Opinion: This is why Khupe targeted these 3 MDC A MPs

Opinion: This is why Khupe targeted these 4 MDC A MPs. The four MPs are Chalton Hwende, Lilian Timveos, Thabitha Khumalo and Prosper Mutseyami. Constitutional law expert and political analyst, Alex Magaisa has given his perspective on the decision by Thokozani Khupe to recall just four MDC Alliance MPs from Parliament.

Writing in his latest Big Saturday Read titled “BSR: Concerning the recall of MDC Alliance MPs”, Magaisa suggested three reasons why Khupe and her Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora expelled the four. He said:

First, these four MPs have been chosen because they are the leaders of the MDC-Alliance in Parliament. Khumalo, who is the MDC Alliance Chairperson is the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly while Timveos is the leader of the opposition in the Senate. Mutseyami is the MDC Alliance Chief Whip while Charlton Hwende is the Secretary-General of the party.

The idea appears to be to attack the head of the MDC Alliance. Mwonzora and Hwende have had a long-standing battle which culminated in the battle for the Secretary-Generalship at the MDC Alliance Congress in 2019 in which Hwende prevailed. This part of the recall seems like a continuation of a personal war marked by a streak of vindictiveness.

The second part of the strategy is to divide and rule. Mwonzora’s notice could have applied to all MPs they claim to be their party’s members in Parliament.

They have chosen a small group in the hope of isolating them from the larger group. This, they hope, serves as a notice to the remainder of MPs whose position is now precarious.

Chalton-Hwende
Chalton Hwende

The newfound power of recall now hangs like the sword of Damocles above the heads of the remaining MPs. The hope is that the other MPs will be cowed into submission and follow the demands of the group that wants to reconstitute the MDC-T following the Supreme Court judgment.

The recall is a strategy to coerce MDC Alliance MPs into supporting the group that was dubiously awarded a judgment by the Supreme Court. They know that an MP’s seat represents an important part of an MP’s personal political economy. It brings prestige, power and material benefits to the individual MP.

Lilian Timveos
Lilian Timveos

This situation, therefore, represents a stern moral test for each MDC Alliance MP. They must make a choice between safeguarding their personal political economy, which would be selfish or acting for the greater good of the party under which they were elected, the MDC Alliance, which would be selfless.

To go with the view that they are MDC-T members would be to forsake the MDC Alliance, the party under which they campaigned and were elected into Parliament. It would also be politically duplicitous; fraud on the people who voted them as MDC Alliance representatives.

Chamisa and Tabitha Khumalo

The third, which is also a strategy of divide and rule relates to the MDC Alliance as a whole. If Khupe, Mwonzora and Komichi can successfully isolate so-called MDC-T MPs, from the MDC Alliance and the other MDC Alliance MPs carry on, they will leave Chamisa politically vulnerable.

The real target of this grand political strategy is the person who provides the most credible political competition to Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Prosper Mutseyami
Prosper Mutseyami

If the MDC Alliance succumbs to this divide and rule, it will be the end of opposition politics as we have known it for the past two decades. And this will have been achieved by paying one faction of the MDC against the other.

Trevor Noah slams people who do not wear face masks in public

Trevor Noah has slammed those who refuse to wear face masks in public to prevent the spread of Covid-19, saying the instruction to wear masks is there to protect us. Speaking on The Daily Show on Tuesday, Trevor cast the spotlight on several incidents of people not wearing masks that made the news, including a park being shut down because thousands of people were not wearing masks and a security guard being shot during a dispute over a face mask.

He also shared a report of a man who wiped his nose on a worker’s shirt after he was asked why he wasn’t wearing a face covering. Trevor was shocked by the reports and said that scientists need to forget a vaccine and start working on a chill pill. Health officials are asking for US to cover OUR faces to protect OURSELVES and everyone is acting like they have to be spayed and neutered. The people who don’t wear masks are ruining it for everyone.

Trevor Noah

Trevor asked why so many people refused to wear masks when it is for their own protection. He said he understood that it was uncomfortable and made it harder to breathe but the alternative was far worse. Do you know what makes it harder to breathe? Coronavirus! The SA government has been encouraging the use of face masks in public for more than a month and last week National Treasury and the department of trade & industry published guidelines for their use.

