Family still seeking answers over killed prison officer. Nhlanhla Siziba (40) died two weeks ago after unknown people assaulted his brother until he fell unconscious, before turning on him. He was found dead on the highway after he was knocked down by a car.

The family of a murdered prison officer from Insiza district in Matabeleland South are still looking for answers as they claim that those involved in the crime are known but roaming the streets scot-free.

His brother Mr Charles Siziba was having a drink with his sibling and after the attack is believed to have been carried home. This is where he heard of the news of Nhlanhla’s death from a family friend Ms Sithembile Ndlovu who was returning from Bulawayo. Nhlanhla, a prison officer at Khami Prison, was buried a week ago in the Gadade area.

Mr Siziba, who has a deep cut at the back of his right ear said the family was to meet with the driver of the car that reportedly knocked down and killed his brother.

“We have been in contact with the person who knocked down Nhlanhla and as a family we are supposed to meet him. From this we shall establish what happened from his point of view. He shall tell us what he saw. So, I’m waiting for our parents who are travelling from Gwatemba to meet up with the man tomorrow (today),” said Mr Siziba.

He said he has been hearing reports that the men who attacked him and his brother are walking around the village.

“What surprises me is that people who I’m speaking to are telling me that those who attacked us are walking around the village. I’m not sure what is happening and my brother should not die in vain. It’s suspicious that his trousers were found metres away from the body. This to me shows that they were trying to rob us,” said Mr Siziba.

He said he has been told to travel to Shangani Police station to be updated about the death of his brother. National Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they were investigating the case.

“The alleged assault occurred whilst people were drinking beer. They later on had a scuffle and the prison officer tried to run across the road, then was struck by this vehicle and he died. We are conducting investigations in two parts, the assault and the road traffic accident,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.

Aston Villa feels Nakamba’s absence

Aston Villa feels Nakamba’s absence. The Warriors star picked a knee injury on December 11 when they played against Liverpool and has been recovering from a successful surgery.

Aston Villa are struggling to fill the void left by the injured Marvellous Nakamba, with Brazilian Douglas Luiz on the verge as he struggles for form.

That injury also ruled him out of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals that were staged in Cameroon last month.

In his absence, the Warriors failed to leave a lasting impression and while that is a closed chapter for now, it seems his unavailability has left Aston Villa manager Stephen Gerrard struggling to find a perfect holding midfielder, at least until Nakamba’s expected return in May.

At this point, Villa’s wretched run reads one win in seven matches. On Sunday, a furious Gerrard labelled his team’s defeat to Newcastle as the worst performance since he took the job back in November, with Luiz one of the fall guys following a lackadaisical performance in the midfield.

As a result, the former Liverpool captain hinted that he would make wholesale changes in their next match in six days’ time, with Luiz among other players likely to be benched.

Gerrard said. “I believe there will be changes to the team. That is only normal after a performance like that and everyone needs to be ready next week.”

In truth, their number six position, where Nakamba had been sterling before the injury, remains their main sticking point.

Nakamba’s position is arguably their most-important in the favoured 4-3-2-1 formation and that they did not acquire a back-up defensive linkman during the transfer window looks set to hurt them from now until May when he is expected to return.

“With Nakamba, he will be back fit soon so we will assess it as we go along. He was outstanding for us in the early weeks of our arrival,” Gerrard said.

Meanwhile, the long-term injury spell means Nakamba will again miss the 2023 Afcon qualifiers that are earmarked for March.

The qualifiers for the tournament to be held in Ivory Coast are set to run from March to September.

Report: Zanu-PF demands names of striking teachers

Report: Zanu-PF demands names of striking teachers. Zanu-PF activists in Umguza district, Matabeleland North province, have reportedly ordered school development committees (SDCs) to hand over names of striking teachers to the constituency offices.

Teachers in the area fear that they might be targeted as the country heads for the March 26 by-elections. Zanu-PF officials in Umguza circulated a message on the party’s WhatsApp group demanding names of absconding teachers.

“Morning Umguza, I request that SDCs must go to their schools and write down names of all teachers who did not turn up for work since the schools opened (Monday) up to Friday and submit the names of the school, and the names of the teachers to the constituency offices on February 16.

“Forward this message to your respective (WhatsApp) groups,” the message signed by one J Sibanda, the party’s district co-ordinating committee member, read. Matabeleland North Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe chairperson Kwanele Ndlovu rubbished the messages.

“As teachers, we must not be afraid of any message that does not come from our employer, we must remain guided by our public service contractual obligations,” Ndlovu said.

Zanu-PF Umguza legislator Richard Moyo expressed ignorance over the matter. “I am not aware of that as it is supposed to be done by the Public Service Commission.

“I will find out from the constituency if they have such a programme,” he said. Moyo is also Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs minister and party provincial chairperson.

Sulumani Sulu Chimbetu fails to pitch up for show

Sulumani Sulu Chimbetu fails to pitch up for show. Instead, Afro-fusion musician Carlos Green ended up serenading fans, warming up the stage in anticipation of Sulu’s arrival.

Dendera musician Sulumani Chimbetu failed to pitch up for a scheduled family show at Spirtzkop Leisure Centre in Harare on Sunday.

