Job Sikhala to Chamisa: Popularity alone won’t be enough

Job Sikhala to Chamisa: Popularity alone won’t be enough. Sikhala said history was replete with popular politicians who later failed to land the number one job in national politics – including Morgan Tsvangirai.

MDC Alliance deputy national chairman Job Sikhala has advised his principal Nelson Chamisa not to think that popularity will guarantee him to become Zimbabwe’s next leader.

Sikhala said unpopular leaders often become State presidents because of their grit and decisiveness. He gave examples of Kenya’s Daniel Arap Moi and DRC’s Mobutu Sese Seko.

He said despite Chamisa and MDC Alliance commanding huge support in the country, State power remained a mirage for them.

In response, Chamisa said his party would eventually occupy State House even though he has been warned from analysts that he risks sinking into political oblivion if he does not respond appropriately to the onslaught from authorities and from the Thokozani Khupe faction.

ZIMRA impounds trucks over fuel smuggling

ZIMRA impounds trucks over fuel smuggling. The Harare-based owner of the trucks, Ronald Ajara confirmed the incident saying the trucks were held at Chirundu Border Post on Monday. The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has impounded five of their trucks belonging to a local company, Ajara Trucking over alleged smuggling of fuel.

Anonymous sources told Zim Morning Post that the trucks entered the country with thousands of litres of fuel purportedly in transit to Zambia but the contents were emptied in Willowvale, Harare and replaced with water. It is alleged that for a prolonged period of time, Zimra has not been charging excise duty for the fuel at the point of entry as the cargos were said to be destined for Zambia.

The matter reportedly came to light when one of the company’s drivers, disgruntled over harsh working conditions, spilt the beans to Zimra. The anonymous source said: One of his drivers who were disgruntled over welfare issues tipped Zimra regarding the fuel scam leading to the trucks being impounded.

Zim Morning Post contacted Ajara for a comment over the matter and he confirmed that the trucks had been impounded but denied that he was defrauding the state of revenue.

He also said his trucks had been released adding that “Zimra took the trucks and conducted their checks. After seeing that everything was above board the trucks were released.” In 2017, Zimra started tracking cargo coming into and out of the country in a bid to curb transit fraud including cargo diversions.

Villagers demand punishment of businessman blaming him for army civilian killings. This comes after two drunk soldiers reportedly shot and killed two locals Morgan Zhuzha Sibanda and Dumisani Mpofu from Chisuma Village which is just outside Victoria Falls.

Victoria Falls villagers want businessman Munyaradzi Mlauzi evicted and charged for allegedly aiding soldiers in terrorising and killing civilians in the resort town.

Acting Chief Mvutu, Bishop Sibanda of Victoria Falls is expected to file court papers seeking to formally evict Mr Mlauzi from the community and have him charged as an accomplice in the recent alleged murder of two villagers. Hwange West MP Godfrey Dube said the truth has to be told for the people to find closure on the matter. He added:

The businessman involved in this must not set foot in the area again. That’s enough. The chief will be doing papers to send to court because that man is an accomplice and should be charged too.

Chisuma Villagers accuse Mlauzi of using security forces to terrorise people, he has since disappeared as villagers bay for his blood. They have also reportedly petitioned the army to vacate its temporary base at Chisuma Primary School.

Things that happen in Zimbabwe: Public Prosecutor contesting in ZANU PF elections

Things that happen in Zimbabwe: Public Prosecutor contesting in ZANU PF elections. Zimbabwean prominent journalist Hopewell Chin’ono has said the participation of Public Prosecutor Namatirai Chipere in ZANU PF elections in a violation of the national Constitution.

Chin’ono speaks after it had emerged that Chipere intends to be the secretary for legal affairs for ZANU PF’s Gweru District Coordination Committee (DCC). He said: A Zimbabwean public prosecutor Namatirai Chipere is contesting in ZANUPF elections in violation of s.261(3) of the Zimbabwean Constitution, which clearly says that “…officers of the National Prosecuting Authority may NOT be active members of any political party.”

