FastJet Zimbabwe warns of shutting down. The company says their hopes are pinned on the availability of their foreign currency stuck at the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. FastJet Zimbabwe has warned they might close down their business and cease to operate by the beginning of September if the economic situation doesn’t improve. Part of the statement by the company read:

“If flight operations do not restart to sustainable levels by the beginning of September or the company is unable to access hard currency from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe through repayment against the company’s historical legacy loans, it will cease to be a going concern.”

“Therefore, in the event that the company is unable to find alternative solutions before 31 August 2020, then the directors believe the company would be unable to continue trading as a going concern beyond 31 August 2020,” FastJet Zimbabwe said.

Man United crash Bournemouth 5 – 2

Greenwood, 18, equalised for the hosts after Junior Stanislas’ shock 15th-minute opener before scoring United’s fourth with a superb effort after half-time when he took on Diego Rico on the edge of the area and cut a right-footed shot back across goal into the far corner.

Mason Greenwood scored twice in the Premier League for the first time as Manchester United came from behind to beat Bournemouth 5-2 and increase the Cherries’ relegation worries.

Marcus Rashford had put United 2-1 in front from the penalty spot and Anthony Martial then increased the advantage with a brilliant curling effort into the top corner just before the break.

In an action-packed game, Joshua King pulled one back for Bournemouth with a penalty four minutes after the interval, but Eddie Howe’s men crumbled to an eighth successive away defeat after Arnaut Danjuma had what would have been an equaliser disallowed for offside.

Bruno Fernandes scored United’s fifth with a free-kick from the edge of the area. United front three outscoring Liverpool’s. It was the first time United had scored five in a Premier League game since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first match in charge, a 5-1 win at Cardiff in December 2018. It also extended their unbeaten run to 16 games, stretching back to the home defeat by Burnley on 22 January.

Martial and Rashford – who netted for the first time since the resumption – both have 20 goals for the season and, together with Greenwood’s contribution of 15, they have now scored four more than champions Liverpool’s much-vaunted front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino in 2019-20.

United have not scored six since 2011 but came close to achieving it on Saturday. Rashford had a second goal ruled out for offside and keeper Aaron Ramsdale produced smart saves in injury-time to turn away a Paul Pogba free-kick and a Fernandes shot that was heading for the corner.

It is the first time the hosts have won three successive Premier League games this season and they seem to be hitting form at exactly the right time as they chase a top-four finish.

Defensive issues remain for United

Former skipper Roy Keane reacted to the goal United conceded at Tottenham last month by saying defender Harry Maguire and goalkeeper David de Gea should not be allowed to return home on the team bus, so appalled was the Irishman by their tame efforts.

It is fair to assume Keane would not have been impressed by Bournemouth’s opener either. Maguire lost possession inside his own box, before being nutmegged by Stanislas close to the goalline, and the Bournemouth man then managed to squeeze the ball past De Gea at his near post.

The same United pair then combined to mess up what should have been a routine clearance that would have resulted in a first-half equaliser for the Cherries had Dominic Solanke not been flagged offside.

Solskjaer heaped on his defence in his programme notes but, on this evidence, there is work to do before they can be classed in remotely the same bracket as Liverpool and Manchester City.

Vardy scores a brace as he reaches 100 PL goals

Vardy scores a brace as he reaches 100 PL goals. The striker tapped home a Harvey Barnes cross from close range to bring up his top-flight century as the Foxes won for the first time since the restart. Jamie Vardy scored his 100th and 101st Premier League goals as Leicester boosted their hopes of achieving a top-four Premier League finish with victory over a lacklustre Crystal Palace.

Having failed to find the net in three games since the Premier League’s resumption, Vardy then added a second, running clear of the Palace defence before chipping a neat finish past Vicente Guaita.

Kelechi Iheanacho had given the home side the lead, side-footing home a superb, low left-wing cross from Youri Tielemens to claim his second goal in as many games. This came after a fairly drab first half in which Justin James had struck the bar with a fierce drive for the home side, but little else of note happened.

It is a much-needed win for City, who had seen their grip on a top-four spot weaken following two draws and a loss since the restart. It puts them six points clear of fifth-placed Wolves, who face Arsenal later on Saturday.

It was another disappointing display from Palace, who set out primarily to contain their opponents and then could not impose themselves in order to alter the outcome once they fell behind. Gary Cahill came closest to salvaging something from the game for them with a downward header, saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

After winning their first game back, Roy Hodgson‘s side have now lost three on the bounce – a run that surely ends any hope they had of snatching a Europa League qualification spot. Vardy brought up his 100th Premier League goal in his 206th appearance – not quick enough to place him in the division’s top 10 fastest to the milestone.

That table is led by the Premier League’s all-time record goalscorer Alan Shearer, who hit the century mark in just 124 matches. What separates Vardy from his peers in the centurion club is the route he took to reach the top flight, which saw him rise rapidly from non-league football with Stocksbridge Park Steels and Halifax, via Fleetwood, to the Foxes.

He probably will not have had an easier finish in his entire career than the one presented to him for his 100th goal, with Barnes forcing a mistake from Palace and winning the ball before laying on an open goal for the striker to find.

His second goal was classic Vardy, though, with the striker drawing on his pace to beat the defence, and his deft touch to finish – indicative of him at his best. It is a timely return to goalscoring form, for both the former England international and his club.

Having scored 17 goals in 19 games before the turn of the year, his form fell off a cliff in 2020, bringing him just two more goals in 10 matches. Leicester won just two of those to leave their grip on a top-four place looking very precarious.

