Victor Matemadanda: West wants to spread COVID-19 using canisters during July 31st demos

Victor Matemadanda: West wants to spread COVID-19 using canisters during July 31st demos. Civic groups and opposition political parties have pegged the day to protest against corruption and the deteriorating economic situation in the country under President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Defence deputy minister and Zanu PF national commissar Victor Matemadanda has claimed that the planned July 31 protests against the government were being funded by the West with the intention of spreading the deadly COVID-19 in the country.

Mnangagwa’s Zanu PF party has admitted that the protests threatened its hegemony, and vowed to unleash the security forces to thwart any dissent after awarding salary increments to army and police personnel. The Zanu PF leader yesterday said he would intensify COVID-19 lockdown in Harare and Bulawayo because of growing COVID-19 infections, but critics say the lockdown would enable the State to clamp down on the planned protests.

On Wednesday, Matemadanda told State media that the protests were a Western project, being bankrolled to the tune of US$300 000 by the hostile governments so that they have an opportunity to use COVID-19 laced canisters to spread the virus in the country.

“We know that they (opposition) have been given more than US$300 000 to sustain the planned demonstration and obviously they are being encouraged to break the law against COVID-19 regulations,” he said.

“Why this is being done, it is not because people are concerned about the ordinary people, but they are trying to bring a narrative first to see how the government is going to react to the demonstrators and obviously cry about the disregard of human rights.”

Matemadanda, who is also secretary-general for war veterans, said the West was not happy that the country had recorded few COVID-19-related deaths. “Zimbabweans should know that those who are funding these demonstrations are worried about why COVID-19 has not killed people in Zimbabwe,” he said.

“And the information that we have got is that they are trying to get firing of tear gas and we are reliably informed that they also have some canisters containing COVID-19 active material they hope to spread to the Zimbabweans. We are reliably informed that they have got a mechanism of spreading coronavirus which has been brought in by those funding the protests.”

He added: “So, this is what they are trying to do, to spread coronavirus and then blame the government for not being proactive.”

Shocker as ED retires long-serving ZPCS Comm-General Paradzai Zimondi

Shocker as ED retires long-serving ZPCS Comm-General Paradzai Zimondi. The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) Commissioner-General Paradzai Zimondi is reportedly being retired.

Zimondi is being retired on the recommendation of the Public Service Commission (PSC), ZimLive reports. The publication quoted its source as having said:

The PSC wrote to President Emmerson Mnangagwa in June stating that Zimondi had reached the retirement age [65 years], and recommended his retirement. Mnangagwa approved and the PSC formalised the process. The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Virginia Mabhiza, could not confirm the development saying there are protocols to be followed.

The 73-year-old former Major General in the Air Force of Zimbabwe – as one of the country’s ‘service chiefs’ – was a cog in a repressive security apparatus that is blamed for many atrocities since his appointment in 1997.

In 2008 Zimondi reportedly ordered all prison officers to vote for the then President Robert Mugabe in elections against ‘sell-out’ Morgan Tsvangirai, who was the leader of the opposition MDC.

Nelson Chamisa ally Amos Chibaya dares Mwonzora to takeover MDC-A offices

Nelson Chamisa ally Amos Chibaya dares Mwonzora to takeover MDC-A offices. Mr Mwonzora’s comments follow clashes between MDC-T and MDC-A youths over the control of the party offices in Kwekwe at the weekend.

There have been disputes over the property following a Supreme Court ruling which ordered the MDC-T, the main component in the formation of the MDC-A, to revert to its 2014 structures, which thus made Dr Thokozani Khupe the interim leader and Mr Mwonzora the secretary-general.

MDC-T party secretary-general, Mr Douglas Mwonzora yesterday said the party was pursuing legal action against the MDC-Alliance for continuing to occupy the party offices and properties national wide.

The basis of the dispute is the status of the MDC-A, which now asserts it is a political party incorporating the formations that joined together to fight the 2018 elections. The MDC-T asserts, backed by a High Court ruling, that the MDC-A was a simple electoral pact and that the constituent parties remain. With the earlier Supreme Court ruling this makes the MDC-T under Dr Khupe the legal holder of the party property.

In an interview, Mr Mwonzora said blamed MDC-A youths for triggering the clashes. “As you know we are preparing for our congress in line with the Supreme Court ruling and at the weekend, we were in the Midlands province,” he said.

