President Barack Obama says the nation will never forget the lives of those killed in the September 11 attacks.

Obama said at a Pentagon memorial service that he is inspired by the resilience of the victims’ families. He quoted Scripture: “Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you. Write them on the table of your heart.”

Obama also praised America’s diversity and urged Americans not to let their enemies divide them. He called the day “difficult”, but one that “reveals the love and faithfulness in your hearts and in the heart of our nation”.

At the White House, Obama observed a moment of silence at 08:46 EDT – the time the first hijacked plane hit the north tower of New York City’s World Trade Center.

Female prisoners run riot at Chikurubi Lynda Masarira ‘transferred to solitary confinement

Female prisoners on Friday evening ran riot at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, protesting against bad treatment by jail officials, according to an activist group, #Tajamaka.

Sylvanos Mudzvova, a member of the #Tajamuka publicity team, they learnt of the riot when they visited the prison where numerous protesters arrested and charged recently are being held.

He said anti-riot police had to be called in to quell the rebellion, with some of the female prisoners, among them Linda Masarira who has been languishing in prison for more than two months, being transferred to solitary confinement in a male section.

“We received a phone call on Friday evening about the disturbances and were at Chikurubi by 8am on Saturday.

zimbabwe-female-prisoners

We noticed that the female section was closed and got information from prison guards that female prisoners had rioted and were badly beaten up by riot police,” said Mudzvova.

As a result of the riot, he added, the prison could not process bail for protesters who had been granted freedom by the courts on Friday, among them Kerina Gweshe, another protester.

Most of the protesters were arrested recently during a march for electoral reforms.

Mudzvova said they were barred from seeing their colleagues.

The female prisoners reportedly sang revolutionary songs and denounced the judiciary for alleged bias against protesters.

#Tajamuka has since July been participating in demonstrations against President Robert Mugabe and his government, resulting in scores of its members being arrested and taken to court.

Deadly chaos threatens Zimbabwe – Zanu-PF vs The Poor Citizens

Zimbabweans should hold on for an even rougher ride in the coming days and weeks, as the battle lines have been drawn anew between a panicking President Robert Mugabe and his ruling Zanu PF on one side, and long-suffering citizens on the other — who defiantly plan to take to the streets again, to the chagrin of the regime.

A worried senior Zanu PF official who spoke to the Daily News on Sunday yesterday warned that “blood could flow” in the country after agitated civil servants, pressure groups and opposition parties served notice on Friday of another pending nationwide shutdown, while the ruling party threatened to deal with all of them severely.

“We should all be very worried by how quickly and badly things are deteriorating again in the country, with neither side willing to give an inch.

As things stand, there is grave danger that blood could flow soon,” the concerned bigwig who maintains that he is “non-aligned” in Zanu PF’s seemingly unstoppable factional and succession wars said.

The senior Zanu PF official made his comments after Mugabe delivered another chilling warning to pro-democracy activists and opposition parties on Friday while addressing his party’s central committee in Harare.

The increasingly frail nonagenarian said ominously that he would not fold his hands and allow protests to continue in the country, even as such mass action is allowed under the Constitution.

“The MDC has apparently now adopted a policy of violence … we warn them that they are playing a dangerous game, a very dangerous game.

“They are bragging that they want to take their violent demonstrations to rural areas but again I say let them be warned that when we move against them they should not cry foul saying there is no more democracy in the country.

“Some of them (opposition leaders) have never been held in cells eating very little food in a filthy place before they are even tried in court. If they have ears to hear, let them hear.

“Let the opposition parties and all those angling for chaos and mayhem be warned that our patience has run out. Government will take very strong measures against any political party, organisation or individuals who perpetrate violent demonstrations,” the angry Mugabe said.

But as the 92-year-old — the only leader Zimbabweans have known since the country gained its independence from Britain in April 1980 — was promising to crush and jail all dissenters, miffed civil servants were threatening to hold another massive strike following government’s decision to retrench workers and freeze bonuses.

At the same time, and riding on the spirit of defiance currently sweeping the country, 18 opposition parties coalescing under the banner of the National Electoral Reform Agenda (Nera) — also announced that they would hold countrywide protests, to press for much-needed reforms ahead of the country’s eagerly-anticipated 2018 national elections.

Nera organising committee chairperson, Joelson Mugari, told the Daily News on Sunday that they had already notified Zimbabwe’s stretched police that they would mount demonstrations in all the country’s 210 constituencies on Saturday.

