Local Prophet’s home set on fire

A prophet who allegedly refused to assist clients who sought his services for their ailing relative was left counting his losses after his homestead was set on fire for allegedly refusing to assist them.

While Prophet Paulos Ngwenya (73) was at his homestead with his family three males who are believed to be in their thirties arrived at his homestead in Madlambuzi area in Plumtree, Matabeleland South province and sought his help.

An insider said:”They told Ngwenya that their mother has been ailing for quite some time and they were directed to him by people he assisted. But Ngwenya refused to assist them as he was not feeling well on that particular day.”

The trio did not take that kindly as they pressured him to travel with them to heal their mother but he flatly refused and that triggered emotions to boil as they accused him of being heartless and insensitive.

“They insulted him as they manhandled him while accusing him of being selective in his assistance.

“They accused him of being insensitive and heartless to their ailing mother. They kicked him and insulted him,” said the relative.

Ngwenya’s wife screamed for help and the law breakers thought the best way to inflict more pain to the prophet was by setting his home alight.

Property that included a bed, blankets, and kitchen utensils was set on fire, a witness added.

The arsonists quickly ran away. Ngwenya reported the matter to the police.

Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident.

“We confirm the incident and we appeal for information that may lead to the arrest of the three suspects who are on the run after they burnt a prophet’s homestead.

“The estimated value of the lost property is R170 000.

“Anyone who knows about their whereabouts may contact any nearest police station or call or send a tip-off to 0772226819,”she said.

Efforts to get a comment from the prophet were fruitless as his mobile number was not reachable.

Six robbers broke into a house in Bulawayo’s Cowdray Park suburb and allegedly forced a 22-year-old man to perform sexual acts on his mother after they reportedly stole a plasma TV, cellphones and a solar battery.

The incident was confirmed by Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube and it happened at around 11.30 pm this week on Wednesday at a house owned by the 42-year-old woman who stays with her son in Cowdray Park suburb.

A family member who did not want to be named said the six robbers who were armed with an axe and a kitchen knife swooped on the house while the pair was sleeping.

The source told how the thieves broke into the house and stole cellphones and a TV.

“They smashed a kitchen window before three of them got inside and headed to the owner of the house’s bedroom. They demanded cash and threatened to stab her to death with a kitchen knife,” the source said.

They stuffed a piece of cloth into her mouth while repeatedly demanding money.

“She surrendered three cellphones to them but they demanded more. They force-marched her to her son’s bedroom and woke him before they ordered him to sit on the floor while wearing only underwear,” said the relative to the victims.

After that they sprung a shocker as they reportedly instructed her son to remove his underwear and have sex with his own mother.

“They battered him and he removed his underwear and just lay on top of his mother,” the relative said.

They took his two cellphones and gas cylinder and left in a huff.

The pair reported the matter to the police.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and appealed for information that may lead to the whereabouts of the six thieves.

He said: “Those with information may contact any nearest police station or call them on 2922 -60358.”

A man from Hope Fountain on the outskirts of Bulawayo was rushed to hospital after he was severely axed for making sexual advances to a married woman.

Ephraim Moyo (45) got attracted to Rachel Sibanda (34) when he saw her at Hope Fountain business centre.

A witness said Moyo followed her and made sexual advances towards her and he never knew that Rachel’s husband Adam Sibanda (39) was nearby.

It is alleged Moyo dashed to Rachel and grabbed her by her hand before he passed a comment on how sexually attractive her body was.

The comment angered Adam who rushed to them and quizzed him on what he was up to, the bystander said.

An argument broke out and in a fit of rage Adam who was armed with an axe struck him several times on the body leaving him lying on the ground and his face covered in blood. Adam left his axe and blood- soaked shirt at the scene and went into hiding.

The incident was reported to the police leading to Adam’s arrest.

A bystander transported Moyo to a hospital for treatment and he is reportedly still in hospital.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident. He discouraged community members from taking the law into their own hands.

“We would like to discourage community members from taking law into their own hands as that might lead to unnecessary loss of life. If members of the public face a dispute they should consult third parties such as relatives, elders in the community or friends rather than taking the law into their own hands.”

How Mine robbery suspects appear in court

Three suspects linked to a gang that got away with How Mine’s 11,9 kilogrammes of gold worth US$ 450 000 and four guns were yesterday brought to court by detectives who were seeking their further detention pending investigations.

