Ritual killing body stuck at mortuary

THE body of a mentally ill man from Gwanda who was beheaded in a suspected ritual murder three weeks ago, still lies unclaimed at Gwanda Provincial Hospital mortuary.

A post mortem was done on the remains in Bulawayo last week.

The victim, who was popularly known as Mduna in Colleen Bawn, was allegedly killed by Honest Moyo (22) of Mawane area in Garanyemba who went on to cut off the head and testicles.

Gwanda District Hospital medical superintendent Dr Pugy Chimberengwa yesterday referred questions to his office, saying he was not at work.

A doctor holding fort for Dr Chimberengwa identified as a Dr Dube professed ignorance about the matter.

“Why do you want to know that information? I don’t have it, we will have to look for it. Keep on trying but I can’t tell you what time I can give you the information because I am supposed to attend to patients at the time you want me to look for that information,” said Dr Dube.

However, a source at the hospital yesterday confirmed that the body was still lying unclaimed in the hospital’s mortuary.

“The body is still at the mortuary since its return from post mortem. No one has come to claim it and it’s likely that it will be accorded a pauper’s burial,” said the source.

Last week, Dr Chimberengwa confirmed that the body was in the mortuary and a post-mortem was done in Bulawayo but did not divulge the results citing ethical reasons.

The suspect, Moyo, is returning to court today for routine remand.

He was in court a fortnight ago for confirmation of his warned and cautioned statement but disowned it citing police harassment.

Gwanda magistrate Mr Obedience Matare was forced not confirm it, in terms of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act.

Allegations against Moyo are that on June 20, he found the now deceased Mduna near Colleen Bawn dumpsite.

He allegedly killed, decapitated him and cut off his testicles. The court heard how he buried the body in a shallow grave at the dumpsite.

He allegedly packed the head and the testicles in his bag and took them to his rural home in Mawane.

The matter came to light after his cousin, Mr Thandolwenkosi Ndlovu, discovered the head in a kitchen hut before bolting out and alerting other villagers.

The villagers apprehended and handed Moyo over to the police.

Moyo is facing another case of attempted murder in which he allegedly axed a fellow herd boy in an argument.

The matter did not go to trial since the complainant’s whereabouts are unknown and Moyo is off remand.

He came to court on the matter under Colleen Bawn CR 08/06/16

Widowed Mujuru says she won’t remarry

President Robert Mugabe’s former deputy Joice Mujuru says the southern African country’s strongman is not worried about factionalism in his ruling Zanu-PF party, as it helps him prolong his stay in power.

Mujuru, who served in the Mugabe administration since Zimbabwe’s attainment of independence from Britain in 1980, said that her former boss was a fan of “divide-and-rule” politics.

The ruling Zanu-PF party is currently divided into two distinct factions that are battling to succeed Mugabe, 93, when he eventually leaves office.

One camp calling itself “Team Lacoste” is led by one of Mugabe’s deputies, Emmerson Mnangagwa, while another cabal made up of Young Turks is pushing for First Lady Grace Mugabe’s ascendancy to the throne by torpedoing Mnangagwa’s ambitions.

However, both Mnangagwa and the First Lady have distanced themselves from the power dynamics saying they were all rallying behind the nonagenarian.

Mujuru, who was fired from both the Zimbabwean government and the country’s ruling party in 2014 for allegedly plotting to assassinate the veteran leader – a charge that she denies – said Mugabe thrived on the rifts within his party.

joice-solomon

“He (Mugabe) enjoys that (factionalism). He survives on people fighting each other in the party and that’s what keeps him going. He is the biggest beneficiary of the infighting in his party so he loves it so much,” said Mujuru.

For his part, Mugabe, who has embarked on nationwide rallies to drum up support ahead of next year’s general elections, has urged the warring Zanu-PF factions to put aside their differences and focus on the 2018 plebiscite.

“We hear that there are some senior party officials holding some meetings at night denouncing other party leaders. Why, why, why? Please stop factionalism; it is not good for our party. Every party member must be loyal to the party not individuals,” said Mugabe at his last rally in the ancient city of Masvingo.

Meanwhile, Mujuru accused Mugabe of lacking the political will to deal with corruption that has reportedly affected most arms of his administration.

He just talks about corruption but he doesn’t do anything to stop it,” said Mujuru.