“We will hold demonstrations in all the country’s 210 constituencies on September 17 because we realise that the police want to deploy all their resources in the capital and thereby cause violence in the process. So, we know they will be stretched this time around,” Mugari said.

However, he added that last week’s High Court ruling, which annulled a recent ban by police on demonstrations in central Harare, had “nothing to do” with their pending protests.

“Remember the ruling was only about central Harare. We could still have held our protests in Kuwadzana, Epworth, Dzivaresekwa, Chitungwiza and other areas that were not affected by the ban. So even if the State was going to go back to court and seek to have the ban re-instated, our protests will still go ahead,” Mugari said.

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC also vowed to continue with its protests until its demands were met, despite Mugabe accusing the party of leading its partners in Nera to allegedly foment violence in the country.

“We have entered the homestretch. Victory is certain, defeat is not on the agenda, and surrender is not an option. Mugabe is now virtually a toothless bulldog. He cannot stop the tidal wave of change in the country. He is in the political departure lounge on his way out of power. That’s for sure.

“The political situation is very volatile but no civil war will break out in Zimbabwe. The Zanu PF regime is broke, divided and clueless. It’s collapsing. This is the end game. It’s irreversible.

“Very soon, a new political dispensation will be ushered in Zimbabwe,” a buoyant MDC spokesman Obert Gutu said.

Human Rights Watch senior researcher for Africa, Dewa Mavhinga, said opposition political parties should call “Mugabe’s bluff” and go ahead with their planned peaceful protests for key electoral reforms.

“We are under a new constitutional dispensation, so it cannot be business as usual for Mugabe and his government to disregard human rights and the rule of law without facing resistance and demands for justice and accountability.

“If Mugabe dares to crush the opposition, then he must know that dictatorship has a witness. The world is watching and will not be silent in the face of repression and abuse. Zimbabweans must never fear to exercise their constitutional rights, ultimately justice will prevail,” Mavhinga told the Daily News On Sunday.

On its part, radical pressure group Tajamuka/Sesijikile, which has had running battles with police in Harare, said it would hold protests in the capital every week from now onwards, until their demands were also met.

“From now onwards we are going to follow the Constitution as it is. So, we are going to escalate demonstrations. But going forward we are not going to bother to seek police clearance since the supreme law of the land does not require us to do so,” its spokesman Hardlife Mudzingwa said.

Zimbabwe is currently deep in the throes of a debilitating economic crisis which has given rise to waves of protests and riots by ordinary citizens who blame public sector corruption and the government’s policies for the rot.

Since the economy began experiencing serious turbulence, including banks running out of cash, this has put the government under growing pressure as angry Zimbabweans have mounted seemingly unending demonstrations.

Mugabe and his panicking government recently tried to contain the protests by invoking a ban on demonstrations, but this was rejected by the courts which ruled that the decree was unconstitutional.

Presenting his mid-term fiscal policy statement last week, Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa scrapped bonuses for all government workers as part of a raft of measures which include taxing civil servants’ allowances and cutting salaries of senior officials.

The emergency measures were announced as civil service salaries and bonuses have been gobbling virtually the whole national budget, worsening the country’s deepening liquidity and cash shortages.

But civil servants’ leaders, including vocal teachers’ lobby groups, said the government had acted illegally when it announced the measures.

“The bottom line is that the Progressive Teacher’s Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) says no to this nonsense by the government. Comrades, it’s either we eat or we are eaten. This is the time to fight. If we let this go on we will not have salaries in October,” said a fuming PTUZ secretary-general Raymond Majongwe.

“The little we are receiving is not enough and you want to take that from us. If it means we are ending up in prison so be it. We have to stand up.

“This is a call for anyone who cares. We are going to protest and protest violently.”

“The government has shown us that they don’t care about us anymore. They agreed to cut our allowances by between five to 20 percent. They will also dismiss 25 000 workers, and Chinamasa also suspended bonuses for 2016 and 2017.

“It is unheard of that a government cuts salaries, especially allowances that are a result of collective bargaining agreements,” he added.

A 48-year-old woman was found dead in her home in Atteridgeville, near Pretoria, after she was stabbed in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela said it is believed that the woman was stabbed by her 57-year-old husband who also allegedly stabbed their 21-year-old daughter.

“She has been admitted to the Brits Hospital,” Makhubela said.

According to police, the man then fled with their eight-year-old son, but later handed the child over to a family friend.

“The suspect had told the family that he will be handing himself over to police, but he has not done that yet,” Makhubela added.