The Alice Mbewe hitmaker kept fans waiting until curfew hours, resulting in fans protesting. They threw missiles on stage, compelling Carlos Green to stop his performance.

“We saw the posters saying that Sulu would perform here at a family show, but we are surprised he has not pitched up. We fear it’s getting late and we are towards curfew,” said Addlife, one of the fans.

“We did not see any posters of this Carlos Green guy, but his guys were the ones collecting the entrance fees at the gate.” Takunda Maravanyika, who runs the joint, felt betrayed by Sulu.

“We had agreed that Sulu would perform at a family show dubbed Ndiwe Chete Mudzimai Wangu as a pre-Valentine’s Day gig, surprisingly the musician did not pitch up,” Maravanyika said.

“We had organised the show with Sulu’s manager Carlton Mparutsa and they even acknowledged by advertising the show on the musician’s Facebook page.”

“People protested after this guy (Carlos Green) kept on singing. We even checked with Carlton for Sulu’s arrival time and he kept promising us that he was on his way.”

Maravanyika added: “Fans became impatient and demanded their money back, arguing that they had come to see Sulu. It was Sulu’s team that had added Carlos Green to curtain-raise, not us. We did not negotiate any deal with Carlos Green.”

“We were forced to reimburse some of the fans as a way of maintaining our good brand.”

Mparutsa yesterday said he was not aware of the show. “I can’t comment on that as I am not informed. I was away in Honde Valley for a funeral and only arrived last night,” he said.

Morgan Tsvangirai speaks from the grave

Morgan Tsvangirai speaks from the grave. Exactlyfour years ago, the doyen of the country’s democratic struggle died. It was only befitting that the late Morgan Richard Tsvangirai would die on Valentine’s Day – on the day that the power of love is celebrated worldwide – for the man was an iconic patriot who not only loved his country but was reputably a man of love in many other respects.

As per tradition, today’s column is a special dedication in remembrance of Tsvangirai, a man I served for 10 years as his spokesperson and trusted lieutenant. He was a father, a friend and a boss all rolled in one.

Tsvangirai loved his white wine. He would invariably become free-willed and would open up his mind after several glasses of wine, which he loved just as he loved his golf.

Tsvangirai did not take any type of beer. While on a trip from Mberengwa to Zvishavane late 2013, I asked him if he had ever taken any type of beer and if so, why he had kicked the habit. He only told me that something embarrassing had happened after he and others had drunk to the advent of a new country in the promising and celebratory days of the roaring 1980s.

Since then, he said he had vowed never to drink beer again. I had dutifully refrained from pressing him for the intimate details of the embarrassing episode as it was clear he was not keen to shed any more light on the shameful misadventure, whatever it was.

We sat down one evening in 2014 as he exhorted me to write a piece on his personal reflections, almost a year after the stolen election of 2013.

He told me several talking points that touched on the election that had been brazenly stolen against the background of an inclusive government that had engendered so much hope and promise for the country.

He frankly spoke about his family, his love life and the despondency he had seen in the countryside in a nationwide tour in which we had traversed together the whole country together and engaged citizens in the immediate aftermath of the stolen plebiscite of July 2013. He also spoke about the naive assumption in 2013 that huge voting numbers in the absence of comprehensive reforms would overwhelm any Zanu-PF rigging plot, itself a cardinal lesson for us as the CCC leadership not to lose focus on the reform agenda.Morgan tsvangirayi

It was a candid and honest exchange that evening as he told me the talking points for his envisaged message to the people of Zimbabwe. He specifically instructed that I should dub the message his “personal reflections”.

We agreed that the op-ed would carry his byline so as to befittingly accord it the requisite intimate, personal touch. Deep in my mind, I had attributed the candidness and jovial looseness of mind to the half-empty bottle of white wine that arrogantly stood on the table before him.

However, my conjecture could be wrong. It may not have been the wine as he would later exhibit the same frankness and free-spiritedness when I routinely interviewed him on a wide range of issues for a book that is set to be published in the coming months.

For Service and Sacrifice, my forthcoming book, contains hitherto unknown details about his personal views on a wide array of matters, his work in government as well as his interactions and his working relationship with the late former President Robert Mugabe, particularly during the tenuous era of the inclusive government.

But the forthcoming book is a story for another day. That discussion that evening in 2014 for a candid opinion piece under his byline will forever remain ingrained in my mind. Here was the true Tsvangirai speaking from the heart. Unrestrained, free-flowing, unadulterated and genuine.

Today, in his memory, I republish the epic piece in which he reflected on his love life as well as a despondent country in the aftermath of a stolen election in which Zanu-PF had made so many promises but delivered none.

Today, having come from yet another stolen election in 2018 in which Zanu-PF promised to do so much and yet has delivered nothing, the country finds itself in the same space in which Tsvangirai wrote the piece below.Tsvangirai

Indeed, we are in the same political moment in which Tsvangirai reflected on a diverse array of issues, particularly on a weather-beaten people in the aftermath of an election in which Zanu-PF had promised so much and conspired to disappoint.

In his memory, amid a striking congruence in the moment in which his op-Ed was written, I will allow him to yet again address a similarly stressed nation from the grave!

