Knowledge Musona’s second-half strike seals win for KAS Eupen

Warriors captain Knowledge Musona returned to the KAS Eupen starting eleven and made an instant impact after his second-half goal sealed maximum points for in a 2-1 win over R Excel Mouscron in the Belgian League on Saturday.

The 29-year-old had missed his side’s defeat to Anderlecht last week due to contractual stipulations between Eupen and his parent club.

Musona’s teammate, defender Olivier Verdon broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time when he beat his own goalkeeper to hand Mouscron the lead.

The lead only lasted 3 minutes as Bosnian Smail Prevljak restored parity for Eupen just before the referee could blow for half time.

‘The Smiling Assasin’ completed the comeback and sealed maximum points for his side in the 67th minute, his second goal for his side since he joined on loan from Anderlecht.

800 Zimbabwean nationals in coronavirus lockdown

800 Zimbabwean nationals in coronavirus lockdown. Chinese authorities put the expansive province, which has nearly three-quarters of the 75 000-plus confirmed cases, under total lockdown on January 23 to slow down the spread of the disease.

About 800 Zimbabweans are among the 60 million people that are living in Hubei province — the epicentre of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak — but all of them are currently safe from the respiratory disease, the Zimbabwe Embassy in China has confirmed.

Responding to e-mailed questions from The Sunday Mail, Zimbabwe’s chief envoy to China, Ambassador Martin Chedondo, said the embassy is continuously providing information to Zimbabweans in China on how best to avoid infection. “The embassy is not aware of any Zimbabwean citizen that has been infected,” said Ambassador Chedondo.

“The approximate number of Zimbabweans in Hubei province is between 600 and 800. The embassy is also providing updated information as and when we get it from the relevant authorities; assisting in relaying extension of visa requests from our nationals to the Foreign Affairs Offices of the province, as well as providing general advice and answering any other queries.”

The province, Ambassador Chedondo said, was under complete lockdown “which makes entry and exit not only impossible but also discouraged by the authorities”. China has gradually ramped up sweeping quarantine measures in the province, whose capital city — Wuhan — was most affected by the disease.

Under the ongoing interventions, apartment compounds only allow people to go in and out through one gate, while each household could only send one person out once every three days to purchase groceries and other supplies.

Last week, the Hubei government ordered community officials to enforce strict, around-the-clock closed management of all residential complexes. It also banned the private use of cars and forbade residents from leaving their apartments without permission.

As of Friday, 2 236 deaths had been recorded in China, while 1 109 new cases of the disease were confirmed. Mainland China recorded 118 more deaths on Friday alone, but cases of new infections are declining.

In a statement last week, Ambassador Chedondo said: “We are particularly aware of the anxieties of the Zimbabwean community in China and those at home, hence we continue to urge all not to panic, as well as encourage them to follow all the measures put in place by the Chinese government to ensure their health and safety.

“We wish to point out that currently no Zimbabwean has been reported to have been infected by the virus; hence our insistence for our nationals to keep on following the measures put in place.”

Universities in China are also under lockdown, where students in campuses are encouraged to stay indoors as a preventative measure for their health safety. Students that have travelled to their countries for the winter break are presently being advised to stay put.

The Zimbabwe Embassy is also encouraging students who are in the country to be in constant contact with their respective universities, as well as the Chinese Embassy in Harare to get accurate information on the situation.

Universities in China have begun online lessons so that students can raduate on time.  Last week, a Zimbabwean woman returning from Wuhan was placed under quarantine for tests for coronavirus at Wilkins Hospital in Harare. She was later released after testing negative to the virus.

ED to fast-track Gukurahundi reburials

ED to fast-track Gukurahundi reburials. Exhumations and reburials of Gukurahundi victims was one of the key resolutions agreed between Government and Matabeleland civic groups and traditional leaders when they met with the President in March last year.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to convene a “consensus-building meeting” with Matabeleland traditional leaders soon to co-ordinate and fast-track exhumations and reburials of victims of post-independence civil disturbances that rocked Matabeleland and parts of the Midlands province.

A follow-up meeting held on February 14 established that progress on implementing last year’s resolutions — which include the issuance of civil documents to surviving children of victims of the disturbances and ceding the Matabeleland Zambezi Water Project to locals — was being held up by funding constraints and bureaucracy.

President Mnangagwa, who is following through on his promise to ensure that the country confronts its ugly past, has since undertaken to superintend over the implementation process.

On Friday, Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Kazembe Kazembe led a Government delegation that included Registrar-General Clemence Masango and Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Permanent Secretary Mrs Virginia Mabiza to lay the ground for the commencement of issuance of civil documents to surviving spouses and the victims’ children.