But with Vardy back scoring, and Iheanacho a capable and willing foil, suddenly things look a lot rosier for the Foxes.

Palace limping over the line

Having comfortably beaten a dire Bournemouth team before suffering at the hands of a rampant Liverpool side on the cusp of the title, Palace’s most telling result so far has been their 1-0 home loss to Burnley.

Expected to take the initiative against a side in a similar league position and with similar qualities to themselves, they were neutered by the Clarets and picked off by one moment of precision – a ploy they know only too well.

Here, they were never in the game, barring a half-chance or two – Cahill’s header and Luca Milivojevic free-kick that he curled just wide of the top corner.

Their big issue is an ongoing inability to get anything remotely approaching his best out of their most potent attacking weapon, Wilfried Zaha, who has only shown in flashes this campaign the kind of form that courted admiring glances from elsewhere.

You would barely notice he was playing, such was his position on the periphery of the action, although Christian Benteke and top-scorer Jordan Ayew also did little to impact the game.

Only Norwich (16) and Watford (14) have failed to score in more different Premier League games than Palace this season (13).

However, having earned enough points now to remain in the division for another year, largely thanks to what is usually an extremely robust defence, such attacking issues are ones Hodgson has at least one – albeit shortened – off-season to rectify.

Man of the match – Jamie Vardy (Leicester)

Leicester double post-restart goals tally

  • Leicester scored more goals in this match (3) than they had in their three previous games combined since the Premier League restart (2).
  • Leicester have remained unbeaten in all of their home games against London sides in a single Premier League season for the first time since 2000-01.
  • After a run of four consecutive Premier League victories, Crystal Palace have lost their last three by an aggregate score of 8-0.
  • Crystal Palace mustered just one shot on target in this match, by defender Gary Cahill.
  • The Eagles failed to score in the first half for the 25th time this season – more than any other side.
  • Kelechi Iheanacho has scored in back-to-back Premier League games for Leicester, having netted in just one of his previous 12 in the competition.
  • Harvey Barnes provided his seventh and eighth Premier League assists of the season, more than any other Leicester player.

Norwich suffer a 1 – 0 defeat at the hands of Brighton Hove

The Canaries players appeared devastated at full time as the significance of the result struck home – with Todd Cantwell remaining on the pitch for 10 minutes after the final whistle Norwich boss Daniel Farke says it is “unrealistic” to talk about avoiding relegation from the Premier League after Saturday’s home defeat by Brighton.

While Leandro Trossard’s winner means the Seagulls are now well-placed to see in a fourth straight season in the top flight, Norwich are seven points from safety with five games remaining.

“It was more or less our last chance to get back in the mix and we are disappointed,” Farke said. “It was more like the performance we ask for. The story of our game was the story of our season, we didn’t find the cutting edge and we then make a big mistake.

“After a few losses, we don’t have the right to make any fighting messages or to make any unrealistic claims. We are not naive, lets show our pride.” Farke dropped Teemu Pukki and Cantwell – his two leading scorers – but the move backfired as the Premier League’s bottom club mustered just one serious attempt on target.

Belgian winger Trossard settled a scrappy match with a smart finish, sweeping home Aaron Mooy’s perfect delivery in what was Brighton’s first genuine attack. Nineteen-year-old substitute Adam Idah was denied an equaliser when he headed against the post in stoppage time.

Brighton’s third away win of the season lifts them nine points above the relegation zone. This was a must-win game if Norwich were to revive their fading hopes of staying in the Premier League. Instead, they fell to a fifth straight league defeat without scoring.

They can still reach 36 points, and 17th-placed Watford have 28 points. But it is hard to see where their next goal – never mind win – is going to come from.

This was the first of three successive matches against teams in or just above the relegation zone yet Farke opted to start without Pukki and Cantwell for his side’s fifth match in 15 days.

Finland forward Pukki has scored 11 of his team’s 25 league goals this season, but none in his past 10 league and cup games, while midfielder Cantwell has also chipped in with some key goals, including efforts against Manchester City, Arsenal and Wolves.

Farke said the changes were to freshen up the side after an error-ridden 4-0 midweek defeat at Arsenal but there was a distinct familiarity to the way his team huffed and puffed without creating much.

Cuban forward Onel Hernandez was lively without testing keeper Mat Ryan, while Republic of Ireland Under-21 forward Idah was only denied by a post in the dying moments.

In two of their final three games before football was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic, Norwich beat Leicester in the Premier League and Tottenham on penalties in the FA Cup.

Since the restart, they have failed to register a single point and are going backwards. While Norwich have faltered since the restart, Brighton have thrived.

The Seagulls were just two points above the relegation zone when the season was suspended. They are now nine points clear of 18th-placed Aston Villa and 19th-placed Bournemouth, both on 27 points.

Graham Potter’s side have reached 36 points – a tally that has been good enough to stay up for the past three seasons – with five games to go, meaning the pressure of hosting champions Liverpool and second-placed Manchester City in back-to-back fixtures is eased considerably.

“No I don’t think it makes us safe,” said Potter afterwards. “It’s a huge win for us and a hard-fought three points.”

Brighton carved out more and better openings than their hosts, the move for Trossard’s composed finish coming straight off the training ground. Yet once again they impressed especially at the back.

With Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster dominant at the centre of defence, they came away with an eighth clean sheet of the season and are now unbeaten in five straight league away games.

