Kwaito star Zola 7 bounces back

Legendary Kwaito musician Bonginkosi Dlamini popularly known as Zola 7 has been making tabloid headlines and trending on social media after a video of him surfaced all over the internet with the ex-host of the successful Zola 7 show looking unwell. Many industry colleagues started showing support with some even making contributions towards Zola 7’s wellbeing and financial state.

These videos started circulating online after it was reported by a local publication that the media personality had been suffering from a chronic illness since 2018. The publication reported that Dlamini had been diagnosed with chronic epilepsy three years ago in 2021 and has been suffering from this illness in silence.

Industry friends of Zola 7 and fans started showing love to the Guluva with many offering to show him love, while others contributed towards his well-being in materialistic objects and some financially. Mamkhize was one of the few celebrities who reached out to make Zola 7’s days a little much brighter.

The businesswoman and football mogul came through and made one of Zola 7’s dreams, which was to drive a Bentley in his life, come true. Shauwn Mkhize shared to social media a video of her and Zola hanging out like good old friends in her car outside her home as she went to take Zola for a spin in one of her luxury cars.

After this video, rumors started resurfacing with people on social media making claims that MaMkhize had donated R1 Million to Zola 7. Dlamini and his team have since released an official statement on the artist’s Instagram page denying these rumors.

Part of the statement read, “We request that the Media kindly report only truth that is verified to avoid spreading false information. Zola has not received any millions / million from any funder as widely alleged / spread,” the statement read.”

But this was evidently not an attack on MamMkhize, as Zola has continued to show nothing but love and appreciation to her.

This week Zola dropped by on Metro FM during the debut of MoFlava and Khutso Theledi’s breakfast show, Wake Up On Metro, and showed gratitude and appreciation to individuals that have continued to support him. He mentioned that a lot of people had been making kind contributions and helping make him afloat. He added that he had received a sheep that he’s now keeping as his pet.

Earlier yesterday, we saw Zola 7 receiving what many assumed to have been a pro bono haircut from Sheldon Tatchell’s famous salon, Legends Barber, making the musician look younger and fresher.

But to date, Zola 7 looks like he is steadily coming back to business as his brainchild, the Strictly Kwaito Legends Festival made its comeback at the Bears Palace in Mpumalanga this past Saturday. It was also reported that the event is dedicated to, with all its proceedings also to be donated to Zola 7.

In a recent Tweet, Zola 7 shared that he’d been overwhelmed by the love he received in Mpumalanga.

West Ham 2 – 1 Everton

$

West Ham moved up to sixth in the Premier League with a win over 10-man Everton, a result that keeps the Toffees in relegation trouble.

Aaron Cresswell scored a wonderful free-kick to open the scoring for the hosts when he curled the ball past England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford at London Stadium.

But Everton, without an away league win since 28 August, started the second half brightly as Dominic Calvert-Lewin struck the angle of post and crossbar before Mason Holgate’s well-controlled half-volley made it 1-1.

However, they were only level for five minutes. Michail Antonio burst clear of the Everton defence and his shot was blocked by Pickford but the rebound fell to Jarrod Bowen, back in the side after recovering from a fractured foot, and he steered the ball into the unguarded net.

Things then got worse for the visitors when captain Michael Keane was sent off midway through the half for his second bookable offence, following his second late challenge on Antonio. There was no way back for the visitors after that.

Everton is 17th in the Premier League, three points clear of 18th-placed Watford. On Wednesday they face a vital game at Burnley, who are 19th.

The Hammers have never played in the Champions League and are now three points behind Tottenham in fourth – the last qualifying spot. Spurs, who beat Newcastle 5-1 later on Sunday, have a game in hand while fifth-placed Arsenal have played three games fewer than the Hammers.

This result continues a hugely impressive season for David Moyes’ side, who face Lyon in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday with Barcelona a potential semi-final opponent if they get there.

If they win that competition it would be their first European trophy since lifting the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1965 and would secure a Champions League spot, regardless of their final Premier League position.

