In a bizarre incident that left villagers in Murewa shell-shocked, a 12-month-old baby was crushed to death by its mother during a fight with her husband recently.

Aleck Kamumvuri (30) of Chitsiga Village, under Chief Mangwende in Murewa will soon appear in court facing murder charges after hitting his wife Shamiso Makosa (20) with a stone resulting in her falling and crashing to death Praise Adija who was strapped on her back.

Makosa, who is a second wife to the accused, had a misunderstanding with her husband who had not bought the idea of chasing away his first wife Sheilla Zhozho from the homestead. Makosa did not want to share the home with Zhozho.

Efforts to get a comment from Mashonaland East Province acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tendai Mwanza were fruitless.

But according to reliable sources, on October 4 at around 12pm after the misunderstanding, Makosa left for her parents’ home in the neighbouring Mushore Village with her one-year-old baby Praise, a stepdaughter to Kamumvuri.

The following day, Kamumvuri went to Blessing Mavhunga (47), Makosa’s aunt at Mushore Village to inform her about the misunderstanding.

He met his wife at her aunt’s homestead in the company of his brother Gift (22). It is alleged Kamumvuri took Makosa aside and began discussing their issue.

But they failed to reach a consensus, resulting in Makosa opting to return to her husband’s homestead to collect her belongings.

It is said while on their way , the two began discussing their issue again while at Chigama Hill. They agreed that Makosa would return home while Kamumvuri arranged alternative accommodation for her.

As they went down the hill, Makosa had a change of heart and began insulting her husband.

Makosa left Kamumvuri behind heading towards their homestead. This angered the accused who then picked a stone and hit Makosa on the head.

Kamumvuri picked a second stone and hit his wife on the head again. The wife screamed as she tried to flee.

It is said the accused then threw another stone that hit his wife on the head resulting in her, together with her baby falling down unconscious.After realising that he had committed an offence, Kamumvuri fled the scene.

Makosa and her baby were later found by a villager Kingston Diamond who alerted other villagers. The two were taken to Kadzere Clinic where Praise was pronounced dead while Makosa was referred to Murewa Hospital before being transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital for further treatmentPraise’s body was taken to Murewa Hospital mortuary for a postmoterm.

Kamumvuri surrendered himself to Murewa police the following morning and was subsequently detained.

A Hurungwe man got “possessed by spirits” in court last week as a Karoi magistrate heard his criminal insult case. Magistrate Mr Sam Chitumwa had to refer self-styled traditional healer Francis Koga (age not given) for mental examination in terms of the Mental Health Act, after he gave inconsistent answers to the magistrate’s questions, moments before he fell into a “spell” in court.

Prison guards had to battle with Koga as he shivered, hissed and groaned soon after telling the magistrate that he knew nothing about the charges he allegedly was facing. Koga claimed that he might have been possessed when the matter occurred since each time he got possessed, he never recalled all that happened later.

The complainant in Koga’s case is Hatirarame Muringai who is also a relative to the accused. Prosecutor Mr Gerald Dhamusi told the court that the matter against Koga of Hesketh Farm near Karoi arose sometime in July this year when he visited Muringai and her husband in Bunda Village under Chief Nematombo.

It is alleged that Koga advised Muringai that the spirit that worked through him had shown him the way to end her troubles. During his manifests, Koga allegedly ordered that everyone move out of the house except the complainant and her husband. The accused, it is further alleged, then told the husband to go out and collect a stone at an intersection half a kilometre away.

While the husband had gone out to fetch the stone, Koga allegedly asked Muringai to come closer to him. It is further alleged that Koga later asked the complainant to remove her skirt and underwear and squat in front of him.

Upon being asked the reason why she should do such, Koga, it is alleged said he wanted to have a good view of her se_xual organ, since viewing it was a requirement for the spirit whose power he was using to drive away her misfortunes

A white Nissan hardbody from the Ministry of Education fell into a water canal in Rusununguko Township phase one Mvurwi around 19:45hr yesterday

There was drizzle in Mvurwi during that time and very few people were seen walking in the streets.

