Zim teenager Tivonge Rushesha named Swansea Under-23 captain. Rushesha, a Wales Under-19 international, was born in Zimbabwe but moved to Britain as a youngster and has come through Swansea’s academy to be on the edges of the English Championship side’s first team.

Last week Tivonge Rushesha captained the under-23s for a second consecutive game in a 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic in Dartford. Wales-based Zimbabwean teen starlet Tivonge Rushesha has been appointed captain of Swansea Under-23 captain.

The 19-year-old, who usually plays at right-back, has also recently been operating as a central defender as opposed to his regular role. In an interview with Swansea’s official website, Rushesha expressed his delight over the latest development. He said:

I’ve enjoyed playing at centre back, I enjoy the middle of the pitch because I get a lot of the ball there and I think the way I play on the ball suits me.

I’ve been enjoying just how much of the ball I’ve been seeing, and I’ve just been taking on the challenge as I go. I think I’ve always been a good communicator, I think I’ve always led the team even when I’m not wearing the captain’s armband, so it’s good to see that the coaches have noticed that and it’s been great to wear it for the last two games.

Rushesha recently returned to competitive football after enduring eight months on the sidelines because of a ligament injury. He made his senior debut for Swansea in the EFL Cup last season and is highly regarded at the Liberty Stadium.

His hopes of a breakthrough season after being promoted to the first team however suffered a blow after suffering a serious injury. Early this year, he was offered a new contract that will keep him with the club until at least the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

Although Rushesha has played youth football with Wales’ national age-group teams, he has previously declared his desire to be part of the Warriors in the future.

Singer Greatman in verbal warfare with events planner over unpaid wedding debt. Greatman wedded Silibaziso Masara barely two weeks ago at an event that was dubbed the wedding of the year. The musician accuses TEO Events of dishonesty in handling donated funds and goods. Speaking during an interview with the Sunday Mail, Greatman claims TEO Events completely took over the event and monopolized everything.

A dispute has emerged between Greatman (Tongai Gwaze) a Zimbabwean musician and TEO Events over the former’s failure to pay US$2 500 for services provided at his wedding.  He said:

They monopolized everything! TEO directed all cash donations to their bank accounts and mobile numbers for mobile money transfers. Goods were received on our behalf. We got nothing.

What is surprising though is that there are service providers that are yet to be paid. I am said to be in arrears of more than US$2 500. However, I know cash donations that came through on the day and before could have easily settled the debts.

TEO has failed to provide a financial statement or receipts showing how funds were used. Up to now, I don’t even know how much money we got from various people, including pledges and goods. We have been kept in the dark.

Meanwhile, Matthew Mhembere of TEO Events said Greatman and his family were being ungrateful. He argued that it was not his responsibility to meet their debts. He said:

They now want to ask how much money we got from donations and pledges, yet they don’t even care about the expenses I incurred in making the event a success. Besides, it is not my responsibility to meet their debts.

Mhembere said he doesn’t know what else they want from him since he settled all the wedding costs that came under him. He added that he doesn’t want to talk to Greatman and his family again.

Russian anti-submarine destroyer chased off a US submarine. A Russian anti-submarine destroyer chased off a US submarine near the Kuril Islands to force it to leave the country’s territorial waters, Moscow said Saturday, amid raging tensions over Ukraine.

During planned military drills the Marshal Shaposhnikov destroyer detected a US Navy Virginia class submarine in Russian territorial waters near the Kuril Islands in the Pacific, the defence ministry said.

When the submarine ignored demands to surface, the crew of the frigate “used appropriate means” and the US submarine left at full speed, the ministry said without providing further details.

The ministry also said it had summoned the US defence attache in Moscow over the incident. The defence ministry said:

In connection with the violation by the US Navy submarine of the state border of the Russian Federation, the defence attache at the US embassy in Moscow was summoned to the Russian defence ministry.

The incident came amid soaring tensions between Russia and the West that have seen Moscow surround Ukraine with more than 100 000 troops, with Washington warning that an all-out invasion could begin “any day.”

Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Saturday condemned the claims as a “provocation”.

5 United Nations employees kidnapped in Southern Yemen

5 United Nations employees kidnapped in Southern Yemen. Five United Nations employees have been abducted by unknown armed men in southern Yemen while returning to Aden after a field mission.