Regulations also require any user of public transport to wear a mask. The health ministry has said that while face masks may not prevent the wearer from catching the virus, it can stop those who have it from inadvertently spreading it.

“Since some persons with the coronavirus may not have symptoms or may not know they are infected, everyone should wear a face mask,” a statement by Dr A Pillay, acting director-general, on the government’s official Covid-19 resource and news portal read. Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize told a news briefing last month that he aimed to have the wearing of masks become a part of South African culture in time.

Chiwenga wanted to bring English clubs to the country before Stadium ban. United Kingdom-based FIFA licensed match agent Ellen Chiwenga claims she was working on bringing English Premier League teams to Zimbabwe when the Confederation of African Football (CAF) banned the country’s stadiums from hosting international games.

Posting on her Facebook account, Chiwenga said everything was almost done and they were working on the dates. She said:

I was hurt when Zimbabwe was banned from hosting international matches at local venues. I was working on bringing the EPL to Zimbabwe and facilitating a shirt sponsorship deal like that of Arsenal and Rwanda. We were only left on finalising the dates.

CAF banned all of Zimbabwe’s stadiums early this year, saying they did not meet the minimum standards for hosting international football matches and needed massive renovations.

The ban was put in place ahead of the postponed Afcon qualifiers at the end of March. A second inspection was conducted in April for the World Cup qualifiers but the suspension was upheld.

Social media influencer Mihlali Ndamase came under fire on Twitter after she shared a video of herself creating a ‘drag’ make-up look. Mihlali posted a new video on her YouTube channel where she filmed herself creating the look. The one thing I thoroughly enjoy about drag make-up is the freedom to play, there aren’t any rules, more is more and you better put on more honey.

Mihlali Ndamase

A few tweeps claimed that she was “appropriating” and others mentioned how “low quality” her work was on that particular look. However, it was actually Mihlali’s army of fans that resulted in her topping the Twitter trends list as they wondered why her critics wouldn’t just take a break.

Despite all that, sis still secured her bag. If you look closely at her posts, they are clearly labelled as paid ads and the hate essentially worked in her favour because people flocked to her YouTube channel to see what the fuss was all about.

LOL, Mihlali also tweeted asking people to “like, comment and subscribe” while they were it.

An emotional Nomzamo took to Instagram to pour out her heart for the whole world to see. She openly shared how finding her baby sister in her family garden after she had taken her own life is still a tragedy that haunts her to this day.

Nomzamo Mbatha

Nomzamo further added that it’s a heartbreak she will never recoverer from. This brought many insecurities and self-doubt, and usually, these two feelings always tend to stick around a little longer even after healing wants to take place.

Finding my baby sister in our family garden after she had taken her own life… it is a heartbreak that I will never fully recover from but will always be in the process of healing from. I felt guilt and shame. Was I not good enough for her to live for, was I a good sister, what signs did I miss.”

A part of Nomzamo blames herself for what happened, and unfortunately, time isn’t an easy medium to manipulate or turn back.

Why did I get on that flight the night before because if I was home the next morning she wouldn’t have gotten the chance to execute her plan.”

In spite of all the hurt and pain, hope still lurks in the background, and the actress said that putting herself in her sister’s shoes made her understand the pain she went through and that suddenly gave her peace, peace in knowing that her ninja (baby sister ) is in a place where she is free from hurt or any pain of this world.

“ I then turned my fear and heartbreak into love. To understand better and her experience and suffering. She is at peace and free from the pain of this world. She knew I loved her and that my family loves her .”

Hurungwe man trampled to death by elephants. Kenneth Machengo from Laughing Hills Farm in ward 18, was attacked by one of the seven elephants while harvesting his maize crop.

A 68-year-old Hurungwe man was trampled to death when a herd of elephants invaded his field on Monday last week. His body was discovered by villagers with signs of severe injuries sustained during the attack.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo, confirmed the incident. It is sad that one elderly man from Hurungwe lost his life after he was attacked by elephants on Monday (last week), he said. We are, however, doing all we can to drive away the animals as they now have ability further cause damage to crops and loss of human lives.

Due to overpopulation of the elephants, human-animal conflicts are now a major challenge in low lying communities that share boundaries with game reserves. World bodies have continued to restrict Zimbabwe from killing elephants and selling ivory, resulting in overpopulation.