Allegations are that the driver was in company of a rank marshal’s wife whom he wanted to drop at a junction.

The driver failed to negotiate a corner as he was said to be under the influence of alcohol resulting in him switching the car’s lights in order to drop his concubine but to no avail.

Arrived on the scene few minutes later only to see eye witnesses, but the driver and his girl friend had varnished in the darkness.

Eyewitnesses say the driver is from Norton but could not shed more light as he was in panic mood.

Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) national co-ordinator, Dzikamai Mavhaire has said rival MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai is not fit to be the country’s president as he is not educated.
Instead Joice Mujuru is the perfect coalition leader.

Mavhaire said Mujuru is more educated than rival MDC-T president Morgan Tsvangirai.

“Mugabe has said Tsvangirai cannot lead because he did not fight in the liberation struggle, now Mujuru is here.
“He said Tsvangirai is not educated, Mujuru has a doctorate.”

Mujuru, who left Howard Institute while doing Form 2 in 1973 to join the liberation struggle, had to study from home because of her commitments as a Cabinet minister.

In 2014, Mujuru graduated with Doctor of Philosophy Degrees at the University of Zimbabwe.

Her thesis was on strategic exploratory entrepreneurship study of sustainable agricultural business.

However, in 2013 Tsvangirai received a honorary doctorate degree from the Sun Moon University in South Korea, in recognition of his efforts towards attaining peace and democracy in Zimbabwe.

Sun Moon University granted Tsvangirai an honorary doctorate in Public Administration and commended the former trade unionist for pursuing a peaceful and non-violent campaign for democratisation.

FOURTEEN people died in two separate road traffic accidents that occurred around the Kadoma area along the Harare-Bulawayo Road at the weekend.

Police spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the first accident, which occurred a few kilometres outside Kadoma on Saturday, killing seven people, leaving nine others injured in a pile up involving three vehicles — a commuter omnibus, Toyota Vitz and a Honda Fit, saying the accident occurred at Ngwena shops near Empress turn-off.

The second accident, which claimed seven people, was confirmed by Kadoma mayor, Muchineripi Chinyanganya.

It’s been a bloody week for our roads. My director of health has just told me seven people died in a accident that happened Saturday, six of them died on the same day while one died this morning (Sunday),” he said. “Just after lunch (yesterday), another accident happened and was attended to by our ambulance and fire team, details are still sketchy but I am told seven people could have died in the accident.”

AN angry mob attacked two Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) traffic police officers at Basch Street Terminus popularly known as Egodini, for reportedly mounting an illegal road-block as well harassing a certain kombi crew.

The mob, consisting of touts, drivers and the general members of the public descended on the two cops accusing them of abusing their powers by setting up an illegal road block.

The officers clad in police uniforms got into trouble the moment they tried to arrest a kombi driver at the rank, saying he had not heeded to a stop sign stop at a road-block.

“They followed the driver from a certain road-block to arrest him. This did not go down well with some of the onlookers at the rank,” said a witness, Jabulani Dube.

He said the mob then apprehended the two and began assaulting them with clenched fists and booted kicks.

“All I heard was whistling and cheering, when I came closer to the mob I saw two policemen being beaten up,” said Dube.

Another witness, Hebert Mpofu said the two cops had become notorious for harassing kombi crews at the rank.

“I think the people were fed up. Assaulting law officers is a serious crime but the officers had it coming as well,” said Mpofu.The officers managed to escape unharmed in a Toyota Hilux double cab.

After the debacle two kombis hastily left the terminus which onlookers suspected had the people  ones who were beating up the police.

“These kombi which left the terminus, their drivers could be ones who were beating up the police officers and they fear that the two traffic police could come back with anti riot squad to return the favour,” said one witness at the scene.

However such scenes are not new at Egodini as touts are well known for such mischief.

Onlookers said touts and drivers are well known for doing mob influenced performances especially on women said to be wearing “skimpy” costumes.

“One lady had her skirt torn off by one of the touts because he said it was too revealing and since she wanted to walk naked she was helping her by tearing it  off,” remarked a bystander.