A manhunt is currently underway.

Police have also urged the public to help should they have any information on the whereabouts of the man.

Kasukuwere Prophet Magaya stands saga turns bloody

The issue of residential stands that were earmarked for youths, but were reportedly sold to Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries founder Prophet Walter Magaya by Zanu-PF national commissar Saviour Kasukuwere turned nasty on Saturday after Zanu-PF Youth League commissar Innocent Hamandishe was manhandled by youths in Chitungwiza who accused him of trying to cover up the scandal.

The youths accused Hamandishe of being used by Kasukuwere as a front to pacify them over the sale of the stands earmarked for them in Harare’s Chishawasha B area. During a meeting at Pagomba in Chitungwiza on Saturday, Hamandishe had to run for his life after he allegedly failed to explain circumstances surrounding the issue.

kasukuwere

Sources said district chairpersons were offered at least 10 stands per individual to buy their support and not to question Kasukuwere’s dealings. This, according to sources, was going to be done through a provincial political commissar who was only identified as Chilinjali who convened Saturday’s meeting.

The district chairpersons, however, could not have any of this and asked for Kasukuwere to come and address them. Sources said: “The meeting was called under the guise that they wanted to get names of beneficiaries of the stands. The youths however, pointed from the onset that the President had pronounced himself on the issue and they wanted clarity from the national political commissar (Kasukuwere).

“All hell broke loose when Hamandishe was called to clarify the matter. Initially he refused to come and when he eventually came, his responses were not convincing. Some of the youths lost their temper and concluded that Hamandishe wanted to shield Kasukuwere and they manhandled him and slapped in the face.”

Another source said: “After Hamandishe was manhandled, we agreed that we should meet on Monday and map the way forward. We felt that the issue should be addressed at the highest level because Chilinjali wanted to cheat us. He called a meeting on a different agenda only to smuggle other issues in the middle of the meeting.”

Hamandishe could not be reached for a comment but the Zanu-PF youth league provincial chair for Harare province Edison Takataka said: “I was not aware of that meeting but I am told that the youths asked for clarification on the issue of stands and that is when Hamandishe was called.

“As youths, we really want that land and most of the people who were mentioned in your last report have plenty of properties and I think people should not be that greedy. “As far as we are concerned, our land is still there and our leader (Kudzanayi Chipanga) said they are still working on the paperwork and I am sure that is what is making some of the delays before allocation.”

Kasukuwere was recently grilled by President Mugabe over the stands following reports that he had sold the land to Prophet Magaya during last week’s Politburo meeting.

Documents seen by The Herald showed Kasukuwere gave some of the stands in question to his younger brother Tongai and close associates such as House of Assembly representatives for Kuwadzana Betty Kaseke and Harare South Shadreck Mashayamombe among others.

Mugabe has pushed Zim back into colonisation and its time for change : Mujuru

Zimbabwe People First (ZPF) leader Joice Mujuru said President Robert Mugabe’s rule has eroded the gains of the country’s hard-fought independence and his attitude towards people is as bad as the former colonisers.

Addressing her supporters at a rally at Phelandaba Stadium in Gwanda yesterday, Mujuru said Mugabe and his Zanu PF government have shown a ruthless streak towards people which was not consistent with the values and ideals of independence.

“We left Zanu PF because what we had fought for had been reneged on,” said Mujuru.

“Many people were maimed, lost their lives during the liberation war, some were detained and suffered to liberate this country.

joice-mujuru“In 1980, we thought finally we were free from white minority rule but sooner than later there was a conflict between Zanu and Zapu before unity.

“But from that unity nothing came out as Zanu PF started reneging on its promises,” added Mujuru.

Mujuru was sacked from Zanu PF in the run-up to the 2014 December congress and untested charges of plotting to assassinate Mugabe.

The respected former vice president was fired alongside high-profile Zanu PF officials who included Didymus Mutasa and Rugare Gumbo who are now part of her team at the ZPF.

I was persecuted because I had indicated on a number of occasions that what we fought for was no longer a reality as we were back again to that era where we were oppressed,” Mujuru told her supporters.

“There is no more unity in this country. Why should people fight when the government has got a duty to make sure that its citizens have a better life through economic development?”

Mugabe is battling to contain growing civil unrest as ordinary Zimbabweans protest his disastrous government.

Mujuru and her colleagues within the National Electoral Reform Agenda (Nera) are planning to hold massive demonstrations in 210 constituencies this weekend over outstanding electoral reforms.

