Econet to marginally adjusts voice bundle tariffs

Econet to marginally adjusts voice bundle tariffs. The telecommunications giant, which has invested over US$1,3 billion in infrastructure since 2009, told customers in a notice that it would “review its Bundle of Joy voice bundles on Wednesday 25 November 2020”.

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe (Econet) this week marginally adjusted its voice bundle tariffs in a bid to guarantee continued delivery of acceptable service to its customers. However, the popular daily voice bundle – previously pegged at ZW$6.00 or (US$0.07) for two minutes – has been reviewed upwards by only 20 percent – way below the annual inflation rate of 475.21 percent for October 2020.

The latest tariff adjustment comes at a time when the government is banking on increased infrastructure development in the information and communication technologies (ICTs) sector to achieve its Vision 2030 targets.

ICT minister, Jenfan Muswere, last week said that it was critical that the telecommunications sector plays its part in improving Zimbabwe’s digital capabilities, especially with regards to ensuring universal access. He said:

Without a robust ICT sector, it follows that the dream of an all-inclusive and economically vibrant nation remains a pipe dream.

Without access to ICTs, people cannot actively participate in the socio-economic development agenda of the country. Access to ICTs is therefore not a luxury and a preserve for the elite… We need to catch up with technology, in particular 5G, for which we need a road map and strategy, or else we remain digital laggards.

Analysts said for this dream to become a reality, the government must approve cost-reflective tariffs and reduce taxes to allow telecommunication firms to continuously re-invest in their businesses and in the industry.

Economic analyst Francis Mukora said current market economic fundamentals were stifling growth in the country’s high capital-intensive telecoms industry, which constantly requires a steady flow of investments into networks, spectrum, towers and new technology. He said:

Contrary to the popular belief that capital injection into the telecommunications industry is a once-off investment, companies have to constantly pour in money to upgrade networks, pay software licenses, buy fibre, radio, and towers, among other things.

And for the industry to survive there is need for sustainable data, voice and SMS tariffs as well as tax breaks.

Zimbabwe’s telecommunications sector – dominated by Econet, NetOne, Telecel, TelOne and Liquid-ZOL – is reeling from hyperinflation, declining capital expenditure, rising operating costs and stiff competition from over-the-top services, among other challenges.

Economist Victor Bhoroma said the recent increase in electricity charges also negatively affected the delivery of efficient and quality services to customers in the telecommunications industry. He said:

The increase in electricity prices, approved by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority for November 2020, by 50 percent, will undoubtedly have an impact on the prices of goods and services in the market. Prices will increase sharply in Zimbabwean dollars and slightly in United States Dollars.

Households will feel the greatest pinch given the fact that wages have not been adjusted in line with the inflation rate and many are earning below the Poverty Datum Line (PDL) which is around ZW$24 000 for a family of six.

National power utility Zesa Holdings has already increased electricity tariffs by more than 150 percent in the last two months. Bhoroma, however, said electricity prices have been affected by inflation, with Zesa failing to pay for coal supplies locally and from regional suppliers such as Eskom in foreign currency.

He said it was imperative for ZESA to adjust prices gradually so as to break even or fully fund imports without accruing debt. Bhoroma added that the tariff has to be cost-reflective at all the times in order to guarantee a stable power supply.

Grace Mugabe’s PhD case: Court sets aside full week for UZ Vice-chancellor Nyagura trial. CHIEF magistrate Munamato Mutevedzi has set aside a full week for the trial of former University of Zimbabwe (UZ) vice-chancellor Levi Nyagura, who is being accused of unprocedural awarding former First Lady Grace Mugabe with a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (PhD).

Nyagura’s trial, which had been set for yesterday, failed to kick off because his lawyer Tawanda Zhuwarara was engaged at the High Court. The trial will
now run from January 11 to 15, 2021.

After several postponements, Mutevedzi yesterday threatened to slate it for Sunday since Zhuwarara has other engagements at the High Court. The trial had also been postponed to Saturday, but prosecutor Tapiwa Godzi said he had other commitments on the day.

The State alleges that sometime in 2011, Nyagura undermined the authority of the UZ departmental board and the faculty higher degrees committee and personally accepted and approved Grace’s application to study for a PhD in sociology which was against academic guidelines and values of the university.

He allegedly abused his position since Grace did not meet the minimum requirements to study for the degree. Grace was conferred with the PhD in 2014.