“We intended to hold a meeting at our party offices in Kwekwe when some hooligans came and disrupted it. We tried to reason with them but they were violent and we could not conduct our meeting.”

Mr Mwonzora said the MDC-T was the legitimate owner of the party’s offices and properties across the country and was now going to take legal action to claim the offices.

“When we came to the Midlands, we did not intend to take over the offices but we just wanted to use them for our meeting but there are some who are still in denial as to who owns that office. We are now working on taking away our properties from these hooligans,” he said.

“We are definitely going take over and occupy our offices and properties it’s only a matter of time.” Contacted for a comment, MDC Alliance national organising secretary, Mr Amos Chibaya said they will resist the takeover of the offices. He said what happened at Harvest house will not be repeated elsewhere but would not elaborate on what action the MDC-A would take.

“I want to assure you that we are much prepared and what happened at Harvest house when (Mr) Mwonzora and company moved into our offices will not happen again. We will be there waiting for them let them dare take any of the party’s offices and you will see what will happen,” said Mr Chibaya.

Drunk woman stabs boyfriend to death

Drunk woman stabs boyfriend to death. Police have confirmed the death of Vain Mohammed of Mkhosana suburb and the arrest of Sithandazile Sibanda (31). A popular imbiber at most nightspots in the resort town, Sibanda allegedly arrived home drunk and picked a fight with the now-deceased Mohammed, who worked as a vendor.

A 24-year-old man died instantly in Victoria Falls after his drunk live-in girlfriend allegedly stabbed him once on the back with a knife Sunday night accusing him of failing to open the door for her.

According to witnesses, Mohamed was already asleep. Sibanda is reported to have left home Sunday morning for a drink beer with friends in the same Mkhosana suburb. This is despite drinking beer in public and opening of bars remaining prohibited under Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

Some neighbours accused Sibanda of jealousy, saying although she was in the habit of frequenting nightspots leaving Mohammed at home, she frequently picked fights with her lover’s female friends. Matabeleland North police spokesperson Chief Inspector Siphiwe Makonese said Sibanda was assisting the police with investigations.

“We received a report of a woman who allegedly stabbed her husband at a house where they were renting on Sunday night. The woman is in police custody and will appear in court for murder,” said Chief Insp Makonese.

Sibanda and the now-deceased moved into the house last year. Their landlady Makhosi Mkandla and her husband Steven Sibanda said they were shocked by the incident.  Mkandla said a drunk Sibanda arrived home and picked a fight with Mohamed who was already in bed.

“He spent the whole day at home while Sibanda had gone to drink with friends. She returned at night and that’s when a quarrel started with Sibanda accusing Mohamed of not opening the door for her,” said Mkandla.

She said Sibanda picked an iron bar which she used to hit Mohamed who was lying in bed. “The two wrestled for the iron bar and he managed to disarm her. She then picked a knife and stabbed him on the back causing his instant death as he bled from the mouth and nose,” said Mkandla.

Mohamed was pronounced dead by an ambulance crew that arrived after 10 pm while Sibanda was arrested. Mohamed’s body was taken to Victoria Falls Hospital mortuary before it was ferried to Bulawayo for postmortem.

President Mnangagwa bans 31 July protest

President Mnangagwa bans 31 July protest. It quotes information ministry spokesperson Nick Mangwana as saying that the march scheduled for 31 July is a “subversion of the constitutional order”.

The authorities in Zimbabwe have banned a planned anti-corruption march organised by the main opposition party MDC-Alliance, the state-owned Herald newspaper reports.

“What is being planned for July 31 is unconstitutional and it will not be allowed to happen. The state has apparatus that are in place to ensure that the constitutional order [is maintained],” Mr Mangwana told the newspaper.

“There is nothing anti-corruption about the protests, as you can see, everyone is mobilising with the view of overthrowing the government,” he is quoted as saying.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa last week sacked Health Minister Obadiah Moyo for “inappropriate conduct” over a $60m (£48m) medicines supply scandal. The minister has not responded to the allegations.

Mr Moyo was last month arrested on charges of corruption and abuse of office in connection with a coronavirus equipment procurement scandal but was later released on bail.

Govt: Schools wont be opening anymore

Govt: Schools wont be opening anymore. Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, after a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, said the government is disturbed by the spike in COVID-19 locally transmitted cases and the number of deaths recorded.

Government has deferred the re-opening of schools initially scheduled for 28 July as Zimbabwe records a surge in Covid-19 cases with recorded ones reaching more than 1000.