Mrs Mabiza, who is head of the secretariat in the engagement and dialogue with Matabeleland civic society organisations, told The Sunday Mail the delegation “shall mostly deal with logistics for providing birth certificates”.

“Most of the issues that are outstanding are to do with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Registrar-General, and that is to do with the issuance of birth and death certificates,” she said.

The team will also meet with civic society leadership. Ceding of the Zambezi Matabeleland Water Project, she added, was already at an advanced stage. “We have been acting on some of the socio-economic needs such as the provision of water through drilling boreholes.”

She said President Mnangagwa will “soon” preside over a consensus-building meeting to prepare for the commencement of exhumations and reburials. Government is reportedly exploring ways to facilitate legally and culturally acceptable processes.

Mrs Mabiza said: “On the other difficult issues such as exhumations and reburials, we will soon have a consensus-building meeting with chiefs, civic society groupings and other stakeholders, including the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission, to plan the way forward.

“After the consensus-building exercise, we will then craft a way forward in terms of how to facilitate the exhumations. “This will bring on board our development partners and any interested funders to bankroll the exercise.”

All the processes will reportedly be done within the confines of the law, which also entails drafting legal statutes to facilitate implementation. However, the guidance would come out of the planned indaba. “The consensus-building meeting shall involve His Excellency, but we do not have a date yet, but it is going to be very soon.

“You may be aware that we were expecting chiefs to attend the meeting that was held in Bulawayo, but unfortunately, due to some budgetary and other logistical challenges, the Ministry of Local Government (and Public Works) was not ready to sponsor the chiefs to be on board during that meeting.”

The law provides only for the Minister of Home Affairs to grant an order for exhumation.  Government has expanded the scope of engagements to include other civic organisations outside the ambit of the Matabeleland Collective.

The Second Republic, under President Mnangagwa, has opened up discussions on Gukurahundi, which claimed thousands of lives after violence flared up in the Matabeleland and Midlands provinces soon after independence.

At this month’s meeting with civic society leaders at State House in Bulawayo, the President, however, indicated that restorative justice could only be achieved through dialogue.

“We must resist the urge to elevate any differences that arise out of discussions aimed at resolving the issues in Matabeleland to a level where they become permanent barriers that prevent meaningful dialogue among us,” he said.

“Let me assure you that, as I have demonstrated by convening this meeting today, I shall continue to monitor this dialogue very closely and hold all my officials accountable for the successful implementation of issues discussed here . . .

“I reiterate that, as Zimbabweans, we are one. Together we can overcome any challenges that confront us.” The Head of State and Government has been engaging multiple stakeholders to promote peace and unity that is needed to spur national economic growth and development.

Lady Zamar spills the beans on how Sjava allegedly raped her

House music sensation Lady Zamar has opened a case of rape against her ex-boyfriend and fellow musician Sjava.

The revered songbird, real name Yamikani Janet Banda, opened the case at Lyttleton police station in Pretoria in November after taking to social media platforms and claiming that Sjava had s.e.xually violated her.

The case was later transferred to Thohoyandou police station for investigation. According to the police statement, seen by Sunday World, Lady Zamar alleged that Sjava raped her at the Porche Villa Hotel in Thohoyandou after their performance at the Royal Heritage festival in Venda, Limpopo, on September 9 2017. Detailing the incident, the Collide hitmaker alleged Sjava had invited her to his hotel room after their performance at the show.

They had travelled to the hotel in separate vehicles. She alleged that when they arrived in the hotel room, Sjava slept but she didn’t. Sjava woke up in the morning and started kissing her and she kissed him back.

Sjava then performed oral s.e.x on her and when she tried to stop him, he put on a condom and penetrated her, she said.

Sjava and Lady Zamar

The police statement captures the incident thus: “He woke up and started kissing her and she kissed him back. And he started taking her clothing of (sic) and she kept quite (sic) and did oral s.e.x. He took the c0nd0m and put it on his pen!s and penetrated her. She tried to stop him during the oral s.e.x but he did not stop. She just let it happen as he was stronger than her. She was crying as it was painful. When he finished he got off and held her and told her to sleep on the same day at 12:00.”

Lady Zamar said after the rape incident, she and Sjava had travelled back to Joburg together in the same vehicle. She said she has never been herself since the alleged incident. Limpopo police spokesman Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed Lady Zamar had opened a case of rape against Sjava. He said the police have completed their investigations and referred it to the National Prosecution Authority for a decision on whether to prosecute.