Now that the constitution has been broken again, what will ZANUPF defenders say when I repeat again that there is NO Rule of Law in Zimbabwe? Would I get a fair trial before such an openly partisan prosecutor? Do you now understand what we mean when we say the judiciary and NPA are captured and are partisan?

Tragic reality indeed 40 years after independence! At least Robert Mugabe pretended to be law-abiding, not his coup lot! This comes amid claims by analysts and the opposition that the ruling party has captured a number of state institutions including courts, police, army, media and anti-corruption units.

Idols SA host ProVerb has opened up a great deal about his private life and attempts to take his own life.

The popular musician and producer of the number one singing competition in the country revealed these surprising details in his book titled Book of ProVerb.

Here is what we know about some of the shocking revelations:

In the book, ProVerb, whose real name is Tebogo Thekiso, details a time where his mental health was at its lowest point. The star writes that he tried to commit suicide following the end of his marriage of 10 years. In 2015, ProVerb revealed on social media that ex-wife Onalerona Thekiso had cheated on him with controversial businessman Edwin Sodi.

The couple did try to reconcile but decided in the end to get a divorce. In the book, the Kaya FM radio host says during that time he felt a sense of failure not only for himself but for their children too. He explains that he brought strong painkillers from three different pharmacies when he got home, he hugged his estranged wife, went to the patio in their home, and swallowed all pills with a bottle of wine. The cheating scandal was big news at the time, the alleged affair started in 2013, the couple eventually divorced in 2016. Gweru lesbian pastor sentenced to 11 years in jail

Gweru lesbian pastor sentenced to 11 years in jail. The court proved that Juliet Masakanire (29), the founder and pastor of Pray Deliverance and Testimony Ministries International, molested a 32-year-old member of her congregation. A Gweru prophetess has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for molesting a female member of her church.

Masakanire appeared before Gweru Regional magistrate Mrs Pathekhile Msipa facing two counts of indecent assault and one count of aggravated indecent assault. She pleaded not guilty to the three charges. However, Mrs Msipa convicted her of the three charges following a full trial.

Masakanire was sentenced to two years in prison for count one and two and nine years in prison for count three. She will however serve nine years in prison after two years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

In passing sentence, Mrs Msipa said Masakanire as a woman of the cloth should have protected the complainant who was looking up to her as her shepherdess.

“The accused was the pastor of the complainant who placed her trust and faith in her and her prophecies. Instead of looking after her, she turned into her abuser and courts should give long custodial sentences to deter would-be offenders.

“The accused is sentenced to two years on the first two counts and nine years on the third count. “Two years are suspended on condition of good behaviour,” she said. Prosecutor, Mr Talent Tadenyika told the court sometime in January, the accused person was looking for accommodation and the complainant offered to accommodate her temporarily.

The duo used to share the same bed. The court heard that during the same month, Masakanire prophesied that the complainant was going to get married to a husband by the name of Stanley Chinyonga.

Each night since the day of the prophecy, Masakanire started to speak to the complainant in a male voice saying she was Stanley Chinyonga and wanted to marry her.

The court heard that on an unknown date during the month of February, Masakanire woke up during the night and introduced herself as Stanley Chinyonga and started kissing and caressing the complainant. The complainant tried to resist but she was overpowered. The accused person inserted her fingers into her private parts.

She did that on four different occasions and threatened her against telling anyone saying if she did, she would not meet her future husband. On June 28 the complainant, the court heard, informed a church mate before the matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of the accused person.

Shock as murder gang presents victim’s body to police

Shock as murder gang presents victim’s body to police. The incident happened on Thursday last week at Cement Siding in Bulawayo. After noticing that one of the torture victims had died, the accused persons handed themselves over to the police by taking the lifeless body of the now-deceased Kelvin Sibanda (27) to Queenspark Police Station base at Cement Siding, leading to their arrest.

