ED Mnangagwa moves in to deal with his successor

ED Mnangagwa moves in to deal with his successor. In a wide-ranging interview with Daily News Madhuku said, “The first (amendment) is the removal of the presidential running mate clause. The running mate clause was meant to start in 2023. The amendment will take it away, so that it will never apply. We will continue with the current system where the President hires and fires Vice Presidents at will.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa‘s ZANU PF party is pushing for the amendment of the constitution to deal with the succession plan that is provided by the constitution, Constitutional law expert Professor Lovemore Madhuku says. “Under a running mate system, every presidential candidate nominates a vice president who is also elected with him/her. Such a vice president cannot be fired and is an automatic successor of the president in the event of death or resignation.”

Madhuku said the move by Mnangagwa has nothing to do with constitutional democracy but to was meant to deal with ZANU F factionalism. “It is nothing but the consolidation of power. All the major proposals focus on giving more power to the president. The rush stems from two agendas: to deal with internal Zanu PF power dynamics by scrapping the running mate clause and to control the Judiciary for purely partisan interests. The rush has nothing to do with deepening democracy in the country.”

Talking about interacting with ZANU PF during POLAD platform, Madhuku said, “The only thing I know about Zanu PF is that it is a very difficult dialogue partner. Despite its protestations to the contrary, it has so many centres of power that you can never be sure who, at any one point, is in control.

“As soon as you agree with one group to institute reforms, you are immediately overtaken by events when another group moves in the opposite direction. We will not give up: with time we will outwit them and get much-needed reforms before 2023.”

Dubai set to open for tourists in 2 weeks time

Dubai set to open for tourists in 2 weeks time. UAE tourism hub Dubai will open for tourists on 7 July but with strict rules, The Independent reports. Dubai which was closed to travellers since 25 March has said travellers will be required to produce a medical certificate and undergo a mandatory PCR test at Dubai Airports. If someone tests positive for COVID-19 on arrival they will be taken to an isolation facility for 14 days at their own expense.

In case tourists want to go to the beach:

Beach-goers are required to maintain a distance of two metres between one another, along with their sun-beds, while there should be a gap of four metres between two groups of people and their sun-beds on the beach. UAE recorded over 44 000 COVID-19 cases, over 32 000 recoveries and 305 deaths since the onset of the outbreak. One of the world’s leading tourist destinations and air hubs will reopen to visitors from 7 July – but with strict new rules.

Dubai and the rest of the United Arab Emirates suddenly closed to travellers on 25 March, with flights abruptly halted. Now the emirate’s Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management says that residents can start returning home from today. Citizens and residents will be permitted to travel overseas from tomorrow, “provided the destination countries agree to receive them.” And tourists are allowed back in from the first Tuesday in July. But all arrivals will be required to produce a medical certificate showing a negative Covid-19 test result within the past four days – or undergo a mandatory PCR test at the Dubai airports.

Anyone who tests positive for Covid-19 will be isolated “at an institutional facility provided by the government for 14 days at their own expense”.

Beaches reopened in Dubai at the weekend, with strict social-distancing measures.

“Beach-goers are required to maintain a distance of two metres between one another, along with their sun-beds, while there should be a gap of four metres between two groups of people and their sun-beds on the beach,” says Dubai’s Department of Tourism. Dubai previously welcomed around 1.5 million British tourists each year. Millions more change planes in the city, which is the hub for Emirates. After the UAE’s skies were abruptly closed, tens of thousands of UK travellers were stranded abroad.

Every new arrival to Dubai will have their temperature taken on arrival. The average temperature in Dubai in July is 41C (106F).

Mai Titi in self-quarantine after returning from the UK. The versatile entertainer said she had missed her children and family back in Zimbabwe after she was locked up in the Queen’s land after a botched tour. In an interview with H-Metro shortly after touching down at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, Mai TT said home was best. Comedienne Mai TT who returned from UK over the weekend says she is safe in private self-quarantine.

“At first it was stressful but I got used to it. Indeed I was missing home especially my kids I could even cry whilst thinking about them. “I’m quarantined in a private place which I can’t give out a name for security reasons but very comfortable,” she said. Mai TT who is a darling of many said she came back rich with more stuff for her fans.

“My fans should expect more fireworks now that I revisited my lost career of music but I’m back in the music industry with a bang so they should even expect live performances and shows with a full band after Covid-19. “Musically, I collaborated with Kazz Khalif, a well-known musician from the UK, Icey Stanley a hip hop guru from the UK, Faybay a lady from the UK as well Lamont a musician from there. I also did videos which are trending on YouTube

“I have recorded so many songs such as Letting You Go featuring Kazz Khalif, Nyarara featuring Lamont Chitepo, Ufambe Neni featuring Icey Stanley and Sugarzaddy featuring Faybay,” she said. Although Mai TT has been away for some time, said she never abandoned her charity work as she helped many people during the Covid-19 induced lockdown.