“Luckily one of the women who sells there gave her a cloth to wrap it around before she went to buy another one.”

Bulawayo ZRP spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango has not yet responded to a written inquiry by Radio Dialogue regarding the incident.

Twenty­nine aspiring High Court judges have proved that they cannot write a judgment, an elementary skill that every judge must possess.

For fear of more embarrassment, four of the candidates — part of the 10 lawyers lined up to be interviewed for the High Court judges’ posts yesterday — chickened out and walked out of the waiting room with tails between their legs. The panel, that was made up of 10 commissioners from the Judicial Service Commission, had to adjourn early after dealing with the remaining six candidates.

Out of 43 candidates who on Friday sat for a two­hour exercise to test the candidates’ ability to write judgments ahead of the public interviews for the selection of eight High Court judges, only 14 passed. Dr Elizabeth Rutsate, Mr Graciano Manyurureni, Mr Passmore Mabukwa and Mr Cassian Jakachira, who failed the pre­interview exercise conducted on Friday, packed their belongings and left the waiting room after the announcement of the written test results

In his remarks at the beginning of the public interviews yesterday, Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku registered his displeasure over a poor show by the 29, saying judgment writing skill was a pre­requisite for all judges. “I am somewhat disappointed to report that out of the 43 candidates who turned up for the exercise, only 14 obtained a passing mark of five and above out of the total mark of 10. “The Judicial Service Commission regards the writing of judgments as the competence of any judge.

It is like the possession of a driver’s licence for all drivers,” said the Chief Justice. The judiciary services boss advised those who failed the preliminary test to carefully reconsider whether they should attend the public interviews. “In view of the poor performance by most of the candidates during the pre­interview assessment exercise, I am calling upon all those who did not pass this elementary exercise to introspect and decide on whether they want to proceed with the interviews or wait until they are ready and can pass this preliminary hurdle,” he said. Chief Justice Chidyausiku said it was not an easy task for the JSC to recommend for appointment someone who has failed the basic level

“We believe that it will be dereliction of duty on the part of the JSC to recommend to the appointing authority, the appointment of a person who fails at this elementary level to appreciate the nature of the matter that is before them or the issues that they have to decide, or the law applicable in resolving the matter,” he said. Chief Justice Chidyausiku however, said it was a constitutional right for all candidates to participate in the interviews and persuade the panel that despite their poor showing at the pre­interview stage, they should be appointed to the High Court bench.

Mr Benjamin Chikowero of Gutu Chikowero Legal practitioners was the first to appear before the panel. He was among those who passed the pre­interview test and he told the panel that he was qualified for the post. Bindura­based lawyer Mr Zvidzai Kajokoto of Kajokoto and company was grilled over his persistence with the interview despite scoring 40 percent in the judgment writing test. Chief Justice Chidyausiku said: “You want us to have faith in you when you demonstrated that you cannot write a judgment? Your mark was very low. It was four out of 10.” Mr Kajokoto defended himself saying it was his first time to write a judgment and that given a chance, he would improve.

“It was my first time to write a judgment given that I have never been on the bench. Given time, I will be able to write good judgments. “If I got four out of 10 on my first judgment, then it means I am not that bad,” he said. Mr Pisirayi Kwenda of Kwenda and Associates, who came tops in the pre­interview test with 83 percent, responded to questions without any glitch. He explained to the panel why he thinks he could be a good judge. “I chaired various commissions of inquiry for local authorities. I was never influenced by public opinion and I decided my cases fairly and in terms of the law,” he said. Mr Kwenda is an experienced lawyer who worked in the Attorney General’s office and rose through the ranks to be head of the Appeals Section. He left for private practice and also presided over disputes as an arbitrator

Drama unfolded when a Murewa­based lawyer Mr Godfrey Macheyo got his chance to respond to questions. Mr Macheyo, a former regional magistrate, dug his own grave when he cited a High Court judgment to substantiate his claims that he had appeared in the superior courts representing clients. The judgment, in fact, blasted him for doing a disservice to his client and labelled him a liar and a lawyer who presented unhelpful arguments. He was attacked left, right and centre over the judgment by several commissioners who felt his conduct was unwarranted in that particular case. The interviews continue today with 10 others appearing before the commissioners

THE cash crisis gripping Zimbabwe continues to worsen, heaping untold misery on ordinary people who are forced to sleep on pavements at bank fronts waiting, mostly in futility, to access their money.