Yesterday, she bemoaned lack of progress in Matabeleland South despite its rich gold deposits and being the hub of cattle ranching.

She blamed Mugabe for marginalising the region while turning to what she said was blind eye to corruption involving Zanu PF bigwigs.

“Corruption is all over, imagine we have an individual owning a 52-bedroomed house, where did you get that money when everybody else is suffering?

“Right now, we have a country that doesn’t know where $15 billion went to as if it’s just a small amount.

“What kind of a government is that?” she asked rhetorically.

Msipa warns arrogant Mugabe to stop using brute force to crush dissent.

FORMER Zanu PF politburo member and Midlands governor, Cephas Msipa  has warned that President Robert Mugabe risks “being consumed by unrestrained public anger” if he continues using brute force to crush dissent.

Msipa said at the weekend with the country experiencing a wave of protests over a collapsed economy, the onus was on Mugabe to reach out to his rivals, who are demanding accountability and proper governance, for a truce and abet anarchy.

“This time, Mugabe has to show statesmanship and rise above partisan politics,” he said.
“He has to call his rivals or those opposing him and discuss Zimbabwe. Pride will take Zimbabwe nowhere, but to more suffering. It is not fiction that Zimbabweans are suffering; it is a fact that needs redress

msipa-cephasThis idea of selfish politics will not help at all. I have travelled and wherever I go, I am asked, is this the Zimbabwe you fought for? It’s not. We never fought for violent protests, we never fought for selfish leadership, but we fought for selfless leadership that puts Zimbabwe ahead of personal interests,” he said.

The former Midlands governor’s warning comes after Mugabe last week threatened vindictive action against opposition leaders and pressure groups, who are piling pressure on him to step down and allow a transitional government to take over.

“The MDC and its supporters are playing a very dangerous game. We also understand that they are planning to terrorise the rural areas in the mistaken belief that they can intimidate and harass our supporters, let them be warned they cannot win the war. They should not cry foul when we go for them,” Mugabe told a Zanu PF central committee meeting last Friday.

Due to a collapsing economy witnessed by rising unemployment, cash crisis and severe food shortages, Zimbabweans have, almost daily, resorted to protest marches demanding improved social delivery.

“The people are not asking for things that are not genuine, they are demanding bread and butter issues and it is up to this government to respond to them rather than send teargas and water cannons,” Msipa said.

“Those things won’t put food on the table, but cause more anger and frustration and turn into more protests. It is up to Mugabe, as a statesman, to call all political parties for dialogue to solve these challenges.”

Highlanders fight back to complete double over Dynamos

Dutchman Errol Akbay kept his fine record against Dynamos intact when he completed a double over his counterpart Lloyd Mutasa as he fought back in dramatic fashion to win this massive Castle Lager Premier Soccer League showdown at Barbourfields yesterday.

Akbay somewhat gave Mutasa a Baptism of fire when he handed the former Dynamosmidfielder a 2-0 defeat in a Week 8 future on May 28 at Rufaro.

Dynamos had until then maintained a 10-year dominance over Bosso and Mutasa was in May presiding over his third game after replacing out of sorts Portuguese gaffer Paulo Jorge Silva.

Yesterday Mutasa appeared to have been on course to avenge for that loss when Masimba Mambare thrust the Glamour Boys into the lead in the first half but it was three minutes of misery for Dynamos that saw Highlanders score two goals through headers by Tendai Ndlovu and Ralph Matema to cancel out that DeMbare advantage.

Ndlovu scored in the 76th minute from an Erick Mudzingwa cross before the seemingly ageless Matema who had come in for an ineffective Allen Gahadzikwa hit the back of the net from a cross by the outstanding central defender Peter Muduhwa.

It was against run of play and with Highlanders seemingly in control of the situation Mambare stunned Barbourfields when he scored with a simple tap in off an Obey Mwerahari header in the 28th minute.

The goal exposed Highlanders’ defensive shortcomings as they failed to deal with a harmless looking in swinger from the right. The match kicked off at a cracking pace with Dynamos calling the shots and as early as the first minute Muduhwa made a crucial save clipping the ball off the legs of left wingback Ocean Mushure who had overlapped.

On the 10th minute young strikers Nhlanhla Ndlovu and Prince Dube combined beautifully with Dube bringing in a dipping volley that saw Ndlovu going airborne but his header went wide.

Three minutes later, Denver Mukamba broke loose from the centre circle and raced towards goal with Honest Moyo chasing. Mukamba let loose a scorcher from the edge of the box which however, found Ariel Sibanda at his best.