“As I was in UK, I didn’t forget my Zimbabwe community since I was donating free clean water in almost every community. “I donated groceries for a single mother and orphans. It has always been in me to help the needy. “I also have my soccer team of young boys called Team Mai TT. Some of them I pay their school fees and assist them,” she said.

Despite her stint in the UK where her former boyfriend Zizoe resides, she said they could not reconcile as was speculated. “I am not getting along with that criminal, I don’t even want to hear about him and I regret knowing him and helping him since he betrayed me. “I’m already in a new relationship, I don’t take back what I vomited so he can go hang and besides he never loved me he only wanted fame and used me as a ladder,” she said.

Mai TT also gave a good piece of advice to single mother in her similar position. “I would like to urge them not to date young and broke men because they will destroy you since they are men on a mission which they failed to achieve on their own.”

Like most artistes who rely on numbers and public gatherings, May TT said she had several gig cancelled. “I had several gigs in UK but because of Covid-19 everything went to zero I had to refund people and it was a loss on my side. “However, Covid-19 will come and go just like any other disease. Even if it stays we shall be protected by the blood of Jesus,” she said.

She also thanked individuals who looked after her when she was dumbed. “I want to thank my cousin Rose who took me after Zizoe’s family threw me out yet they are the ones who had made me to come there. “Rose told me I can’t stay in a hotel whilst she’s there. She took me to her house and we stayed happily till I returned home.

“I also want to thank our very good friend Simba aka DJ Refkex who connected me to UK celebrities. “I can never thank these guys they stood by me through thick n thin. “’ At the end of the day I did more than what Zizoe did during my stay in England. “He is just gallivanting hopping from one woman to another and being fed by his family. He has nothing to show for his stay,” she added.

Gospel artist: I was r@pped as a child. Gospel artiste reveals as she raises awareness on s.e.xual abuse. Chirenje – now 37-years-old – could not report since her mother was silenced by close relatives for the purpose of maintaining relationships and uniting the family. “I am a victim of r@pe. I was abused by a family member. “Sadly someone who was supposed to be a protector took advantage of me.

Chitungwiza based gospel artiste Sandra Chirenje has revealed that she was s.e.xually abused during her childhood days with a close relative. “I was young, I could not report since my mom was told not to report because of the consequences that would come after that, like divisions in the family and being abandoned by relatives. “And it pains me, but I am doing advocacy work on that,” said Chirenje. Chirenje advised ladies that dressing can invite s.e.xual abusers and most r@pists are close associates. She also said girls must speak out and report r@pe cases.

“Most r@pists are persons who are close to us. Strangers are culprits too but on a thin margin. “Be careful when you are with the opposite s.e.x whether you are a boy or girl. “Fashion is good but don’t you think it’s wise to cover up, and try by all means not to expose your body, especially girls.

“Never allow anyone to touch you without your consent, above all when it happens report,” she told H-Metro. Chirenje recently released a track specifically meant for awareness on sexual abuse titled Ndozvireva Chete accompanied by a video.

Chirenje

She said the track produced by Charles Ayibeki of Big Sound Studios is about her having the courage to speak out. “It talks about a broken soul which was closed under, a soul that was burning from inside for a long period of time but now that soul is saying because I now can come out saying it out(Ndakuzvireva).

Sandra Chirenje

“I was told not to but now I’m saying it out,” she said. Meanwhile, Chirenje is also an ambassador of Alive Albinism initiative, an organisation that helps people with albinism. Chirenje has three albums to her credit, namely Ndamuwana Jesu (2013), Tichaivaka Chete (2015 ) and Shekinah (2018). She has also done several singles. Chirenje has worked with studios such as VOT Studio, Bishy Studio and Revival Studio.

Dynamos accident survivor speaks out

Dynamos accident survivor speaks out. Maxwell Machisi made the revelations when Dynamos, through their supporter’s chapters around the country, donated to the family of the deceased. A Dynamos fan, who survived a road accident that claimed nine of other fans as they travelled to watch their team in action four years ago, says it is a miracle to be alive.

The nine fans perished in June 2016 in Battlefields on their way to Ascot for a date against Chapungu. Machisi narrated what transpired with tears in his eyes. “It was a joyous mode that morning. Travelling to support our team brings excitement. As we left Harare early morning we were optimistic not knowing what lies ahead of us. “It was around 10:30 am when the sprinter we were travelling in burst its a tyre,” said Machisi.

