Gang of Zimbabweans convicted of identity and credit card fraud in the UK

Gang of Zimbabweans convicted of identity and credit card fraud in the UK. The five men, some of whom are refugees from Zimbabwe, stole post and got hold of personal details so that they could then obtain “numerous” credit cards. A gang of fraudsters targeted rural County Durham addresses in order to intercept their post and steal identities.

It’s estimated around £165,000 worth of credit was obtained by the gang in total in 2018, some of which was used to buy expensive items during shopping trips to Newcastle and the Metrocentre. A member of the group also used a false name to book a stay at Headlam Hall Hotel in Darlington where he ordered champagne and dinner.

Tendai Dlamini, 41, Gray Gwewo, 26, Raphael Munemo, 33, Vincent Zhanje-Zwouche, 31, and Tacu Ndhlovu, 27, appeared at Durham Crown Court on Monday to be sentenced for the fraud conspiracy. Paul Abrahams, prosecuting, said the men were caught as part of an investigation led by the North East Regional Special Operations Unit (NERSOU).

The gang “deliberately targeted” rural addresses in York and County Durham where the post boxes were located away from the homes and on main roads.

Their post was then intercepted by the gang and credit was then applied for using their personal details. After that, victims’ accounts would be “taken over”. Mr Abrahams said the fraud had a “great impact” on the victims, some of whom ran farms.

Zambian-born Munemo was said to be the leader, and booked a stay at Headlam Hall where he ordered champagne and dinner, the court heard. He made shopping trips to Birmingham, Newcastle and the Metrocentre and obtained around £105,000 credit – £23,928 of which was used.

Zhanje-Zwouche was said to have had a “lesser role” to Munemo, and used around £24,000 credit. Gwewo stole post on behalf of the others and used around £45,000 credit.

Dlamini, who had 22 previous convictions for offences of theft and violence, used £2,000 credit and was found guilty after a trial. Ndhlovu was said to be “less involved” than the others, but used £22,000 credit.

Defending barrister, OlaJide Lanlehin, for Dlamini, said he was “deeply apologetic” and had a “deep sense of remorse”. Dlamini, who appeared via link from HMP Durham, also read out a tearful letter to the court, pleading for forgiveness.

Stephen Tete, defending Munemo, who also appeared via link from HMP Durham and was found guilty after trial, said he had now “changed in character”, and had arrived in the UK at the age of 17 following the loss of his parents.

Judge Ray Singh indicated that the other three defendants would receive suspended sentences. The judge said the gang “committed identity fraud which led on to applications to a number of banking and credit card institutions”. He said credit cards were issued “without difficulty”.

Opposition blamed for tarnishing Morgan Tsvangirai’s legacy

Opposition blamed for tarnishing Morgan Tsvangirai’s legacy. Tsvangirai succumbed to colon cancer on February 14 in 2018. His three deputies have since split, with each one of them leading their own faction of the party he led. All of them claim to be champions of his legacy and claim their parties stand for his beliefs.

Four years after the death of democracy icon Morgan Tsvangirai, the opposition is falling short of his fighting spirit and wantonly tarnishing his legacy, political analysts have said. Southern African Political Economy Series Trust (SAPES) founder and political scientist Ibbo Mandaza said:

“Tsvangirai led the first formidable opposition against the ruling party in the formation of the MDC party in 1999, he equipped himself as a very brave patriot against the odds especially from 2000 onwards when the Zimbabwean state relied more and more on the military establishment to this day.”

“Tsvangirai stood his ground and has to be remembered for that and what he has left behind. Regrettably, he left a very unsettled succession situation with three vice presidents, a feature which has embroiled the MDC into what we have seen over the last three to four years. Tsvangirai left behind a legacy which is similar to that of most fallen political parties including the Zanu-PF party; the failure to manage succession issues that led to a coup in November 2017 and the power squabbles currently going on in the ruling party.”

Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) president Nelson Chamisa, MDC Alliance leader Douglas Mwonzora and MDC-T’s Thokozani Khupe have been at each other’s throats since Tsvangirai’s death on February 4, 2018.

Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiCZ) chairman and former Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president Peter Mutasa said Tsvangirai was a visionary leader who fought a brutal regime but unfortunately, left a legacy that has not been taken seriously. “For me Tsvangirai was a man of huge character who left behind a formidable legacy which sadly, is no longer being pursued,” said Mutasa.

“Currently if you talk to workers and even trade unions they talk about being apolitical and indifferent to politics, they have lost that analytical eye and analytical mind that Morgan and his team had and this is what I give him thumbs up for. He and his team could read the signs, could read the time and politics even though they were not as educated as we are today.

