Bonang Matheba

“queen, can I be your ben 10?”

Bonang decided to make the man happy,

“Sure…why not?! Lemme change your life…”

Some of the fans were quick to notice how the queen wants to take over Zodwa WaBantu’s spot.

The Ben did waste no time and updated his status; “DATING QUEEN BONANG”

ZANU PF created Khupe’s MDC-T to destroy genuine opposition in Zim

ZANU PF created Khupe’s MDC-T to destroy genuine opposition in Zim. Kent University law lecturer Alex Magaisa believes that the recall of 21 MDC Alliance councillors in Harare by the MDC-T is revenge for the loss of the mayoral election and is also designed make the council dysfunctional and allow ZANU PF to appoint a commission to run the city.

The MDC-T under Thokozani Khupe’s interim leadership was designed by the ruling ZANU PF party to destroy opposition politics in Zimbabwe and consequently create a one-party system in one form or another, a legal and political commentator has said. Said Magaisa:

For those who doubted the prognosis that the judicially-reconstructed MDC-T led by Khupe is a ZANU PF project purposefully designed to decimate the opposition in Zimbabwe. Having lost the mayoral race, they decided to make council dysfunctional so ZANU can appoint a Commission.

Students of politics and governance have a case study of how a ruling party co-opted a few enablers and hiding under a facade of legality, systematically grabbed political space occupied by the main opposition and in the process tried to form a de facto one-party system.

ZANU PF wants to control Harare and other urban areas. They created a group of marionettes, gave them power and set about the destruction job. Never mind the Constitution which requires local authorities to be governed by elected councils, we might as well wave goodbye to it.

What can be done? Their eyes are also on these streets. So please do not expect specifics on this platform. Whatever is said here is because it is meant to be known by them and all. And not everything is meant to be known. But do fire away.

The MDC-T has recalled several councillors in Harare, Gwanda, Bulawayo and Beitbridge. Among the councillors sent to the guillotine include the mayor of Harare and his deputy, Herbert Gomba and Enoch Mupamawonde respectively, Gwanda mayor Jastone Mazhale, and Beitbridge mayor Morgan Ncube.

Drama as suspended ZESA boss, Sydney Gata reinstated. On August 6 2020, His Excellency President, Cde E. D. Mnangagwa, suspended the Executive Chairman of ZESA Holdings and his entire Board of Directors on allegations of gross misconduct that had been levelled against them.

UPDATE ON ZACC INVESTIGATIONS ON THE EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN OF ZESA HOLDINGS AND THE ENTIRE ZESA BOARD OF DIRECTORS ON ALLEGATIONS OF GROSS MISCONDUCT

The suspension was in terms of section 16 (1) (a) as read with section 16 (1) (d) of the Public Entities Corporate Governance Act. His Excellency the President then referred the matter to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) for investigations focusing on the following issues:

a) The allegations levelled against the Executive Chairman by the former Honourable Minister of Energy and Power Development, Advocate Fortune Chasi.b) Any other underlying corrupt practices by ZESA Board Members and within the electricity sector as a whole.

His Excellency the President further requested ZACC to complete its investigations and submit a Report of its findings within a period of four (4) weeks from the date of referral. ZACC completed its Interim Report on 4 September 2020 which has since been received by His Excellency the President. However, investigations remain in progress until their logical conclusion.

The Interim Report indicates that corruption investigations also covered the following issues:

1. The Intratek Gwanda Solar Project;

2. The Mutare Peaking Plant Project;

3. Conduct of the former Minister of Energy and Power Development in his dealings with ZESA;

4. Conduct of the officials in the Ministry of Energy and Power Development in their dealings with ZESA.

The Interim Report further examined corporate governance at ZESA and proffered recommendations on the subject.

At the commencement of the ZACC investigations, the Executive Chairman, Dr S Gata was accused of six (6) acts of misconduct namely:

i) Self-allocation of six vehicles for personal and
family use;

ii) Authorising an expenditure of zw$10 million for Christmas parties in Hwange and Kariba in 2019 without Board approval;

iii) Unilaterally installing solar equipment at his residence in Borrowdale using ZESA funds;

iv) Setting up a Trust called ZESIT to undertake several ZESA projects;

v) Interfering with the disciplinary process, in particular, that of Mrs Norah Tsomondo, the Company Secretary of the Zimbabwe Power Company (Pvt) Limited; and

vi) Allegedly authorizing the payment of ghost employees and his personal workers on the ZESA payroll under the misrepresentation that they were employed by ZESA.

