillor Kadzombe is the Chairperson of the Environment Management Committee, which is a highly technical committee in terms of its mandate and policy formulation for the City of Harare. If Councillors Kadzombe and Ngadziore so desires to advance themselves, they should not cut corners, but should take the long and painful route of studying to earn their qualifications,” Shumba said.

Mutare closes butcheries for selling uninspected cheap beef. Mutare City Council’s Health Department has raided 29 butcheries and recovered nearly four tonnes of uninspected meat, amid reports that carcasses of cattle attacked by the January disease, foot-and-mouth, anthrax, anaplasmosis, heartwater and theileriosis, had found their way on to the market.

The Manica Post understands that the blitz, which is being conducted in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)’s Anti-Stock Theft Unit, under “Operation Nyama Yabvepi”, is meant to flush out unscrupulous butcheries that were reportedly buying diseased cattle from surrounding farming communities.

Butcheries that were found with uninspected meat were fined $500 each. So far, fines amounting to $4 900 have since been collected by the police. The offenders were also ordered to pay amounts equivalent to 10 percent of the value of the meat recovered from them to cover the costs of burning it.

In Sakubva, Madziro Butchery, represented by Mr Leon Madziro; Sakubva Cash Butchery, owned by Mr Gibson Zimunya; Time Butchery, operated by Mr Gift Mauchaza; Mutendazvose Butchery, run by Mr Tendai Rice; Zvirimugwara Butchery, represented by one Joram; and Saurombe Butchery, run by Mr Obert Chindudzo; were all found selling uninspected meat, which was subsequently confiscated.

Omega Butchery, situated along Mutare’s Herbert Chitepo Street and represented by one Jasi, Zvapano Butchery in Chikanga 2, run by Mr Shepherd Mukawirapamwe, as well as Dangamvura Butchery operated by Ms Eugen Marange and Mr Tauya Fore were also penalised. Contacted for comment, Mr Madziro said.

Morocco makes a dozen arrests over coronavirus fake news

Moroccan police have arrested at least a dozen people for spreading rumours about the coronavirus, including a woman who used her YouTube channel to say the disease did not exist, authorities said on Thursday. Fake news is the first cause of panic among citizens,” said Prime Minister Saad Eddine El-Otmai, comparing the spread of misinformation with the contagion of the disease.

Other people were arrested for opposing strict measures against public gathering, urging people to ignore them, or saying a lockdown had been implemented when it had not. On the same day, the government approved a draft law governing the use of social media, aiming to deter fake news and cyber crimes undermining public order and the economy.

coronavirus

Rights groups have criticised Morocco for what they see as an increasing crackdown on free speech over the past year, including prison terms for people who have expressed dissent on social media.

The North African kingdom has confirmed 61 cases of the coronavirus and two deaths. Most of the sick caught the virus abroad, but it has now also started to transmit within Moroccan cities. The government has closed all mosques, schools, cafes and restaurants, as well as sports and entertainment venues, and has banned all international passenger flights.

The most recent arrest was of a 48-year-old woman who was taken into custody on Wednesday after denying the existence of the coronavirus on her YouTube channel and urging her compatriots to ignore precautionary measures. Another woman, in an audio recording widely shared on WhatsApp, said the tourist hub of Marrakech, one of Morocco’s biggest cities, was under lockdown and warned people not to go there.

COVID-19 lockdown hitting artistes’ pockets hard

COVID-19 lockdown hitting artistes’ pockets hard. The National Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ) in Harare and several artistes including Sungura maestro Alick Macheso cancelled their shows and programmes until further notice.

Several local artists are likely to be hit hard following cancellation of their programmes after President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday banned public gatherings of over 100 people in an effort to curb the spread of the COVID-19 after declaring the pandemic a national disaster.

In a statement, NGZ said the tribute to the late musician Chioniso Maraire dubbed “The Rebel Woman Experience”, which had been scheduled for March 27 has been cancelled.  “Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, the government has instructed that the NGZ closes to the public until further notice,” reads the statement in part.

Macheso’s publicist Tich Makahamadze yesterday said: “We have suspended all our shows until further notice due to coronavirus and we urge the public to get as much information about the pandemic and avoid risky behaviour.”

NGZ Bulawayo director, Butholezwe Nyathi, however yesterday urged artistes affected by the restrictions to take advantage of the situation to produce artworks on the prevention of the outbreak and share them on social media.

His remarks came after artistes on Tuesday held a meeting at the NGZ Bulawayo where they raised concern that they had lost opportunities to generate incomes through international and local performances during this period.

“This is the time for creatives to release music tracks, dramas and videos to raise awareness on the virus. “You don’t need to ask for permission. The information is already there. Just release your products and make them reach the people out there via social media platforms. That’s an opportunity for you,” Nyathi said.

Nkululeko Nkala, an artiste and member of Intwasa, echoed the same sentiments. “At the moment, before anyone takes claim, this is our money guys… This is our money as creatives, so let’s make the best out of it,” he said.

“Let’s stand up, work together to write tracks, dramas and make very good projects out of this. We can also go and educate people in the rural areas through edutainment out of this.”

The ban includes weddings, church gatherings, sporting events and national celebrations and comes in the wake of reports that a United Kingdom tourist who visited Victoria Falls last week, tested positive for COVID-19 upon his return home.

“Government has decided to postpone, curtail or cancel public events, gathering and activities. In that respect, government has postponed the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, all national Independence Day celebrations previously planned,” Mnangagwa said.