Most trade unionists have degrees and PhDs but Tsvangirai and his crew had social education and understood things that we could not understand, so we are very happy about his legacy. We are unfortunately falling short in terms of his fighting spirit, his courage and his leadership acumen,” Mutasa said.

For him, Tsvangirai was bigger than the MDC and he remained the cornerstone of the party until his death.

“In my view, Tsvangirai remained our inspiration, we were always arrested by the regime, brutalized, but that courage has not died, motivating young trade unionists. A lot of activists are proteges of Morgan Tsvangirai. We are all inspired by him.”

Tsvangirai’s death went as far as dividing his family. His widow Elizabeth Macheka and last born Richard have openly declared their support for Chamisa and his new CCC outfit while Vincent is a member of the Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC-T.

Hosea Chipanga set to contest Dangamvura-Chikanga by-e;ection. Legendary musician Hosea Chipanga will contest the Dangamvura-Chikanga Constituency in the 26 March by-elections on a Patriotic Zimbabweans Party ticket.

Chipanga urged voters to abandon opposition legislators and councillors whom he accused of failing to deliver. Said Chipanga:

We are preparing for the by-elections following the holding of the nomination court. There are a number of problems in our constituency that include poor road network and unavailability of clean water.

Our expectations were that the legislators could attend to laws and policies that promote growth and sustainability.

The local council was drafting budgets that were not supported by income-generating initiatives. The council only focuses on rentals and rates to fund their operations instead of thinking outside the box.

We now have a challenge where people are fond of political parties and not their country. That’s the major challenge we are facing at the moment.

Chipanga will square off against five other candidates namely Esau Mupfumi (ZANU PF), Taurai Mudzipurwa (MDC Alliance), Prosper Mutseyami (CCC) and Anesu Zaranyika (MA’AT Zimbabwe Party).

In 2017, Chipanga formed his own party, the Kingdom of God on Earth but abandoned his project in 2021 to join the Patriotic Zimbabweans Party.

Court blocks govt from repossessing Jonathan Moyo’s farm

Court blocks govt from repossessing Jonathan Moyo’s farm. Justices Chinembiri Bhunu, George Chiweshe and Joseph Musakwa, on appeal, overturned a High Court ruling dismissing Moyo’s urgent application for an interdict against the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development and Barclos Mujuru.

The Supreme Court has blocked President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government from seizing exiled former cabinet minister Jonathan Moyo’s farm in Mazowe. Moyo co-owns Patterson Farm in Mazowe with his wife, Beatrice.

Majuru occupied a section of the farm in October 2020 saying he had been given an offer letter for a section of the property by the lands ministry. An interim order granted in favour of Moyo on Monday reads:

Until a final decision relating to the rights of the parties can be made by this court under case number HC 290/20, or the return date of this application, whichever happens sooner, the state of occupation by applicants in respect of the remainder of Patterson Farm in Mazowe shall not be interfered with by the respondents, its employees or assigns.

Moyo lodged an appeal with the Supreme Court after High Court judge Justice Esther Muremba had dismissed his application.

Justice Muremba said Beatrice, who filed the founding affidavit, had no legal standing in the matter because the offer letter was issued to her husband.

Her lawyers disagreed, arguing that she was an applicant in the pending application for review and was entitled to “protect the integrity of an application in which she is a party.”

In the review application, Moyo and his wife are challenging the compulsory acquisition of their 623-hectare farm, which they bought for Z$6 million (US$105 400 at the time) from the government in 2002.

Moyo’s lawyer Advocate Thabani Mpofu, instructed by Chris Mhike, argues that the seizure of the farm is not only unlawful but also “motivated by extraneous reasons that are political and mala fide.”

Moyo fled to Kenya soon after the November 2017 military coup that overthrew then-President, Robert Mugabe. He said his life was in danger.

Mbappe scores as PSG beat Real Madrid 1 – 0

Mbappe scores as PSG beat Real Madrid 1 – 0. Kylian Mbappe scored a brilliant goal in stoppage time as Paris St-Germain beat 13-time Champions League winners Real Madrid in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

The France striker, linked with a move to Real in the summer, received the ball on the left from a clever backheel by Neymar, and got between two defenders inside the box before slotting through Thibaut Courtois’ legs to send the Parc des Princes wild.

It was a dramatic finish to a game that had looked set to end in frustration for PSG, especially after Lionel Messi saw his penalty saved just after the hour mark. The hosts had dominated possession but struggled to break down a well-organised Real defence that had limited PSG to one shot on target in the first half, when Mbappe saw a shot denied by Courtois’ legs.