The sprinter had 21 passengers and nine perished – seven on the spot and two upon admission at the hospital. “The driver lost control. We all panicked and some were shouting advising the driver not to put brakes. “I lost it and the last thing I remembered was we crashed on a tree. It was an ugly scene. “Me surviving is a miracle and I am thankful for that,” he added. Machisi braved on to narrate the incident and now with a smile on his face, he said the most interesting thing is the team went on to win the match. “But we won the match.

“It was a pity we couldn’t celebrate that win since we have lost our fellow brothers and sisters and some of us were battling between life and death in the hospital,” said Machisi. Machisi also received a food humper and said he was humbled by the gesture by the supporters. “I would want to thank this family for not abandoning us in the time of need. “I spent more than half a year in the hospital. “My kids’ school fees and food are well taken care of. “These people have been with me since day one and for that may God keep on blessing them,” he said.

RBZ Governor Mangudya buys VIP cars for US$400 000 per vehicle. A video that has gone viral on social media reveals that the Ministry of Finance and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe falsified reports that the two institutions purchased VIP vehicles for US$400 000 instead of the original price of about US$110 000.

The video shows one W. Chingwena of Croco Motors telling a parliamentary committee that his company supplied Landcruisers to the Zimbabwean government at about US$110 00 each. But the Reserve Bank and the Ministry of Finance told parliament that the cars were worth US$400 000 each.

Polical analyst Alex Magaisa said, “This is fraud of significant proportions. Current heads at the Finance Ministry might plead that they weren’t there when it happened, but they have a duty to account. Another one for ZACC.”

Drama as 1111 junior police officers resist intermittent transfers

Drama as 1111 junior police officers resist intermittent transfers. The cops represented by Detective Constable Bryn Moyo (CID Theft, Harare), Sergeant Terrence Zireva (Budiriro) and Assistant Inspector Emmanuel Chipanda (Ruwa Police Station) successfully filled an application at the High Court challenging the transfers at their own cost.

1100+ junior police officers reportedly successfully challenged their transfers at their own cost as they cited that the transfers could not be sustained from their meagre salaries, Newsday reports. Justice Benjamin Chikowero heard the case of the cops who argued that the transfer was beyond their means especially considering their minor school-going children. In some of the court papers seen by the publication, police officers said:

My children are enrolled at schools in Harare, which I believe to be in their interest. I am alive to the fact that schools are still closed, but rumours are that they might reopen soon. If the rumours are true, it would mean that I would have to return my children to Harare from Gweru and look for someone to take care of them. My transfer was effected at a time when I had already paid my June rentals, I had already planned for the month. The financial implications of my transfer from ZRP Ruwa include buying new school uniforms, looking for alternative accommodation, schools and that represents gross inconvenience and irreparable harm since no allowances have been paid to me.

In delivering his ruling Justice Chikowore ruled that: Pending the determination of this matter, the applicant is hereby granted the following relief: applicant’s transfers dated June 2020 from their respective stations be and is hereby stayed pending the determination of the appeal noted on June 8, 2020.

In a statement, the police appealed to relatives and friends of the escapee to report his whereabouts. A Harare man last week escaped from a quarantine centre at Harare Polytechnic after testing positive to Covid-19 and police have launched a manhunt to prevent the spread of the virus.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing for information which may lead to the location of a 33-year-old man who escaped from Harare Polytechnic Isolation Centre on June 15, 2020, after testing positive for the Covid-19 virus and another 28-year-old man who also escaped on June 17, 2020, before getting results.

“Family members, friends and close associates of the two are implored to report so that the spread of Covid-19 by the two can be curtailed,” Asst Comm Nyathi said. Meanwhile, two other returnees recently escaped from a quarantine centre at Plumtree High School, bringing the total number of escapees to 180.

Report: Kuda Tagwireyi could become Zim’s biggest gold buyer after bagging a deal with Fidelity Printers. According to the publication: Fidelity announced on May 26 that large scale gold buyers must own mines producing at least 50kg of gold per month, a move designed to flush out foreign buyers. Landela Mining has also taken majority shareholding in Jena Gold Mine, Elvington Mine, Golden Kopje Mine and Sabi Gold Mine from the state-owned Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation as Tagwirei expands his mining portfolio.

Businessman and alleged Zanu PF benefactor Kuda Tagwireyi and his company Landela Mining Venture through CBZ Bank could become Zimbabwe’s biggest gold buyer after striking a deal with Fidelity printers that will see CBZ turning a portion of its banking halls into specialised gold-buying and handling centres, ZimLive reports.