Five artisanal miners assaulted and tortured two brothers with an electric shocker resulting in the death of one of the siblings before the gang handed themselves to the police along with the dead body. The second sibling sustained serious body injuries and is admitted to the United Bulawayo Hospitals.

The accused persons, Phathisani Sibanda (30), Joachim Mangena (24), Shelton Ndlovu (25) Lizwe Ndlovu (31) and a juvenile who cannot be named for legal reasons were yesterday not asked to plead when they appeared before the Bulawayo magistrate Mr Sheperd Munjanja charged with murder and attempted murder.

The magistrate advised them through their lawyer Sifelani Mguni of R Ndlovu & Company legal practitioners to apply for bail at the High Court as they have committed a serious crime that led to the loss of a life.

The accused persons are all employed by Big Four Mine Syndicate as artisanal miners at Cement Siding. They were remanded in custody to October 29 for both crimes.  Prosecuting, Mr Terrence Chakabuda told the court that the accused persons proceeded to Kandale Farm/Homestead in Cement Siding where they met the now-deceased Kelvin who was in the company of his elder brother Clifford Sibanda (32) who is a complainant in the attempted murder crime.

“The accused persons met the two brothers at Kandale Farm/Homestead and they inquired why they had assaulted their brother of which the siblings professed ignorance and denied the accusations. The accused persons became violent and started assaulting the now deceased and his brother using wooden logs and torturing them using an electric shocker all over their bodies while threatening to kill them with a knife,” said Mr Chakabuda.

The court was told that while they were assaulting the siblings, one of the accused persons drew a knife and used it to cut the dreadlocks of the deceased who was wailing in agony.

“The assault and torture continued for quite some time leading to one of the siblings who had his dreadlocks cut using a knife succumbing to injuries inflicted on him and Clifford sustained internal back and head injuries as well as a swollen face,” Mr Chakabuda said.

Clifford was ferried to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for medical attention where he is still admitted. The electric shocker and a knife used to cut the now deceased’s dreadlocks were recovered.

ZRP appoint acting CID director. Charumbira (49), who is out on $10 000 bail pending trial, was suspended from his duties pending finalisation of his trial.

Police have with immediate effect appointed an assistant commissioner as acting Criminal Investigations Department (CID) director to steer the department’s operations following the suspension of Commissioner Chrispen Charumbira after his recent arrest on charges of criminal abuse of office.

According to a leaked memorandum from the police, there are transfers looming in the police but Assistant Commissioner Sipo James Makone, will remain at CID HQ as acting director.

“The following transfers have been approved and should be implemented accordingly; AC SJ Makone to remain at CID HQ as acting director,” read part of the memo.

The developments come after the Special Anti-Corruption Unit (SACU) is also investigating three more cases against Charumbira (49), in addition to the other three counts he is facing of attempting to defeat the course of justice.

Three more people recently had statements on criminal abuse of office against the senior officer recorded by SACU .

Recently, prosecutor Mr Michael Reza alleged that on December 17, 2015, Detectives Ndlovu, Mbundire and Munyandure — all of CID Drugs, Harare — received information that one Charles Chabata Magolise had dangerous drugs at his place of residence.

The team reacted and conducted a search, which led to the recovery of 443 grammes of dagga and subsequent arrest of Magolise.

Babes Wodumo’s weight loss photo raises concerns

Babes Wodumo‘s massive weight loss has become a trending topic again! This follows after a recent snap where she is posing with Dladla Mshunqisi and DJ Sox, has raised eyebrows.

A Twitter user shared the snap on Twitter with the caption “What happened to Babes Wodumo” accompanied by a broken heart emoji.

Tweeps commented on the post sharing their different views, and some defended Babes, saying people should stop mocking her for her weight loss because they do not know why the musician has lost weight.