At a packed London Stadium, Cresswell’s brilliant free-kick gave them the lead and they had chances to make it 2-0 but Pablo Fornals shot just over and Antonio, after rounding Pickford, could only shoot into the side-netting from a tight angle.

Those misses looked to have been costly when Holgate, a last-minute addition to the Everton side after Donny van de Beek was injured in the warm-up, superbly controlled a half-volley after Richarlison had nudged the ball into his path.

But only a few minutes later Everton’s Alex Iwobi lost possession, Antonio broke clear and Bowen scored the follow-up for his 13th goal of the season in all competitions.

The result continued a terrible run of form for Everton in matches played outside Goodison Park. Indeed, their total of six points from 14 away games this season is the lowest from any of the 92 sides in the Premier League or the EFL.

Their past two away games had seen them thrashed 5-0 and 4-0 by Tottenham and Crystal Palace respectively, with boss Frank Lampard challenging his side’s players to show their character after the second of those losses.

He will be pleased with how they started the second half and their equaliser but equally frustrated by the manner in which they quickly fell behind again and the dismissal of Keane after he had given Michael Oliver no choice but to send him off with a rash sliding challenge on Antonio when already on a yellow card.

Everton, who recently announced losses of £120.9m for the 2020-21 season, have played in English football’s top flight in every season since 1954-55, but they face a battle to keep that run going with 10 games of their season remaining.

Tottenham Hotspur 5 – 1 Newcastle United

Tottenham came from behind to comfortably beat Newcastle and moved up to fourth in the Premier League.

Antonio Conte’s side leap above north London rivals Arsenal on goal difference, but Mikel Arteta’s men have two games in hand including Monday’s trip to Crystal Palace.

It didn’t start well for the hosts as Magpies defender Fabian Schar curled in a free-kick on 39 minutes, though Hugo Lloris will be disappointed at not keeping the ball out.

Spurs responded on the stroke of half-time through Ben Davies’ glancing header from Son Heung-min’s sumptuous delivery into the danger area.

Immediately after the break, Spurs turned it around through Matt Doherty’s diving header from Harry Kane’s cross and they netted their third through Son’s clinical finish.

And it got even better on the hour mark when Emerson Royal poked in from close range following excellent build-up play by Doherty – and substitute Steven Bergwijn stroked in late on.

Newcastle had no answer and fell to their third consecutive defeat, leaving them 15th in the table but nine points above the relegation zone.

Spurs are beginning to find form at just the right time in the season, winning five of their last six games in the top flight. The only blemish came against a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Manchester United last month.

Boss Conte has had difficult moments during his tenure, questioning his players and his own capabilities, but his side showed their battling spirit to hit back against Newcastle and have now won 14 points from losing positions – more than any other Premier League team this season.

They should have opened the scoring but Eric Dier curled a free-kick wide and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg headed over from six yards out before the visitors struck.

Centre-back Schar stepped up to send his free-kick around the wall and although goalkeeper Lloris got good contact on the ball, he was unable to palm it out.

But Spurs managed to recover aided by the ever reliable Son, creating the first goal and getting on the scoresheet himself with a cool strike for his ninth goal in his last nine games at home.

Son’s goal was created by January signing Dejan Kulusevski, who continues to impress since his arrival from Juventus, while fellow winter acquisition Rodrigo Bentancur looks to be a pass master in the middle of the park, with an accuracy of 90%.

Both are spearheading Tottenham’s charge towards Europe’s elite competition with eight games left to play.

Bergwijn came on and ran through to net Spurs’ fifth and inflict defeat on Newcastle, whose form has dropped off after a run of nine games without defeat.

But that sequence of results may well be enough for Eddie Howe’s men to secure their Premier League status, with five further out-of-form teams battling it out for survival behind them.

Fan-favourite housemate Michelle ‘Mphowabadimo’ Mvundla was announced the R2 million winner of the Big Brother Mzansi reality TV show on Sunday (3 April) after Themba, Gash1, Libo, and Tulz received the least number of votes from #BBMzansi.