The company also owns Bindura Nickel Corporation and is a joint venture partner in the US$500 million Russian-led Darwendale platinum mine project. Tagwirei through Akribos Wealth Managers (Pvt) Ltd has a 30% shareholding in CBZ which makes him a majority shareholder.

Boost for Thokozani Khupe as MDC Alliance principals back her. The three principals are Transform Zimbabwe president Jacob Ngarivhume, Zanu Ndonga leader Denford Musiyarira and Mathisa Guchutu of the Multiracial Christian Democracy (MCD). The Movement for Democratic Change Tsvangirai (MDC-T) led by Thokozani Khupe has reportedly secured the support of three MDC Alliance principals who were part of the 2017 pact.

The development was confirmed by an anonymous MDC-T official who told New Zimbabwe that the inaugural meeting between the principals and MDC-T officials had been slated for Saturday. The official said: The meeting was supposed to take place in Harare on Saturday last week, but it could not happen because of Ngarivhume’s absenteeism.

In fact, he sent through an excuse and asked for a postponement of the meeting on the basis that he had travelled outside Harare on an emergency and the meeting was duly rescheduled to early next month. The development was also confirmed by MDC-T national chairperson Morgen Komichi who said the plan was to review the Alliance pact of 2017 and establish a grand coalition to contest in the 2023 election which are drawing closer.

He said MDC Alliance was left out since it “is not a political party” adding that perhaps Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube would bring their parties- PDP and MDC-N respectively.

Finance sector ready to work with banks to make 99-year-old land leases bankable

Finance sector ready to work with banks to make 99-year-old land leases bankable. Mthuli while he was touring Beitbridge Border Post, said the government was working on fine-tuning the command agriculture so that it is implemented from a commercial point: Treasury through the Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube has said it is ready to work with banks on the 99-year-old land leases to ensure that they are bankable, The Herald reports.

I am aware of the need to give farmers bankable land so that they may operate as businessmen. However, that doesn’t necessarily fall under my ministry. First of all, if you look at the Command Agriculture initiative, you will note that we have gone through stages, all designed to bolster the process for upgrading productivity within the agriculture sector.

From last year, Government has been able to crowd in the banking sector as a lender to the agriculture sector by providing banks with guarantees under the commercial command agriculture initiative. This is what has also happened with this year’s command winter wheat programme and the same thing will happen during the summer cropping. We have the 99-year leases and these give some form of title to the holders of that land. But I am also aware that banks have not welcomed these as warmly like in other countries

The 99-year-old land leases and command agriculture are marred with controversy as banks refuse to extend loans to farmers on the leases for various reasons while command agriculture torched a storm in parliament last year after it emerged that 3 Billion went to command Agriculture but the country is still food insecure with over 4 million people in need of food aid according to UNWFP.

ZCTU demands justice for 2 employees reportedly shot by Chinese employers. The alleged tragedy was reported by MDC Alliance deputy spokesperson in the Youth Assembly, Womberai Nhende who posted on Twitter on the 21st of June 2020 saying they were shot over a salary dispute. The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has demanded justice for two Zimbabwean workers who were reportedly shot and killed by their Chinese employers in Gweru.

He said: A chinese national has shot and injured two natives in Gweru over a salary dispute. And no arrest has been made. It is not clear as to when the incident happened. Responding to the post, ZCTU said: The government has sold the country to China. Now the Chinese do as they pleased & illtreat Zimbabwean workers in our own country because they know we have no protection from the government. The liberators have turned our good country into a predator state. #justiceforworkers

There have been numerous reports of abuse of workers by Chinese employers in the country with some workers reportedly working in unsafe working environments and unsafe conditions. Last year, Norton legislator, Temba Mliswa claimed that Chinese investors were not in compliance with health and safety rules, environmental laws, labour practices and all aspects of human rights.

75-year-old man acquitted of r@ping granddaughter. The girl who was in Form 1 last year, dropped out of school after falling pregnant and gave birth in January this year. A 75-year-old man from Jambezi in Hwange district who was accused of impregnating his granddaughter after allegedly raping her twice has been acquitted. The man from Jabula area under Chief Shana was arrested on October 3 last year and charged with two counts of rape and another of attempting to r@pe his late son’s 14-year-old daughter.

The man pleaded not guilty and told the court that the complainant was impregnated by her elder sister’s husband. Acquitting the man, Hwange regional magistrate Mr Collet Ncube said it was difficult to convict the accused when it was not clear how the complainant’s brother-in-law was ruled out of the case after being implicated.

Mr Ncube said the accused’s wife and son who testified in court gave credible defence testimonies. In his defence, the accused who was represented by Mr Thulani Nkala of Dube, Nkala and Company, said his granddaughter was influenced by her elder sister to lie against him to protect her husband.

