Babes Wodumo & Mampintsha Debute Song for Coronavirus

Babes Wodumo and Mampintsha have made a spectacular return from their long hiatus to debut a brand new song about the COV-19. With all the social distancing and self quarantining going on, the lovebirds have given us new melody for the blues. As the confirmed number of infected South Africans continues to rise, sending waves of fear across the country, the famed music couple on Friday aimed for the charts with a single called ‘Corona’.

The song, which has surfaced on their Soundcloud account, is a lively rebuke of the deadly virus. It’s an upbeat offering, in which the two apply their collaborative formula to raise awareness about the viral spread, while also having obvious fun. While quite catchy, the new bop is yet to get an official release on the commercial streaming platforms.

This is the first single from the two in a while. The two retreated from public life after a series of incidents led to a public furore in 2018 and 2019. Since then, it has seemed Babes Wodumo’s once unstoppable career had taken a sad plunge into oblivion.

In early 2019, footage of Mampintsha, real name Mandla Maphumulo, assaulting Babes Wodumo, surfaced on Babes’ Instagram stories. Shared as a live Story, the footage led to national backlash, leading to Ukhozi FM removing all of Mampintsha’s music from rotation.

It wasn’t long before the two got back together, reenacting the violent scenes in a music video. Public outrage continued as footage of the Wololo hitmaker hitting the popular ‘vosho’ dance after her court appearance on assault charges surfaced online.

Woman suffers miscarriage after being r@ped by Prophet during a prayer session. The 18-year-old girl whose name has been withheld is reported to have been pregnant and suffered a miscarriage days after the incident. Unfortunately for the r@pe victim, her husband chased her away soon after the ordeal.

A Harare self-styled prophet was arrested for allegedly forcing himself onto one of his married congregants and having s.e.xual intercourse with her without her consent.

According to DailyNews, the man of the cloth, Godwin Chawe, 25, recently appeared before Harare regional magistrate Temba Kuwanda, facing r@pe charges. Speaking before the courts, the complainant narrated the heartbreaking story.

‘I went to the shrine with my landlord’s daughter who wanted to return prayer ornaments that she had been given by the accused person,’ said the woman.

Upon their arrival, the accused was not available and only met him on their way back. Chawe then allegedly asked to pray with the complainant in private and ordered the other girl to go home. After that, he then told the complainant that he wanted to have s.e.xual !ntercourse with her and she declined his request.

He then violently removed the woman’s white garments and spread them on the ground before making her lie on the ground. He then r@ped her once without using protection.

After committing the crime, he then used a white cloth to wipe the woman’s privates whilst pretending that he was performing a ritual. He then threatened her with an abortion spell if she revealed the matter. After leaving the shrine, she reported the matter the following day. The matter is still pending.

MDC accuses Zanu PF of being sellouts after reversing land reform stance

MDC accuses Zanu PF of being sellouts after reversing land reform stance. Debating on Wednesday in the National Assembly, Mliswa said it was against the country’s Constitution that government would reverse the land reform program without amending the constitution. He told the deputy Agriculture minister Vangelis Peter Haritatos, that the land was protected under Bilateral Investment Promotion Protection Agreements (Bippas).

Former Finance minister Tendai Biti and Norton legislator Temba Mliswa have told President Emmerson Mnangagwa to amend the constitution for his administration to be able to seize idle land from black people for redistribution to white Zimbabweans. Last week, government introduced the Statutory Instrument (SI) 62 of 2020 and gave Mnangagwa powers to give land back to the whites.

“Is it not inconsistent with the laws of this country, especially Section 72. It reads: ‘Section 72 (4) (a) talks about all agricultural land which was itemised in schedule 7 to the former Constitution or (b) before the effective date was identified in terms of Section 16 (b) (2) (a) cannot be taken’.

“What I am trying to say is, if the mihûhhunister intends to give back Bippa farms, the Constitution has to be amended,” Mliswa said. Haritatos, however, said, if the land was being utilised or government feels it is impossible to give back that piece of land that is when it will go the compensation route.

He added the government was not going to uproot people unnecessarily. Mliswa further asked if the government was shifting the land reform policy because it took away indigenisation.

“Have you shifted policy because you took away indigenisation from the blacks and you have given it to foreigners? Has Government shifted their policy of giving land back to the whites, yes or no?” the MP demanded.