And despite 11 places separating the two sides in the table, Brighton have conceded only as many goals – 44 – as fourth-placed Chelsea.

First double over Norwich since 1951-52 – the stats

  • Brighton have completed their first league double over Norwich since 1951-52 (they won 2-0 at the Amex in November).
  • Norwich have failed to score in three consecutive home Premier League games for the first time ever.
  • Brighton enjoyed their first win in their past nine away Premier League games (D5 L3).
  • Norwich have lost each of their past six games in all competitions, the worst run suffered by Daniel Farke in his managerial career.
  • Brighton have registered three consecutive away clean sheets in all competitions for the first time since December 2016.
  • Norwich have failed to score in 16 Premier League games this season, more than any other side.

Temba Mliswa drags Parly speaker Mudenda to court. Mliswa, in the urgent chamber application, seeks to have the decision set aside with costs and pending the final determination of the application, Mliswa wants his suspension lifted.

Independent Norton legislator Temba Mliswa has dragged Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda to court challenging a decision to suspend him for six sittings on allegations of disorderly conduct.

Mliswa argued that Mudenda’s actions were ultra vires constitutional provisions that mandate him to abide by standing orders which he had breached by suspending him. He said according to the standing orders, Mudenda is only limited to impose punishment pertaining to a particular sitting of Parliament on that particular day. Mliswa was suspended by Mudenda almost a fortnight ago.

Khupe barred from holding her MDC-T Congress. The decision by authorities to stop the party from going ahead with its extra-ordinary congress followed a recent letter to the government by Khupe – in which she asked for clearance from the Health Ministry for the gathering, which was due to be attended by 4 500 delegates.

The government has barred interim MDC leader Thokozani Khupe from holding the party’s planned extra-ordinary congress slated for July 31 – until the coronavirus pandemic is under control in the country, the Daily News reports.

The acting permanent secretary in the ministry of Health and Child Care, Gibson Mhlanga, said in response to Khupe that it was impossible for the MDC to hold its congress as the gathering would violate Covid-19 regulations.

“Your request for clearance to hold an extraordinary congress on 31 July, 2020 is not approved. “We are in a Covid-19 lockdown and one of the requirements is that there must not be any public gatherings of more than 50 people. The delegates that you are indicating exceed the recommended number.

“Based on this requirement, it is, therefore, impossible to hold the meeting in this environment,” Mhlanga said. In the wake of the ban, Khupe’s spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni said that the party was consulting its lawyers to chart the way forward.

“We definitely want to comply with the court ruling, but then again we are faced with a situation where the executive arm of government has told us that this is not possible at the moment.

“We have engaged our lawyers who are currently dealing with the matter. “The party will, however, continue with its preparations as scheduled, until we have been shown the direction by the legal team,” Phugeni told the Daily News.

A fortnight ago, Khupe had attempted to move the planned congress from this month to between September 4 and 6 this year, citing the national lockdown, whose regulations bar large gatherings – before she reverted to the original date of July 31.

Jonathan Moyo: Keep your diary open for 31st July

Jonathan Moyo: Keep your diary open for 31st July. Many voices in the country have been rallying the citizenry to revolt against the government over human rights violations, and the worsening economic and humanitarian crisis.

Exiled former cabinet minister, Jonathan Moyo has suggested that 31 July 2020 would be eventful hence the need for the ruling ZANU PF to memorise it.

31 July is a day before the second anniversary of August 1 shootings during which soldiers shot and killed opposition MDC protesters who had thronged to the streets over the alleged manipulation of the 2018 presidential election in favour of President Mnangagwa.

A Motlanthe Commission was instituted and made recommendations which are yet to be implemented. Moyo posted on Twitter saying:

Hello @zanupf_patriots. Keep your diary open for 31 July 2020! #ZanupfMustGo

The party responded saying it will still be in power yonder 31 July 2020. It responded:

All we know is that on 1 August 2020 and long after we will still be the ruling party.

In response to Moyo’s tweet, Caesar Zvayi, Zimpapers editor echoed the words of the former minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development himself during his tenure in government. He said:

Dream on. Only Zanu-PF can remove Zanu-PF. I’m not saying there’s no reason to protest, we all know things could be better. If the planned protest is abt pressing Gvt to improve livelihoods, fair & fine, but if its about regime change, forget & smile. Let’s talk Aug 1 @ProfJNMoyo

Moyo responded saying:

Cde @caesarzvayi every journey starts with the first step. The 31 July 2020 is not the end but the start of the day. No problem if it turns out to be a long day in calendar terms. But one day is one day. ZanuPF’s moment of reckoning has come. Nothing lasts forever!

In 2015, responding to then MDC spokesperson Obert Gutu, Moyo suggested that ZANU PF would govern forever. He said: You’re damn right Obert Gutu the MDC is here to stay and ZANU PF is here to govern and things will stay that way!

Arsenal beat Wolves 2 – 0 as Alexandre Lacazette scores

Arsenal beat Wolves 2 – 0 as Alexandre Lacazette scores. The 18-year-old, who delighted manager Mike Arteta by pledging his future to the club, demonstrated why he is so highly regarded by scoring his first Premier League goal – a sweet, left-foot volley just before the interval.

Bukayo Saka celebrated signing a new long-term contract by helping Arsenal deliver a blow to Wolverhampton Wanderers’ hopes of Champions League football next season.

And the Gunners made it four successive victories when Alexandre Lacazette capped a fine team display by turning on fellow substitute Joe Willock’s pass and firing emphatically past Wolves keeper Rui Patricio with five minutes left.

