Manchester City beat Olympiakos to progress to the Champions League knockout stage

Manchester City beat Olympiakos to progress to the Champions League knockout stage. Pep Guardiola’s side required one point to reach the last-16, but victory on Wednesday ensures they remain firm favourites to finish top of Group C. Manchester City secured progress to the Champions League knockout stages with two games to spare after a comfortable victory over Olympiakos in Piraeus.

City dominated throughout against the Greek champions but 20-year-old England international Phil Foden scored the only goal after 36 minutes when he slotted in from Raheem Sterling’s delightful back-pass.

Olympiakos failed to register a shot, or indeed even a touch in City’s box, until the 88th-minute, but Ilkay Gundogan blazed wide and Bernardo Silva was denied at close range as City failed to add to their tally, despite 22 attempts at goal. Midfielder Kevin de Bruyne was left out of the squad but City welcomed back club record goalscorer Sergio Aguero from injury for the final 13 minutes as they began a spell of 11 games before the end of 2020.

There was a moment of silence prior to kick-off, following news of the death of football legend Diego Maradona at the age of 60.

Foden the difference in one-sided game
City could not have wished for an easier start to their busy end-of-year schedule, but Sterling’s assist for Foden was a rare moment of quality when it mattered in attack.

Foden’s subsequent well-taken finish was his seventh goal involvement in his past 10 appearances in Europe’s elite competition – and he has now been involved in 25 goals in 40 starts for City in all competitions.

Indeed, his 10 goals in all competitions for City in 2020 is – excluding penalties – the most by any Premier League midfielder this calendar year.

Olympiakos offered almost nothing in attack themselves with their two shots arriving in the closing minutes as City’s profligacy offered their opponents hope of an unlikely point.

Four wins from as many group matches, and their 10 goals – as many as they have managed in eight Premier League games – undoubtedly represents a satisfying European campaign to date – one which manager Guardiola said he is “fully optimistic” about.

But, three months on from their painful shock defeat by Lyon at last season’s quarter-final stage, Guardiola can only expect similar wastefulness to be punished deeper into the competition.

City desperate for Aguero return
After slumping to a 2-0 defeat against Tottenham on Saturday, Guardiola said City could not expect Argentine striker Aguero to solve all the problems his side face.

City, 13th in the Premier League and eight points behind leaders Spurs, albeit with a game in hand, have made their worst start since 2008. Typically ruthless under Guardiola, they have not scored more than once in a Premier League game since a 5-2 defeat by Leicester in September.

Despite victory over Olympiakos, this was the latest reminder of how crucial Aguero is to his side.

The 32-year-old returned to the bench at the weekend after a four-game absence, having suffered a hamstring strain against West Ham on 24 October in only his third game since a four-month lay-off due to a knee problem.

Though it has been a different story for City in Europe so far, Aguero’s ability to remain injury-free will be crucial for the battles ahead – beginning with Burnley on Saturday as they look to make up ground in the Premier League.

What’s next?
Manchester City host Burnley on at 15:00 GMT on Saturday, before travelling to Porto in their penultimate Champions League group game next Tuesday (20:00).

Liverpool beaten 2 – 0 by Atlanta at home

Liverpool beaten 2 – 0 by Atlanta at home. A much-changed Reds side lacked fluidity and failed to have a shot on target at Anfield on Wednesday. Atalanta scored twice in four minutes to deliver a surprise victory over Liverpool and blow qualification from Champions League Group D wide open.

Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens struck for the Serie A side midway through the second half.  Mohamed Salah, returning to the side, had fired over with the Reds’ best chance in the first half.

The Italian outfit looked more likely to break the deadlock and did so when Ilicic poked beyond Alisson from Alejandro Gomez’s teasing cross. The visitors doubled their lead four minutes later when an unmarked Gosens volleyed in from Hans Hateboer’s nod down.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp immediately made four substitutions in a bid to get something from the game, but the changes could not prevent the Reds suffering their first home defeat inside 90 minutes since September 2018.

Klopp’s side still remain top of the group and need one win from their final two games – at home to Ajax and Midtjylland – to qualify. Lacklustre Reds suffer Anfield off night
Klopp will surely be disappointed not to have wrapped up his side’s qualification for the knockout stages and given himself the opportunity to rest players.