“We confirm that a case of rape was opened on 2019-11-14 at Lyttleton SAPS in Gauteng province. It was then transferred to Thohoyandou SAPS in Limpopo on 2019-11-22 for further handling as the alleged incident was reportedly committed in Thohoyandou policing precinct,” he said.

Mojapelo said although Sjava was questioned by the police, he was not arrested due to the complexity of the case.“the alleged incident reportedly happened on 2017-0909 and the case was only opened after two years and this requires meticulous investigations, as in other cases, to ensure that every piece of information is properly followed up,” he said.

Despite promises to provide comment, Sjava had not done so at the time of going to press. When Lady Zamar publicly accused Sjava of abuse on Twitter last year, he responded: “I am aware of the false allegations relating to abuse and assault contained in tweets by Yamikani Banda [Lady Zamar] on 29 October 2019 and the media articles based on those allegations. On the advice of my legal advisers, I am pursuing the matter through formal legal channels.”

Lady Zamar, speaking through her PR firm, confirmed she had opened a case against Sjava and said the matter was sub-judice.

Penny Lebyane has called for some decency from celebrities, saying they should respect the clothes designers loan them to make them shine on red carpets and at events.

Clothing designers need constant back massages, as they carry the entertainment industry in their hands, and from what Penny highlighted, Mzansi celebrities can do better by these talented creatives.

Sis called everybody out, asking them to respect designers because their failure to do so created a bad reputation for everyone in the industry.

Penny Lebyane

“Dear celebs, influencers, ‘it’ boys and girls, whatever you call yourselves lately, and your stylists and managers, please can you treat our designers with respect. Now we can’t use designers’ clothes on loan because you lot don’t clean the clothes, don’t return them on time and (you) damage them,” she said.

Penny went on to talk about how “gross” it was that famous faces thought it was OK to return designers’ property late, unwashed and damaged. She said she’s been told of such cringe-worthy incidents on multiple occasions by different designers.

“It’s gross … ” she concluded.

Y’all better put some respek on the designer’s names, maan!

Twitter in serious fight over Lady Zamar’s rape drama

Lady Zamar was allegedly raped by Sjava after the two musicians performed at the Royal Heritage Festival in Limpopo in 2017, Sunday World has revealed.

Twitter was abuzz on Sunday morning, after Sunday World revealed that musician Lady Zamar has opened a case of rape against an ex-lover, Sjava.

According to reports, Lady Zamar opened the case in November last year at the Lyttleton police station in Pretoria. It has since been transferred to Thohoyandou police station for further investigations.

The case details how Lady Zamar was allegedly raped by Sjava after the two musicians performed at the Royal Heritage Festival in Limpopo in 2017.

Since the announcement, Twitter users have been accusing women of not believing that Lady Zamar was raped by Sjava, with some questioning why a case was only being opened almost three years later, and others saying Lady Zamar was only opening the case because Sjava brought his wife to a concert she was performing at.

However, the news did not come as too much of a shock to fans of Lady Zamar, who were aware that she opened up about alleged verbal and s.e.xual abuse suffered at the hands of her ex-lover in October last year.

“You guys are exhausting man. I’ve been saying… Your precious Zulu man is a liar and a cheater. Cheers to every person that didn’t believe me when I told them that that nigga’s married.. coz in your face.. mxm y’all are exhausting.. now y’all wanna drag me coz I didn’t know?,” she said last year, while also addressing rumours of her past relationship with a married man.

She said: “I was abused (verbally and once s.e.xually) and used… I was lied to and cheated on. Did I know? No. Did people tell me who knew? Yes, some… got inboxes and calls .. Did I ask? Yes. Did people I knew know what kind of man he is? Yes. Did they protect him? His friends? Yes.”

Other Twitter users have shown solidarity and support for Lady Zamar, and all women who have been victims of s.e.xual abuse and assault.

Sunday World further reported that Sjava failed to comment on the allegations at the time of going to print.

Wolves beat Tottenham 3 – 2 in dramatic come-back

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side trailed twice in north London before Jimenez latched on to Diogo Jota’s pass to finish with his left foot. Raul Jimenez scored a smart winner as Wolves recovered to move above Tottenham in the Premier League and boost their hopes of earning a Champions League spot.

Spurs first led when Steven Bergwijn poked in and then from Serge Aurier’s curling effort before the break. But Matt Doherty and Jota combined to bring Wolves level on both occasions.

Jota’s ball was fired home by Doherty after Spurs defender Japhet Tanganga failed to clear and then Jota tapped in from close range following Doherty’s low cross.