“If I am elected president of this country, I will ensure that corruption is nipped in the bud within my first 100 days in office. Dealing with corruption is the first thing that we need to do if we are serious about fixing the economy.”

This came at a time the broader opposition was proposing to form a grand coalition that would field a single candidate for the presidential election in order to increase the opposition’s chances of dislodging Mugabe and his Zanu-PF party from power. Mugabe has been endorsed as his party’s presidential candidate.

Mujuru told News24 that she was hopeful Mugabe would be kicked out of office come next year.

“Our people have suffered long enough and we cannot afford another democratic miscarriage come 2018. The power of collective ability will prevail this time around.”

Political analyst Philani Zamchiya recently said that the current political dynamics in the opposition could result in a situation where two opposition coalitions around Mujuru and former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai would be formed.

“If two opposition coalitions emerge, it would give Mugabe an added advantage during the polls but as we draw closer to the polls, one of the opposition coalitions would capitulate,” said Zamchiya.

Mujuru, who now leads the National People’s Party, has also signed another agreement with the shadowy Zimbabweans United for Democracy (Zunde) party.

Mujuru said she was ready to lead the coalition if Zimbabweans across the political divide asked her to lead.

“I was the acting president (when Mugabe was away) more than any other vice president. But what we need is broader consensus so that we have a leader who can bring people together and be able to deal with the problems that are affecting ordinary Zimbabweans,” said Mujuru.

The former vice president, who lost her husband – the country most decorated soldier – Retired Army General Solomon Mujuru in a mysterious fire at Alamaine Farm in Beatrice in August 2011, said despite some Zimbabweans suggesting that she re-marries if she wanted to be president, she was not ready to get married again.

“I do not have a boyfriend and I am happy living as a widow.

Mugabe urges Zanu-PF to start preparing for 2018 polls

Zanu-PF should start preparing for next year’s harmonised elections and all party structures must unite ahead of the polls, President Mugabe has said.

This comes as the party’s Politburo yesterday reversed the recent removal of Charles Tawengwa as acting chairman of Harare province.

Tawengwa was removed by the Provincial Coordinating Committee on Sunday and was replaced by Justice Zvandasara.

Addressing journalists after the party’s 310th ordinary session of the Politburo in Harare yesterday, Zanu-PF Secretary for Administration Ignatius Chombo said the whole process was a nullity.

Chombo said in his opening remarks, President Mugabe said party members should be educated about the new Bio Metric Voter registration and the polling station based voting systems.

“Speaking about 2018 elections, the President stated that preparations should start now in earnest,” he said. “This he emphasised should start with the party being united and by organising its members to register as voters. Members need to be educated on the new Bio Metric Voter Registration and polling station based polling system.”

Commenting on the removal of Tawengwa Chombo said: “It was just by way of information that that exercise was a nullity and that (Cde) Zvandasara and team should vacate the premises as soon as possible. We want order in the party and we do not want lawlessness at all. All other provinces should be guided accordingly.”

Chombo said the President spoke highly about the bumper harvest that the country got this year as a result of good planning coupled with good rains.

He said President Mugabe said the country might consider exporting surplus maize.

Mugabe-rally

He informed members that the meeting was taking place against a background of a bumper maize harvest,” he said.

“This indeed is a marvel considering that the country was importing maize over a few seasons. A well planned agricultural season coupled with good rainfall has been the winning formula that the country has been looking for. The President then spoke on the need to make sure that the maize silos and other storage facilities were ready for the bumper harvest.

“He stated that while there was a need to create a grain reserve, the Government may need to consider selling excess maize to other countries. In the same light, there was a need to start planning now for the 2017-2018 agricultural season. His Excellency emphasised that timeous planning and preparation would lead to a successful 2017-2018 season yet again.”

Chombo continued: “Secretary for Youth League (Kudzanayi) Chipanga informed the Politburo that the next Presidential Youth Interface would take place on 21 July 2017 in Lupane, Matabeleland North province.  Preparations are now at a very advanced stage and come Friday the province will be ready to host this historic meeting. The Secretary for Administration Chombo reported that the $1 million donated by the President to the African Union was well received.

“This gesture has set an example for member countries of the AU that indeed Africans were capable of doing   things on their own without begging from the West.”

Chombo said National Commissar Kasukuwere gave a report on the recent Chiwundura by-elections where Zanu-PF candidate Brown Ndlovu won with 9 426 votes.

