Outrageous dressing on the rise in Zimbabwean churches

With many fashion boutiques cropping up and religious ministries also following suit, the debate about religion and dressing is getting hotter. Most people should remember how at one time PHD Ministries founder and prominent prophet Walter Magaya, upon “converting” raunchy dancer Beverly Sibanda to leave her secular ways and attend his ministry, had to not only buy her “decent” clothes but also went an extra mile by opening a fashion boutique for her in Harare’s CBD.But all this went up in flames after Bev ended up pointing arrows at her “Spiritual Father” over allegations that bordered on washing dirty linen in public.

A long time ago, tongues were also sent wagging after another top female artiste, Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave, courted controversy over her dressing which some people deemed unfit for Christian personality and public persona. While the diva was moving with times, and also trying to create her identity, she was hammered left, right and centre.

But today, Fungisai — whose talent has since taken her to new levels by incorporating fashion designing into her art folder — has come up with designs emulated by many women who want to be associated with their identity.

But the issue of dressing has always generated a lot of debate across all spheres of life.

In the office, social, political and religious spheres, people have always had their views on how people should dress and the etiquette and appropriateness befitting such-mentioned.

The dressing of Biblical times was different from what we wear today. Both men and women wore a loose, woollen, robe-like cloak or mantle as an outer garment. It was fastened at the waist with a belt or sash.

A tunic or coat, a long piece of cloth, leather or haircloth with holes for arms and head, was worn under the cloak.

church-ladies

The difference between men’s and women’s clothing was small but distinctive. In addition, men often wore a turban to confine their hair, and women of some cultures wore a veil.

According to the Bible, “A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this,” (Deuteronomy 22:5).

No one knows for sure whether this prohibition was intended as a general principle or was directed at some specific abuse among the ancient Hebrews. Cross-dressing was likely considered an affront to the natural distinction between the se_xes.

It may also have been related to some deviant se_xual practice, or more likely, to pagan worship. It is known that some pagan rituals of that time involved women wearing armour and men dressing as women, and the Hebrews were forbidden to do anything that had even the appearance of pagan worship.

Some people think this verse would prohibit women from wearing pants because pants have traditionally been worn by men. But, in light of the similarity of men’s and women’s clothing in Biblical times and the fact that pants were not worn by either se_x at that time, that conclusion would be difficult to justify.

On the traditional religious side, the Fichani twins who walked on the streets of Harare only with pieces of animal skin cloth covering their front privates were deemed as out of their minds.

While the Fichani twins were immediately whisked away owing to their ‘bizarre’ dressing, recent years have witnessed the likes of the Samba Girls strolling down the streets not only of their country Brazil but also in Zimbabwe during the Carnival episode in semi-nude dressing that sent some of the self-proclaimed religious believers — Christians among them — rushing to have a glimpse!

“This is the kind of hypocrisy is what we are witnessing in today’s church whereby church leaders are now ineffectual when it comes to chiding their flock regarding their kind of dressing.

Too earthly have church leaders and their flock become to such an extent that each and every service they hold will not be a success without an element of indecent dressing in it,” observed one Christian.

Gospel musician and church elder Shepherd Shamu noted that some of the dressing that is being witnessed in the modern-day church — especially these sprouting ministries — is not acceptable as it can distract people from the purpose of worship.

He cited cases of ladies of the night who are flocking to some of these ministries only in pursuit of financial benefit yet lacking in faith and commitment to God’s issues.

“These ladies, if you are observant, have cultivated a habit of going to these ‘minana’ or miracle churches dressed in similar fashion to what they do when they are soliciting for clients. But when you revert back to the Bible, you will learn that this is part of some of the behaviour that Jesus Christ denounced when he saw some people turning the House of God upside-down into a money-spinning venue.

These people should seek God first and everything else will come later rather for them to taint the reputation of the church by dressing semi-nude before hundreds or thousands of people. This is akin to bringing the devil into the church,” advised Shamu.

Talking of dressing, the likes of The African Apostolic Church (Mwazha followers) — which is an apostolic sect — have always been on the receiving end for their strict form of dressing: tuck-in and buttons-up right to the collar of the shirt while the ladies also do the same with their blouses and skirts.

“There is so much in dressing. No one would want to introduce a woman in a miniskirt to his parents or relatives as a potential and be accepted as compared to one who brings in a decently-dressed one,” said Tendai Maphosa of UFIC.