Personal Reflections

By Morgan Tsvangirai

The lasting image of the last election that has remained largely ingrained in my mind is of the mammoth crowd that gathered in Harare on what we dubbed the Cross Over rally on July 29, 2013.

It is an indelible image of a nation that was geared for change, a determined people on the brink of crossing over to a new country with new opportunities under a new and competent dispensation.

Now it has been 11 months since the election on July 31 2013 and the swearing in of the current government of Zimbabwe; but the situation in the country is dispiriting.

Starting on September 3, 2013, I began a national conversation with the people of Zimbabwe.

I have travelled across the length and breath of our nation, engaging in dialogue with people from all walks of life and holding rallies that attracted multitudes.

In my visits to the various districts after the election, I have seen and witnessed the pain of Zimbabweans, the palpable despair among the people as they contemplated a future for themselves and their families under the Zanu-PF regime.

The ordinary people of this country are simply failing to cope with life in the current socio-economic circumstances that are upon us.

I spoke to pensioners that have found themselves pauperised, disenfranchised and smothered by the debilitating economic policies and unmitigated mismanagement by the Mugabe government.

I saw parents struggling to pay for their children’s school fees and for their healthcare; men and women emasculated by Zanu-PF’s failing policies and company closures.

I saw previously employed citizens and those seeking work who now cannot sustain a meaningful life, including university graduates vending airtime vouchers and anything else that can be sold.

Indeed, the nation has become one big mall, a huge “Siyaso” market with everyone trying to sell something to someone just to make ends meet.

I saw villagers struggling to buy basics for their families, huge families surviving on far much less that US$1 per day.

The question on everybody’s mind is how so much pain, despair and desperation can immediately follow what our colleagues in Zanu-PF would want to call a resounding victory that gave them an overwhelming mandate?

From where we had started since the formation of the inclusive government in early 2009 and where we had reached by 2013, notable progress had been recorded and hope for a brighter future sufficiently generated.

The desperate times of the crisis era of 2008 had become a distant memory and a new sense of hope had crept in the country by the time we held the last election. The past had become another country.

We all thought that the election was going to result in the consolidation of the hope and the progress that had set in the country after 2009.

My heart is heavy today, as we accelerate towards the same economic turmoil from where we had rescued the people of Zimbabwe some five years ago!

Closeted at State House, Mugabe remains marooned from the reality of the national situation, oblivious to the daily predicament facing Zimbabweans as they struggle to survive.

The last election
As the elections drew nearer, much of the intelligence we had gathered had pointed to the reality that the shenanigans of Zanu-PF were at play.

But we had judged that our sheer numbers were going to overwhelm the electoral mischief Zanu-PF had planned. Put simply, we underestimated the level of subversion of the people’s will that had been planned.

I remember my meeting with Mugabe on the eve of the election, a meeting facilitated by former Nigeria President Olusegun Obasanjo at which I tabled a copy of a couple of pages of the shambolic voters’ roll that was to be used in the elections the following day.

Mugabe’s response was – Ivo vana Mudede vanombozvifambisa sei? (How is the Registrar-General Mudede doing his work?). He said this as he reclined in his chair, feigning ignorance of what was about to happen.

Despite our much-concerted efforts to get the electronic voters’ roll in time and not getting it, we eventually participated in the elections without the said voters’ roll. As we in the MDC have said, we had assumed that our sheer numbers were going to overwhelm the rigging plot. With the benefit of hindsight, we were wrong.

As the results of the elections became clear to our people on the ground, the nation had once again been shortchanged in yet another electoral fraud. That election was the beginning of the unprecedented uncertainty and we must budget for more such uncertainty under this dark cloud of illegitimacy. All the hope that had been generated for the nation has simply disappeared.

It had appeared to me after 2008 that Zanu-PF had begun to appreciate the overwhelming impact of illegitimacy on all sectors of the economy. We all thought Mugabe had come to desire a dignified exit. And again, that is as far as my humanity had judged. We were wrong.

But I want to restate that we remain a determined people. We are confident that the change we seek will definitely be achieved well within our lifetime.

Naysayers and doomsayers may be prematurely writing our obituary but we remain focused on what we set out to achieve in 1999. And we will achieve it. I have great faith in the people of Zimbabwe. We are a heroic people that will not tire until we achieve the peace, stability, democracy and prosperity that our country desires and deserves.

The Economy
Since the contested elections of 2013, the economy is failing to gain any traction. This single issue has brought about an array of problems as the symptoms below reveal.

To the citizen, we have seen insecure jobs to the few that still have them, unfulfilled promises to civil servants and inadequate remuneration as well as the disappearance and diminishing of any form of savings. Systemic corruption and unbridled avarice have become an albatross of this economy. And this at a time when the country itself is seriously mired in debt, the external debt of which is in excess of $10 billion.

We have a government that has failed to mobilise a rescue package for the productive sector in order to breathe life into this economy. There is unmitigated failure on the part of government to come up with a solution to rescue this abysmal situation.

The policy uncertainty and inconsistencies on key programmes such indigenisation and economic empowerment is not helping matters in bringing sanity and predictability, the two key factors for economic stability.

There is an acute lack of investor confidence and support by development partners, driven by the legitimacy crisis, as well as a ballooning debt which remains unserviced.

