Somizi Mhlongo accused of stealing idea for his show Dinner at Somizi

Idols SA judge and Metro FM presenter Somizi Mhlongo‘s popular reality show Dinner at Somizi‘s is marred by allegations of intellectual property theft after a man, who claims the idea as his, was excluded.

Hastings Moeng, 31, says he is the brains behind the popular DSTV’s 1Magic TV show which centres around Mhlongo hosting celebrity guests for dinner at his home.

Moeng’s lawyer Mabu Marweshe confirmed to Sowetan that his client is demanding an apology for his intellectual property being used without his consent. He also wants to know how much the show has made so that he can negotiate his share of royalties and to be acknowledged going forward.

“I can confirm that we act on behalf of Hastings Moeng and we gave issued a letter of demand to Multichoice. I cannot however divulge much … but my client is seeking recognition for his idea,” Marweshe said.

Sowetan has learnt that Moeng, who is also in the entertainment industry, had sent an email to Mhlongo in July 2014 proposing a light-hearted TV show to be titled ‘Dinner kwa Somizi’, a Zulu equivalent of the current title.

In the email which Sowetan has seen, dated July 28, 2014, sent by Moeng to Mhlongo and his then close associate Themba Zuma, Moeng proposes the show and states that he has had this idea since 2010.

“Please receive this [as] an expression of interest to partner up with you on the idea. I’ve not done a show before, though I am confident that between us we have a database of the right people to bring this to life,” wrote Moeng.

Moeng also unpacked in his letter that ‘Dinner kwa Somizi’ would be a weekly 13-part show that would see Mhlongo chatting “to fellow entertainers over dinner”.

Dinner at Somizi’s has since hosted actress Rami Chuene and TV personality Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye, among others since it began in July.

“Each 24-minute-long episode captures the drama that goes into preparing each meal as Somizi and his guests sweat it up in the kitchen,” wrote Moeng in his proposal. He had proposed that the show be “quirky and light-hearted”.

Moneg also wrote that as “Somizi, famous for not mincing his words, asks each of his guests the questions on everyone’s mind that no one has ever dared to ask in a witty manner without offending them”.

The letter of demand sent to MultiChoice, including CEO Calvo Mawela, stated that after Moeng had met Mhlongo personally around June 2015, at Dainfern Square, northern Johannesburg, “an agreement was reached that the idea was commercially viable and should be pursued”.

Moeng then met with Legend Manqele, the executive producer of Dinner at Somizi’s in 2016 to discuss putting the show together and sent the synopsis of the show to him in September 2016, according to his letter to MultiChoice.

MultiChoice spokesperson Benedict Maaga said they were aware of Moeng’s allegations and they had reached out to him to discuss the matter further.

“When content is commissioned from producers, as in this case, MultiChoice obtains undertakings that all intellectual property rights in relation to the show have been cleared. We reached out to Mr Moeng a week ago to discuss the matter and we await his response,” Maaga said.

He added: “We are also engaging the show’s producer. This claim will not impact on the airing of the remaining episodes of the show.”

When approached for his side of the story yesterday, Mhlongo, after Sowetan had gone through the formalities, he said: “I’m not interested, bye”. He didn’t respond to subsequent text messages sent to his mobile number.

Manqele asked for questions to be sent via email as he said he needed to consult everyone involved in the show before responding to Moeng’s allegations.

“We are aware of this and have taken things through our legal team,” Manqele said.

Chamisa, Khupe fights crippling local authorities

Chamisa, Khupe fights crippling local authorities. The most affected cities are Harare, Bulawayo, Marondera, Gwanda, Beitbridge and Victoria Falls. The recalls have effectively crippled Chamisa’s party which controlled the majority of the country’s 32 urban councils.

The turf war between MDC-T leader Thokozani Khupe and her MDC Alliance rival Nelson Chamisa has left operations in the country’s major cities and towns paralysed after she recalled a record 84 councillors among them, three mayors, in a single swoop, accusing them of crossing the floor.

MDC-T spokesperson Khalipani Phugeni confirmed the recalls, insisting the party was simply following the law. “We did recall eight councillors from Bulawayo for one reason, that they have since left the party. It might be sad, but we have to do this. Constitutionally, once one leaves the party, they cannot then claim to be our representatives in council,” he said.

Khupe’s party also recalled five councillors from Marondera and others from Victoria Falls amid reports that the axe would soon fall on Chitungwiza, Kwekwe, Mutare and Masvingo MDC Alliance councillors.

This follows the recall of 23 Harare councillors, who include former mayor Herbert Gomba, amid reports that the new mayor Jacob Mafume may face the axe, this time from his party the People’s Democratic Party.