Dele Alli had missed the chance to send Tottenham into a 3-1 lead moments earlier when he headed wide while unmarked inside the box.

The win sends Wolves sixth in the table and three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. Both of these sides harbour hopes of reaching the Champions League next season but it is Wolves who boast the better form and now also the better platform to do so.

The task of qualifying for Europe’s premier competition could be made easier if Manchester City’s continental ban is upheld and fifth place comes into play.

Wolves, who could also book a place through the Europa League, showed resilience to twice come from behind and were largely inspired by their two wide forwards – Jota and Adama Traore.

Jota is in superb form and had a hand in all three of Wolves’ goals, with his pass sending Jimenez away to slot the winner beyond Paulo Gazzaniga 17 minutes from time.

The visitors, who are now level on points with Manchester United in fifth, had the phenomenal Traore to thank for bringing them level as he rode a heavy tackle by Tanganga to keep alive a move that ended with Doherty crossing for Jota to score from close range.

That was the Portugal international’s sixth goal in his past three games in all competitions, all coming in the last 10 days.

Spurs find goals, but struggle at the back Tottenham’s striker crisis is well documented and home fans will have welcomed the news England captain Harry Kane’s return from a hamstring injury appears ahead of schedule, but Jose Mourinho’s side needs a short-term solution if they are to keep their European hopes on track.

Spurs, with Son Heung-min also absent after surgery on a fractured arm, have struggled to find a focal point in attack recently and opted for a fluid front three of Bergwijn, Alli and Lucas Moura, though it was Aurier who proved their most penetrative threat.

It was from the Ivory Coast international’s driven cross that Spurs took the lead, as Bergwijn pounced after Alli’s initial effort was saved to score his second Tottenham goal since a January move from PSV.

Alli then found Aurier in space on the edge of the Wolves penalty area and the 27-year-old cut inside before curling left-footed effort into the far corner.

But it was at the other end Tottenham struggled, looking indecisive on occasions with both Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen on the bench, as they failed to stop Wolves’ quick, attacking breaks.

Despite enjoying large spells of possession, Spurs failed to register a shot on target in the second half and Mourinho brought 18-year-old Republic of Ireland striker Troy Parrott on in added time.

His arrival earned a cheer from the home fans, but was too late to make a difference to the scoreline.

Mourinho has previously said Parrott, who had played five Premier League minutes before today, was “not ready” but the Portuguese must be hoping his young striker can prove him wrong in the coming weeks.

Man of the match – Diogo Jota (Wolves)’The players didn’t deserve the defeat’ – Mourinho
Spurs manager Jose Mourinho speaking to Match of the Day: “I think unfair. The players didn’t deserve the defeat. We were punished by, I would say, mentality mistakes. You have to be ruthless against teams like Wolves that plays fantastically well on the counter-attack.

“We deserve much more than these results but this is what it is. [The front three] combined well, they did what they can. They did the plan that we worked on in the week. We had lots of arrivals in dangerous positions, but it is quite frustrating to see they don’t have that feeling.”

On leaving out Alderweireld and Vertonghen: “I think Eric Dier played very, very well, so when the player you bring in as a replacement plays very, very well the question could be why did you play Dier and not why did you leave out Toby and Jan.

“I tried to play with Davinson [Sanchez] and Tanganga, which are the two fastest players. Dier is because he is a midfield player, he has the possibility to come out with the ball and play as an extra midfield player. I thought they did very well apart from the goals, which are collective responsibility, not individual responsibility.”Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo, also to Match of the Day: “It’s amazing the energy levels that we put into the game. They recover very well. It’s a challenge, and when you really embrace the challenge you give everything you have, and this is what we are doing.

“We should start the game better. Tottenham is such an amazing team and can create so many problems. The second half was much, much better, more organised, better pressing and the movements for the goal was good.”

On beating his former manager: “It’s nothing special, was a very, very tough game. I have huge admiration for Jose Mourinho, for me he is a reference.”

Wolves prove the comeback kings – the stats

  • Spurs have lost three consecutive matches in all competitions for the first time since May last year.
  • Jose Mourinho has lost three games in a row for only the fourth time during his managerial career, doing so once with Porto, Chelsea and Manchester United.
  • Wolves have won 35 points from losing positions in the Premier League since the start of last season, at least six more than any other side during this period.
  • Wolves have both scored and conceded in 20 different Premier League games this season (W6 D9 L5), a competition high.
  • Since the start of last season, Matt Doherty has netted eight Premier League goals for Wolves, the joint most of all defenders in the competition alongside Liverpool skipper Virgil Van Dijk.
  • Steven Bergwijn is the first Tottenham player to score in his first two home Premier League appearances since Rafael van der Vaart in October 2010 and the third overall, after his fellow Dutchman and Jermain Defoe (February 2004).
  • Raul Jimenez’s 13 Premier League goals this season have been worth 16 points to Wolves, the joint most alongside Sadio Mane and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

What’s next?