Without legitimacy, the country remains exposed to risk and uncertainty, two factors that determine investment and economic progress.

The government simply has run out of ideas, even in the wake of shrinking revenue collections as a result of a diminishing base. The purported economic blueprint, ZimAsset, needs funding to the tune of $27 billion, and this at time when we have failed to fund an annual budget that needed around $4 billion.

The ZimAsset programme, supposedly the panacea to our economic success, has failed to attract any funding whatsoever.

Our grim economic plight as a people would have been surmountable had there been a credible election last year, even if it had meant a genuine and fair loss by the MDC-T.

The business sector has been crippled and shackled by a biting liquidity crunch, creating a gridlock that has negatively affected commerce and the services sector.

Do nations fail due to the inflexibility of mindsets and do nations succeed due to the flexibility of attitudes? True and honest leaders should know that at any particular time, the success and failure of nations can only be located in the mindset of the national leadership in the seat of government.

Lastly, despite all our shortcomings, I believe a sunrise is possible and the dawn must start within our well-meaning selves.

Despite Africa’s investment attractiveness and a rising appetite for African products across the world, Zimbabwe has missed out on this emerging optimism on Africa that would have done wonders for our economy.

A man greatly misunderstood
As the leader of a great people’s movement, the MDC, and with a mandate derived directly from the people, it is my desire to drive this struggle to its logical conclusion.

But I am saddened by the preoccupation with false narratives that are meant to divert us from the real problems facing the people. One such preoccupation is the pursuit of the issue of my assumed weakness with women.

After my wife died in an accident back in 2009, life has not been easy going – that fateful day will not leave me. But despite sad experiences, life continues.

As you all know, due to extensive publicity in the media with respect to my relationships with women, an attempt has been made to portray my perceived errors to be the sum total of who I am.

It is possible after such a loss for one to be on an emotional roller coaster. This becomes more acute as one grapples with the adjustment to a life without a partner who anchored you socially, at the same time laden with the burden of national responsibility to address an intricate national crisis.

As a leader, I have come to terms with the nature of public office as requiring public accountability. I am continuing to reflect and strive to live up to those high expectations. I have fought for the proliferation of media in Zimbabwe, as I am a firm believer in the necessity of the checks and balances that the media provide.

I have since moved on and now share a commitment with my wife, Elizabeth. I have taken ownership of my responsibilities, which I continue to meet within my resources.

The other false narrative is that I want to die in office. I will state unequivocally that I have no intention of staying a day longer at the helm of the MDC without the people’s mandate. But I will also pronounce, with the same vigour and vehemence, that I will not be hounded out undemocratically through a hostile take-over outside a people’s process called a party congress.

We cannot be self-contradictory as to claim to be democrats when at the same time we want to remove elected leadership through a coup de tat. Our national council has taken a position to bring forward our party congress from 2016 to October this year. It is at that platform where all positions, including the presidency, are open for contestation and I urge fellow party members to understand that it is that forum that elects and removes leaders.

Party members know that even the presidency is open for contestation by any nominated member and I make a guarantee that no one will be stopped from contesting for any position because we are a democratic party.

Our international relations
The current national reality is that we are isolated from meaningful investment capital flow and substantial development financial assistance.

Zanu-PF’s narrowly focused and confined “Look East” policy has not yielded direct fiscal support.

We have had a myopic foreign policy that overlooks the significance of the broader international community, thereby underplaying the potential of leveraging on international relationships in a broad sense.

We must once again rejoin the family of nations, in its wide scope, in mutually beneficial relationships, but largely driven, on our part, by the desire to enhance and further the interest of the ordinary citizen of this country.

Zimbabwe needs friends, strategic partners and promoters across the breath of the international community. Our international relations, even at the regional level, require fixing.

We have been consistently inconsistent for so long that there are not many takers supporting our plans for the way forward. The safest bet is to shift our mindset towards new thinking and new pronouncements that are inclined towards mutually beneficial policies.

My vision
I envision a new Zimbabwe.

I see a great nation rising from the ashes of Zanu-PF misrule. I see the realisation of our promise for a better future for our children and our great-grandchildren in a land full of happiness and abundance.

I see the possibility of reconciliation of all peoples. A nation working together in resolving its confidence crisis.

I envision a Zimbabwe with a new ethos, where people live in peaceful co-existence regardless of their cultural, ethnic, racial, religious or political differences.

Given our traumatic past, we must learn to tolerate and reconcile with each other; to draw a line in the sand and say never again should any citizen be slaughtered on ethnic, racial, political or any other grounds for that matter. We must be an inclusive, united society that is ready to swim or sink together, where diversity is celebrated rather than punished.

It is the celebration of our differences that will ultimately make our democracy hold.

In the new Zimbabwe, there will be no compromise on the dignity of the citizen, which, thankfully, is now enshrined in our Constitution. All citizens must enjoy the true meaning of life by being treated equally by government and all state institution. The equality and dignity of all citizens will be the cornerstone of our democracy in the new Zimbabwe.

We aspire for a Zimbabwe characterised by economic prosperity, with notable increases in GDP and individual income levels. A country with increased productivity through strategic investment partnerships in the agricultural, manufacturing and mining sectors; productivity that will ultimately benefit the ordinary citizen.