The Harare East MP, Biti put leader of the National Assembly, Ziyambi Ziyambi to task and said the intention of S.I. 62 of 2020 was to allow the government to take back the land it had already given in terms of the land reform programme to its original owners.

He added that the government had to amend the constitution in order to take back the land.

“However, there are two problems. Land only belongs to the State by virtue of Constitutional Amendment No. 17 of 2005 and was put in the 7th Schedule of the Constitution. So, in order to take land that was gazetted and give it back to someone, you actually need a constitutional amendment.

“Government put in place a new S.I. 62 which states that those white farmers who had their land repossessed are being given back the land. This is a reversal of the land reform programme, so it must be clear whether there is change in government policy regarding the repossessing of land? How does this happen without amending the Constitution of the land?” Biti asked.

The MDC MPs broke into songs calling ZANU PF “sellouts”.

Responding to Biti, Ziyambi said there were some black people who lost their farms through the land reform programme and have not been compensated, hence the particular Statutory Instrument was trying to give effect or to kick-start the process of having that compensation, to set it in motion.

“Pursuant to that, we have not been doing that. We have black people who lost their farms through the land reform programme, there was no compensation. This particular Statutory Instrument is trying to give effect or to kick-start the process of having that compensation, to set it in motion.

“Secondly, we have those that are protected by Bippas. They are also covered in the Constitution in terms of Section 295 (ii). What has been happening is that because it is in our Constitution, where we were taken to arbitration we have lost dismally.

“So the Statutory Instrument is trying to say that where the land is lying idle, the best possible thing is to give them the land because it is protected under the Bilateral Investment Promotion Protection Agreement but where it is not possible, we then discuss the possibility of compensating for both the land and the improvements — that is the net effect of that Statutory Instrument,” Ziyambi said.

Nevertheless, Biti insisted that the issue of compensation on improvements did not need a Statutory Instrument because it is in the Constitution, otherwise it needed an amendment of constitution.

“What you are doing, which you cannot do, is to take away that land because the land is covered in the Seventh Schedule which is part of the Constitution.

“So if you are going to take away anything that is already in the Constitution, then you have to amend the Constitution,” he said. Since 2000 the land reform program faced years of controversy of the violent manner it was conducted and the rewarding of Zanu PF cronies at the expense of competent farmers.

Report: MDC not putting enough effort in by-elections

Report: MDC not putting enough effort in by-elections. In its report, the ZESN has established that, unlike the MDC, ZANU PF sent senior party officials to preside over rallies in both wards, with Senator for Chimanimani, Monica Mutsvangwa and the ZANU-PF National Political Commissar, Victor Matemadanda making their campaign vibrant.

Research into recently held by-elections in Chimanimani and Mangwe by the Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN) has shown that the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)’s campaigns in both wards were “low key” compared to those of the ruling ZANU PF.

Last week, Zanu PF enhanced its grip on the rural vote after retaining the Chimanimani Ward 16 council seat in a by-election with its candidate Charles Chinamira amassed 1 589 votes against MDC’s Erasmus Brightwell Murada who got only 231 votes. On the same day, ruling party candidate Ndlovu Onthibile won with 339 in Mangwe against opposition’s Phuthi Sindisiwe who lost with 201 votes.

ZESN report has accused the opposition party for “low key” campaigns and failure to comprehensively deploy its agents in both wards. “While ZANU-PF and MDC-Alliance contested both by-elections, only ZANU PF campaigns were more visible. ZESN observers reported that MDC Alliance campaigns in both wards were ‘low key’.

“ZANU-PF campaigns, on the other hand, were reported to be more vibrant. The party’s rallies were addressed by senior party officials.

“For instance in Chimanimani ward 16, Senator for Chimanimani, Monica Mutsvangwa and the ZANU-PF National Political Commissar, Victor Matemadanda and the Member of Parliament for Chimanimani East Constituency, Joshua Sacco addressed the rally that was held at Duri Business Centre

“On election-day ZESN observers reported that polling stations opened on time with all the essential polling materials and due processes were followed in accordance with laid out procedures.

“ZANU-PF comprehensively deployed party agents in both by-elections, while the MDC Alliance only did so in Mangwe. In Chimanimani the MDC Alliance only had party agents at two of the 5 polling stations where ZESN had static observers” read the report.

MDC has been finding it difficult to win the rural vote with and it admits that it is supposed to up its game to dislodge ZANU PF from power.

