Report: Zimbabwe army generals heavily involved with mining and fuel cartels

Report: Zimbabwe army generals heavily involved with mining and fuel cartels. THE influence of the military in Zimbabwean politics is reported to be on the ascendancy in politics, economy and government while the army generals have also been reported to be heavily involved in mining and fuel sectors as they increase their control under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s rule.

Former strongman President Robert Mugabe died last September, a year after he had been toppled from power by the deputy, Mnangagwa in a coup backed by the military in November 2017 after 37 years in power. This is an assessment contained in a study titled: “Assessing Continuity and Change After Mugabe”, authored by Alexander H. Noyes and released this month by the US-based Rand Corporation.

In the study, Noyes looks into Mnangagwa’s two year rule and according to the author, the military’s influence in politics, economy and government was on the increase under the rule of Mnangagwa.

“Although the military has always played a prominent role in Zimbabwe’s political economy, its influence has increased under Mnangagwa. The military remains heavily involved in the economy, particularly in the mining and fuel sectors,” said Noyes.

“Two of the main figures behind the 2017 coup, former generals Constantino Chiwenga and Sibusiso Moyo, are vice president and foreign minister, respectively, and remain powerful players representing military interests in Zimbabwe’s cabinet.

“With the old guard and the military still firmly in power, both benefiting from their perches atop the highly cartelised and patronage-based economy—genuine reform is unlikely in the next one to three years in the lead-up to national elections in 2023. Zimbabwe is likely to continue down a path of political polarisation, protests, political violence at the hands of the State, and economic deterioration.”

Noyes said although, Mnangagwa had repeatedly deployed flowery rhetoric, his administration’s piecemeal actions belie any movement toward genuine political or economic reforms.

Repression has increased and the economy continues to sink while Mnangagwa is protecting his and close allies’ political and economic interests. He noted that politics and economics were inseparable in Zimbabwe, and the country would be unable to recover unless the two sectors are addressed in tandem.

“To help the country repair from years of mismanagement, corruption, and State violence, international actors – including the United States – would be wise to push the government in a coordinated fashion to implement genuine political, economic, and security,” he wrote.

Noyes said Mnangagwa had taken some modest steps that could be seen as an indication of progress, particularly on the economic front. But there was a wide gap between the government’s reform rhetoric and the reality on the ground.

“There is a wide gap between the government’s reform rhetoric and the reality on the ground. The government’s well-rehearsed slogans appear to be largely political theatre targeted at the international diplomatic community and potential investors.

“Even where limited progress has been made, such steps appear to be largely cosmetic, a mere box-ticking exercise. In other words, Mnangagwa is attempting to have his cake and eat it too, paying lip service to reforms in the hope of securing international support but staunchly refusing to implement any measures that might harm his and his closest supporters’ political and economic interests,” said Noyes.

He said Mnangagwa’s pledges have fallen short, as genuine reform had been sluggish and repression had increased under his rule. “A serving Member of Parliament characterised Mnangagwa’s reform efforts as putting ‘mascara on a frog’. On the political front, reform promises are severely lagging, with very few tangible steps toward reconfiguring Zimbabwe’s autocratic system.

“A senior diplomat said that none of the ten major legislative reforms that the government had promised had been fully implemented. The government has taken steps to repeal and replace two repressive pieces of legislation, the Public Order and Security Act and the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

“However, the Mnangagwa government continues to prevent and violently suppress political protests and the media remain heavily biased in favour of the ruling party, as do the justice and electoral system,” said Noyes.

He said on the economic front, Mnangagwa’s administration had taken steps toward a few piecemeal reforms in several areas, but progress had lagged in others.

“The fundamentals of the economy remain poor and the results of these patchwork reforms have not been promising thus far. Despite a brief government surplus and the introduction of a new currency aimed at curbing inflation, the economy is again close to collapse, with fuel, food, and electricity shortages reminiscent of Zimbabwe’s political and economic crisis in the mid- to late 2000s.”

Many interviewees in the study, emphasised their distrust of the government, particularly in regard to the management of the economy.

