ZIFA referee dragged to court

ZIFA referee dragged to court. Hardwork Mharira, who works at the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service, appeared at the Harare Civil Court, where he was accused of not looking after his two children. A local referee was last Thursday dragged to court for child neglect.

Mharira and his wife Tafadzwa are going through a divorce, which is pending at the High Court. Tafadzwa told the court that since Mharira filed for divorce, he stopped buying groceries and paying for the children’s education.

“Hardwork is using the pending divorce to neglect me and his children.

“I am applying for maintenance, pending the hearing of the divorce, because the children cannot suffer because their parents are not in good books,” said Tafadzwa. She claimed Hardwork had other sources of income.

“He can’t say he doesn’t have enough money when he has other sources of income. “He is a ZIFA referee and gets allowances each time he handles a local match and this income does not reflect on his pay slip “ she added.

Mharira claimed Tafadzwa’s claim was baseless. “I can manage to pay $7 000 for now, pending the High Court decision,” he said. Magistrate Judith Taruvinga deferred the matter to next Thursday.

Zinara employees arrested over $9m fraud. Twelve ZINARA employees at Shurugwi tollgate are set to appear in court after they were busted in a $9,8 million fraud syndicate.

The clerks were arrested over the weekend by officers from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, for allegedly creating fake tap cards they used to divert the money, into their own use.

The suspects have been identified as Moreblessing Dzimba, Phylis Mawere, Farai Mutamba, Cleopatra Chihweta, Ismeal Mudzamiri, Kelvin Magwiranhaka, Oleen Magumise, Agnes Ngara, Esnath Manda, Jackson Kazembe, Tanyaradzwa Samupanya and Masciline Mwenje.

It is alleged the clerks created the fake tap cards, which they gave to motorists to swipe using the online payment system passage, while they collected the cash for themselves. This comes after ZACC recently arrested two supervisors at the same tollgate, Lilian Svinurai and Peter Pikita, who are facing 234 counts of fraud, involving approximately $6,8 million.

This brings the total number of clerks arrested at the tollgate, since last year, to 21. ZACC spokesperson, Commissioner John Makamure warned that the long arm of the law will soon catch up with all clerks involved in such scams.

“ZACC remains unrelenting in fighting corruption in Zimbabwe and the Commission is warning perpetrators that the long arm of the law will soon catch up with them,” he said.

Drug addict abusing relatives. Musakiye and Barbra Samson approached the Harare Civil Court seeking a protection order against Godfrey Mhizha, 35. A Harare man has been abusing his aunt and uncle, whenever he takes drugs, a court heard.

Musakiye said whenever his nephew takes drugs, he starts to insult them. “We literally took care of him when his mother passed on but now he challenges me saying l should not tell him what to do because the house does not belong to me but my parents, who are his grandparents.

“If I buy my children some goodies, he takes them by force and if they ask him why, he starts to harass them, calling them names. “After taking his drugs, at one time he attempted to sleep with his aunt.”

Barbra, the second complainant, said: “He always insults me and also accuses me of killing his mother, who is my late sister. He also threatened to kill me countless times.”

Mhizha said he was not abusive but admitted to taking drugs. “I admit taking drugs, my aunt is the one who is abusive towards me because when she is drunk, she starts to insult me and my late mother. “She always tells me to go to my father’s relatives whom l don’t know, my mother’s family is all l have.

“At one time my cousin used my bedroom, which l inherited when my mother died, to sleep with her boyfriend there. “My room has traditional items that do not require such acts, those items are the ones that helped my uncle to get a job.

“As it stands, l don’t have a national identification card and l need assistance from them so that l can do things on my own.” Magistrate Sharon Mashavire ordered Mhizha not to harass his relatives and never to approach his grandparents’ house with the purpose of breaching peace.

Fan under fire for getting Riky Rick tattoo – PIC

Losing a loved one – or a star you adore – can make you do unconventional things to remember their memory. For one fan, that was tattooing a picture of his music idol: Riky Rick.