The German has already bemoaned the fact his team have to visit Brighton at 12:30 GMT on Saturday, urging broadcasters to discuss the schedule or risk clubs losing players to injury.

It is also no secret the Reds are already without a number of first-team regulars, and with Curtis Jones, Rhys Williams and Neco Williams in their line-up, Liverpool became the first side to start three British teenagers in a Champions League match for more than a decade.

Klopp made five changes to the side that beat Leicester City on Sunday, including Salah, who returned after his positive Covid-19 test while on international duty with Egypt.

On an off night for the Reds, Salah, who earlier in the day was named on the shortlist for the men’s prize in the Best Fifa Football Awards, engineered the hosts’ only real chance when he shot over in the 44th minute.

Liverpool lacked their usual intensity and even the arrival of Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota, Andrew Robertson and Fabinho after 61 minutes failed to inspire any urgency. Instead, they were deservedly beaten by an Atalanta side they had inflicted a 5-0 defeat upon earlier this month.

Air Force of Zimbabwe mourns crash victims. The two were on routine training from Josiah Tungamirai Airbase, Commander Air Force of Zimbabwe Air Marshal Elson Moyo said in a statement yesterday conveying his condolences to the families of two pilots.

An Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) aircraft, SF 260 Genet trainer, crashed near Dabuka Railway Siding in Gweru around 2pm on Tuesday killing instructor Squadron Leader Mkhululi Dube (37) and trainee pilot Officer Cadet Silungile Sweswe (25).

“It was with a heavy heart and a deep sense of sorrow that I learnt of the aircraft accident that claimed the lives of our pilots. On behalf of the Air Force of Zimbabwe, officers and members, and indeed on my behalf, I would like to express our deepest condolences to the families of Squadron Leader Dube and Officer Cadet Sweswe,” said Air Mashal Moyo yesterday.Silungile Sweswe

He said the Air Force of Zimbabwe was robbed of a proficient pilot in Squadron Leader Dube and a dedicated trainee pilot.

“While the Air Force of Zimbabwe was mourning, it is also a moment to reflect and recognise the sacrifices and dedication of the deceased pilots. The AFZ will forever cherish their commitment to excellence in training and unwavering dedication to duty,” said Air Mashal Moyo.

AFZ is investigating the accident

“This is usually the training ground for trainee pilots and we usually gather to view their flying prowess. We were surprised when the plane started making some jerks when it was turning, and then it crashed and there was a cloud of dust. We then rushed to the scene, but we could not help,” said a witness who requested not to be named.

A team arrived at the scene about 20 minutes after the crash to investigate. Outside being a flying instructor, Squadron Leader Dube was the secretary-general of Chapungu FC.

“He joined the club as the deputy secretary-general in 2018 before he was elevated to the post of secretary-general in 2015. His experience and commitment to football administration will be solely missed by the club and the football fraternity at large,” said the statement.

Mbare Bus terminus tender scandal rocks Harare City Council

Mbare Bus terminus tender scandal rocks Harare City Council. The tender has already been condemned by Harare Provincial Development Coordinator (PDC) Mr Tafadzwa Muguti and Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume, suggesting it is some sort of backdoor deal.

Harare City Council has awarded a tender for palisade fencing and refurbishment of Mbare Bus Terminus to a local company when the same work had already been done for free by transport operators recently and the terminus was ready to open.

The council tender delayed the reopening of the bus terminus despite completion of the work to the standards agreed between the council and the donors and it is assumed the delay was meant to allow the company in question to do some work and justify the tender awarded to it.

Mr Muguti yesterday rubbished the latest deal and ordered the immediate re-opening of the bus terminus while he examines the contracts to see how such a tender could be awarded and by whom. And Mayor Mafume yesterday said that any such tender was illegal.

“That will be an unprocedural tender and we as council, are not privy to it. What I know is we have an agreement with the transport operators for the Mbare terminus works and anything outside that is illegal,” he said before he was arrested on corruption charges.