Tottenham host Norwich in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday (19:45 GMT) before visiting Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday (17:30), while Wolves are home to Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday (15:00).

Everton 1 – 1 Manchester United. Everton had a late winner against Manchester United ruled out and manager Carlo Ancelotti was sent off in an entertaining game in which both teams were undone by goalkeeping mistakes.

The hosts made a dream start thanks to a calamitous error by United’s David de Gea, whose clearance cannoned straight into Dominic Calvert-Lewin and then into the net for the striker’s 15th goal of the season.

United responded from that early setback when Nemanja Matic’s shot smacked against the Everton crossbar, and they equalised after 31 minutes when Everton’s Jordan Pickford failed to stop Bruno Fernandes’ bouncing shot from 20 yards.

Everton upped the tempo following the break-in a feisty game where seven players were booked, and the hosts came close to scoring when Gylfi Sigurdsson hit the post with a dipping free-kick.

But there was late drama as both keepers redeemed themselves with fine saves, and Calvert-Lewin had a goal ruled out by the video assistant referee in added time because Sigurdsson had been lying on the ground in front of De Gea in an offside position.

That led to Ancelotti confronting the referee and being shown a red card after the final whistle, with boos ringing around Goodison Park.

The result means United extended their unbeaten run to eight games and remain fifth, while Everton’s chances of reaching the Europa League were dealt a blow following Wolves’ win at Spurs. Everton have flourished since Ancelotti took charge in December, putting them in touch of a Europa League place – and they extended their unbeaten home run to seven games with this point.

But after Calvert-Lewin’s second goal was ruled out, there was a sense of injustice from the manager, the Everton players and a raucous crowd, who all thought they deserved victory. De Gea appeared to have redeemed himself when he saved Sigurdsson’s shot in injury time, but he protested that the Everton midfielder was in his line of sight when Calvert-Lewin followed in.

Referee Chris Kavanagh initially awarded the goal, creating pandemonium inside Goodison – but the mood threatened to boil over once VAR intervened. Despite being dismissed – Ancelotti became the first Premier League boss to be shown a red card – his passion at full-time delighted the home fans, and only cemented his bond with them.

Earlier, he had steamed onto the pitch to break up a melee after a strong Calvert-Lewin tackle on Luke Shaw led to several players squaring up to each other. There will be disappointed about the manner of the result among Everton fans, but they had a clear demonstration that as well as possessing urbane charm, Ancelotti is willing to fight for their cause.

On a day when former striker Dixie Dean was remembered and midfielder Andre Gomes made his first start since a horrific ankle injury almost four months ago, it made it an occasion to remember. Henderson’s relish as keepers struggles Calvert-Lewin’s goal was his eighth in 10 Premier League games, but few have been as easy or fortunate as the game’s opener after only three minutes.

De Gea had plenty of time to clear following Harry Maguire’s careful backpass, but he dithered and the Everton forward’s willingness to press from the front would have impressed the watching England manager Gareth Southgate, who will pick his squad to play Italy and Denmark later this month.

The United keeper atoned for his mistake when he saved smartly from Calvert-Lewin moments later, but it means that no player has made more errors leading to goals since the start of last season than De Gea’s seven.

Pickford then contributed to his own team’s downfall by letting Fernandes’ shot bounce under his outstretched arms. His mistake was not in the same category as De Gea’s, but with Southgate watching on, it may lead the England boss to consider Sheffield United goalkeeper Dean Henderson for the forthcoming friendlies.

The fact he is on loan at the Blades from Manchester United may also offer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer food for thought, although the United manager insisted afterwards that he wasn’t worried by De Gea’s errors and said the Spaniard was “the best keeper in the world”.

Solskjaer will once again be delighted by the form of Fernandes, who was the visitors’ most creative outlet and scored his third goal since joining the club for £47m at the end of January. Man of the Match – Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton)’Disappointed with red card’ – what they said.

Carlo Ancelotti to Match of the Day on his red card: “When I saw the red card it was a disappointment. I asked for an explanation and afterwards, I had a conversation with him – I want to keep that private.”On Everton’s disallowed goal: “The decision was difficult. From our side we say Gylfi [Sigurdsson] didn’t affect the vision of the goalkeeper and they decided differently. Sometimes it is right sometimes it is wrong. But the performance gives us more confidence that we can compete with these teams.