The late rapper reportedly ended his life last week Wednesday after a lengthy battle with depression.

But whilst a tattoo is a unique way to remember someone who has passed, many tweeps though this loyal fan had taken it to the extreme.

A tattoo of one fan’s tribute to the Boss Zonke hitmaker went viral over the weekend.

Whilst the fan was not named, an unrelated tweep shared a picture of it, posting: “A loyal fan just got this beautiful tattoo of the late Makhado. Rest in peace Riky Rick”.

But the permanent piece of art was not getting the reaction it was intended from tweeps.

“If I can’t put a tattoo of my own mother or father, how on earth can I even think of putting that of someone’s son on my body? Loyalty membership rather end, it ain’t me

“That’s a bit extreme don’t you think? I understand grieving but we now honoring people that take their own lives”

“This was unnecessary. I mean soon we’ll forget about everything…we’ve lost too many great people”

“It is better to honour someone when he is alive than when he is dead. When he was alive how many fans honour him?”

“I will never in my life tattoo some1 who is selfish on my body”

Young artists shine at the NAMA awards

Young artists shine at the NAMA awards. The awards, which catered for work produced between 2020 and 2021, saw young artists walking to the winners’ podium to collect gongs. Man-of-the-moment Nutty O bagged two gongs for the Outstanding Male Artist and Outstanding Album (Mustard Seed).

This aptly sums up the calibre of winners, who dominated the 20th National Arts Merit Awards ceremony, at the Harare International Conference Centre, on Saturday. The chanter recently won three awards at the 2022 PPC Zimbabwe Music Awards.

His triumph is proof that the new crop of young artists are now running the game. This new wave should come as a wake-up call the old school artists, who have either fallen by the wayside, or sunk into oblivion.

Chanter Jah Master also won a gong in the Outstanding Song of the Year award although some queried his triumph. As expected, Janet Manyowa, whose career continues to rise with each passing day, had a memorable night after winning the Outstanding Female Musician award.

Meanwhile, the event organisers did a sterling job in putting together a memorable show that will remain engraved in the memory of many. Unlike the 2022 PPC ZIMA awards, which failed to live up to expectations, the Nama organisers put together what can easily pass as the best show of the week.

Although there is still room for improvement, the coordination of the event was superb, from start to finish. It was also clear that they had done their homework as the service providers of the night got it right.

Meanwhile, guests were treated to breath-taking performances by Nutty O, Mbeu, Mambo Dhuterere, Janet Manyowa, The Unveiled Group, Minister Mahendere and Nyasha David among others.

The choreography was exceptional, befitting the event where artists who excelled were honoured. Like any other event, some of the nominees left home disappointed as they expected to win big. There are also big names who missed the winners’ podium, where the young blood dominated, a clear indication they need to reinvent the wheel.

Sad news as poachers kill White Rhino in Bikita, one of the rarest creatures. Poachers shot and killed an endangered white rhinoceros and harvested some of its body parts before burying the carcass in a pit in Bikita, Masvingo Province on Sunday last week.

ZRP national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incident, saying two bullet heads were retrieved from the carcass after it was cut open. The poachers covered the carcass with black polythene plastic and some tree branches. Said Nyathi:

The ZRP is investigating a case of poaching which occurred in Bikita, where a white rhinoceros carcass was found slightly buried in a pit approximately 1.5 metres deep with some body parts missing…

Two gunshot wounds were noted on its shoulder and two bullet heads were recovered from the shoulder after it was cut open. In an unrelated incident, Police in Victoria Falls arrested Leonard Ndebele (36) for unlawful possession of raw ivory.

The suspect was arrested on 21 February after detectives received information to the effect that the suspect was in possession of ivory which he intended to sell in Victoria Falls.

Police made some follow-ups leading to the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of two elephant tusks, weighing 37.86kgs, which the suspect hid in the bush.

Nelson Chamisa Press Conference: ZANU PF far worse than Rhodesian regime

Nelson Chamisa Press Conference: ZANU PF far worse than Rhodesian regime. Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa says the violent attack on his supporters by ZANU PF activists during a campaign rally in Kwekwe on Sunday is provocative and intended to plunge the country into bloodshed and instability.