He added that resources originally earmarked for the events would be redirected towards strengthening defences against COVID-19. Meanwhile, Ster Kinekor Zimbabwe early this week said it was set to introduce the “In-Cinema seat separation” method in its cinemas across the country as a means to counter the spread of the virus.

The cinemas will be revamped as they place seats away from each other, leaving a space of one chair in-between.

“Your health is our number one concern. After a thorough risk assessment and analysis of the global cinema market, we are implementing ‘In-cinema seat separation’ as part of measures to encourage effective social distancing in cinemas, be sure to adhere to prompts effected,” Ster Kinekor said on their Facebook platform.

Prophet Bushiri robbed me: Says gospel star Solly Moholo as he releases new song

Gospel star Solly Moholo has reemerged after a brief hiatus from music with the release of a new song that denounces controversial self-proclaimed prophet, Shepherd Bushiri. The song, which was announced along with a video advising the public on how to deal with the coronavirus epidemic, is called Ke moSione 9-9.

Two years ago, Moholo, who gained fame through his Zion Christian Church-aligned mokhukhu gospel music, announced that he was leaving the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) for Bushiri’s Enlightened Christian Centre.

“In him, I saw how big God is. He is an amazing angel of God. He will help me spiritually and give me support to deal with my challenges,” Moholo told Sowetan in a past interview. Nobody is like Bushiri on this Earth. God has chosen him, I saw power in him and all of us want to be close to the chosen ones,” he added.

Prophet Bushiri and Solly Moholo

Moholo has, over the years, reportedly been at odds with senior leaders of the ZCC church for various reasons, such as his refusal to stop wearing the church’s uniform on stage and to stop performing the church’s trademark mokhukhu dance.

Although Moholo officially denounced Bushiri last year, he took the opportunity, once again, to promote the single amid the coronavirus panic. The song is also addressed to ZCC church leader Bishop Barnabas Lekganyane whose forgiveness Moholo asked for.

“Phuthego lengtshwarele, Bushiri ong ropile. Ke moSione 99,” [Can the church forgive me, Bushiri has robbed me. I’m a Zion Christian Church member through and through] sings Moholo. Moholo quickly began trending on social media on Friday morning after various social media users listened to the song and marvelled at its lyrics. The song is reportedly available on all streaming platforms.

Tongai Moyo rebel Shiga Shiga rejoins Utakataka Express. The musician confirmed the developments yesterday and said he was still writing and recording his own songs which are being played on air.

Nomadic Congolese chanter and choreographer Gift “Shiga Shiga” Katulika is now back at Peter Moyo’s Utakataka Express Band as stage manager although he is still pursuing his own solo musical career, NewsDay Life & Style has learnt.

Shiga Shiga recorded his latest single, Zvinotamba Zvega last month soon after re-joining Utakataka Express following the collapse of his own band last year.

“I am back at Utakataka as a stage manager, but I am also recording my own songs which are receiving airplay on our local radio stations, with my latest being Zvinotamba Zvega, which I released late February. I am doing this to beef up my salary from Utakataka,” he said.

Shiga Shiga has three albums to his name — Two Years Later, Zvirikwamuri and Basa Ndakapihwa — and has often played some of the songs at Utakataka Express shows.
Utakataka Express band manager, Brilliant Ndlovu, confirmed that Shiga Shiga was back in the fold and they did not have problems with him recording his own songs.

“We are working again with Shiga and we do not have any problems yet even with his recordings. We allow him to do so since he wants to maintain his name on air,” Ndlovu said.

Shiga Shiga has worked with a number of artistes including Beverly Sibanda, Energy Mutodi, Brian Samaita and Gift Amuli.

Renowned entertainer and socialite Zodwa Wabantu is not taking any chances in her quest to make sure that she is protected from the novel COVID-19. She has issued conditions to those who would want to get in contact with her, you have to sanitise your hands if you want to touch my punani!

Her fans are in the habbit of reaching out to touch the pantless entertainer’s punani while she’s on stage, but she has now attached some conditions that are to be observed before one stretches a hand to touch her, she called on her followers to touch her with clean hands in the wake of the coronavirus. She is thinking health and ‘safety first,’ “Whoever wants to touch my punani will have to sanitise their hands first. No sanitiser, no punani,” she said.

As Zodwa doesn’t wear underwear, it means she performs that way and even when she attends the church services she does so with her punani laid bare, merely covered by the black tight skirt she was wearing. Zodwa, whose real name is Zodwa Libram is a hot sensation, wherever she performs fans go crazy with many reaching their hands to her, cheering and wanting to feel her punani. Speaking to Daily Sun, she revealed her forthcoming gig set for 10 April 2020 at Umhlanga Rocks in KwaZulu-Natal.

Zodwa Wabantu

While she is very aware about the virus that has seen many shows and festivals either being postponed or cancelled, Zodwa said she is forced not to cancel her gigs which are her only source of survival. As a precautionary measure, she said she is not going to perform for a big crowd.

“I was told people who will be at the event are not more than 100, and that’s why I agreed. I also want to be safe,” she said. As the number of reported positive cases increase in the country, the s.e.xy entertainer called on the Mzansi people to stay safe and to refrain from s.e.x until the virus was gone.

“No s.e.x while there is corona. We don’t want to infect our loved ones,” she said. She once had a date that did not go down well, but now she has another man, Vusi is the man on her arm and Zodwa said she and her Ben 10 usually poked three to four times a day. But we also have to stay away from sex. We want to be safe.