Mphowabadimo

Mvundla was announced the season three winner tonight (3 April) nine weeks after the commencement of the reality TV show.

Daveyton sangoma – Michelle ‘Mphowabadimo’ Mvundla walked away from her 71-day stay in the Big Brother Mzansi house with the grand prize of R2 million.

The reality show started on Sunday, 23 January with 18 participants – and in the end – five housemates Tulz, Mphowabadimo, Themba, Gash1, and Libo made it to the finale.

Mavundla’s fans titled The Underground Gang put her through to the finale after she was nominated for eviction week after week.

The 27-year-old mother of one won the hearts of South Africans with her laidback energy, and outgoing “zero tolerance’’ personality.

Viewers across the country became protective of her when she was often mocked for her spirituality by other housemates.

Fans also loved her honesty about her past, her passion for her calling, and admired her strength, positivity, and willingness to forgive and forget.

According to #BBMzansi, the competition has always been between Gash1, Themba, and Mphowabadimo – who had the majority fanbase.

Gash1’s fanbase – dubbed The Gashers and Themba’s fanbase – dubbed The Ghostnations saved them when they got nominated for eviction in previous weeks.

Viewers thought more deserving housemates such as Thato or Sis Tamara deserved to be in the final week over Tulz and Libo.

This is because Tulz has never faced eviction and Libo got saved by Themba when he won the ultimate veto power.

The veto power gave Themba the power to choose two housemates to take with him to the finale.

Water shortages hit Chipinge District Hospital

Chipinge District Hospital is experiencing a severe water shortage, raising fears of an imminent outbreak of diarrheal diseases at the health institution.

The water crisis at Chipinge District’s referral hospital has been caused by the constant breakdowns of the water reticulation system, worsened by a breakdown of one of the main water pumps.

The hospital and staff residents are supplied by one borehole and this has forced admitted patients’ relatives to bring them water for use.

A hospital staff member who declined to be named in the report told The Manica Post that the hospital’s system needs a complete overhaul to end the perennial water challenges. Said the worker:

The hospital’s water system needs a complete overhaul. We are struggling to get adequate water supplies at the hospital, mainly because of the ageing pipes which need a complete overhaul.

When we engaged the council, they told us that their role is to supply water to the main pipe and the water reticulation at the hospital is done by the Department of Public Works.

Assistant District Development Coordinator, Teddius Beto confirmed the water situation at the hospital and pleaded with stakeholders to help. Said Beto:

The hospital has been facing water challenges for a while and the situation is bad. We have been engaging all responsible departments to come on board and the situation has improved, although water is still in short supply.

We are appealing to various stakeholders to come on board and assist through water trucking, as well as the replacement of the hospital’s water pumps.

ZIMSEC Blames COVID-19 For Failure To Release O Level Results

The Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (ZIMSEC) has failed to release the 2021 Ordinary and Advanced Level results in time.

In previous years, the examinations body would release results in February, giving ample time for schools to enrol Lower Sixth pupils in the first term.

The first term ends on Thursday, 7 April 2022, with both “O” and “A” Level results for 2021 yet to be released.

The delay in the release of “A” Level results has forced some universities such as the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) and Midlands State University (ZIMSEC) to defer their intakes.

Speaking to NewsDay on Sunday, ZIMSEC spokesperson Nicholette Dlamini said the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the normal school calendar resulting in delays in the writing and marking of examinations.

Dlamini said the ZIMSEC board will release the results “soon”, but did not provide the exact date. She said:

The year 2019 was the last year we had the normal school year. This is 2022 that we are now having a normal school year.

If you look at 2021, the first term started in March and last year, the results came on April 23 and we haven’t reached the date.

Our examinations were written last year. They started in December and they finished on January 31, so according to the cycle and the timeline, we have not yet reached that. The results will be released soon.

Teachers’ unions have, however, cited a dispute between ZIMSEC and examination markers over allowances early this year as the major reason behind the delay in the release of results.

The sky is the limit for South African-born actress Thuso Mbedu. The young actress is not new to TV, however it was her outstanding performance in Amazon Prime Video’s “The Underground Railroad” and her several awards thereafter that boosted her international career to the next level – with almost everyone in Hollywood wanting a piece of the South African beauty.