Speaking during a press conference in Harare on Monday, Chamisa warned that suppressing young people through violence will be counterproductive as it would sow the seeds of instability.

Chamisa said the ZANU PF-led Government is worse than the Rhodesian regime because, unlike the latter, which was a racist white minority cabal, the former oppresses its own people. He said: No amount of threat nor intimidation will save our youths. Is this not the same suppression under Smith that gave birth to the liberation idea?

CCC Presser

All the war veterans of our liberation struggle and the entire crop of leaders in govt today were the same age (18 to 30) as the youths that they brutalized in Kwekwe last Sunday and are brutalizing across the country. Their only crime is seeking the right to self-determination through peaceful campaigning and peaceful elections.

Chamisa warned ZANU PF against emulating Ian Smith’s oppressive Rhodesian regime saying this will make the situation worse. He said: They’re closing all channels for healthy political discourse, healthy deliberative and conversational politics.

This is the same brutality Zimbabwe experienced from under Ian Smith Regime, except, in this case, ZANU PF is by far worse than the Rhodesian regime in that it brutalizes its own people, 42 years after it failed to deliver independence, freedom and prosperity.

The War of Liberation was an answer to an unrelenting and repressive regime that considered the people of Zimbabwe as being less human, and mere pests to be exterminated.

Chamisa also castigated ruling party officials for making “reckless and thuggish utterances” that fan “the fires of hate and intolerance”.

On Saturday, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga said it’s a matter of time before ZANU PF crushes the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) “like lice” to prevent the opposition party from winning elections and attaining control of the State.

Chiwenga made the remarks while addressing ZANU PF supporters at a campaign rally in Kwekwe at Mbizo Stadium, a day before ZANU PF activists murdered a CCC supporter at Mbizo 4 Shopping Centre.

The Zimbabwean Republic Police (ZRP) is reported to have barred two South African artists Cassper Nyovest and Naak MusiQ from performing yesterday.

This was confirmed by Zimcelebs’ Instagram page.

The gig was slated for Bulawayo at Hockey Stadium with Amapiano duo Reece Madlisa and Zuma expecting to grace the event.

Currently, the details of what happened at the Hockey Stadium and the reason why the ZRP was forced to shutdown the Doc Shebeleza hitmaker Cassper Nyovest and NaakMusiq’s gig are not yet known.

This also happened last year when the ZRP stormed and forced Major League, twin brothers, Bandile and Banele to shut down their gig in Borrowdale.

Banile and Banele where also headlined to perform in Bulawayo and this never happened following the incident, forcing them to return to South Africa promising to comeback with a free gig.

Cassper Nyovest and NaakMusiq are set off for a boxing match pegged on the 9th of April this year at Sun City in South Africa.

The duel of Nyovest and NaakMusiq was announced just after the [Nyovest] bashed the YouTuber SlikTalk in a match dubbed ‘Fame vs Clout’.

Despite being knocked out, the YouTuber SlikTalk pocketed a R100k cash prize.

In confirming their fight, NaakMusiq took it to his Twitter handle where he posted:

The weird fight between Tsibip and Slik Talk last night. Anyway…8 April Sun City! I’m not gonna talk too much, sizobona nge mini enkulu.. #NaakVsCass #NaakOUT

Cassper’ response was:

Lol…. Weird fight? I’m already loving the trash talk from my next punching bag!!!! See you at Sun City!!! Remember, this is Boxing and not Mr Olympia or Muscle Mania!!!! I’d love a challenge this time so make sure you’re ready !!! #NaakVsCassper

Nyovest is one of the most celebrated South African artists down in Zimbabwe for he hosted a couple of gigs in both cities, Harare and Bulawayo leaving the fans asking for more.

Also Nyovest is hailed for his collaboration with the late Zim artist Cal-Vin on a track entitled Z’khuphani which became a ghetto anthem.

Cal-Vin died following a hit-and-run accident in his hometown Bulawayo.