President Mnangagwa set to tighten COVID-19 lockdown measures

President Mnangagwa set to tighten COVID-19 lockdown measures. In a post-Cabinet media briefing, Tourism and Environment minister Nqobizitha Mangaliso Ndlovu said the government was concerned about the spike in COVID-19 cases, adding that tougher enforcement measures were now pivotal.

Government yesterday announced that it would enforce tighter COVID-19 lockdown measures and a curfew after COVID-19 cases soared to 9 308 on Monday.

“The enforcement of lockdown measures will be intensified henceforth. It should be emphasised that where there is non-compliance to these regulations the law enforcement agents will not hesitate to enforce the penalties prescribed,” Ndlovu said.

Schools have been the hardest hit by the sharp increase in COVID-19 cases, especially boarding facilities, with John Tallach High School in Matabeleland North last week recording 121 cases.

The government said it was moving in, especially at schools to ensure that the virus was brought under control. “Cabinet notes that a number of COVID-19 cases were reported at learning institutions following the full reopening of schools. The nation is advised

that measures have been put in place to strengthen protective and preventative measures in boarding school environments,” he said. The government ordered phase three opening of schools and reopening of institutions of higher learning and industry and commerce after five months of lockdown.

Ndlovu said government’s worry was that many people appeared to be relaxed, which government feared could trigger a second wave of COVID-19 which has been deadly in other countries.

He said government noted with concern that there had been a rapid increase in COVID-19 cases in the past three weeks, adding that beerhalls, casinos and betting shops should close. Meanwhile, Health deputy minister John Mangwiro said there was need to continue to test people in order to fish out those that might be infected, but were asymptomatic.

“We will upscale tracing of contacts and make sure that people are aware that they can carry the virus but may not know that they have it. We need to keep asking people to be more careful,” Mangwiro said.

Obviously, fans couldn’t be satisfied by Duduzane’s response to the rumours and wanted also to hear it out of the queen’s mouth!

Actress Thuli Phongolo has hit back at rumours about dating Duduzane Zuma, saying she does not know the controversial businessman.

Thuli set the record straight on Twitter after one user said Duduzane’s denial of the pair’s relationship in a recent interview with Mac-G was suspicious.

In the interview, Duduzane denied knowing Thuli, saying he is used to rumours being spread about him and that he has never met her.

The actress replied to the Twitter user, saying she has never met former president Jacob Zuma‘s son.

She said her fans did not know what they wanted and that they were reaching by trying to make her and Duduzane a thing.

Rumours that the two were dating starting making the rounds on social media after Thuli apparently posted a now-deleted picture of a man who reportedly has the same tattoo as Duduzane.

Earlier this month, Thuli laughed off the rumours, saying she was now scared to post because people go as far as “investigating” tattoos.

“Sesisaba nokuposta ke manje ngoba investigata nama-tattoo phela nina, iindaba zabantu nizazi ukundlula yezenu,” she said, which translates to “we are afraid of even posting now because you guys investigate tattoos and you know people’s business better than you know yours!”

Minnie Dlamini shook the internet today when she posted a picture of her post-baby bod. The TV presenter recently gave birth to a bouncing baby boy more than a week ago but her body is all sorts of flames.

Netha Makhosini Jones‘s mother broke the internet after she posted a snapback photo of herself. She captioned the photo, ” uMama kabani lona? #SnapBack” which translates to ‘Whose mother is this?” along with a tongue out emoji.

Her son’s name, “Netha Makhosini Jones”, serves as an ode Khosini, who would have been a proud uncle to his nephew. Minnie’s little brother, Khosini Dlamini sadly lost his life September 2019 after spending weeks in ICU.

Mrs. Jones left people spellbound when she posted her recent picture on IG where she is wearing a short blue and mustard dress, paired with gorgeous stilettos. Her hair and makeup is also on point completing the look.

Many of her industry mates could not find the perfect words to express the thoughts going on in her head, but others were left surprised at her body transformation.

Minnie Dlamini

Minnie had once tweeted after the birth of her baby, her fortune has definitely increased. After the birth to Netha Makhosini Jones Minnie explains that she has been granted more opportunities, and has credited her son to be her lucky charm.

The new mom claimed that 2021 is definitely looking prosperous, as new career ventures have become available to her. She also committed to hustling harder as a working mother, in order to make sure that her baby has the life he deserves.

She stated, “I swear my child arrived with blessings from the other side. Kunetha izinhlanhla ngempela (It definitely is raining blessings). So excited about what the new year brings, it means I have to work twice as hard but I’m ready to show my son what I’m made of and make him proud!!!! What’s your motivation?”.