“To curb the increase in transmissions as well as deaths from COVID-19, the following measures were adopted That the current lockdown restrictions will be tightened, while localised lockdowns are introduced in hotspot areas and further opening up of the economy is halted.

“Testing in communities with high cases of local transmission such as Bulawayo will be increased. The re-opening of schools shall be deferred pending a review of the situation, while the writing of public examinations continues,” said Mutsvangwa.

“Private schools that have already opened without permission will be penalized. The government shall have the sole responsibility for inter-city travel for those that really require to travel especially to seek medical attention.”

Mutsvangwa said two buses will be availed to transport those that test positive from Beitbridge to their respective provincial isolation centres.

ZANU PF speaks on Old Mutual Zimbabwe

$
0

ZANU PF speaks on Old Mutual Zimbabwe. To protect the interests of the 30168 shareholders of Old Mutual Limited, ZANU PF is recommending to its government that it sets up a stock exchange which will trade only in US$.

ZANU PF is totally opposed to the fungibility of the Old Mutual Shares and to this end it reaffirms its policy position that the ZSE should compulsorily de-list the Old Mutual Limited shares from trading on the ZSE.

Old Mutual Limited can then be allowed to migrate, find home and trade on such a foreign currency-denominated counter in Zimbabwe. Trading on other counters has been normal and the Party is recommending that trading be resumed.

Setting up a foreign exchange denominated stock exchange is an appropriate institution for raising and attracting foreign direct investment into Zimbabwe. Companies that want to invest in Zimbabwe and requiring foreign currency would then list on such a stock exchange to attract foreign direct investment in foreign currency for investment.

The details of implementing this recommendation are left to government including the timeframe within which this recommendation can be implemented. It is the desire of ZANU PF that implementation is in the shortest possible time to avoid undue disruption to inflows of investment capital.

ZANU PF says an emphatic NO, to self-enrichment through speculative trading and externalisation. ZANU PF also wishes to commend the government for the decision that it has taken to allow mobile money operators to be overseen by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe through the Zim-Switch platform.

As a matter of fact, ZANU PF considers this decision to be a masterstroke which will give an invisible hand to the government to manage and direct the country towards a common good

The channelling of all mobile money transactions through this platform is the right thing to do and will, in the end, restore stability and sanity to the banking sector. Mobile money transaction platforms had become a law unto themselves making rules for banks and others to comply with.

ZANU PF thus supports the measures that the government has taken in this regard as it considers them necessary medicine to cure our economy which is under siege. The measures will no doubt in due course become a sound basis for a strategic sustainable nation building, a platform for robust employment creation for our people, stabilisation of the exchange rate and resuscitation of our key productive sectors

It is high time that Zimbabwe corporates and foreign corporates working in Zimbabwe put Zimbabwean Interests First and deploy their resources to the productive sectors that generate employment, goods and services.

Strive Masiyiwa: Masks should become an essential part of our clothing like underwear

Strive Masiyiwa: Masks should become an essential part of our clothing like underwear. Founder of Higherlife Foundation Strive Masiyiwa said that people should make it a habit to wear masks for the next twelve months in order to combat the spread of the deadly novel coronavirus. He wrote on his Facebook page:

By now it should be clear to everybody that the most powerful tool to fight coronavirus infection is the humble Mask.

We have to wear Masks for the next 12 months, every day, in much the same way, we wear clothes. They must become an essential part of our clothing, like underwear! If you wear the same Mask every day, it will become smelly, and lose its real effectiveness. Every person should have at least three masks and change one every day.

An old bedsheet can make great masks. For children, old school uniforms are good mask materials. Putting on a Mask is bigger than washing hands, but together, masks and regular washing of hands will stop the spread of Covid-19.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has indicated that wearing masks in public places could provide “a barrier for potentially infectious droplets”. While the wearing of face masks is not intended to protect the wearer, it helps to prevent the spread of the virus from the wearer to others.

Olivier Giroud scored again as Chelsea beat Norwich 1 – 0

$

Striker Olivier Giroud guided a header past Tim Krul on the stroke of half-time after Christian Pulisic created space for the cross on the right. Chelsea put themselves in the driving seat to secure a Champions League spot with an unspectacular victory over relegated Norwich at Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea pair almost combined again in the second half but Pulisic could not guide Giroud’s chipped ball past Krul. Victory strengthens Chelsea’s hold on the third place, where they sit four points above Leicester and Manchester United, who both play on Thursday.