“After decades of monetary and fiscal mismanagement, record levels of inflation, rampant corruption, and slashed savings accounts, Zimbabweans have approached the recent switch back to a national currency with extreme trepidation. Wildly fluctuating exchange rates and a robust parallel market have also led to widespread currency arbitrage, with those who have access to foreign exchange—often government officials—reaping large profits,” Noyes said.

Saucy pictures of Enzo Ishall’s Ngoro co-singer Rachel J. Most of us became to know Rachel after her controversial song with Enzo Ishall Ngoro which was banned on radio and TV airplay over the lyrics which where said to be expl!cit. Some even said the song was P0NORGRAPHY. But who is Rachel J and what does she do?

Rachel Jambaya, affectionately known as Rachel J, who rose to fame when she appeared on six billboards in greater Harare promoting her new single “Makwikwi”, says she is not a slay queen, but an artist.

“My music is about who I am and I’m not a slay queen. It is just a hobby not a career. I am not a musician but an artist,” she said, refuting allegations levelled against her by critics.

Rachel J

Rachel J has featured prominently on city billboards promoting her music. A number of critics have slammed her as a “slay queen,” largely due to what she says, is her flamboyant lifestyle.

“I wanted to put Zimbabwean artists on the same platform as international artists. It’s not the first time my work has appeared on billboards. In fact, I invest money into my music and if anything comes out of the music, oh well, it’s a bonus,” she said.

Rachel

The vivacious singer-cum-businesswoman said the freedom of song is a direct contrast to the right rein she holds over herself in all other aspects of her life. She said her natural optimism and energy have helped her survive in any condition. The businesswoman’s singing talent may be remarkable but her business and family conscience is just as strong.

“I was raised by my grandmother, Gogo Phoeby who was a peasant farmer in Gweru who looked after me when my parents died. It was a tough world and Gogo Phoeby showed me the way and how to survive,” she said.

Singer Rachel J

At 16, Rachel J completed her high school education before enrolling for a diploma at a local college. She later left for South Africa where she enrolled for a degree programme in Fashion and Interior designing.

J. Rachel

“I put myself through school having passed my A’ Levels before I joined Danhiko where I learnt so much about charity work,” she said. Rachel J has refused to be pigeon-holed in one music genre. She has dropped a couple of gems including “Makwikwi” and “Triumph” a gospel number.

Mohale Motaung, aka Somizi’s husband, has had to sound off on rude tweeps this week, and not for the first time Being linked – and now married – to someone as famous as Somizi comes with great pros and cons.

The presenter and actress diverted from her usual when she showed off her husband for the very first time. We’ve known for a long time that uSis Thembisa is in a happy and healthy relationship, but for an equally long time we didn’t have any idea of who the lucky man in her life was.

Thembisa Mdoda

This all changed on Valentine’s Day when the former Our Perfect Wedding presenter showed off her very own perfect man for the first time ever. And we have to say, we are extremely happy for Ms Mdoda!

It seems as if things are not only going well for the lovers romantically, but they are enjoying good fortunes in their respective careers too. Thembisa also revealed that both she and hubby found themselves among the SAFTA nominees:

Speaking to the press earlier this year, Thembisa revealed exactly what it is that she loves about her man when she said, “I think we met at the exact right time, you know, when everything was just coming together. That is very scary because I was like: ‘I’m focusing on my career and my kids’ and then it just happened. You know when it just hits you and you are like: ‘oh cr*p’. But he’s incredible and amazing human being and he boyfriends really well.”

Here’s to queens finding themselves in healthy, peaceful and accommodating relationships.

Things get tough as civilians now fight for mealie-meal – Video

$

Things get tough as civilians now fight for mealie-meal – Video. Things continue to deteriorate economically in the country as all basic commodities are continuing to dwindle in the country as we go back to that 2008 scenario. Zimbabwe’s already catastrophic food crisis could get much worse by the end of February unless $200 million in emergency funding is secured by the World Food Program (WFP), according to a press release.

The United Nations’ food agency has been expanding assistance throughout the country for the past several months but is urging countries and organizations to contribute to its emergency response fund before the peak hunger season.

The new funds would allow the WFP to acquire and deliver enough food to reach 4.1 million people and deal with unexpected developments, such as worsening inflation. “As things stand, we will run out of food by end of February, coinciding with the peak of the hunger season — when needs are at their highest,” Niels Balzer, WFP’s deputy country director in Zimbabwe, said in the press release. “Firm pledges are urgently needed as it can take up to three months for funding commitments to become food on people’s tables.”