This is not the first time Babes Wodumo’s weight loss has got tongues wagging. The self-proclaimed queen of Gqom recently trended after a snap of her showing her drastic weight loss with her boyfriend Mampintsha, went viral on social media.

Mampintsha also had fans shocked to the core when a video of him showing his massive weight loss went viral on social media. Speaking to Ilanga Langesonto, the musician decided to set the record straight and said he decided to pursue a healthy eating routine.

Babes recently received her platinum plaque for the aforementioned debut album and she reflected on her past.

“I was pretty wild in my younger days and you don’t have to do what I did. You don’t have to make the mistakes I made. The future’s in your hands now. And the world really is yours. It’s been really hectic lately and I never got a chance to officially thank you’ll formally. Dreams delayed are never Dreams denied. Fast forward 5 years later #GqomQueenGoesMultiPlatinum,” she wrote.

The musician recently released the second album Idandokazi, many have reckoned that she is back by popular demand. It is no secret that Babes had a controversial 2019 which saw her fall from grace, but she has recovered from all the drama.

This follows her tumultuous relationship with Mampintsha, which saw her being assaulted by Mampinthsa in a live video, and her social media accounts getting hacked.

The singer recently trended on social media after she went live on Instagram with Durban-based entertainer Tha Simelane who accused her of allegedly taking cocaine. Speaking to ZAlebs Babes said she has decided to pursue a legal route to sue him, for defamation of character but said she could not divulge too much information about the case as it is being handled by the police.

“Tha’s case is still being handled by the SAPS which I can’t really say anything much about it,” she said.

Three suspected armed robbers who were armed with a pistol and machetes raided an apostolic shrine and kidnapped one of the congregants before they later attacked nine other people at a cemetery in Beitbridge last week.

Police are also investigating a case in which an earth-moving machine that was stolen at gunpoint in South Africa, was recovered in Beitbridge while being loaded on to a cargo truck. National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed all the incidents.

“Police in Beitbridge are investigating two cases of armed robberies which occurred on October 7, 2020. Three unknown men stormed an apostolic church shrine at the new stands in Beitbridge, armed with an unidentified pistol and machetes before kidnapping one of the complainants.” Investigations on the cases are still in progress and no arrests have since been made so far.

Generations: The Legacy speaks on actress Zoe Mthiyane’s issue

Actress Zoe Mthiyane’s personal life and career has been in the spotlight for the past month for all the wrong reasons.

It has also been confirmed that actress’ contract has not been renewed on the soapie.

Her departure from Generations: The Legacy has been confirmed and including the ending of her relationship with former co-star Rapulana Seiphemo. News of the break-up came after Mthiyane confirmed that she ended the relationship in a City Press report.

There have been media reports that the ending of the relationship has taken a toll on her with her career suffering in the process. Speaking to The Citizen, Generations publicist Nandipha Phansi confirmed that the actress’ contract has not been renewed but would not delve into the allegations that the actress was fired or that her behaviour was the reason for her departure.

Media reports claimed that Mthiyane was abusing alcohol and was suspended from work after arriving on set intoxicated. Phansi said: “I am not aware of these allegations on our side and they are not true.” She added that the actress character Zitha won’t be recast.

Mthiyane and Seiphemo’s break up also came as a surprise. The couple has been together since 2017. Seiphemo now stars in The Queen on Mzansi Magic. The couple has kept their relationship largely private, with only a few sightings of them in the past.

She has previously shared troubles with former partner, sports broadcaster Robert Marawa. In 2015 she released an open letter claiming that Marawa was an absent father to their son.

Mthiyane said in the letter: “I have attempted, on numerous occasions to involve you in your son’s life, before I left South Africa and during my stay in Australia. I have sent pictures, videos, called and emailed you, my son never heard from you.”