Mbedu was nominated for an International Emmy award for her role in the local drama series “Is’Thunzi“ and although she didn’t walk away with the Emmy, it was that moment that fuelled the fire which led to her being one of the most talked about actresses on Hollywood’s lips.

Thuso Mbedu
Mbedu’s performance earned her several international awards which include, “TV Breakout Star” at the Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards, “Outstanding Performance in a New Series” at the Gotham Independent Film Awards and her most recent award, “Best Female Performance in a new Scripted Series” at the 37th Film Independent Spirit Awards held earlier this month in Santa Monica, California.
On the back of this, Mbedu has also secured a role in the historical drama, “The Woman King”, which is set to release in September and boasts a cast of brilliant actors like Viola Davis, John Boyega and Sheila Atim who also acted in “The Underground Railroad” alongside Mbedu.

The true story will look at the events that happened in The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries.
She also wore a Dior Haute Couture tweed peplum bustier, paired with a sleeveless black knit top and tweed trousers to the Film Independent Spirit Awards.

“We could not ask but meeting a man, dressed like a woman in a toilet reserved for women, scares us and even

Costa Rica: Ex-Finance Minister Chaves wins presidential vote

$

Right-wing former finance minister Rodrigo Chaves will take over as Costa Rica‘s new president on May 8 after winning Sunday’s election, poised to oversee the challenge of reinvigorating the country’s battered economy.
With 96 percent of the votes counted, Chaves held a close to six percentage point lead in provisional results over Figueres, the centrist former president, according to the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE).

“I receive with the deepest humility this sacred decision of the Costa Rican people… This result for me is not a medal or a trophy, but an enormous responsibility,” the 60-year-old economist said to a crowd of supporters in the capital San Jose. Figueres congratulated Chaves and wished him well in his concession speech.

“Costa Rica has voted and the people have spoken. Since we are democrats we respect that decision,” the 67-year-old said. Unemployment and an economic crisis dominated the campaign between two scandal-tainted candidates relieved not to have their past indiscretions take center stage. Chaves was once demoted for sexual harassment, while Figueres was previously investigated for corruption.

But with 23 percent of the population living in poverty and unemployment soaring to 14 percent alongside a series of corruption scandals, Costa Ricans seemed more focused on the economy as they elected the successor to President Carlos Alvarado.

Voting was carried out “in peace and tranquility,” said TSE spokesman Gustavo Ramon. Chaves will take over from the unpopular Alvarado next month, faced with the major challenge of reigniting an economy in crisis.

Costa Rica has been described as the “happiest” country in Latin America and praised for its political stability, environmental policies and eco-tourism. But the vital tourism industry was hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Alongside Peru, it suffered the largest fall in employment figures in the region between 2019 and 2020. Costa Rican society was not poor, they made it poor. Costa Rican society was not unequal, they made it unequal,” said Chaves, who voted in mid-morning at a school in the capital’s city center.

Drama: Zex Manatsa’s son surfaces after 38 years

$

ZEX Manatsa’s child, who was born out of wedlock, has surfaced and now wants to be identified with his real family.

The 38-year-old Givemore Kudakwashe Madziya (left in the picture) has since filed a change of surname notice as he seeks to be identified with his family.

Music legend, Manatsa, died in January aged 78.

However, Givemore says there was no bad blood between him and his late father, despite being raised by a step daddy.

“Waking up each and every single day knowing that my dad is there always gave me that extra strength to face life’s obstacles and also wanting to emulate him.”

“He was a role model to many, and he was to me, as well,” he said.

Asked why he decided to change his surname at 38, he said:

“In everything that we do, ours is only to make plans, but The Highest decides.

“Thus, it was not my decision to change my surname but I believe it was God’s decision.

“Besides, I have been a Manatsa since birth.

“It is now, where I am only making a correction of what might have been a mistake so that I re-discover the inner me.