But the introduction of Neymar, making his first appearance since November after recovering from injury, proved decisive. He caused Real a number of problems with his dangerous crosses and clever runs before providing the crucial pass for Mbappe to work his magic with seconds remaining.

The win will give PSG hope that they can head to Madrid on Wednesday, 9 March and get the result they need to keep alive their hopes of winning a first Champions League title. A successful audition for Mbappe
All the build-up to the game had centred on Mbappe and how the striker would perform in what appeared to be an audition against his future employers.

The 23-year-old is one of the best players in the world right now and has been in superb form this season, with his goalscoring prowess pulling PSG out of difficult circumstances a number of times.

Just a few days ago, he scored in the 93rd minute to secure a 1-0 win at Rennes in Ligue 1 – and once again he had the decisive impact in this game.

Real, to their credit, had defended superbly for so long, with their doubling up on Mbappe having largely limited his impact. But the introduction of Neymar in the closing stages gave the visitors an additional threat to deal with and in turn more space for Mbappe to cause problems.

There was relief for Real when Mbappe saw a shot from the edge of the area beat Courtois but bounce just wide of the far post late on but in the end he was not to be denied the match-winning moment.

The goal was Mbappe’s 22nd in another incredible season for the youngster and his performance will surely have only served to enhance Real’s desire for him to be leading their line next term.

Bernardo Silva scores a brace as Man City hammer Sporting Lisbon 5 – 0

Bernardo Silva scores a brace as Man City hammer Sporting Lisbon 5 – 0. As they have done for much of this season, City put on a majestic display to give themselves a surely unassailable advantage in a tie against what had been a buoyant and reinvigorated Portuguese champions.

Manchester City effectively sealed their progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a stunning last-16, first-leg demolition of Sporting Lisbon in Portugal.

Bernardo Silva was brilliant, silencing the boos that greeted every touch from him and City’s three other former Benfica players with his side’s second and fourth goals, the first a glorious half-volley following a corner.

In-form Riyad Mahrez was on the scoresheet again with a close-range finish awarded via VAR after a lengthy delay to assess if Kevin de Bruyne had strayed offside in the build-up, as originally ruled.

Phil Foden also added to his growing collection of cool, calm finishes in a relentless first half that shattered Sporting.

There was no let-up after the break, with Silva seeing a hat-trick headed goal ruled out for offside before he set up Raheem Sterling to curl in a lovely fifth.

The result equals the biggest winning margin in an away match in the Champions League knockout phase and gives City their joint biggest European away victory, level with the 5-0 win at Steaua Bucharest in the play-off round of this competition in 2016-17.

Sporting will travel to Manchester for the formality of the second leg on Wednesday, 16 March. “I am absolutely more than delighted,” said Guardiola. “We know how difficult it is, this competition. We were so clinical – arrive, goal, arrive, goal, arrive, goal. When it is like this it is difficult for the opponent.

“We defended well and got an incredible result but we have a duty as a manager and team to analyse how we performed, not just the result.

“We have to take care of the ball better. One of the rules I have is when you have the ball try to pass to someone in the same T-shirt. Today we lost the ball many times.

“The difference was that we were so clinical. Then it is difficult for the opponents and we have confidence. It is a dream, a perfect result, so good for the second leg but we can do better.”

City show their Champions League credentials
Pep Guardiola’s City remain a domestic behemoth, with a fourth Premier League title in five years now theirs to lose after taking 43 points from the past 45 available to leave them nine points clear at the top of the table.

In Europe, though, they are ravenous for a success that has so far eluded their expensively-assembled, uber-talented squad – their hunger only deepened by the 1-0 loss to Chelsea in last season’s final.

Such appetite was on full display in Portugal’s capital in a showcase of all that that is good about Guardiola’s team – effort, awareness, patience and precision combining to lay the foundation for untouchable attacking excellence.

Mahrez’s early goal – awarded after a very lengthy VAR delay – burst the bubble of the home side, who were then simply dismantled, most notably and painfully by a former employee of their fiercest rivals.

Silva is a magician of a footballer, doing the simple things relentlessly well but also making the ridiculously hard look routine.

Few players can rifle a rising ball in on the half-volley as he did in the 17th minute, with a dramatic cannon off the underside of the bar an aesthetic bonus.

“I always tell him ‘you are the perfect player‘,” added Guardiola. “With the ball he is more than exceptional, but I always say to him you have to score goals, go and win games, you have to have the ability to do it.

“He scored one of the best goals I’ve seen for the technique, for everything.

“This was his home town, and he loves coming back here. Of course he is a former Benfica player, so this was special for him tonight.”

In any other game, Sterling finding the top corner with a precise curling shot to go joint second with Paul Scholes on the list of leading English goalscorers in the Champions League with 24 would make more headlines. But not this one.