Last Thursday night Zimpraise choir hosted a fashion fiesta dubbed ‘Fashion Meets Gospel’ where prolific stylists, fashion gurus, designers and socialites attended in a bid to discuss on what is the proper dressing for church and is there limit to fashion when it comes to church?

Zimpraise boss Joseph Madziyire said fashion is everywhere and should be embraced.

“When it comes to church and fashion, try wearing something that glorifies the Lord.

Clothes should define you and we should shift from the norm that long dresses are for the church, I am not saying women should wear mini skirts to church but we should try move with the times, trendy and something that can be respected,” he said. Madziyire said women should be modesty and trendy.

“For guys obvious you have to be formal if you want to get the respect not that in a t-shirt you can’t get it but what you need to consider is since your body is the temple, make sure you cover it elegantly,” he said.

Our culture, in tandem with our Christian upbringing have always told us that there are certain values that should be respected when it comes to dressing, marriage and other norms.

“How can I go church with a person who has a reputation of dressing indecently six days of the week and only to dress properly on Sunday when we are attending church service?” lamented one local designer.

And as the issue of etiquette and cleanliness being closer to God, there are fashion houses that have emerged to plug the gap that Christians and other believers have always faced in terms of proper dressing.

Some people are maximising on their church attendance to do business by receiving orders from fellow congregates who like such and such is fashion tastes and designs, ranging from the preacher himself and his wife to the who-is-who personality in the front seat.

Such is the modern church and you begin to wonder whether it is still about worshipping God or material things of this world.

Stunner must be jailed to set example: State prosecutor

$

The State prosecution yesterday urged the court to send hip hop artiste Stunner, real name Desmond Chideme, to jail and set an example on him for negligent driving without a valid driver’s licence

Chideme pleaded guilty to negligent driving and driving without a licence following cancellation of his warrant of arrest. He rammed into four parked cars, damaging them while driving a Toyota Lexus registration number ADG 3577.

In mitigation through his lawyer Mr Dumisani Mtombeni, Chideme pleaded for the court’s lenience in sentencing him. He said he was struggling to make ends meet in the music industry.

“The accused person is married with three children and also takes care of his disabled 60–year-old mother he regularly takes to physicians,” said Mr Mtombeni

“Like many of us, he has been hard hit by harsh economic conditions as he can no longer make a living out of CD sales because of piracy. He further owes producers for the work done to come up with his latest album.”

Mthombeni added that Chideme was remorseful and made efforts to rectify the damages sustained.

“The accused person assisted victims by settling their medical bills. He even went further composing a song that raises awareness against road rage in collaboration with Zimbabwe Republic Police,” he said.

stunner

The reason why he ended up in this situation was because he had an emergency. His son was said to have collapsed and he wanted to rush home and get the minor to a hospital otherwise that car had been parked ever since its purchase.

“I believe a fine of $100 or less would meet the justice of this offence as it was not premeditated. It was an accident and no one is immune.

”The prosecutor Mrs Devoted Nyagano was having none of that. She urged the court to send Chideme to jail.

“The accused person pleaded guilty not because of contrition but because he was aware that there is no way out since there is overwhelming evidence.

“He is a celebrity who is highly regarded by society and ought to have upheld the law and not driven without a licence.

“There is no proof that he repaired the said vehicles and if the court were to look into a local tabloid today he was photographed behind the wheel meaning he is not repentant. An example should be set because statistics of people driving without licences are on the rise and more people are losing their lives,” she said.

Harare magistrate Ms Nomsa Sabarauta will sentence Chideme today.

Mrs Nyagano told the court that on June 20 this year Chideme was driving along Jason Moyo Avenue in Harare. He lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road to the right side and hit four vehicles in the parking bay.

As a result of the accident a fifth car hit a pedestrian, Douglas Sachikonye, who was walking on the pavement.Sachikonye suffered a fracture on the pelvis. Another pedestrian Norest Murungweni sustained minor injuries during the accident. Chideme’s car rested on the precast wall of Old Mutual building causing extensive damages

Woman dies in Greyhound Bus under mysterious circumstances

A woman from Nkulumane suburb in Bulawayo died yesterday in Pretoria, South Africa, on a Johannesburg-bound Greyhound bus and her family has accused the bus company of dumping her body at a mortuary in the neighbouring country without informing her relatives.