Wolves had been hoping to build on an impressive restart to the season but knew the pressure was on to win after fellow top-four contenders Leicester City and Manchester United recorded victories before kick-off at Molineux.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were not at their best. Adama Traore had their clearest chance after the break when he raced in on Arsenal keeper Emiliano Martinez from Diogo Jota’s pass, but the Spanish forward lifted his finish over the top in a wasteful fashion.

Wolves are still sixth in the Premier League table on 52 points, but seventh-placed Arsenal are now only three points behind.

Olivier Giroud and Barkley scores as Chelsea slide back into the top 4

Olivier Giroud and Barkley scores as Chelsea slide back into the top 4. The result lifts the Blues back up to fourth in the table, after they were temporarily leapfrogged by Manchester United. Chelsea boosted their Champions League qualification hopes with a comfortable win over Premier League strugglers Watford.

Nigel Pearson’s side remains a point above the relegation zone but have played a game more than Aston Villa, who travel to Liverpool on Sunday (16:30 BST).

Olivier Giroud opened the scoring for the Blues, latching on to Ross Barkley’s clever pass and steering a left-foot shot into the bottom right corner.

While Watford worked hard to contain the hosts they offered little to suggest they were capable of a first win at Stamford Bridge since 1986.

And they fell further behind before the break, with Etienne Capoue’s rash challenge on Christian Pulisic resulting in a Chelsea penalty that Willian duly converted.

Thereafter it was relatively plain sailing for Frank Lampard’s side, who rounded off the scoring when Barkley found the top left corner from Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross. The Blues have now won three of their four games since the top flight resumed in June.

Chaos as Peterhouse private school touches off racism storm

Chaos as Peterhouse private school touches off racism storm. Recent reports suggest that the Anglican-run Peterhouse Group of Schools has experienced rampant cases of segregation as its white leaders allegedly treat students and teachers with racial bias. Several other top schools in Harare and Bulawayo are reportedly having the same problem of racism, which can be traced to the country’s colonial past.

Racism in private schools has reared its ugly head once again with a Marondera-based institution, Peterhouse Group of Schools, being accused of entrenching the discriminatory practice.

Peterhouse touched off a storm when it recently issued a statement following the murder of 46-year-old George Floyd by white police officers in the United States on May 25, saying the school was against discrimination on the basis of race. The statement attracted a flurry of comments on social media platforms, with former students reliving traumatic days at the school at the hands of white teachers and students.

A former student at the top private school, Nakiso Gwatidzo, recently said those who ran the school had stratified the institution along racial lines reminiscent of the colonial era.  “Peterhouse harbours and exercises some of the most racist and discriminatory behaviour I have encountered in my lifetime. It’s both individual and institutional; addressing one is not enough,” said Gwatidzo.

It has since emerged that secretive quota systems, a ban in indigenous languages on school premises and relegation of black staff to non-decision making positions are some of the subtle racist tendencies that are pervasive in some schools in Zimbabwe.

Eurocentric values of neatness, where black students, especially girls, are expected to have particular hairstyles, and curricula that degrade local languages and indigenous knowledge are reportedly still being rigorously enforced.

Selection of black learners in sports such as hockey, cricket, rugby and soccer is also allegedly still being defined on blurred but visible racial lines. “You can’t expect the individual act of ‘loving your neighbour’ to stamp out discrimination when the system still treats your neighbour like everything about them matters less. That system cannot complete the teaching of what love is.

“‘An Anglican school has absolutely no place for racism or any other form of discrimination’ – what? Did you not post a picture this month of a time black people weren’t even allowed in this particular Anglican school? And suddenly Anglicanism is the primary characteristic Peterhouse has that disallows racism? Anglicanism? In Zimbabwe? How about being in this country, where black lives were lost in (the) First and Second Chimurenga to save today’s black lives?”

Contacted for comment last week, Peterhouse Rector Jon Trafford denied the allegations.  “As a group of schools we are very conscious that prejudice and discrimination continue to exist within our communities, and that it is within our collective interest as a school community to confront and tackle these issues.

“An Anglican school has absolutely no place for racism or any other form of discrimination. We have promoted and continue to promote the belief that all people are created in God’s image and have infinite value.”

However, Gwatidzo said Peterhouse was notorious for sidelining black students. Alumni of some of the schools, including some aggrieved staffers, have in recent weeks been volunteering information on some of the contentious practices.

Mrs Marcellina Muchemwa, who sat on several ATS boards, told The Sunday Mail that racism in Zimbabwe’s private schools has been subtle, particularly after the Fast-Track Land Reform Programme.

The land redistribution exercise corrected colonial injustices where the white minority class occupied vast tracts of arable land while millions of blacks were relegated to infertile soils in places formerly referred to as “reserve areas”.

“Zimbabwe’s private schools were the last bastion of whiteness and as the population (of white people) shrank there was a need to reinforce the long-held beliefs that white culture was superior and had to be preserved at all cost,” said Mrs Muchemwa.

“This was somewhat of a dilemma as the black student populations increased. The culture clash had to be managed through careful secretive quota systems and relegation of black staff and students to non-decision making positions.

“Black influence on the school cultures and ideology was to be kept to the barest minimum. War-cries were kept white, hairstyles for African students were restricted and local languages were banned on school premises.”

There was need to openly address racism, she added, in order to vanquish the vestiges of white supremacy.