The staff were abducted on Friday in the Abyan governorate, according to Russell Geekie, a spokesman for the top UN official in Yemen. Geekie said on Saturday:

The United Nations is in close contact with the authorities to secure their release. An official at the UN office in Aden told Reuters news agency and the Associated Press that four of those abducted were Yemeni nationals.

Yemen’s internationally recognised government, which is based in south Yemen, told state media on Saturday it was working to safely free the workers with the UN Department of Security.

The secessionist Southern Transitional Council, which controls much of Yemen’s south and is at odds with the Yemeni government, condemned the abductions as a “terrorist operation”, according to AP.

Abductions are frequent in Yemen, where armed tribesmen and al-Qaeda-linked armed fighters take hostages to swap for prisoners or cash.

Yemen has been mired in violence since the Iran-aligned Houthi movement overthrew the government from the capital, Sanaa, in late 2014, prompting a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia to intervene months later.

Al-Qaeda and the ISIL (ISIS) armed group have, in the past, carried out attacks including in the south, which last year saw protests over deteriorating economic conditions.

The war in Yemen has killed tens of thousands of people and caused a dire humanitarian crisis, with 80 per cent of Yemen’s population reliant on aid.

32-year-old man impregnates daughter. The matter came to light when the teenager girl got pregnant. The man (32) appeared before Plumtree regional magistrate Mrs Sithembiso Ndebele who found him guilty but the matter was postponed for sentencing.

A MAN from Plumtree in Matabeleland South province has been arrested after he sneaked into his brother’s daughter’s bedroom and raped her before dozing off.

Prosecuting, Mr Willbrought Kennedy Muleya told the court that sometime in October last year, at around 10pm, the man from Tshemahali Village under Chief Masendu, Madlambuzi sneaked into the girl’s bedroom hut where she was sleeping with her younger sister.

At first he offered the girl R50 so that he could sleep with her but she refused and ordered him to get out of the blankets and house. The court heard that however, the man refused to go out and pretended to be asleep.

When he discovered that the teenager and her sister had fallen asleep, he raped the girl without protection.

The court heard that afterwards he dozed off and only woke up the next morning. The girl narrated what happened to her grandmother (accused’s mother) the next morning but she also did not report the case to police or anyone.

The court heard that on 21 December 2021, police in Madlambuzi received a tip-off from an official from Social Welfare to the effect that the 16-year-old girl was s.e.xually abused by her uncle and the investigation began but unfortunately they failed to locate the girl until on 4 January when they found her pregnant. She told the police what had happened leading to the arrest of the uncle.

All set for Form 1 opening

All set for Form 1 opening. All is set for the opening of schools for Form One learners today, with most of the boarders travelling to their schools yesterday, while most of the teachers are now at their work stations.

This means all classes, except Lower Sixth learners, have now successfully opened since January 4, when examination classes went to finish off their exams from last year. They were then followed by the rest of classes on February 7, except Form Ones.

Yesterday, it was a hive of activity in most parts of the country as parents and guardians were either buying outstanding uniforms or driving their children to boarding schools.

Other learners used public transport to get to their schools. National Association of Secondary School Heads president Mr Arthur Maphosa said schools were ready to receive Form One learners, with some having already checked in. “We are ready for the Form One students.

“We are already in motion with some of the students already at the school premises. The Covid-19 protocols are being followed, everything is going perfectly,” he said. Mr Maphosa added that teachers were back at work and were welcoming the learners.

Zimbabwe National School Heads Union secretary general Mr Muyanradzi Majoni said school heads had started receiving the Form Ones.

“Students are already in schools, those in boarding schools are in, day students will be showing up tomorrow (today). “The only problem is that some of the teachers are not yet in, which is giving pressure to some of the school heads,” he said.

More and more teachers are expected to report for work after Government reviewed their working conditions last week.

On Friday last week, the National Joint Negotiation Committee (NJNC) met in Harare and agreed on the US$175 component to be paid to civil servants on top of their salaries paid in local currency.

Of the forex component, US$75 would be a continuation of the Covid-19 allowance while US$100 would come from the existing Zimbabwe dollar salary.