Siwineni Khumalo (62) was visiting her children in South Africa when she allegedly fell sick in the bus and started vomiting until she died.

Her family yesterday  said that they were struggling to come to terms with her sudden death.

Khumalo’s brother, who is also the family’s spokesperson, Mr Mlindeli Khumalo, said they are still in the dark on what could have caused her death.

He said the bus company did not officially communicate with them following her death.

Mr Khumalo said they were shocked that a reputable company like Greyhound lacked customer care as it failed to alert Khumalo’s relatives about her death.

“What we’re told is that she was vomiting. It doesn’t make sense that someone’s health takes a nose dive and the bus authorities who we entrust with our lives do nothing. They’re supposed to have a traveller’s details with contacts of the next of kin. They didn’t call anyone among us. We doubt they even tried to assist her,” he said.

siwineni-khumalo

Mr Khumalo said his sister’s children learnt about their mother’s death at Park Station in Johannesburg when they were waiting for her.

“When they inquired about her whereabouts from the bus officials, they were just told that the person fitting her description was left in a mortuary in Pretoria,” he said.

“That’s all they told her children who had to find their way back to Pretoria where they found her dead.”

Mr Khumalo said what was even puzzling was that when she left, she did not complain of any complications.

“I spoke to her twice when she was in Gwanda and before crossing the border. There is nothing that could have made me suspect that she wasn’t feeling well. The only information that we’ve is that she vomited and what caused that is still a mystery to us,” he said.

“We’re hoping that officials at Greyhound Coaches can come out in the open and explain to us how she died. They’re the only people besides passengers who we don’t know who can tell us what transpired. They’re the only authority with answers that we need. We need explanations but up to now they haven’t said anything besides directing us to where they dumped her body.”

He said the family has already moved her body to another mortuary in Johannesburg.

An official from Greyhound Coaches at the Park Station office in South Africa said the company does not have information regarding Khumalo’s death.

“We don’t know anything about the incident you’re talking about. I’ve checked the passenger register, we don’t have that name but for more information contact our station manager tomorrow (today),” said the official who did not disclose her name.

Winky D’s new album creates controversy as music lovers accuse GAFA of Satanism lyrics

Dancehall star Winky D’s new release “Gafa Futi Chi Extraterrestrial” has quoted controversy with music lovers questioning the meaning behind some of the songs.

Music fans have also raised questions on Winky’s dressing these days. The “UFO” mask Winky has been wearing after the album was launched has been quite controversial.

Unveiling the album last week on a local radio station, the dancehall chanter’s mask set tongues wagging.Others have questioned the name of the song “Bhebhi RaMwari”.

Critics say Winky could have opted for another name that is acceptable to the Christian community. The term “Extraterrestrial” refers to any object or being beyond the planet earth.

winky-dLast year, when he released “Gafa Kicks Tape” song “Disappear” it prompted some to say the lyrics were linked to Satanism.

The album has 12 tracks “Happiest Man”, “Bob Marley Funeral”, “Gafa Party”, “Extraterrestrial”, “Twenty Five”, “Panorwadza Moyo ft Oliver Mtukudzi”, “Karma”, “Photo Life”, “Hooray”, “Bhebhi RaMwari”, “Mwendamberi” and “Daddy”.

On the song “Bhebhi raMwari”, one Reward Muchini asked the meaning of the lyrics on a Facebook post.

Some of the names and lyrics by Winky D are suspicious — what does ‘Bhebhi RaMwari’ mean?”

Other posts include; “Gafa Futi: Chi Extraterrestrial . . . this album ka? Of course it’s beyond doubt that Winky D is a master craftsman. There is a song here with a line that goes like, ‘Rudo rwedu rwapisa kunge kumba kwaLucifer . . .’”

However, Winky defended himself in an interview with a local radio station saying there was nothing wrong with that.“I don’t understand why people are making issues out of that song. It simply means a good wife comes from God,” he said.

The musician said there was nothing to talk about regarding his dressing as it was just creativity.“As artistes, we have our own way of doing things and that is why we dress and put things in a way that brings people close to the music,” he said.

His lyrical prowess makes the album outstanding with songs “Twenty Five”, “Dady” and “Mwendamberi” .Winky enlisted the service of superstar Oliver Mtukudzi on the song “Panorwadza Moyo” which has created some waves across the country.