Jesse Marsch appointed Leeds United head coach

Leeds United have named former RB Leipzig boss Jesse Marsch as their new head coach.

The 48-year-old has signed a deal at the Elland Road club until June 2025.

Marsch, who has also coached New York Red Bulls and Red Bull Salzburg, left the German club in December last year after a five-month spell.

The American will succeed Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa, who was sacked on Sunday, once a work permit is finalised.

Leeds sit 16th in the Premier League table, two points above the relegation zone, after a run of heavy defeats.

“It’s something I’m really excited about,” Marsch said. “I know what a big club Leeds is, I know ex-players who have played here and I’ve watched this club from afar for many years and I’m really honoured and excited to be here.”

He added: “How [Bielsa] has helped transform Leeds United into a Premier League team is pretty amazing.

“For me, I just want to help take the torch to the next phase. Everything that has been done has laid an incredible foundation and, coming in at this moment, I want to do everything I can to take the club into the next stage of our history.”

Leeds United director of football Victor Orta said: “We are delighted to welcome Jesse to the club and excited for him to lead us into this new chapter.

“Jesse is someone we identified a number of years ago during his time at Red Bull Salzburg and we believe his philosophy and style of football aligns with that of the club and will suit the players very well.

“We have a long-term plan and firmly believe he can take Leeds United to the next level and are excited for what the future holds.”

After leaving Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls in 2018, Marsch first joined RB Leipzig as Ralf Rangnick’s assistant before being appointed at RB Salzburg in June 2019.

He enjoyed a successful spell in Salzburg winning a league and cup double in his first season.

He was also part of the development of striker Erling Braut Haaland before the Norway striker joined Borussia Dortmund in 2019.

He then returned to Leipzig in April last year, this time as head coach when he took over from Julian Nagelsmann who left to manage Bayern Munich.

Marsch, who had been linked with the managerial vacancy at Celtic in the past, completed his Uefa Pro Licence in Scotland.

Former Swansea Under-23s coach Cameron Toshack, son of ex-Wales and Real Madrid manager John, is expected to be appointed as Marsch’s assistant.

Leeds United chief executive Angus Kinnear added: “We are really pleased to have quickly secured the services of our first-choice head coach.

“Whilst the short-term objective for Jesse is obvious, we believe he has the courage and ambition to build on the strong foundations we have created over the last four years and elevate the performance of the club over the long term.

“He had a great deal of success with New York Red Bulls and Red Bull Salzburg and has demonstrated during our many meetings that he is a great fit with the footballing culture of Leeds United.”

So Cassper wasn’t lying when he said his partner and the mother of his child Thobeka Majozi was richer than him in an interview.

Fans have always been curious about how much she is really worth as she doesn’t like to flaunt her wealth.

Over the weekend she gave us a glimpse into her life, posing next to a white Mercedes Benz SUV which fans believe belongs to her. The car comes up a lot whenever Cassper shows off his fleet.Thobeka Majozi1

This afternoon Thobs took some time off from her motherly duties to catch up with a friend.

She did admit that she enjoyed her short break from mom duties.

“Guys don’t get me wrong I love my baby, but this weekend he took me to a whole different level of motherhood because…” She said in a video shared on her Instagram stories.

In an interview with Slikour Cassper it took a while before Thobeka gave him a chance. He was a player at the time.

“l was a player at the time, l had a lot of girls around me, I am a celeb, l have money and l am funny so girls loved that. I had to pursue her and it took a long time for her to hear me out. She was not excited about my money. She is from a good family and is probably richer than l am,” he said in part.

In an interview on The Banques and Venom show in 2021 Mufasa revealed how lucky and blessed he feels to have Thobeka in his life.

“I’ve got so much respect for Thobeka. I’m so-so lucky… I was blessed with such a real one besides all the bullsh*t of the industry and some of the sh*t that they have to get accustomed to just because of me and my lifestyle and what I do and people being so interested in our family. And also people don’t like seeing people happy,” he said.