“I don’t think [David de Gea’s view was obstructed]. His vision was clear, but the ball moved past really close to [Sigurdsson] – it’s really difficult, it is not an objective decision, it is subjective.”

Ole Gunnar Solskaer to Match of the Day on David de Gea’s error: “It’s something that happens in football once in a while if you take too long on the ball. Calvert-Lewin always chases everything and it’s unfortunate that it goes in the goal. We responded and got the goal we deserved.”

On the impact of Bruno Fernandes: “He’s a good player and we have been missing that type of player to do that for us, I’m very pleased with his contribution.”

Fortress Goodison since Silva sacking

  • Since Carlo Ancelotti’s first game with Everton on 26 December, only Liverpool (30) and Manchester City (19) have won more points in the Premier League than the Toffees (18).
  • Everton have yet to lose at Goodison Park in the Premier League since sacking Marco Silva, winning four and drawing three games since his departure.
  • Manchester United have lost just one of their last 11 games against Everton in all competitions (W6 D4 L1), losing 0-4 at Goodison Park in April 2019.
  • Bruno Fernandes has been directly involved in 19 goals in 21 league games this season for Sporting Lisbon and Manchester United (10 goals & 9 assists).
  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored 13 Premier League goals this season – the last English player to score more in a single campaign for the club was Paul Rideout in 1994-95 (14).
  • Since Ancelotti’s first game in charge, Calvert-Lewin has scored more Premier League goals than any other player in the competition (8).
  • David De Gea has made seven errors leading directly to an opposition goal in the Premier League since the start of last season, the joint highest alongside Jordan Pickford, Martin Dubravka and Bernd Leno.

What’s next?

Everton travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the Premier League next Sunday, 8 March (14:00 GMT).

Nakamba’s Aston Villa loses to Man City in League Cup Final

Nakamba’s Aston Villa loses to Man City in League Cup Final. Pep Guardiola’s side won a historic treble of domestic trophies last season with the Premier League and FA Cup, and they thoroughly deserved their triumph despite a spirited effort from Aston Villa. Manchester City secured their third League Cup win in succession – and their fourth in five years – with victory over Aston Villa at Wembley.

Manchester City looked like they would stroll to victory when Sergio Aguero’s strike and Rodri’s header from a corner that was hotly contested by Villa put them in complete control inside 30 minutes.

Villa, while strictly second best, offered themselves a lifeline when Mbwana Samatta headed in from Anwar El Ghazi’s cross four minutes before the interval.

City continued to dominate as they sought a third goal and Villa were agonisingly close to forcing extra time when Bjorn Engels saw his header from a corner turned on to the woodwork superbly by keeper Claudio Bravo.

It was their last chance and City closed out the win their superiority merited. Manchester City may be about to lose their Premier League title to Liverpool, who are 22 points clear at the top of the table, but no-one can argue against their claims to the first piece of domestic silverware this season.

They were in control of most of this game apart from a frantic closing spell where the much-maligned 36-year-old Chilean keeper Bravo produced that stunning save from Engels to break Villa hearts.

If there is any frustration – and there will not be much – for Guardiola and his players, it is that they should have had this game done and dusted without any need for late moments of anxiety.

Aguero once again proved he is the man for all occasions with his predatory strike, while 19-year-old Phil Foden demonstrated his rich promise with a fine performance, which even contained a piece of audacious ball-juggling in the second half.

John Stones slipped unfortunately for Villa’s goal but he also contributed some vital defensive headers when City finally had to survive some concerted pressure in the closing minutes.

Fernandinho continues to be a towering presence and it was a win achieved with Kevin de Bruyne on the bench for the first hour.

It has been an outstanding week for City as they followed up Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first-leg win away to Real Madrid by lifting the EFL Cup.

Villa can take heart in defeat

Aston Villa’s players and staff gathered in a huddle after the final whistle for a rallying call for the battles ahead – which will be needed as they lie in the Premier League relegation zone.

They will feel they were served up injustice with the corner that led to Rodri’s goal but they can take some solace from the manner in which they stuck to their task, showed resilience and almost forced this EFL Cup final into extra time.

There was frustration for Villa’s star man Jack Grealish, who could not exert any serious influence and, of course, there will be the pain of defeat.

It is a fact that Villa’s main priority this season is Premier League survival and they demonstrated enough here to give them encouragement that they can achieve that mission, starting at Leicester City on 9 March.

