SA students in Russia face expulsion as government fails to pay their fees

More than 200 students from Mpumalanga studying at various institutions in Russia face expulsion and eviction as stipends, accommodation and tuition fees amounting to nearly R55m have allegedly not been paid by the Mpumalanga education department.

Most of the students risk losing about five years of their studies.

Victoria Maheso, who faces eviction by Monday as her accommodation fees haven’t been paid for the past three months, said she was scared as she was about to be homeless in a foreign country.

Our livelihoods are in danger. My landlord was here yesterday evening to tell me that my deadline is on Monday. If my accommodation is not paid for by Monday morning, I should have my things out of the place. I am officially going to be homeless. I am scared, this is why I am speaking out.

“I don’t know what is going to happen to me on Monday. I know the department is not going to pay on Monday. Moscow is getting colder every day. As I am talking, temperatures outside are 8ºC .”

Maheso is also facing expulsion from the institution where she is studying.

“The dean put me on the expulsion list because I don’t have my tuition paid for. We are final-year students and I am supposed to be graduating at the end of the year. How am I expected to graduate if I am going to be dealing with such things?

“How are you even expected to focus when you are dealing with such things? I am unable to even close my eyes and rest properly because I am afraid of the landlord walking in and telling me to take my things and leave,” she said.

The final-year students in applied mathematics in computer science said she was speaking out to find assistance.

She said about 20% of the South African students had already been expelled from their institutions.

She said they had tried to contact the Mpumalanga education department but to no avail and claimed it was downplaying their predicament.

Besides her school and accommodation woes, Maheso said she was in danger of finding herself in trouble with the law.

“I haven’t had registration in the past three months. Right now if I go to buy bread and the police stop me, they are going to ask for my registration, which I don’t have. They are going to arrest me because I don’t have a registration [document] and my landlord won’t give me a registration [document] until my rent is paid. We don’t have money.”

The Mpumalanga education department has confirmed there are 229 students studying in various fields such as medicine, veterinary science, engineering, aeronautical science, cyber security and IT in Russia.

According to the department, 67 of the students are expected to complete their studies in June 2023.

The department confirmed the students are fully funded by it as part of the provincial human resource development strategy.

Department spokesperson Jasper Zwane said the payment of accommodation and tuition fees was expected to be concluded by next Friday October 14, as required by Russian universities.

Zwane denied any knowledge of the students’ hardships.

“As of now, the department does not have information of students whose academic contracts have been terminated or students who were evicted from their respective places of accommodation,” he said.

“The department is in advanced discussions with the South African embassy in Russia and the department of international relations and co-operation in an effort to accelerate the payment of tuition and accommodation for the students.”

He said the department had established open lines of communication with students and they were being updated on progress regularly.

The department said in the past the placement of the students at various institutions had been facilitated by a contracted implementation agent called Green Tutu, trading as RACUS, whose contract had expired in March this year.

“The department advertised a tender in October 2021 to solicit an implementing agent.  The department did not receive any responses and accordingly it was re-advertised this month, October 2022. It is important to note that the department has since increased the stipend from R4,000 to R5,000 a student a month to mitigate the challenges the students are experiencing as a result of the conflict involving Russia and Ukraine,” Zwane said.

He said the department had been able to process the monthly stipends for all students, except for 15 whose banking details were not fully operational.

A civil society movement in SA, We Are South Africans, said it would take up the students’ cause legally, with a criminal and civil action against those responsible in the department.

“It is our conclusion that the Mpumalanga education department is corrupt, and this corruption is threatening the lives of our children abroad,” it said.

Gilbert Martin of We Are South Africans said the parents of the students were frustrated.

“The parents are frustrated because they don’t know what is going on. They just got the end of the story yesterday [Thursday] and they are mortified by what is happening to their children,” he said.

Ethiopian Airlines is set to fly into Bulawayo for the first time, starting on October 30.

The four times weekly service, via Victoria Falls, will bring convenience to Zimbabweans in the diaspora returning home for the December holidays. Travellers from Europe, North America or Asia currently cannot start and finish their travel to Zimbabwe’s second city using the same airline, which Ethiopian Airlines is about to change.

JM Nkomo airport general manager Passmore Dewa said on Friday: “This is one of the best developments in the history of this airport. Travellers now have more choice as Ethiopian is truly a gateway to the rest of the world.

“For Bulawayo and surrounding areas, including tourist attractions, this is a game-changer in very serious ways.”

The Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport’s catchment includes places such as Gweru, Masvingo, Beitbridge and Plumtree.

Africa’s biggest airline, which flies to all continents, officially announced the launch at a reception held at Zimbabwe House in London on September 30.