Further, all civil servants were awarded a 20 percent review on gross payments backdated to January 1, this year to be paid on the February pay date.

Other benefits include a housing loan guarantee scheme for home ownership, duty-free importation of vehicles, payment of $20 000 maximum in school fees for up to three 3 biological children per term, per child of a teaching family, and provision of a special once-off transport facility to ferry teachers in both rural and urban areas.

Yesterday, companies and individuals that sell school uniforms and accessories yesterday said they recorded brisk business this year compared to last year.

Mr Admire Kavhura, who sells school trunks, said: “This year, business is much than the past few years. Covid-19 was making things hard especially for us who sell the school-related products.”

Mrs Roleen Mhonyera, a uniform tailor, said since the opening of schools, business did not slow down, with the opening of Form Ones making them even busier.

“Form Ones give a lot of business for us because at this stage, parents buy uniforms from scratch,” she said.

ZRP descend on card cloners

ZRP descend on card cloners. Authurton Moyo (29) of 9262 Manyame Park, Chitungwiza and Samuel Puzumadu (34) of 1581 Unit A, Seke in Chitungwiza allegedly swindled Tarisai Nago (46) of $34 000, Esau Mataruse (52) of $39 186 and Raymond Muchapo (26) of $132 580.

Two suspected fraudsters believed to be part of a syndicate of criminals that swindled people of thousands of dollars through card cloning in Harare have been arrested.

Police recovered a Magnetic strip reader (MSRX6 machine) and a Lenovo G570 laptop, which the suspects were allegedly using to clone bank cards for their victims.

While the public should always exercise due diligence whenever they are transacting, there are some identified criminal syndicates and individuals who mill around busy market places in a bid to further their criminal enterprises, police said.

These places have been identified as OK Kuwadzana, N.Richards in Tynwald, N. Richards in Msasa, OK Mart along Chiremba Road, Bon Marche in Pendennis, Mt Pleasant, OK Queensdale and the Food Court along Simon Mazorodze Road opposite ZBC Mbare Studios.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest. He said on the first count, which occurred on November 1, 2021 at around 10am, the accused persons cloned Nago’s NMB bank card and debited $34 000.

On December 7, 2021, at around 1650 hours, the suspects cloned Mataruse’s Agribank bank card and debited $39 186,77.

“On Count 3, which occurred on December 1, 2021 at around 1300 hours the accused persons cloned the complainant’s (Muchapo’s) FBC Bank card and debited $132 580.

“On January 4, 2022 at around 1030am detectives from the CID Cloning Unit who were on surveillance arrested the two, searched their motor vehicle a Toyota Lexus registration number ACT 4859 and recovered a Magnetic strip reader (MSRX6 machine) and Lenovo G570 laptop,” he said.

The suspects have since appeared in court and their cases are pending. Asst Comm Nyathi said the method of operation by some of the criminals was that they act in connivance with cashiers at some of the fast food outlets, service stations, liquor outlets and supermarkets.

They then use skimming devices which extract information contained on the magnetic strip of a debit/credit card.

The criminals also access confidential card information such as card number, expiry date and PIN numbers through shoulder surfing (peeping over the shoulder during transactions as individuals pay) while others produce duplicate credit cards, which will be used to transact purchasing goods and services, among others.

Police recently advised citizens to be wary of a syndicate of criminals that was swindling people through card cloning. Several businesses and individuals have lost thousands of dollars through such activities.

Criminals are taking advantage of the uptake of plastic money by business organisations and members of the public to swindle money through card cloning.

Card cloning involves the production of counterfeit bank debit cards by criminals after fraudulently acquiring bank debit/credit card information contained in the magnetic strip of the bank debit card.

Criminals were acquiring bank debit card information through gadgets known as skimmers. These scammers are able to extract debit card information and the said devices are similar to point of sale machines.

RBZ injected US$70m under the foreign exchange auction in January alone

RBZ injected US$70m under the foreign exchange auction in January alone. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)in January allocated approximately US$70 million to companies through the foreign currency auction system, with 60 percent of the funds channelled towards importation of raw materials to boost local production.