He said he is not in good books with the complainant’s elder sister over the inheritance of a house left by his late son, the complainant’s father. The accused said he was shocked when police arrested him in October and nothing being done to the complainant’s brother-in-law who had been implicated in August at a family meeting.

The family suspected the girl had a secret love affair with her sister’s husband as they were once caught kissing in a car. The girl is staying with the brother-in-law and her elder sister in Victoria Falls. The court was told that the girl denied being pregnant and refused to name the father despite a village health worker having tested her using a pregnancy test kit.

Her grandmother had taken her to the health worker after suspecting that she was pregnant. Nurses and a doctor at Victoria Falls Hospital in September last year also failed to make the girl talk. The family had then resolved that paternity test be done after the birth of the child. No tests were done. At some point, the family summoned a self-proclaimed prophet in an attempt to force the girl to reveal the person who impregnated her.

How a bet on Peter Ndlovu opened doors for African players in Premier League

How a bet on Peter Ndlovu opened doors for African players in Premier League. That statistic changed a week later, however, when a skinny teenager from Bulawayo came off the bench in Coventry City’s 2-0 win at Tottenham to become the first African player to feature in the English Premier League. “His balance is as perfect as Trevor Brooking’s and he’s quicker . . he gets your knees wobbling with his skill,” said the Coventry manager, Bobby Gould, of the Zimbabwean. “I’ve never seen a man with quicker feet. Some of his tricks are astounding.”

The number of African players plying their trade in Europe’s biggest leagues grew steadily in the early Nineties, although there was none present in the starting line-ups on the inaugural day of the English Premier League in August 1992. In stark comparison to today’s competition, only 13 non-British players were selected by the 22 teams, with Ipswich’s Canadian goalkeeper Craig Forrest the only representative from outside Europe.

Deal that broke the mould

In more ways than one, English football had entered a new era. Winston Makamure still enjoys telling the story even two decades later. “I hired a car from St Albans for £15. I put £10 of petrol in it and went up to Coventry,” he remembers with a broad smile.

“I stayed with a relative on Sunday in Tamworth and went to the training ground the next day but the laundry lady outside told me that they weren’t training that day. I was supposed to drop off the car later on but I phoned the company and arranged to have it for another day. Then I went to a service station on the M1 and slept in my car. I was so determined to win that bet.”

As he made his way to Coventry’s training ground on a cold December day in 1992, what Makamure didn’t know was that a wager he had made with university friends would end up changing his life forever. It had been 18 months since Peter Ndlovu first moved to the Midlands as a teenager, having been spotted by the 1987 FA Cup-winning manager John Sillett.

Ndlovu eventually arrived at Coventry in the summer of 1991 from Highlanders for just £10 000. Still only 18, he made his debut in August as a substitute in the 1-1 draw against Queens Park Rangers, becoming the second Zimbabwean to appear in England’s top flight after Bruce Grobbelaar. He ensured instant hero status a few weeks later when he scored the second goal against Arsenal at Highbury in a famous 2-1 victory over the reigning champions that also featured Lee Dixon’s comical own-goal lob over David Seaman. It was the first time George Graham’s side had lost at home in the league for 18 months.

‘I had to start taking it seriously’

Ndlovu was soon promoted to the starting XI, scoring a brilliant individual goal against local rivals Aston Villa in a 1-0 victory before injury intervened. Despite that, it was a solid first season for the spindly teenager who had fondly been christened “Nuddy” by team-mates and fans.

“When I used to watch English football on TV I would think, ‘Oh, that’s a big league’, but I never thought I would have the chance to play there,” Ndlovu admitted in 2014. “When I got there, I asked myself, ‘Am I good enough to be here?’ because I quickly realised I had to start taking it seriously.” As Coventry prepared for the inaugural English Premier League season following the appointment of Gould, the new manager had been impressed by Ndlovu’s performances in pre-season.

“I didn’t know much about him at all when I first got there. He was as quiet as a field mouse,” says Gould. “But all of a sudden when I saw him in training I thought, ‘My goodness, what have we got here?’ He came under the radar really. Looking back now, the nearest person I can compare him with today is Eden Hazard. He was so hard to stop when he had that momentum.”

With victories in their first three matches of the new season, the same applied to Coventry as they went top of the Premier League table for a few days before being brought down to earth with successive defeats at the end of August. But having been dogged by inconsistency in his opening season, Ndlovu’s historic appearance against Tottenham earned him a regular starting spot.