Mboro yake was so big and aiziva kuishandisa, ndakazopinda maone nekuda mboro

Mboro yake was so big and aiziva kuishandisa, ndakazopinda maone nekuda mboro! I have always been munhu anoda mari, it’s always been in my nature to hustle even nepasingadi ku hustler. Ndaitengesa masalon products and I had given one of my clients a whole box and had taken ages to pay, I don’t take such nonsense till this day.

She had been avoiding me saka one morning I woke up it was a Sunday. I decided to go kuchurch. The reason was maiva nemunhu ane mari yangu saka ndakapfeka maternity dress it was the only dress I owned, I was 20 ndaida zvinhu I believed ma trousers pakuchena. I was 9 months pregnant or at least I thought I was. I had done amateur calculations basing on the evening I spent with guy where he made breathtaking love to me, oh how I remember it like it was yesterday. So steamy, so aggressive, each time he went deeper I knew I was gonna get used to this guy plus baba vanga vakasenga ivavo. Mboro yake was so big and he knew how to use it.

Matsinga tsinga eshondo iya maihwe zvangu ah vasikana ndaida kuidya nemuromo. I enjoyed touching it occasionally kungoidenha and see it pressed against his trousers yakazvimba and screaming for attention. I made it my best friend that night and that’s the night my best friend made me pregnant. Now ndapfeka hembe went to church kutsvaga mai vemari yangu. I had a funny feeling the whole morning just tired and hungry ndichinzwa kuda kusvirwa. Mumwe musi ndakamuka ndichida chibuku, earlier ndichigeza beche randainge ndisina kubata in the past few months, ndikanzwa kutsvedzerera and I figured ndinofanirwa kunge ndatunda in one of the dreams I had been having lately.

I paid no attention to the discharge. Now I was by the church my goodness the surprise I got in the yard was jaw dropping just as much as it was intriguing. It was like heaven I silently whispered hoo nhai so this is where all the good men have gone to. I was in a trans masasi eharare. I must have drooled chete there some seriously mighty fine brothers. Suddenly a sharp pain shook me up and brought me back to reality. I was a 90kg pregnant woman with hair that looked like I had been struck by lightning wearing a see through maternity dress that left nothing to the imagination. 5 mins later a tall hunk approached me extending his big fairly brown strong slightly hairy amazing hand and said, “you must be new” , In my head I responded “you must ride me ” “I’m Tafadzwa let me help you find a seat” I never said a word.

Funny enough I saw mai vemari yangu so I went over to her and told with the biggest plastic smile in the history of mankind and told her no jokes I will make a scene pachurch pako ndipe mari yangu. She said hesi Amanda sha zvapapressa I don’t have money I don’t know how to tell you i feel bad. So I raised my voice. .. Nhasi uchandipa mari yempiro I ain’t leaving . “Amanda veduwe mkoba sure kwawabva kuzondishura” Right before I could answer there was that pain again.“Aaaawwww! This time much more intense.

By now it was pretty obvious I was in labour. My water broke and quickly sat down. The journey to the hospital was the longest ever, hama nurses are the evil but very necessary, the pain was unbearable. I kept cursing myself but still wondered how something so extreme so passionate so wonderful something I would rejoice and get wet at just the thought if it could result in a bomb of pain like this. The noise the sweat the screams the fatigue, dry mouth the pain all in one. I wasn’t so sure if I wanted a baby at that moment, I wanted the pain to go away I wanted to sleep I knew everything I wanted and sure knew what I never wanted again. I told myself handidi kuona chinhu chinonzi mboro duze neni futi, ndiye muparanzvongo, this better be one hell of a magnificent baby ndirikurwadziwa veduwe.

Anyway all that nonsense I was thinking came to a stop when dhodhi riya became a nightmare mabhonzo angu akamover my body turned to a stone, mudhidhi wese bhenengu kushure kwaive mberi, mberi yese yaive sure I swear. Ndakagomera nesimba rangu rose and screamed fuk you prince! Nurse :yei mwana abuda
Next thing mwaaaaaa mwaaaaaa. This had better be one he’ll of a baby.

One hell of a baby for sho so small fragile beautiful she looked cold but I was assured that’s how they are all folded up. Her eyes my gosh her eyes wide opened looking up at me.

Local lawyers have dismissed as false a recent claim by Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko that cabinet ministers could only be arrested with the blessings of the president.