The foreign currency auction resumed for the year mid-January. In a statement yesterday, RBZ Governor Dr John Mangudya said 576 beneficiaries were allocated US$58 301 775 under the main foreign exchange auction while 1 022 entities were allocated US$11 340 273 under the SMEs foreign exchange auction.

“The bulk of the funds allotted at the auctions during the month (68 percent) went towards payment for raw materials (US$28 688 860) and machinery and equipment (US$18846 575), with the remaining 32 percent of the total allotments going towards payment for consumables (US$6 436 011), services (US$5 823 657), retail and distribution (US$4 554 772), pharmaceuticals (US$3 776 634) and packaging (US$1 465 287),” he said.

The RBZ has disbursed US$2 666 022 861 since the auction began in 2020, in a development that has contributed towards stabilising inflation and ensuring increased local production of goods.

However, there have been challenges pertaining to disbursements of the allotted funds. Yesterday, Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries chief executive officer, Ms Sekai Kuvarika, said it was imperative that money be disbursed timely to ensure companies continue to operate unhindered.

“The desirable situation is where the auction gets up-to-date with payments,” she said. “As things stand, it is not (up-to-date). We have companies with bids from as far back as November 2021 still not paid.

“It is important that the amount availed for bidding considers retiring this backlog so the market can run as a proper Dutch auction that is making available amounts known and auctioning only that amount and settling the bids in two days as was the case when the auction started.”

Last month, the RBZ met industry players where they resolved to develop strategies to enhance the attractiveness of the local currency and strengthen its demand in the context of the multicurrency system currently in place.

In addition, the RBZ encouraged everyone to exhibit good leadership and exercise restraint on the volatility of the foreign exchange rate while relevant authorities were urged to monitor use of funds obtained through the auction and punish those who submit fake documents.

Other resolutions include continued efforts by the RBZ to refine the foreign exchange auction system and to timely fund auction allotments in line with the auction rules.

The bank was also urged to continue fighting inflation through restrictive monetary policy and building foreign exchange reserves as a way of augmenting the defence of the value of the local currency.

New broadcasting chapter dawns as another community radio commissioned

New broadcasting chapter dawns as another community radio commissioned. Zimbabwe has opened up the airwaves by licensing community radio stations and commercial television companies, as it fulfils the promise of broadening access to information for the benefit of citizens.

A new community radio station, Avuxeni FM, was commissioned in Chiredzi yesterday by Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Monica Mutsvangwa, who indicated that Zimbabwe is on course to a new exciting era in information access and dissemination under the Second Republic.

The licensing of community radio stations, said Minister Mutsvangwa, is aimed at narrowing the urban-rural divide in accessing information.

Minister Mutsvangwa was speaking in Chiredzi where she first commissioned Avuxeni FM community radio before presiding over World Radio Day commemorations at Tshovani Stadium.

Minister Mutsvangwa said President Mnangagwa’s administration fully supports media diversity, saying the nation was on the cusp of a new era in the sphere of information dissemination and access.

Addressing the media after officially opening Avuxeni FM, where she toured the studio and briefly went on air to mark the new milestone, Minister Mutsvangwa said the opening of the Chiredzi-based community radio station was a harbinger for exciting times ahead.

She said the opening of community radio stations in remote parts of the country was in fulfilment of President Mnangagwa’s declaration that “no place and no-one should be left behind” as Zimbabwe gravitates towards an upper middle income economy by 2030.

“We have been working under the Second Republic to make sure that we develop our country and this is exactly what the President of the country, His Excellency Dr ED Mnangagwa, has been working hard for, so that no-one and no place is left behind,” she said.

“We are saying information should reach all corners of Zimbabwe in real time, be it information about disasters or other things happening in the country.

“We will continue to allocate more resources to improve transmission in remote areas so that all our people can access radio and television services.”

Minister Mutsvangwa said community radios play a key role in promotion of local languages and traditional values.

Government deliberately issued community radio licences to remote parts of the country where minority languages are dominant to give communities there an opportunity to tell their own stories and contribute to development of their areas through access to information.

Minister Mutsvangwa said: “We are ready to fly and the challenge is now on, for other community radio stations in other parts of the country that were licensed to also start operating now that we have the first one (Avuxeni FM) that has now gone on air.”

She challenged traditional leaders and other societal leaders to take advantage of the advent of community radios to spearhead development in their communities.