The Interim Report cleared Dr Gata of the first four (4) allegations. With regards to the last two (2) allegations, ZACC is yet to conclude its investigations.

With regards to allegations against the Board members, the Interim Report indicates that the investigations are still in progress.

His Excellency the President, being cognisant of the fact that ZESA is at the epicentre of the economic activity of the Nation and that it would not be desirable for this entity to operate below optimal efficiency due to lack of leadership at its helm, has directed as follows:

1. That the Executive Chairman of ZESA, Dr S Gata, while investigations are on-going, be allowed to carry on his responsibility as Executive Chairman;

2. That the Board members also continue in their positions until the finalization of the investigations; and

3. That the Minister of Energy and Power Development,

Hon Z Soda should examine corporate governance issues that have been raised in the ZACC Interim Report and present his recommendations on the same to His Excellency the President by 30 November 2020.

ZEC lifts suspension of elections

ZEC lifts suspension of elections. The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has lifted the suspension of electoral activities, with immediate effect, paving way for the holding of the many Parliamentary and local council by-elections with the commission applying procedures to reduce the risk of Covid-19 infection.

In June, ZEC suspended electoral activities as part of measures to curb the spread of Covid-19. The commission recently announced that there were 15 vacancies in Parliament that needed to be filled through by-elections following National Assembly recalls by the MDC-T.

While the proportional representation seats in the Assembly and the Senate vacancies are filled by direct nomination in a different process, the constituency seats and the vacancies in local authorities, with Harare City Council having the most, have to be filled by voters in by-elections

Some Parliamentarians and local councillors have also died and should be replaced through holding of by-elections. In a statement ZEC chairperson, Justice Priscilla Chigumba said the lifting of the suspension on electoral activities is in line with the Covid-19 policy that has been adopted by the commission.

“The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission would like to inform the public that it has lifted with immediate effect the suspension of electoral activities following measures taken by Government to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. Electoral timelines for all the pending by-elections will be published in the press through notices in due course,” said Justice Chigumba.

“The lifting follows a cautionary observation of the pandemic’s trends and subsequent adoption of health safety measures including the drafting and operationalisation of a Covid-19 policy on electoral activities by the commission whose contents were open to stakeholders’ contribution.

The Covid-19 policy on electoral activities which outlines how by-elections and other electoral activities will be conducted without exposing those involved to health risks is now on the ZEC website www.zec.org.zw for the public.”

In the health policy, members of the public will be allowed to bring their pens when coming to cast their votes. ZEC will disinfect electoral materials such as pens for those who will not carry theirs. Mandatory temperature tests, wearing of masks and sanitisation of hands will be required for all people entering ZEC premises.

Zanu PF acting national spokesperson, Cde Patrick Chinamasa said: “We will contest all vacancies in the by-elections with the aim of winning them to Zanu PF whether they through recall because of problems in the MDC-T or through deaths.”

MDC-T Secretary-general Mr Douglas Mwonzora said: “Of course, we are going to be contesting elections.” MDC-Alliance deputy national spokesperson, Mr Felix Mafa Sibanda, said the by-elections will not change anything if there are no reforms.

President Ramaphosa’s role in the trip to Zim should be probed. The party has asked the Public Protector to investigate. A SANDF plane transported senior ANC officials to Harare to meet with Zanu-PF.

The African Transformation Movement wants President Cyril Ramaphosa’s role in the controversial trip to Zimbabwe probed.

Ramaphosa gave Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula 48-hours to explain how this happened, and that report has been handed to the president.

The ATM party says Ramaphosa continues to increase the public’s mistrust in government. It says the abuse of state resources confirms its view that he’s unfit for office.

Mnangagwa salutes parents on his birthday

Mnangagwa salutes parents on his birthday. In an interview with The Herald yesterday at State House, the President paid homage to his late parents, Mr Mafidhi and Mrs Mhurai Mnangagwa who were both politically active, for inspiring him to become the servant leader he is today.