Mphoko, who has courted citizens’ ire for overstaying in a Harare hotel and directly ordering the police to release executives arrested for fraud, made the remark in defence of Jonathan Moyo, the Higher and Tertiary Education minister wanted for fraud involving some $430,000.

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) last Wednesday enlisted the help of the police in trying to arrest Moyo but President Robert Mugabe ordered them away.

Moyo and Mphoko are linked to a Zanu PF faction, Generation 40 (G40), which is accusing Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa of being behind the minister’s attempted arrest.

Moyo, who has admitted to the alleged fraud but defended it saying he was doing it as a philanthropist, is being accused of conniving with top ministry officials and his assistant to defraud the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund (Zimdef) which falls under his portfolio.

Part of the swindled money was allegedly used to buy bicycles for members of his Tsholotsho constituency while some of it, he admitted, went to fund Zanu PF rallies.

Paul Mangwana, the Zanu PF deputy legal affairs secretary and former cabinet minister, said the constitution did not force the police or other law enforcers to first seek presidential permission when arresting ministers.

“The minister has no immunity because he is a citizen just like everybody else. There is no legal provision that ministers are immune to prosecution while they are in office. Reporting to the president about a minister’s impending arrest is just a political courtesy.

“The only person who enjoys immunity is the president. No one else enjoys that, even ministers while they are in office.People should not try to hide behind a finger by claiming that the (Zimbabwe) Anti-Corruption Commission has no mandate to investigate alleged corruption of ministers.

“ In fact, they are allowed by the constitution to investigate and report to the police who then use their discretion to determine whether indeed there is a prima facie case or not. If a minister commits a crime, ZACC has a constitutional right to investigate them,” said Mangwana who was instrumental in setting up the first ZACC.

phelekezela-mphoko

Alex Magaisa, a law teacher at the University of Kent in the UK, insisted that ZACC must do its work without interference.

“The constitution does not give the president any powers over the functions of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission apart from his role in the appointment process,” said Magaisa.

“The ZACC is an independent commission and does not operate under the direction of any other person, not even the president. The constitution provides that all persons are equal under the law. There is no provision that says ministers are subject to different rules from other citizens.

“If anything, as public officers in charge of public funds, ministers are expected to demonstrate higher levels of probity and accountability. The fact that ministers have been allowed to behave like little gods over the years does not mean the law protects them from arrest,” said Magaisa.

However, in order to ensure national stability, law enforcement agents could consult the president when they intend to arrest a minister, according to another lawyer, Tendai Toto.

“To me, it will be hazardous and disruptive to governmental functions to allow the free reign by police to arrest ministers upon receiving pieces of evidence suggesting reasonable suspicion of the commission of an offence. Police powers can be abused to settle political scores among other sinister objectives.

“The said policy must also not be abused and selectively applied. It must be applied in a transparent and accountable manner in tandem with the national objectives provided in the Chapter Two of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

“The consultations will inform the police to arrest in accordance with any existing policy directives prescribed in terms of Section 221(4) of the Constitution. This is not to say that ministers are immune to criminal sanctions in accordance with the law. My view is that the Acting President made a pronouncement of Governmental policy that binds the executive functionaries including the law enforcement agents,” said Toto.

Some full and deputy ministers have been arrested over the years.

These include Christopher Kuruneri, the former Finance minister in Mugabe’s government who more than a decade was arrested for possessing a Canadian passport at a time Zimbabwe had banned dual citizenship.

Elton Mangoma, the former Energy minister under the 2009-2013 coalition government was also arrested on more than one occasion.

Demo ban challenge goes to Supreme Court

A consortium of political parties, churches, human rights lawyers and civil rights activists last Friday approached the Supreme Court to have a High Court ruling upholding a police ban on demonstrations quashed.

The consortium’s legal team is being led by constitutional lawyer, Tendai Biti, and comprises the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, Zimbabwe Divine Destiny, Democratic Assembly for Restoration and Empowerment, National Electoral Reform Agenda (NERA), Combined Harare Residents Association and Stendrick Zvorwadza, a civil activist.

The police recently banned demonstrations in central Harare till 15 October and the decree was upheld by the Judge President (JP) George Chiweshe.

He overturned an earlier ruling by a fellow judge, Priscilla Chigumbura, who had nullified an earlier police ban, arguing that it was improperly made and upheld another application seeking to nullify a government notice, No. 239 (A) of 2016, made by police to ban demonstrations.

tendai-biti1

Biti confirmed they had taken the matter to the Supreme Court.