As a telling comparison of City’s growing authority, their efforts in Lisbon made them the first team to score as many as four goals in the first half of a Champions League knockout tie since Bayern Munich beat Barcelona 8-2 in the last eight en route to winning the trophy in 2020.

There was precious little Sporting could do to stem the tide, their fans left only to offer sporting applause to City’s brilliance as the goals rained in.

However, while teams have been blown away this season without ever laying a glove on City, Ruben Amorim’s side at least provided small glimpses of what they are about with short periods of neat passing and well-worked but ultimately fruitless openings down the flanks.

Sporting have made giant strides both on and off the field in the past two years to unite again after the training ground attack by hooligans in May 2018 and to once again compete for silverware.

As a sign of the progress made, their players left the field to applause, singing and twirling scarves from a loyal, appreciative support who stuck by their side until the very end.

As for City, last year’s final defeat still rankles and they may well never have a better chance to win it than this year.

‘A winnable competition for Man City’
Former England goalkeeper Rob Green, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live:

It is looking like this is a very winnable competition for Manchester City this season. What Pep had done is incredible, the way he has transformed the whole club.

They had success before but not to this level and you will see Man City fans who will say he is amazing even if he doesn’t win the Champions League. But, for him, it is there and he would love nothing more to go and win this competition.

Cristiano Ronaldo ends goal drought as Man United beat Brighton 2 – 0

Cristiano Ronaldo ends goal drought as Man United beat Brighton 2 – 0. Bruno Fernandes added a second as United broke from deep inside their own half in the final minute of injury-time. After a tepid opening period, Ronaldo struck six minutes into the second half.

Cristiano Ronaldo ended his six-game goal drought in sensational style as Manchester United beat 10-man Brighton at Old Trafford to move back into the Premier League’s top-four.

The Portuguese collected Scott McTominay’s pass before edging right of the Brighton defence and, with barely any backlift, sent a low shot curling beyond a static Robert Sanchez.

Three minutes later, Brighton skipper Lewis Dunk was sent off after VAR sent referee Peter Bankes to review the defender’s foul on Anthony Elanga.

Fernandes wasted a glorious chance when he failed to get past Sanchez with only the Brighton keeper to beat, before Ronaldo nodded an excellent chance wide of the far post.

It meant United breathed a sigh of relief when Jakub Moder’s speculative effort from the corner of the box bounced back off the bar with David de Gea beaten.

Brighton were still trying to salvage something from the contest when Fernandes struck with virtually the final kick. Jekyll and Hyde United
In his pre-match interviews, United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick spoke about his team needing to be more Dr Jekyll and less Mr Hyde. Sadly for the German, the first half had far more evidence of the latter, evil, side.

When United were pressed with any great intensity, they gave the ball away. Restored to the starting line-up ahead of Paul Pogba, Fred was one culprit when he delivered a straight pass intended for Ronaldo straight to Adam Webster, who was not much more than a couple of yards away.

But the Brazilian was not on his own. Indeed, as Ronaldo drove a free-kick in a promising situation at the end of that disappointing opening period into the wall, it was hard to think of a redeeming feature for the hosts.

They did create one decent chance, when Ronaldo’s backheel sent Jadon Sancho running into the box. But once Brighton keeper Sanchez had turned the England man’s shot away, the best bit of United play was De Gea’s excellent save to deny Moder’s header.

The boos that accompanied the half-time whistle were predictable and when Pogba emerged late after the break and missed the start of his warm-up, it appeared United’s shambolic evening would continue.

Instead, the Frenchman was on the touchline to join the applause as Ronaldo struck the crucial 51st-minute opener.

Ronaldo knew he should have had more goals, though, and kicked an advertising hoarding in frustration as a header from a corner went narrowly wide.

However, after an unsatisfactory period for both player and team as leads have been lost in three successive games, at least this time they were able to secure a much-needed victory.

Familiar losing feeling in Manchester for Brighton
Given they have now drawn two and lost 12 in 14 away games at Manchester United – and not won in 20 trips to face either City or United – the final outcome cannot have been a surprise to Brighton.

Yet, despite the scoreline and losing centre-back Dunk, there had to be an element of this being a missed opportunity for the visitors.

For long periods in the first half, they were by far the better side but, not for the first time, the lack of a potent finisher cost Graham Potter’s men.

Moder could not have done much more with the header that De Gea turned away, nor the shot that hit the bar.

But Yves Bissouma fired wide before the break when placed to do much better. Danny Welbeck then came agonisingly close to snatching a draw against his former club when he sent his header over from eight yards after being picked out by fellow substitute Tariq Lamptey in the final minute.