President Mnangagwa, who spent his 78th birthday at work yesterday, says he is a satisfied man after achieving the aspirations of his parents who wanted him to be a lawyer and making the resolve to fight head-on white settlers who had expropriated land and wealth from indigenous black Zimbabweans.

The President, who was born on September 15, 1942, in Zvishavane District, has transformed Zimbabwe in less than two years through pragmatic policies that experts say will inevitably lead the country to become an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.

He said his parents bestowed on him virtues of education and family. “I feel very happy that the Lord above, God has mercy. He has allowed me to grow by another year, from 77 to 78.

“My parents taught me differently. My father always wanted me to go to school, become a lawyer and reply whites in English. That is what he wanted because he felt that when they speak in English and had to be translated, he did not feel confident that the translation was correct.

“So he felt that I must go to school, become a lawyer and reply to whites in English. But for my mother, she was different. She wanted me to be a family person, be a farmer. She felt that there is nothing that keeps you solid as a family if you have a farm, cattle, goats and chickens. I have achieved both, for my father and mother,” the President who is both an accomplished farmer and lawyer said.

Walking the talk while working around the clock, the President yesterday chaired a Cabinet meeting that touched on economic development as well as progress, which has been made under the dark clouds of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was business as usual as the President conducted his normal duties while at the same time being conscious of the Almighty’s grace for the birthday milestone.

In a statement, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry Mr Nick Mangwana, management and staff, said President Mnangagwa has inspired “all at the ministry to put Zimbabwe on the map and be the bridge between the Government and the general citizenry”.

“President Mnangagwa’s life has been one of unwavering, selfless dedication and humility, having taken up arms at a tender age to fight the unjust colonial system. By this act of self-sacrifice, he was not spared the pain and suffering that were the hallmark of every facet of the armed struggle that shaped our road to Independence and sovereignty. He went through capture, incarceration, life in prison, death row, and had a lucky escape from the hanging noose of the colonial settler regime” Minister Mutsvangwa said.

She said President Mnangagwa, after Independence, “continued on as a dedicated son of the soil and has spent each year working for a better Zimbabwe”. The Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Misheck Sibanda, his deputies, senior management and staff in the Office of the President and Cabinet said they are honoured to work under the servant leadership of President Mnangagwa.

“We note with satisfaction that through His Excellency’s wise stewardship of the Second Republic, our beloved nation continues to scale new heights in entrenching unity, peace and stability, thus paving the way for accelerated socio-economic development under the Transitional Stabilisation Programme.

“Equally inspiring is the wisdom which the President has demonstrated in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak, steering the nation away from a catastrophe through robust and judicious deployment of human, material, and financial resources. The nation can now look ahead with renewed hope to the finalisation and launch of the National Development Strategy, the implementation of which the Office of the President and Cabinet will spearhead towards the attainment of Vision 2030 for a prosperous and knowledge-driven Upper Middle Income society.

“Once again, the entire staff of the Office of the President and Cabinet would like to assure His Excellency the President of its total commitment to effective service delivery as we guide and lead the policy formulation and implementation process of the Whole of Government Concept for the ultimate good and prosperity of all Zimbabweans,” reads the statement.

Zanu PF Secretary for Administration Dr Obert Mpofu said President Mnangagwa has imprinted indelible marks of delivering justice, unity and equality for all Zimbabweans. “Zanu PF wishes to convey its profound delight in His Excellency and the First Secretary of the revolutionary party for yet another anniversary of his long-lived commitment to the freedom of Zimbabwe.”

Dr Mpofu further said since his formative induction to leadership through the armed struggle at a tender age, the President forwent the treasonous risk of confronting the colonial regime in the pursuit of our independence.

The footsteps of his leadership path, Dr Mpofu said, underscores the creed of the country’s decolonisation triumph. He described President Mnangagwa as the founding father of the New Dispensation

“Your Excellency, through this life anniversary, as ZANU PF we join the rest of the nation in commemorating the divine validation of your vocation. We also cherish your consistent ideological leaning to the decolonisation agenda and your meticulous reinvention of our liberation legacy as the Founding Father of the New Dispensation. Under the Second-Republic, we enjoy the tide of peace and reconciliation in our nation. However, through your leadership, we are confident in the wide prospects of national unity and cross-cutting solidarities of our people which transcend our artificial binary divides of race, ethnicity, gender and partisan affiliations,” he said.