“He was living in digs, which is never easy. When you leave Zimbabwe it’s hard to adapt,” says Gould. “It’s always a bit difficult for African players to come and settle in but I think it was the way everyone loved him. It was a real love affair between him and the fans. He was a lovely young man who had come over with no airs and graces but just wanted to be successful. After a while he just blossomed.”

Ndlovu’s diving header in the win over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough was Coventry’s third away victory in succession and they made history a few days later by beating Oldham at Boundary Park to equal their best-ever run in the top flight. Suddenly, they were fighting it out with Norwich City at the top of the table.

“We were a flying machine,” laughs Gould. Another narrow win over Tottenham moved Coventry into second spot. Despite a draw at Nottingham Forest a few days later, Gould’s side went into their fixture against Norwich at Highfield Road on 26 September knowing that victory would see them climb above their opponents to the summit of the Premier League. It all seemed to be going wrong, however, when Ian Crook scored for the visitors in the 13th minute. Ndlovu had other ideas. Racing on to a through ball from veteran defender Kenny Sansom after a clever dummy from Kevin Gallacher, the 19-year-old beat his marker to the ball and sped towards the penalty area.

Two Norwich players tried to stop him but Ndlovu seemed to glide past them before wrong-footing goalkeeper Bryan Gunn with a wonderful shimmy and sending the ball into the bottom corner. “That is a lovely goal by the Zimbabwean,” exclaimed BBC commentator Barry Davies. “Wonderful balance. Smooth as silk.” On the touchline Gould celebrated with vigour. “The reaction from everybody — there wasn’t a cheer immediately but then everyone realised what he had done.” He adds, with a large slice of embellishment: “It was a brilliant goal, virtually from the halfway line. The balance and the finish were amazing.”

‘Just behind [George] Best’

The match finished in a 1-1 draw that meant Coventry slipped to third behind Blackburn. Afterwards, Gould claimed that Ndlovu ranked with Manchester United’s emerging star Ryan Giggs “just behind [George] Best” in terms of ability, much to the amusement of many of the assembled press.

After the early promise, however, a series of draws turned into defeats as Coventry plummeted down the table. Ndlovu had continued his knack of scoring at some of England’s most famous grounds with goals in the draws against Everton and struggling champions Leeds. Yet by the time Makamure was preparing to travel to England in December to begin studying for a degree in IT at Hatfield Polytechnic in his latest posting for the Zimbabwean army, Coventry were without a win for nearly three months.

“My friends and I were having a drink one night and talking about football,” he explains. “One guy said to me, ‘There is a very good youngster who is now at Coventry who is good enough for any team in England.’ “Having been there before a few times already, I said it wasn’t possible, that it was ‘drink talk’. I said that he wouldn’t make it in England. We then had a bet of 20 Zimbabwe dollars that I could get a photo with him.”

Novel approach

Having returned to the training ground the next day after a rough night in his car, Makamure adopted a novel approach to gain access to his hero. “I told them that I was from the same village in Zimbabwe as Peter and I had come to meet him. I had never even seen him play! Luckily they let me in and I waited for the players to finish training. When he came out, he had already been told that someone from Zimbabwe was there to see him.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t speak Ndebele and he was terrible at Shona! So we started speaking in English. One of the players said, ‘If you’re from the same village then why are you speaking in English?’ Peter said, ‘It’s for the benefit of everyone else and we don’t want to be rude!’ He brought me some sandwiches and I said to Peter, ‘Here is a bet I did with my friends back home, so can I please have a photo with you?’ He called the entire team and I had pictures with them.”

Gould wandered over and asked what was going on and for some reason Ndlovu said, “Gaffer, this is my agent.” “I had no idea what he was talking about,” admits Makamure. “I had just gone there to take pictures! But that is how it started.” As he prepared to leave, Ndlovu offered him tickets for the game against Ipswich Town at Highfield Road that weekend.

“I knew that I didn’t really have any money to come back up but agreed to anyway,” Makamure laughs. “We exchanged numbers and I went straight to a place to get my pictures developed. Then I went to a phone box to call my friends and tell them I had won the bet! I said, ‘Guys, I’ve got the pictures. Just make sure you’ve got my money!’” Ndlovu was voted man of the match against Ipswich as Coventry were denied an elusive win by a late penalty, with Makamure watching on as his guest from the stands – he gave his seat in the directors’ box to his cab driver because he wasn’t wearing a suit and tie.

“Afterwards we went for a meal at KFC and we were just chatting. He told me how much he earned a week from playing for Coventry and it wasn’t a lot. He told me that he needed some help getting a new contract so I said I would talk to a friend of mine at university who might be able to give us some advice. Then he asked me if I would be able to do it and I said that I could try. We shook hands and that was the start of our business relationship.”