“I cannot keep running away from my own shadow, my blood is Manatsa and I have to do what is right by carrying my true identity.”

Givemore said he was also on good terms with Manatsa’s other children with his widow Stella.

“Myself, Green, Aaron, Tendai, Freedom, Shingi and Taku, are the best of buddies.

“We are always in constant touch.

“Even the minute dad passed on, I was notified about the development, immediately.

“Also, even when dad was in hospital, I had all the updates regularly. Our bond with my brothers from another mother is unbreakable,” he said.

He, however, said he would not disclose the identity of his mother.

“My mom is a very reserved person, hence publishing her name might drag her into the limelight from the media.

“All I can say is that she is my number one role model and I am very proud of her,” he said.

Unlike most step children, Givemore said he salutes his stepfather for being there for him

“Growing up under the wings of my step dad helped me a lot into becoming the man that I am today.

“He was very supportive and did not segregate me from my other siblings (his kids). We were all treated equally and for that, I will always be thankful to him.

“He has a golden heart.”

He also said he was in touch with his father prior to his death.

“Many a time I would check on my dad’s deteriorating health through our eldest brother Green, since he was the one always briefing family members of latest developments with regards to his ailment.

“It was family protocol, in order to give the old man enough time to rest since it was essential at that moment.

“We all hoped dad would fight the battle and overcome it but, unfortunately, the Lord had other plans.”

He added,“We are seven boys and four girls, namely, Green, Aaron, Tendai, Freedom, Shingi, Taku, Givemore, Priscilla, Sarah, Memory and Joy.

“We all attended dad’s funeral except for our eldest sister Priscilla, who failed to travel due to circumstances which were beyond her control.

“Finally, here I am, now carrying my true identity. Man’s time is not God’s time….. There is a time for everything.”

His brother, Green Manatsa, said Givemore has always been part of his family.

“He is one of us and there is no way we can hide it. He made the right decision to change his surname because it is every child’s wish to be identified with his blood.

“We are always in touch and we do consult each other when there are family matters,” he said.

Ye and company beat out songs by Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow (“Industry Baby”), J. Cole and Lil Baby (“Pride Is the Devil”), Tyler, the Creator, YoungBoy Never Broke Again and Ty Dolla $ign (“Wusyaname”), Kanye West, The Weeknd and Lil Baby (“Hurricane”) and Doja Cat (“Need to Know”).

The song was also nominated in the Best Music Video category but lost to Beyoncé and her daughter, Blue Ivy, who won for “Brown Skin Girl.”

The 2022 Grammy Awards was originally set for Jan. 31 at the Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center) in Los Angeles but was rescheduled and moved to Las Vegas after COVID-19 Omicron rules were implemented in California. Comedian Trevor Noah returned to host the awards ceremony for the second year in a row.

The win marks the renowned producer/rapper/mogul’s 24th Grammy win among an impressive 80 nominations. Past wins include Best Rap Album for The College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, as well as Best Rap Song for “Jesus Walks,” “Diamonds From Sierra Leone,” “Good Life,” “Run This Town,” “All of the Lights,” and “N****s in Paris.

Congrats to Kanye, The Weeknd and Lil Baby for winning Best Melodic Rap Performance.

VIDEO: Heartless housemaid puts crying baby to sleep with her foot

In a world where thousands, if not millions of child abuse cases are being reported, you would think people have learned about things to do and not do concerning children, only to find out we really still have a long way to go with the abuse awareness.

MbareTimes.com has come across a saddening clip of an alleged housemaid abusing the baby who seems to be a year older. In the video, she can be seen putting her foot on the toddler’s face claiming how could she make use of her hands when she has feet for the job.

Chema, tinokutsika kudai oh, Precious, ku exerciser hutsinye kana munhu achichema. Unongomutsika kudai oh, oka zunguza zunguza zunguza kudai oh, kano nyarara. Ku exerciser hutsinye“, she says as she puts the baby to sleep.

It seems working as the poor baby keeps quiet and tries sleeping, once the maid sets her foot in her face. She continuously does it until the baby starts really crying before she finally sticks her big toe in her mouth in order to shut her up.