It’s also a double whammy for retired government workers who, in addition to being unable to access their money, have also seen their pay days delayed by weeks as the administration struggles to pay its workers.

Unaware that banks have no money, most of the pensioners travel long distances from their rural homes into cities and towns only to get stranded for days at the financial institutions without anyone explaining why they cannot access their funds.

Ironically, the crisis has been blamed on its proposed solution. Zimbabwe has long struggled with shortages of the US dollar resulting in the government, recently, proposing to introduce so-called bond notes to help ease the liquidity crunch.

And with the bond notes due to get into circulation early next month, many distrustful depositors have besieged banks to take their US dollars out, fearing the government is bringing back a local currency by stealth.

In Harare, last week, the CABS First Street Branch was forced to lock its automated teller machine (ATM) doors to customers on Thursday afternoon because of the unavailability of cash.Elsewhere, long queues could be seen at CBZ branches but it was the State-owned People’s Own Savings Bank (POSB) which was the hardest hit as most of its Harare outlets had no money.

The foreign-owned commercial banks appeared to be faring better as customers were beings served while the indigenous institutions were clearly struggling with long queues evident at most branches.

A survey by NewZimbabwe.com in the capital revealed that most of those queuing were pensioners over the age of 65 who did not even have a clue on why they could not get their money.

A retired teacher asked for a bottle of water from this reporter saying was hungry and thirsty as he lamented his plight.

I am coming from Epworth where I am staying with a relative because I live in Mt Darwin,” he said.

“I left Epworth around 0230 hours to get into town on foot because I do not have any money. I am now feeling very hungry because I have not had anything to eat since morning.“There is not even water to drink. No one is helping us as the bank staff have not even attended to us since we got here.”

Those who spoke to this publication refused to be identified, saying they feared possible victimisation by State agents.

“What I do not understand is that National Social Security Authority (NSSA) has deposited our money in POSB.

“So, what has happened to our money then? I have rates and bills to take care of and the situation is now confusing as I do not to know what really is taking place in this country,” said another pensioner from Chaona in Mazowe district.

Most said they had been sleeping pavements at bank fronts in the city and expressed disappointment at the failure by the authorities to explain why they couldn’t access their funds and when the situation could be expected to improve.

Why is the government punishing us?

“We are not sure when we will get our money,” said a pensioner from the capital.

“We have gone to all POSB outlets in town but, not even one has cash. We cannot just sit at home when we are supposed to be given our money that we worked for.

“Why is the government punishing us? All they want are votes but they do not care about our welfare. It seems like we are queuing for loans, as if we want to borrow money from the bank!”

A Headman from Guruve who only identified himself as Kazingizi was in tears as he said: “We have worked hard for this government but it does not care for us anymore.

“I have been at every POSB outlet today. Look at me, I am very old and cannot walk long distances.”

Most banks have imposed withdrawal limits while those who use mobile money services such as EcoCash and Mukuru.com were also reportedly failing to access money.

A black market has also emerged for the US dollar with those requiring bigger denomination notes such as $100 bills buying them for an extra $10 on the streets.

Mistake was made in 2009

The central bank has rejected suggestions that its drawn-out plan to introduce bond notes is worsening the cash crisis.

Reserve Bank governor John Mangudya last week blamed the crisis on the country importing far more than it exported.

“Foreign currency should be earned first. It is unfortunate that the people who make noise the most do not understand,” he said. “We need to increase production by coming up with good investment policies and then we can boost productivity.”

Mangudya described as a “mistake” Zimbabwe’s adoption of the US dollar in 2009 to replace the local currency which had been rendered worthless by hyperinflation.