Marondera mayor Chengetai Murowa and four other councillors namely Size Vilela (ward 11), Charles Ngwena (ward 4), Wonder Siriya (ward 6) and Misheck Manyere (ward 5) were also axed. Gwanda mayor Jastone Mazhale was also shown the exit door after refusing to pay allegiance to Khupe.

The affected Bulawayo councillors are Tinashe Kambarami (ward 3), Concillia Mlalazi (ward 18), Alderman Earnest Rafamoyo (ward 20), Tinevimbo Maphosa (ward 21), Alderman Norman Hlabani (ward 26), Alderman Clayton Zana (ward 19), Donaldson Mabuto (ward 9) and Lillian Mlilo (ward 16).

The former Deputy Prime Minister has been accused of pushing a Zanu-PF agenda targeting MDC Alliance elected officials with a view to pave way for a commission. But Phugeni said the party was geared for by-elections and the matter would be settled by the people, dismissing allegations of pursuing a Zanu-PF agenda.

He said the narrative that the MDCT was working with Zanu-PF to appoint commissions was baseless as the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) had made an announcement for by-elections.

On Monday, the MDC-T acting leader recalled Beitbridge mayor Morgan Ncube and two other councillors, Granger Nyoni (ward 5) and Agnes Tore (ward 6).

The MDC-T leader recalled more than 20 MDC Alliance Members of Parliament, whom she claimed had ceased to be members of her party ever since the March 30 Supreme Court ruling that retained the 2014 structures after nullifying Chamisa’s appointment by the late former MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai in 2016.

However, the MDC Alliance remained defiant yesterday, insisting that byelections would end the chaos. Zec lifted the suspension of elections and will announce dates for holding of by-elections.

In lifting the suspension of electoral processes yesterday, Zec chairperson Priscilla Chigumba said: “The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission would like to inform the public that it has with immediate effect lifted the suspension of electoral activities following measures taken by the government to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

She said the electoral timelines for pending by-elections would be announced in due course, adding that stricter measures would be applied in all the processes. MDC Alliance secretary for presidential affairs, Jameson Timba said the party would fight the recalls politically and legally.

“These unlawful actions are being allowed because there is a serious breakdown of the rule of law in Zimbabwe, further confirming the Zimbabwean crisis,” Timba said.

“We will respond to the recalls legally and politically. Legally, we will do so to set the record straight and for posterity. Politically, we will end this Zanu-PF-Mwonzora-Khupe axis of madness by restoring the people’s will in an election.”

Report: ANC defiantly tells Zanu-PF that it will be back for the MDC meeting

Report: ANC defiantly tells Zanu-PF that it will be back for the MDC meeting. Zimbabwe is in the throes of its worst political and economic crises in a decade, and critics accuse President Emmerson Mnangagwa of persecuting opposition members and perceived political opponents under the guise of COVID-19 lockdown regulations.

THE South African ruling African National Congress (ANC) party yesterday defiantly told Zanu-PF that its delegation would soon head back to Harare to meet other stakeholders as part of efforts to initiate dialogue to resolve Zimbabwe’s political and economic crises.

Lately, activists have used a Twitter hashtag #ZimbabweanLivesMatter to draw international attention to gross human rights violations and the deterioration of the rule of law since Mnangagwa was adjudged the winner of a highly-contested election in July 2018, and to pile global pressure on his government.

Mnangagwa replaced long-time ruler Robert Mugabe in a November 2017 military coup, but critics say he has failed to keep his promise to break with Mugabe’s authoritarian style.

The ruling Zanu-PF party vehemently denies that there is a crisis in Zimbabwe, a claim it repeated during the two meetings with the ANC delegations. But ANC, a fellow liberation party, has insisted that its northern neighbour is in a “mess” which required urgent intervention.

Zanu-PF has refused the ANC delegations permission to meet other stakeholders on their two visits, but appears to have relented.

In a statement yesterday, the ANC said it was “excited” about Zanu-PF secretary for administration Obert Mpofu’s position on the possibility of the ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule-led delegation to meet other stakeholders, including the MDC Alliance, Transform Zimbabwe and United States ambassador to Zimbabwe Brian Nichols, among others.

The named organisations requested to meet the ANC delegation last week, but Zanu-PF remained adamant that such would not take place, accusing the ANC of playing “big brother”.

“The ANC welcomes and concurs with the comments made by the Zanu-PF secretary for administration Cde Obert Mpofu that the recent engagement between ANC and Zanu-PF was both frank and constructive,” Magashule said in a statement.