I envision a new Zimbabwe with a modernised transport infrastructure that includes the resuscitation of the competitiveness of our national airline. We need to invest in upgrading our airports to promote commerce, trade and tourism.

I see a new Zimbabwe where the participation of women and the youth in mainstream economic activities is guaranteed and encouraged.

We aspire for a new nation with an accountable government; a country where a prosperous economy prevails underpinned by the rule of law, political stability, policy consistency and predictability.

We must build a corrupt-free Zimbabwe with a government that is at the forefront of aggressively tackling systemic graft and dismantling the rise of unjust practices.

An efficient public service is the cornerstone of an efficient government.

There is need in the new society we envisage to de-politicise the public service; to harness efficiencies and new competencies as well as implementing institutional transformation to prepare public institutions with the onerous role to efficiently serve the people of Zimbabwe.

Efficient social service delivery will engender happiness among our citizens by ensuring the provision of affordable and qualitative clean water, healthcare and education across the nation.

We strongly believe in the sacred commitment to our liberation war and democratic struggle heroes and heroines.

I pledge that these will be fully recognised as the champions of our country’s important struggles and mechanisms will be put in place not only to celebrate and honour them, but to respond to their family and welfare needs through sustainable means.

Way forward

In January this year, I made a State of the nation address in which I spoke of the need for dialogue to address the debilitating economic and social crisis that we face.

I notice the emerging consensus on my call for dialogue. The same call has been made by international institutions, Cabinet ministers, economists and civic society.

Given our current economic paralysis, that national conversation to rescue the nation has become more urgent than ever before.

There is an urgent imperative for a national conversation of more players than just political parties.

The important aspect is that our dialogue must this time be broadened to include the trade unions, the church, students, industry and other stakeholders.

The broad spectrum of stakeholders in that important dialogue must discuss, find consensus and map the way forward on the current economic crisis, the endemic poverty across the length and breadth of the nation and the massive unemployment in the country.

Those outside our struggle who are impatient for a solution outside well-meaning dialogue must recognise that democracy without stability leads to nowhere, but equally, stability without democracy and dialogue cannot lead to national prosperity.

Lastly, we have walked this tortuous road together. We bear permanent scars from this our tenacious quest for peace, prosperity and development in the country of our birth.

Zimbabwe is the only country we have.

Zimbabweans bear testimony to my personal desire to see the fruition of the people’s struggle for positive change.

I cannot even begin to count the personal loss to each one of us in our pursuit of happiness, democracy, stability and prosperity in a new Zimbabwe.

I know only too well what it means to be a true patriot driven only by the desire for a prosperous, democratic nation.

For I too have borne the brunt of repression as a reward for my unstinting patriotism. I have been beaten up in a police station and faced serious trumped up charges, lost a loved one and endured the loss of so many cadres in this tortuous journey towards our democratic transformation.

But beyond our painful collective national experience lies a new country with new hope and abundant opportunities. The sunset of our struggle will lead to a sunrise of abundance and success.

In spite of our deep scars, we shall persevere to the very end.

We are a heroic people.

We will certainly outlive our current setbacks and the dark and traumatic experience of political violence, our burnt houses, the rapes and the murders we have suffered along this painful road. They have failed to break our collective spirit.

I have no doubt in my mind that regardless of how long it may take, we shall eventually overcome and cry tears of joy.

Machete gang steals car. Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident yesterday saying Trymore Dhikiza was robbed of his Toyota Vitz vehicle by two men who produced a machete and forced him out of his car upon entering Kwekwe.

A Midlands motorist lost his vehicle to a machete-wielding gang last week after he offered the criminals a lift at Redcliff turn off, Southern Eye has learnt.

“On February 13, Dhikiza offered two men a lift at the Redcliff turn off,” Mahoko said. “When they reached a bus stop in Kwekwe, the two men produced a machete and forced the driver to disembark from the vehicle and they (robbers) drove away.” In an unrelated incident, 10 men stole 100kg of gold carbon at a mine in Mvuma.

Mahoko said on Sunday at around 1250pm, the men, who were armed with logs and bars arrived at the mine and assaulted two security guards who were on duty. “They demanded keys to the carbon room and went inside before stealing two 50kg bags of carbon gold,” he said.

NUST receives $125m for construction works

NUST receives $125m for construction works. Construction works at Nust have been stagnant for almost 18 years with hanging cranes and incomplete buildings being synonymous with the university.

Government has released $125 million to the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) for construction works, a development that will positively impact on the construction industry in Bulawayo.

In the 2022 national budget, the university was allocated $1 billion to complete its giant library and shopping complex. Although the 2022 budgetary allocations have not been disbursed to Nust, Government has released some funds to kickstart construction works.

This follows pleas from various stakeholders including industry players that there is an urgent need to complete construction works at Nust.

In 2016, the university’s former vice-chancellor and late national hero Professor Phineas Makhurane who died in 2018 urged Government to avail funds to Nust saying the university had not developed since he left in 2004.

Nust is mandated to produce graduates biased towards science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), but due in part to lack of proper infrastructure, the institution has been recruiting more commercial-oriented students, betraying its core mandate.

In an interview, Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Minister Professor Amon Murwira said funds have been released to set the tone for construction works at the institution.