Watch the video:

However, when and where this particular incident took is not yet known.

Actor SK Khoza breaks silence on viral video

Mzansi star; former The Queen and Zabalaza actor Sthembiso “SK” Khoza is trending after a snippet video went viral on social media.

Khoza, who played Shaka in The Queen until late last year when he was axed from the cast, is seen in the video behaving violently towards a white man while also uttering profanities.

In the video, shot at Zebula lodge in Mpumalanga, the multi-award-winning actor is heard asking the man if he knows who he is. But speaking to the publication on Monday, Khoza said the video does not show the part where he was insulted.

“I was away with friends in Mpumalanga and the white man you see in the video was racist towards me, so I retaliated. He called me by the ‘K’ word,” said Khoza.

“It is funny how I always trend for the wrong reasons and never for the good that I do, and the great work that I produce. I am tired of all these stories that are made up about me. I was not on drugs, and I have never been.

He added: “I did not open a case because I do not have the energy to be in court, I have been to court for four months, because I was accused of hitting a woman when I did not. I am currently fasting on Ramadan and I am guarding my energy.”

In June 2021, the publication reported that Khoza was accused of hitting a cashier with a scanner at a petrol station in Johannesburg. As if that was not enough, Khoza was arrested in October after he allegedly beat up his partner in a domestic violence incident.

He was also in trouble after videos of him and friends dancing with half-naked girls during the Covid-19 hard lockdown trended on social media.

The series of these events led to him being axed from The Ferguson’s show, The Queen in November. It was reported that the actor was fired because he was facing accusations of assault, which he reportedly initiated.

Seven things you might have not known about Uzalo’s MaMlambo (Gugu Gumede)

$

Since its first episode was aired in 2015, Uzalo has been South Africa’s favourite soapie. The show is famous for its well-executed writing, the dramatic storyline, and of course, the talented cast.

If you are a fan of the SABC soapie Uzalo, you already know and are probably a big fan of Hlengiwe “MaMlambo,” a highly opinionated character. Contrary to her nature on TV, the actress who plays MaMlambo is a private and composed person in real life.

Here is everything you need to know about MaMlambo from Uzalo that will make you love her even more on TV.

She was born in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

gugu gumede

MaMlambo from Uzalo’s real name is Gugu Gumede. Gugu was born on 10th December 1991 in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Her parents were the late Simon Hulumeni Gumede, who passed on when she was young, and Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi, who passed on in 2021. Both her parents were respectable leaders in South Africa.

While her father was a senior leader for the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), her mother was the president of the National Freedom Party (NFP) and also served as a deputy minister for Science and Technology. Prior to that, she had been a member and chairperson of the IFP.

It is not clear how many siblings MaMlambo from Uzalo has in real life. In a past Instagram post where she paid tribute to her late mother, the actress only mentioned having a brother.

She studied in the US.

Before launching her acting career, Gugu Gumede studied acting in the US at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles.

She returned to South Africa in 2013 to a big start on the screens, and things have been getting better for this beautiful actress.

Gugu, who credits her exceptional performance as MaMlambo from Uzalo, is an advocate for studying acting. In 2020, she advised young people hoping to make it in the acting industry to take their time to study the craft, read books, and do research on the internet.

She also revealed that she was able to portray a wide range of characters because she studied her material and researched her character in depth.

She recently welcomed her first child.

Gugu Gumede

Gugu Gumede,credit: Instagram

On March 24, 2022, after a much-hyped pregnancy, Gugu Gumede gave birth to her first child- a daughter.

It is not clear who the father of Gugu’s child is since the actress keeps a really low profile when she is away from the screen.

It is also unclear whether she is married or dating.

Is MaMlambo leaving Uzalo?

Prior to giving birth, there had been a lot of speculations that Gugu Gumede was leaving Uzalo. In January 2022, stories circulated that Gugu was leaving the show to continue with her late’s mother legacy in politics.

It appears that the reports were nothing more than rumours, and as of now, Gugu is still MaMlambo from Uzalo.