He reiterated the need for Zanu-PF to respect human rights and end the challenges faced by the citizens. “The ANC, therefore, warmly welcomes the constructive approach of Zanu-PF with regards to the ANC meeting with other stakeholders, opposition parties and civil society organisations in Zimbabwe,” Magashule said.

“In this regard, it was agreed that the ANC will in the foreseeable future return to Zimbabwe in order to proceed with these envisaged meetings.”

Zanu-PF also denied there was a crisis in Zimbabwe and accused the opposition of working in cahoots with the US and more than 4 000 non-governmental organisations in the country to porttray a “non-existent crisis”. Magashule described his delegation’s mission as successful.

However, the delegation was under fire back in South Africa for using an Air Force jet during its visit to Zimbabwe. Magashule conceded that the delegation erred and promised to reimburse the government.

This followed an outcry from opposition forces questioning why the ruling party delegation used an Air Force jet despite the fact that Defence minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula was also part of the delegation.

ZIMSEC extends registration deadline

ZIMSEC extends registration deadline. This is the second time that Zimsec has extended the registration process. Zimsec says the examinations are going ahead with the council having already completed the printing of Grade 7 examination material.

The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) has extended the registration period for November 2020 Ordinary and Advanced Level examinations to cater for pupils and schools that failed to do so due to different reasons related to the COVID-19-induced lockdown.

Marking of the June examination is starting this week with results expected before the November examinations commence. No late registration fees will be charged to candidates and centres.

The provision is in accordance with the Government’s announcement that all potential candidates will access the 2020 examinations. Zimsec board chairperson Professor Eddie Mwenje said: “The registration will start on the September 28 once they open schools and then it will close of October 2.

“Just like we said, the rationale for this is that you know some of the students could not travel to register during the lockdown period.”

Former Warriors and Bosso keeper Kapini fired from his SA club

Former Warriors and Bosso keeper Kapini fired from his SA club. After struggling with injuries during the first half of last season, the veteran Zimbabwean shot-stopper appeared to have re-established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper at Highlands Park towards the end of the just-ended 2019-2020 season.

Former Warriors goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini has expressed his shock and disappointment at being unceremoniously offloaded by Absa Premiership side Highlands Park after a successful five-year spell at the South African club.

However, the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Johannesburg club, amid reports that it has been put up for sale due to the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic, has cast doubt over the future of several players at the club including Kapini.

Highlands Park has reportedly received an offer from TS Galaxy president Tim Sukazi for the franchise but the deal is yet to be sanctioned by the South African PSL.

The former Highlanders captain revealed on social media Tuesday he has been notified that his services were no longer required at the club. “Just disappointed, went for morning training today and after training the team manager told us that we are not in coaches plans, that’s life God knows why,” Kapini said in a post on his Twitter account.

Kapini is one of the longest-serving players in South African football after a lengthy career spanning almost 16 years. He made his breakthrough move to South Africa in 2006 to join the now-defunct Platinum Stars after spending five years with Bulawayo giants Highlanders.

The 36-year-old Kapini, whose age has been a subject of constant debate among local football fans, spent five years at the club before leaving to join AmaZulu in 2011.

He has been at Highlands Park since 2015 and helped the side earn promotion to the topflight league in a successful career which also saw him being handed the club’s captaincy.

He becomes the second Zimbabwean to be shown the exit door at Highlands Park after Tendai Ndoro, whose career is also currently in limbo.

Tino Kadewere and Marvelous Nakamba start for their Euro teams

Tino Kadewere and Marvelous Nakamba start for their Euro teams. Zimbabwe international striker, Tino Kadewere, and midfielder, Marvelous Nakamba, were thrown into the starting XI of their clubs in France and England last night.

Kadewere, who came in as a substitute for Olympique Lyon, in the French side’s last game, was thrust into the starting ine-up for the league match against Montpellier. Lyon coach, Rudi Garcia, threw Kadewere into the fray, ahead of highly-rated Dutchman and captain, Memphis Depay, who has been tipped to move to Spanish giants Barcelona.

French international forward, Moussa Dembele, was also pushed onto the bench. While Kadewere has been confident he could crack, into the Lyon starting XI, he is unlikely to have dreamt that his big chance would come this early.

Tino Kadewere

His Warriors counterpart, Nakamba, also made his first start for English Premiership side, Aston Villa, in the second round of the Carabao Cup last night. The match came just six months after Villa lost 1-2 in the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City at Wembley in March.