It is understood that the tender was awarded to a company owned by a person only identified as Zhakata, who has no track record of reputable construction works and is suspected of being the same person awarded a 23-year lease for personal use of Harava Dam at the expense of the residents.

The Zimbabwe Passenger Transport Organisation (ZPTO) in the middle of this year offered to assist the city council through fencing and refurbishing the biggest bus terminus in the country, a donation worth more than US$85 000, so they could resume services as the lockdown eased in a safe and secure environment.

True to the organisation’s word, palisade fence was erected at the terminus and two boreholes were drilled to ensure there is running water to wash hands in line with public health requirements.

A storeroom for chemicals and sanitisers was built and facilities for sanitisation of people and fumigation of buses were put in place in line with Government’s fight against Covid-19. However, The Herald has learnt that a local company was in October awarded a tender to do the same work for a yet to be disclosed figure.

Mr Muguti said there was absolutely no grounds for a tender for the same work already done by the transport operators. “The bus operators are assisting in upgrading Mbare bus terminus in line with a donation made in July this year.

“Fencing was done and a great deal of work was also done. Recently I toured the rank together with the minister and I was directed to re-open the terminus upon satisfaction that the work had been done.

“However, in October council issued a tender for palisade fence and refurbishment of shades when the work had already been done. Surprisingly, we hear that council’s department that received the donation, was the one that awarded the tender to the company,” he said.

He added: “I have since requested copies of the tender documents from the relevant council department.”

ZPTO chairman Mr Samson Nanhanga demanded the re-opening of the terminus saying the upgrade had been done to the set standards. “We worked with council specifications in upgrading the bus terminus but we failed to understand why council was not re-opening the terminus.

“Everything is now in place and we demand the re-opening of the market with immediate effect,” he said. According to Mr Muguti, the terminus must re-open as soon as possible on condition that all the Covid-19 specifications are observed.

There must be social distancing and buses must be fumigated when entering the terminus, he said adding that sanitisation must be done and all the vagrants who were living in the shades must be evicted.

Touts and space barons, Mr Muguti said, have no place at the newly refurbished bus terminus. Mr Muguti, Cllr Jacob Mafume, council officials and bus operators toured the terminus to assess the infrastructural development and even saw a demonstration of how buses will be fumigated and how passengers will be sanitised when boarding buses.

Touring the renovation works being done by ZPTO, Mr Muguti said there should be massive control and a limited access of people getting into the terminus. He applauded ZPTO for doing a marvellous job in renovating Mbare Musika and urged them to work closely with council and the police to make sure that the place is well secured and maintained.

59 000 arrested for not wearing masks

59 000 arrested for not wearing masks. Those arrested over masks were released after paying deposit fines, although there was an option of taking them to court, where they could have been jailed or fined far higher sums.

Nearly 59 000 people have been arrested countrywide since March for not wearing face masks in public as required by public health regulations and police are now intensifying patrols, surveillance, checks and other measures and will arrest anyone found disregarding public health regulations and the eased lockdown regulations.

Since March, Zimbabwe has recorded 9 398 Covid-19 positive cases, but 8 297 recovered while 274 died. National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi reiterated that lockdown measures were still in force, including a curfew between 10pm and 6am.

“The enforcement of these health, safety and security measures is still paramount. Police have noted that some members of the public are no longer wearing face masks, observing social distancing guidelines and sanitising.

“Covid-19 is real and the public should avoid being complacent and should cooperate with law enforcement agencies to curb the spread of the pandemic. So far we have arrested a total of 58 981 people for not wearing face masks and we will continue arresting them so that the law will take its course since these people are posing a risk to others and the society.”

Asst Comm Nyathi urged members of the public to cooperate with police to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Recently, over 1 400 bar and nightclub owners around Harare were arrested on allegations of disregarding national lockdown regulations, with police deploying more officers to ensure compliance with health protocols. Bars and nightclubs remain closed under lockdown rules.

Police said there were increased cases of people violating curfew regulations and widespread public drinking at shopping centres, especially in high-density suburbs.

There was also need to stick to regulations on public gatherings which are restricted to a maximum of 100 people or less at church gatherings, 50 people or less at funerals, low-risk sports and sports clubs.