“Without doubt, your inaugural electoral endorsement as the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe in 2018 has reasserted the magnitude of your popularity. You remain a symbol of broad-based aspirations of the divergent sections of our citizenry. To this end, we are confident that under your leadership Zimbabwe will be ushered to a future of endless prosperity,” Cde Mpofu said.

The revolutionary party’s National Secretary for Women Affairs Cde Mabel Chinomona said President’s Mnangagwa’s life serves as an insignia of not only political democratisation but also epitomises the mainstreaming of the gender equality which exists in the country

“The Zanu PF Women’s League joins the nation in celebrating this important and special day, September 15, 2020, as we celebrate the birth of a nationalist figurehead of our nation and a decorated luminary of our struggle for Zimbabwe and First Secretary of Zanu PF, Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.

“As the Women’s League, we take pride in your footprints of unwavering loyalty to the decolonisation agenda as well as the post-colonial reconfiguration of our permanent national interests and the ideological integrity of our revolutionary Party, Zanu PF.

“Your Excellency, your life serves as an insignia of not only political democratisation, but it also epitomises the mainstreaming of the gender equality that we are enjoying as a modern, independent and democratic African state. Your ascendancy to the Presidency has widened the vistas of de-patriachising our politics, the economy and our general social livelihoods,” said Cde Chinomona.

In an ardent pursuit of the political-cultural reform agenda of the Second Republic, she said, the country under the leadership of President Mnangagwa, has sustained the constitutional premise for gender equality in a manner never witnessed before since independence in 1980.

“You have created equal opportunities for us in governance and leadership in general and more importantly in financial inclusion through the Zimbabwe Women’s Microfinance Bank. With these and many more milestones, we are certain that under your wise and visionary leadership Zimbabwe will continue on the verge of perennial prosperity in a sustainable manner.

“The Women’s League reaffirms its total support and loyalty to the Leadership of President Dr Mnangagwa and pledges its commitment to play its part in the pursuit of Vision 2030,’’ she said.

Acting Secretary for Youth Affairs Cde Tendai Chirau issued a statement saying “on this auspicious day, we celebrate the birthday of a man who has travelled the road, a far-sighted leader deeply committed to achieving social justice through pragmatic practical action, and an epitome of resilience”.

“From his life, which is servant leadership personified, we as young people continue to draw inspiration and vital lessons. His example in all facets of statecraft promotes the ideals of hard work, discipline, honesty and forthrightness, which have coalesced into a defining ethos now synonymous with the new dispensation.

“On behalf of the rank and file of true Zanu PF Youth League, and indeed, on behalf of all like-minded revolutionary young people, we extend our warmest heartfelt birthday wishes to a man who continues to inspire us to stand firm with courage, tenacity and determination as we continue in the fight against international isolation, self-hate and other adversities such as illegal sanctions, political duplicity, corruption and lately, the Covid-19 curse,” reads the statement.

Since making the resolve to confront the racist colonial regime by being among the first ZANLA cadres to be sent for military training to China, President Mnangagwa has never wavered in his dedication to the freedom of his country. He has committed his entire life to the struggle for Zimbabwe’s quest for total independence through economic development and empowerment as exemplified by Vision 2030, which seeks to achieve an Upper Middle-Income country.

Warrant of arrest issued for sick MDC A MP Joana Mamombe

Warrant of arrest issued for sick MDC A MP Joana Mamombe. Joana Mamombe failed to attend court for trial on charges of faking her abduction in May, with her lawyer saying she was hospitalised at a Harare health centre receiving treatment for anxiety disorder.

MDC-Alliance member Joana Mamombe was yesterday issued with a warrant of arrest, but last night police were maintaining a presence at the medical centre where she is being treated. The lawyer failed to produce the required doctor’s certificate and admission records, hence the warrant.

Last night, two police officers from the Law and Order section were at Borrowdale Halfway House where Mamombe is hospitalised and while they said they had not served the warrant, they were maintaining a police presence at the hospital.