Opinion: Economics of Politics, the RBZ needs autonomy

Opinion: Economics of Politics, the RBZ needs autonomy. Among a myriad of assertions by Dr Gono to portray himself as the saviour of a nation beset with the world’s highest inflation percentage at the time, one that caught my attention was that he pleaded lack of independence to set the tone for monetary fundamentals.

Former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor, Dr Gideon Gono, recently appeared on Zimbabwean entrepreneur and newspaper publisher Trevor Ncube’s discussion series. Not that I expected the RBZ, or any state-owned central bank for that matter, to function totally self-regulating and without ruling government’s policy tentacles, but it is the extent to which he claimed such control obtained (and likely remains still) that left me astounded.

If he is to be believed, during his tenure he literally carried a big rubber stamp for political decisions sanitised as economics derived. Economics of politics. This lack of autonomy engenders several challenges, as will be expounded at length in this piece.

For reference, any business school course will invariably tell you the functions of a central bank under normal circumstances are monetary policies. These include, among others, to issue money (notes and coins) and ensure people have faith in notes which are printed like protect against forgery. Printing money is also an important responsibility because this has a direct bearing on inflation, which is the general rise (or decline) of prices over a given period of time.

The central bank should independently be the supervisor in chief of all commercial banks staving them off of malpractice to avert their collapse with depositor funds. It thus becomes a lender of last resort to these banks as well, if need be, when they get into liquidity shortages, maintaining confidence in the banking system.

It is also a lender of last resort to the government, borrowing on the open market through selling bonds and treasury bills (simply, loans to the central bank at a pre-set interest payable in a pre-set time) to finance government projects and needs. The phrase “of last resort” in both occasions should be emphasised.

Yet because no such independence existed (and still may not) political manoeuvring was the order of the day at RBZ. Under Dr Gono’s tenure, the newest bank licences were issued (to politically connected cronies mostly).

Such banks as Century Bank, Rapid Discount House, Sagit Finance House, Genesis Investment Bank and Trust Bank got licences to open retail banks and receive depositor funds.

It goes without saying that politics led economics in determining who got a banking licence under RBZ. Laid down stress-tests for viability were likely conducted with favour as all these new banks opened were later to shut down within Dr Gono’s very tenure.

This caused untold suffering to depositors who lost their money as well as to the fiscus in general as some of the banks received copious amounts of money as “bail outs” from the RBZ which were never recovered.

Other banks even had to be placed under “curatorship”, with some government arms being arm twisted to invest in (like the National Social Security Authority NSSA), or at least conduct business through them (like Zimbabwe National Road Administration ZINARA).

Yet the banks still went under, as indeed they should have, since they were not being run according to best banking practice which any competent and independent central bank should have picked up.

A reserve bank does inflation targeting since low inflation helps to create greater economic stability and preserves the value of money and savings. This it does by controlling how much it should print guided by complex macroeconomic indicator calculations that consider such hard factors as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), productivity, balance of payment, current national debt, Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the like.

Other abstract factors are considered like national objectives and poverty levels. The ultimate aim is such that there should be just enough money to stimulate and sustain economic growth, therefore improve people’s welfare, achieve national economic targets like growth and unemployment, as well as control money in circulation without negatively affecting productivity such that inflation ensues. Nothing more.

Now, under Dr Gono the RBZ became almost a pseudo Finance Ministry unto itself as its mandate morphed beyond monetary policies to include fiscal operations as well.

This is a concern because the firstly the Finance Ministry, to which the RBZ reports to, should ordinarily take care of economic affairs, investment, finance planning, resilience, sustainable development and has responsibility for ensuring that the public finances are maintained in a satisfactory condition and for monitoring fiscal and economic performance.

The work of the Ministry is pursued partly through its oversight responsibility for resource allocation in the budget (capital and recurrent) for implementation of the work programmes of other individual Ministries.