However, MDC National Secretary for Elections, Jacob Mafume said: “The call for political and electoral reform is more significant now than before. “The By-elections in Chimanimani and Mangwe both had irregularities, a skewed environment with absence of remedies for all the MDC’s calls for redress.”

“That Zanu PF declares some places no go areas is unlawful and unacceptable in a modern society. MDC polling agents were violently chased away by Zanu PF vigilantes at four polling stations in Chimanimani, exactly the same way it happened in the 2018 election,” Mafume said.

Meanwhile, the ZESN revealed that there was low voter turnout in the by-elections where it was below 50%. Turnout was 46% and 42% for Chimanimani and Mangwe respectively. The report cited the following recommendations for the political parties:

1) Political parties should comprehensively deploy party agents during by-elections so that they can authoritatively comment on the voting process. iii. Political parties should mobilise their supporters to register as this will assist ZEC’s task of re-aligning constituency boundaries which have experienced vast demographic changes since the last (2008) delimitation exercise.

2) ZESN is of the opinion that all electoral stakeholders, including political parties need to do more to mobilise voters in their respective constituencies to register to vote and not wait for the periodic voter registration blitz that is conducted by ZEC at different intervals.

3) In light of the impending boundary delimitation exercise it is pertinent that political parties mobilise their supporters to register as this will assist ZEC’s task of re-aligning constituency boundaries which have experienced vast demographic changes since the last delimitation exercise which was conducted in 2008.

WHO: Wuhan recovery gives hope to rest of world

The World Health Organisation said Friday that the Chinese epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak at last reporting no new cases gave hope to the rest of the world battling the pandemic.

The city of Wuhan registered no new cases of COVID-19 in 24 hours – for the first time since reporting its first case in December in an outbreak that has gone on to infect more than 250,000 people around the world and kill more than 11,000 people.

“Yesterday, Wuhan reported no new cases for the first time since the outbreak started,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual news conference in Geneva.

“Wuhan provides hope for the rest of the world that even the most severe situation can be turned around.

“Of course, we must exercise caution; the situation can reverse. But the experience of cities and countries that have pushed back this coronavirus gives hope and courage to the rest of the world.”

Tedros said that although older people had been the hardest hit by the disease, younger people were not spared, saying they made up many of the sufferers needing hospital treatment.

“Today I have a message for young people: you are not invincible. This virus could put you in hospital for weeks – or even kill you,” he warned.

“Even if you don’t get sick, the choices you make about where you go could be the difference between life and death for someone else.

“I’m grateful that so many young people are spreading the word and not the virus.”

He said solidarity between the generations was one of the keys to defeating the spread of the pandemic.

The WHO also said it was now using the term “physical distancing” rather than “social distancing” to describe the need to maintain space between people to avoid the virus passing.

It said the change of emphasis was to stress that though people may need to go into physical isolation, they did not need to become socially isolated, saying it was important to maintain good mental health during the crisis.

“We can keep connected in many ways without physically being in the same space,” Maria Van Kerkhove, who heads the WHO’s emerging diseases unit, said.

“We want people to still remain connected.”

Energy Mutodi: S.e.x workers spread Coronavirus fast. Controversial ZANU PF MP (Goromonzi West) and Deputy Information Minister Energy Mutodi has discouraged Zimbabwean men from hiring s.e.x workers as they risk contracting coronavirus (COVID-19).

Mutodi added that s,e.x workers are at high risk of a person to person transmission. He posted on Twitter:

As we launch the Coronavirus National Preparedness Campaign, we are discouraging close personal contact in queues including the hiring of s.e.x workers. S.e.x workers are at high risk of person to person transmission and can spread the virus quickly in urban areas and growth points.

Mutodi’s remarks follow President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s launch of the Coronavirus National Preparedness and Response Plan on Thursday. While Zimbabwe confirmed their officially positive coronavirus case yesterday, several regional countries, among them Zambia and Botswana, have reported cases.

IMF team returns to Zimbabwe

IMF team returns to Zimbabwe. In May last year, then IMF managing director Christine Lagarde approved a 10 months Staff Monitored Programme (SMP) intended to assist Zimbabwe in building a track record of implementation of a coherent set of economic and social policies that can facilitate a return to macroeconomic stability and assist in re-engagement with the international community.

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) team will be in Zimbabwe next month for discussions on the second phase of the supervised economic reform plan after Harare missed targets it had set in the inaugural phase.