The media personality is loving every moment of motherhood but admitted that it is a hard job and is not for the faint-hearted. She acknowledged that she had Netha’s grandmothers to help her out in the first few days, but gave major credit to her hubby Quinton.

She stated, “Mad respect to all parents doing their best at raising their kids. This experience is no joke!!! So blessed to have such amazing support, my moms and most especially my amazing husband (I could cry at how great he is with the kid) Nothing great ever comes easy.”

Peter Moyo: Its hard to please everyone

Peter Moyo: Its hard to please everyone. The 31-year-old, who assumed leadership of Ukataka Express in 2011 after the death of Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo, said circumstances forced him to become a family head when he was still experimenting with life.

Peter Moyo reckons it’s hard to please people after he became a bread-winner at 22 with all the eyes on him. The outspoken former footie ace opened up in his new single titled Chinokangana Idemo in which he conceded he was taking a swipe at ungrateful people.

The Young Igwe, as Peter Moyo is fondly known, could not be drawn into revealing names of people he targeted in the song. “My new song Chinokanganwa Idemo was released last Friday and I have been playing it during live shows before lockdown,” said the Utakataka Express boss.

He was quick to deny speculation that it might be a direct attack at some of his siblings or inner-circle backbiting him. “To be honest the song is not directed at anyone closer to me but it’s just social commentary which can suit every family set up.

“Such cases of ungrateful people are there and it’s high time people should live their lives and mind their own businesses,” he said. When further quizzed if he was not taking a swipe at his siblings or relatives, Peter Moyo continued:

“Like I said I wasn’t targeting anyone in my family but such cases do happen in every set up. “In my case, I might have experienced it’s indirectly since I became breadwinner at 22 and I was just beginning to experiment with life.

“I missed a number of opportunities in life but I don’t regret some of the moments because they have made me a strong man that I am today. “I don’t have time to fight people but as a musician I need to educate fans and people that we need to appreciate each other.”

On his festive plans and new stuff on the market before the festive season, he added: “I can’t promise a lot for the festive season but I can assure fans that the single I release last Friday is one of the projects I have been working on. “If I were to release new music, I now prefer doing more singles than albums because of the production costs.

“As an artiste, I would prefer doing single which are not costly as compared to albums where pirates have always become the biggest winners from the fruits of our sweat.”  Peter Moyo said called for unity among artistes and families adding that hatred and bad-mouthing each other had no police his new vocabulary.

In the recent months, his younger brother Obert Tongai Moyo Junior has been trading lyrical shots with Peter Moyo as he likened him to the biblical Cain. As a big brother, Peter Moyo has vowed not to hit back at his younger brother saying he had better things in life to attend to.

And his new single might be a lesson to same people in his situation who don’t credit for the good things they do in life. Many a critique reckons in life the ungrateful ones will never appreciate the good that they get from others but specialises on the negatives.

Police and Minister Kazembe ordered to pay $4.3 Million for the death of Kelvin Tinashe Choto. Choto, a young football player, was shot dead by a police officer near Makoni Shopping Centre in Chitungwiza in January 2019 during anti-government protests.

High Court judge Justice Edith Mushore has ordered Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga, Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe and Constable Rachid Siri to pay ZWL$4.3 million to the Choto family for the unlawful shooting of Kelvin Tinashe Choto in January 2019.

On Wednesday, 25 November 2020, Justice Mushore ruled that the Choto family is entitled to damages amounting to ZWL$4,3 million emanating from the shooting of the footballer. The Choto family was represented by Fiona Iliff of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).

In a post on their social media pages, the ZLHR said out of the ZWL$4.3 million, ZWL$2 million is compensation for loss of support for Kelvin’s minor child Anenyasha Janelle Choto while ZWL$2 million is for loss of support for the widow Varaidzo Chiyanike.

The other ZWL$168 000 is for nervous shock and trauma for Chiyanike while ZWL$168 000 is for nervous shock and trauma for Julius Choto, who is Kelvin’s father.

Update: Zim Army plane crashes in Somabula and kills two pilots. The plane developed a technical fault and crashed at around 2.30 pm at Dabuka in Somabula on the outskirts of Gweru, Midlands Province. The two pilots, named as flight instructor Mkhululi Dube and his female trainee, Silungile Sweswe, died on impact.

An Air Force of Zimbabwe training plane crashed and killed an instructor and a female student pilot on Tuesday. According to eyewitness accounts, the plane had taken off from the Thornhill Air Base, now renamed Josiah Tungamirai Air Force Base and crashed while attempting to turn back.