Mamombe’s lawyer, Mr Jeremiah Bamu, was also present to monitor his client and see if the police would serve the warrant. Lawyer Mr Alec Muchadehama had told Harare magistrate Mrs Bianca Makwande at the court in the morning that Mamombe could not attend court as she was admitted at Borrowdale Halfway House.

But no documentation was presented from the doctor nor proof that she was an in-patient, both of which the magistrate wanted as a matter of routine.

She is jointly charged with other MDC-Alliance members Netsai Marova and Cecilia Chimbiri, who did come to court and were ordered to return on September 29 for trial. Mr Muchadehama applied for a postponement of the trial saying the defence wanted time to allow Mamombe to heal and be fit to stand trial.

“The first accused (Mamombe) is unable to attend court today because on September 4 she was taken ill suffering from what the doctors described as an anxiety disorder. “She is currently admitted at Borrowdale Halfway House where her condition is being managed by a doctor. The doctor advised that she is unable to attend the trial,” he told the court.

Mr Muchadehama said Mamombe was not in wilful default and the defence had arranged for Dr Fungisai Mazhandu to testify on her condition in court, but the doctor failed to attend.

He said they wrote a letter on September 7 notifying the court of Mamombe’s condition, which also prompted them to seek a variation of her bail reporting conditions. The court relaxed Mamombe’s bail conditions following the notification.

State counsel, Mr Michael Reza, opposed to the application for postponement of trial saying there was no documentary evidence from the doctor to prove that Mamombe was admitted and receiving treatment.

The letter last week only referred to reporting conditions and spoke nothing about her ability to attend the trial. The medical report which was filed in the record does not show where Mamombe was admitted.

COVID-19 restrictions: Inter-city bus services resume

COVID-19 restrictions: Inter-city bus services resume. Cabinet yesterday also approved the reopening of the Central Registry for the issuance of birth certificates, national registration and passports, but new rules and times will be in place to avoid long queues and the risk of Covid-19 infection.

Inter-city public transport will now resume under strict health guidelines following the reopening of examination classes in schools and the resumption of domestic tourism, but operators of long-distance buses need to re-register and vehicles will be rechecked.

Inter-city travel was suspended when the national lockdown started on March 31 to contain the spread of Covid-19 infections. However, yesterday Cabinet approved proposals for the return of long-distance buses but under strict Covid-19 preventative guidelines informed by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Despite the continued easing of restrictions, Cabinet reiterated that Zimbabwe was not out of the woods yet in its fight against the pandemic which has so far infected more than 7 000 people, killing more than 200.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Senator Monica Mutsvangwa announced the latest loosening of the regulations in Harare last night after the Cabinet meeting. “Cabinet further approved the resumption of inter-city travel to facilitate the smooth movement of examination candidates, citizens and visitors.

“Transporters who wish to ferry passengers for inter-city travel should register with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development to ensure that they strictly comply with standard operating procedures for their sector which are compliant to the WHO guidelines and all Covid-19 regulations. In support of this service, the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) should also resume its services.”

Minister Mutsvangwa said following the resumption of domestic tourism, employees in the sector should comply with prescribed Covid-19 regulations. In terms of testing in the tourism sector, only international travellers were required to provide a negative PCR Covid-19 certificate issued 48 hours before departure for Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe has tested more than 200 000 people, with Minister Mutsvangwa clarifying the criteria used to test for Covid-19 as prescribed by WHO. “In terms of testing the Ministry of Health and Child Care has, in line with WHO guidelines, adopted a symptom-based management approach, which prioritises the testing of those people showing Covid-19 symptoms,” she said.

Cabinet also gave permission to the Central Registry to resume operations under WHO guidelines and among other things, clear the backlog in issuing birth certificates, national registration and passports.

“In order to facilitate access to critical documentation from the Central Registry during the Covid-19 induced lockdown, Cabinet has approved that the Central Registry should reopen and offer services, such as the issuance of birth and death certificates, national registrations as well as passports.

“Measures are being put in place to ensure that operations at Central Registry offices, which are usually characterised by overcrowding, are in line with the Ministry of Health and Child Care and WHO protocols in order to curtail the transmission of Covid-19.

“Members of the public will be informed on the timelines for accessing the critical services.” Cabinet also authorised the partial reopening of the Department of Immigration’s client service centre for the purpose of processing short-term investor work and student permits, issuing visas at ports of entry and resume enforcement operations through the compliance section.