The Minister recently held a meeting with the university’s leadership to outline the Ministry’s vision as far as development of Nust is concerned.

“We released $125 million for the university to acquire construction materials and they are doing so. We had a meeting with the council on Wednesday just to team work on the construction work,” said Prof Murwira.

Nust’s departments of estates and engineering are going to lead the construction works as the main contractor. The construction of the university is expected to contribute to local economic growth.

Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Permanent Secretary Mr Paul Nyoni said Nust has been lagging behind in terms of infrastructure development. He said lack of development at the institution could be impacting on the university’s human capital development.

“Nust has lagged behind in terms of infrastructure development. That (its construction) is critical. We need to complete our basic infrastructure in terms of the university and its structures. But as we do that, we will create opportunities for thousands of people in the value chain, going down from the supplier of bricks, supplier of cement and supplier of the labour. All those people will benefit,” said Mr Nyoni.

He said as funds are released to complete some of the outstanding buildings, more money should be released to start the construction of the university’s standalone medical school.

Nust is supposed to have 27 buildings, but only seven have been completed and some buildings are now dilapidated. The university is at the moment using Mpilo Central Hospital as its main campus for the Faculty of Medicine.

“In fact, we are hoping that the medical school construction will start soon. There is critical shortage of medical personnel and all those programmes that might come out from the medical school, will come out from a properly structured institution with relevant facilities so that we produce in those fields,” he said.

Mr Nyoni said Nust has proven its capacity to solving local challenges hence there is a need to complete its construction for society’s greater good.

“Nust plays and continues to play a critical role in response to Covid-19. They are one of the pioneers of production of sanitisers and fumigation hydrogen peroxide and have assisted many public institutions with those products,” said Mr Nyoni.

“And that is what we expect them to do going forward, we expect them to continue finding solutions in the production matrix as we move forward. Because whatever we used to have 10 years ago is hardly irrelevant and is becoming completely uncompetitive. We need people who are trained in the modern ways of doing things.”

Ever since Mohale Motaung and his estranged husband separated not too long ago, there is no counting how many times the media personality has landed on the wrong side of Black Twitter.

Most times it is purely because of something harmless and at this rate, Mohale has probably gotten used to all the hate already.

Just recently on Valentine’s Day, fellow media personality Bonang Matheba was hosting her House of BNG Valentine’s Brunch that saw many of her friends and industry mates join in the celebration.
One of those in attendance was Mohale who has since been posting the photos of him and Bonang looking absolutely stunning. As you can already imagine, the feedback on social media and from his fans was that the two looked great with many of course gushing over Queen B’s look.

And to think that tweeps would stop there, Black Twitter has decided to do what it does best; troll Mohale from here to Timbuktu.

In a tweet that has since been deleted, Mohale took to his Twitter to gush over how Bonang is gorgeous and boy did the trolls not waste a minute on him.

4 Zimbos jailed 8 years each for stealing cell tower batteries. Milton Ncube, 36, Talent Moyo, 26, Malacky Moyo, 47, and Mphokeleli Ndlovu, 26, were arrested in September 2019 in Klerksdorp in the North West in connection with the theft of 18 lithium batteries from a tower belonging to a cellphone service provider.

Four men have been sentenced to eight years direct imprisonment in the Klerksdorp Regional Court each on charges of tampering with essential infrastructure. According to the provincial police spokesperson, Captain Aafje Botma, the batteries were initially stolen and replaced but stolen again the following day.

“Consequent to the intensive search by the police and private security personnel in Klerksdorp, a white Toyota Fortuner was eventually spotted driving away from the tower.

“The suspects were ultimately arrested in Potchefstroom by the local Flying Squad members and 18 batteries were found in their vehicle.

“The accused were linked to two more cases of tampering with essential infrastructure committed in September 2019 in Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom respectively,” Botma said.

The accused applied for bail, however, this was successfully opposed by the State and they remained in custody for the duration of the matter against them.

The court further declared the group unfit to possess firearms and after the completion of their sentences, the court ordered their deportation back to Zimbabwe.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena has commended all the role players for their dedication that resulted in securing the group’s sentencing.

Kwena said this sentencing will sound as a warning to those who tamper and destroy infrastructure.

President Mnangagwa flys off to Brussels, Belgium. Scores of leaders from the European Union and African Union are expected to attend the key meeting where world leaders exchange ideas and forge deals.

President Mnangagwa is expected to leave the country today for Brussels, Belgium, for the EU/AU summit as he bolsters the country’s re-engagement and engagement initiative that has seen Zimbabwe’s relations with former hostile nations improving. THE 6th AU-EU summit will be held on February 17 and 18.

In a statement, the EU said the summit presents a “unique opportunity to lay the foundations for a renewed and deeper AU-EU partnership with the highest political involvement and based on trust and a clear understanding of mutual interests”.

“The aim is to launch an ambitious Africa-Europe investment package, taking into account global challenges such as climate change and the current health crisis,” part of the agenda says.

At the meeting peace and security issues are expected to feature prominently especially as there are threats of destabilisation on both continents.

There will be a series of thematic meetings that will discuss topics that include growth financing, health systems, and vaccine production, agriculture and sustainable development, education, culture and vocational training, migration and mobility, private sector support, and economic integration.