Twelve new cases of coronavirus confirmed in Britain

Twelve new cases of coronavirus confirmed in Britain. It is the biggest jump in COVID-19 cases the UK has seen in one day. Twelve new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in England, the chief medical officer says.

Three of the patients caught the coronavirus in the UK – they are known to be contacts of someone who already had it, and were found through contact-tracing, Professor Chris Whitty said.

Another of the patients, from Essex, has not been abroad and it is not clear where they contracted the virus. The eight others caught the virus abroad – six had recently travelled to Italy and two had been to Iran.

The patients who had recently travelled are from London, West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester and Gloucestershire. Another two are from Hertfordshire. The case in Greater Manchester is a person who lives in Bury and was infected while in Italy recently, according to Bury Council and Public Health England.

The 12 new cases join three that were reported yesterday: one from Hertfordshire, one from Gloucestershire and one from Berkshire. One of those three is a staff member at St Mary’s School in Tetbury and another works at Willow Bank Infant School in Woodley. Both schools have said they are carrying out a deep clean.

Burford (Day & Boarding) School in the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire, is among schools to have been temporarily closed after pupils returned from half-term holidays in northern Italy. The new cases bring the total number of confirmed in the UK to 35, including one in Wales and one in Northern Ireland.

Earlier, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said that in the event of a widespread outbreak in the UK, all options to contain the virus would be on the table, including banning large events and locking down cities. Health officials are still trying to find out how a patient in Surrey caught the illness in the UK without having travelled abroad.

It comes as the government announced it has a “battle plan” to tackle coronavirus including bringing retired doctors back to work. It is understood new emergency powers will be brought in to give schools, councils and other parts of the public sector powers to suspend laws – including rowing back on health and safety measures like allowing larger class sizes – to cope with a pandemic.
The government is also considering whether to encourage more home working and discourage unnecessary travel.

The strategy is based on its existing contingency plans for responding to a flu pandemic, but has been adapted to take into account the differences with COVID-19. Worst-case-scenario plans show 80% of the population could contract the virus, with up to 500,000 deaths.

Cemeteries and crematoriums have been told to make sure plans are in place to deal with a pandemic.

Fears over coronavirus have sparked a rush on items such as hand gel – and as a result, products usually dispatched within a few days on Amazon are instead being pitched with a delivery date of between several weeks to over a month. Supermarket Tesco has sold out of most of its range of anti-bacterial hand sanitisers online.

Health officials in Scotland are to begin testing people with flu-like symptoms for coronavirus, even if they have not visited affected areas. NHS Lothian has introduced a “drive-through” testing centre at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. It is for some patients who have been assessed by a specialist team and who have an appointment so they can be tested for the virus in their cars.

On Friday, a British man who was on board a quarantined cruise ship in Japan became the first UK fatality of the coronavirus. Public Health England has concluded more than 11,715 tests so far, and all but 35 have been negative. Expert teams are actively tracing those who have come into contact with a suspected case.

The government has said unless an individual has been contacted already, or has travelled to an affected area, they should be reassured it is not necessary for them to take any further action. Meanwhile, British holidaymakers in lockdown at an outbreak-hit hotel in Tenerife have been cleared to return home if they test negative for the illness.

In other global developments:

  • World Health Organisation (WHO) says people over 60 or with long-term illnesses should try to avoid crowded places
  • World-famous Louvre art gallery in Paris has shut its doors while staff called a meeting to raise health concerns
  • The US and Australia record their first deaths from the virus
  • Tokyo marathon goes ahead but is cut from 38,000 to about 200 elite runners
  • More than 86,992 confirmed and suspected cases globally, according to Johns Hopkins University, which is tracking the outbreak. The university says there have been almost 3,000 deaths.

IMF revises Zim’s Economic Growth forecast from 2.7% to 0.8%

IMF revises Zim’s Economic Growth forecast from 2.7% to 0.8%. The International Monetary Fund has forecast that South African and Zimbabwe will in 2020 have the same growth rate of 0.8%. The fund on Wednesday revised its 2020 growth projection for Zimbabwe from 2.7% to just 0.8%. The Zimbabwean government, meanwhile, expects growth of 3%.

The fund has revised its 2020 growth projection for Zimbabwe from 2.7% to just 0.8%. In January, the IMF also revised down its growth projection for South Africa to 0.8%. This revision depressed projected growth for the sub-Saharan Africa region, as Fin24 reported at the time.

