Uzalo’s Thabo Mnguni demands his money

Uzalo actor Thabo Mnguni is demanding royalties from repeats of the popular comedy Family Bonds.

Thabo, who plays Mbatha in Uzalo, played Bra Steve in the sitcom that aired on SABC1 between 2007 and 2009.

He said the SABC had been ducking and diving.

It has been three years now and I’m struggling to get my money. The last time I spoke with Aobakwe Sekwati from the SABC was early in 2020,” he said.

“He sent me claim forms that I filled in and emailed back to him.

“I even sent hard copies to his office by courier. Whenever I call him, his cellphone is on voicemail and his landline rings unanswered.”

Thabo said he was frustrated as he needed the money.

“I worked for this money, it wasn’t charity. The SABC should pay since it generates advertising revenue from these repeats,” said Thabo.

He said the last time he received money from the public broadcaster was in 2016.

“I am a family man. The money will come in handy since there are a lot of Covid-19 restrictions,” he said.

SABC spokeswoman Mmoni Seapolelo said the public broadcaster took royalty queries seriously.

She gave email addresses Thabo could use to contact relevant people.

Thabo said he had been with Uzalo for five years and enjoyed working with the cast and the crew.

“I made my mark and learned a lot from them.

“The atmosphere is heart-warming and I dedicate my growth to them,” he said.

Thabo said he was busy with rehearsals for an industrial theatre play that aims to raise awareness around Covid-19.

The play was put on by his organisation, Amanguni Productions.

Dream Team player George Mbwando blast Warriors captains, Musona and Peter Ndlovu comparisons

Dream Team player George Mbwando blast Warriors captains, Musona and Peter Ndlovu comparisons. Musona recently struck a new career milestone following the national team’s qualification for the upcoming AFCON finals, in Cameroon. This is the second AFCON success as captain of the team.

George Mbwando has said it is “senseless” to try and compare former Warriors skipper Peter Ndlovu and the incumbent Knowledge Musona. The Germany-based former Zimbabwe international, believes both have had fantastic careers, in the national team colours.

He has also been the backbone of the team, when they qualified for 2017, 2019 and now the 2021 Nations Cup finals.

Musona has been hailed widely by many, as the most influential player of his generation. He has scored important goals and has also weighed in with assists, which have helped turn the tide in favour of the Warriors, on countless occasions.

Ndlovu has also had a stellar career, having been the first captain to lead the Warriors to the Promised Land, in 2004 and was again part of the cast at the 2006 AFCON finals.

He scored five of the team’s eight goals in group six when Zimbabwe finished second behind Mali, for their maiden AFCON appearance. He also contributed four goals on the road to Egypt in 2006. Both players have displayed unquestionable commitment, to the national cause.

While Ndlovu has had to give everything, including his limited time, finances and provide leadership on the pitch, Musona has also proved himself by sacrificing a lot for his country.

Mbwando, who was part of the Warriors who qualified for the AFCON finals in Tunisia in 2004, yesterday said it was not fair, to try and compare, the two legends of Zimbabwean football.

“I think it’s senseless to compare Peter and Knowledge. Peter wrote his own piece of history in Zimbabwe football,” said Mbwando. “Knowledge is still writing his own, and he hasn’t played even half of Peter’s national team games. “Let’s just enjoy their achievements, and give support to our captain, to lead our team.

“They are/were both loyal to our country and both are/were brilliant footballers, if not the best we have ever had. “Once again congratulations to the technical team, and the rest of the team. You have to be there to win it. Our boys are there, big up.”

Zimbabwe sealed their place at a fifth AFCON final, with a game to spare, when they beat Botswana 1-0 last week. They finished second, behind holders Algeria, rendering last night’s final round fixture against Zambia, a dead rubber.

Mbwando also appeared in support of coach Zdravko Logarusic who, apparently has set the social media on fire, after he announced, for the second time, he was closing the door on players, who have displayed questionable loyalty to the national flag.