He said Kasukuwere informed the Politburo that preparations for the 17th National People’s Conference set for Gwanda were already underway.

“The commissar concluded his report by stating that Afrobarometer, a respected African pollster has predicted that if elections were held any time soon Zanu-PF will win. This he stated had sent tremors in the trenches of opposition political parties,” said Chombo.

He said Kasukuwere’s fate was still being attended to by the Presidium after he was rejected by nine provinces for plotting to topple President Mugabe, among other charges.

WITH the euphoria surrounding the impending visit of South Africa entertainer, Zodwa Wabantu, Club Connect, who will be hosting her, have introduced a competition – Dress and Dance like Zodwa where people will be expected to mimic the personality for a $300 prize.

The nightspot in Bulawayo will tomorrow hold Zodwa Wabantu’s pre-party in anticipation of Zodwa’s visit to the city next Saturday. During the party, a competition will be held with the lady who will dress and dance like Zodwa being given $300 and an opportunity to be Zodwa’s host in the club when she comes.

Revellers, especially females, are expected to wear the body hugging and thigh revealing outfits while imitating the Queen of Vosho on the dance floor.

While it is not clear whether the revellers vying for the prize will go all out as Zodwa who sometimes dances pantyless, organisers said they should bring their A game tomorrow.

Club Connect spokesperson Zandile Moyo said at the end of the day, they wanted to find Zimbabwe’s very own Zodwa Wabantu.

Ever since the news that Zodwa Wabantu will be at Club Connect started doing the rounds, a lot of interest from people across the country was generated.

This is why we decided to hype up her impending visit by having the Dance and dress like Zodwa Wabantu competition.

“It’ll also be nice to have females being confident in their own skin and coming out to have fun and who knows, we may just have a lot of Zodwa Wabantu’s from Zimbabwe,” said Moyo.

She said the winner will be judged by the crowd.

“It won’t take anything more than 40 minutes to find who takes the $300. The winner will be chosen by the crowd on the night.”

Zodwa Wabantu real name Zodwa Rebecca Libram rose to fame after videos of her suggestive dances at the Eyadini Lounge in Durban went viral. The mother of one also sent tongues wagging after she attended the Vodacom Durban July clad in a revealing dress with no underwear, something she said she did for the ladies.

Mugabe son-in-law joins political fray

PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe’s political dynasty seems to be growing with each passing day, amid claims that his son-in-law, Simba Chikore, is eyeing a parliamentary seat in Makoni North constituency, Manicaland province.

Chikore is married to Mugabe’s only daughter, Bona, and was early this year appointed as Air Zimbabwe chief operating officer.

“There is a lot of activity especially in and around his home area of Chikore,” a source who spoke on condition of anonymity said.

“Earthmoving equipment moved in two weeks ago and rehabilitated roads.

“Chikore has also sunk boreholes in the area, as he prepares for his campaign.”

Zanu-PF Manicaland provincial chairman, Samuel Undenge, was unavailable for comment yesterday, but the party’s provincial administration, Kenneth Saruchera dismissed Chikore’s alleged political manoeuvres as mere gossip.

“It’s just a rumour that is doing the rounds with no substance,” Saruchera said.

But senior party leaders, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed to NewsDay that Chikore was preparing to contest the seat in next year’s election on a Zanu-PF ticket.

“He is getting ready and the issue started when he was invited to attend the Manicaland youth interface rally addressed by the President,” one source said.

“His parents also uncharacteristically attended and you saw the First Lady (Grace Mugabe) asking Chikore to chant the Zanu-PF slogan. He is in.”

Local parliamentarian, Francis Muchenje confirmed that Chikore had funded some projects in the constituency, but argued “these are complementary efforts”.

bona-Simba-Chikore

It is true that he has funded the construction of boreholes and rehabilitation of roads, but like any other high-profile person, I think he is helping,” he said.

“We have some very senior leaders from Tanda, for example, who have funded development projects in the constituency.

“We do not feel threatened and I am not losing sleep over it.

“I view this as a complementary effort to what I do as an MP. I am actually planning to come back for next year’s elections and finish my projects.”

Muchenje said people in his constituency were happy to have Chikore “where he is”.

“We are happy to have such an influential person because it works to our advantage,” he said.