A minute later Prince Dube beat three Dynamos defenders and took a crack at goal which Warriors international goalkeeper Tatenda Mukuruva punched for a corner. In the 17th minute the Prince and Nhlanhla combination was at work again as Bosso almost went ahead

honest-moyo-vs-masimba-mambare

Highlanders supporters were ejected off their seats after Rahman Kutsanzira’s cracker from outside the box hit the upright post with Mukuruva completely beaten. The home side continued to enjoy the lion’s share of the proceedings but failed to turn their dominance into goals as Dynamos seemed content with just holding back.

It was therefore a shock to even the Dynamos supporters when Mambare propelled the visitors into the lead in the 28th minute. The goal took some steam off Highlanders for a few minutes, probably still stung by the unexpected lead by their opponents.

The second half had no major action near the goal as both coaches made substitutions in a bid to change the game into their favour. Matema came in for Allen Gahadzikwa in the 58th minute while Lloyd Mutasa pulled out his son Wisdom and brought in Tichaona Chipunza in the 66th minute.

Amahlolanyama were back in the game in the 76th minute with a powerful header by defender Ndlovu. When the goal came, the stadium erupted and some fans were probably still celebrating when the second goal arrived three minutes later.

By then the home side were totally in control of the proceedings and could have added a third had Matema composed himself in the 84th minute when he came face to face with Mukuruva but failed to beat the Warriors goalkeeper.

Dynamos then laid siege in the Highlanders half as they desperately sought an equaliser that could have at least forced a share of the spoils. Instead it was the home fans who were breathing a huge sigh of relief when referee Nduna Nkosana blew for full time. Nkosana had a firm grip of the match.

“It’s heartbreaking to lose to Highlanders, my boys lost concentration at a crucial time,” said Mutasa. Akbay was full of praise for his players for a good show. “We played good football although that mistake cost us a goal. We needed this win to keep pressure on the leaders,” said Akbay.

Teams:

Highlanders: Ariel Sibanda, Tendai Ngulube, Peter Muduhwa, Tendai Ndlovu, Honest Moyo, Erick Mudzingwa, Rahman Kutsanzira (Gabriel Nyoni 89th min), Allen Gahadzikwa (Ralph Matema 58th min), Nhlanhla Ndlovu, Prince Dube, Simon Munawa (King Nadolo 67th min)

Dynamos: Tatenda Mukuruva, Godknows Murwira, Obey Mwerahari, Marshal Machazane (Rodrick Mutuma 69th min), Ocean Mushure, Stephen Alimenda, Denver Mukamba, Dominic Mukandi, Wisdom Mutasa (Tichaona Chipunza 66th min)), Masimba Mambare (Valentine Ndaba 77th min), Takunda Sadiki

Zesa owed $1bn sues 200 local authorities state and private enterprises

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company, which is battling to recover over $1 billion in unpaid power bills, has approached the High Court suing at least 200 local authorities, State enterprises and private companies.

Prominent individuals are also appearing in the court cases filed by ZETDC. On the list of debtors are at least 40 State and local authorities who are being sued for a combined $25 million.

Summons were issued from January this year to date and the cases are proceeding through the High Court in Harare. While some defaulters were yet to be sued and others are on payment plans, the 200 have proved to be bad debtors.

ZESA public relations manager Mr Fullard Gwasira confirmed the implementation of a debt recovery strategy, saying many others were still to be taken to court. Mr Gwasira said stern credit control measures like lawsuits were ZESA’s last resort in cases where the creditors are not cooperating in terms of payment plans.

“Litigation for us is the last option. We believe in dialogue and those who come forward and negotiate payment plans are not sued. “There are many cases that are settled outside court because we do not enjoy suing our clients. If the debtors cooperate, we will simply agree on favourable terms,” he said.

Mr Gwasira said the credit control measures were being applied in the spirit of ensuring the success of Government’s economic blueprint, Zim-Asset. The power utility, after unsuccessfully trying other remedies, approached the High Court seeking an order compelling the defaulters to pay up.

fed_up_with_zesa

The sued defaulters owe the power utility amounts ranging from $13 000 to $6,9 million each. ZETDC engaged the services of three different law firms, Chinganga and Company, Baera and Company as well as Chihambakwe, Mtizwa and Partners to sue the debtors.