Norwich, who were relegated following a 4-0 thrashing by West Ham on Saturday, failed to record a shot on target during the match. The first half was lacking in action as Norwich sat back and squeezed out any space available for Chelsea. The hosts just could not seem to get things clicking.

Following Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Sheffield United, Chelsea would have wanted to start brightly and they showed signs with Ruben Loftus-Cheek heading wide and Marcos Alonso firing a dangerous cross in from the left within five minutes.

But as the half wore on, Chelsea struggled to create any clear-cut opportunities – Giroud reacted to a third scuffed shot with a roar of frustration in the box after 40 minutes.

Pulisic had provided the best chance of the half – controlling Antonio Rudiger’s cross, turning sharply and firing it towards the roof of the net, forcing a save from Krul – before he eventually set-up Giroud’s header with a swinging cross from the right.

The goal should have been a catalyst for Chelsea to release the shackles but the fluidity never really materialised, despite them still being able to create further chances. Giroud and Pulisic were busy but not clinical, though it didn’t prove costly as Norwich never presented any real threat.

In the end, it was a comfortable victory for Chelsea despite a lack of ruthlessness. Manager Frank Lampard will hope that clinical edge returns for a significant run of matches – they face Manchester United in an FA Cup semi-final on Sunday, visit champions Liverpool in the league next Wednesday and then finish the top-flight campaign at home to sixth-placed Wolves four days later.

Smugglers and illegal cross-borders open taxi rank near SA border

Smugglers and illegal cross-borders open taxi rank near the SA border. The two countries closed the border to non-essential human traffic while allowing trucks to move cargo. Smuggling is rising along the Limpopo River despite increased patrols by security forces on both sides to curb illegal crossings.

Since security was tightened at the border post, smugglers have created new lucrative illegal crossing points and have even opened a taxi rank a kilometre from the border.

It is estimated that there are more than 200 illegal crossing points within 60km each side of the border post, many used to smuggle groceries into Zimbabwe and cigarettes into South Africa.

This traffic is legal, but duties are charged and the smugglers do not pay taxes. Now smugglers have become more daring and operate 500 metres east of the main border post. Last week, the police arrested 35 people with an assortment of goods smuggled from South Africa.

They were carrying groceries, fuel and drums. In essence, even the arrests are not deterrent enough since the smugglers have opened a new illegal taxi rank at Gateway truck stop in South Africa, just 1km from South Africa’s border.

“This is where everyone coming from all parts of South Africa drop off to avoid mandatory quarantining. They then hire people to carry goods across borders for between R50 and R100. They enter Zimbabwe near the spillway.

“However, our greatest fear is that they are smuggling Covid-19 across the border, besides moving contraband,” said a South African official. The official said several people were being arrested in that country, but the smugglers were not relenting.

The Herald is reliably informed that after getting into Zimbabwe the smugglers and migrants are hiring taxis for anything between R50 and R60 to spots on roads leading to Bulawayo or Harare where they can pick-up lifts to these two cities.

Report: Zimbabwe loses US$1bn to smuggling annually

Report: Zimbabwe loses US$1bn to smuggling annually. Business leaders said the organised evasion of duties not only harmed Government development efforts but compromised the viability of businesses that abide by all customs requirements.

Smuggling, ineffective border controls and customs loopholes at Beitbridge Border Post might be costing Zimbabwe nearly a US$1 billion a year in unpaid customs duty, industry leaders and authorities confirmed.

They want to see upgrades of border posts and modern systems, while tax officials, who declined to guess the annual losses to smuggling, want more resources to hunt down smugglers.

This comes as tax authorities recently said a special audit last year into vehicle imports had unearthed 485 sets of irregular import documents with a potential revenue inflow prejudice to Treasury of US$70 million.

Working with the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, tax officials said in a 2019 audit report that a total of 601 cases were investigated that year with US$163,78 million being identified for recovery. This hunting down the unpaid money which is ongoing.

Last year, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority said it was owed $5 billion in unpaid taxes, including from undeclared or under-declared high-value luxury imported vehicle duties, indicating the extent of the problem of non-compliance with customs requirements in the country.

The Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce, one of Zimbabwe’s largest business lobby groups, said research and market surveillance had shown that the country might be losing an estimated US$80 million monthly due to porous borders, lax customs and security systems, translating to almost US$1 billion annually.