With little more than six months until his original two-year contract was due to expire, there was plenty of work to do. “Before I went, I told Peter to tell Coventry that I was going home but we should talk about it when I returned,” says Makamure. “At first, they were not very keen to talk to anyone else and just wanted to do it with Peter on their own. A friend of mine said to me, ‘They don’t want anyone else to be there because they know they will end up paying more money.’ Not that I had a clue what to do in negotiating.”

He was then driven to Highfield Road and met chairman Derrick Robins to discuss the terms of Ndlovu’s new contract, with Gould also making an appearance.

‘Disappearing act’

“They were ever so nice to me. They had absolutely no idea about how I had come to be Peter’s agent. We chatted and I said, ‘OK, I need some time to talk to Peter about everything’ and asked them to put their offer in writing. “We went away together to discuss things and did a disappearing act. They were trying to find us to get us to come back the following day but we stayed away. Eventually we came back and went to meet them.”

Incredibly, Ndlovu had been earning just £495 a week since joining from Highlanders and his new offer was double that. But Makamure, who would go on to represent Ndlovu until his retirement in 2011, and several other Zimbabwean players including Benjani Mwaruwari, had been doing his homework.

“I’d been asking around to see what other people were earning so we knew what he was worth,” he says. “What they had offered I multiplied by four and they agreed immediately. Peter signed the contract and was also paid a signing-on fee for the first time. He increased his wages fourfold. I have no idea whether I took my 10 per cent. “All I was interested in was winning my bet and I could now go and watch Premier League games. I wasn’t in it for business or anything. He signed the contract and I ended up going back to college. I think he gave me about £100 to say thanks.”

The business, science behind ritual killings explained in detail

The business, science behind ritual killings explained in detail. The messages were witchcraft delivered digitally, as the unknown sangoma, from his lair somewhere in one of South Africa’s nine provinces gave Ngwenya instructions on how to spill blood and in the aftermath, prepare for a life of riches. The details of the alleged murder are gruesome. Half of Mazolo’s body, from the waist down, was missing while her breasts and palms were cut off. On the surface, the tragic killing of Mazolo already looks like a ritual murder. The grizzly details suggest that this indeed is the case.

“You must cut yourself and spill your blood onto a mirror,” the message to Tawana Ngwenya reportedly read. “Gaze into the mirror and say out loud that you are selling your soul for riches. After that you must open the door for my boys to go out.” The messages, from a South African sangoma, were allegedly part of a chain of instructions to Ngwenya, messages that allegedly led him to take the life of Tawana Mazolo at Matsheumhlophe, Bulawayo.

After all, every once in a while, the pages of publications in Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries drip with the blood of innocents murdered at the altar of self-enrichment. There was the case of Edmore Rundogo, whose dismembered remains were found in Maun, about 500km from Botswana’s second city of Francistown.

Rundogo had left his home in Lobengula West (Bulawayo) in search of a better life in Botswana. Instead of the proverbial greener pastures on the other side of the Plumtree border, he had found machete-wielding men who savagely murdered him, ripping his heart out. The five killers also cut off his hands, feet, privates and took part of his brains. The killers, after being told by the traditional healer that had hired them that they had killed the wrong person, had then tried to burn his body.

South of the Limpopo, there was the case of 10-year-old Masego Kgomo, a schoolgirl who was still alive when Brian Mangwale ripped out her womb. During the course of his trial for murder, Mangwale would change his story three times, a fact that the courts took as evidence that he had no remorse for his actions. In one of the three accounts he claimed that he and a group of friends had taken the young girl to a traditional healer in Soshanguve, who gave them a concoction to drink before he dragged the crying Masego into a room.

The girl was still crying when the traditional healer returned with her 10 minutes later and started sprinkling something on her body. Mangwale claimed the medicine man had then returned with a knife and a clay pot and ordered Masego to lie down on a bed. When she refused, she was forcibly held down while the traditional healer stabbed her in the stomach, put his hand inside her body and removed something that looked like a ball, which he put into the clay pot. He also removed her left breast.

Mangwale told the magistrate he heard the others had wrapped the child’s body in plastic and drank muthi before dumping her body in the veld on the instructions of the traditional healer. While his testimony kept changing, the courts were convinced that Kgomo had died after meeting the nasty end of Mangwale’s knife. A life in prison sentence was handed to the killer. Body parts are big business in Africa, but particularly in South Africa where trade in human body parts is lucrative. In the race to get rich in places like the City of Gold, Johannesburg, some believe that the key to getting their hand on all that glitters is taking a shortcut.