In the interview, he also explained why they choose to kept their relationship out of the public eye.

“We have something that they don’t understand and they don’t know about, we don’t post about. When we’re together we’re together. No-one knows… our living arrangements they just see when it’s good, it’s not perfect but it’s good and it’s strong. I have so much respect for her because she goes through so much.”

A couple of months back Mac G claimed that Cassper’s baby mama Thobeka Majozi allegedly had an affair with Andile Mpisane. That’s not all, he also went on to say that Cassper Nyovest had an affair with Kamo Mphela – who according to the podcaster, also slept with Andile Mpisane.

Responding to the claims Cassper tweeted: “Nobody cares anymore. People just say and do things for traction. It’s wild. I fear for the ones we are raising. The ones we have to teach. What will they learn from us?”

News365.co.za reported about Riky Rick‘s friend not knowing about his death since he was in Big Brother Mzansi house where housemates were not told about the sad news. This is because Big Brother cuts housemates completely from the outside world and they do not have access to cell phones, televisions, radios, or anything that keeps them in tune with what is happening outside the house.

The Saturday night party in the Big Brother house plunged viewers into sadness, as the guest, DJ Capital, played Riky Rick’s music. The housemates, oblivious to the fact that Boss Zonke is gone, erupted in joy and sang along to his verses.

South Africans who were watching Big Brother Mzansi on the night came to Twitter to express their pain.

However, now that Vyno is out of the house after being evicted on Sunday, he is to experience the pain of losing his friend. He has expressed his shock after sharing a few touching words on social media:

Riky you live on! I’m really rocked by this but God has the answers… can’t believe it… Love you forever,’ he wrote.

Don Mlangeni-Nawa

In the mix of things, the showrunners Endemol, the company that produced Isidingo, denied the claims. However, they did reveal in their statement that the actor didn’t respect the show even tried to call the shots whilst he was an actor.

Moshidi Motshegwa

The seasoned actress was axed from The River after taking a swipe at the fellow cast as bad actors. However, she was dumped in the eleventh hour and struggled to find her feet again in the industry despite being a big name. Moreover, she refused to take some lines from her script, making it hard for showrunners and other fellow casts.

Mpumelelo Bhulose – Imbewu: The Seed

Mpumelelo Bhulose

The celebrated actor was fired from Imbewu: The Seed for not showing up on set and not following directives of showrunners. Of late, he has been reported as one of the actors hard to work with. In the mix of things, bad behaviour has seen him struggling to secure gigs. Despite being the face of the show, we can all agree that his on-screen Zimele Bhengu was short-lived in Ombewu.

Police finger Zanu PF in CCC Kwekwe violence

$

0

Police have accused the ruling Zanu PF party of perpetrating the weekend violence in Kwekwe which left two opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporters dead and 17 others injured, with eight in critical condition.

The Zanu PF activists, carrying machetes, spears and other weapons, reportedly disrupted CCC party leader Nelson Chamisa’s speech before assaulting his supporters at a rally held at Mbizo 4 shopping centre in the Midlands city on Sunday.

Police arrested 16 suspects, among them Zanu PF card-carrying youths, in connection with the murder of CCC member Mboneni Ncube (30), who was stabbed with a spear during the skirmishes.

Ncube died on admission to Kwekwe Central Hospital.

The Zimbabwe Peace Project yesterday said two people died from the violent attack.

“Machete gangs suspected to be aligned to Zanu PF attacked a rally that was being addressed by CCC president Nelson Chamisa, killing two and seriously injuring others who are admitted in hospitals around Kwekwe,” ZPP said in a statement.

“Several machetes were recovered in the cars the suspects were using. The incident, which happened in what is believed to be the home ground of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, a day after he addressed a rally that had police protection, paints a dark picture of the politics of the country and should be condemned, and police should investigate and ensure the law takes its full course.”

A police internal memorandum from the Kwekwe Criminal Investigations Department named four of the 16 as Edmore Shoshera (30), Perscy Mukwaturi (38), Sydney Samanyayi (29), and Albert Maketo (29), who were identified as Zanu PF cardholders.