Weddings, birthday and house parties, political and other social gatherings including musical concerts, remain banned.

Sports Commission bars Young Warriors from participating at the Under-20 COSAFA tournament

Sports Commission bars Young Warriors from participating at the Under-20 COSAFA tournament. The country is still trying to come to terms with the disqualification of the Under-17 national team, from the COSAFA Championships, last week, after an age-cheating saga.

The Sports Commission dropped a bombshell yesterday when they barred the Young Warriors from travelling to South Africa for the Under-20 COSAFA tournament. Zimbabwe could be handed a US$150 000 fine and suspension from the next two editions of the Under-20 COSAFA tournament if the Young Warriors pull out after having committed themselves to the tourney.

The annual fiesta is scheduled to run between December 3-13 at the Nelson Mandela Bay. But Zimbabwe, who are in Group A along with the hosts, Mozambique and Lesotho could be forced to withdraw if ZIFA’s desperate plea to Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister, Kirsty Coventry, fails to break the impasse.

ZIFA wrote two letters to the SRC seeking clearance for the team’s participation at the regional event, which will also act as the zonal qualifier for the 2021 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

On October 9, ZIFA wrote to the SRC seeking a blanket clearance for all the national teams with imminent international assignments, including the Under-20 men’s team, the Warriors as well as the Mighty Warriors and Young Mighty Warriors.

But, the follow-up letter they wrote seeking clearance for the Under-20 side was thrown out by the SRC on grounds that the association had failed to abide by the set regulations for sports tours outside the country in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Please be advised that this tour is NOT APPROVED for failure to abide by the set regulations for sport tours outside the country. “As previously advised, all approvals for foreign tours in this Covid-19 pandemic era require approvals from the Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation and the Minister of Health and Child Care.

“Please, further note that all unapproved tours must not be undertaken and any failure to abide by the same will result in the commission invoking the necessary disciplinary measures in terms of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act.”

Some of the regulations include the submission of the travelling party 21 days before the competition or the first day of the tournament. But in their letter, ZIFA had argued it was virtually impossible to do so due to logistics involved, including the need to sort out travel documents, especially given this is an age-group team involved.

“As a follow-up to our clearance request, sent to your office on 9 October 2020 regarding our participation in an Under-20 boys tournament organised by COSAFA, we hereby submit the intricate details of the provisional delegation set to travel to South Africa on 30 November 2020,’’ ZIFA wrote in their letter.

“We are cognisant of your request for us to send complete delegations earlier than we do, but we would like to draw your attention to the reason why it was impossible for us to do so.

“We cannot ascertain the actual delegation until a provisional list of players has been called up, and this normally happens only 14 days before the match date, or the first match of any tournament.

“For that reason, we can only submit a full delegation list for clearance, when everyone involved has confirmed their commitment. “Also, we have instances where players called up have to apply for travel documents while in camp, and their details will be incomplete for clearance requests.”

The Under-20 squad are in camp and coach Tonderai Ndiraya and his men will be hoping there could be a break to the impasse. Article 18:8 of the 2020 COSAFA Under-20 boys zonal tournament Rules and Regulations state that:

“Withdrawal from the tournament by a participating association, notified less than twenty days before the start of the tournament or during it will entail, in addition to the loss of the entry fee, a fine of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars (US$150 000) as well as the suspension of the relevant National Association for next two editions of the tournament, except in cases of force majeure as determined by the organising committee.”

ZIFA spokesperson Xolisani Gwesela last night confirmed the association had received the SRC correspondence and sent their appeal to Coventry. “We confirm that we have received correspondence from SRC not approving the Under-20 team to travel to South Africa.

“We are disappointed by the decision and we have since appealed to the Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation, Kirsty Coventry,” he said.

Report: Ginimbi’s family accept his unsigned Will. Ginimbi’s father, Mr. Anderson Kadungure, is entitled to 10% of funds generated in the trust while Ginimbi’s sisters Nelia and Juliet will get 60% and 30% respectively.

The family of the late businessman cum socialite Genius Ginimbi Kadungure and other possible beneficiaries to the estate that was left by the socialite have reportedly unanimously accepted the unsigned will that was registered at the Master of the High Court last week, The Herald reports.