She is a staunch Christian

One thing that Gugu Gumede is never shy about expressing is her religion. The actress is said to be a born-again Christian.

She made an appearance in Generations.

Before her famous role as MaMlambo on Uzulu, Gugu Gumede had a role on Generations as Mandisa, a role which she landed shortly after her return from the US.

She is a member of the NFP

In 2021, Gugu Gumede joined the campaign trail for her the National Freedom Party which was also her late mother’s party.

Whether or not the beautiful actress will join politics like her parents is not clear for now, although we believe that time will tell.

Will Zimbabwe follow Africa’s gaming boost?

$
0
0

Africa is in the middle of riding a massive gaming and gambling wave. Many African countries have embraced online gaming, casino gambling and sports betting to the fullest. Data released by Statista estimates that the casino gaming niche alone will be worth $30 million (US) in 2022, which will rise to $44 million (US) by 2026.

Of course, not all African countries are embracing the gambling industry to the same degree. Zimbabwe is one country that has always held gambling at arm’s length. In most social circles, casinos and sports betting have always been frowned upon and seen as a vanity. But are things about to change? Will Zimbabwe join the gambling revolution in Africa soon?

Gambling in Zimbabwe

There is a reason why one of the world’s biggest gambling groups is planning to set up in Africa. Entain, formerly known as GVC Holdings, has launched a subsidiary dedicated to its planned growth in Africa. The group owns 51% of a company called Impala Digital, which will operate as the vehicle for a sports betting platform on the world’s second most populated continent. In fact, it may be the case that many of us already use Entain services, the owner several brands on multiple platforms and countries, one of the most prominent being Party Casino, which is already planning to open in multiple new countries this year.

These new and exciting services may be earmarked to land in Zimbabwe as well, especially after shifting opinions on casino gaming and sports betting within the country. Although most forms of gambling have been a long-time legal activity in Zimbabwe, many locals saw these activities as a social vice or vanity. Most people who did place bets sparingly did so on the state lottery, horse racing and the odd casino game.

However, times are changing. Urbanised areas of Zimbabwe are seeing an influx of sports betting shops. They become most busy when the football leagues in Europe get underway, with plenty of Premier League, Serie A and La Liga fans on Zimbabwean soil. There are also more casinos available, many of which are positioned in hotels and resorts that attract tourists – but not exclusively.

It is the switching attitudes and demand for betting services that could help Zimbabwe ride the gaming boost in Africa. Along with countries like South Africa. The growing industry has the potential to create jobs and improve the lives of many people. However, if the reason for gambling is for quick wins due to living under the poverty line, gambling in Zimbabwe can become a social problem.

Who regulates gambling in Zimbabwe?

The gambling industry is currently regulated by the country’s Lotteries and Gambling Board using the Lotteries and Gambling Act 2000. The board is also responsible for approving and issuing licenses to new casinos and sports betting service providers. Any company that wants to tap into an expanding local market must acquire a legal license from the board.

Africa University (AU) students humiliated flamboyant cleric Passion Java and Robert Mugabe Jnr by chasing them away from the campus following an impromptu visit.

Java, the man who is used to being welcomed by jubilant crowds, especially the youths, was chased away from AU by security guards after students registered their displeasure at seeing him.

Java was in the company of his new friend Robert Mugabe Jnr (the son of the late president Robert Mugabe) who is seen in the video circulating on social media taking selfies during the embarrassing moment.

In the video, students are heard calling “security security security”.

Two security guards can be seen standing by his Mercedes Benz car, demanding that he and Mugabe Jr leave the institution’s premises.

In the background, students can be heard swearing at him and asking him to leave.

Prominent Journalist Hopewell shared the video on Twitter and said: “The mood has changed in Zimbabwe, youths are focused on change not gimmicks,” he said.

“Mnangagwa’s clown, Passion Java was blue ticked at Africa University and security asked him and Robert a Mugabe Jr to leave.

“Mnangagwa is hoping the fake prophet would bring the youth vote, not at AU!” Chin’ono tweeted.