The applicants insist that bans on demonstrations violate several sections of the constitution, among them Section 59 that provides for peaceful demonstrations and petitions.

Chiweshe maintained in his ruling that the police acted lawfully and that Section 27 of the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) which brings limitations to the people’s right to demonstrate and petition was fair and justified.

“Taking all these factors and considerations into account, I am satisfied that based on a value judgment, the provisions of Section 27(1) of the Public Order and Security Act satisfy the requirements set out under Section 86(1) of the Constitution, namely that the limitation it imposes on the right to demonstrate as enshrined under Section 59 of the Constitution is fair, reasonable, necessary and justifiable in a democratic society based on openness, justice, human dignity, equality and freedom,” he said in the ruling that the consortium is challenging.

From early July, Zimbabweans engaged in a series of demonstrations against corruption, bad governance, police brutality, lack of electoral reforms and a festering economy, but security forces reacted heavy-handedly.

President Robert Mugabe, the main target of the demonstrations, publicly condemned judges who ruled in favour of demonstrations before Chiweshe finally stepped in and upheld police bans

Zanu PF youths abduct – strip girl told her that she was paying for the sins of her mother

An eighteen-year-old girl from Norton was allegedly stripped, beaten and harassed by alleged Zanu PF youths in the presence of the ruling party’s candidate, Ronnie Chindedza, as cases of political violence escalate ahead of the by-election set for October 22.

In the Saturday incident, that was reported to the police under RRB number 2958856, Natasha Bakalia — whose mother is a campaigner for independent candidate Temba Mliswa — said she was dragged from her home, thrown in a lorry that was packed with Zanu PF youths and taken to a base where she was violently abused until nightfall.

Sobbing during a press conference in Harare yesterday, the girl said the youths repeatedly told her that she was paying for the sins of her mother Ronika Nyikadzino.

“Two lorry trucks and an Ipsum plastered with Zanu PF posters and Zanu PF activists arrived at our house singing “Temba uchaurayisa vana” (Temba you will cause deaths).

“Two youth members grabbed my clothes and tore them as I tried to stop them from getting inside our house because they were saying they wanted to throw out my mother’s property from the house,” Bakalia narrated.

“After they had overpowered me, they made me strip and change clothes in front of them,  I know these three men, and they carried me to the lorry.

natasha-bakalia

They took me to their base in Ngoni where Ronnie and Yondo sister (Sheila Mabasa) and other members were and I was further assaulted as they surrounded me, singing and beating me. I was forced to wear a Zanu PF T-shirt.

“They then released me after 8pm, but did not return our house keys, and now we are having to sleep at a friend’s house. And after the incident they are still coming making rounds at the house we sought shelter.

In the police report, Priscilla Jambaya and Samantha Zhakata, who are said to be Zanu PF loyalists were also named as perpetrators of violence.,

In a related incident, another supporter of Mliswa, Violet Maskini and her husband were also assaulted.

At the same press conference, which was attended by war veterans and National reform Agenda (Nera) convener Didymus Mutasa, Mliswa accused Zanu PF political commissar Saviour Kasukuwere and other senior officials of fanning political violence.

“As the Norton Zanu PF candidate, Ronnie Chindedza is compelled by the Electoral Code of Conduct under Section 7(2) to ‘restrain his representatives and supporters, from contravening this code and any applicable electoral or general law, and must take or initiate appropriate disciplinary action against those who contravene this code or that law,” Mliswa said.

“The case of abduction of the girl-child is a matter that I would like to bring to the attention of the first lady (Grace) Mugabe and hear her sentiments on the matter

ZIMDEF financier angered by Moyo hints at withdrawing support

$

The Employers’ Confederation of Zimbabwe (EMCOZ) which wholly funds supports the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund (ZIMDEF) human capital development projects, has voiced grave concern over the looting of funds by Higher and Tertiary Education minister, Jonathan Moyo.

ZIMDEF, which falls under Moyo’s ministry, has been prejudiced of close to $500,000 through an illegal loan and the diversion of money to buy bicycles and fuel that largely benefited the minister.

The cycles went to Moyo’s Tsholotsho constituency while the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) alleges that part of the money went to buy fuel coupons that Moyo converted to his own use.