According to the publication, the unsigned will reportedly stated that:

  • His friend known as “Kit Kat” gets his Lamborghini
  • All other assets including the Domboshawa mansion, cars, and companies be placed under the Genius Kadungure Trust.
  • The mansion be converted into a hotel that operates under the said trust.

Ms Darangwa was appointed the executor to the estate and Ranros Estate Administrators are the custodians of the unsigned will.

Ranros Estate Administrators reportedly wrote a letter asking for the unsigned will to be accepted as the last will of Ginimbi as a matter of urgency in order to ensure that his companies in Botswana resume trading in accordance with Botswana laws which states that an estate has to be registered for operations to resume.

Ginimbi reportedly died before signing his will and his lawyers confirmed he had no will.

No amount will replace my husband says Varaidzo wife of murder footballer Tinashe: Video. High Court judge Justice Edith Mushore has ordered Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga, Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe and Constable Rachid Siri to pay ZWL$4.3 million to the Choto family for the unlawful shooting of Kelvin Tinashe Choto in January 2019.

“No amount will replace my husband” Varaidzo Chinyike, wife to the late Tinashe Choto.
Choto, a young football player, was shot dead by a police officer near Makoni Shopping Centre in Chitungwiza in January 2019 during anti-government protests.

On Wednesday, 25 November 2020, Justice Mushore ruled that the Choto family is entitled to damages amounting to ZWL$4,3 million emanating from the shooting of the footballer. The Choto family was represented by Fiona Iliff of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).

In a post on their social media pages, the ZLHR said out of the ZWL$4.3 million, ZWL$2 million is compensation for loss of support for Kelvin’s minor child Anenyasha Janelle Choto while ZWL$2 million is for loss of support for the widow Varaidzo Chiyanike.

The other ZWL$168 000 is for nervous shock and trauma for Chiyanike while ZWL$168 000 is for nervous shock and trauma for Julius Choto, who is Kelvin’s father.

Govt orders the closing off Bars, Nightclubs and Betting shops. Speaking during a post-Cabinet briefing on Tuesday, Environment, Climate Change, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Mangaliso Nqobizitha Ndlovu vowed that the enforcement of lockdown measures will be heightened henceforth.

The government said bars, nightclubs, beerhalls and some other public places have not yet been given the green light to reopen. He said:

It should be noted that public bars, nightclubs, beerhalls, casinos, betting shops and theatres are still not permitted to operate. The nation is informed that gatherings are still regulated, while authorised events such as weddings and church congregations are limited to 50 and 100 persons, respectively.

It should be emphasised that where there is non-compliance to these regulations the law enforcement agencies will not hesitate to enforce the penalties prescribed.

Ndlovu urged members of the public to take all the necessary precautions to prevent a surge in COVID-19 positive cases in light of the approaching Christmas and New Year holidays.

Zimbabwe has experienced an upsurge in coronavirus cases with 90 new cases and one death reported on Tuesday.

Govt blasted for abandoning trapped illegal miners

Govt blasted for abandoning trapped illegal miners. Today marks day 17 after the miners got trapped and the government has given up on efforts to retrieve them citing flooding.
Government has been rapped for its failure to retrieve six bodies of miners trapped in a shaft at Matshetshe Mine in Esigodini since November 10.

Last week the government declared that it was not possible to retrieve the bodies of the trapped miners because further attempts could result in more deaths.

The trapped mineworkers were identified as Nkosilathi Ndlovu (29), Blessed Ncube (24), Christopher Dube (23) and Ndumiso Dube who are all from the same family, Ndumiso Ntini from Lupane and one only identified as Mlilo from Gwanda.

A human rights activist, Effie Ncube yesterday said the failure by government to rescue them exposed its inability to protect citizens from disasters. “The failure to rescue miners at Esigodini mine shows that government is completely unable to protect citizens from hazards such as earthquakes, floods and other things,” Ncube said.

“We have a government that cannot protect people from hunger, from poverty and from diseases. “It is a government that is able to oppress but not to liberate, to injure but not to treat and to suppress people but not to prosper them.”