Sable Chemicals Industries is locked up in a legal wrangle with ZETDC in which it is challenging a $6 940 069 electricity bill. Chinhoyi Municipality is defending a claim of $5 863 396, which is being claimed together with interest. Zvishavane Town Council is also on the list with a bill of $4 646 348.

Chegutu Municipality was slapped with a $2 126 836 suit and the case is still pending at the High Court. ZETDC is claiming $1 006 133 together with interest from Shurugwi Town Council while the Municipality of Marondera is also in trouble over a bill amounting to $2 024 388.

NetOne Cellular is defending a $1 174 269 lawsuit while Air Zimbabwe has been sued for $873 094. Mutare City Council and Chitungwiza Municipality are being sued over $1 129 227 and $707 455 respectively by the power company.

The Forestry Commission is being sued for a combined $163 722,86 while Zvimba Rural District Council is being sued for $344 150. Non-governmental organisations were not left out as Jairos Jiri Association owes $220 201.

Prominent individuals like politician Mr David Butau and Dr Gideon Gono of Lunar Chickens are being sued for $18 289 and $87 000 respectively.

Most of the debtors are contesting the billing systems saying the figures claimed by the power utility were unreasonable and strange to them.

ZESA borrowed $500 million for the expansion of the Kariba power station while creditors owed it in excess of $1 billion

85 year old burns ex girlfriend in house after she dumps him for another man

An 85-year-old man in Hurungwe is facing two counts of murder after he allegedly burnt down a hut in which his former girlfriend, her child and new lover were sleeping. Alfred Salamani of 56 Hill Top outside Karoi, appeared before Karoi magistrate Mr Obedience Matare last Thursday, facing two counts of murder and one of attempted murder. It is alleged that after discovering that his former girlfriend Rugare Kahlamezi had a new lover, Vimbai Charumbira, Salamani hatched a plan of revenge.

Around 9pm on August 20, prosecutor Mr Webster Dimingu alleged that Salamani went to Kahlamezi’s homestead at Protea Farm in possession of a box of matches and petrol in a 1,25 litre container.

It is alleged that after hiding the petrol and matches under a tree close to the homestead, Salamani closely monitored Kahlamezi and Charumbira’s movements. It is alleged that after Kahlamezi, her daughter Faith Chateya and Charumbira had retired to their bedroom hut, Salamani tied the door from outside using a strand of wire and sprinkled petrol at the door and thatched roof before setting the hut alight.

Under the cover of darkness, it is alleged, Salamani left, leaving the inferno engulfing the three. Although Vimbai managed to escape with serious burns, Kahlamezi and her daughter Faith died in the inferno.

A post-mortem done at Karoi Hospital showed that the two died of asphyxia. Police have since recovered the container and the box of matches used by Salamani during the commission of the crime. Mr Matare advised Salamani to apply for bail at the High Court.

Chinese Firm pays workers with bricks

MORE than 100 workers from Chinese building firm Golden Bricks who have gone for eight months without receiving their salaries are being paid in bricks.

According to workers at the Dzivaresekwa-based firm, their employer has been paying them part salaries since November last year.

An employee who spoke to the Weekend Post said the brick firm pays its employees $100 via mobile money platforms.

He said currently Golden Bricks owed employees more than $1 900 in salary arrears each, despite selling bricks daily.

bricks“Last year, management resolved — without consulting us — that they would pay some of our outstanding salaries with bricks. Their deal was that anyone with less than $1 000 in salary arrears would be combined with another employee so that they are given 10 000 bricks to sell and pocket the proceeds as their salaries,” he said.

Another employee said security can check out more than five truckloads of bricks a day but management still insists there is no money to pay salaries.

He argued that the bricks that are transported out of the yard are fully paid for as the client presents a receipt at the gate before leaving the premise

10 000 bricks cost $1 000 at the firm. Seven truckloads every day are enough to pay us all our salaries yet they do not want. When employees engage management on the issue, they are met with hostility. Only recently, two workers were fired for demanding their dues,” he said.

A union representative only identified as Musiringofa said the problem with the brick manufacturing firm started last year when they started shifting pay dates.

He said when workers complained through the Brick and Clay Union, it was agreed that the firm would pay in bricks once as an alternative but the company saw it as a loophole to continue.

Musiringofa said upon shutdown in 2015, workers were being paid 1 000 bricks for every $100 owed to an employee.

“Since we started production in March this year, Golden Bricks has not paid full salaries. They are supposed to pay after every fortnight but so far they are eight payments in arrears.
Apart from that, the working conditions are also very bad as some workers do not have contracts of employment,” he said.