“The young boys who risked their lives to play qualifiers in the pandemic should just go and represent the country in Cameron simple,” said Mbwando.

“Ava vaimboramba kuuya ngavaende vanotambira kuGarden kwambuya vavo. They just want to market themselves for the European leagues by playing the AFCON.”

Former national team goalkeeper Japhet M’parutsa challenged stakeholders to begin preparations for the finals, which have been moved to January-February 2022, because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Warriors have never gone past the group stages at the tournament. “We say well done to the Warriors for qualifying. ZIFA president Felton Kamambo and his team, coach Loga and his assistants Lloyd Chitembwe, Tonderayi Ndiraya, team manager Wellington Mpandare and all those behind the scenes, we say well done.

“We now need to get to the next stage of the tournament. The players are there, with good planning we can go far in the tournament,” said M’parutsa.

Shona Ferguson opens up on his Netflix show Kings of Jo’burg

Following his return to the small screen in the action-packed six-part series Kings of Jo’burg, the actor and businessman talks about wealth and being part of a Netflix African Series.

Q: Tell us about the show and your collab with Netflix?

We started developing the show about four years ago, and usually it doesn’t have a name yet at that stage. So, you come up with an idea based on a premise. I began with an idea that I wanted to develop a show called Kings of Jo’burg, and took it from there.

Pretty much every project our company had done had been female-centric – that was the latest craze on TV in South Africa. A lot of content is female-driven, but we needed to do something different. It’s a great direction, going back to something that people did in the past, something male-dominated for an audience mostly comprised of women who don’t want to watch guys beating each other up and chasing each other with guns. We wanted to tell a story to which everyone can relate.

I had to humanise guys who are usually considered macho, so I wrote it down as I saw it in my head. Then, I set up a meeting with a brilliant scriptwriter, Linda Bere, for a female perspective.

How is this character different from those you’ve played before?

SF: I’ve been typecast in similar roles for the past four years on The Queen, so people wouldn’t have expected me to play that character. I never expected to be in Kings of Jo’burg. It was when we were casting that the show’s director suggested I do something different, and that’s how I jumped into playing Simon “Vader” Masire.

How he’s different from other characters I’ve played is that he’s very greedy. I don’t think I’ve played a character before who’s so driven by power and control. He feels like he has power and is in control, but his greed has blinded him, and in his quest to acquire more power, fails to see that he loses more than he chases. it’s generational. I came from nothing. I grew up with nothing. It’s a pity that in this industry, people only know you by your name, not your story. Wealth isn’t money; it’s building a legacy for your children, so they don’t have to suffer the hardships you did. Beyond material possessions, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing are also forms of wealth. I don’t care how much money you have. When you’re in a position to create, you have to allow your heart, soul and spirit to learn.

‘Wealth isn’t money; it’s building a legacy for your children, so they don’t have to suffer the hardships you did’

How has that definition changed or evolved for you?

SF: Having kids was sort of the first thing that altered my perspective. As much as you want to provide for your children, you need to give them the tools to create for themselves. What’s been life-changing for me, and it literally changes every year, is that as long as I’m still intact, and have both hands and feet, then there isn’t anything I can’t accomplish.

Another thing that’s changed is that I’m hungry, and I work harder for inner peace and happiness than anything materialistic. What I’ve realised is that the more I focus on that, the more work I get. It’s like my whole being is open to the spirit of gratitude. That’s, in essence, what’s been happening: I’ve been chasing inner peace, which helps me to attract opportunities.

What can viewers expect from Kings of Jo’burg?

SF: I think they’ll be proud of how we represent the city of Joburg, not only that but the fact we created a show that also features Nigeria, South Africa and America. We hashtag the show using #Africaamericaconnect, and the idea is that, as a continent, we can create things the world can see and relate to. It doesn’t matter who you are or what part of the world you come from, everyone can relate to the idea of the family dynamic, being in a circle, surrounded by people who feed you, and that you in turn feed.