Moyo admitted to the corruption through Twitter, but insisted that he was doing it for a good cause.

EMCOZ said it was following the ZIMDEF saga with “keen interest” and noted that companies under its fold risked folding after sacrificing money to ZIMDEF.

“It is accepted that the Minister, as Trustee, has wide discretion in how the Fund will be used. It makes sad reading, though, when newspapers publish stories of alleged corruption and misuse of funds at the Fund against the background of companies folding as a result of garnishees resulting from lack of capacity to meet the regulatory requirement of paying ZIMDEF dues,” said EMCOZ in a statement

jonathan-moyo-bicycles3

The confederation said it was enraged and dismayed by Moyo’s remarks relating to the scam and it looks likely that ZIMDEF might fold as the funder may withdraw support.

“Employers are distraught and have required that EMCOZ should follow the developments with intense interest and depending on the outcome of investigations taking place, consult on options available as the way forward,” reads the statement.

EMCOZ said the issues raised by ZACC “are of great concern to our membership and, by extension, to the entire investing community”.

The confederation made a thinly veiled attack on Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko who has come to Moyo’s defence.

He dismissed ZACC’s attempts to arrest Moyo, claiming that only the president could cause ministers’ prosecution, but this has been waved off by prominent lawyers.

“We are concerned that a legal institution like the (Zimbabwe) Anti-Corruption Commission is vulnerable to attack by the very institutions which are sworn to protect it.

“This could be interpreted locally and internationally as interference with the course of justice which significantly affects the attitude of investors.

“We call on the re-establishment of communication between the Fund, the Trustee and the funders through the National Manpower Advisory Council, as has always been the case in the past. ZIMDEF as a public institution must apply the funds for the purpose for which it was established and it should not be allowed to operate outside its mandate,” added EMCOZ.

RBZ measures have Zimbas crying foul as importing an ex-Japan now a hassle

Companies that import second-hand cars to Zimbabwe are feeling the pinch of the central bank’s measures to restrict the importation of non-essential products, with indications showing a decline in the volume of imported vehicles.

In May, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe came up with a four-tier import priority list for the efficient use of foreign exchange resources, with a bias towards supporting the productive sectors of the economy and reducing the import bill.

The two main second-hand car export companies into the country are Japan-based BeForward and SBT Japan.

A source at BeForward said yesterday the company was advising customers to register with a local bank  whose processing time for payments was faster than other financial institutions.

car-transporter-vehicle-importscar-transporter-vehicle-imports“You have to open an account with a local bank because that is the only bank sending money to Japan at the moment without any hassles. Other banks take longer, maybe up to five months,” the source said.

Due to growing cash constraints owing to the shortage of the United States dollar, the central bank came up with the import priority list to keep as much money in the country.

The list was grouped into four parts, priority list one to three and non-priority, the latter is where imported vehicles fall under.

With this list in place, those wishing to import vehicles now have to go through a rigorous process, which involves getting approval from the central bank, a process which can take up to five months. The process involves extreme vetting to ascertain the reason and nature of the purchase.

A source at SBT Japan also confirmed that customers were transferring funds to Japan through a local bank, which had provided less hassles.

According to the sources, an invoice is issued in Japanese yen to a customer, who takes it to their bank, where United States dollars in the account are converted into yen and remitted to Japan.

The sources said transfers were also being done from Zambia National Commercial Bank Plc in Zambia or FNB in South Africa.

The Motor Industry Association of Zimbabwe president, Luckson Gwara said what this meant was that those wishing to own vehicles would be disappointed.

“From a general public perspective, these are the only vehicles they (motorists) can afford and would obviously want to own a vehicle of their own. So if they cannot purchase it … you can just imagine,” he said.

“Ordinarily, if we were manufacturing cars now, it was going to be a good thing, but because our production has not taken off, you are looking at a scenario where people are having a bit of constraints in terms of movement.”

Players in the motor industry estimate about 42 000 second-hand vehicles were brought into the country between January and August this year.

Makandiwa ‘Miracle money’ backfires

$

A 38-year-old man bought airtime worth more than $1 000 since 2013 after Standard Chartered Bank erroneously linked his mobile number to a client’s account

James Saunyama, who believed the funds to be “miracle money”, pleaded guilty to theft charges when he appeared before Harare magistrate, Mr Arnold Maburo.