Nelson Chamisa to Launch By-election star Campaign at Zimbabwe Grounds. The event will be held at Zimbabwe Grounds, Highfields, Harare and will be addressed by Chamisa. The Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) led by Nelson Chamisa is set to launch its by-election campaign on Sunday, 20 February 2020.

The CCC rally comes eight days after both the ruling ZANU PF and the Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC-T both launched their by-elections campaigns in Epworth and Highfields respectively.

CCC has claimed recently that its election campaigns have been disrupted by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) while ZANU PF and MDC-T are allowed to conduct their programmes without molestation.

In a tweet on Tuesday evening, freelance journalist and award-winning filmmaker Hopewell Chin’ono suggested that the Government may attempt to frustrate Chamisa’s rally by crippling public transport. He said:

Mishikashika yose yanzi ngaibatwe. (All pirate taxis and omnibuses will be pushed off the roads). They are desperate to stop Nelson Chamisa’s rally where he will be launching CCC’s by-election campaign.

The idea is to immobilize the transport system so that prospective rally attendees won’t find transportation to get them there!

Yesterday, CCC deputy president Tendai Biti was arrested at Spar, Letombo, in Msasa/Greendale and taken to Law and Order Department at Harare Central Police Station before he was transferred to Rhodesville Police Station, a short distance from Harare Central Business District.

Following the intervention of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Biti was released without a charge. Biti was arrested while on a “meet and greet” campaign as he is the CCC candidate for Harare East constituency in the 26 March by-election.

Slik Talk talks about Minnie Dlamini’s Failed Marriage

Slik Talk drops his first video since 2021 and the money hasn’t made him a nice person. He goes on a ruthless attack on Minnie and Quinton’s failed marriage. I want to talk about how Minnie Dlamini divorces a simp and secures the bag. Minnie Dlamini, everybody knew that you were not going to last in that marriage.

“Everybody knew that you were not going to make it in that marriage. Minnie Dlamini, you have all the qualities of a returned soldier. Minnie Umdlalile. Not Minnie Dlamini, Minnie umdlalile – you finessed the guy.

“That’s what happened, you secure the bag and you finessed him. See Minnie Dlamini, you bet on the wrong horse. This man is the perfect guy on paper, he has money, his light-skinned and tall.

Slik Talk says Quinton couldn’t give Minnie Dlamini attention, which was the one requirement she required the most. This man could not give Minnie Dlamini the attention that she wants. The power couple vibe. He could not meet that requirement.

“This man is a shy beta male who doesn’t have the balls to speak on camera. Let’s be factual, he does not have the balls to speak on camera, and his shy. Nobody knows what he sounds like and nobody has ever heard him speak and Nobody even knows his real name.

Slik adds that Minnie Dlamini was never happy in that marriage. She chose money over happiness and the result is divorce.

“See Minnie Dlamini comes from the era of the It-Girls and that is a very lonely era. We see them, the Pearl Thusi’s the Bonang’s of this world. All of them are lonely, all of them are single because they come from an era where they were put on this pedestal and every guy has to meet that pedestal.

“Boity is with that light-skinned guy and we all know that is not going to last. Minne announced her divorce on social media through an official statement. In the last 2 years, our family has experienced incredible joy and devastating loss. During this time, we found comfort in knowing we had each other.”

“Despite our better efforts to absorb the changes in motion, the emotional burden and the post-traumatic distress of our individual loss outweighed our will. After months of separation and consultations with our family and a counselor, we have taken the decision to officially file for divorce. It further states that they will remain friends and business partners.

“Despite the end of our marriage and romantic relationship, we remain friends, business partners, and loving parents to our beautiful son. This was difficult to come to and even more heart-breaking to have to announce. In the wake of this news, we ask that you please grant us privacy during this difficult time.

Unathi get dragged in Minnie Dlamini’s Divorce

The country is going bananas after Minnie Dlamini announced that she and her husband Quinton Jones are headed for divorce. Instead of speaking about the matter and debating – like tweeps always do – her best friend Unathi Nkayi and former boyfriend Itumeleng Khune got dragged into it, and it became messy.

Today, TV presenter Minnie Dlamini announced that she and Quinton were headed to splitsville. This after 4 years of marriage and 2 years of challenges, the couple decided it’s best they just call it quits.

“In the last 2 years our family has experienced incredible joy and devastating loss. During this time, we found comfort in knowing we had each other.