The humanitarian crisis in Zimbabwe has been building for several years but has worsened over the past 12 months due to a combination of factors.

A years-long drought has hampered food production in key agricultural zones. This year alone, severe drought caused maize and cereal output to decline by 50%, leading to food shortages and long lines of people queuing up for aid throughout the country. The multi-year drought could continue into 2020, according to WFP, as current forecasts suggest little rain through the first several months of the year.

Extreme droughts are becoming a normal part of life in countries around the world as climate change disrupts global precipitation patterns and increases temperatures. Agricultural systems in countries such as India and China have suffered in the face of massive droughts in recent years.

In the years ahead, countries will have to invest in improved irrigation systems, new modes of food production, and ecologically regenerative practices to avert food crises, as outlined in the United Nations Global Goals.

On top of hostile agricultural conditions in Zimbabwe, an economic crisis has caused inflation to skyrocket, making basic goods too expensive for ordinary people.

Bread is 20 times more expensive than it was six months ago, and maize prices have tripled, according to the WFP. The struggling economy has forced the WFP to switch tactics. Instead of providing cash-based assistance to families so that they can buy food, the organization now simply provides food.

Things seem to be going out of hand, people are now fighting for food, take a look at the video below

Fulu Mugovhani is making her way back to the small screen after a year-long study sabbatical. Mugovhani, 30, will for the first time in her career play a mother and wife in new TV show Still Breathing. She rose to fame as tenacious photojournalist Anzani in Scandal! and feisty musangwe (traditional Venda bare-knuckle boxing) fighter in Ring of Lies.

But it was her starry turn on the big screen as Afro-hipster in coming-of-age movie Ayanda that won her critical acclaims and made her one of the promising stars in SA’s growing film industry.

Fulu Mugovhani

The role won her a South Africa Film and Television Awards (Safta), Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) and took her to the Cannes Film Festival. Sowetan reconnected with Mugovhani for the first time since she took a break from public life at the lavish The Palace of the Lost City Hotel in Sun City, recently.

Phat Joe dodges Work

Controversial radio star Phat Joe has been muted by the SABC. This for allegedly constantly missing work. Phat Joe co-hosts the breakfast show Phat Joe and The Family on Radio 2000, alongside Nala Tose.

But his silence on the airwaves has been deafening for the past three weeks, as he hasn’t been reporting for duty.

SABC spokesperson Mmoni Seapolelo confirmed that the DJ, real name Majota Khambule, was shelved.

Said Seapolelo: “The SABC can confirm that Mr Majota Kambule (sic) is currently on special leave, details of which we’re unable to comment on out of respect for the contractual relationship between the two parties.”

Phat Joe

Phat Joe referred questions to the public broadcaster.

According to SABC insiders, the loudmouthed DJ was suspended following a string of bunking work, including after the December holiday break.

Said an informant: “He was given a few days to rest in the festive season, but instead of returning in January on the agreed date, he stayed away some more.

“This angered station manager, Chris Choane, because he’s been protecting him since he brought him to the station in April last year. Chris put his career and reputation on the line for him.

“When he recruited Phat Joe to replace popular Just Ice, people within the SABC and listeners revolted.

“But Chris went ahead because he felt the breakfast show needed some change since Just Ice has been doing it for 12 years.

“Now, Chris is embarrassed as some of his detractors remind him they told him so.

“Only if Phat Joe knew what he has done.”

Another mole said the DJ is not worried because he knows listeners love him.

Phat Joe

“If he had an ounce of worry, he would have been at work when he was required to do so.

“He knows he’ll be back at work in no time.

“Hence he’s not bothered by his suspension.”

As the contract renewal season for radio hosts looms, insiders claim Choane was not going to bother himself with Phat Joe.

“The SABC is gearing up for a shake-up of SABC radio hosts’ contracts and no one knows who will survive and who won’t,” the source said.

When contacted, Chris referred the SunTeam to the SABC.