The unionist added that Golden Bricks management has even gone to the extent of telling employees they will only be paid if the economic conditions in the country become favourable.

The human resources manager identified as Mupopa was not available for comment as his mobile phone went unanswered

Former Prime Minister David Cameron is standing down as an MP, triggering a by-election in his Witney seat.

Mr Cameron said he had “thought about this long and hard over the summer”, deciding it was “the right thing to do to stand down”.

He added: “In my view, in modern politics, with the circumstances of my resignation, it isn’t really possible to be a proper backbench MP.

david-cameroon“As a former Prime Minister, everything you do will become a big distraction, a big diversion from what the Government needs to do for our country.”

Mr Cameron said he would continue to live in the constituency and support local causes, adding “but obviously I’m going to have to start to build a life outside Westminster”.

“I hope I’ll continue to contribute in terms of public service and of course contribute to this country I love so much.”

He said he had spoken to current Prime Minister Theresa May about his decision and she had been “very supportive”.

In March, he had said he intended to stand again for Witney, telling the BBC: “I love being MP for Witney and am very keen to continue”.

Mr Cameron, 49, was first elected as Witney’s MP in 2001, becoming Conservative leader after the 2005 General Election and entering No 10 as coalition Prime Minister in 2010.

He resigned as Prime Minister on 24 June this year, just hours after Britain voted to leave the European Union.

Not even shocking threats and killing us will save Mugabe: Morgan Tsvangirai

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, angered by President Robert Mugabe’s shocking threats and vitriolic attacks on him and the MDC on Friday, has bluntly told the increasingly frail nonagenarian to prepare for the end of his time in high office.

Speaking to the Daily News in an exclusive interview at the weekend, the former prime minister in the government of national unity also warned Mugabe not to behave as if he was “immortal” — adding that not even the arrest and killing of dissenters would rescue the nonagenarian and Zanu PF from the wrath of long-suffering Zimbabweans.

“We have all seen the worst of Mugabe and Zanu PF over the years, and if there is one man who has witnessed this first hand it is me. I have been beaten, thrown into jail on trumped-up charges and have been tried for treason. My wife also died in unclear circumstances.

“I have quietly tried to put up with Mugabe’s hurtful bragging about beating and harassing me all these years, but it is enough now. We have always known that we are up against a dictator whose only preoccupation is the retention of power by any means necessary.

“Zimbabweans know that Mugabe will resort to violence when challenged peacefully and democratically. Let me warn him that he can continue to beat us, or even kill us and do all sorts of things, as is his natural tendency, but what is inevitable is that he is not immortal,” the usually unflappable Tsvangirai said.

The former trade union leader, who defeated Mugabe hands down in the hotly-disputed 2008 elections, also narrated “the countless times” that Mugabe and Zanu PF had attempted to “destroy me politically and otherwise”, to no avail — including arraigning him on trumped up treason charges which were eventually thrown out by the courts.

He also recounted how on March 11, 2007, he had been arrested “for no reason at all” and left for dead after he was bludgeoned mercilessly by police while in custody, when authorities crushed a prayer meeting that had been organised in the Harare high density suburb of Highfield.

A well-known cobbler and MDC activist, Gift Tandare, was murdered in cold blood during the sickening assaults, which all later culminated in the subsequent intervention by Sadc.

Mugabe — the only leader Zimbabweans have known since the country gained its independence from Britain in April 1980 — on Friday ominously promised to crush and jail all dissenters, including leaders of political parties coalescing under the banner of the National Electoral Reform Agenda (Nera).

The warning came in the wake of a High Court ruling which quashed a recent police ban on protests in the capital, with Mugabe telling the Zanu PF central committee that the MDC and pro-democracy groups were playing “a dangerous game” by agitating for reforms and change in the country.

“The MDC has apparently now adopted a policy of violence … we warn them that they are playing a dangerous game, a very dangerous game.

“They are bragging that they want to take their violent demonstrations to rural areas but again I say let them be warned that when we move against them they should not cry foul saying there is no more democracy in the country.

tsvangirai

Some of them (opposition leaders) have never been held in cells eating very little food in a filthy place before they are even tried in court. If they have ears to hear, let them hear.

“Let the opposition parties and all those angling for chaos and mayhem be warned that our patience has run out. Government will take very strong measures against any political party, organisation or individuals who perpetrate violent demonstrations,” Mugabe said.

But Tsvangirai told the Daily News that Mugabe’s threats betrayed the “obvious fact that the man is panicking and running out of options”.