Unathi Nkayi

“Despite our better efforts to absorb the changes in motion, the emotional burden and the post-traumatic distress of our individual loss outweighed our will. After months of separation and consultations with our family and a counsellor, we have taken the decision to officially file for divorce,” she continued.
Despite the end of our marriage and romantic relationship, we remain friends, business partners and loving parents to our beautiful son. This was a difficult to come to and even more heart-breaking to have to announce. In the wake of this news, we ask that you please grant us privacy during this difficult time.” she completed her statement.

In less than an hour, Unathi Nkayi, Khune and Somizi started trending and not for good reasons.

People dragged Unathi and labeled her “toxic” saying she is the cause of their divorce. Absurd right? Others mentioned Somizi saying marriages which are covered by Showmax always end in tears. That’s because his and Mohale’s union was covered by the streaming company.

Khune on the other hand is trending because some think he was still in love with Minnie. One tweep wrote. “Itumeleng Khune never recovered after breaking up with Minnie Dlamini and as a result he lost his position as the first choice goalkeeper for both Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana. This is for Kaizer Chiefs fans, Amakhosi Amahle.”

Kuda Musasiwa blasts socialites, Tatelicious, Madam Boss and Olinda Chapel

Businessman blasts socialites, Tatelicious, Madam Boss and Olinda Chapel. Harare-based businessman and founder of Fresh In A Box, Kuda Musasiwa, has cautioned opposition political activists against denigrating people who prefer to follow socialites such as Tatelicious Karigambe-Sandberg, Olinda and Madam Boss on social media rather than opposition political leaders.

Musasiwa said showing intolerance towards people who have a different perspective will be counterproductive as it will not win voters’ hearts and minds but instead, drive them away. Said Musasiwa:

There is no reality in which an election program will EVER get more views than Tatelicious Karigambe-Sandberg, Olinda, Madama Boss or Amai Titi.

Tatelious being an openly trans-woman has nothing to do with that fact. Joe Rogan gets more views than CNN. Acie Lumumba got more views than SAPES Trust.

Believe it or not, the average Tatelious viewer is far more sympathetic to the CCC cause than to ZANU PF. Insulting them and berating them will NOT win hearts and minds. It will further alienate potential supporters. People are Multidimensional.

If Tatelious, an openly trans-woman, was to offer to lead a conversation on voter registration and host opposition leaders to her followers, would the supporter be happy about that?

6K views vs 450 Views, believe it or not, is DEMOCRACY. No amount of cyberbullying and insults will change that. Musasiwa opined that for opposition politicians to increase their reach and attract citizens to their platforms, they need to have a paradigm shift.

He suggested that politicians should improve their content, widen their audience, have diverse conversations, accept divergent views and abandon their “holier than thou attitude”.

Leaked audio: ZANU PF plans to disrupt Chamisa’s star rally

Leaked audio: ZANU PF plans to disrupt Chamisa’s star rally. Several members of the ruling party could be heard planning to use ZANU PF Harare provincial structures to book Zimbabwe Grounds in Highfields where CCC leader Nelson Chamisa is scheduled to address his supporters.

Plans by suspected ZANU PF members to sabotage Citizens Coalition for Change’s (CCC) first-star rally in Harare on Sunday have been exposed in leaked audio. One of the officials from a ZANU PF WhatsApp group said:

Junta you are in the province (Harare). Why can you not let the District Coordinating Committee (DCC) do the job since it reports directly to Harare province? Let us follow party protocol. A woman suggested booking Zimbabwe Grounds if the Citizens Coalition for Change has not yet done so. She said:

There is no need to send someone. We just need to liaise with PISI (Police Internal Security and Investigation) officials and find out if the CCC people have booked the venues (Zimbabwe Grounds and Zororo Centre) already. If not then we can simply counter the booking and we are done!

A third person emphasised the importance of following party protocol but was fully supportive of the idea of booking Zimbabwe Grounds ahead of CCC, if possible. He said: I have another idea. I do not know if Mr Gomwe (Godwin – vice-chairperson Harare province) or somebody is here.

I am just thinking if it will work out or not. These people are saying Zororo Centre grounds behind the Zimbabwe Grounds. I am not sure if they have already made a booking of the Zimbabwe Grounds and the centre.

If they have not booked, we can simply go and make our booking ahead of them (CCC). Can we send someone to check if a booking has already been done? If not, then we can book for our own meeting to counter them.

But it is tricky to have our own meeting there because we have our big shots, so protocol has to be followed. Our party respects protocol. Let us get a green light from the bosses first. I believe Mr Gomwe is in this group so let us hear what he has to say.

Contacted for comment by New Zimbabwe on the ZANU PF plan to sabotage the opposition party’s rally, CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said: That is clear evidence that ZANU PF is in panic mode and scared stiff of the Yellow Machine. Nothing can stand in the way or an idea whose time has come.