“Chief Chikore is the custodian of the borehole equipment and we were consulted together with all traditional leaders on the project.

“I do not think there is anything sinister about it. We will see what happens when the time for him to join politics comes.”

Chikore’s political entry comes as Mugabe’s step-son, Russell Goreraza, is reportedly eyeing the Marondera West seat in Mashonaland East, while Bona has been appointed to the Censorship Board, something critics claim is part of the Zanu-PF leader’s plan to establish a dynasty.

Grace has already been touted as a possible successor to her 93-year-old husband and is also tipped to represent Zanu-PF in the Harare South constituency.

With Zanu-PF leaders embroiled in a bitter power scrap to succeed Mugabe, insiders said Chikore presented a fresh frontier.

Despite popular thinking that se_x was meant for procreation Madungwe argued that great men in the Bible were not born through the popular method but were created.

He said he was not in a rush to have a relationship and does not have much in as far as issues involving women are concerned.

“Right now I am concentrating on ministerial work. All the other details will be revealed on the bachelor’s party. Age is catching up with me and I believe I will have someone when the time comes but as it stands I’m concentrating on the arrest of Satan”.

“It is clear I will get married and fall into the same mistake, but se_x was a mistake,” he said.

Man sjamboked his wife to Death over SMS from lover

A man from Bulawayo’s Cowdray Park suburb allegedly sjamboked his wife to death after he found text messages in her phone and suspected she was having an affair.

Thabani Mpofu, who is on the run, had a fight with his late wife Thembelani Ndlovu (29) on Wednesday night after he questioned her about a text message that he suspected was from her lover.

He allegedly left his wife’s body covered with a blanket, as if she was sleeping.

A family spokesperson, Ms Sithembinkosi Ncube said Mpofu went berserk after reading the message that came into his wife’s phone as he was using it. /”Yindaba ungaphenduli iphone?/ (Why are you not answering your phone?)” read the message.

“Mpofu demanded an explanation and accused his wife of having an affair. She denied the allegations,” said Ms Ncube.

“He went to his sister with the phone and texted the person who had sent the message pretending to be Ms Ndlovu and arranged to meet the person at his house.”

She said the man who sent the text showed up around 9PM. He saw Mpofu and fled.

“Mpofu pursued him but failed to catch him. He returned carrying the man’s shoe. Mpofu was livid. He mercilessly whipped his wife. I woke up and tried to call the neighbours,” said Ms Ncube.

The neighbours, Ms Ncube said, were afraid to intervene as Mpofu continued to beat his wife.

“I rushed to my uncle who lives in the same suburb but we could not locate Mpofu and MaNdlovu. Mpofu, we later found out, had dragged his wife into a nearby bush where he continued beating her. I went to sleep over at our uncle’s house,” narrated Ms Ncube.

murderer-Thabani-Mpofu

She said she returned with her uncle to the house yesterday morning, and found Ms Ndlovu lying dead on a mat on the floor.

Ncube said they tried to wake her up and realised she was dead.

“There was a dish filled with water, a bucket and a fire was lit by her bedside, showing that Mpofu may have tried to render first aid or perform a ritual before he fled from the scene,” she added.

“Her body was badly bruised and swollen. She is light in complexion. She had black, green and purple welts where he had lashed her with the sjambok. She must have endured a lot of pain.”

Ms Ncube said the family hoped police would arrest Mpofu soon as she feared he could come after her.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango said police were investigating the murder.

“I can confirm that a female was found dead in Cowdray Park suburb, after a fight with her husband and investigations are underway,” said Insp Simango.

She advised members of the public to desist from resorting to violence to solve arguments.

“People should seek mediation from trusted third parties like family or church elders. They can also approach the police victim friendly unit for help to reach an amicable solution rather than resorting to violence,” she said.

She said violence torments children and tears families apart among other far reaching social ills.

When a Chronicle news crew arrived at the house just before 1pm yesterday, the police had just taken away the body and the Homicide squad was still doing investigations in the house. A crowd that had gathered was dispersing.

Your hubby is good in bed – Girl (14) tells woman

A ZVISHAVANE woman was stunned when her husband’s 14-year-old girlfriend told her how good he was in bed.

The graphic narration shocked her and she alerted the juvenile’s parents, leading to the husband’s arrest.

Conwell Mutika (28), a taxi driver hired to take the Form Two pupil to school, had a se-xual relationship with the juvenile.