Mthwakazi Democratic Alliance (MDA) national spokesperson Mandlenkosi Nkomo said his party was concerned with the attitude of the government towards the trapped miners.

“We understand that the government has aborted the rescue mission which was highly irresponsible. It is our united view that, this matter must be declared a national disaster,” Nkomo said.

“We urge the government to urgently reconsider rescue efforts, as the process may in some instances save lives or bring closure to the affected families in the worst circumstances.”

He said the government was responsible for the poverty that prompted the miners to go underground in search of gold. “These miners were trapped in search of money to sustain their lives and those of their families.

“A lot of families in Mthwakazi end up resorting to risky mining due to lack of employment opportunities and a conducive environment to start their own businesses,” Nkomo said.

He said his party would assist the affected families. Families of the trapped miners have since given up hope of seeing their relatives’ bodies after government retreated from search operations.

One of the trapped miners’ relatives, Edith Tshabalala said government officials last week met the families of the trapped miners and Esigodini community where they declared they were no longer able to help after an engineer said the mine was flooded.

The mine is owned by Sakhile Ndlovu, who reportedly evacuated her equipment after the shaft collapsed and is now said to have disowned the miners saying they were not her employees.

Chinotimba and Temba Mliswa clash in parliament over Mamombe’s mental case: Video. Buhera South legislator Joseph Chinotimba yesterday caused a storm in Parliament after he described Harare West Legislator Joanah Mamombe as mentally ill.

Chinotimba made the remarks after Mamombe, during the question-and-answer session, asked the House what government was doing to stop gender-based violence against woman and girls between the age of 15 and 39.

“Statistics in Zimbabwe show that women between 15 and 39 experience gender-based violence and it undermines the opportunities of women and denies the stability of women. So what should be done to avoid that?” asked Mamombe.

But before leader of government business in Parliament, Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi responded, Chinotimba shouted: “Mamombe is mentally disturbed.” This did not go down well with other legislators, who accused Chinotimba of abusing Mamombe.

MPs demanded that the Buhera South MP withdraws his statement because he was not qualified to certify Mamombe’s mental status. Chinotimba finally withdrew his statement after being ordered by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Tsitsi Gezi.

Sindi Dlathu has a career that has been thriving for over 20 years. The beauty was on Muvhango since 1997 and since leaving the soapie, she has managed to show off her acting chops on The River.

A few years ago a picture surfaced of Sindi Dlathu and her sister Zandile and we had to do a double-take because of how identical they look. As if that was not enough they have welcomed their younger sister Tina into the fray and they legitimately look like triplets.

Other than the pictures of her sisters on Instagram, Sindi is very private. We do know that she is currently married to Okielant Nkosi, they have two children, however, she keeps a tight cover on her family and private family. Till this day, her children and husband have never been written about in the media.

Although there isn’t much information available about Sindi’s family, Sindi, however, is one Mzansi’s celebs who has a twin. Her twin sister is called Zanele Sangweni. The sister is married to Matome Meela, a local businessman who owns a pawn shop and sells used cars in Soweto.

When she is not hanging out with her sisters she is giving us chills as she delivers a world-class performance on The River. Can you believe Phathu Makwarela who is the writer of 1Magic’s hit telenovela had been eyeing Sindi Dlathu and Hlomla Dandala’s since she was playing Thandaza in Muvhango? He envisioned what it would be like if Thandaza were to cheat on Ranthumeng with Hlomla as he was the ideal man for her.

Sharing a tweet from way back in 2012, he was evidently astonished at how he made that possible and how it is working out now.

The actress also has much to celebrate after her win at the virtually held South African Film & Television Award (Safta), where she walked away with Best Actress – Telenovela award for her role as Lindiwe in The River.

Renowned actor John Kani following Sindi’s win at the Saftas took to Twitter to share just how proud he was of the actress.

“I am so proud of you. From Committed Artists at the Market Theatre to Broadway in New York with Sarafina and to Best Actress SAFTA,” wrote The Lion King actor.

We love to see fellow creatives supporting each other.