The global lender recently said the SMP was off-track due to mixed policy implementation adding that delays and missteps in forex and monetary reforms have failed to restore confidence in the new currency.

Finance and Economic Development minister Mthuli Ncube said last week that a second phase of the SMP is in the offing to monitor Zimbabwe on the targets it would have set.  “Having completed the Article IV report, they are coming back next month for recalibration and continuation of the second phase of the Staff Monitored Programme.

They are monitoring us on the targets that we set for ourselves in the first place,” Ncube said. “This is not an imposition by IMF on anyone. We have these targets in our budget; we have monetary targets, TSP targets. So, we will stick to those targets ourselves, with or without the IMF.

The IMF is there to tell others that we are sticking to our targets.” The global lender is considered as the international “Commissioner of Oaths” which gives signal to other lenders on a country. Zimbabwe requires cheap lines of credit to help stave off a debilitating foreign currency crisis which stymies growth.

As at the end of September 30, 2019, Zimbabwe’s external debt stood at US$8bn billion which has prevented it from accessing new financing from the International Financial Institutions, traditional bilateral and commercial creditors.

In its report after the conclusion of the Article IV consultations, IMF said the Zimbabwean government has yet to define the modalities and financing to clear arrears to the World Bank and other multilateral institutions and to undertake reforms that would facilitate the resolution of arrears with bilateral creditors.

IMF said Zimbabwe should to give impetus to re-engagement efforts and debt management and transparency. The global lender’s directors cautioned against continued recourse to collateralised external borrowing on commercial terms as this may potentially “complicate any future arrears clearance operation”.

Analysts say a resolution of the arrears problem will unlock cheap lines of credit required to reboot the economy. Zimbabwe has in the past come up with lofty plans to resolve the debt crisis, but failed to implement the roadmap. Zimbabwe’s overdue obligation to international institutions is coming at a cost.

Business Times reported last week that Zimbabwe cannot tap into the US$50bn IMF facility which acts as a shock absorber against the effects of the coronavirus for low income and emerging market countries. The US$50bn Catastrophic Containment and Relief Trust facility is funded by grants and Zimbabwe does not qualify as it has no debt service payment obligation to the fund.

Warriors defender Teenage Hadebe blessed with twins

Warriors defender Teenage Hadebe blessed with twins. Make no mistake about that statistical fact for the Zimbabwe international who nearly broke the internet when he confirmed the birth of his precious twin babies late last week. Teenage Hadebe does not fire blanks!

Prior to sharing the image, Hadebe penned a message on his official Twitter page, writing that he was still giving his “body and soul” to the Zimbabwe national team. This was then followed by a Facebook post of his two new children being held by his father and firstborn child Jordan.

In the picture caption, the Makokoba-bred athlete, who turns out for Turkish side Yeni Malatyaspor, revealed the identity of his precious King and Queen as Alwande and Lwandile.

“Thank you God for giving us the King and the Queen #AlwandeLwandile#TWINS. We welcome the two gifts from above with love,” posted the former Bantu Rovers, Highlanders and Chicken Inn defender.

Sheri Matthews, who is one of the brains behind United States of America’s Dallas Cup in which Hadebe once featured in alongside Marvelous Nakamba and Kudakwashe Mahachi during their days at Bantu Rovers, joined a host of people that congratulated the Warriors centre back on the new addition to his young family.

Hadebe

“Our Dallas Cup son from Zimbabwe is now the father of precious new twins. A boy and a girl join their big brother. When we hosted Zimbabwe it was the first time in 30 years that a Zimbabwean team had participated in Dallas Cup. This year the tournament has been cancelled but we are reminded that life does go on.

We haven’t seen Teenaro Hadebe since 2012 but it’s amazing to keep up with his life through Facebook. One day this grand mummy will get to see them again,” posted Matthews.

The towering defender is married to Mitchell Matambanashe and the couple was blessed with their first born child, Jordan, in November 2016. Interestingly, Hadebe got the news of Jordan’s birth on the eve of Warriors versus Tanzania friendly tie which was played at the National Sports Stadium on 16 November 2016.

Four years ago, the young couple, which met at Mzilikazi High School where they completed their O-level studies in 2012, told this publication that they were looking forward to having four children.

Consequently, the coming in of their doppelgangers means they are one shy of meeting their intended target. A slew of celebrities has welcomed twins in recent years, including George and Amal Clooney, Beyonce and JAY-Z.