Chilling death Prophecy about Kembo Mohadi and SB Moyo – Video

Chilling death Prophecy about Kembo Mohadi and SB Moyo – Video. A prophet has released an apparent death prophecy about Vice President Kembo Mohadi and Minister of Foreign Affairs And International Trade retired Lieutenant General SB Moyo.

The prophecy was made by a Prophet who calls himself Abraham, The Servant of God who is from the “The Church of All Nations”. Apparently, Abraham made the prophecy on the 15th of February 2020. The prophecy was recorded on video and uploaded on Youtube the very next day.

iHarare has established that in the prophecy, Abraham cryptically says he saw Kembo Mohadi and Sibusiso Moyo approaching a “Cloud of Glory”. He adds that the two senior Mnangagwa government officials were being accompanied to the cloud of glory by a third person who was dressed in all white who was “in glory”.

Abraham warns his congregants to pray for their leaders. He then adds that everyone should pray for their families.

Like most prophecies, this prophecy does not contain any specifics such as dates. Abraham also does not go into detail to explain what exactly this means. The church only says that Abraham was inspired to share this message with the nation of Zimbabwe. The church emphasizes that Abraham has no political affiliation.

Vice President Mohadi is no stranger to prophecies. Malawian self-proclaimed prophet, Shephard Bushiri made a ‘prophecy’ in November 2016 that Mohadi was going to receive a “crown”. He explained that the crown represented a promotion at work as well as wealth. A video of Bushiri making the prophecy directly to Mohadi went viral.

Bushiri’s followers and many people who believe in prophets argue that the prophecy came true in December 2017 after Mohadi was appointed as one of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Vice Presidents together with former Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander Retired General Constantino Chiwenga.

According to some, this was the promotion that Mohadi had been promised. At the time of his appointment, he was the Defence and Security Minister.

Two Mashurugwi die as second Kwekwe Mine collapses

Two Mashurugwi die as second Kwekwe Mine collapses. This fatal collapse follows a week after the Globe and Phoenix Mine accident which left three illegal miners dead and 20 others trapped underground until they were rescued. Two more illegal miners died last week while the third one was injured when another mine collapsed in Kwekwe.

This latest mine disaster occurred at Mosi Mine, a few kilometres outside Kwekwe Central Business District, along Kwekwe-Harare highway. Officer Commanding Kwekwe District police, Chief Superintendent Conrad Mubaiwa confirmed the fatal mine accident.

“I can confirm that two people were killed when a tunnel at Mosi Mine collapsed. The third one escaped with minor injuries and was rushed to Kwekwe District Hospital where he was treated and discharged,” said Chief Supt Mubaiwa.

He said the three illegal miners entered the long-abandoned mine shaft before disaster struck. “There are many tunnels at the mine and the three had sneaked into a disused tunnel where they were panning illegally.

“When they went underground, the two, who are now deceased, followed one tunnel while the one who escaped went the opposite direction,” said Chief Supt Mubaiwa.

Upon realizing that the mine was collapsing, the third miner rushed to the scene and made attempts to rescue his colleagues but it was too late.

The mine debris is said to have kept collapsing and he was forced to rush out and save his life, leaving his colleagues to their demise. “He then rushed to alert others who in turn alerted the police. The bodies have since been retrieved,” said Chief Supt Mubaiwa.

Leaked N#de pictures expose Zanu-PF official’s affair with a married woman. iHarare has established from the local tabloid, B-Metro, that Lizwe Clinton Mpofu got the shock of his life after stumbling onto s.e.xually explicit WhatsApp messages between his wife, Virginia Moyo and Nyoni which exposed their alleged s.e.xual affair.

Matabeleland North Zanu-Pf youth Chairman Tamuka Nyoni was recently exposed of allegedly having an illicit s.e.xual affair with a married woman after his mistress’s husband discovered graphic nude photographs of the pair whilst going through her mobile phone.

The matter only came to light after, Mpofu, a former police officer confronted the alleged homewrecker whilst armed with an axe at a funeral. A close source who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the Zanu-Pf official’s shenanigans and also narrated the drama that ensued when Mpofu confronted the homewrecker.

The two were in the habit of exchanging raunchy pictures. Through WhatsApp, Tamuka sent Moyo an image of his manhood and she commented saying it’s big and that angered Mpofu.