He was sentenced to six months in prison. However, Mr Maburo suspended three months for five years on condition of good behaviour.

The remaining three months were suspended on condition that he restitutes $1 075, 82 on or before November 21 this year.

In mitigation, Saunyama said he was attending a church service at United Family International Church led by Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa in 2013 when they asked for his phone number.

“I gave them my number and they asked me to check my balance,” said Saunyama.

“I saw that my mobile number had an enormous amount of money and I believed it was miracle money. Since then, I used the money to top up my airtime and those of my friends and relatives.”

makandiwa

The complainant was Standard Chartered Bank represented by its fraud manager, Mr Kudzai Mujaji.

Prosecuting, Ms Yeukai Musengi told the court that between January and October 2013 the bank’s Msasa branch in Harare made a mobile bank registration error.

The accountant linked Saunyama’s mobile number to Ranganai Muguti’s bank account, giving him access to banking services offered on the bank’s mobile banking platform.

Muguti’s password was sent to Saunyama’s mobile phone and he changed it to his desired password fully aware that the bank account was not his.

From October 18, 2013 to May 29 this year Saunyama topped various amounts of airtime into his mobile number.

The offence came to light when Muguti visited the bank and discovered that someone else’s mobile number was linked to his account.

He then realised that money was being withdrawn in airtime purchases from his account.

The bank reported the matter to police leading to Saunyama’s arrest.

Four arrested at Bulawayo bank for $2 700 counterfeit notes deposit

FOUR men from Bulawayo have been arrested after they allegedly tried to deposit $2 700 in fake notes into a city bank.

An alert teller at the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe branch in the city centre on Tuesday discovered the money was counterfeit and alerted his superiors who called the police.

Sources close to investigations said the gang had 27 old US$100 notes.

The four were identified as Mgcini Dube (36) of Pumula South, Thobani Moyo (39) of Mpopoma, Ngonidzashe Mpofu (42) of Gwabalanda and Mthokozisi Mhlanga (24) of Nkulumane.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango confirmed the arrest.

“I can confirm that we’ve arrested four men who were found in possession of articles for criminal use. Investigations are underway,” she said.

A source said Dube is a malayitsha who is said to have brought in the fake notes from South Africa.

The source said: “Moyo remained outside CBZ, Joshua Mqabuko Street Branch, while Mpofu and Mhlanga proceeded into the bank.

“They completed three deposit slips and proceeded to a bank teller who then cross-checked the notes. It was then discovered that they were fake and bank officials immediately informed police.”

A bank official who spoke on condition of anonymity said tellers were shocked to see someone who wanted to deposit so much cash in an economy grappling with a shortage of US dollars.

“When we informed them that their notes were fake, they laughed it off. Instead, one of them insisted the money was genuine and claimed he had just received it from his nephew who works in South Africa. He claimed his nephew got it from tips at his workplace,” said the official.

mans-hands-in-handcuffs

He said a malayitsha had delivered the notes to him. We thought it was odd that someone in South Africa would receive only $100 notes as tips. Later on, he shifted goalposts and said a cousin who is a Zimra official at Beitbridge Border Post had given him the notes.”

The official said the man told them his cousin had asked him to try to deposit the money and see if he would succeed.

“We called in police who arrested them for being found in possession of counterfeit US dollars,” he said.

Last Friday, five Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) officers appeared in court in Harare after they were found with $1 800 in fake notes.

The five appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Victoria Mashamba who charged them with possessing articles for criminal use. They were remanded to October 19 on $50 bail each.

They were found in possession of 16 $100 notes which were stashed in a black diary on the driver’s door panel of a white Mitsubishi Gallant they were driving.

In the same diary, detectives also recovered a photocopy of a payslip and proof of residence belonging to one of them which led to their arrest.

Last year, police bust a fake notes syndicate operating in the southern region of the country.

The gang would buy small items at grocery shops using forged $100 notes to get change in genuine currency.

Just before Christmas, a woman from Nguboyenja suburb in Bulawayo was arrested after allegedly trying to buy groceries using fake $100 notes, with police sources saying there had been a proliferation of counterfeits in the city during the festive season.

Melody Dube was arrested at Zapalala wholesale along Herbert Chitepo Street after trying to buy two packets of chicken worth $12 with a fake $100 note.

Sources at the shop said it was the second time she had been apprehended at the same outlet for attempting to buy with fake money