The National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe will be opened as well to allow visitors access to National Monuments that include the National Heroes Acre and National History Museum.

Zimbabwe Passenger Transport Organisation secretary Mr Wilfred Chibage welcomed the return of the intercity travel and implored members to adhere to prescribed measures for the safety of passengers and themselves.

“We are happy we have been allowed to resume operations. This is good for us and passengers who faced a lot of challenges in travelling. They were being charged exorbitant fares by the illegal transporters,” he said.

He, however, urged caution on the part of the membership saying transporters were supposed to wait for full briefings before they resumed operations.

“Maybe in three days we will be told what to do for us to operate in a safe environment so we urge our members to wait and be informed on what they are supposed to do,” said Mr Chibage.

A bus operator, Mr Kudakwashe Mugari, welcomed the return of intercity travel saying: “As transport operators, we welcome the opening up of intercity travel by the Government. We will continue to combat new daily challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We have a duty also as bus operators to take measures in line with WHO guidelines that will not endanger the lives of passengers,” said Mr Mugari.

Clap back of the month: Pokello doesn’t play when it comes to her weight. If there is one thing Poello Nare does not tolerate especially when it’s about her, you all should all know is that she doe not want to talk or to address issues that have to do with her body weight.

No matter how much people might try to hurt, hate her this one is just one person who is on another level. You can try to do whatever you want to brink her down but she keeps going up.

The queen of swagger as she calls herself is always on point and everything she touches turns into gold. The queen has been dragged in the mud so many times but she keeps on coming as the champion.

Zim dollar gained 1,2 per cent on the US dollar in yesterday’s auction

Zim dollar gained 1,2 per cent on the US dollar in yesterday’s auction. The local currency has now gained a total of two per cent on the US dollar since reaching its lowest point of $83,3994 in the last August auction with small gains in each of the last three auctions. Bids have remained within the same tight bracket, but more importers have been placing bids in the lower part of the acceptable range.

The Zimbabwe dollar gained 1,2 per cent on the US dollar in yesterday’s auctions to reach $81,7076 as allotments went over US$20 million for the first time to reach a record total of US$21,17 million.

The ready access that producers and essential importers have to foreign currency at a stable rate through the auction system has seen major falls in monthly price rises, ZimStat confirmed yesterday with the latest inflation figures.

The top and bottom successful bids in the main auction remained at $88 and $75 for the second week running, so the slight drop in the exchange rate was due to some importers putting in slightly lower bids, but remaining within a range that the Reserve Bank has signalled is generally acceptable although for the second week running it said that there was some pro-rata allocation to maintain import priority categories.

Allotments on the main auction totalled just over US$20,02 million, breaking the previous record set last week of US$18,33 million. On the SMEs auction allotments went over US$1 million for the first time to reach just under US$1,15 million.

On the main auction, only 10 bids were disqualified, with 164 being successful. As usual, bids were disqualified because importers wanted to pay for something not on the import priority list or had not completed their paperwork for previous exports and imports.

On the SMEs auction there were 12 disqualified bids, but 84 successful bids. The effectiveness of the foreign currency auction system was buttressed by the latest inflation figures released by ZimStat yesterday.

While annual inflation figures are falling these are still taking into account the wild jumps in prices in the first six months of the year and the rising inflation in the last few months of last year. But since the auctions were introduced at the end of June there has been a high level of price stability seen in the month-on-month figures.

Economist and advisor to the RBZ, Mr Eddie Cross said there is a stronger correlation between the auction system and the monthly inflation rate. “What is significant is the month-on-month figure. It’s almost solely due to the auction and recent stability,” he said.

Month-on-month inflation saw a sharp slowdown in August. The rate in August was 8,44 percent, which was 27,09 percentage points lower than 35,53 percent in July. Forex allocations over the past couple of weeks have been buoyed by the 20 percent foreign currency surrender policy for retailers that the RBZ introduced in last month’s Monetary Policy Statement.

The move has pushed up reserve money numbers, but this should only be a short-term consequence. Reserve money is that part of the money supply that is actually available for spending by depositors.

“Reserve money increased by $1 037 million over the week ending 4 September 2020, largely reflecting an increase of $969 million in banks’ deposits at the Reserve Bank,” said the central bank in a recent update.