Further, Minister Mutsvangwa said community radios were incubation centres for talent, and young journalists would use them to hone their skills before going out to conquer the world.

Community radios stations are also sources of content for national broadcasting companies as they will be sources of news that take place in grassroots areas.

Minister Mutsvangwa later on joined a procession from Avuxeni FM premises in the town centre to Tshovani Stadium where thousands of people converged to celebrate World Radio Day.

At the stadium, she toured various stands where companies with a bias towards radio and television broadcasting were exhibiting.Avuxeni FM presenters

Among the companies was Zimpapers Radio, ZBC, Transmedia, Great Zimbabwe University, Hevoi FM, and the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe.

In her address, Minister Mutsvangwa said the Second Republic under President Mnangagwa deserved to be commended for moving with speed to promote diversity and plurality in radio and television broadcasting.

She said out of the six commercial television broadcasting stations so far licensed, one of the stations would soon go on air, marking a milestone in the history of broadcasting in Zimbabwe.

Minister Mutsvangwa said days where only ZBC used to dominate in the television broadcasting arena would soon be over with the coming of new players to create competition.

“Competition is coming and no one and no place will be left behind and this shows that President Mnangagwa is serious about developing this country into an upper middle income economy.”

However, she cautioned on the need to make sure that radios and televisions were not abused, warning that recklessly disseminating information can harm and destroy societies or nations.

She rallied Zimbabweans not to allow differences in opinion to divide them, saying in the event of differences, dialogue was always the best foot forward.

Present at the celebrations were various organisations and bodies with an interest in media, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister Kindness Paradza and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry Mr Nick Mangwana.

Judges receive ICT skills

Judges receive ICT skills. Those that received the certificates are Justices Joseph Mafusire, Elijah Makomo, Priscilla Munangati, Cathrine Bachi-Mzawazi, Samuel Deme and Lucie-Anne Mungwari.

Government has ensured the modernisation of the justice delivery system by offering ICT training to judges from superior courts. The training ended on Friday last week, with six judges receiving certificates of competency.

Speaking during the judges’ ICT training workshop in Harare on Friday, Information Communication Technology0, Postal and Courier Services Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere said the skills obtained by the judges will not only modernise the justice delivery system, but also reduce the duration of litigation and attendant costs.

“This will be achieved through the implementation of the Integrated Electronic Case Management System whose features, we are told, include virtual courts and an e-filing system among others,” he said.

Dr Muswere said the e-skills training for judges was an important investment in human capital development by the Government.

“It must be noted that while we can embrace various new technologies, such technologies risk becoming redundant if we do not have consummate human resources to interface and utilise that new technology. No nation can attain progress if it does not first implement human capital development initiatives,” he said.

President Mnangagwa has identified a digital economy as one of the key pillars for the achievement of Vision 2030 of an empowered upper middle income society. The President has mandated the Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier Services to ensure Zimbabwe was part of the digital age and to make sure no-one was left behind, said Dr Muswere.

He expressed confidence that as the Government rolls out similar training initiatives for Zimbabweans from all walks of life, President Mnangagwa’s vision for the creation of a digital economy in pursuit of Vision 2030 would be quickly attained.

Black Rhinos, CAPS Utd play to a 1-all draw

Black Rhinos, CAPS Utd play to a 1-all draw. On a day in which Bulawayo Chiefs shocked champions FC Platinum 2-0 at Luveve yesterday, Makepekepe opened the scoring through William Manondo in the first minute while Allan Gahadzikwa equalised for Rhinos late in the second half.

CAPS United staged a commendable show despite conceding late in the second half in this exciting Castle Lager Premiership football match at Sakubva yesterday. The Green Machine were largely expected to falter in this tie, given they trained for only eight days in preparation for this game as their players were demanding outstanding salaries they are owed.

But once they marched into the pitch yesterday, their body language expressed the exact opposite. They were hungrier and fought for every ball and dominated play in the first half.

With eight changes to the team which last played their last league match in December, Makepekepe always looked threatening both on paper and on the pitch.

With the returning Devon Chafa controlling the midfield, Dennis Dauda and Lincoln Mangaira marshalling defence and Manondo as well as Clive Augusto upfront, the Lloyd Chitembwe-coached charges looked very much well-oiled.