Last Saturday ZANU PF launched its national by-election campaign at Epworth High School in Harare while the MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora also held a rally at Zororo Grounds in Highfields.

ZIMSEC O’ level markers threaten to strike over unpaid wages

ZIMSEC O’ level markers threaten to strike over unpaid wages. Some of the examiners who spoke to New Zimbabwe expressed frustration over the US$0.50 per script they are being paid and are considering downing tools.

Examiners marking the 2021 Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (ZIMSEC) Ordinary Level examinations have threatened to strike over outstanding allowances. They want ZIMSEC to raise the amount currently being paid to US$1.00 per script and then pay them in US dollars, not at the prevailing interbank rate as has been the case.

Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) secretary-general Robson Chere confirmed the complaints raised by some of their members who are marking the O’ Level examinations. Said, Chere:

Our members have made it clear that it would have been better if they were paid in hard currency not at the interbank exchange rate to augment the little they are already getting from the government.

We have received a number of complaints on this and we are hoping their calls for an increase are heard before they too go on strike as we do not want that to be the result at the end of the day.

ZIMSEC spokesperson Nicholette Dlamini told New Zimbabwe that she was not aware of examiners’ complaints, saying marking of exams was going on smoothly. She said: We have not yet received such reports; if there are examiners that are disgruntled they should raise them with relevant authorities so that we are able to deal with their grievances.

If they are disgruntled we do not know the manner in which they are disgruntled as all our marking venues have recorded that they have enough examiners to go ahead with marking.

Zimbabwe reopens land borders and also lifts maize import ban

Zimbabwe reopens land borders and also lifts maize import ban. The Government on Tuesday reopened all land borders and also lifted the ban on maize and wheat imports that was put in place after the country recorded a good maize harvest during the 2020/21 agricultural season.

Zimbabwe closed all land borders in 2019 to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus except for cargo transport, returning citizens and other authorised persons.

The reopening of the country’s borders was announced by Information, Publicity, Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa while addressing a post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare on Tuesday. Said Mutsvangwa:

In view of the continued decline in new cases and deaths coupled with a declining testing positivity rate that is indicating that the community transmission has gone down, all ports of entry be: reopened but ensuring that all the recommended COVID-19 prevention measures are adhered to.

All ports of entry have been opened. All persons entering Zimbabwe must have undergone a valid COVID-19 PCR [polymerase chain reaction] test not more than 48 hours from the time of their departure for Zimbabwe, and be fully vaccinated.

Those with booster shots have an entry advantage. The announcement comes after the Government recently relaxed COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, reduced curfew hours and opened schools.

Mutsvangwa said the wheat and maize import ban had also been lifted, with all import permits issued before this announcement now set to expire on 31 May 2021.

ZNFPC launches CONDOM distribution programme

ZNFPC launches CONDOM distribution programme. The week-long campaign was launched on Monday and started yesterday in Mzilikazi suburb and moved to Silwane Youth centre in Pumula suburb. ZNFPC is targeting to distribute 30 000 male CONDOMs and 5 000 female CONDOMs over this week.

The Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) is moving around Bulawayo suburbs distributing condoms as part of its S.e.xual Health and Reproduction campaign. According to the National Aids Council (NAC), female C0ND0MS uptake remains low in Bulawayo province.

The NAC 2021 annual provincial report shows that close to 3 million male C0ND0MS were distributed compared to only 90 000 in Bulawayo last year. Marketing and Communications Officer for Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council for Bulawayo and Matabeleland North Provinces, Mission Gwafa said:

People choose male C0ND0MS because of the social and cultural beliefs that make it a man’s duty to source C0ND0MS. And there is always a stigma around women who buy and carry around C0ND0MS.

Women depend on their male counterparts for C0ND0MS and even if they collect or buy them, they choose male condoms. Gwafa said this year’s condom distribution was targeting youths and they were moving around youth centres. He said:

The main aim is to empower people especially adolescents on s.e.xual rights and their choices in opting for safer s.e.x. And during the campaign, we will explore how the condom cuts across all HIV prevention strategies.

The program for youth centres will spread through the 15 youth centres in the western suburbs of Bulawayo where free services will be offered. The program aims to destigmatise condoms, empower young people to make the right choices on s.e.xual issues and improve access to quality free C0ND0MS.

We will also be offering free IUVD and free Sayana Press contraceptives to all eligible and needy women and girls of reproductive age. C0ND0MS are different from other contraception methods in that they provide dual protection against s.e.xually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV as well as unintended pregnancies.