“(We need) a dialogue not limited to the school system but one that cuts across the social strata. For it to be genuine, no one should engage from a defensive standpoint. Everyone should engage with an open and forgiving heart. A heart that will tell the truth in love and a heart that will receive that truth.

“It’s time that people hear each other if our quest for a truly equal society is ever to be realised. This conversation, rooted in truth, presents a marvellous opportunity to now build relationships that truly see past the colour of a person’s skin.”

Repeated efforts to get a comment from ATS chair Mr Tim Middleton were fruitless as he was said to be busy. The body had not responded to e-mailed questions by the time of going to print.

A parent who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear that her children may be victimised said racism was rife in private schools and called for urgent reforms as Zimbabwe was a democratic nation where all races are supposed to be treated equally.

“Black students are mostly entertained in soccer while hockey, cricket and rugby are predominantly white sports. Something must be done to address this race problem in private schools where blackness is seriously under attack by white school administrators,” she said.

Private schools have always been rebutting claims of racism. Primary and Secondary Education Minister Ambassador Cain Mathema warned that any school guilty of racial bias would be shut down.

“Zimbabwe is a diverse country where all races and ethnicities are embraced equally. We have to live in harmony whether we are black or white. “We don’t want anyone discriminating on basis of race. If there is any such learning institution, I will close that school.”

Remain alert, citizens urged as Covid-19 cases rise every day

Remain alert, citizens urged as Covid-19 cases rise every day. This comes as the country recorded another COVID-19-related death and 73 new cases yesterday. The total number of coronavirus cases now stands at 698, including eight deaths.

Zimbabwe needs to strengthen and refocus on measures it adopted at the beginning of the COVID-19-induced lockdown in March if it is to avert a local transmission crisis, a senior government official has said.

The deceased is a 21-year-old female with no history of travel and had co-morbidities. Of the 73 new cases, 55 were returnees from South Africa, three each from Botswana and Mozambique, two from the United States, one each from Australia and Zambia, and eight local transmissions.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail yesterday, Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care Dr John Mangwiro urged citizens to remain alert, continue practising good hygiene and social distancing, as the country is set to experience a spike in local transmissions.

These have been on the rise lately, with the country recording 31 cases of local transmissions between June 18-19. The total number of Zimbabwe’s Covid-19 cases attributed to local transmissions is now 107, something that has seen authorities raising alarm.

According to Dr Agnes Mahomva, the Chief Coordinator of the National Response to the Covid-19 pandemic, as of Friday, 77 cases were directly linked to returnees while 22 were a result of community transmissions. Experts attributed the rise in local transmissions to failure by many people to adhere to Level 2 lockdown measures and the increased mingling of locals and returnees over the past few weeks.

Issues of sanitation and hygiene, and the fact that the country is currently in the influenza season, have also been highlighted as worsening the situation. Said Dr Mangwiro: “The upsurge is a sign that people are mixing up so we are saying let us stay at home where necessary and continue practising hygiene, social distancing and correctly wearing face masks.

“For those that are coming from outside, they should adhere to quarantine measures and not mix with others before they are tested. This is a sign that we need to restrengthen and refocus on the measures that we had in the beginning.”

However, he was quick to say that presently there were no discussions of reverting back to strict lockdown measures. “These issues need to be balanced, the economy and Covid-19, so we are saying at individual levels one must make it a priority to make sure they are protected and they protect their loved ones,” he said.

Zimbabwe is under Level 2 lockdown, where both formal and informal businesses have reopened. Restaurants have also been allowed to serve sit-in customers. Epidemiologist, Dr Portia Manangazira also said the surge in transmission was expected due to water and sanitation infrastructure which is inadequate, as well as returnees.

“We were saved by the lockdown as this helped by keeping the number of transmissions low. However, we are noticing that water, sanitation and hygiene issues have become a major challenge and have contributed to the spike in local transmissions,” said Dr Manangazira.

“There is also the issue of returnees in quarantine centres. Some returnees are not adhering to regulations. “Our treatment centres are also overwhelmed so all this can contribute to local transmissions. The rise in local transmission has also coincided with the influenza season. So we are expecting an increase — that is the reason why we need all hands to be on the deck.”

Dr Manangazira said people needed to look at how coronavirus cases jumped from the first 100 to 200, highlighting the demand for “tightening up”.

There were 58 new cases from June 28 to July 3. Local transmissions rose above 100 on May 25, when 64 new cases were reported. It took exactly a week for the cases to rise above 200 when the tally reached 204 on June 1. The next 100 cases, which took the case count to 314, were reached over an eight-day period to June 9.

It took another eight days for the cases to reach 401 on June 17. When the cases were 567, 474 were imported, mainly from South Africa, Botswana and the UK, while 77 were local transmissions.

Dr Manangazira said Government recently carried out an assessment of high-risk areas.  “With the help of WHO (World Health Organisation) we, for the past six to eight weeks, have been doing high-risk assessments in areas of high respiratory and influenza-like illnesses,” she said.

“Areas such as Matabeleland South were in the green, meaning they were low-risk areas of influenza and respiratory illnesses. However, we have realised that they are hotspots for Covid-19 given the Beitbridge and Plumtree borders. So we will be on high alert in such areas.

“Another assessment being done by the Government on a number of households will also shed more light on the transmission of the virus.”

The government will also conduct random sampling on 2 000 households in communities across the country. Dr Mahomva, said the samples would be used to generalise the whole population. “Just like most countries, we had challenges on testing and we could not test everyone in the country,” she said.