It didn’t take long for the Green Machine to show they meant business with Dauda’s lofted pass finding Phenias Bamusi on the flank. The pacey winger worked his way past a cluster of startled Black Rhinos defenders before drawing back from the by-line.

Manondo was well positioned to tap in the opener and suddenly the match opened up. Desperate to peg back the Harare giants, Black Rhinos awakened and launched sustained attacks on the Green Machine.

On three occasions, Herbert “Jompano’’ Maruwa’s charges could have found an equaliser but the jittery yet talented Denzel Mutudza fluffed off all the chances which came to him in quick succession.

For longer periods of the second half in which Maruwa had introduced three substitutes, Ngandu Mangala, Vincent Mhandu and Joe Nyabinde, as he pressed for goal, Black Rhinos pitched tent inside the Makepekepe half.

And the army team should have equalised but Mhandu somehow failed to direct two efforts from inside the box despite finding himself unattended. With time running out, CAPS United switched on an ultra-defensive mode and it seemed to work until the experienced Allan Gahadzikwa came on for the tiring Christopher Brighton.

The 2010 Soccer Star of the Year runner-up Gahadzikwa latched onto a rebound after Mhandu’s effort was blocked, and there was no chance for CAPS United goalkeeper Simba Chinani.

Chitembwe felt his charges should have won this match but expressed satisfaction over the way the players applied themselves.

“My boys worked their socks off and that was gallant of them. To get a point after what has been happening over recent weeks is something commendable,” said Chitembwe.

“I am very happy with how my boys played. We controlled the first half and we may have scored more if we were lucky but such is football.

“I am happy with how we played.”

Caps Sakubva

CAPS United, who could have won the match right at the death had Augusto directed his effort well after rounding off Rhinos goalie Stanley Chapeta, have now taken their points tally to three in as many matches. Rhinos are now on five points after playing the same number of games.

Black Rhinos: Stanley Chakwana, Farai Banda, Collen Kwaramba, Gareth Madhake, Peace Makaha(Keith Madera 71 min), Ashward Phiri, Gracious Muleya (Joe Nyabinde 47 min) , Brighton Christopher (Allan Gahadzikwa 67 min) , Denzel Mutudza(Vincent Mhandu 47 min), Stanley Murove(Ngandu Mangala 40 min) , Tawanda Nyamandwe

Bulawayo Chiefs shock reigning champions FC Platinum with a 2 – 0 defeat

Bulawayo Chiefs shock reigning champions FC Platinum with a 2 – 0 defeat. BULAWAYO Chiefs coach Nilton Terroso yesterday played down his impressive win over reigning champions FC Platinum in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match, saying they are yet to reach their best and are still work in progress.

Goals on either side of the break by Mthokozisi Msebe and a penalty by Obrey Chirinda condemned the platinum miners to their first defeat of the season, while ensuring Chiefs continue with their perfect start to the campaign.

An impressive attacking midfielder, Msebe, thrust Chiefs ahead with a beautiful header into the top corner of the net, beating national team goalkeeper Petros Mhari in the sixth minute.

Msebe was recipient of a quality cross from the left by Perfect Chikwende. The build-up to the Chiefs’ goal was exquisite, with the players’ movement off the ball impressive that they confused FC Platinum.

It was a reality check for their coach Norman Mapeza, who was sent to the terraces in the first-half for unnecessarily remonstrating against the referee.

The task that now lies ahead for the champions, who lost several senior players, could be a headache for Mapeza.

Mapeza was reminded of the importance of experience after his former players Kelvin Madzongwe, Kelvin Moyo, Elvis Moyo, Ian Nekati and Perfect Chikwende inspired Chiefs to this important victory.

However, Chiefs’ gaffer Terroso is not reading much into the giant-killing act. “I’m not convinced with the win. We are still building the team,” Terroso said after the match.

Mapeza, on the other hand, felt he didn’t deserve to be sent off. “Red-card was uncalled for. I wasn’t even talking to the referee. I was asking Mhari why he didn’t clear the ball,” Mapeza said.

“But on a positive, we have youngsters; we are building a team.”