In its Article IV Consultation with Zimbabwe, the global lender said the southern African country was facing an economic and humanitarian crisis exacerbated by policy missteps and climate-related shocks. “With another poor harvest expected, growth in 2020 is projected at near zero, with food shortages continuing,” it said.

The review comes as the recently reintroduced Zimbabwe dollar has lost much of its value. Hyperinflation hit Zimbabwe in October, according to the Public Accountants and Auditors Board, following rampant price increases, including a 300% increase in the electricity tariff.

In addition to high inflation and low international reserves, the IMF said there was a need to address governance and corruption challenges, entrenched vested interests, and enforcement of the rule of law to improve the business climate and support private sector-led inclusive growth.

“Such efforts would be instrumental to advance re-engagement efforts with the international community and mobilise the needed support,” it said. Zimbabwe faces the difficult task of pursuing a tight monetary policy to reduce sky-high inflation and prudent fiscal policy to address macroeconomic imbalances and build confidence in the currency.

The IMF called for cuts to non-essential spending, including decisive reforms to agricultural support programmes, to allow for social spending needs.

The global lender also stressed that eliminating deficit monetisation would not only be crucial for fiscal sustainability but would also serve as a precondition for stabilising hyperinflation and preserving the external value of the currency.

How to enable beta version of WhatsApp dark mode

How to enable beta version of WhatsApp dark mode. Although these features are currently not available for users in a stable update and the popular social messaging app has not officially announced any update, chances are they might roll out globally soon.

With every beta roll-out, WhatsApp is gradually getting closer to the stable release globally, but it is yet to release it. WhatsApp is also working to bring the dark theme for its web and desktop platforms. WhatsApp has been testing beta versions of the dark mode feature on both Android and iOS smartphones for quite some time now.

To recall, the WhatsApp Dark mode feature has been in the news for more than a year now. Several reports, tweaks and blogs have been giving repeated updates as and when the social messaging app releases even a tiny feature remotely related to the dark theme, but these have always remained unstable and just build up on the hype of inching closer to the theme, until the beginning of this year.

In January, WABetaInfo, a blog that tracks WhatsApp developments stated that the social messaging app was finally releasing a more stable release of the beta version for its users. Available in Android Beta version, you can use the feature right now. All you need to do is download the latest 2.20.13 Android Beta version of the app from its APK version. You can download the APK version by clicking on this link. For iOS, you need to have WhatsApp update version 2.20.30 via its Test Program.

Moreover, with every beta roll out, the app is gradually getting closer to the stable release globally, but it is yet to release it. The latest report from the blog spotted that the app has added a total of 27 solid colour options for its Android beta version. While the dark colour for the theme will help conserve the battery on OLED screen phones, the other solid colours will not perform any such task and may just prove to be more soothing to the eyes than the current white theme.

How to enable WhatsApp dark mode feature on Android:

Once you have downloaded the latest WhatsApp for Android Beta, here are the steps to enable the dark mode feature:

-Open WhatsApp app

-Go to Settings option

-Tap on Chats

-In Chats, tap on Display

-After tapping on Display, you will be able to see Theme

-Choose Dark Theme to enable it

The new Theme Option under Chats has more themes as well. There are options for Light Theme and Set By Battery Saver option also. Apart from this, there is also the System Default option, that is available for smartphones using the latest Android 10 OS and have enabled Dark mode for their phone, system-wise. However, this option is available only for phones running Android 10.

Those running Android 9 OS or lower, there is no reason to get disheartened as all you need to do it to manually set the theme. The Dark Theme is already discussed. Let’s look at the other themes available:

Light theme: it’s the usual white theme that you have always used in these years.

Set by Battery Saver: Available on Android 9 and lower OS versions, the setting allows to automatically switch to light/dark theme, in according to your Battery Saver settings.

How to activate WhatsApp Dark Mode feature on iOS:

Once you have updated WhatsApp beta to version 2.20.30.25 using TestFlight, simply restart the phone and you will see a dark WhatsApp splash screen.

In addition to this, according to a fresh report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is also working to bring the dark theme for its web and desktop platforms.

The blog noticed a few significant changes with regard to the dark interface on the desktop app such as the dark theme itself, the emojis, stickers and much more.

But if you are impatient and want a dark theme-like mode on your WhatsApp web right away, there is a way to work around your wishes. In an earlier article, we shared how you can enable dark theme on the desktop version of WhatsApp right away by simply downloading a Chrome extension and follow the instructions shared here.

Recently, WhatsApp was under scanner for one of its major flaws where group chats invite links got indexed by Google. However, WhatsApp seems to have fixed the bug and also said to have removed the invite links from Google search results.