The Communal Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources programme, which was initiated to financially support people affected by wild animal challenges, is being revived.

Recently, villagers in Mhangura Constituency pleaded with Zimparks to resolve the issue of stray elephants and a pride of lions that were threatening crops, livestock and humans.

S.e.x workers back in the streets, risk contracting COVID-19. The pandemic has hit the world’s oldest profession hard following the lockdown restrictions that saw their hunting grounds being shut to avert the spread of the deadly disease.

Commercial s.e.x workers are living in fear of contracting the coronavirus from their clients and are currently inquiring on best ways to practise safe s.e.x to avoid infection.

Life Health Education Development director Primrose Fundai, whose organisation works with commercial s.e.x workers, said they had begun researching on safe s.e.x during the pandemic as most of them rely on s.e.x work for a living.

“We advise them to respect social distancing, but given the lockdown extension, they cannot bear it,” she said. Fundai said some of the s.e.x workers were failing to access medication.

“The s.e.x workers are affected as denoted by massive food shortages. Since the lockdown, they have been struggling to survive as before. Some need to go and collect their medication during this lockdown but they do not have written letters to permit them to travel. They are being hindered by the restrictions,” she added. Fundai said it was high time government honoured its pledge to provide a relief fund, adding that a number of s.e.x workers registered for the money.

There are close to 400 s.e.x workers in Marondera with the number increasing during the tobacco selling season. The opening of a tobacco sales floor in the town’s industrial area is expected to attract s.e.x workers from as far as Mutare once lockdown restrictions are eased.

Saviour Kasukuwere’s Tyson Wabantu planning to snatch Walter Mzembi’s party members

Saviour Kasukuwere’s Tyson Wabantu planning to snatch Walter Mzembi’s party members. The Treasurer General of the party Agrippa Bopela has announced that he has suspended the four senior members of the party for gross indiscipline.

Walter Mzembi’s political party has been thrown into turmoil after some of its members were accused of plotting to join the Saviour Kasukuwere led #TysonWabantu Movement.

Read the full letter below:

I Agrippa Bopela Masiyakurima being one of the Founders and Treasurer General hereby suspend the following members for gross misconduct, treasonous acts and regionalism and putting the Party in disrepute pending disciplinary hearing:
1. Interim Secretary General Mr Lloyd Msipa
2. Interim Youth Chairman Mr Hamlet Matavire
3. Interim National Women Chair Ms Lwazi Mbowa

A. NEGOTIATING AND SEEKING TO LINK THE PARTY TO A TERRORIST GROUP

Refusal by Lloyd Msipa to unfollow Twitter Handle of ISIS linked movement @FranceAlRasa and commenting on terrorism after counsel from Founders of the People’s Party who do not want anything to do with Terrorism and then further purporting to Suspend me as Treasurer General for calling him to order not to drag us and the leaders into a mess by linking us to terrorist groups.

B. NEGOTIATING WITH VIOLENT MOVEMENTS

Threatening violence on myself as Treasurer General if Guardian Council does not suspend me, which Lloyd Msipa then unilaterally did by suspending me without authority. Mr Lloyd Msipa together with Mr Hamlet Matavire and Mrs Lwazi Mbowa drafted a letter in Hamlet’s name which was sent to Guardian Council and media. The letter clearly states that if Guardian Council does not deal with me, the Youth will take the law into their own hands and harm me.

The main reason of this being that I have been vocal on Twitter saying that we don’t want to go back to ZANU PF or to join Tysonwabantu Movement.

C. TRIBALISM AND CLANISM

Uneven distribution of position based on regionalism: National Women Chair and National Youth Chair are all relatives of the Secretary General and three quarters of the top leadership hails from Masvingo giving an unfair distribution of party post which is expected in a national party. I have been vocal on this.

This is what is called ‘rubbing shoulders with the Big Bosses’ if she is really telling the truth. Imagine, his motorcade drive past her home, wow! Fans were left in a young frenzy on Tuesday night after media personality Lerato Kganyago claimed: “the president” was her next-door neighbour.

Lerato’s young flex crept up when she was responding to Linda Moeketsi‘s question asking “who was your most interesting neighbour”.

Lerato Kganyago

With a simple answer, Lerato replied, “The president”, leaving many dumbfounded.