“So, sample testing will be used to generalise the positivity of coronavirus in Zimbabwe. It will be done in different communities in the country. We will use the sample to gauge how we have done as a country.”

Dr Mahomva said it was hoped that the sample would solve the conundrum of sporadic local transmission cases and give a clearer picture. Zimbabwe recently allowed formal and informal sectors to operate, opening up places such as Mbare Musika, which normally has an influx of informal traders and their customers.

Relaxation of lockdown measures has also seen an increase of traffic into Central Business Districts (CBDs) in most towns and cities. It is now 107 days since the country recorded its first coronavirus case on March 20. Overall by Friday Zimbabwe had done 75 485 tests – 43 373 RDT and 32 112 PCR.

Comparatively, in the Southern African region as at July 3, Zambia had recorded 1 632 cases with 30 deaths while South Africa had 168 061 cases and 2 844 deaths, and Mozambique had 918 cases and six deaths.

Namibia does not have any fatalities from the current 293 cases, while in Botswana one life has been lost from the 227 cases.

In Malawi, which eased lockdown measures to allow voting in the June 23 elections, the number of new Covid-19 cases has continued to increase with 417 new cases recorded since 22 June representing a 49 per cent increase.

Good news for HIV patients as NAC intervenes

Good news for HIV patients as NAC intervenes. HIV and Aids intervention programmes came under threat when the country went into lockdown on March 30, as there were challenges in accessing anti-retroviral treatment.

The National Aids Council (NAC) has come up with measures to ensure people living with HIV are not affected by restrictions on movements meant to curb the coronavirus when seeking anti-retroviral drugs.

NAC chief executive officer Dr Benard Madzima said the council had facilitated travel documents for patients. “Covid-19 had a negative effect, especially in the first weeks of lockdown from March 30, where our clients ended up not being able to travel to collect their medications,” he said.

“But we then worked with various sectors to make sure that either they got refills for three months or they got the necessary papers to travel to get their drugs.”

NAC also alerted authorities enforcing the lockdown to waiver travel restrictions for people seeking medication. There were also challenges in accessing the foreign currency needed to import commodities and equipment crucial for HIV and Aids response initiatives.

“Most of our commodities and equipment is imported. The shortage of foreign currency has affected NAC from the aspect of ensuring that we have commodities, ARV drugs, laboratory equipment to staff salaries,” he said.

“We continue to engage our partners — UNAids, UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), Global Fund, Pepfar (President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief) and USAid — to make sure we do not run out of the essential commodities for HIV response,” he said. NAC is mandated to facilitate a multi-sectoral response to HIV and Aids in the country.

Sha Sha thanks her fans. Kudos for her victory at the just-ended Black Entertainment Television (BET) awards. We congratulate her for winning the Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act gong. The big news in showbiz right now is on Amapiano queen, ShaSha, real name Charmaine Shamiso Mapimbiro.

The triumph was sweet news to everyone. “What just happened . . . A BET, thank you my people back home all over the world,” she tweeted after the victory. No, it is us that need to thank you for the hard work and success. It certainly is your victory but you made the country proud, raising our flag high. The rest of Southern Africa and Africa at large are impressed.

You are a jewel! You became a winner first by virtue of your nomination, the first one for Zimbabwe at the BET awards. The actual win was the icing on the cake.

Battling and securing a victory against some of the finest new voices on the globe, who include Rema (Nigeria), Young T & Bugsey (UK), Hatik (France), Celeste (UK) and Stacy (France), means only the sky is the limit for ShaSha.

As it stands, she is simply unstoppable! Keep setting the pace and making history. We wish to get more gongs from you, the Grammy included.

The National Arts Council has since sent a laudatory message but we hope they, and other relevant authorities, go an extra mile to honour this outstanding daughter of the soil.

Chero kumupa ka piece kemunda zvinoita futi (Even giving her a small piece of land). Kikikiki. Certainly, she can create a balance between her studio time and tilling the land.

We are sure Minister of Youth, Sport, Art and Recreation Kirsty Coventry would not mind facilitating an initiative meant to pay tribute to ShaSha. After all, she once received similar honour during her swimming days after smashing the World record at the Olympics held in Beijing, China.

ShaSha has made her mark in the entertainment industry and has become a household name. Any Amapiano song which features her vocals becomes an instant favourite for many music lovers.

She is signed under DJ Maphorisa’s record label, and has worked with numerous artistes in the genre, including Kabza, Lord Phorry and MFR Souls, to name just but a few.

The BET Awards, which are in their 20th year, were held over the weekend through virtual platforms due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has enforced social distancing in a lot of countries.

They were hosted by comedian and actress Amanda Seales, with performances from stars like Alicia Keys, Chloe x Halle, DaBaby, D Smoke, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Jonathan McReynolds, Kane Brown, Lil Wayne, Megan Thee Stallion, Roddy Ricch, SiR, Summer Walker, Usher and Wayne Brady.

The ceremony celebrates achievements in entertainment and honours music, sports television and movies.

Talent that didn’t explode: Shingi Kawondera

Talent that didn’t explode: Shingi Kawondera. Grabowski discovered Kawondera in the sprawling dormitory town of Chitungwiza in the 1990s, when the striker, then a raw teenager, was turning out for Cone Textiles and the coach immediately enlisted the player. Thanks to Grabowski, Kawondera made his first move to Europe in 1999, when he signed for Polish side Gornik Zabrze.

It took less than five minutes for Shingi Kawondera to convince Wieslaw Grabowski that he was a gem, but the Polish mentor would go on to observe with regret as this fine talent failed to transform into a real diamond he had envisaged.