As such in Hollywood, giving birth to twins seems to be a trend, and it has now passed on to the football world, as Hadebe has joined celebrated former footballer Abedi Pele, Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo, South Africa’s duo of Andile Jali and Tsepo Masilela on a double dad’s duty.

Hadebe twins

Ronaldo’s doubles are a boy and a girl, Mateo and Eva, who were born in the US on 8 June 2017. Jali’s doppelgangers are christened Andile Junior and Amare. Legendary Pele was blessed with twins that he named Joshua and Celeste. Masilela is father to Gabriella and Tsepo Junior.

Man stabs thigh vendor in a dispute overpayment. Simosenkosi Moyo (26) of Chinotimba suburb allegedly hired a woman who cannot be named to protect her identity for s.e.x at Busi Business Centre. The two ended up having a misunderstanding after they failed to agree on payment.

A Victoria Falls man who allegedly stabbed a hooker three times with an okapi knife for refusing to have s.e.x with him has been charged with attempted murder and the woman has been hospitalised.

Moyo was not asked to plead when he appeared before Victoria Falls magistrate Ms Lindiwe Maphosa. He was remanded in custody to March 30. For the State, Mr Arnold Moyo said Moyo met the woman at Busi Business Centre at midnight and the two agreed to have s.e.x at her place of residence where he later stabbed her three times.

“On Saturday just after midnight, Moyo met a woman at Busi Business Centre and asked to have s.e.x with her. They proceeded to the complainant’s place of residence and upon arrival, the woman demanded payment upfront before they could have s.e.x,” said the prosecutor.

A misunderstanding ensued between the two resulting in the woman ordering the accused to leave her house.

The court was told that Moyo complied and left but returned after a few minutes. He knocked on the door and allegedly punched her once after she opened the door. The accused person left the scene and then waited at a distance. He allegedly ambushed her as she left home intending to go to the nearby police base to report the matter.

Moyo allegedly pounced on her and stabbed her once on the back, head and left arm, the court was told. Police officers manning the nearby base rushed to the scene and rescued the woman after she screamed for help. Moyo was arrested at the scene and the woman was rushed to Victoria Falls Hospital where she is admitted.

When the government’s measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 were implemented this week, musicians across the country knew they would be affected as gatherings of more than 100 have been prohibited. I hope you’re happy and healthy there at home and keeping safe. I just want to give my thoughts and opinions to all the musicians, artists and DJs out here.

“What I would suggest that you guys do is to take the onus upon yourself and speak to the banker, financial institutions, anyone and everyone that you owe money to and make arrangements now.

DJ Euphonik

He explained that it was better for artists to be frank and honest about their situation and not leave the matter unattended. You need to tell them that, ‘hey man, listen I’m in the industry of selling time which is what we do because of my industry, all my shows, all my gigs have been cancelled’. They all know what’s going on, they’ve all seen what’s happening in the banks and institutions. Euphonik said this would allow them to negotiate a better plan and payments terms.

“So, rather go speak to them upfront and make arrangements for them to give you a payment holiday, make sure that the payment holiday is penalty free, cost free and it lasts for about three to six months.”

Govt: Rich people to explain the source of wealth

Govt: Rich people to explain the source of wealth. Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said the conviction of high profile individuals has not been easy because most of them had the means to fight back.

The government will invoke the Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime Act to fight high-profile corruption cases as part of a cocktail of measures to combat graft, legislators have heard.

He said invoking the Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime Act was one of the easiest routes to fight graft because it places the onus on the accused person to prove their source of wealth. Minister Ziyambi said this in the National Assembly on Wednesday while responding to questions from legislators during the Question and Answer Session.

Proportionate Representative MP, Mrs Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga (MDC-T) had asked why there was not much conviction of high profile cases. She said legislators were beginning to doubt the seriousness and political will of Government to fight corruption.

In response, Minister Ziyambi said Government was committed to fighting corruption, but there were many legal processes involved. “What we also have to appreciate is that those that are termed ‘high profile’ are people with means that can use every available legal recourse at their disposal.

“So we would find that in most of the high profile cases, several court applications are made by the accused and that is legal because those processes are allowed,” he said.  Minister Ziyambi said they have noted the need of close working relations between the arresting details and the prosecution to avoid premature arrests.

However, Minister Ziyambi said he was happy that the National Assembly had passed an amendment to the anti-money laundering law to have a provision for asset forfeiture.  Said Minister Ziyambi: “This is an easy route to follow where the onus is on the person to prove where they got the wealth from and if they fail, then those assets are forfeited to the State.