FC Platinum could have opened the scores with their first attack from kick-off, but were denied by the timely intervention by Bulawayo Chiefs defender Marlvin Mkolo in the first minute.

Instead, it was Chiefs, who broke the deadlock in the sixth minute when Msebe headed home Chikwende’s cross.

The major highlight of the first-half, however, was the sending off of Mapeza in the 34th minute after confronting the assistant referee Salani Ncube, who had flagged a foul by an outdrawn FC Platinum goalkeeper Mhari.

Mhari was lucky to avoid a sending off, as FC Platinum players briefly lost their cool and replicated their coach’s antics in remonstrating against the referee.

Teams

Bulawayo Chiefs: David Bizabani, Ian Nekati, Elvis Moyo, Kelvin Madzongwe, Hughe Chikosa (Wilson Mensah 72nd min), Lucky Ndlela, Obriel Chirinda (Billy Veremu 72nd min), Malvin Mkolo, Mthokozisi Msebe (Sipho Ndlovu 65th min) Kevin Moyo, Perfect Chikwende

FC Platinum: Petros Mhari, Gift Mbweti, William Stima, Gift Bello, Kelvin Mangiza, Ransome Pavari, Hagiazo Magaya (Walter Musona 57th min), Brian Banda, Panashe Mutimbanyoka, Oscar Bhebhe (Donald Teguru 69th min), Thando Ngwenya (Abbubaka Onifadeh 80th min).

Zim truck driver robbed and dies in Zambia

Zim truck driver robbed and dies in Zambia. There are reports Alois Ncube, 50, also attempted to commit suicide, after hijackers pounced on him, in an attempt to steal the copper he was transporting. Ncube was on his way from the DRC when the incident occurred.

An Epworth family of a Zimbabwean truck driver, who died in the Chambishi area of Zambia after his truck was allegedly hijacked, is pleading with authorities to establish what actually led to his death.

He was employed by Whelson Transport for 15 years. Ncube died at the Kitwe Teaching Hospital (KTH) after he was admitted under police guard.

The incident has since been reported in Zambian media but the family wants to know the circumstances which led to his death. The family members were barred from entering the late driver’s work premises.

Efforts to get a comment from officials at Whelson Transport were not successful. “Wait outside, no one is allowed inside,” said an official, who was manning the gates, at the premises.

The late driver’s son, Norman, said they simply wanted some answers to help them understand events surrounding the tragedy. “We have been advised that the body will be in Zimbabwe on Tuesday, after we insisted on knowing where his body was,” he said.

“So, we will wait until Tuesday but we want to know what exactly happened. We were told he was robbed in Zambia, while he was transporting copper. They only told us that our father was robbed and we approached the authorities who told us he was taken to hospital, under police guard, since he was also under investigation.”

He said there were too many questions which needed answers. “What is surprising us is that the trucks have video trackers, but they don’t want to show us the videos,” said Norman.

“The drivers travel in a convoy and they were three on the day in question. Some of the drivers are saying my father stopped in the Chambishi area and if you stop for five minutes, they (officials at the office) call you. But, this time, the truck was driven off-road but no tracker showed anything.

“Then, the other drivers tried to track him until they got to a bushy area and, upon their arrival, the hijackers fled from the scene.

“It is said, my father was part of the syndicate, he was found on the road attempting to commit suicide. My father has left a big family.

“We appreciate that the company has been coming to keep us informed but the information we want is not being provided. “We are just in darkness, we are not familiar with the law; we might think we are doing it properly yet tichitadza.” An audio recording appears to shed some light on the incident.

“We were told that his truck had stopped for an hour at Chambishi, before the company informed other drivers to go and check since they had assumed he was having problems. “When they went back, the truck had changed route. They found the truck parked and hijackers loading the copper into their truck, but they immediately disappeared.

“He was then found the next day, holding a rope which was used to tie his hands and legs.

“It is said they forced him to drink poison, and he later died in hospital. “We wanted to know if he talked to someone after the incident, and the company should provide information using the trackers.

“Why would someone want to kill himself, yet he spent a day and night tied up; he could have escaped if he was part of the deal.”

Drama as suspect collapses in court

Drama as suspect collapses in court. The suspect, Jonathan Chirawo, who has been on the run since last year, collapsed after Harare magistrate, Yeukai Dzuda, advised she would entertain his bail application today because of time constraints.