Harare flyover bridge reportedly shaking

Harare flyover bridge reportedly shaking. There were claims on social media yesterday that Mupedzanhamo flyover where Simon Mazorodze Road interchanges with Rotten Row, was shaking and vibrating. In a statement yesterday, council engineer Bernard Musarurwa said inspections on structures were not being done frequently because of lack of skill.

Harare City Council yesterday admitted it was not inspecting its infrastructure due to resource and skills constraints, a development that could prove disastrous following claims that a bridge on a busy Harare road has developed structural defects and could collapse anytime.

“It is a requirement that every structure, be it a building, a bridge, a dam, a powerline, any form of infrastructure, be inspected periodically for structural integrity, and fitness for purpose,” he said.

“Sadly, these inspections are not being conducted regularly, if at all, due to lack of resources, expertise, or in most cases, ignorance, or quite often, plain ‘ignoring.’

“So, it is more disconcerting where inspections have been conducted, and defects noted, and yet no remedial action is taken for over a decade; then it becomes a matter of waiting for a disaster to happen, which perhaps may be the only way to jolt the relevant authorities to take action.”

Musarurwa said the Mupedzanhamo flyover was last inspected in 2006 and serious structural defects were noted, but no action had been taken to date.

“Unfortunately, this is not the only case of ‘ignoring’ to take remedial action on defective structures, with several other bridges on the national highways having been inspected and reported upon that remedial action was required,” he said.

Musarurwa said he prayed that there would be no fatalities in the event of the inevitable collapse of one of the bridges or a building, an escalator/lift, or any other infrastructure which requires attention.

Council in 2006 invited a consulting engineering firm to conduct inspections and to report on the defects noted at the flyover, which noted defects.

“From the two inspections, the consultant was able to ascertain first-hand the extent of defects to be able to propose the requisite intervention strategies required for the repair of the structures, and to outline the scope of the work required to conduct a detailed assessment of the manifesting defects, and the structural analysis required to be able to make detailed recommendations for the appropriate remedial works.”

SA President Ramaphosa to face his first Vote No Of Confidence next week. According to eNCA, the motion was brought by the African Transformation Movement. The ATM says Ramaphosa failed to disclose to Parliament that he benefitted financially from his presidential campaign in 2017.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will next week face his first vote of no-confidence, eNCA reports. The motion was brought up by a movement called the African Transformation Movement (ATM) which said Ramaphosa failed to disclose that he benefited financially from his campaign 3 years ago.

National Assembly Speaker, Thandi Modise agreed to hold the debate on Thursday. The ATM submitted the motion in February, but all parliamentary matters have been delayed due to the lockdown.

The ATM is a minority party in the South African Parliament occupying only 2 seats. They have been calling for Ramaphosa to step down and even threatened to take legal action if the speaker of parliament failed to schedule a motion of no confidence against the South African President.

To get more details go to Twitter and check #CR17 to see what South Africans are saying on the matter.

Report: Some shop owners rejecting Ecocash and swipe cards

Report: Some shop owners rejecting Ecocash and swipe cards. According to the publication, the said retailers are saying their POS machines are not working whenever someone wants to purchase their products electronically.

Some retail shops and liquor shops in the metropolitan town of Bulawayo are reportedly rejecting mobile money and electronic payments for their services insisting that consumers pay them in bond notes or in forex only, New Zimbabwe reports.

Customers affected by this practice spoke to the publication and said: I am a civil servant and I am only paid through RTGS. Now, the major challenge is that shops and beer outlets especially those in the high-density suburbs where I stay are refusing to accept electronic cards and Eco-Cash.

Another consumer said some retailers are buying their stuff using local currency but reselling in USD: A bottle store in my area sells all its products in foreign currency yet the owner buys the products from local suppliers using the local currency. This is unfair, and this profiteering should be investigated by relevant authorities.

When contacted for comment, a local bottle store owner explained why the practice was taking place in the country’s second-largest city:

There are some products like green quarts which we buy from Delta strictly on a foreign currency basis. So you cannot expect me to sell that same product using Eco-Cash or Swipe. If I do that, I will not be able to re-stock

The government mid this year gave businesses the go-ahead to charge their goods and services in foreign currency when the Zimbabwe dollar’s value continued to deteriorate due to inflation.