“So we are going to use several avenues to ensure that we deal with corruption cases, but indeed, corruption cases are not very easy to prosecute as they involve people with means and those people will use every available legal process to ensure that they stall the process.”

Norton MP Mr Temba Mliswa also asked Minister Ziyambi to respond to comments attributed to Prosecutor-General Mr Kumbirai Hodzi that some State institutions were captured.

But Minister Ziyambi said Mr Hodzi had told him that he had been quoted out of context.  “The first thing that I want to say is that the Prosecutor-General never said that ‘the prosecution is captured’.

“Secondly, the Prosecutor-General believes that he was quoted out of context. Thirdly, Mr Speaker, if I am captured, it does not translate to the Prosecutor-General being captured.

“As an individual, I am answerable for my own deeds, so if I do some misdemeanours, perhaps that is what the Prosecutor-General referred to, but in conversation with him, he believes that he was misquoted and what was reported which is what the Honourable Member is quoting — he was misquoted because they did not take in context what he was saying,” said Minister Ziyambi.

Gang leader escapes police shoot-out

Gang leader escapes police shoot-out. Abdul, who is believed to be the chief architect of a spate of robberies committed in Zimbabwe between August last year and this month, has been on the police wanted list since 1999.

Two of the five armed robbers killed in a shoot-out with police along Glenara Avenue in Harare yesterday were South Africans, while the other three who were captured alive were Zimbabweans; but the gang leader and most wanted suspect, the notorious Musa Taj Abdul (alias Musa Mahommed), managed to escape.

He was initially reported to be among the five dead robbers, but it turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. “Musa Taj Abdul alias Musa Mahommed is not among the arrested or shot gang members. He is still on the police wanted list,’’ said national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi in a statement.

The three dead Zimbabweans have been identified as Dennis Stanley Dube alias Dingola (29), Taurai Chitepo (36) and the other one only identified as Johnson. Three survivors of the shoot-out — Godfrey Mupamhanga (27), Prince Zakeo (25) and Maxwell Stanley alias Dennis Mateta (25) — were arrested on nine counts of armed robbery and are expected to appear in court today.

Police believe the gang was based in South Africa, just coming north to conduct its Zimbabwean raids.

The South African pair is yet to be identified and the Zimbabwe Republic Police has since asked Interpol to help establish their identities. Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said investigations were linking the gang to the nine robberies.

“The police have successfully linked the gang to the nine cases of armed robbery. Some of these include the armed robbery which occurred on December 20 last year at Wessel Shop in Msasa, Harare, where they disarmed a security guard and stole a special Amadeo Rossi revolver, $160 000 and an Isuzu KB240 single cab vehicle.

“On February 5 this year, the gang went to Makoni Shopping Centre, Chitungwiza, armed with pistols, an AK47 rifle and robbed unsuspecting complaints of US$19 000, $30 000, cellphones and a Toyota Allion vehicle, which was later found abandoned in Glen View,” Asst Comm Nyathi said.

He said on February 26, the gang robbed another person in Harare of US$40 000, jewellery, several pairs of shoes, a laptop, cellphones, a star pistol and Hyundai vehicle. The gang proceeded to the victim’s workplace and robbed him of US$227 250 and R28 000 but police have so far recovered US$10 000.

At the scene of the shoot-out on Thursday, police recovered a 9mm CZ pistol, a Star pistol, Bruno pistol, .38 special Amadeo Rossi revolver, FN Browning pistol, 20x9mm rounds of ammunition and 4×7.65mm live rounds.

Businesses start taking Coronavirus precautions

Businesses start taking Coronavirus precautions. Zimbabwean businesses are starting to embrace President Mnangagwa’s call to reduce contact between people and maintaining high levels of personal hygiene to prevent the possible spread of the coronavirus.

Many companies are now encouraging the use of electronic and on-line banking, working from home where possible and ensuring customers’ hands are clean especially when buying food.

The Government’s directive to reduce public gatherings to less than 100 people came into operation yesterday. Some companies have already started making it mandatory for visitors to use sanitisers that have been placed at their entrances.

However, some apostolic churches were by yesterday still to take heed of the call not to converge as a group of more than 100 people. It was the same situation in the informal sector in Harare, particularly at the large flea markets where proprietors were seemingly not changing their usual habits of close contacts and shaking hands.