Antony Moyo (39), Wilson Mutandwa (24) and Earnest Mutandwa (30) appeared at Western Commonage Magistrates’ Court before Bulawayo regional magistrate Mrs Sibongile Msipa-Marondedze.

Police were granted their application to further detain the suspects and the trio subsequently taken back to Bulawayo Central Police for further investigations.

The trio arrived in court under heavy police guard. Earnest, who was nabbed while trying to flee the country through Beitbridge Border Post, was in leg-irons. The suspects will today appear in court for initial remand.

The heist took place on Tuesday during which the three men, together with 10 others who are still at large, pounced on three private security company cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicles which were carrying gold from How Mine.

The suspects who were travelling in three cars; a Toyota Hilux GD6, a Nissan Hardbody single-cab and a Nissan March, ambushed and blocked the convoy before disarming the security guards and loading the gold into their vehicles.

The CIT vehicles were carrying gold worth US$450 000, which was destined for Fidelity Printers. The mine is about 22 km from Bulawayo.

On Tuesday, police officers received information that some of the stolen items were abandoned at a house under construction along Folly Road, West Somerton in Bulawayo.

Detectives reacted to the report and recovered, car keys, 3 x 9mm spent cartridges, a black glove, a 303-rifle loaded with eight live rounds and three empty metal boxes.

Police arrested Moyo who implicated both Mutandwas. The vehicle was left riddled with bullets after the shootout.

Further investigations by the police established that the South African registered Nissan NP 300 single cab vehicle, registration number HR3OXJGP, which was abandoned by the suspects at the scene, belongs to Ximba Nkosilathi, also known as Tonderai Vumbunu and was at times seen being driven by Antony Moyo.

There have been concerns over an increase in armed robberies countrywide. Three weeks ago, armed robbers pounced on CBZ Bank’s Fife Street branch in Bulawayo and got away with US$70 000. Four days later, business came to a standstill in the Bulawayo city centre when police cordoned off streets leading to the Fidelity Building where armed robbers sneaked out with US$6 270 as well as R5 000 from one of the offices in the 12-storey building.

Rains expected in Matabeleland over this weekend

Matabeleland South and Manicaland will see cool winds and light rain over the weekend, the Meteorological Services Department said yesterday.

In an interview, Met Department Head of Public Weather Services, Mr James Ngoma, said the prevailing high temperatures increase the possibility of cool winds, bringing clouds and light rain.

“As we transition from winter into summer, the temperatures generally increase from cold to hot. But even when it is expected to be hot, we still get short interludes of cooling wind, which at times brings clouds and light rain. For example this weekend, we are expecting cool winds over Matabeleland South, Masvingo and Manicaland, with chances of light rain,” he said.

Mr Ngoma advised the public to take precautionary measures to protect themselves from adverse weather conditions.

“People should drink lots of fluids, particularly water, avoid prolonged stay in the sun, avoid outdoor activities between 11.30am and 3pm and protect themselves from the sun by using umbrellas and wide-brimmed hats. People with albinism should use sunscreens to protect themselves from direct sun”, he said.Mr Ngoma said Beitbridge recorded 42 degrees Celsius, Harare 31 degrees Celsius while Lupane recorded a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

Most parts of Zimbabwe have been experiencing high temperatures for the past three weeks, but that trend will not last beyond the weekend.

The MSD said it will continue monitoring weather conditions and accordingly update the public.

In its latest forecast, the department said the country should have normal to above normal rainfall during the coming summer cropping season although there are chances of normal-to-below normal rainfall in regions one and two in the very early stages of the season.

It also warned that there could be prolonged dry spells during the season and tropical cyclones were highly likely.

Jacob Zuma officially free

Former president Jacob Zuma has been released from the correctional services system on expiry of his contempt of court sentence on Friday.

Zuma was sentenced last year to 15 months imprisonment by the Constitutional Court after he breached its order that he should honour a summons to appear at the state capture inquiry.

He was admitted at the Estcourt Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal in July 2021. After serving less than two months, he was granted medical parole by Arthur Fraser, former national commissioner of correctional services.

The department said: “Medical parole placement meant Mr Zuma was to serve the remainder of his sentence under Kranskop Community Corrections.”

It said Zuma had complied with the conditions as set out during his placement.

“All administrative processes have been concluded and the sentence expiry date [October 7 2022] marks the end of him serving his sentence under community corrections.”

His brief prison stint sparked the rioting and looting in KwaZulu-Natal that spread to parts of Gauteng over 10 days last year.