The other 12 were listed as unemployed youths.

Police also recovered a machete, a knife, a scale, and two caps that were inscribed “ED” from the accused persons’ cars.

Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi yesterday confirmed the arrests.

Police have also launched a manhunt for Kennedy Simbi, who is believed to have stabbed Ncube to death.

According to the police, Chamisa was addressing the rally when the Zanu PF youths, who were wearing yellow T-shirts and had infiltrated the crowd, attacked the CCC supporters.

Ncube was stabbed thrice with a sharp object on the back and he died at Kwekwe Central Hospital, where other injured persons were also admitted.

“Police reacted to the scene and got information that the accused persons were hiding at Jessie Gardens, Mbizo 11, Kwekwe, which is about 1km from the venue where they raided accused persons,” read the police memo.

“Three motor vehicles were recovered at Jessie Gardens, where the accused were hiding. Searches were made in a silver Mercedes-Benz, registration AFK 6858 owned by one of the accused, Perscy Mukwaturi.”

But Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa yesterday disowned the youth and accused the police of working in cahoots with the opposition party to fabricate allegations against the ruling party.

“Social media is not the court of law. The police CID are clearly on a fishing expedition at the behest of CCC. (It is) just an irresponsible and unprofessional police office mostly heavily compromised. Murderers and violence mongers can wear any badge. Who knows, the party card could even have been planted,” Mutsvangwa told NewsDay yesterday.

“One more infantile gimmick by Chamisa and his ilk that is prone to faking abductions. These lies have not yielded power in two decades of ill-fated MDC-CCC politics. Come March 26 by-elections and 2023 national plebiscite, they will be out of power as Zimbabwe voters are not ever ready to be fooled.”

Zanu PF director for information Tafadzwa Mugwadi claimed vindication, tweeting: “We are vindicated. @Police Zimbabwe are doing a tremendous job in arresting culprits over Kwekwe violence. I hope that all those who incited violence through their recorded utterances calling for youths to revenge are brought to book as well. Amos Chibaya and (Happymore) Chidziva must face the law.”

Addressing a Press conference in Harare yesterday, Chamisa applauded the police for carrying out their duties “professionally” in investigating the Kwekwe violence.

The CCC leader described the police as “one of the best policing authority in the world”, who were often hindered from effectively performing their duties by political interference.

Chamisa said the opposition party was informed well in advance of the Zanu PF plots to disrupt his rallies.

He said the police had also been notified of the plan, but failed to act swiftly to stop the violence.

“The intention was to make sure that we did not address the rally. We appreciate the police, if what I have read is anything to go by, for their professionalism. Yes, we are not happy with what they did to us in Gokwe (on Saturday), but the fact that they have managed to investigate and certain people have been arrested, we must give kudos where they are due,” Chamisa said.

“We understand how politics is poisoning effective policing. Those who masquerade as police, beating up people must be flushed out and exposed. Our police keep doing what is good, not the bad that we have seen in Gokwe or elsewhere, where you are chasing the citizens who are your masters. Your salary comes from these citizens, respect their rights,” he said in reference to his Gokwe campaign rally which was disrupted by police on Saturday.

Minister Chitando fails to defend mine grab

Mines minister Winston Chitando on Thursday failed to depose an opposing affidavit in a case where he is being accused of grabbing businessman Yakub Ibrahim Mohamed’s gold mining claims in Mberengwa district, Midlands province.

Chitando stands accused of grabbing gold claims owned by Mohamed’s firm, Anesu Gold, and transferring them to Gold Reef Mining, where he was a shareholder.

In the High Court application, Mohamed claimed that Anesu Gold is the registered owner of the claims which are also referred to as Mangoro claims (Ipanema).

Chitando’s lawyer Lovemore Madhuku failed to depose an opposing affidavit to rebut the allegations when he appeared before High Court judge Justice Rogers Manyangadze.

The other respondent, Golden Reef, was represented by Welshman Ncube.

Ncube argued that Anesu Gold had failed to establish a locus standi in its founding affidavit.