Secondly, this then meant the political meddling puffed up an arm of the Finance Ministry into the biggest “Ministry” in the land. Imagine how ridiculous it would sound if the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA), which is another of many arms under the Ministry of Finance, was to be equally aggrandised to levels higher than the Ministry and it begins to handle its own responsibilities to collect money through taxes for the Consolidated Revenue Fund and then also conducts fiscal policy? The Commissioner-General of ZIMRA becoming so powerful his reports chart the macro-economic course for the whole nation? Ridiculous.

At that time the RBZ became so influential it took roles of releasing of funds to other Ministries/Departments in accordance with parliamentary allocations, determination and presentation of annual estimates of revenue and expenditures, preparation of development plans, strategies and projects, monitoring of economic performance, preparation of economic forecasts and analytical reports, providing advice to Government on economic and financial matters, charting the direction of macroeconomic policy among others. All these are ordinarily Ministry of Finance functions.

The governor’s monetary policy announcement became the indicator of the Mugabe administration’s policy direction and drowned out the more comprehensive fiscal policy by the Minister of Finance.

Dr Hebert Murerwa who was the Minister of Finance in 2003 when Dr Gono’s two terms began had to be removed from the post as they had frictions over this, with his supposed subordinate. The Deputy Finance Minister, Christopher Kuruneri was then promoted to substantive Minister after Dr Murerwa left. He too only lasted a record two months before swapping that plush office for a jail cell and Dr Murerwa being recalled to his former post.

Dr Murerwa’s second tenure was to last under three years and succeeding Samuel Mumbengegwi lasted under a year. Tendai Biti lasted a “long” four years as the Dr Gono’s “boss” as he was an imposition of the Government of National Unity (GNU), where the Government’s two belligerent political parties of Zimbabwe, (ZANU PF) and (MDC) came together to form one government to turn round the country’s economic mess, in which the RBZ is very culpable.

So politically powerful became Dr Gono that he was colloquially referred to as “The Prime Minister” in corridors of power. Let it sink in that Zimbabwe is a republic with an Executive President as its head and has no post of Prime Minister in a legal sense, but such had become the all powerful RBZ governor because of umbilical connection the RBZ had developed with the ruling political party.

So here we observe that the RBZ became powerful politically, and Dr Gono will have us believe he worked under political instruction. By insinuation, he indicated to Ncube in the discussion that his hands were tied and went on to quote sections of the RBZ Act [Chapter 22:15] and the Finance Act [Chapter 23:04] that gave power to the president to order the fiscal activities.

It is neither here nor there if he had become politically powerful or a dependent appendage of politics, the final analysis will always be that him and the RBZ eventually practiced economics of politics as the lack of autonomy or the political interference (whichever applied) led to wrong decisions which exacerbated Zimbabwe’s dire economic situation.

In the interview Dr Gono suggested that an RBZ governor should be picked by his peers and report to parliament not to the Finance Minister. Though this is well-intentioned as its the august house anyway that sets the laws of the land and thus likewise can supervise the land’s purse holder in form of RBZ, I do not see any leader diluting his or her power and allowing parliament to usurp such a central institution from their grasp.

notwithstanding the fact that the very parliament may not have its sympathies with him or her as it may be made up of opposition party members regardless of their composition or their numbers.

Indeed, at some point in the discussion with Mr Ncube, Dr Gono confesses that in 2009 his governorship of the economics institution became a very political topic.

Under the tenure of the GNU, MDC felt the ZANU PF was now using the RBZ to further ruling party interests at the expense of national wellbeing. As such they wrote up a list of 29 demands which they wanted rectified threatening to pull out of the unity government. Chief among those was the demand that “Gono Must Go.”

Politics had picked Dr Gono for governorship. He says he was offered the role by the current president of the Republic of Zimbabwe who was acting Finance Minister at the time, H.E. Emmerson Mnangagwa. Politics sustained his office and now politics threatened his tenure.

Insofar as he survived this scare it is a given that his decisions henceforth became political appeasements more than guided by economic indicators. This puts paid to my cry that the RBZ needs more independence than it currently enjoys.