He did not know him (Tamuka) so he inquired around and was told the guy who pokes his wife is a Zanu-PF youth chairperson. He was waiting for an opportunity to meet up with Tamuka and by coincidence, he met him at a burial of a child of a fellow villager at King Lobengula township cemetery in Lupane.

One of the locals who witnessed the fracas revealed that the drama ensued soon after a vote of thanks. So it happened that when Monica Ngwenya who is a member of the Lupane Local Board was giving a vote of thanks she mentioned all the important people who were in attendance.

Before she sat down we were shocked to see Mpofu manhandling Tamuka while wanting to axe him. He managed to break free and took to his heels. Mpofu followed in hot pursuit wielding an axe and vowing to finish him off.

Some of the mourners gathered intervened and swiftly rescued the alleged philanderer from Mpofu who wanted to mete instant justice on him. When contacted for comment, the alleged homewrecker, Nyoni, was quick to dismiss the allegations.

He wanted to kill me for something that I did not do. He wanted to tarnish my reputation; that is politics at play. I reported the matter to the police.

Although Mpofu refused to entertain any questions from the publication, his wife, on the other hand, confirmed having an affair with Nyoni but refused to give further details.

Yes, we were once in love sometime back and we broke up. Tell me who told you about that, if you tell me the person who told you I will disclose a lot of information,” she said and stuck to her words as this reporter refused to reveal his source.

MDC members reduced to spectators as Zanu PF loots Harare City Council

MDC members reduced to spectators as Zanu PF loots Harare City Council. The MDC claims they have been reduced to mere spectators as their rivals Zanu PF run the show. Jacob Mafume, MDC councillor for Ward 17, said the corruption in the municipality was because of unnecessary interference by the Zanu PF led government into the city council matters.

Opposition party MDC has distanced itself from the rampant corruption and maladministration happening at Harare City council, instead shifting the blame to ruling party Zanu PF. Speaking at a Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) event last week he said

“There is no devolution in this country. When we removed the position of Executive Mayor, everything fell apart. The accounting officer is now the Town Clerk who is a government employee,” said Mafume who also doubles up as the MDC secretary for elections..

“The Local Government Minister has powers to direct on any issue and we cannot do anything, we can only watch, as councillors we have been reduced to mere spectators.

“The very person we beat in the 2018 elections (President Emmerson Mnangagwa), who has one councillor in the chambers, is the one who is determining everything.

Mafume went on to say they can not buy a pen without going to the President’s Office and there has been a noticeable delay of several approvals

Added Mafume: “We have not been able to employ people with relevant experience and qualifications such as the chamber secretary, finance director and HR (human resources) director because the minister is yet to act.

He also claimed that the road levies collected by Zimbabwe National Roads Authority (ZINARA) are being used to finance government projects which have nothing to do with what the levies are meant for.

Rami Chuene breathes fire for not being nominated for the Saftas

The SA Film and Television Awards (Saftas) nominations were released recently, and Rami Chuene didn’t score a nod, something that left actress Nokuthula Mavuso and many other tweeps asking questions about the credibility of the awards.

Award season in the acting industry always splits Mzansi. While most people seemed to generally agree with the batch of nominees announced recently, there was no ignoring the apparent “snub” of some actors, including Rami.

Rami Chuene

Fellow actress Nokuthula was one of the people who queried why Rami was not nominated. If fans had their way, Rami would be among those who got the nod for keeping viewers glued to their screens. Her character, TGOM, is one of the most on TV. Rami used her response to Nokuthula’s tweet as an opportunity to school Twitter on how productions recommend the best actor candidates for the awards.

The actress also revealed that a production she worked with over the past year only submitted one best actor and one best actress recommendation.

“It starts with the production submitting me. Only one best actor and one best actress were submitted, with all those leads. Imagine! They should have cast the net wider, like other productions. So we’ll sit together in the losers’ corner and root for Loy,” she said. Rami said she hopes the Saftas will make it possible for actors to submit themselves as worthy of recognition, instead having the production “play God”.

“Hopefully Saftas (organisers) will soon allow artists to submit themselves and not leave production to play God over artists. Without a submission, we never know if we could have made it. Kudos to productions that submitted most of their cast and crew. The recognition is worth it,” Rami said.