In South Africa especially, we’re all so desperate to attain Hollywood stardom. In doing so, we may compare ourselves with overseas creatives and feel like we’re not as talented. But South Africans are talented, and the rest of the world looks up to u

How do you handle criticism?

SF: One of the most valuable lessons my father taught me is that in life you need to understand that if you’re doing nothing, no one will pay attention to you. He would it say in Tswana, ‘Ntja ga e bogoele koloi ye e emeng’ (meaning, the dog doesn’t bark at the parked car). As human beings, we’re emotionally affected by criticism, but it’s about realising criticism means you’re moving, that the louder the criticism, the larger the magnitude of your movement. If someone thinks negatively of something, they’ll never see it in a positive light.

What I want people to take away from this is that they need to focus on their vision and what they want from it. They have to be like a horse in a race, focusing ahead so as not to be distracted by the other horses. That’s always been my approach. You cannot focus on or succeed at anything if you stop every time the going gets tough.

Another Chinese work storm as they fire 30 employees without notice. A Chinese mining company has reportedly dismissed all its underground workers without notice.

This has prompted the trade union which represents the workers, the National Union of Mines Quarrying, Iron and Steel Workers of Zimbabwe (NUMQISWZ), to threaten to take legal action against the company.

The company, Fools Investment Mine in Hope Fountain near Bulawayo, fired more than 30 employees, according to NUMQISWZ regional officer Abraham Kavalanjila. He said: Fools Mine unfairly dismissed all underground workers and we have since written to them.

The verbal response from management was that they maintain their stance. Very soon we will be taking them to court on unfair labour practices by the employer. Kavalanjila implored the government to put the company under judicial management, saying the mine has potential if managed well.

Kavalanjila said the outstanding salaries for the fired workers could be around US$300 000. The company is also accused of underpaying employees and failing to provide protective clothing.

At one point one of Fools Mine’s directors allegedly assaulted two employees over outstanding salaries.

Man sentenced to 400 years in prison after r@ping 10-year-old stepdaughter 1 000 times

Man sentenced to 400 years in prison after r@ping 10-year-old stepdaughter 1 000 times. The Verulam man was further given a 173-year prison sentence after being found guilty of 56 counts relating to r@pe, human trafficking, s.e.xual grooming, s.e.xual abuse and distribution of child p0rn0graphy.

A 46-year-old man, who r@ped his 10-year-old stepdaughter close to 1 000 times over five years, was sentenced to nine life terms in the Durban High Court on Friday.

The Sunday Times Daily reported that the man, an auto electrician by trade who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, had also deliberately laced his fingers with acid to burn off his fingerprints in an apparent attempt to prevent him being linked to other crimes.

He was arrested in June 2018 at his home in Verulam, north of Durban, after the child confided in a neighbour about the alleged abuses. The neighbour rallied a group of women who confronted the man when he returned home from work.

Private security company Reaction Unit SA (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said they were called in for assistance after a group of residents had discovered horrifying videos of the rap_es on the man’s mobile phone.

“His mobile phone was confiscated and several video recordings of rap_e were found. Recordings of other men and women engaged in s.e.xual activity with the child were also found in the memory card. Pictures of the accused using woman’s lingerie were also discovered on the phone.”

Dild0s and other s.e.x toys used to penetrate the girl during s.e.xual acts were also confiscated in the home.

During the trial, it was revealed the man had rap_ed his stepdaughter since the death of her mother in 2013 almost every second day at their residences in Benoni, Effingham, Pinetown, Reservoir Hills, Sydenham and other areas in Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal.

Judge Mohini Moodley found the accused guilty of all 56 charges and said he should be registered as a se_x offender and not be allowed near children.

Moodley said the stepfather had pr0stituted the child for financial gain and the investigating officer, Nevarge Lutchminarain of the Verulam family violence, child protection and se_xual offences unit, should pursue charges against all those who abused the child se_xually. Lutchminarain had previously detailed how the accused had issued threats to all those who he felt had contributed to his incarceration.