“The major mistake was done in 2009 when Government liberalised the economy, which led to the use of the US dollar as a trading currency instead of a reserve currency. This resulted in some investors coming to Zimbabwe only for the US dollar and these took the money out.

“Since 2009, we gave an impression that Zimbabwe manufactured US dollars. The move taken in 2009 was dangerous. It was both economic and political and maybe we spent more time on the political side.”

INFORMATION minister Christopher Mushowe disclosed yesterday that the government had no plans to quit the United Nations (UN), although President Robert Mugabe is on record threatening Africa’s withdrawal from the world body.

On the sidelines of the UN 71st birthday celebrations in Harare yesterday that Mugabe had been quoted out of context, saying the Zanu PF leader was merely expressing African countries’ reservations over the composition of the UN Security Council.

“The President did not threaten to pull out of the UN, but merely outlined the concerns of the African Union over the composition of the Security Council. There needs to be reforms, which will see Africa getting a permanent seat and if Africa pulls out, it can’t be called the UN,” he said.

Mugabe, on his arrival from the 71st session of the UN General Assembly last month, told his Zanu PF supporters that he would mobilise other Africa States to pull out of the world body in protest.

The pull-out threat was made at a time the government is heavily dependent on UN and other multilateral donors for its infrastructural development, poverty and hunger alleviation in the face of a serious drought.

According to UN country coordinator, Bishow Parajuli, the world body had raised over $200 million to feed more than 1,5 million food-insecure people in Zimbabwe.

Parajuli said they were targeting to mobilise at least $352 million from the USA, France, China and Russia, among other donors, to help feed the 4,1 million Zimbabweans, who face hunger.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe Human Rights Association director, Okay Machisa, yesterday said human rights groups had gathered evidence of government’s alleged partisan distribution of food aid to benefit Zanu PF supporters.

Machisa was addressing a stakeholders’ meeting attended by several civic organisations and Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare minister Prisca Mupfumira.

“We have empirical evidence in as far as the partisan distribution of food is concerned. We have on record court issues that are running in Manicaland, with regard to discrimination when it comes to food aid,” he said.

In response, Mupfumira said: “On a distributing note, we have noted with concern the increased allegations by various media houses that the government food deficit mitigation programme is being run on partisan lines.”

National airline Air Zimbabwe has banned Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 smartphone from its flights with immediate effect.

After reports of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones catching fire spread in early September, a number of airlines around the world effected a ban on the phones. The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Dr Joram Gumbo, said following consultations, Air Zimbabwe had also taken a similar stance. “After consultations by the national airline, it’s been agreed that we follow the global stance by other airlines to ban the cellphone in our planes for the safety of passengers and our planes as well. “Air Zimbabwe will today (yesterday) start issuing out statements or notices to that effect so that our safety record remains intact,” he said.

According to the airline, Air Zimbabwe’s proud history hinges on its enviable safety record, the exceptional skills of its pilots, technical and ground staff and its strong in­flight customer services. The Galaxy Note 7 smartphone ban is meant to ensure that it maintains that record.

Samsung recalled around 2,5 million phones in September after complaints of exploding batteries. While it later insisted that all replaced devices were safe, there were reports that those phones were catching fire too. The company then said it would stop the production of Galaxy Note 7 phones. Carriers in Australia, Asia and Europe put the phone on a prohibited list in the past week, which comes after the US banned the device last week. The bans are spreading worldwide

Gospel musician and fashion designer Joyce Simeti (42) has died. She succumbed to a heart problem yesterday afternoon at Arcadia Medical Centre in Braeside.

The musician’s husband Stanley said she once suffered a heart problem few months ago but she had recovered. “At one time she had a heart problem but she recovered. I took her to work today (yesterday). She called me around 10 saying she needed to rest and we went home,” he said. He said her condition was stable until in the afternoon when she had to be rushed to hospital.