There was drama in court over the weekend when a suspected fraudster collapsed after he was remanded in custody to today for bail consideration.

He was taken outside court for attention from the Prisons and Correctional Service officers. The complainant is Musorowegomo Mukosi, who is a journalist, farmer and miner who stays in Marondera.

Chirawo is an approved prospector, whose operations are regulated by the Mines and Minerals Act, and he assists miners in identifying and pegging open spaces and registration of blocks.

Allegations are that in January last year Mukosi was looking for someone to assist him to register three blocks of mines in Ossining. He went to the Manicaland Mines office where he approached Chirawo who offered his services.

It is alleged that in May 2021, the two met at Chirawo’s offices and he confirmed he was a registered prospector and demanded US$300 per block and a deposit of US$100 was made.

The duo agreed the balance would be settled when the certificate of registration was issued. The court heard that when Chirawo visited the blocks, he further demanded US$1 500, alleging that it was for the purpose of registering the blocks with the Ministry.

It is alleged Chirawo sent Tinashe Namani, his co accused, who has already appeared in court on the same charge, to collect the US$1 500 from Mukosi. Mukosi handed over the money.

Chirawo then called Mukosi and advised him that the certificate of registration would be out in a few days.

However, he soon became evasive and Mukosi went to the Mines Officer where he was told Chirawo had not paid any money.

Drama at POSB boardroom as retired CEO clings to job

Drama at POSB boardroom as retired CEO clings to the job. A boardroom fight has erupted at the People’s Own Savings Bank (POSB) over retired chief executive officer Admore Kandlela’s decision to hold on to the job despite having been paid terminal benefits.

NewZimbabwe.com reports that Kandlela’s bid to remain in the position is being resisted by some board members and senior management at the bank. An anonymous official told NewZimbabwe:

Kandlela was due to go on retirement as far back as 2013, however, through political connections his employment contract kept on being extended since then. Just recently, he was paid all his terminal benefits. He even took with him almost brand-new vehicles which he used during his last tenure.

We were surprised in the last few weeks to unearth that Kandlela is in the midst of negotiating a fresh employment contract and from my understanding, he is set to receive new vehicles and other benefits. This is worrisome since it will elbow out other contestants who are hoping to get the job.

The official added that some high-level officials within the finance ministry are backing his comeback as he is seen as a good linkage ahead of the bank’s privatisation amid suspicion that some political heavyweights want to seize controlling stake.

However, a section of the management and the board are reportedly opposed to the development, hence the emergence of divisions. Contacted for comment Kandlela said he was still below the legally acknowledged retirement age. He added:

What a pity. This post is being advertised in the press. Watch out this coming week and apply for the post, please. It’s being advertised through Proserve for these complaining younger candidates. There are no unnecessary additions. I am still below retirement age.

He urged NewZimbabwe to have “better facts” when he was asked the rationale behind the bank’s move to advertise a post whose candidate has already been identified.

ZIMSEC reportedly yet to pay Grade 7 exam markers

The examinations were written in December and the marking ended on January 20 this year.  Examiners who spoke to Newzimbabwe.com said (ZIMSEC) had promised to pay the teachers as soon as they finished marking the examinations.

Teachers who marked 2021 Grade Seven examinations are still to get their allowances despite promises by the Zimbabwe Schools Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) to pay them with speed. Each teacher was supposed to be paid ZW$15 per script.

Approximately, each person was supposed to mark about 500 scripts. One examiner told NewZimbabwe.com:

ZIMSEC only paid us our allowances which amounted to ZW$46 000 RTGS. As for the actual marking, we have not been paid anything so far. This money is very little, and we do not know why ZIMSEC is taking so long to pay so little.

Another examiner said ZIMSEC had breached the payment contract which stated that they were supposed to have been paid upon completion of marking. Added the examiner: We worked under very difficult conditions and some of us sacrificed our lives by accepting to mark the examinations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Early this month, the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) alleged that teachers who marked the examinations will be paid $16 500 for 14 marking days. The union described the figure as paltry and an insult to the teaching profession. Meanwhile, the results were released on the 4th of February.