“It is respectfully submitted that applicant, having been previously challenged on its locus standi, in previous cases between the parties, particularly case numbers HC7497/20 and HC33/21, had an obligation to plead its locus standi in the founding affidavit by explaining how it has the locus standi to vindicate rights which on the face of it belonged to a company known as Start Mining Services,” Ncube submitted.

In his application, Mohamed submitted that the mining claims were previously registered in the name of Start Mining Services (Pvt) Limited, but at the material time, they were owned by and/or registered in his company name.

He said in 2018, invoices were sent to Start Mining Services to pay mining fees for the mining claim, but it failed, leading to forfeiture.

But Gold Reef argued that Mohamed and Anesu Gold had no legal right to bring the case before the courts, adding that there was nothing illegal about Chitando being a director of Golden Reef Mining.

Zanu PF activists block PVO Amendment Bill hearing

$

Proceedings of the proposed Private Voluntary Organisation (PVO) Amendment Bill Monday ended prematurely in Highfields, Harare after a provocative attack by suspected Zanu PF activists who disrupted the public hearing.

The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) highlighted the proceedings ended prematurely because of suspected rowdy Zanu PF activists who were seeking to dominate the public hearing.

“The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition witnessed the violent disruption of the PVO Amendment Bill public hearing in Highfields, Harare on February 28, 2022. The public hearing ended prematurely after Zanu PF activists, who were seeking to dominate the event, disrupted the proceedings,” the CiZC said.

It then urged the ruling Zanu PF government to be rational and to exercise tolerance of divergent views.

“The coalition condemns violence of any nature and notes that such acts are likely to compromise citizens’ participation in these public hearings and ultimately lead to a flawed process. We deplore the violent nature by Zanu PF activists and implore the ruling party to exercise tolerance of divergent views.

“We reiterate that amendments to the PVO Act are part of efforts to close the democratic space in Zimbabwe and citizens must unite in rejecting these amendments which will curtail fundamental freedoms and entrench authoritarian rule,” said the Coalition.

The CiCZ also dismissed allegations of offering an initiative of US$15 each as a bribe for citizens to go and register to vote.

“On another note, we dismiss with contempt, malicious allegations by a Zanu PF activist during the public hearing that the coalition is offering an initiative of US$15 (each) for citizens to go and register to vote,” the Coalition added.

According to civic society groups (CSOs), the proposed PVO Amendment Bill is a ploy by the government to silence them as they stand. PVOs are public-benefit bodies or associations of persons or institutions that carry out humanitarian and charity work or provide legal aid. The PVO Amendment Bill was gazetted in November 2021 and seeks to amend the PVO Act, but CSOs have raised concerns that the suggested amendments will restrict their work and violate human rights while negatively affecting communities who depend on their work.

Among other things, the PVO Amendment Bill imposes ‘unfair’ restrictions on CSOs and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) by proposing harsh penalties, including jail time of up to one year for NGO registration framework-related perceived offences, a new requirement that the Bill seeks to introduce.

An elderly Chinhoyi man who was in the habit of waylaying his 11-year-old granddaughter en route from school and repeatedly raping her has been jailed for 15 years.

Toro Manga (65) of Fiona village, Chinhoyi was convicted of rape when he appeared before regional magistrate Ignatius Mugova at Chinhoyi Magistrate’s Courts.

The complainant is the accused person’s granddaughter and was a Grade 4 pupil at a local school during the time the offence was committed.

The court, led by Nyasha Sibesha, heard that sometime during the period extending from September to 30 November 2021, Manga would waylay the complainant as she walked home alone from school.

He would drag her into a bush and rape her before threatening to inflict harm if she disclosed the matter to anyone.

It was further averred in court that on November 2 last year, the complainant developed a rash on her genitals and informed her mother of the illness.

Following some investigations, the s.e.xual abuse was exposed on December 7, leading to Manga’s arrest by the police.

The complainant was medically examined at the Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital where an affidavit confirming the s.e.xual assault was compiled.