“We rushed her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival,” he said. The musician has been in the music business for the past 12 years and has seven albums to her name. Her first “Tose Takadanwa” was released in 2002 but it was her third album “Akusiya Haakurasi” from 2006, carrying hit “Kudza Baba Na Mai” that cemented her as a force on the local gospel scene. “Vana Vanokosha” from 2007 had a title track with the same name that proved relevant at the time when she was advocating for children’s rights while assisting at orphanages.

Mudzimai Akanaka” from “Ndichamupa Mbiri” (2009) was a favourite amongst women as it touched on the topical domestic issues that affects them on a daily basis. In 2011 she also released “Ndakanga Ndisipo”. She last made a public appearance at Sinach show last week. At the time of her death, she was an active musician at United Family International Church (UFIC). Mourners are gathered at number 27 Ambelside Road, Braeside. The Zimbabwe Republic Police, Zimbabwe Anti­Corruption Commission and the Auditor­General should move in to investigate Local Government Minister Saviour Kasukuwere over possible abuse of office and misleading President Mugabe about a $50 million pledge ostensibly made by Chiadzwa diamond firms towards the Marange­Zimunya Community Share Ownership Trust, legislators have said

The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment chaired by Gokwe Nembudziya MP Justice Mayor Wadyajena recommended that President Mugabe should establish a commission of enquiry led by a High Court judge to investigate the “intricate web of deceit,” by Minister Kasukuwere when he was still Minister of Youth Development, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment.

The committee’s report was tabled yesterday following more than two years of inquiry that entailed holding meetings with other Cabinet Ministers, representatives of diamond firms, Marange communities among others. In tabling the report, Wadyajena said it was important to note that his committee was constituted by 30 legislators, 21 of whom were from Zanu­PF while others were from MDC­T.

The report noted that President Mugabe was made to preside over the launch of the trust in Marange where he was presented a dummy cheque of $1,5 million purportedly coming from one of the diamond firms when no agreement had been reached between the concerned companies. Neither were there documents showing such a consensus.

“With the findings of this inquiry revealing clear deception bordering on criminal abuse of office, the committee calls upon the ZRP, ZACC, the Auditor­General and all relevant authorities to institute formal proceedings within 14 days from the adoption of this report to investigate the conduct of Honourable Minister Kasukuwere, officials from the Ministry of Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment, National Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Board as well as the respect accorded to the President and the chiefs in the area as reflected by the statements made by the villagers,” said Wadyajena while presenting the report.

“The committee further recommends that the President, HE Cde R.G. Mugabe establishes a commission of inquiry led by a judge or any other suitable candidate to investigate the intricate web of deceit, corruption and fraud related to the establishment and implementation of the trust. “Further, that particular attention must be paid to a likely covert strategy meant to discredit and malign the Office of the President.”

Wadyajena said all Cabinet Ministers they interviewed who included Cde Francis Nhema, Mines and Mining Development Minister Walter Chidhakwa, his predecessor Obert Mpofu, the then Manicaland Governor Christopher Mushohwe and diamond mining firms, professed ignorance about the existence of an agreement of $50 million pledge neither was there any documentation to that effect. “The committee is persuaded to conclude that the diamond mining companies never at any point pledged the $10 million apiece and the nation was misled by Hon Minister Kasukuwere. “There remains neither a clear paper trail nor recorded minutes between officials from the diamond mining companies and the Ministry of Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment,” said Wadyajena.

Before the presentation was made, there was a heated argument between legislators on one hand and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Mabel Chinomona and Clerk of Parliament Mr Kennedy Chokuda after the latter stopped the report’s presentation arguing that the Speaker of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda wanted to go through it first. Buhera South MP Joseph Chinotimba (Zanu­PF) said attempts to stop reports detailing corruption was the basis upon which people created the perception that Zanu­PF was covering up the vice. “President Mugabe and Zanu­PF do not condone corruption.

Recently, the leader of Government business this House (Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa) told this House that no one was above the law. Zanu­PF has been accused of protecting people. If Chinotimba commits a crime, he should be arrested. The Zimbabwe National Army has since weighed in to say corruption is now a cancer,” said Chinotimba. Chinomona later allowed the report to be tabled saying she was not aware that Adv Mudenda had since gone through it and cleared it.