In a position paper submitted to Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube ahead of his 2020 budget review this week, ZNCC said the Government should urgently deal with the deficiencies in customs procedures, border control and security systems in order to curb the leakage of hundreds of millions of dollars in potential duty revenue.

Customs duty is one of Zimbabwe’s largest sources of tax revenue, along with individual tax, accounting for billions of dollars in annual State revenue that finances key Government programmes and pays civil servants.

Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA)Commissioner-General Faith Mazani confirmed in an interview that the country might be losing significant potential customs duty revenue due to widespread smuggling of goods, despite ongoing concerted efforts and a broad cocktail of measures to stop import duty evasion.

Ms Mazani, however, said while it was difficult to give credible estimates of potential customs duty being lost to illegal imports and actions designed to evade or suppress duty, smuggling remained rampant despite the coterie of measures Zimra has instituted to curtail the vice.

In light of this, the ZNCC has commended Government for an opening to new players, the assessment of the quality of imports under the consignment conformity-based assessment programme saying the move will enhance efficiency at the country’s ports of entry.

But the lobby group said there was an urgent need for allocation of funds towards improving the efficiency of border systems by modernising the infrastructure at ports of entry in line with changing global trends and business needs.

“There is need to digitise all Zimra operations at the borders. Zimra should move to paperless operations. There is (also) need to increase border patrols along the Limpopo River so as to curb smuggling. Approximately US$80 million is lost annually through smuggling,” ZNCC said.

ZNCC chief executive Takunda Mugaga said in an interview that internal research, under what they call in-house surveys and market intelligence related to activities at the country’s ports of entry, revealed that rampant smuggling at border posts was costing the country dearly.

Although the problem of smuggling is common at many of Zimbabwe’s ports of entry, the vice was more widespread and entrenched at Beitbridge, the country and region’s busiest border post that connects the continent’s north and south trade corridors with Africa’s largest economy, South Africa.

“Effective border controls, tight customs procedures and border security systems are critical because we do not want to suffocate our industry. The problem that is there is that industry is suffering from the dumping of products, which Government might be oblivious of.

“There are sub-standard products being sold below the cost of production in Zimbabwe. Government is also being short-changed in terms of revenue. If all that potential customs revenue was being collected, we would not be facing the sort of current account issues we are facing,” Mr Mugaga said yesterday.

He said that for business, the most worrying issue was that sub-standard products and goods that are being smuggled, as a result not paying customs duty, were posing unfair competition.

“At one point former industry minister (Mike) Bimha put an SI to ban second-hand tyre imports, but we continued to see the products in the market and one would wonder where the products were coming from.

“So, porous borders are an issue and this is why there is need to see if consignment-based certification programme is helping the country resolve the issues of imported and sub-standard goods,” he said.

The ZNCC CEO said Zimra must be capacitated to monitor the country’s ports of entry and acquire technology and infrastructure such as cameras that enable the State revenue authority to discharge its duties.

Mr Mugaga said Zimra also needed to work closely with other customs agents like immigration officials to deal effectively with the challenge of smuggling.

“I cannot put a figure in terms of smuggled goods because we can only know the potential revenue prejudice on confiscated goods, but with regard to porous borders we have no way of knowing the estimated value of what comes in or goes out,” Ms Mazani said.

She also noted that issues of border surveillance involved a number of agents, including the security forces, who must work closely with customs officials and in a very coordinated manner.

Mrs Mazani said efforts were underway to rope in the security agents such as military to effectively monitor and carry out surveillance in remote and dangerous places such as parts of the eastern Highlands, which may have landmines in some areas, but resources such as appropriate vehicles were a stumbling block.

She also said resources were standing in the way of planned programmes like border surveillance of water boundaries such as Kariba and Zambezi River. To counter smuggling, Zimra recently said focus was now on implementing a new US$10 million tax and revenue management system (TaRMS), which is funded by the African Development Bank.

Update: Prisons boss Paradzai Zimondi retires. In an interview, last night, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi confirmed the development and said Maj-Gen Zimondi (Rtd) would go on three months leave from July 31 pending retirement on November 1.

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Commissioner-General Retired Major-General Paradzai Zimondi will retire from the top prisons post in November this year after 22 years of service which began in 1998 when he was 51.

“We are indebted to the services he offered during his tenure in office,” he said.  “Commissioner-General Zimondi has worked tirelessly and has exhibited a high level of loyalty to his country before, during and after independence. “His contribution to the nation is unmatched.”