“The increase in banks’ liquidity was attributable to the purchase of foreign exchange from the market by RBZ and Government expenditures, all of which raised the deposit levels in the banking system. Foreign exchange purchases by RBZ are mainly for funding the auction.”

Last week, economic analyst Persistence Gwanyanya said the RBZ’s move will boost foreign currency flows on the formal market. As in all the previous forex auctions to date, raw materials accounted for the bulk of the allotments with US$8,5 million on the main auction and US$216 017 on the SME board.

Machinery and equipment came in second with US$3,1 million on the main and US$218 345 on the SMEs, and consumables, in third place on the main auction US$1,3 million, but topped the SMEs auction at US$291 322.

The continued strengthening of the Zimbabwe dollar comes on the back of growing confidence that the official foreign currency auction trading system is a reliable source of foreign currency for businesses.

Zisco targets firing up all units

Zisco targets firing up all units. Acting board chairperson, Engineer Martin Manuhwa, revealed the new strategy while briefing an inter-ministerial task-force set up to oversee the revival of the integrated steelworks during a familiarisation tour of the plant last Thursday.

State-owned Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company (Zisco) has come up with a short-term revival strategy targeting resuscitation of the subsidiaries, an official said.

Zisco stopped operations in 2008 due to lack of capital to recapitalise and poor management. With its furnaces having the capacity to produce up to one million tonnes annually, the company was among Zimbabwe’s major foreign currency earners.

Eng Manhuwa said while the Government was working on courting potential investors for long-term plans, there was a need to focus on reviving subsidiaries in the short term.

Ziscosteel either partly or wholly owns equity in companies including ZimChem, Lancashire Steel and Buchwa Iron Mining Company (BIMCO), the holder of iron concessions.

“We have done an assessment in the short-term in the Ziscosteel revival roadmap, which will begin by looking at how we can put back BIMCO into its mining operations,” said Eng Manhuwa. “We are currently selling waste and boulders among other things so that we can get capital to restart the operations.”

He said ZimChem was operating at a lower scale and more investment was needed to ramp up production. Plans were also underway to resuscitate the Zisco mills section selected sections for manufacturing processes whose output would provide feedstock for Lancashire Steel. “We want to put back production of lime from lime fields, we also want to resuscitate the mill’s section with our four rolling mills as well as the bar rod mill, which makes billets and other sections for the manufacturing process.”

“The board and management are working flat out on the thrust that we revive Zisco’s subsidiaries, which are a low hanging fruit. We have the Zisco coke ovens and the ZimChem, which are lucrative subsidiaries and when revived can go a long way in helping revive Ziscosteel,” said Eng Manuhwa.

He said the long-term revival efforts would be done once the Government secures a serious investment partner. Eng Manhuwa said there was scope for positive prospects at Zisco, adding the company was ripe for local, regional and international investors.

Recently, Industry and Commerce Minister Sekai Nzenza said there was a renewed interest from international investors, particularly in Australia and China following the collapse of negotiations between the company and R & F of China late last year.

Eng Manuhwa said the desire was to make Zisco an anchor of steel supplies in the region.

“We have missed opportunities in terms of supply of iron and steel to major construction projects that took place like the Hwange Power Station Expansion and the Kariba one as well. The long-term thrust is, therefore, to come up with a robust strategy for the steel industry in Zimbabwe and a partner that would revive Ziscosteel using the latest technology and local content as much as possible,” said Eng Manuhwa. The development comes as the board announced the cancellation of the $255 million ZimCoke deal with a view of taking them over.

Zisco is 91 percent owned by the Government. The remaining 9 percent is held by Louth Minerals SA (3 percent), Tonexin Investments (2,8 percent), Stewarts and Lloyds (Overseas) (1,76 percent), Franconian Investments (0,81 percent), Amzim Limited (0,75 percent) and Zambia Copper Investment Limited (0,13 percent).

Rami Chuene talks about gender-based-violence

As gender-based violence (GBV) continues to make South African women live in fear, actress Rami Chuene quickly shut down a tweep who suggested women needed to participate in “fasting” for God to hear their cry and end GBV.

Rami, who has made it no secret that she believes in God, named female Bible characters when she dismissed the idea that for GBV to stop in Mzansi, women had to fast and pray it away.