History has recorded these decisions which Dr Gono took during his two term office tenure from 2003 to 2013 and when looked at from an economics perspective truly have no precedent before and have had no follower since.

At the time they became known as “quasi-fiscal activities” to give the political actions a modicum of economics dignity. Mind you this was the time of impositions of sanctions by the western nations on the Robert Mugabe administration as punishment for land appropriations.

This was also the time the newly resettled farmers were agitating for governmental assistance to set up their new found farming “business.” By insinuation, Gono indicated to Ncube in the discussion that money was printed, regardless of economic indicators, to fund “farm mechanisations” at the instruction of the then president.

There is a reason why In April 2016, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its conference entitled “Rethinking Macro Policy” the general consensus found that central banks should retain full independence with respect to traditional monetary policy. Technical decisions need technical reasoning hence should remain undiluted as technical processes.

After all, politicians are driven by need to please supporters, with one eye always on remaining in power (plus the ever-tempting desire to line their own pockets at the expense of their citizens’ purchasing power). Their assessment is not always for the economy but for personal survival.

This has led to brutal hyperinflation in countries like Argentina, Hungary, pre-WWII Germany and indeed Zimbabwe where Government figures show Zimbabwe’s peak inflation rate was 79.6 billion percent month-on-month and 89.7 sextillion percent year-on-year in mid-November 2009.

Hyperinflation only ended the following year with the adoption of the US dollar. It is paramount to note that US dollar fundamentals are beyond the purview of RBZ but of the US Federal Reserve. A massive indictment of the former.

There is a reason why nations that have privatised their central banks, leaving limited or no state ownership in them, seem to do comparatively better than state owned ones at managing monetary matters. Simply, they act in the interest of their mandates with miniscule and manageable state influence, if any.

Examples of privately owned central banks include the South African Reserve Bank which was privatised from its inception in 1921, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand nationalised in 1935, Bank of France and Bank of England both nationalised in 1946, Bank of Spain1962, Bank of Portugal 1974, National Bank of Angola 1975 and the National Bank of Austria privatised in 2010, among many others.

If RBZ cannot be privatised at least it should be rid of economics of politics and adhere to its true mandates and use that independence to fulfil them. The instruments it deploys in such autonomous conditions, and the safeguards that accompany them, will be commensurate with the nature of the challenges it faces, not to for political expediency. As such, it is crucial that the central bank is at all times autonomous, transparent and accountable in its actions, to economics, not to politics.

Civil servants to be paid a minimum of $12 000. The PSC Permanent Secretary Ambassador J. Wutawunashe issued a statement on Wednesday saying, “The Public Service Commission is pleased to advise Government workers that the USD 75 Covid 19 allowance for September 2020 is being paid today.

The Public Service Commission has announced that civil servants will be paid a minimum salary of ZWL 12 591.15. Going forward, the USD 75 Covid allowance will be paid on pay days. This effectively means that the least paid worker (B1) is now earning ZWL 141 350.16 monthly, while a teacher at entry grade (D1) earns a total of ZWL 12 591.15.”

The Ambassador added that the government was grateful to the civil servants who were rendering services regardless of the difficult challenges. “The USD 75 allowance is indexed to the prevailing RBZ foreign exchange auction rate. The government would like to record its appreciation for civil servants in all categories who continue to render services to the citizens of Zimbabwe.

Government is committed to continuously improve the working conditions of civil servants, and hopes that negotiations in the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC) to further improve emoluments for civil servants will be concluded soon.”

Report: Nelson Chamisa turned down Mnangagwa offer?

Report: Nelson Chamisa turned down Mnangagwa offer? Chamisa said he snubbed the offer, saying he would rather stand with the oppressed people than wine and dine with ruling party elites as opposition leader in Parliament.

Embattled opposition MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa has sensationally claimed that after rigging the 2018 presidential poll, President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government dangled lucrative perks to him so that he could dump his electoral challenge.