EU and AU Heads of State will be participating in the roundtables, together with a selected group of external guests who are experts in their respective fields. “A joint declaration on a joint vision for 2030 is expected to be adopted by the participants.”

Coming on the backdrop of a hugely successful trip to Glasgow Scotland for the COP26 meeting that was held last year, the visit to Belgium where the EU parliament is located is yet another breakthrough for Zimbabwe, under the leadership of President Mnangagwa who has made re-engagement one of his administration’s key policies.

CCC VP Tendai Biti speaks on his arrest in Greendale. Citizens Coalition for Change deputy president Tendai Biti was arrested at Spar, Letombo, in Msasa/Greendale and taken to Law and Order Department at Harare Central Police Station before he was transferred to Rhodesville Police Station, a short distance from Harare Central Business District.

Biti said that his arrest by members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Msasa, Harare, on Monday shows that Zimbabwe needs fundamental changes for the rule of law to be observed.

Following the intervention of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Biti was released without a charge. Posting on Twitter this Tuesday, Biti said:

They arrested us yesterday without charge or cause while on our campaign at Letombo Spar in Msasa. They took us to Law and Order Department at Harare Central Police Station.

They eventually released us without charge at Rhodesville Police Station. This was wanton abuse of our rights and the rule of law. Yesterday’s events demonstrate why real and fundamental change is required in Zimbabwe.

A brand new consensus based on putting citizens first based on trust, justice equality and inclusiveness. We are however grateful to Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) lawyers, Tino, Idi, the indefatigable Alec Muchadehama for help.

We express our indebtedness to countless citizens all over for their love and concern. We express gratitude to [journalist Hopewell Chin’ono], [The NewsHawks], [Makomborero Haruzivishe] and many others.Tendai-Biti-Nelson-Chamisa

They can bend us, kill us or detain us but there will be a change in Zimbabwe and soon. We shall never give up. Zikomo zikomo. Biti was arrested while on a “meet and greet” campaign as he is the CCC candidate for Harare East constituency in the 26 March by-election.

His arrest comes after ZANU PF held a rally in Epworth on Saturday which was attended by thousands of people. The MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora also staged a rally in Highfields also on Saturday with hundreds of people in attendance. In both instances, the ZRP did not make any arrests.

Standard Bank named Africa’s most valuable banking brand

Standard Bank named Africa’s most valuable banking brand. Stanbic Bank’s parent company, Standard Bank Group, has emerged as the most valuable banking brand on the African continent for 2022 in Brand Finance’s annual ranking of the world’s Top 500 Banking Brands, after increasing its brand value by 26% to USD1.583 billion.

This significant increase in brand value has seen Africa’s largest financial services organisation by assets jump 17 places to rank 145th globally.

For a third consecutive year, Standard Bank has also increased its reputation score above the South African banking sector average, according to Brand Finance’s Global Brand Equity Monitor.

Every year, Brand Finance puts 5 000 of the biggest brands to the test and publishes nearly 100 reports, ranking brands across different sectors and countries.

The world’s top 500 most valuable and strongest banking brands are included in the annual Brand Finance Banking 500 ranking. Sim Tshabalala, Standard Bank Group Chief Executive, says:

We’re delighted by our brand’s performance as it spotlights the hard work undertaken over the past few years to radically overhaul our business model and transform experiences for clients.

The Group has invested heavily in disruptive technologies to provide our clients with banking, asset management and insurance solutions to enable them to achieve their unique goals and ambitions.

In 2019, Standard Bank began a journey that fundamentally redefined its business. As it undertook a future-ready transformation and the expansion into a platform business, it also introduced a comprehensive brand repositioning, the first in 10 years, culminating in the launch of the ‘It Can Be’ brand promise in 2020. Thulani Sibeko, Standard Bank’s Chief Brand and Marketing Officer, says:

Our brand positioning aligns with our organisation’s ambition to transform client experiences based on researched client insights.

Our people are inspired and committed to providing solutions and experiences that matter and create value for our clients.

Recently, Standard Bank reached the 10 million customer mark in South Africa, which Sibeko says has been driven in part by gaining momentum within the mass market. Said Sibeko:

The introduction of our value banking solution MyMo, for example, has enabled more people to access our brand for the first time.

He adds that the increase in customer acquisition can also be attributed to the continuous introduction of new and innovative solutions to make the lives of clients easier.

An example is FlexiFuneral, which allows customers to choose their level of benefits and amount of cover. Also recently introduced is Unayo, a digital payments platform that connects the higher and lower ends of the value chain, thereby stimulating economic activity across Africa. Sibeko said:

We are enormously proud of our treasure chest of innovations and achievements, all of which impact individuals, businesses, or communities.

The trust that consumers have in the Standard Bank brand continues to serve it well, believes Sibeko. He adds:

Our clients think of us as a safe bank, and we take the role of financial custodianship extremely seriously, in the systems and processes we implement to safeguard our clients from increasingly sophisticated fraudulent threats.”

We are both proud and honoured to be awarded the title of Africa’s most valuable bank brand. The most successful brands are often the most relevant, and remaining relevant means constantly evolving, and changing with developing client requirements.