The tweep who poked Rami and many other women tweeted: “SA woman, may I humbly request that we couple these GBV protests with a five-day fast from September 21 to 25. No makeup, no weave (Esther 4:16). May God hear our cry and heal our country

Rami made it clear the answer for her , and many of her followers, was a firm “no”.”No. No amount of Esther, Ruth, Naomi, Sarah and Mary, not even the bad asses Delilah, Sapphira, Jezebel and mother of deception, Eve, will get me participating in this

Rami Chuene

Rami women had nothing else of themselves to give to fight the attackmen have launched against them in the form of GBV. She said she was personally not okay with sacrificing the little to nothing she has after giving everything.

“Everything has been taken from women. Everything! How then are we okay to take even the nothing that’s left?”

Rami wasn’t the only one who thought the “fast for five days” approach was outrageous. Actress Bonnie Mbuli was one of many other women who felt the same.

Zim mobile phone penetration rate down by 6.4%

Zim mobile phone penetration rate down by 6.4%. The penetration rate fell after a decline in active mobile subscriptions, which were down 6.7% to 12.8 million from 13.7 million. With consumer disposable incomes depleting by each day in the second quarter due to rising inflation, active internet and data subscriptions also declined by 4% to 8.3 million from 8.6 million.

Zimbabwe’s mobile penetration rate was down 6.4% in the second quarter to 87.8% from 94.0% recorded in the first quarter according to statistics released by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe. This resulted in a decline to 56.7% on the internet penetration rate from 59.1% in the previous quarter.

However, due to increased internet hours from off-site working, telecommuting, as well as e-learning, mobile internet in data traffic increased by 56.2% to 10.407 terabyte from 6.661 terabyte recorded in the first quarter.

Despite a fall in volumes of both voice and Internet, mobile telephone networks recorded a 45.8% in revenue to $3 billion from $2.1 billion in the first quarter. As the norm under hyperinflation costs also grew at a rate of 217% to $16.1 billion from $5.1 billion recorded in the previous quarter.

Fixed telephone network revenue was up 39.4% to $430.4 million from $308.9 million. However, the sector also saw a leap of 44.4% in operating costs from $239 million to $345.6 million.

COVID-19 disrupted business in various sectors and Postal and Courier’s services were not an exception. The sector saw a fall in both revenues and volumes as most parts of the country were under lockdown in Q2. Postal and Courier’s volumes declined by 79.7% to 272 881 items from 1.3 million items recorded in the first quarter. Revenue was down 2.1% to $69.4 million from $70.9 million but during the period under review operating costs increased by 13% to $58.7 million.

The ICT sector continues to be affected by foreign currency shortages as most of their equipment is procured outside the borders. The Internet continues to be expensive since Zimbabwe is a landlocked country and uses undersea cables via Mozambique and South Africa.

On the outlook POTRAZ believes that retaining subscribers will be the key objective for mobile service providers. An increase in promotions mainly for voice will increase in the current quarter as a way of luring new and old subscribers. Internet activity will continue to rise despite a fall new subscriber base as the pandemic has brought new ways of doing business to the country.

After three tumultuous years of marriage, superstar rapper Cardi B filed for divorce Tuesday from her husband, rapper Offset, according to court records. The couple, who married secretly in September 2017, had already been through a well-publicized rough patch that resulted in her announcing their break-up almost two years ago.

We got a lot of love for each other but things just haven’t been working out between us for a long time,” she said in a December 2018 video on Instagram, where she has some 75.5 million followers. “It’s just like, I guess we just grew out of love, but we’re not together anymore.

Cardi B

But by about a year later the pair had reconciled and Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar, told Vogue at the time that the split was over her husband’s infidelity.

“We have come to a clear understanding. For me, monogamy is the only way,” she said.

Cardi B is seeking custody of 2-year-old daughter Kulture and child support from Offset, whose real name is Kiari Cephus.

A hearing is set for November 4, according to the Fulton County court in Georgia, which is Offset’s home state.

Despite the turmoil in her personal life, Cardi B has rocketed to success from her humble origins in New York’s Bronx. Her 2017 hit Bodak Yellow brought her fame, and 2020 chart topper WAP brought her controversy.