While many thought she may be joking and others were still trying to figure out what president, Lerato said the president’s motorcade was always driving past her gate.

Lerato then hit back at a tweep who told her it slaps harder if she owned the property where the president resides.

“Will it slap harder if I tell you I OWN a few properties?!” she said.

Here are some of the reactions from the streets:

Report: Mwonzora and police to takeover Harvest House on Friday. Former MDC Secretary-General Douglas Mwonzora is reportedly making an arrangement with members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police to takeover Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House on Friday.

The move comes a day after Mwonzora wrote a letter to Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda to expel MPs Charlton Hwende, Tabitha Khumalo and Prosper Mutseyami.

Reporting on the matter senior journalist Brezhnev Malaba said, “Douglas Mwonzoro has requested police assistance in evicting MDC-Alliance youths from Morgan Tsvangirai House this Friday. He says there are up to 35 violent youths camped in the building, posing a health risk to the public and making it difficult for his party to organise a congress.”

On Tuesday, ZANU PF posted on its website accusing the expelled members of showing ignorance in interpreting Zimbabwean laws.

“The current chaos within the two opposition parties MDCs exposes their political immaturity and lack of density to be the people’s favourite come 2023.” ZANU PF said. “The sentiments by the three expelled MDC Alliance Members of Parliament after decision ruled by Parliament also exposes their arrogance and silliness in failing to interpret the law by which they are expected to understand and protect as lawmakers.”

Guard loses gun to robbers during an attack

Guard loses gun to robbers during an attack. Leeroy Ncube (24) of Mahatshula suburb and the three accomplices who are still at large allegedly went to Camstick Mine at Famona Business Centre in Inyathi armed with knives and stones.

An illegal gold panner allegedly teamed up with three accomplices and raided a gold mine in Inyathi where they attacked a security guard before disarming him of his service pistol, which they later used to rob local shops.  Upon arrival, they allegedly struck Mr Nqobizitha Dube who was manning the premises with stones and he fell to the ground. They rushed to the scene and allegedly grabbed him by the neck as he lay on the ground.

The four robbers stabbed him on the leg with a knife before disarming him of a Taurus revolver which was loaded with five rounds of ammunition. This emerged when Ncube, who is facing robbery charges approached the High Court seeking bail.

Ncube through his lawyers Mathonsi Ncube Law Chambers filed an application for bail pending trial at the Bulawayo High Court citing the State as a respondent. In his bail statement, Ncube is denying the charges, arguing that there was no evidence linking him to the offence.

“I was with my friends watching movies on the day in question and I believe the complainant’s identification must be tested in light of his alibi,” he said. Ncube argued that there were no compelling reasons by the investigating officer for him to be denied bail.

“The investigating officer, in this case, has deposed of an affidavit opposing my bail application. He argued that I was of no fixed abode, was likely to interfere with investigations and that since the stolen firearm has not been recovered, I am likely to regroup with my accomplices who are still at large and commit more robberies if released on bail,” he said.

Ncube challenged the investigating officer’s assertions, saying his grounds for challenging his bail were speculative and baseless. “It is submitted that the fact that no firearm was recovered from me points to my innocence rather than guilt. The commission of other offences is also purely speculative and not founded on any real fact,” he said.

Ncube said there was no basis by the investigating officer that if released on bail he would abscond. He offered to pay $500 bail and to report once a fortnight at Queen Park Police Station as part of the bail conditions. Ncube also offered to continue residing at his given address until the matter is finalised.

The State is yet to respond. According to court papers, it was stated that on April 5 this year, Dube was on duty at Camstick Mine in Inyathi when Ncube in the company of three accomplices spotted him from their spot under the cover of darkness.

They allegedly struck Dube with a stone on the right side of the ribs and he fell down before they rushed to the scene. Ncube grabbed the security guard by the neck and sat on his chest before one of them pulled a knife and struck him on the left leg. Dube managed to positively identify Ncube’s face.

They used the same knife to cut off the buckle of a holster containing his pistol, which was loaded with five rounds of ammunition. They took the firearm and disappeared into the dark. They allegedly used the pistol to rob shops around the area.

On April 21, detectives who were on patrol received a tip-off from Dube after he had spotted Ncube at Famona Business Centre in Inyathi leading to his arrest.