Zuma’s legal battles are ongoing as he fights prosecution on charges of racketeering, corruption, money laundering and fraud relating to the arms deal. He is accused of receiving about R4m via his former financial adviser Schabir Shaik to assist Thales to secure defence contracts. Shaik was convicted in 2005 but was released on medical parole in 2009.

The trial has been on hold while Zuma heads to various courts in his attempt to oust the main prosecutor, Billy Downer, from the case.

Priddy Ugly expresses himself after losing in a boxing match to Cassper Nyovest last weekend.

The rapper says he is a hero to his daughter and a champion to his family, despite being considered a loser by tons of South Africans.

Priddy seems to be in a safe phase as he didn’t take the mockery to heart.

“For the 1st time in my life, I don’t feel the pressure to have to be immortal, to outperform everyone, to over-deliver, or feel like someone’s untouchable favourite character in an anime series. I get to be human, but still a hero to my daughter & a champion to my family,” he wrote,

“I’m allowed to be flawed & I get to rest without guilt. It feels great, I’m feeling blessed & grateful for life, if you knew what we had to overcome these last few months just to be able to stand today, you’d never doubt God’s existence & mercy,” he added.

He also told people to feel free to laugh whenever they see him.

“It’s okay to laugh when you see me, let’s laugh together, stop being so serious. Life is beautiful.”

A video of a Zimbabwean businessman being treated like a common criminal by South Africa Police Service (SAPS) officers after he forgot his passport at his hotel has caused outrage online.

In the viral video, the Zimbabwean businessman was thrown into the back of a SAPS van and locked for more than 2 hours.

The man had gone out with his friends while on a business trip. After they were stopped by the police, he informed them that he had left his ID at the hotel.

The police then detained him, threw him in the back of the van, and ordered one of his friends to go and get his passport.

During the two hours, the Zimbabwean businessman was detained, the police were involved in high-speed car chases.

The petrified Zimbabwean recorded and shared part of the encounter on social media.

His video was shared by acclaimed journalist Hopewell Chin’ono on social media.

Chin’ono wrote,

“A Zimbabwean on a business trip in South Africa drove out with friends and was stopped.l tonight.

“He had left his ID at the hotel.

“They threw him into the van & asked 1 of his mates to get his ID.

“They started high-speed chases, following other people with the guy in the van.”

Chin’ono was critical of the SAPS Officers’ conduct and said they should have been more professional and not exposed the businessman to potentially dangerous situations.

“The Zimbabwean guy was petrified as he was locked in the van for 2 hours.

“It is wrong for South Africans to take their fight against foreigners to this stupid and dangerous levels.

“Arrest a guy and take him to the police station, not this madness of doing irrational stuff!”

I’m in a better space now where I’m able to talk about my arm – Black Coffee

On the evening of February 10, 1990, a few hours before Nelson Mandela was due to be released from Robben Island, Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo‘s life changed forever.

Maphumulo, better known by his stage name Black Coffee, joined “The Diary of A CEO” to speak on his journey to becoming one of the most popular and sought after DJs in the world. The topic of Coffee’s paralysed arm was the most fascinating aspect of the hour-long podcast. It’s a story that was, for years, hard for me to share. “I’m in a better space now where I’m able to talk about it,“ he said.

DJ Black Coffee

The 45-year-old DJ then went on to explain how on that evening, after dinner, he and his cousins heard people marching past their home and singing joyously in celebration of Mandela’s imminent release.

A short while later, his cousins went back in the house, but a 14-year-old Coffee chose to stay out and enjoy the occasion. The crowd was going to a stadium which was close to my house. That’s where the camping and singing until the morning was gonna be. They were on the streets basically gathering more crowds and we were now close to the stadium.

DJ Black Coffee

Then, out of nowhere, a car came speeding towards them and rammed through the crowd. “I was not in the front but I was maybe 20% in and I just blacked out. People were screaming and when I woke up there was fire, people were angry.
Basically this driver switched off his lights to literally just kill people with his car. So they burned the car, and they burned the guy too.”

The DJ then explains how he was taken to hospital and upon his return a few hours later he saw the charred body of the driver still on the side of the road uncovered.

“I don’t think the car reached me. I don’t think it actually touched me. I think (it was) the force of the people that were in front, because of the impact they pushed so hard. So what happened is, I dislocated my shoulder, but severely. I had no bruises, no cuts, it just came off. Meaning my nerves that connect the arm to the body snapped.