The flights will originate from Ethiopian Airlines’ Addis Ababa hub, where travellers can connect to popular destinations such as Nairobi, London, Manchester, New York, Washington D.C, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Toronto, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Paris.

Ethiopian Airlines was already flying to Harare and Victoria Falls, making Bulawayo its third destination in Zimbabwe. The airline said the launch of the Bulawayo service was a response to demand.

The airline said it would use a Boeing 737 on the route.

The rebuilt Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport is currently operating under capacity with a few airlines flying into the city, famed for its historic landmarks and cultural heritage.

Fastjet and Airlink operate flights between Bulawayo and Johannesburg on the regional routes. Air Zimbabwe and Fastjet fly the domestic service between the city, Victoria Falls and Harare.

South African Lance Klusener is leaving his role as Zimbabwe senior men’s Batting Coach with immediate effect after he reached a mutual agreement with Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC).

According to his agent, the decision follows Klusener’s desire to pursue professional engagements around the globe which will impact his full-time availability for the national team’s programmes.

Commenting on the development, ZC Managing Director Givemore Makoni said: “We are grateful to Lance for everything he has contributed during his time with us, including helping us to qualify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 which gets underway in Australia in a few days.

“Unfortunately, due to his pressing commitments elsewhere, he could not continue with us on a full-time basis and we agreed it was in the best interests of both parties to terminate his contract. We wish him the best as he pursues new endeavours.”

Klusener had rejoined the Zimbabwe technical team as Batting Coach in March this year, after he had previously served in the same position between 2016 and 2018.

Following news of one of Botswana’s favourite couple’s divorce, Odirile ‘Vee Mampeezy’ Sento has accused his wife Kagiso Sento of binge drinking and infidelity.

In his affidavit, the Kwaito Kwasa sensation tells the court that he has been staying in hotels and friends homes for some time.

The two have been married to his since 2014 in community of property. However in March 2022, the two filed to vary marital regime to that of out of community property.

Vee Mampeezy tells the court he vehemently believes his wife was cheating on him. “The plaintiff has solid suspicion of the defendant’s infidelity. The above behavior has killed all the love and trust that the plaintiff has for the defendant and it accordingly has killed the parties marriage.”

The Taku taku hitmaker further accuses Kagiso of drinking too much alcohol and physically abusing him.

“The defendant has a habit of excessively consuming intoxicating substances, thereby affecting the lives of the parties, which usually ends with disagreements and assaults by the defendant and police officers are called to de-escalate the situation.”

“For the past years, the plaintiff (Vee Mampeezy) would be flee the matrimonial home seeking residence from friends homes and hotels, and then return to the parties matrimonial home when the parties had reconciled,” reads Vee Mampeezy’s declaration in part.

The celebrity couple have between them two minor children, whom Vee Mampeezy pleads with the court that their guardianship should be given to his parents. “It would be in the best interest of the minor children that custody be awarded to the plaintiff’s parents.

The plaintiff’s parents have been the minor children’s primary caretakers of the firstborn since 2008 and the second born since 2020.”

Vee Mampeezy continues to reveal that the children have not been living with the couple due to the toxicity of their relationship.

“The marriage between the plaintiff and the defendant has broken down irretrievably on account of the defendants unreasonable behavior.

“This unreasonable behaviour has made it unbearable for the plaintiff to continue living with the defendant. Moreover, the plaintiff cannot be reasonably expected to continue living with the defendant.”

Teenager dies giving birth at shrine

Government has been accused of not doing enough to eradicate child marriages after a 15-year-old girl died at a church shrine while giving birth.

Nokutenda Hwaramba, from Norton, died while giving birth at an apostolic sect shrine in Bikita, Masvingo province, on Wednesday.

Child rights group Shamwari Yemwanasikana cast doubt on government’s commitment towards protecting young girls.

“Should we trust our law to fully protect the girl child? Are parents doing enough to protect the girl child? How many girls are giving birth at church shrines? Are efforts in ending child marriages in vain?” the group asked in a statement yesterday.

Analysts blamed incidences of early child marriages on failure by authorities to arrest culprits, mainly in the apostolic sects where the practice is rife.

In 2021, 14-year-old, Anna Machaya died while giving birth at Johane Marange shrine in Manicaland province.

In January this year, Ferby Munyafi (15) of Chiadzwa village in Marange died from excessive bleeding, while delivering under the watch of a faith healer.

Analyst Vivid Gwede said the perpetrators were hiding behind church doctrines to escape from prosecution.

“The church is not above the law, especially on criminal matters such as statutory rape and child marriages. However, we see that the government has not been able to enforce these laws,” Gwede said.