Companies, including TelOne, Pick n Pay, Nandos and OK Zimbabwe, had hand sanitisers available to people entering their premises while the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) issued a statement advising depositors to use electronic and online banking services to minimise direct human interaction.

Beta Holdings said it was making arrangements for some of its workers to work from home while those remaining at work have been conscientised on prevention measures. The company is adopting methods that have proved useful in other countries. It said it was streamlining its internal functions to ensure that as much as possible, non-front line staff should work from home.

RBZ Governor Dr John Mangudya, whose remit includes overseeing banking, said in a statement: “All financial service providers should promote high standards of hygiene to mitigate any possible transmission and to safeguard the health of the banking and transacting public as well as bank’s staff. In this regard, financial service providers must stand ready to activate their business continuity and contingency plans, where necessary, to deal with any adverse operational events as they may occur.”

Those remaining to ensure continuity of operations were advised to use sanitisers, regularly washing their hands with soap and social distancing.

Completing the switch to electronic and on-line banking, already far advanced in Zimbabwe, is one way of ensuring people are not infected with contaminated notes and coins, as well as avoiding queues when collecting cash or paying bills.

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has cut the number of people wandering around by restricting visitors who want to see admitted patients, and those bringing in the sick. All visitors will now be screened with just two entrance and exit points, to ensure everyone is monitored.

“We strongly urge all our stakeholders and the public to bear with us during this period. The hospital will review these requirements when it is deemed necessary,” said Parirenyatwa in a statement.

The National Employment Council for the Agricultural Industry in Zimbabwe has called on employers in the sector to formulate and implement standard operating procedures against Covid-19.

At the regional crossborder bus terminus, Roadport in Harare, our news crew established that while buses are still operating services to outward destinations, the drop-off centre on return is now the High Glen Terminus in Willowvale. This will keep departing and arriving passengers separate and help prevent cross infections.

As part of its corporate social responsibility, TelOne has offered toll free numbers for the National Emergency Response Centre and all case handling sites. The national landline number is 08002000.

Other general telephone numbers are 0242701623, Harare Wilkins Hospital 08009000 and Thorngroove Infectious Diseases Hospital 08009001; general number 029-2261930, and Mutare Infectious Diseases Hospital 08009002, with the general number being 0202063847.

However, after a call to one of the emergency numbers, it was not easy to get medical assistance from any of the identified treatment and isolation centres unless referred by one’s doctor or primary healthcare facility.

“We are supposed to ask about your travel history to any of the affected countries or interaction with any person who could have travelled to those places. We would also need to know your symptoms and if you meet these criteria, an ambulance will be sent to get you to hospital.

“If you do not meet the criteria, we will refer you to your doctor or primary healthcare facility for assessment,” said a voice from one of the emergency numbers.

Asked if they have knowledge and information to deal with such cases, the Senior Hospital Doctors Association (SHDA) president, Dr Shingai Nyaguse said some doctors had received training through professional associations.

Dr Nyaguse said private practitioners have since engaged the Government for clinicians to be more involved in the preparedness planning process.

“There is a need for the Government to release clear guidelines specific to Covid-19 and actively train private practitioners nationwide. A lot of training has been done but through professional associations and we feel more could be done. We are ready to work together with the ministry and city health officials in managing any suspected cases,” said Dr Nyaguse.

While other sectors were formulating and implementing plans to fight the spread of coronavirus, a survey by The Herald showed that adherence to the precautionary measures spelt out by the Government remains low in many areas.

While most churches have clearly stated that they will follow policies and keep numbers at their usual services low, some members of apostolic sects were still congregating in numbers beyond the stipulated 100.

It was business as usual at Mupedzanhamo Market and Mbare Musika vegetable market with no extra precautions to minimise social contact or even getting people to keep greater personal distance between themselves.

Vendors who spoke to The Herald yesterday said they were continuing with their business as usual since they relied on the businesses for a living.

“We cannot afford to stay at home because money realised from each day’s sales is what we use for the following day’s meal. That means if we stay at home, we won’t have a meal for the family the following day,” said one vendor, Mr Simon Makome.

The general public were generally indifferent to the advice being given by experts. Most people were still greeting each other with handshakes, standing close together and even trying to push into queues behind a coughing person.

Zimbabwe has not had any confirmed case of coronavirus, which has killed over 10 500 people worldwide with over 256 000 people confirmed as infected.