This year, Standard Bank will be celebrating its 160th year of enabling individuals and businesses to achieve their ambitions – a testament to our innovation, resilience, commitment and adaptability.

Civil Servants: Latest salary increment is enough

Civil Servants: Latest salary increment is enough. In an interview with Zimpapers Television Network (ZTN), the secretary for the Public Sector Trade Unions David Dzatsunga said while the salary adjustment is not good enough, it should at least be enough to enable civil servants to return to work.

Civil servants say they are now able to go to work after the Government awarded them a 20 per cent Zimbabwe dollar salary increment plus an additional US$100 cash allowance, among other incentives. He said:

We believe that these new measures will certainly make it difficult to justify incapacitation. With US$175, the RTGS component could amount to an extra US$100 and we are looking at US$375 for the lowest worker on the current obtaining parallel market rate.

I believe that US$375 should be enough, it’s not good enough, it’s not the best, but it should be enough for someone to get to work.

Teachers downed tools when schools opened for the 2022 first term on Monday citing incapacitation and the Government responded by suspending the striking teachers. Dzatsunga said they were in negotiations with the Government over the suspension of the teachers. He said:

We had a fallout on the Government side with the threat to punish teachers who didn’t travel to their workstations because of incapacitation. They have genuine problems of incapacitation and the divide was too wide between the poverty line and their income.

Also speaking to ZTN, Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Paul Mavima called for cool heads on both sides for progress’ sake. Said Mavima: It’s almost a matter that is sub judice because there are now court challenges and other things like that.

It’s not proper for us to be dragging each other through the courts and it’s not proper for the learners of this country to not be attended to as the Government is making frantic and very genuine efforts to improve the conditions of service of the workers.

I would appeal to everyone to really maintain a position of rationality so that we can move our country forward.

Teachers label Unions as sellouts

Teachers label Unions as sellouts. One aggrieved teacher who spoke to NewsDay on Monday castigated the unions for allegedly conniving with the government to suspend them.

Some teachers who have not been taking classes since last week citing incapacitation, have accused the Zimbabwe Teachers Union (ZIMTA) and the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) of betraying them.  Said the teacher:

ZIMTA and PTUZ are selling out but we are not going to go back to work as we are still incapacitated. However, ZIMTA secretary-general Goodwill Taderera denied selling out the teachers. He said:

I wouldn’t call it selling out. We are just working on what was discussed with the National Joint Negotiating Committee (NJNC).

There is a circular that ZIMTA put out urging teachers to go back to work. PTUZ president Takavafira Zhou yesterday also denied the allegations that his union has let down teachers. Zhou said:

I have a track record to protect. To whom will I even sell the struggle when the government does not want to see my face in any meeting as they accuse me of supporting the regime change agenda?

I cannot salivate at ZANU PF predatory leaders, thuggery and thievery. The majority of teachers and headmasters at public schools initially rejected the Government’s 20% salary increment to all civil servants and a US$100 allowance to be converted from the local currency salary component.

They vowed not to return to work until the Government restored their pre-October 2018 salary of US$540.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Evelyn Ndlovu responded by suspending all the striking teachers, but the move has been challenged in court.

ZANU PF: Tsvangirai was a National Institution

$

ZANU PF: Tsvangirai was a National Institution. ZANU PF has described the late veteran trade unionist and opposition MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai, as “a national institution” and “beacon of democracy”.

Tsvangirai died aged 65 at a South African hospital on 14 February 2018 after a long battle with colon cancer. Addressing a Press conference in Harare on Monday, 14 February 2022, ZANU PF spokesperson Chris Mutsvangwa said:

Tsvangirai was a national institution and his name and the MDC party were equally a beacon for the fight in Zimbabwe for what is just and what is democratic, now the name disappears in history, now Tsvangirai is gone, replaced by Chete Chete Chete and the name MDC is gone too, finished just like that can you imagine.

Nelson Chamisa, who succeeded Tsvangirai as MDC-T leader under controversial circumstances in 2018 but now leads Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) said on Twitter:

A giant, a mentor, a fighter, a democrat and a confidante — this day you exited this life. They are still trying those old tactics they used against you. They will not succeed. The struggle is in safe hands. Sadly missed. Rest in power mudhara (old man).

CCC national spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said that they will ensure that Tsvangirai’s dream of attaining a democratic Zimbabwe will be fulfilled. She said:

This is the best honour we can give to his legacy. We will not allow the regime to consume or use us to fight the will of the people. We will ensure that we complete the mission of attaining a democratic Zimbabwe. One day, Zimbabwe will be free.

The spokesperson for the MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe, Ntando Ndlovu described Tsvangirai as a man of the people. Ndlovu said:

There is no debate that Tsvangirai deserves his own space in the national narrative for the significant role he played in shaping the country’s post-liberation politics.

We remember him as a leader who was able to listen to everyone regardless of their social status. He was, indeed, a man of the people.

We implore all pro-democracy forces to form a united front to remove Zanu PF from power. That is the tribute that we can give to our late departed leader.

Tsvangirai was named Zimbabwe’s Prime Minister in 2009 after protracted negotiations with then president, the late Robert Mugabe. The Government of National Unity that was formed following a Global Political Agreement (GPA) helped to bring political and economic stability to the country.