Nakamba lost his place, in the Villa first team, towards the end of the season as the Birmingham side battled their way to safety. However, Villa manager, Dean Smith, threw Nakamba into the mix last night in what was his team’s first competitive match this season.

Villa were not in action, in the first week of the Premiership campaign, and hosted Manchester United in a friendly, at Villa Park, which they won 1-0. There had been speculation Nakamba was set to leave Villa Park this season.

However, it’s now certain that the Zimbabwean holding midfielder will stay, for another season, at the club. The same, though, cannot be said about his Tanzanian counterpart, Mbwana Samatta. The striker’s future at the club continues to come under the microscope with fresh reports claiming there is new interest in his services.

Nakamba

Samatta, 27, was an £8.5 million arrival from Belgian club Genk in the January transfer window having finished as top scorer in the Pro League in the 2018/19 season. He provided a much-needed boost to Smith’s attacking options after Wesley suffered a long-term knee injury in the win at Burnley on New Year’s Day.

But, with Villa having broken their transfer record to land Ollie Watkins from Brentford — and planning to sign another new forward — Samatta is already being linked with a move away from the club.

Reports in Turkey have indicated that Besiktas are interested and now TV channel A Spor say Fenerbahce are also keen in the striker’s services.

The report claims Samatta is seen a “top target’’ for the Super Lig side after the departure of last season’s top scorer Vedat Muriqi to Lazio and a loan move could be wrapped up before the end of the month. Samatta scored once in 14 Premier League appearances as Villa achieved safety and struck in the Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley.

Whether it be at Villa Park or elsewhere, the Tanzania international is intent on improving in the upcoming campaign. Posting a picture on Instagram alongside Villa coach John Terry earlier this month, Samatta said “From the beginning, it has been a dream.

“I used to watch them play in a local joint; today let me admit I am lucky or maybe it is through the hard work that I am now working with them. “It might be luck or hard work or both but I am happy with what I have achieved.

“I have not yet reached where I want to be. However, I take this opportunity to challenge all the upcoming players to give their best knowing they can achieve their dreams.

“It is possible, you cannot fail.” Meanwhile, attacking midfielder, Bertrand Traore, yesterday passed his medical at Villa and is now set to join the club from French side Olympic Lyon.

Alois Bunjira: Khama should go back to Mamelodi Sundowns. ZIFA President hopeful, legendary Zimbabwean footballer Alois Bunjira has made sensational claims that Kaizer Chiefs player Khama Billiat must go back to his former team Mamelodi Sundowns, The Herald reports.

This came after Khama recently had a bad season at Amakhosi which finished as a runner up to Billiat’s former team Sundowns.

Writing on social media Bunjira said: After all has been said and done, I believe Khama Billiat should go back to Mamelodi Sundowns,” Bunjira wrote on social media. Pitso (Mosimane) loves Khama, he has publicly said it many times. He shows it. Sundowns play the kind of football that Khama fits into very well.

In Peter Ndlovu he had a big brother who saw it all and was guiding him, Peter never hid his brotherly love for Khama. For Khama to have such a great man like Peter as a fellow countryman at the club can only give a player that sense security and belonging.

Alois Bunjira

Patrice Motsepe admires the young man, the Sundowns fans love Khama, they treated him well and showered him with all the real love. We all know what a great player Khama is and he needs a team where he can express himself and thrive. Sundowns are the perfect fit. The hatchet should be buried if there was ever any hatchet. Zimbabwe needs a firing Khama. Come back home to Sundowns Khama.

Khama had been under fire from both his coach at Kaizer Chiefs who accused him of being an age cheat, his fans who said he has last scored a long time ago and even commentators who made fun of his continuous goalless streak before he scored twice in the last 2 games he played.

Having worked for various radio stations in the past (including Star FM in Zimbabwe, Zambezi FM (Livingstone, Zambia) and Pan African Radio (Lusaka, Zambia) opened me up to the fact that the majority of radio stations do not have women in the ownership structures. Most women are presenters and sometimes work in marketing or occasionally as management.

But not once have I had the opportunity to work for a radio station owned by a woman yet women are the majority in the population of this continent. I found that also there is a serious age hurdle with many young people being assigned jobs as an on-air talent but being denied leadership positions in the organizations.

I felt that as a young woman with the relevant experience and training I have to break the cycle both for youth and for women. Another motivator was because as a musician I found that most stations cater for artists who have a budget plus management to negotiate sufficient airplay for them. In fact, without some contacts at the radio stations, many independent artists struggle to get on the air. Bantu FM intends to bridge that gap by a simplified admissions process and also by giving more airplay to independent artists on our playlists.