Govt threatens to take further stern action against striking teachers

Govt threatens to take further stern action against striking teachers. Addressing reporters after Cabinet’s first sitting in 2022, Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Evelyn Ndlovu, has been instructed to deal decisively with the striking teachers.

The Government has threatened to severely punish teachers who have failed to report for duty since schools opened on 7 February citing incapacitation. Said Mutsvangwa:

Cabinet noted with dismay the reported absenteeism by some teachers and Headmasters. Of particular concern, is the alleged barring of some teachers from attending to their work as well as attendance by some teachers without delivering lessons.

The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education has been instructed to take stern action in consultation with the chairman of the Public Service Commission and the Ministers of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development; and Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare.

An appropriate statement on the matter will be issued by the minister soonest. Cabinet would like to commend those teachers who have continued to attend to their duties. The Government offered teachers and other civil servants a 20% salary increase and a few incentives but it still remains far below the poverty datum line.

Teachers are holding out for a US$540 salary, better working conditions and a reasonable COVID-19 allowance. More than 90% of the country’s teachers in public schools are said to not have been reporting for work in the past week, a development that prompted the Government to announce the salary increase. Reports indicate that more teachers are reporting for duty but are not conducting lessons.

Prophet T Freddy releases new song after r@pe charges acquitted

Prophet T Freddy releases new song after r@pe charges acquitted. The self-styled prophet titled the song “I Wanna Cry”. It was released on 14 February, barely a week after the clergyman was acquitted. Speaking during an interview with the Sunday Mail,

Goodness and Mercy Ministries (GMM) founder and leader Tapiwa Freddy has released a single that chronicles his trials as he dealt with rape and abuse allegations.  Freddy said:

I was so stressed before I won the case. I used to have sleepless nights over the matter. I have since composed a new track that consoles me each time I listen to it. I believe music can effectively heal wounds.

This is the second time Freddy has composed a song inspired by real-life events. A few years ago he released the song “Ndiri Kurwadziwa” (I’m In Pain) after his church building in Glen View was razed to the ground by the City of Harare.

Exactly a year ago we lost Zimdancehall icon Soul Jah Love

Exactly a year ago we lost Zimdancehall icon Soul Jah Love. Today marks exactly one year since we lost one of the greatest Zimdancehall artists of all time Soul Jah Love. Below is a narration of how his burial took place. Soul Jah Love died of diabetes after he failed to inject himself when he needed his shot.

After leaving his Msasa Park residence for Warren Hills around 9am, a journey that snaked through the neighbourhoods that he grew up in —Prospect, Adbernnie then Mbare — on arrival at the cemetery his coffin was taken from the hearse to the graveside, to be readied for burial.

But someone in the organising team must have forgotten that here was a liberation hero being laid to rest, hence certain protocols and procedures needed to be followed.

As a result, the coffin was taken from the graveside back to the hearse, to allow due protocol. That movement of the coffin from graveside back to the hearse, and then back to the graveside, was not flawless as the youths wanted a glimpse of the action.

And theories equally flew around.

Ghetto youths being just that, and that they made up the larger number of the crowd, their restlessness added to the chaos that was Soul Jah Love’s burial — as they all wanted a bird’s eye view, and given the numbers present, this was not a feasible feat.

With burial initially pencilled for 11am, the thousands — not hundreds — who thronged the cemetery, in complete defiance of Level Four lockdown measures, which restrict gatherings of mourners in excess of 30, made sure they will have a say in how Soul Jah Love was to be buried.

Quite often, they broke into song:

“Tipeiwo nguva yekuchema gamba redu,

“Sauro, gamba redu,

“Tipeiwo nguva yekuchema gamba,

“Sauro, gamba redu.”

And their excitement was both palpable and understandable, for here was their icon, their ghetto hero, their voice, their messenger — the first ghetto youth to get a gun salute — being laid to rest.

It is not often that Warren Hills is transformed into a potpourri of high-density suburbs, but yesterday, Soul Jah Love brought Mbare, Mabvuku, Mufakose, Kambuzuma, Highfield, Glen Norah, in fact, any Harare high-density suburb one can think of, together.

And some of them, for want or not, especially those from “his” home ground, Mbare, made the trek on foot. Yes, Mbare to Warren Hills on foot.

Probably except for those very close to the public address system, anyone who says they heard what Cde Oliver Chidawu, the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution (Harare), who was the guest of honour, said would be lying. For the youths wanted the funeral done according to the ghetto plan — more music than speeches.

If the crowds at the cemetery were disorderly, given that it was a hybrid of all ghettos, Mbare must take the cake for decently honouring their hero. They lined from OK Ardbennie, past the popular long-distance bus terminus right up to Mbare Police Station, to pay their last respects.

It was a befitting sight.