“The jails are now not for criminals but for us … I know his recent outburst where he said that I was organising people against him is a result of his anger at being rejected by the people of Zimbabwe since we defeated him in 2008. There is no doubt that we have shaken Zanu PF’s hegemony since we were formed.

“And the fact is that the people are organising themselves against him and Zanu PF.

“They want change, not only with regards to Mugabe, but the whole system that has led us to the pits where we are today. They want a new leadership that is able to define a new vision and promising future for the country,” he thundered.

“There is also no doubt that there is a new national convergence by Zimbabweans of all persuasions, including war veterans, workers, students, vendors and so on — on the need to democratise our country and create local and international confidence.

“Mugabe will be foolish to dismiss this as a far-fetched dream … and we will not resort to overthrowing him illegally to achieve change and democracy in the country.

“But I can promise him that we will not stop demanding what rightfully belongs to the people,” the emotionally-charged Tsvangirai added.

Since the country’s economy began experiencing serious turbulence, including witnessing banks running out of cash, Mugabe’s government has come under growing pressure as angry ordinary Zimbabweans have mounted seemingly unending demonstrations.

This coming weekend, 18 political parties will hold rolling protests in 210 constituencies around the country, despite Mugabe’s threats.

Two weeks ago, heavily-armed police ruthlessly crushed another Nera demo before they invoked a controversial ban which was later ruled unconstitutional by the High Court.

Mugabe has also recently made threats against the judiciary, in an ill-advised rant which was widely seen as trying to sway the Bench to his side in light of the growing protests against Zanu PF’s misrule of the past 36 years

Mugabe opponents vow mass protests despite warning – We are going ahead with the demonstrations

Zimbabwean opposition parties vowed Monday to stage mass protests to press for electoral reforms, unfazed by veteran President Robert Mugabe’s threat to increase a crackdown on organisers of anti-government protests.

We are going ahead with the demonstrations,” said Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) spokesman Douglas Mwonzora, speaking on behalf of opposition parties under the coalition of the National Electoral Reform Agenda.

“This is the demonstration that we are doing on the 17th. We are going ahead with or without their blessing or permission. We have the law in our favour and we are not going to negotiate the law with Mr Mugabe.”

Jacob Ngarivhuma, leader of fringe political outfit Transform Zimbabwe, said: “This Saturday we are organising 210 demonstrations throughout the country to force the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to accept reforms.

“We are going to continue fighting. This is the language they understand

mdc-youth-protest-police

The planned protests follow a two–week police ban on street protests in the capital which was over turned by the high court last week.

Opposition to Mugabe’s rule has grown in recent months with a surge of public demonstrations triggered by an economic crisis that has left banks short of cash and the government struggling to pay its workers.

Two weeks ago police made a series of arrests, including activists and bystanders, following violent demonstrations in the capital.

Mugabe, who has long been accused by opponents of silencing his critics and smothering democracy, warned at the weekend the protestors were “playing a dangerous game”.

“Let the opposition parties and all those angling for chaos, mayhem and violent demonstrations be warned that our patience has run out,” Mugabe said in an address to his party’s central committee.

“We also understand that they are planning to terrorise the rural areas in the mistaken belief that they can intimidate and harass our supporters. Let them be warned. They cannot win that war.

ZESA sues Gideon Gono over $87,000 electricity bill

The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has slapped former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor, Gideon Gono with an $87,000 debt recovery lawsuit.

The development comes hard on the heels of another High Court lawsuit by the Harare municipality over unpaid rates.

Gono is among prominent individuals who owe the power utility hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid electricity.

The bill accumulated at his once vibrant Lunar Chickens project in Borrowdale that President Robert Mugabe at one time toured.

gideon-gono

Gono left RBZ in 2013 after 10 years at the helm and was considered one of Zimbabwe’s wealthiest individuals.

The City of Harare recently issued summons for Gono to pay up his rates bill amounting to $59,000.

The bill accrued from 2012 at a property in Borrowdale and includes water, sewage, refuse removal, property tax and other supplementary charges.

The former governor has acknowledged the Harare City Council bill but is yet to respond to the summons from the municipality.

ZESA is owed about a billion dollars by power users which include government departments, private entities, residents and prominent individuals.

Among the biggest debtors are Sable Chemicals Industries which ZESA insists owes it close to $7 million, Chinhoyi municipality (close to $6 million) and Zvishavane Town Council ($4, 600,000)