Speaking about the funding, her team, the target market and the reception of her station so far, Ndlovu said: I myself Nonkululeko Vundla am the founder of the station and the main investor. I also have one partner in the USA who is an African American brother by the name of Michael Randle who understood the vision of the station and decided to be part of it. We are however talking to other potential investors who would like to come on board and help us expand the vision.

We have a team of 18 on-air staff while behind the scenes a team of 7 people are part of Bantu FM’s technical and administrative workforce. The reception during our first two months on air has been phenomenal with a lot of our audience coming from the Pan African space. Many people have volunteered their services and are really excited about what this means for black media globally.

The majority of our audience are in the United States and part of the African American community. Many of our listeners are eager to connect with the Motherland so Bantu FM has become that bridge for them. We also have a large following from Africans who have relocated to the diaspora but still have a deep love for African music, culture and history.

The Bantu Queen and the station manager of Bantu FM said they do not cater for a specific nationality or country when she revealed that they support all African languages and cultures

We do not cater for any specific country, tribe or nationality. Instead our content is a mixture of music and talk shows from black people across the globe. We don’t discriminate on any African even if they don’t use English we support all African languages and cultures.

GMB Binga Depot supervisor and 2 other arrested for stealing 4 tons of drought relief maize. The trio reportedly connived and forged invoices which they apparently used to divert 74 by 50kg bags of maize from the depot to an unknown place, before claiming that they maize had been delivered to Sunrise Children’s Home at Binga Centre and Kabwe Children’s Home in Pashu within the district.

A GMB Binga Depot supervisor Zebron Hungwe a clerk Gladys Mugande, and a district’s social welfare officer Regret Mudungwe were arrested after they allegedly stole close to 4 tonnes of drought relief maize from the depot, The Chronicle reports.

The matter came to light in court where the 3 stood accused of fraud and theft of trust property. It is the state’s case that: During the period extending from July to September and at GMB Binga depot, the three accused persons connived and issued out dispatch documents purporting to account for maize issued to Sunrise Children’s Home and Kabwe Children’s Home

Mr Mabhaudi visited Sunrise Children’s Home for investigations and established that no such delivery of maize had been made. The home has a monthly allocation of four bags of maize which its authorities confirmed receiving for the month of August as opposed to 32 bags as alleged through the forged invoices.

Kabwe Children’s Home has a monthly allocation of seven bags of maize contrary to 46 indicated in the fraudulent records by the trio. The trio was released on bail and investigation are still ongoing at the depot to determine the amount of maize the trio might have stolen.

Worry as Task Mine Gold panners are still trapped underground for a week now. Hope is slowly fading at Task Mine in Chegutu as 5 gold panners (Makorokoza) are still trapped in the shaft that collapsed while they were underground on Thursday last week, New Zimbabwe reports.

Mashonaland West acting police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Ian Kohwera confirmed the unfortunate news and said a rescue mission being conducted by a multi-sectoral team is currently underway and unfortunately none of the 5 miners have been rescued:

The rescue efforts are still in progress but up to now, none of the trapped miners has been rescued, The miners have been identified as:

Crynos Nyamukanga,
Munashe Nyamukanga (17),
Shingai Gwatidzo (20),
Costantino Dzinoreva
Charles.
Reports claim agencies from the airforce and the army are on the ground and trying to rescue the trapped panners. The rescue mission is being hampered by the absence of underground plans and the rescuers need to do a proper ground survey to carry out the rescue mission.

Report: Demand for day-old chicks increase

Report: Demand for day-old chicks increase. Livestock and Meat Advisory Council (LMAC) has said the demand for day-old chicks has surged in the recent months which has prompted LMAC to lobby for the importation of hatching eggs to boost supply before the onset of the festive season, Chronicle reports

While requesting the government to temporarily lift the import duty on fertilised eggs, LMAC said: As a result of the impact of prevailing macro-economic conditions and Covid-19 response measures, demand for day-old chicks declined significantly and production dropped by 28 per cent between the first and second quarters of 2020 As the poultry business opens up again, the demand is steadily increasing.

The import of hatching eggs is, therefore, necessary to alleviate the short supply and ensure availability of day-old chicks going into the festive season, where demand is usually the highest

LMAC also gave the following statistics about egg production in the country according to the publication: A total of 74-million-day-old broiler chicks were produced last year reflecting, a 19 per cent decline from the 91 million chicks produced in 2018.

There was an estimated 24 per cent increase in table egg production recorded in 2019 (50,4 million dozen) compared to 36,4 million dozen the previous year Broiler day-old chick production averaged 6,2 million chicks a month with a total annual production of 74 million in 2019.