Kawondera went on to play for AEP Paphos in Cyprus, Gaziantespor in Turkey and SuperSport United in South Africa, in a topsy-turvy career that saw him retiring at Harare giants CAPS United in 2012. However, Grabowski — the man who promoted a number of talented footballers including the legendary Norman Mapeza — still has regrets over Kawondera.

The Polish mentor believes Kawondera was at the peak of his powers and good enough to play for any top team in the world, but the dreadlocked forward disappointed and failed to play to his potential.

“Shingi was a brilliant player, top player, but the problem was his environment. I still emphasise that the boy was good enough to walk into any top team, Manchester United included, but he was his own worst enemy,” Grabowski told The Sunday Mail Sport.

“Football-wise, he could manage, but off the field, he couldn’t. At some point, he chose to work with some crooks disguised as football agents”. The DT Africa United director recounted his greatest moments with local players.

“My greatest football moments were whenever players under me succeeded in the world. Like when Mapeza ended up playing in the Champions League. “Not only Mapeza, but Dickson Choto and Takesure Chinyama, who did well in Poland. Costa Nhamoinesu also went on to do well in the Czech Republic.

“I have a good history with most of these European clubs. You see, if you are good at scouting for talent these clubs always look for you. “They (European clubs) know that I don’t bring them bad players, they trust me. It’s a trust that has been built over the years.”

Kawondera, who played for Zimbabwe at the 2006 African Cup of Nations finals in Egypt, has a chequered football history. While his penchant for life in the fast lane is well-documented, some football decisions he made, especially after dumping Grabowski as his agent, also cost the highly regarded forward.

After dumping Grabowski for South African agent Mike Makaab, Kawondera had an opportunity to join Premier League side West Ham United in 2006, but he chose Gaziantespor of Turkey.

He still regrets that decision, as much as he also wants to quickly forget about his past lifestyle. The former Warriors star striker admitted to making some mistakes in his life in an interview with this publication in August 2018. “I was still a boy when I went to Europe. I also didn’t have much time with my mother who divorced my father when I was only eight.

“So, I guess I lacked motherly advice when I needed it most. During my career, I would come back home for two or three weeks and I would spend most of the time drinking and having fun,” Kawondera said.

Now 38, Kawondera has retired from the game and is staying in Ruwa, where he is planning on starting a football academy. And Grabowski still thinks of this gem he discovered in Chitungwiza.

“(The) First time I saw Shingi, I told myself this was real talent. I also picked Elliot Matsika and Musareka Jenitala from that stream. “I introduced them to professional football and had high hopes for Shingi. Any team in the world, he could play, but at some point he lost it.

“Now I can only pray for him to do well in his post-playing career. Zimbabwean players, some of them, they don’t see the future. Their imagination levels are very low. But in football you have to understand that not all players are sharp.”

Apart from acknowledging his past mistakes, Kawondera still regards Grabowski highly. “Grabowski is a pillar in Zimbabwean football. One thing Grabowski is good at is training players individually. He taught us sport science back then. “He would emphasise on the need to maintain weight and how to stay clean and safe from diseases.

“He trained me individually to the extent that I could at the one-time train on my own and still play for the Warriors when I was clueless. “Whatever I did in football, I owe it all to Grabowski,” a thankful Kawondera said.

Such was Kawondera’s huge potential to explode that he was not only Zimbabwe’s best player at the CAF African Under-17 championships in 1999, but was rated among the tournament’s best players, who included a young Michael Essien from eventual winners Ghana.

While Essien would go and feature prominently for Lyon in France and later Chelsea in England and winning championships with both, Kawondera never exploded the way Grabowski and Zimbabweans would have wanted and starred for low-key sides.

Child abuse cases increasing alarmingly at the moment

$

Child abuse cases increasing alarmingly at the moment. Children are being violated almost on a daily basis by the same people who are supposed to love, care and protect them. The statistics are worrying. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says the number of minors abused by their biological fathers rose to 39 in the first three months of this year compared to 33 cases last year. While the eyes of the world are focused on the growing cases and threat of coronavirus, including the associated pain of trying to contain its spread, depraved monsters have been using the distractions to s.e.xually abuse minors.

Similarly, the number of children falling victim to their stepfathers increased to 33 in the same period from 28 a year earlier. What is, however, disturbing is that cases of s.e.xually abused minors now make up between 40 to 60 percent of the overall r@pe cases brought to the attention of hospitals, police and courts countrywide.

In fact, child representative organisations such as Save the Children Zimbabwe, Shamwari yeMwanasikana and Childline Zimbabwe believe that the cases could actually be much higher. Cases are often detected when the child contracts s.e.xually transmitted infections (STIs) or suffers some other complications.

“It is now a cause for concern. The figures keep rising despite numerous police campaigns. More needs to be done so that we bring this to an end,” Zimbabwe Republic Police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told The Sunday Mail Society on Friday. “Most of these cases are happening in homes and the issues are swept under the carpet. Relatives, friends, or neighbours should report such cases so that culprits are brought to book,” he said.

“The number of minors being abused by their fathers has been on the rise over the last few years. We have since stepped up efforts to work with the police through their Victim Friendly Unit so that we try and end this,” adds Save the Children communications and advocacy advisor Ms Sophie Hamandishe. Not so long ago, a single clinic in Harare made shocking revelations after it reported that it had treated nearly 30 000 girls and boys who had been sexually abused within a four-year period.