“I spoke to the applicant and he told me to pass on a message to the victim, specifically not to forget what he had promised her. When I spoke to her, she said the applicant had told her if she went to the police they would both be locked up and he would put her in the same place he put her mother,” he said.

TimesLIVE visited and reported in detail about the one-bedroom home where the man had kept the girl hostage for years. The home had one entrance with a bolted door and windows blacked out with newspaper. The rap_ist will serve his almost 400-year prison sentence at Durban’s Westville Correctional Centre.

Actress Simphiwe Ngema opens up on her near death experience

Simphiwe Ngema has opened up about her difficult pregnancy saying she almost lost her life. Pregnancy is a beautiful experience for many women but the dangers of it, takes the excitement out, to a certain extent.

The sleepless nights are sometimes caused by the uncomfortableness of their bulging bellies, but for almost every expectant mum, they are caused by fear which results in endless prayers.

These are the sentiments Simphiwe shares, and she reveals that she almost lost her life due to complications with her pregnancy. Simz also added that she had negative thoughts of losing her life but her family got her through it. She breathed a huge sigh of relief when her bouncing baby boy came to this world in July 2020.

It’s still so unbelievable that I carried a whole human being. I had the most difficult pregnancy ever! At some point I didn’t think we were gonna make it. I remember my dad saying, “They better get that baby out, before he kills my baby,” but God had us,” she shared.

Simphiwe Ngema opens up

In another post she revealed how emotional her parents got and how she and her mother cried their eyes out. “We cried so much. My mum was still crying in this pic. Mercy said No, I’m not gonna let you go.”

Simphiwe even opened up about her weight loss journey saying it has not been the most easiest of rides but she is taking it slowly, one sip of green tea a time. “Yes losing weight after pregnancy is difficult but when I look at my miracle baby, I am so grateful and I am reminded that God exists,” she wrote.

Simphiwe Ngema opens up

Simphiwe then added that she is a good person but has not had it very easy in life, I’m a good person but my life has been very difficult. I often ask God why, and he always says if it was easy it wouldn’t be worth it. Everything I have is worth it so much more because of how difficult it was to get it,” she shared.

It is safe to say that Simphiwe had the most shocking pregnancy reveals ever and she said it would not have been shocking, had the media dug deep enough.

During her sit-down interview with the Cent Twinz YouTube podcast, she suggested that the reason she managed to keep her pregnancy private was due to lazy journalism, considering that she did not stop living her life- she just did not post her pregnancy.

A form 6 student pays RTGS$7 000 fine for impregnating a juvenile. Thando Sengani (18) of Hlabano Village under Chief Chizungu in Mberengwa has been ordered to pay RTGS$7 000 or alternatively serve six months in jail after he impregnated an underage girl (14) who was only doing Grade 7.

Sengani faced charges of having extramarital s.e.xual intercourse with a female juvenile below the age of 16. The juvenile who was impregnated in 2020 gave birth through a caesarian and the baby died soon afterwards. The complainant was in Grade 7 in 2020 when the offence was committed.

In the said month, the accused proposed love to the juvenile and she agreed. During the same period, the complainant’s mother visited her husband in West Nicholson and left the complainant with her young brothers at home. The accused then visited the juvenile on several nights in April and May and they had s.e.x.

The matter came to light when the complainant’s mother came back in July 2020 and noticed that her daughter vomited every morning. The juvenile then disclosed that she was pregnant with the accused.

The complainant delivered a baby girl by cesarean on January 12, 2021, but the baby died. Matidaishe Pavazhira was for the State.

A new study reveals that men’s MANH00DS are shrinking

A new study reveals that men’s MANH00DS are shrinking. According to leading epidemiologist and environmental scientist Dr Shanna Swan, male penises are getting historically smaller and pollution is to blame.

If you’re a guy and didn’t care about pollution before today, you might wanna rethink that stance – because your MANH00D (and that of any future son’s) is seriously shrinking because of it and other forms of pollution.