He had lied that he was single, little did he know she would surprise him with a visit to his home when his wife was around.

Sensing something fishy, the wife pretended to be Mutika’s aunt and the girl narrated their se-xual escapades.

14-year-old girlfriend

The wife then locked the girl inside the house and rushed to alert her father who then accompanied her to make a police report.

Mutika was arrested on charges of having se-xual intercourse with a minor.

The court heard that during the month of November 2016, Mutika proposed love to the girl and she accepted.

In May 2017, the girl attended a Seventh Day Adventist Conference and she arranged with the accused to come and pick her up.

He took her to his place and they had se-xual intercourse. On 9 June, Mutika told her to come to his place to collect her phone present and they had sex again.

Sometime in July, the complainant went to Mutika’s place intending to do laundry for him only to find his wife around.

The woman lied claiming to be Mutika’s aunt and the girl opened up about their affair leading to the man’s arrest.

Mutika pleaded not guilty citing that the girl had told him she was 17 years old.

He was remanded out of custody to 21 July.

THEIR earth shuttering dance moves have made them a sensation on social media, where videos of them shaking their thunder thighs have sent the tongues of many fans and followers wagging.

Over the past year, South African divas Babes Wodumo and Zodwa Wabantu have redefined how people view entertainment.

While Babes musical output is little, Zodwa has no music to her name and has been propelled to stardom simply by the power of her explosive dance moves.

Now they are coming to Bulawayo.

These two unconventional superstars will both descend on the City of Kings in the next few weeks.

First Zodwa Wabantu makes her debut appearance in Bulawayo with an appearance at Club Connect on 29 July as a  regular celebrity visitor. For a night, Bulawayo revellers will rub shoulders, or thighs, with the lady who has made such nightspots as Durban’s Eyadini the place to be just by her mere presence.

babes wodumoClub Connect spokesperson Zandile Moyo said that admirers would be given the chance to mix and mingle with Zodwa during a night that promises to be epic.

“Wherever she goes she is the life of the party and when she comes to Club Connect next Saturday it will be no different. This is a rare opportunity and followers who have admired her from videos on social media should take the opportunity to come and see her in the flesh,” said Moyo.

While Zodwa has chosen a club as the official venue for her Bulawayo visit, Babes will switch it up for her first appearance in the City of Kings as she will perform at the Large City Hall Car Park on 1 September.

Many had hoped that the West Ink signee would make her maiden appearance in Bulawayo at the Kalawa

Homecoming last year but she pulled out at the last minute alongside Big Nuz’s Mampintsha.

While the popularity of Wololo has fizzled, Babes is still hot property, something that the organisers of the gig are counting on.

“As 2Kings we want to provide the best in entertainment for the people of Zimbabwe and booking Babes Wodumo is in line with that thinking. In addition to her we will have Soul Jah and other performers we’re yet to announce,” said Terminator Makoni of 2Kings entertainment.

Twin prophets vanish with man’s lobola money

A Bulawayo man lost his entire lobola money to two self-proclaimed prophets whom he engaged to bless the money before approaching his in-laws who had demanded it following the death of his wife.

Talent Shava (34) and his twin brother Tinashe, both of Bulawayo’s Magwegwe suburb allegedly duped Mr Cephas Madzinga (67) of $659 last month in Old Pumula suburb during a prayer session in a bush in Old Pumula suburb.

While in the bush, the twins asked Mr Madzinga to hand over the money to them so that they could “bless” it and he complied.

Mr Madzinga was asked to kneel down and face the opposite direction. The “prophets” told him that that the two of them were going to pray going one direction and asked him to pray going the opposite direction, only for them to take to their heels with his money.

When Mr Madzinga opened his eyes after his prayer, he found the prophets gone.

Talent has since been arrested, but his twin brother is on the run.

He was yesterday convicted on his own plea and sentenced to 18 months in jail by Western Commonage magistrate Mr Lungile Ncube.

“Considering that you are a first time offender, I will sentence you to 18 months imprisonment. Three months will be suspended on condition that you do not within the next five years commit a similar crime,” said Mr Ncube.

The other six months were suspended on condition Talent pays back the stolen money on or before September 30 while the remaining nine months were suspended on condition he does 315 hours community service at Magwegwe Primary school starting on Monday.