Society seems divided on why child sexual abuse cases are on the increase. While some point to rituals (juju), others opine factors influencing child sexual violation cases can be traced to a patriarchal society and men’s professed inability to control their s.e.xual desire due to psychological problems. Tapiwa Mapuranga (not real name) recently made a spine-chilling revelation.

“Women are evil! Sometimes they make you take care of another man’s kids; lying they are yours. Personally, if I am to find out, I will revenge in the most bizarre way. If she has children with another man, automatically those kids are not related to me, thus I can marry them,” he declared.

A Hatfield woman, who preferred to identify herself as Mai Chichi due to the sensitivity of this story, said because of the prevalence of abuse cases, she was no longer taking chances. “I love my husband very much, but I have made it a habit that I always inspect my daughter, especially if I spend days away due to work commitments. You never know what these men are capable of doing,” Mai Chichi said, adding: “Several reported cases have taught us to always be alert.”

Shocking

The Sunday Mail Society once had an unnerving encounter with the mother of abused minors. Norah (surname withheld), a mother of two minors aged 10 and five, narrated how her husband of 11 years, a 42-year old cobbler, allegedly r@ped and sodomised his daughters for eight years, which resulted in the abused pair developing health complications.

“I started noting changes in the first child when she was still two. She had challenges relieving herself but I never suspected r@pe, especially by the father,” she said. Years later, she got the shock of her life after she arrived home only to be greeted by the blood-curdling cries of her second-born child, who was in excruciating pain and was covering her private parts.

She could only say to her mother: “mhamha, ndakuvadzwa na daddy (mom dad has injured me)”. “That is when I realised the children were being abused. I have sleepless nights; my daughters’ lives have been destroyed by their monster father. It is heartbreaking. I pray he meets his fate one day,” said the aggrieved mother.

The husband was arrested, but the case was later dismissed in court for lack of evidence, and Norah is still unhappy. There are growing cases of neighbours or family associates that are using their supposedly “fatherly” roles to abuse minors. The recent case of Tonderai Mhandu sums it all up.

Mhandu was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2018 for s.e.xually abusing his neighbour’s 10-year-old minor. He still maintains that he was wrongly convicted. “I was neighbours and friends with a little girl’s father. One day he called me over under the pretext that he needed my help, only to discover it was a trap for them to accuse me of r@pe. I never r@ped her. She is a kid. They are covering what actually happened by falsely accusing me,” he said at Harare Central Prison last week where he is serving his sentence.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! Last year, a 47-year-old man from Montrose, Bulawayo, was arrested for abusing his daughter over a 10-year period. The young girl fell victim when she was in Grade Two. She is now 19-years-old. She was s.e.xually abused by her father each time she asked for pocket money.

The case came to light when the girl, later on, informed her boyfriend about the abuse, who encouraged her to report the matter. She told her mother who then confided in her pastor and was told to report the matter to the police. Similarly, a Kadoma man was recently jailed for 26 years for raping his two daughters aged six and eight while his son watched from December 2017 up to May last year.

In Mutare, a 41-year-old was arraigned before the courts on allegations of r@ping his four-year-old daughter on numerous occasions since 2016 in the absence of the girl’s mother who was at school. None of the accused admits to committing the offences, even after being found guilty by the courts.

Concern

Chief Chivese of Chivhu, born Thomas Makambe, said, “Bogus healers are misleading people into believing powers can be acquired by r@ping their minors. “Often it is the mother of the victim who discovers that the child has been abused but because of our society’s set-up, they are forced to conceal the cases to protect their marriages and keep the family intact.”

Hamandishe weighs in.

“What is most disturbing is these cases are not reported. We have unearthed some cases through tip-offs and encourage the public to alerts us using various communication channels so that we protect future generations,” she said. Some myths misleadingly suggest that if you bed a toddler you will be cured of HIV/Aids, while others argue that it boosts business fortunes by bringing luck.

Traditionalists like Sekuru Friday Chisanyu says such cases, often referred to as “makunakuna” or “mapiye” in our culture, create problems like droughts and all sorts of natural disasters. “One can only get wealth from hard work, not r@ping minors. Any traditional healer who pushes for such evil behaviour should be arrested,” said Sekuru Chisanyu.

Psychologist Dr David Bishau of Africa University said the prevailing economic challenges wer pushing some people to extremes. “There have been suggestions in religious circles linking some of the rape cases to religious beliefs and ritual practices, especially to do with healing, wealth accumulation, fertility and long life, but that is not all true,” explains Dr Bishau.

His counterpart, Kudenga Mugove, who is with the Zimbabwe Open University, said such aggravated practices can only be due to psychological problems. “When one is in a desperate situation, they do not think straight and this is how most people commit crimes,” he said.

Church of Central Africa Presbyterian pastor Gibson Botomani agrees: “I have come across two typical cases linked to juju and mental instability. However, in some instances, these cases are linked to generational curses. Here, the channel of deviance is traced to the first, second or even third generation of forefathers.”

Impact

Victims are traumatised by the abuse itself as well as by the subsequent problems in family, health and appearances in court. This, in turn, affects the child’s life and well-being.

“Years later, if the victim was never taken through proper rehabilitation, you can tell they were once a victim of abuse. In this case, the law has little impact, what is important is to change the thinking patterns of the offenders and society at large,” said talk show host Rebecca Chisamba.

“Abuse has long-term effects on children, which can be physical or psychological. The effects may show immediately or at a later stage in life,” further adds the Save the Children official.