A witness who requested not to be named was quoted by the Chronicle as having said:  This is usually the training ground for pilots and we usually gather to view their flying prowess. We were surprised when the plane started jerking.

In the twinkle of an eye the plane had crashed and there was a cloud of dust. We rushed to the scene but we could not help. A team from the Air Force of Zimbabwe arrived at the crash scene about 20 minutes after the plane had come down and dispersed villagers who had just gathered before retrieving the bodies.

ZimLive reports that two journalists from The Chronicle and the Masvingo Mirror were detained for four hours after taking pictures of the plane wreckage. The scribes were let go without charge after being forced to delete their pictures.

Drama as DJ Rimo is reportedly feasting on Ginimbi’s debts

Drama as DJ Rimo is reportedly feasting on Ginimbi’s debts. Marimo is allegedly taking advantage of the fact that most of Ginimbi’s transactions were not documented and had no paper trail.

Tinotenda “Rimo” Marimo, popularly known as Rimo Jackson, a close friend of Genius “Ginimbi” Kadungure, is reportedly “cannibalising” his estate by chasing debts owed to the late socialite without the knowledge and consent of the Kadungure family. A source is quoted as having said:

Rimo was always with Ginimbi so he was privy to most transactions and knows who owes what and how much. So he is chasing those debts and pocketing. Standard procedure is he should surrender to the family or executor.

Marimo reportedly visited a Sports Club in Mt Pleasant and collected US$600 that Ginimbi had paid as a deposit to rent and run an eatery located at the club. A patron told Zim Morning Post:

Rimo came through when we were having lunch. He was in a no-nonsense mood and he had a quick chat with the manager and left. We then asked the manager why Rimo was in such a rush and that’s when we learnt he had come for Genius’ money.

When contacted for comment by the publication, the celebrity disc jockey could neither confirm nor deny the claims that he took the money from the Sports Club.

Meanwhile, the Master’s Office at the High Court last week called for a meeting of the Kadungure family members and other potential beneficiaries for this Wednesday to sort out the way forward and deal with administrative details such as the appointment of the executor of Ginimbi estate.

Argentina legend Diego Maradona has died

Argentina legend Diego Maradona has died. The former Argentina attacking midfielder and manager suffered a heart attack at his Buenos Aires home. He had successful surgery on a brain blood clot earlier in November and was to be treated for alcohol dependency.

Football legend Diego Maradona, one of the greatest players of all time, has died at the age of 60.

Maradona was captain when Argentina won the 1986 World Cup, scoring the famous ‘Hand of God’ goal against England in the quarter-finals. Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi paid tribute to Maradona, saying he was “eternal”.

“A very sad day for all Argentines and football,” said Messi. “He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal. “I keep all the beautiful moments lived with him and I send my condolences to all his family and friends.”

In a statement on social media, the Argentine Football Association expressed “its deepest sorrow for the death of our legend”, adding: “You will always be in our hearts.”

Declaring three days of national mourning, Alberto Fernandez, the president of Argentina, said: “You took us to the top of the world. You made us immensely happy. You were the greatest of them all. “Thank you for having existed, Diego. We’re going to miss you all our lives.”

Maradona played for Barcelona and Napoli during his club career, winning two Serie A titles with the Italian side. He started his career with Argentinos Juniors, also playing for Sevilla, and Boca Juniors and Newell’s Old Boys in his homeland.

He scored 34 goals in 91 appearances for Argentina, representing them in four World Cups. Maradona led his country to the 1990 final in Italy, where they were beaten by West Germany, before captaining them again in the United States in 1994, but was sent home after failing a drugs test for ephedrine.

During the second half of his career, Maradona struggled with cocaine addiction and was banned for 15 months after testing positive for the drug in 1991. He retired from professional football in 1997, on his 37th birthday, during his second stint at Argentine giants Boca Juniors.

Having briefly managed two sides in Argentina during his playing career, Maradona was appointed head coach of the national team in 2008 and left after the 2010 World Cup, where his side were beaten by Germany in the quarter-finals.Messi and Maradona

He subsequently managed teams in the United Arab Emirates and Mexico and was in charge of Gimnasia y Esgrima in Argentina’s top flight at the time of his death.

World pays tribute
Brazil legend Pele led tributes to Maradona, writing on Twitter: “What sad news. I lost a great friend and the world lost a legend. There is still much to be said, but for now, may God give strength to family members. One day, I hope we can play ball together in the sky.”

Former England striker and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, who was part of the England team beaten by Argentina at the 1986 World Cup, said Maradona was “by some distance, the best player of my generation and arguably the greatest of all time”.