Dr Shanna Swan, who is professor of environmental medicine and public health at NYC’s Mount Sinai Hospital, made the startling claims in her new book, Count Down: How Our Modern World Is Threatening Sp3rm Counts, Altering Male and Female Reproductive Development, and Imperilling the Future of the Human Race.

According to Dr Swan’s new book, humanity is facing an “existential crisis” due to phthalates, a chemical used in manufacturing plastics that impacts the hormone-producing endocrine system.

She cites different peer-reviewed studies in her findings, which say there’s a scary trend of modern-day babies being born with noticeably shorter members which she directly links to the phthalates she says are seeping into our toys and even some foods we eat.

Dr. Swan says the same effect was observed in rat fetuses exposed to phthalates … and now it’s being seen in humans as well – which she calls a crisis in the making.

This is part of a larger problem that has also been touched on elsewhere – the fact that men’s sperm count and viable sp3rm world-wide is plummeting. Dr Swan estimates that if this continues at the rate it’s at now … we’ll all be virtually impotent by 2045.

Boarding students barred from going home during Easter Holiday. The same restrictions apply to students who had travelled to urban or rural areas but are not boarders. Students will have to stay put and wait for the Easter holidays to pass before they resume lessons next week.

The government has directed that boarding students will not be allowed to travel home during the upcoming Easter holidays in a move meant to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Addressing a post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare this Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutswangwa said:

Cabinet agreed that boarding school students should not travel to their homes for the Easter holidays as part of the strategy to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The learners should stay at their respective schools, given the congestion anticipated on public transport.

Schools reopened for exam classes on 15 March and for the rest of the grades on 22 March resulting in a shortened school calendar. This year the Easter holiday starts on Friday, 2 April (Good Friday) and ends on ends 5 April (Easter Monday).

Meanwhile, Minister Mutsvangwa also said President Mnangagwa will make the necessary pronouncements to guide the nation during the Easter and Independence holidays.

RBZ simplifies rules for the 2021 tobacco marketing season

RBZ simplifies rules for the 2021 tobacco marketing season. The regulations cope with contractors who use off-shore loans or lines of credit to fund the buying of tobacco, with such funds being banked in separate accounts to avoid mixing with funds from other sources.

Simple and transparent rules have been put in place by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) for the 2021 tobacco marketing season to ensure merchants and farmers can retain or be paid 60 percent of their net revenue in foreign currency and 40 percent in local currency.

Contractors will need to have documentary proof of draw-down from offshore finance and receipt of the loan proceeds, a schedule of the inputs advanced to tobacco growers and a letter from the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) confirming the level of support by the contractor.

This comes as the TIMB last year introduced regulations for contractors to ensure the merchants act responsibly and accountable for their farmer support with everything set out transparently to eliminate disputes or confusion.

In a letter addressed to the TIMB, the RBZ outlined the tobacco marketing and payment arrangements for this season. Where tobacco merchants financed tobacco production using offshore loans and want to offset the amount against tobacco purchases, prior exchange control authority is needed, with only the cost price of direct inputs, excluding interests and mark ups, eligible for offsets.

The schedule of the inputs advanced to growers needs to include the name and prices of the inputs, a list of growers with their phone numbers and the number of hectares contracted, a letter from the TIMB confirming the level of support by the contractor.

All purchases of green leaf tobacco have to be financed using funds drawn-down from exchange control approved accounts or registered offshore lines of credit.

Growers, who must be paid 60 percent of the purchase price in foreign currency, will be helped by the RBZ allowing merchants to open the required special foreign currency accounts holding the money to pay the farmers with more than one bank.

To buy tobacco, merchants are expected to draw-down a specified amount from these tobacco buying transitory foreign currency accounts and sell 40 percent of the proceeds to the RBZ at the prevailing foreign exchange auction rate on the day of the transaction.

The remaining 60 percent shall be retained by the tobacco merchant to pay the tobacco growers 60 percent foreign currency entitlements through transfers to the growers’ foreign currency account.