Many Zimbabweans, like Mazolo, can trace their gruesome ritual death to powerful sangomas south of the Limpopo. While Ngwenya was the one allegedly wielding the instrument of death when Mazolo took her last painful breath, this is not always the case. Middlemen, like in the case of Mangwale, are usually the ones that handle the dirty work. According to South African scholar Louise Vincent, certain gangs specialise in killing people for the harvesting of body parts only.

“It is believed that certain murder gangs specialise in muthi killings. Unlike human sacrifice where death is the express purpose of the act, in muthi-related killings, death is an anticipated and accepted by-product of the garnering of human organs but it is not the main aim. Indeed, it is often preferred that the victim remain alive during the process. When body parts, including internal organs, are removed while the victim is still alive it is believed that the power of the resultant medicine will be greatly enhanced. Depending on the wants of potential customers, the instructions that the sangomas give specifics.

“Sangomas seldom do the killing themselves. The order will include not only specifications as to which particular body part or parts are required — testicles for virility purposes, fat from the breasts or abdomen for luck, tongues to smooth the path to a lover’s heart — but the very specific manner in which they are to be collected. “The use of human body parts for medicinal purposes is based in the belief that it is possible to appropriate the life force of one person through its literal consumption by another. For this reason, a victim is often carefully chosen — not just any person’s penis as a cure for male infertility, for instance, but that of a man with several healthy children.”

Those who grew up in Zimbabwe urban areas will recall how the shadow of ritual murder has never been far off the horizon. Some, no doubt, knowledge of the stories of businessmen who are said to have suddenly turned rich after they lost a spouse or a child. That child or any other loved one, is assumed to be the blood sacrifice that was necessary for their businesses to turn a sudden corner.

Such perceptions of course, maybe nothing but a jealous rumour, but they are not helped by actual cases like that of Robert Tazvireva, a bottle store and general dealership owner in Magunje who allegedly instructed Samuel Mushonga in 2017 to murder his own sister so he could enhance his business.

After Mushonga had allegedly fatally stabbed his sister and hacked off her head, he delivered it to Tazvireva who told him to hide it in a nearby bush. Such instances have helped convince many that businesspeople profit from the spilling of blood. “‘If the business is not doing well, get a boy or a girl’s head — someone who has a future — and your business will have a future too,” said Dr Gordon Chavunduka time president of the Zimbabwean Traditional Healers Association, once said.

Those who grew up in Bulawayo in the late 90s will remember the myth of men who reportedly drove around the city with a blood-sucking frog, looking for unsuspecting victims to profit from.  While such urban legends have never been confirmed, they are an entertaining reminder that people live on the constant lookout for people trying to profit off their ritual sacrifice.

“I recall vividly growing up in one township in Zimbabwe. This was just when public transport in the form of the Toyota Hiace taxi had just been introduced in the country,” says Fanuel Hadzidzi of Gender Links. “At that tender age, we were scared to death by the stories doing the rounds in the township of the disappearance of children. We were told how kids were being lured by strangers who promised them some sweets.

“The next thing, their bodies would be found in the bushes with some body parts missing. Rumours were that businesspeople were taking the children’s heads for instance to Durban in South Africa and were trading them off for the taxis. Weren’t we all scared!” With claims of human body parts sold by vendors on the streets of South Africa and other countries, it may be a long time before ritual killings lose their lustre to those trying to make a quick dollar.

Foreign Affairs Minister SB Moyo throws ED ally Delish Nguwaya under the bus: Video. In a statement issued on Monday, General Moyo said his ministry has it on good authority that Nguwaya is a holder of a normal green passport. Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Retired Major General Sibusio Moyo has denied social media reports that jailed businessman Delish Nguwaya is a holder of a diplomatic passport.

He invited anyone with evidence to contact his office. Over the weekend former tourism minister, Walter Mzembi demanded that President Emmerson Mnangagwa explain how a man with a chequered history could acquire the precious document. Nguwaya is currently in remand prison after he was denied bail when he was arrested over a week ago on charges of fraudulently acquiring a US$42 million tender to supply Covid-19 testing kits and equipment to the government.

He is also accused of lying that Drax International, a company in which he is the local country representative, was a pharmaceutical company when the firm was only involved in consultancy work.  “Mr. President! Please explain why this thief holds a diplomatic passport?” Mzembi asked.

“Despite repeated pleas and submissions for Oliver Mtukudzi to the then Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mmbengegwi to consider a diplomatic passport for this cultural icon (Mtukudzi), my ministry and ZTA (Zimbabwe Tourism Authority), were given a flat NO. Uyu (Nguwaya) akazokosha kupfura Tuku nhai? (So, Nguwaya is more important than Tuku!”