Maj-Gen Zimondi (Rtd) joined the Zimbabwe Prison Services as a Deputy Commissioner in 1997 and in July the same year undertook a study of British, Danish and Swedish prison systems. In 1998, he was appointed Acting Commissioner following the retirement of Mr Langton Chigwida the previous year.

Mr Chigwida had been at the helm of the prison service since 1984. Maj-Gen Zimondi (Rtd) was appointed as a substantive commissioner on April 1, 1998. He joined the liberation struggle and received military training at Mgagao Training Camp, Tanzania in 1974.

He was posted to Chimoio, Mozambique, where he assumed the position of a trainer. After independence in 1980, Maj-Gen Zimondi (Rtd) was attested into the Zimbabwe National Army as a colonel and rose through the ranks to become Major-General.

He held various commanding posts in the army, including being Commander of Presidential Guard. He helped to set up a formidable prisons service in the country through improving the delivery of health systems in prisons across the country.

FC Platinum coach barred from entering SA

FC Platinum coach barred from entering SA. Sources said he didn’t have the required Covid-19 testing certificate and a clearance letter from the South African Embassy in Harare. FC Platinum coach, Pieter de Jongh, was on Saturday barred from entering South Africa, en-route to Eswatini.

The Dutchman, however, claims he had the Covid-19 certificate after being tested at a Gweru private clinic on Thursday, which cleared him, and the only reason he couldn’t proceed to Eswatini was because of a communication breakdown.

He also refuted claims he intended to meet potential new employers in Eswatini, but instead, said he wanted to utilise his visit to arrange a training camp for his club as part of preparations for the next edition of the CAF Champions League.

Sources had claimed the coach was already in Eswatini, to meet up with potential employers, believed to be Football Association of Zambia, after the coach last week posted a message on his Twitter handle in which he tagged the Chipolopolo page.

“The gentleman was turned back on the South African side of the border because his papers didn’t add up,’’ sources said.

“He did not have the Covid-19 certificate to show that he wasn’t a virus carrier and, also, the clearance from the South African Embassy for him to enter the country.’’ Responding to the allegations he was denied entry, the coach said it was because of a communication breakdown, which was being sorted out.

“I had all the papers, but one. I was tested for coronavirus in Gweru on Thursday and I don’t have the virus,’’ he said. “I also have a letter from my very professional employers, FC Platinum, who knew where I was going. “And, another letter from the Eswatini football authorities who, by the way, remain very good friends of mine, having been their employee.

“There was just a small communication breakdown that required me to have a letter from the South African Embassy so that I can pass through their country on my way to Eswatini, a visit which, by the way, was more private. “I also wanted to organise a camp for my club, as part of our preparations for the CAF Champions League.

“It’s not true that I was going to meet my so-called potential employers, I am very happy here at FC Platinum, it’s a professional institute and my contract here is a long one. “I have all the intentions of fulfilling it. Once the proper papers are sorted out, I will definitely make the trip to Eswatini.’’

The coach revealed he is having a hard time, providing reassurance to his players, amid the uncertainty surrounding the start of the 2020 Premiership season. “I am impressed by the level of commitment being displayed by my players,’’ he said.

“You know, I have had to work extra hard to make sure they keep calm. They are keen to see the season start. “The game is on lockdown and I make sure I talk to my players every time. You can easily pick that the players are now tired of sitting at home. “I have intensified their individual work-out programmes, but you know, they are used to training in groups.

“Life comes before everything else so, we have chosen life, and the Government has chosen to preserve life than risk it for the sake of football. “The main problem is mental. I have been telling my players to keep focus and keep on hoping that everything shall be well.’’

Prior to the lockdown, FC Platinum had not rested for the past three years, with the club fighting on two fronts in the local league, and in the CAF Champions League. “I inherited a team which is used to non-stop football action,’’ he said.

“This is a team which, until March this year, had never really rested. “What it means is that the team had somehow become used to playing football every week. “But after three months of non-action, the players are beginning to show some signs of distress.

“I, therefore, had to raise my own game as their coach, talking to them and, at least, making sure they keep focused at a time like this.” The Dutchman is also longing for the return of football action.

“I had built a strong team and I knew we were going to have a flying start,’’ he said. “But, things had to turn out this way. “It is my hope that the league starts in September while the CAF Champions League comes a month later. “I am here to coach football and I hope football returns soon.”