Ex-Tottenham and Argentina midfielder Ossie Ardiles said: “Thank dear Dieguito for your friendship, for your football, sublime, without comparison. Simply, the best football player in the history of football. So many enjoyable moments together. Impossible to say which one was the best. RIP my dear friend.”

Juventus and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo said: “Today I bid farewell to a friend and the world bids farewell to an eternal genius. One of the best of all time. An unparalleled magician. He leaves too soon, but leaves a legacy without limits and a void that will never be filled. Rest in peace, ace. You will never be forgotten.”

Boca Juniors, where Maradona enjoyed two spells and finished his career, gave “eternal thanks” to their former player.

CID Law and Order fails’ to charge Hopewell Chin’ono

CID Law and Order fails’ to charge Hopewell Chin’ono. Chin’ono was arrested on 3 November on charges of defeating or obstructing the course of justice. He was out on bail on charges of incitement to public violence going back to July.

University of Kent law lecturer, Alex Magaisa says the statement by Superintendent Muchada in the case against Hopewell Chin’ono shows that the prominent journalist is not being prosecuted but persecuted.

In his analysis of the papers given to Chin’ono’s lawyers today by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Magaisa wrote on Twitter:

This statement by Superintendent Muchada in the case against Hopewell Chin’ono is terribly weak. He couldn’t even get the dates right. In paragraph 1 he recalls events on 16 July 2020 but in paragraph 6 he refers to 16 October 2020 as the same date. Such elementary errors.

In paragraph 6, he says he came to the conclusion that the accused had committed “an offence”. But he does not state the nature of the offence. There’s not even a reference to the statute. He talks about policy issues like re-engagement which are superfluous and irrelevant.

In paragraph 7, he says the accused said “Zimbabwe will never be free … through elections” & interprets that to mean he “opted to incite the populace to use “any means”. An opinion is not an offence. He doesn’t say what & how expressing an opinion is incitement.

In paragraph 8 he says “a lot” of people who read the tweets “started” mobilising. What is “a lot”? How does he know they “read” the tweets?

How does he establish a causal connection between the tweets, their being read & the so-called mobilisation that he says “started”?

The Superintendent also draws a false cause between Hopewell’s tweets and the actions of Jacob Ngarivhume and Job Sikhala.

It’s as if they were driven by Hopewell’s tweets to “start” mobilising for July 31 when in fact they made their calls much earlier. Man is not credible.

If the prosecution’s papers do not disclose an offence, the accused cannot be expected to defend himself. What will he be defending if the prosecution’s papers do not disclose an offence?

It’s just political persecution presented as prosecution.

Harare Mayor his Worship Jacob Mafume arrested

Harare Mayor his Worship Jacob Mafume arrested. The MDC councillor had earlier told HStv that he was tipped last week of his impending arrest over allegations of illegal land sales. Harare mayor Jacob Mafume was on Wednesday, 25 November 2020 arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

However, the charges preferred against Mafume have not yet been disclosed. In a statement, the MDC Alliance said: In yet another case of persecution and weaponization of the law against MDC Alliance members, Harare Mayor [Jacob Mafume] has been arrested by [ZRP]. The charges against him are unclear.

We know that his real offence was winning the mayoral vote for the MDC Alliance. The toxic politics of Zanu PF is aimed at persecuting those who openly display allegiance with President [Nelson Chamisa].

They want to remove him and replace him with a Zanu PF proxy. In October this year, plainclothes police officers swooped on Harare Town House and rounded up 21 councillors and three journalists attending a full council meeting.

The officials and journalist were later released on the same day without being charged.

Chinhoyi High School shutdown as COVID-19 cases spike. Though the school has been closed to outside learners, examination candidates will be allowed to enter the school’s premises. The government has with immediate effect closed Chinhoyi High School to non-examination day scholars after coronavirus cases have spiked at the school.

Mashonaland West acting provincial medical director Gift Masoja confirmed the latest development, saying more nurses and environmental health officials will be stationed at the school to deal with the crisis. He said:

We resolved to cut the school from day scholars although examination candidates will be allowed. This however means, we will have to intensify our response. More nurses and environmental health officials will be stationed at the school to effect response and monitoring.

This comes after more than 57 out of the 74 students tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus. The cases came after a 17-year-old female student had earlier tested positive for the virus.

The 17-year-old pupil was taken to Mzari Clinic for isolation where seven Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) students are isolated while the 57 pupils who are asymptotic are under quarantine at the school.