“For tobacco that is purchased through the auction floors system, tobacco merchants shall put in place mechanisms to ensure that auction floors have the requisite foreign currency to expeditiously pay the tobacco growers 60 percent foreign currency entitlement.

Tobacco merchants who have failed to secure offshore lines of credit for buying tobacco from farmers shall apply to exchange control for authority to use locally sourced funds and proof of inability to secure off shorelines of credit would be required, including a supporting letter from the TIMB.

Meanwhile, TIMB has explained that it was not mandatory for stakeholders and staff working in the industry to get vaccinated. TIMB chief executive, Dr Andrew Matibiri on Monday said vaccination was voluntary.

“Stakeholders and staff are classified as frontline workers and can voluntarily get vaccinated for Covid-19 ahead of the opening of the marketing season on April 7,” he said.

1 million doses of Chinese vaccine arrive

1 million doses of Chinese vaccine arrive. Yesterday’s arrival completed the delivery of the 1,2 million doses commercial order, Zimbabwe’s first, with the initial 144 000 doses arriving last week and the other 1,056 million yesterday. Besides this commercial order, there are already in Zimbabwe two Chinese gifts totalling 400 000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine and the first batch of 35 000 doses of an Indian gift of Covaxin vaccine.

With the vaccine supply chain now assured with the arrival yesterday of more than a million doses of Sinovac vaccine, the bulk of Zimbabwe’s first commercial order, the Ministry of Health and Child Care is accelerating the national vaccination programme with satellite vaccination points in rural centres and mobile teams becoming active.

With 1,635 million doses having now arrived, and the Government ready to place more orders, the Health Ministry says its major job is now making sure the programme is speeded up.

Speaking at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport as the consignment was being unloaded, Health and Child Care Deputy Minister Dr John Mangwiro said: “This is a sign that we are moving forward and we are now going to up the speed of giving out the vaccine. This consignment will be followed by many other vaccines until we get to herd immunity. We know very well that the Ministry of Finance is ready to purchase more of these vaccines to make sure that all Zimbabweans are prevented and safe from this coronavirus,” he said.

The government is targeting to vaccinate 60 percent of the population to tame the infection rate among citizens. As of Monday, 69 751 people had been inoculated, which is a 60 percent jump from 43 295 people who had received the vaccine on Monday last week as the first steps to accelerate vaccinations took effect.

Asked how the vaccine sent to each vaccination point would be selected, Dr Mangwiro said the process would be basically random. While both doses given to each person need to be the same, people have to go back to the centre where they received the first jab, so this is easy to organise.

The three vaccines already in Zimbabwe are very similar and are inactivated vaccines that work by using dead viral particles to expose the body’s immune system to the virus without risking infection.

This prepares the body to produce antibodies that fight the live virus once it attacks. Since no living matter is injected, the vaccines are very safe and all follow the traditional route that tamed many other diseases.

Since they are so similar, Dr Mangwiro said there was no need for anyone to prefer one over the other but said that people could get a choice, basically by selecting the vaccination centre. But he recommended going to the nearest.

The Health Ministry already has a logistics system and infrastructure for vaccination of most childhood illnesses and will now be using more of this to distribute the Covid-19 vaccines and ensure they are readily available.

In rural areas they are already in the clinics but the programme will now be including business centres and other points, said Dr Mangwiro, as has been done in other vaccination programmes.

“These vaccination programmes are not new to us, we have been vaccinating children in all corners of the country and we have the infrastructure there. What we are doing is taking these vaccines to the same points because the storage and infrastructure that we have been using to vaccinate our children are the same infrastructure that we will use for the Covid-19 vaccinations,” he said.

There was no discrimination in the availability of the vaccine in urban and rural areas and having the satellite points would help to achieve the targeted vaccinations in a shorter timeframe.

The national vaccination programme last week entered into the second stage where teachers, those in the security service, hospitality industry, the clergy and others joined the frontline workers to receive their jabs. Dr Mangwiro said the vaccines were already available at all clinics in the rural areas.