“In exchange for giving these violators hiding behind church doctrines protection from prosecution, the ruling politicians have been guaranteed political backing and votes. The result is that so much iniquity now resides in the church.

“We urge that the church must remain a force for good even if it means updating some of the doctrines in line with new societal enlightenment.”

Analyst Methuseli Moyo said: “Child marriages are rampant even among non-apostolic faith communities. The problem is families and communities who hide the issue and make it difficult to eradicate.

“I think the apostolic sects have been deliberately spotlighted by the media because of their religious and political stance. Once the issue becomes politicised, it becomes even more difficult to solve it.”

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said investigations were underway on the death of Nokutenda.

“Police are currently conducting investigations on what exactly happened. We will provide more information later,” Nyathi said.

Reports say approximately 34% of girls under the age of 18 are being married off in contravention of the national Constitution.

At least 12 people died and two were in critical condition after a bus caught fire in Nashik city in India’s western state of Maharashtra on Saturday, a police official told Reuters.

More than 30 injured were being treated at the local Civil Hospital while an investigation into the cause of the accident was underway, said another official at the police control room at Nashik, about 190 km (120 miles) north of India’s financial capital Mumbai.

Underpaid ZBC workers seek President ED’s intervention

Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) workers have written to Information ministry secretary Ndavaningi Mangwana seeking an audience with President Emmerson Mnangagwa over several grievances, among them low salaries.

In a memo copied to the chief director (government programmes and messaging) Jonathan Gandari on Thursday, the ZBC workers said they sought Mnangagwa’s intervention after previous unfruitful efforts to have their grievances attended to by Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa and Mangwana.

“ZBC employees have since declared incapacitation and are requesting your office to facilitate a meeting with the Head of State to hand over a petition and highlight several issues that have been affecting them,” the memo read.

“This comes after months of requests by employees to meet the first citizen, delayed by the ZBC workers committee with the hope that a long-lasting solution would be found for the problems bedevilling the corporation and employees.”

Some of the grievances include victimisation, ZBC’s failure to comply with the National Employment Council on minimum salaries and pension, five months outstanding COVID-19 allowances, poor working conditions and the general collapse of standards at ZBC as well as a poor working relationship with chief executive officer Adelaide Chikunguru.

When contacted for comment, Gandari said: “I am driving from Inyanga, but the long and short of it is that there is a meeting starting at 5pm today (yesterday) which will be attended by the secretary and the media services director.

“Resolving or exploring the issue will come out of the meeting. If everyone is really into resolving, it will be resolved. You can check with them after that meeting.”

Mangwana was not reachable on his mobile phone

ZBC, which is 100% owned by government, has been largely condemned by critics for reportedly being pro-Zanu PF in its news coverage.

Jojo Robinson of Real Housewives Of Durban is sick and tired of people hating her for marrying a rich man and living a life of luxury as a housewife.

Showing off her cars (Range Rover and a Maclaren) in a video posted on Instagram, Jojo hit back at haters who insist on telling her she’s bragging with someone else’s money. She said her hubby’s wealth instantly became hers as well — the moment she said ‘I do’.

“Apparently it’s not my money. Honey, when I said I do, it meant it was instantly mine. People these days don’t understand the term ‘family’ we are a team and neither part of the team is less or more important then the other.

“He works, as do I. We just do it differently, being a mom, housewife and homemaker isn’t easy and people need to stop labelling it as less important then a #normal job. both are important and both equally have challenges. But as a whole or team works brilliantly and neither would have it any other way … I love being the rock/glue/everything in-between that my family needs at home and I know boo loves being the one to support the family.”

A post shared by JoJo Robinson (@mrs.jojo.robinson)

Jojo has no problem spending money. She recently swiped her card overseas to get some cosmetic work done on her body.

The reality TV star took to her Instagram to share her healing journey five days after going under the knife.

The star has been sharing her journey on her Instagram stories since she had her cosmetic surgery called an abdominoplasty with lipo all around with a floating belly button.

“5 days post tho and I’m slowly feeling more human. I managed to finally shower last night the first time since surgery (I wasn’t able to because of the foam wrap around my stomach and the blood pipe coming out my hip). I was also able to come off the morphine painkillers and switch to just normal Myprodol.

“I’m still extremely swollen and I can’t really do much, but the best part for me is that each day I’m better than the day before. The wrap I still have to wear for the next 5 weeks is extremely uncomfortable and I’m also still stuck wearing the ugliest compression socks to help with blood flow for the next week. But we move … upwards and onwards and one day closer to the sexiest Jojo that ever lived,” she wrote recently.