The opposition leader made the disclosure at the funeral of the late recalled MP Annah Muyambo Mpofu in Chitungwiza at the weekend. He vowed to resist the trappings of power and material possessions at the expense of the people’s struggle.

The MDC Alliance leader, who has since lost control of the MDC party headquarters, and 32 parliamentary seats to the rival MDCT camp led by Thokozani Khupe whom he trounced in the 2018 elections, said he would continue standing firm and not give in to Zanu-PF’s machinations to destroy his party.

Chamisa said Mnangagwa had offered him State security aides, a motorcade, and an office among other attractive benefits as leader of the opposition soon after the disputed 2018 harmonised elections.

The perks that Chamisa snubbed were now likely going to be enjoyed by Khupe, who was sworn in last week as Member of Parliament and leader of the opposition in Parliament.  “They came to me and said they would give me a motorcade, vehicles, perks and bodyguards, but I refused saying life is not all about that,” Chamisa said.

“It is about legacy and sacrifice for the good of the people. I told them they can take anything from us, but let us remain with the people and that way we will get where we want to be.”

Chamisa added: “We are not in politics for money or positions. Those who want money can go where the money is. We are here for the people and we will stand with the people knowing that ultimately, the power of the people will prevail.”

Presidential spokesperson George Charamba confirmed on his official Twitter handle that Chamisa would have benefited from the post of leader of the opposition had he not snubbed the offer.

He said there was nothing amiss about perks for opposition members as it was meant to “engender collaborative national politics in the country”.

“The idea of providing and pegging perks for the leader of the opposition predates rancour in the opposition. As a matter of fact, it is meant to align Zimbabwe’s practices to those obtaining in most Commonwealth countries, and of course to engender collaborative national politics in the country.

“As a matter of fact, Chamisa would have been the first beneficiary had he not snubbed the idea in favour of adversarial post-election politics which has landed him in the current slough. It doesn’t make sense or intelligence to personalise a measure mooted on the basis of precedence elsewhere in the world, and one likely to be realized in terms of a law passed by the Parliament of Zimbabwe to which the opposition is a party,” Charamba tweeted.

At the same funeral wake in Chitungwiza, Zengeza West MP Job Sikhala told mourners that it was time for the MDC Alliance leadership to realise that popularity alone did not translate into State power.

“Popularity does not win power. There were leaders who were unpopular in the world who ruled for decades. (The late former President Robert) Mugabe was the most unpopular leader, but he ruled for 37 years. Morgan Tsvangirai (the late MDC-T leader) was the most popular leader since the advent of politics in the whole world, but he died without leading,” Sikhala said.

“We have 2,6 million votes, meaning our president and party are the most popular brands in the political matrix of Zimbabwe, but we are not in power. ED is unpopular, but he is in power. My sister Khupe, even reptiles and dogs do not want to see her, but she is in power. Power is now being controlled by the unpopular while the popular ones are not in power,” he added, urging the party to restrategise.

Meanwhile, the MDC Alliance yesterday presented its audited financial statements for the seven months ended December 31, 2019, whose major findings revealed that the party received more than $6, 2 million from its party membership and government from May 27 to December 2019.

The audit was carried out by Auditax Chartered Accountants in Zimbabwe following reports of abuse of funds by Chamisa’s former lieutenants who have defected to Khupe’s party.

“The directors have assessed the ability of the party to continue operating as a going concern and believe that the preparation of these financial statements on a going concern basis is still appropriate. However, the directors believe that under the current economic environment a continuous assessment of the ability of the party to continue to operate as a going concern will need to be performed to determine the continued appropriateness of the going concern assumption that has been applied in the preparation of these financial statements,” the auditors said.

The party this year failed to access its share of funds under the Political Parties (Finance) Act after the $7 million earmarked for the MDC Alliance was diverted to Khupe’s MDC-T. Since then the MDC Alliance has been struggling to meet running costs.