“What we will do further is to increase the number of outlets so that we reach our (target) figures quickly. We will have fixed outlets so if there is a clinic, we might have another outlet at shopping centres to make sure that the people get their vaccines and we avoid long queues,” he said.

He said most rural clinics have refrigeration systems that can be used to store the Covid 19 vaccines.

“This is why we chose these vaccines because they use the same cold chain storage facility like the one we have with our other vaccines. From here, the vaccines will be taken to central stores where they will be kept until they are ready to be dispatched. We will distribute it under a cold chain so the temperatures must be maintained until the patient gets the shot,” said Dr Mangwiro.

The three inactive vaccines chosen all need to be kept refrigerated but not frozen, about the temperature of a cold drink. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade David Musabayana said at the airport that increasing the number of people receiving the vaccination would help boost the county’s tourism and trade.

COVID-19: Time to invest in traditional medicines

COVID-19: Time to invest in traditional medicines. In his virtual address at the Forum on Traditional Chinese Medicine and International Cooperation Against Covid-19 yesterday, President Mnangagwa said while the world is pinning its hopes on Covid-19 vaccines, it is imperative to broaden the scope to other areas such as traditional medicines.

Scientist must broaden collaboration in research and development of traditional medicines as part of global efforts to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic which has taken lives and disrupted livelihoods globally, President Mnangagwa said.

“While our hopes are pinned on the Covid-19 vaccination programmes, it is imperative that scientists broaden collaboration in research and development of traditional medicines. This will ensure safe development and deployment of our rich indigenous knowledge systems, to tackle the pandemic.

“In the case of Zimbabwe, notable strides are being made in research of the medicinal properties of indigenous plants, specifically Lippia Javanica (Zumbani), which is abundant in our country and parts of Southern Africa. Research and cooperation in this and other regards, is encouraged and most welcome,” the President said.

Collaborative efforts between the traditional and conventional medicines will contribute to the transformation of the medical provisions from volume-based to value-based health care, the President added.

The traditional medicine virtual forum was held under the theme “Deepen Exchanges and Mutual Learning of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Build a Global Community of Health for All”, a subject that the President said resonates with China’s continued global role in the health sector at a time when the world is grappling with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, who is also the Minister of Health and Child Care, Vice Premier of the State Council and Politburo member of the Communist Party of China Cde Sun Chunlan, Chinese Vice Minister and Secretary-General of Foreign Affairs Cde Luo Zhaohui were among other dignitaries who attended the meeting.

“One of the most pressing tasks for the international community, therefore, is to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. We must act together towards stabilising and reviving the global economy. This necessitates a stronger response anchored by closer solidarity and cooperation, as well as information sharing within the community of nations,” the President said.

He added that traditional health systems are part of the global heritage, which are treasured as a key component of culture in many societies. Last year the country opened the Zimbabwe-China Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Acupuncture Centre at the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare.

“In an effort to strengthen cooperation and development of traditional medicine, Zimbabwe and China signed a Memorandum of Understanding which has seen the establishment of Traditional Chinese Medicine clinic at one of my country’s largest referral hospitals.”

China, a strategic partner of Zimbabwe, with relations dating back to the liberation struggle, has played a leading role in assisting the country fight the Covid-19 pandemic through the provision of, not only sundries but also huge gifts of vaccines to help curb the spread of coronavirus.

“In the spirit of multilateralism, Zimbabwe remains committed to collaborate and cooperate with all, at the international level, in pursuit of the global ‘health for all agenda’. This is now more urgent given that Covid-19 has dealt an unprecedented setback to the global effort to end extreme poverty, unsustainable use of natural resources, conflict and climate change.

“Multilateralism is indeed our hope for ‘Humanity Way Forward’ and a quest to ensure that no one and no place is left behind,” the President said.

Having already vaccinated more than 60 percent of frontline workers in the initial phase of the vaccination programme, Zimbabwe is presently in its Phase Two of the Covid-19 vaccination programme which is targeting teachers, people with chronic conditions, the security sector among others.
